The All-American Rejects want their fans to bring their kids to the Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour , their first headlining tour in a decade, because the best way to avoid being swallowed up by nostalgia is to fully lean into it.
“We started with a swing swing, then we were your dirty little secret, and then you thought it would end tonight so we could move along, then we gave you too much hell for denying the fact that we’re the band you listened to your entire lives whether you liked it or not,” frontman Tyson Ritter said in a statement, running through some of the band’s biggest hits. “Bring your kids this time… so they can be just like their parents.”
The tour is scheduled to begin on Aug. 11 in Tampa and will wrap on Oct. 14 in Oklahoma City. The band will make stops in Raleigh, Philadelphia, Boston, Indianapolis, Nashville, Bakersfield, San Diego, Houston, and more cities. Tickets for the tour go on sale beginning Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. local time via the official All-American Rejects website .

Vocalist/bassist Tyson Ritter and guitarist Nick Wheeler were best friends in high school in Stillwater, Oklahoma, when they founded The All-American Rejects in 1999. And while their emo-pop band has traveled far and wide and sold millions of albums in the years since, their music retains an irrepressible energy and infectious scrappiness, two qualities that seem quintessentially teenaged in the best sense. They’ve also always understood the lasting value of big sticky melodies, a lesson they absorbed from a wide range of early influences that included Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, as well as emo forebears such as Weezer and Jimmy Eat World. Already fully realized on their 2002 indie hit “Swing, Swing,” The All-American Rejects’ catchy mix of arena rock, power pop, and emo soon landed them a deal with DreamWorks. Later hits like 2005’s “Dirty Little Secret” and 2008’s “Gives You Hell”—which hit No. 1 on the iTunes chart—confirmed the wide appeal of Ritter and Wheeler’s sometimes snarky and always punchy songwriting.

The All-American Rejects Announce First Headlining Tour in a Decade
The "Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour" marks the band's first headlining tour in a decade and features rotating support from The Get Up Kids, New Found Glory, and more
The All-American Rejects have unveiled a 2023 trek across the US starting this summer, aptly titled the “Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour.” The 27-date outing marks the band’s first solo headlining tour in a decade as well as their first extended road trip since their 2017 co-billed excursion with Dashboard Confessional.
Featuring support on select dates from fellow pop punk faithfuls The Get Up Kids , New Found Glory , Motion City Soundtrack , and The Starting Line , the “Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour” launches in Tampa on August 11th, then heads into early Fall with stops to Boston, Nashville, Los Angeles, and more. The jaunt concludes in Oklahoma City on October 14th.
Tickets are available via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.
“We’ve been trying to get out on the road in a proper way for the last few years,” the band shared in a statement. They credited their 2022 appearance at the Las Vegas pop punk summit When We Were Young with renewing interest in a full return to the stage, saying, “The world was ready to pull out of their ‘guilty pleasure chest’ and celebrate the soundtrack of their youth.” Acknowledging their supporting roster, who are all members of our list of the 100 Best Pop Punk Bands , AAR called it “a celebration of summers gone by.'”

Recently, New Found Glory released their new acoustic album, Make The Most Of It, via Revelation Records. The album features seven brand new tracks written in the wake of guitarist Chad Gilbert's rare cancer diagnosis, including previous singles "Dream Born Again" and "Get Me Home" alongside seven live acoustic versions of fan favorites.
Mixed by Mark Trombino (blink-182, Jimmy Eat World), Make The Most Of It is a rumination on what it means to grieve, to live, to approach every day with appreciation and a sense of fulfillment.
A percentage of proceeds from Make The Most Of It will go to The Pheo Para Alliance, the longest standing internationally recognized leader in advocacy for, and awareness of, pheochromocytoma.
As New Found Glory can attest, life moves quickly. Just three years after forming in Coral Springs, Florida, in 1997, the group were fast-tracked from local upstarts to mainstream stars on the back of ebullient pop melodies and hardcore-tinged breakdowns, setting off a blast of pop-punk dynamite that still lights the torch for modern acts more than two decades later.
They became the voice of an underground movement, spurring iconic gold and platinum records (2000's New Found Glory, 2002's Sticks & Stones, and 2004's Catalyst), countless MTV appearances, an entire subgenre (easycore) and sold-out tours the world over.
New Found Glory has always been about the same thing - honesty, community, and positivity. After 25+ years of being a band, 11 studio albums, one live album, one Christmas album, one acoustic album, two EPs, and four cover albums, New Found Glory's ethos has never wavered; they always strive to be the friend you always need and always understands you.
New Found Glory is Jordan Pundik (lead vocals), Chad Gilbert (guitar), Ian Grushka (bass guitar) and Cyrus Bolooki (drums).

