In Jammu & Kashmir also, the tourism sector is playing a huge role in the overall development of UT’s economy. Kashmir has rightly been described as “Heaven on Earth” or “Paradise on the Earth” for its breath taking beauty throughout the world. Tourism sector has a great potential in Jammu &  Kashmir and it also provides immense business opportunities for the people here. Tourism is perhaps the only sector which starts paying off immediately as it has no gestation period. It has played an important role in the development of the economy, of J&K. The industry has provided jobs to a very large number, especially for the younger generation to generation, and the generations of economic activity in the primary, the secondary, and the secondary sectors of the state, which owes much to the industry. Jammu & Kashmir is one of the leading tourist destinations where tourists love to be. It is well known that around 50%-60% people of the state are directly or indirectly related with the tourism. Jammu and Kashmir economy is a service economy where majority of revenue is coming from tourism sector.

Kashmir, often described as the Switzerland of Asia is a natural magnet for tourism with its alpine forests, balmy climate, high mountains, lakes, rushing streams, ski slopes and verdant valleys. The beauty of the landscapes and terrain are absolutely breathtaking and truly mesmerizing in every sense of the word. Kashmir Valley is one of the top tourist destinations of India. It is home to several valleys such as the Kashmir Valley, Chenab Valley, Sindh Valley and Lidder Valley, Bungus Valley, Gurez Valley, Lolab Valley and other such various unnoticed valleys. Jammu and Kashmir forms the crown of the nation where one could lose oneself in the beauty of nature.

Jammu & Kashmir has immense potential for tourism from both domestic as well as international tourists. There are number of locations which are untapped and can be developed as major tourist destinations, having all the natural as well as the cultural resources for attracting tourists. Some of the important natural resources are excellent climate, beautiful lakes, locations for adventure sports, wild life, trout fish, natural and manmade parks. As for the cultural resources, the UT has some of the most important religious shrines of Hindus, historical monuments, plethora of local festivals, distinct cuisine, craftsmanship skills for intricate and fine woodwork, woolens, carpets, textiles, paper mache, inlay work etc. In addition to traditional recreational tourism, vast scope exists for adventure, pilgrimage, spiritual, and health tourism. The natural beauty and picturesque locations have made it a favoured destination for tourists across the world. Jammu is famous for its temples, while Kashmir Valley is known for its lakes and gardens.

Tourism is known to be the back bone of the Jammu and Kashmir and holds a strategic place in J&K economy by providing economic benefits like Employment, Foreign Exchange, Infrastructure development and development of local industries like Handicrafts and Handlooms which has placed J&K always in the limelight at the national as well as international level. Several remarkable initiatives were undertaken across the length and breadth of J&K to rejuvenate the dwindling economic landscape which was affected due to relentless wrath of Covid-19. In one such major intervention for upliftment of tourism sector in J&K, Union government made record budget allocation of 786 crores in budget for tourism sector here which is 509 crores higher than last budgetary allocation with an intent to boost tourism and allied services of Jammu and Kashmir. In commensuration with this, government of J&K has also undertaken several initiatives to give further stimulus and impetus to tourism sector here. J&K Bank has formulated exclusive scheme providing hassle free credit for the conversion of residential properties into tourist guest houses. The Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Policy-2020 aims at making J&K most preferred all-season tourist destination for domestic and foreign tourists in India by 2025, generate employment opportunities for the people, impart training to around 4000 tourist service providers over the next ten years, promote all kind of tourism across the UT, and to promote city wise events and festivals with a pre-defined calendar and promoting the same at national and international level.

In a mega push to promote ecotourism in Jammu and Kashmir, government has approved development of seven new trekking routes in various wildlife protected areas. The night flight has started operating from Srinagar Airport marking the dawn of a new era and indicating improvement in air connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of country and other countries. In one of the remarkable initiatives launched by government of J&K, is launch of Jammu And Kashmir Tourist village Network under “Mission Youth” to boost rural tourism. The aim of the initiative is to transform 75 villages of known historical, picturesque, beauty and cultural significance into tourist village. Hospitality tech company OYO on Thursday partnered with the Jammu and Kashmir administration to launch a rural tourism initiative, ‘Crown of Incredible India’, across the Union Territory to give a boost to the distressed tourism industry and turn the youth into start-up entrepreneurs in J&K. Another aim is to promote youth led sustainable tourism, community entrepreneurship and to empower women and youth by offering direct and indirect employment opportunities. All this will help in talking a long step to boost rural economy. A provision for multitude of benefits has been there in J&K tourist village network scheme like Rs 10 lakh for infrastructure, camping material and equipment, home stays etc. Upto Rs 10 lakh for shooting any film or songs by empanelled companies, and upto Rs 2 lakh to local groups for shooting songs etc.

Moreover, river festivals on the lines of Ganga festival are organized to create awareness among the general public regarding cleanliness and preservation of rivers in Jammu and Kashmir. Further at the global level, Jammu and Kashmir tourism organized an outreach meet with the stakeholders of the Middle East and adjoining Countries. The aim has been to attract tourists from the Middle East to explore the natural beauty, cuisine, art, culture and other products offered by J&K. Jammu and Kashmir government launched new film policy to boost tourism and investment in the union territory. The policy envisaged the setting up of Jammu and Kashmir film development council (JKFDC).

The Department of Tourism, J&K is the main developmental, promotional and regulatory arm of the J&K Government. Its main role comprises of overall planning and execution of schemes for the development, up-gradation and improvement of the tourism infrastructure. Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to develop 5 tourist villages within Dal Lake in Srinagar. These villages are Kachri Mohalla, Sofi Mohalla, Tinda Mohallah, Akhoon Mohalla, and Vegetable market. These villages will have all basic facilities for inhabitants as well as tourists and local visitors. They will also provide home stay facilities to tourists. Support to the private sector industry in the form of incentives for settings up various tourist facilities as well as for promotion and marketing of their products and services. Promotion and marketing of various tourist destinations and products of the regulation of the travel-trade by enforcement of provisions of J&K Registration of Tourist Trade Act (1978/82).

The Department of Tourism has Tourist Offices in all the tourist resorts of J & K. In addition, there are 6 promotional offices outside the J&K, one each at New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. Also, there is one provincial Director of Tourism each for Jammu and Kashmir Divisions. The Department also has Engineering Division under its control for the implementation and execution of various schemes for formulating and monitoring the plan schemes, the Department has a Planning Wing and for overall marketing and promotion, the Department has a Publicity Wing.

The commercial activities in the tourism sector from the Government side are looked after by a public sector corporation know as the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (J&K TDC). It operates and manages Government accommodation in Tourist Centers at Srinagar and Jammu, and the