The All American Rejects are excited to bring you their highly anticipated return to the stage with the Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour, their first headlining tour in nearly a decade. The boys bring along special guests, New Found Glory & The Get Up Kids to Shoreline Amphitheatre on Friday, September 29th 2023. So come on, grab some tickets, and this time, don’t let it be your dirty little secret, bring the whole family! It's time you embraced your out-there rock side and let it all out, come on, it’s 2023 for heaven’s sake… you are allowed to have some fun now!!!
The band was speaking about their upcoming dates, and said: “We’ve been trying to get out on the road in a proper way for the last few years. We finally realized after playing When We Were Young that the world was ready to pull out of their ‘guilty pleasure chest’ and celebrate the soundtrack of their youth. When New Found Glory, The Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack and The Get Up Kids signed on, the feeling was ‘This is a celebration of summers gone by.’ It’s time to embrace the cumulative joy of growing up. First we got you to “Swing Swing,” then we became your “Dirty Little Secret,” and you thought “It Would End Tonight” so we could “Move Along,” then we “Gave You Hell” for denying the fact that we’re the band you listened to your entire lives, whether you liked it or not.” The All-American Rejects took part in the ‘When We Were Young Festival’ along with headliners Paramore and My Chemical Romance, way back in October last year, over three dates.
The All-American Rejects are an American rock band from Stillwater, Oklahoma, that was formed in 1999. Lead singer and bassist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist and backup singer Nick Wheeler, rhythm guitarist and backup singer Mike Kennerty, and drummer Chris Gaylor make up the band. On tour, Scott Chesak plays keyboards, piano, and guitar. Wheeler and Ritter are both songwriters for the band; Wheeler is the primary composer, while Ritter is the primary lyricist.
With the release of their self-titled debut album The All-American Rejects in 2002, the band gained widespread recognition. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA, and the single "Swing, Swing" from it was a huge hit. The band's second studio album, Move Along, helped them achieve greater international success in 2005. The hit songs "Dirty Little Secret," "Move Along," and "It Ends Tonight" all made it into the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the album was certified double platinum by the RIAA. When the Earth Comes Down, their third studio album, was released in 2008 and was soon after certified gold by the RIAA. The lead single, "Gives You Hell," became The All-American Rejects' most well-known song to date, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and in the top five in a number of other countries. The band's fourth and final studio album, Kids in the Street, was released in March 2012 and debuted at number 18 on the US Billboard 200 chart. The All-American Rejects have sold more than 10 million records worldwide. They were ranked 73rd on the "Hot 100 Artists of the 2000s" list and 183rd on the "Billboard 200 Artists of the Decade" list.

In a press release sent to ABC15, here’s what the band said in regard to the upcoming tour dates: “ When New Found Glory, The Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack and The Get Up Kids signed on, the feeling was ‘This is a celebration of summers gone by.’ It’s time to embrace the cumulative joy of growing up. First we got you to “Swing Swing,” then we became your “Dirty Little Secret,” and you thought “It Would End Tonight” so we could “Move Along,” then we “Gave You Hell” for denying the fact that we’re the band you listened to your entire lives, whether you liked it or not.”

The Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour Arrives in Denver
The Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour Featuring The All-American Rejects, New Found Glory, Motion City Soundtrack and The Get Up Kids Perform at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, CO.
Article and photos by Negean Mohi
September 22nd, 2023
The first show of the second leg of the Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour started off with the light stretching of 40-year-olds´ limbs and afternoon espressos (to be regretted later in the evening) within the hallow halls of the Fillmore Auditorium. Macabrely lit from the beloved chandeliers, the venue was aglow in cool tones as the crowd filed in for a wet hot show. The Fillmore on Colfax Ave is known for being the largest indoor venue in Colorado, and the perfect location for this tour’s line up of ageless talent. It must have been a rather easy decision to select this venue for a line up 20 years in the making.
The Get Up Kids , once a Midwest emo scene band, now an ensemble of grey beards adorned in mid 2000s clothing, jean jackets and band shirts over fading punk rock tattoos and we wouldn’t want to watch them in any other way. They have been producing records since 1995 with their latest album, Problems , released in 2019. They were a solid choice to open the show as they are well-known in the elder emo crowd, and their presence guaranteed to bring the crowd in quickly. After a short set, there was little wiggle room left on the floor.
Motion City Soundtrack ’s reprisal of their line up slot came down to showtime, as vocalist and guitarist, Justin Pierre, appeared sans instrument. He acknowledged an unfamiliar sixth member sharing the stage and a story of personal struggle. Physical and mental strains are not an uncommon hardship among society today, and Justin’s monologue of embracing resources and asking for help did not land on deaf ears, but rather compassionate and commiserative shoulders. His strength was our reward as an ideal energy settled in between the balcony and dancefloor.
Tonight, was a night of breaking down stigmas and being grateful for the present as New Found Glory made an uncharacteristic appearance outside the headlining position on tour. The two-parted tour and supporting role seemed to be by design for anyone following guitarist, Chad Gilbert’s story for the last couple years. In 2021, Chad was diagnosed with Pheochromocytoma, a rare cancer that had spread from his adrenal glands to his spine. Due to this health crisis, he was absent from last year’s Denver show when his cancer came back after remission, and why he debuted a customized single sofa on stage.
Even though his body forced him to take breaks and play while sitting and use lighter guitars than he’s used to, the whole band brought two years’ worth of vigor to make up for what we missed. A newly minted fan-favorite trope of their shows is to bring on an additional guitarist to play rhythm guitar to recreate the full sound of their studio albums. The western states are blessed to know NFG are sharing the stage with the inimitable Anthony Ranieri of Bayside.
NFG manifests the kind of energy any band would want to play to, and The All-American Rejects took an already elevated crowd and took them higher. There were many fans front row with interesting stories of how they got there. One couple was visiting from Las Vegas and only in town for the night. Another woman attended under the guise of chauffeuring her daughter but disclosed she stayed for her favorite band. Lead singer and bassist, Tyson Ritter , emerged in a provocative sheer black romper and bare feet which quickly elicited an intended response from a full sweaty room. I don’t believe there was a single lull in the evening as the whole night felt like a ride in a time machine, and every year we traveled back, a memory unlocked from an easier time when our angst would not fully be appreciated until we could open our eyes again in the present.

On August 25, 2023 The Wet Hot All American Summer Tour took a pit stop at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Made up of bands The All American Rejects , New Found Glory , The Starting Line , and The Get Up Kids it was guaranteed to be a hot show that both young fans and elder emo’s alike could enjoy.
With fans absolutely raving over the supporting acts The Get Up Kids , The Starting Line , and New Found Glory it was evident that the anticipation was rising, and the crowd was electric once the lights dimmed and it was time for our headliner The All American Rejects .
Formed in 1999, Oklahoma based band The All American Rejects quickly took the world by storm in the early 2000’s. Releasing four studio albums to date the most recent in 2012 titled Kids in the Street. Fans young and old crowded the barricade with posters, flags, and decked out in TAAR merch. During the seventeen song set they played popular hits including “Dirty Little Secret,” “I’m Waiting,” “It Ends Tonight,” and closed out with a two song encore that included “Move Along” and fan favorite “Gives You Hell.” As fans sang along, vocalist Tyson Ritter gleamed with joy as he dazed into the crowd. It was evident how much this band loves performing, as well as the appreciation they have for fans. As the four piece band continues on with the night you could see fans laughing, crying, and enjoying the show amongst us. As the night wrapped up, fans could be heard chanting for miles as the band exited the stage. The All American Rejects really brought the music to music city, and we cannot wait to see them again soon.

How much of a splash is there with the Duck Boat tour? Does one get very wet when the boat goes in the water? The tour looks fun but I'd rather not get soaked!
Also, do they provide life jackets?
3 replies to this topic
Christine - it’s been a while since I was on the Duck Tour but my recollection is that you stay totally dry. The seats are up high in the amphibious vehicle and I don’t recall much of a “splash”going in. I think there are life jackets in the ceiling - don’t recall that we put them on as we went into the water. They are safe - and fun!
Likewise, I did not get splashed when I took the Duck Boat Tour.
It is stable and slowly enters the water. It is not like Disney’s Splash Mountsin. If it is raining hard you could get wet but that has nothing to do with going into the river.

Bryan makes it awfully difficult to be in a solemn mood at one of his shows, in short — his penchant for rowdy showmanship ensures that. But there’s another reason to be in a good mood, watching him play: It’s from realizing afresh just how wildly successful he has become by throwing out any playbook that exists for how to get there. His radio play is nearly non-existent… deliberately so, probably, since last week he was sending out complaining tweets when he thought his record label was actively promoting “Pink Skies” to pop radio. (He apologized when it turned out he was mistaken.) He doesn’t do television appearances or interviews. He’s never even had a flashpoint viral moment. It’s just relatable songs, rousingly performed with the spirit of an Okie-fied Springsteen or Mellencamp. This genre-unspecific music is largely being received by a segment of the mainstream country audience that’s been ditching the party anthems of that other big heartland Bryan — Luke — for this one’s more poetic fare.
And he has fantastic taste in collaborators/opening acts. Sunday and Monday is was the War and Treaty invited to Crypto to recreate a duet from his last album, “Hey Driver,” with Sierra Ferrell set to assume the same spot Tuesday night. Even if you don’t love the songs, it’d be difficult to see anything other than sheer upside in how his massive success has gone down.
But there is a lot to love about the songs, too, and not just his ornery-populist methodology. At Crypto, a lot of the two-hour running time was devoted to taking songs that are deeply interior on record and turning them into barnburners, in subtle shifts that didn’t compromise the material’s integrity. His self-titled album from last summer marked a somewhat surprising turn toward quirky, lo-fi production values, but the five songs Bryan played from that album in concert didn’t sound much different from the six he performed from 2022’s more overtly commercial “American Heartbreak.” Starting the show with the ostensibly contemplative “Overtime,” Bryan managed to turn it into more of an obvious live blockbuster just by bellowing the title word instead of murmuring it, at the end of every stanza — the kind of small shift that can make a big difference in a performance. But when it came time to end the song, he toned it down again. Bryan isn’t afraid to wrap up a tune on a hushed note, even finishing songs with an unresolved-sounding a cappella coda now and again, in an arena show that is also duty-bound to deliver a fair amount of bluster.
These songs were equal parts country, Western (not to confuse, conflate or hyphenate those two), folk, rock, and the folk-rock hybrid formerly known as stomp-and-holler. Steel guitar and lap steel (albeit not on a lap, but played in a standing position) became increasingly utilized over the course of the set, but played with more of a rock feel than anything tying them to traditional Nashville. Bryan noted that his usual violin player was absent on paternity leave, which gave a chance for a guest fiddler, Hannah Cohen, to shine in the spotlight and happily disrupt the otherwise all-male lineup. Utility player Read Connelly gets the biggest recurring comic moment of the night, during the show’s inevitable climax, “Revival,” during which he falls to the stage floor and plays dead for a pregnant pause, only to snap back to life — revival , get it? — and, from a crouch, burn through the night’s first and last major banjo solo.
The show found Bryan in a similar position to where he was when he came through Crypto.com last year for a single-nighter: about to release an album, and not about to give away too much about it. Other than “Pink Skies,” the only number he performed to preview the next record was its apparent title song, “The Great American Bar Scene.” (As wtih “Oklahoma Smokeshow,” he changed the location in the title to “California,” so that the cutoff Lakers jersey he was wearing wasn’t the only sop to local culture.) That’s more than he played from a forthcoming album last year, when he didn’t preview any of the songs from “Zach Bryan” even though that album release was days away at the time. It’s unclear when “Great American Bar Scene” might be coming out: In a recent tweet, Bryan made it sound as if he might imminently, spontaneously release it, but on stage, he said only that the album is forthcoming “this year,” which leaves a lot of wiggle room. Whenever he does opt to drop it, it could be the album to finally dislodge Taylor Swift from the top spot; there probably aren’t enough variants in the world to keep Bryan from taking an appointed spot at No. 1. But with a shortage of live previews, fans will have to keep guessing whether the album will be as interior as the self-titled effort or as anthemic as “American Heartbreak.”
The presence of the husband-and-wife duo the War and Treaty as a galvanizing opening act of course bid well for a sure highlight in the headliner’s set: a revival of Bryan’s duet with Michael Trotter on “Hey Driver,” possibly the best song off last year’s self-titled album. Bryan apologized for all the “shitty” versions he and his band had done of the song on tour to date without the Trotters, before launching into a new vocal arrangement that, unlike the record, made room for Michael’s wife Tanya, and three-part harmony instead of two-. An additional, humble solution on Bryan’s part was just to hand over to Tanya some of the lead vocal lines he handled in the studio. The War and Treaty have been doing their own cover of the song out on tour (including two performances at Stagecoach), but getting to hear this blend of voices was a treat you’d wish could be handed down to all the audiences along Bryan’s tour routing this year, and not just a selected few.
Bryan and his band made their way backstage through a path cut through the audience, then returned through the same open tunnel, bringing in tow some of the backstage VIPs — Tate McRae, Casey Affleck and various local sports figures among them — for the traditional jump-around “all-night revival” finale to his show. It’s a churchy way to go out, but after a lot of down-and-out sketches dressed up as rabble-rousers throughout the preceding two hours, it didn’t hurt to finally revert to some pure, star-studded Pentecostalism at quitting time.

Waited till the last minute to “Check Yes or No” on George Strait tickets?
Not a problem.
The 71-year-old country legend will be stomping down to Rutherford, NJ’s MetLife Stadium on Saturday, June 8 to deliver the fifth installment of his annual ten-concert, cross-country series after he announced his retirement from touring once his final “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour” concluded a decade ago.
At this particular show, third concourse tickets start at $71 before fees on Vivid Seats and climb up to $568 for prime viewing at the time of publication.
While that may sound pricey, Strait’s Garden State gig — which has the cheapest tickets available of any of his remaining 2024 concerts — will surely be a treat for fans based on what we’ve seen of his shows on Instagram .
Better yet, Strait’s bringing a few friends along for the ride as well. Before he takes the stage, ten-time Grammy Award winner Chris Stapleton and the trailblazing vocal band, Little Big Town will open the show for Strait.
As for what to expect from “The King,” the star often cranks out dozens of his chart-topping tunes including “All My Ex’s Live In Texas,” “Check Yes Or No,” “Amarillo By Morning,” “Carrying Your Love With Me,” along with many more singalong hits, based on our findings at Set List FM .
Clearly, you’ll want to make this show a priority. As Strait says — “ I ain’t here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.”
Can’t make it this weekend? Get the low-down on the rest of George Strait’s 2024 Stadium Tour below.
All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.
George Strait tickets 2024
A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found here:
(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)
Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.
They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.
Chris Stapleton tour
Looking for a Stapleton fix this summer? Well, you’re in luck.
In addition to accompanying Strait , the singer-songwriter will also be bringing his ongoing headlining tour, the ‘All-American Road Show’ to venues across the country, with notable stops in Seattle, Nashville, and Los Angeles.
Can’t wait?
Snatch your tickets for all of the “Broken Halo” singer’s shows here .
George Strait set list
Strait takes a true “Give all I’ve got to give” approach when crafting his set lists.
You can expect him to mix some treasured classics with newer sounds from his latest “Honky Tonk Time Machine” album.
At a show earlier this month, he even teased the audience with a few songs from his upcoming “Cowboys and Dreamers” record.
Here’s an idea of Strait’s openers, closers, and encores, based on what he played live at show last year.
01.) “Deep in the Heart of Texas” (Perry Como song) 02.) “Here for a Good Time” 03.) “Ocean Front Property” 04.) “Check Yes or No” 05.) “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” 06.) “Wrapped” (Bruce Robison cover) 07.) “Nobody in His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her” 08.) “I Got a Car” 09.) “I Saw God Today” 10.) “Every Little Honky Tonk Bar” 11.) “How ’bout Them Cowgirls” 12.) “Drinkin’ Man” 13.) “You Don’t Know What You’re Missing” 14.) “That’s What Breaking Hearts Do” 15.) “Give It Away” 16.) “Codigo” 17.) “Waymore Blues” (Waylon Jennings cover) 18.) “The Weight of the Badge 19.) “The Fireman” 20.) “The Chair” 21.) “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright” 22.) “Amarillo by Morning” 23.) “Run” 24.) “Come on Joe” 25.) “It Just Comes Natural” 26.) “I’ll Always Remember You” 27.) “Troubadour” 28.) “Unwound”

Jim Nantz defends CBS coverage after ‘annoyed’ Tour winner’s complaint

Jim Nantz defended CBS's drone usage in the wake of Sunday's drama.

Welcome back to another extended edition of the Hot Mic Newsletter, GOLF’s weekly send covering all things golf media from me, James Colgan. The topic of this week’s newsletter is Sunday’s drone drama on the PGA Tour. As always, if you’d like to be the first to receive exclusive insights like these directly from me, click the link here to subscribe to our free newsletter send. But first, we go back the skies of Ontario, where Jim Nantz has the latest on a suddenly forming golf TV debate.
I laughed when CBS cameras first showed Robert MacIntyre, then leading by three shots at the RBC Canadian Open, complaining to a rules official about the noise emitting from CBS’s drones.
But then a few seconds passed and I realized he was serious.
“I’m not gonna tell you again,” MacIntyre said. “I spoke to the rules official before. That’s ridiculous.”
MacIntyre felt the drones were unduly onerous to his pre-shot process, and felt the drones were particularly discriminating against him because he was one of the field’s few non-American or Canadian players.
Anybody who’s traveled around with the PGA Tour will tell you that CBS’s drone fleet remains the industry standard. While NBC has opted for smaller (and quieter), consumer-type drones to capture their broadcast’s images, CBS has coopted a collection of super-high-tech gadgets that look like small helicopters floating through the sky.
The difference in is clearly noticeable to golf fans watching on TV, but the downside of that difference is that CBS’s cameras make noticeably more noise from the sky than their NBC counterparts. On Sunday at the Canadian Open, MacIntyre was clearly nonplussed with the buzzing happening overhead.
The CBS team complied with Bobby’s request, sending the drone back to earth and paving the runway for the first win of MacIntyre’s PGA Tour career. After the round, though, it was clear that MacIntyre hadn’t gotten over the indignity.
“If it didn’t go away, I was going to start throwing my clubs at it,” MacIntyre said. “That’s how annoyed I was getting.”
“I had a job to do, and anything that was getting in my way was getting told to get out of the way. I was focused today and that drone was doing my head, and so I told it to get away.”
NANTZ’S DEFENSE
Kudos to Jim Nantz, who made a well-timed — and I thought salient — defense of golf TV as MacIntyre was getting heated on the ninth hole.
“I will say this, drones are a big part of the future of televised golf, and if you’re gonna be a world-class player, which he’s gonna be, you’re gonna have to get used to this,” Nantz said. “That’s part of the big-time.”
Great announcers have a knack for synthesizing complicated situations in simple terms. In a rare instance, Nantz put his finger on the scale here to speak in defense of his colleagues, and I felt the broadcast was better for it.
FAIR OR FOUL?
MacIntyre’s gripe raises an interesting question in the golf world: How much sway does a player deserve on their environment when they’re contending for a tournament? And who ultimately wins out — the guy playing for big money or the TV partner financing most of it?
Like Nantz, I’m naturally biased toward the TV folks, who already expend considerable resources into being as interesting and unobtrusive as possible during tournament Sundays. These folks obviously weren’t trying to undermine MacIntyre — or any other player, for that matter.
But that doesn’t make MacIntyre 100 percent wrong for having a beef. Unless you’re Tiger Woods, the truth is that media attention is different based on your leaderboard position. In all likelihood, Bobby was hearing more on Sunday than any other day of his career.
As many readers have pointed out, it’s fair for MacIntyre to demand competitive fairness when he’s walking inside the ropes at an event. But it’s also fair to wonder where to draw the line when a player is overly sensitive to the things happening outside of the ropes (as some members of the CBS team appeared to be alluding during Sunday’s telecast).
We hear players speak often about how pressure is a privilege . Part of that privilege is media attention, which follows closer when tensions are high. That might not feel fair, but it is reality.
THE BIG PICTURE
Ultimately, everyone’s obligation is the same: to make the tournament as interesting as possible to watch. As Nantz pointed out, fans have shown a real affinity for drone content, which means the fleet of flying CBS cameras isn’t going anywhere. But MacIntyre also has a right to make sure his entertainment level isn’t being affected by an undue outside influence.
We’ll give MacIntyre the pass for his reaction with this one, especially considering his inexperience with Sundays in contention. But, as Nantz said, if he’s hoping for a career in situations like these, he’d best get used to the noise.
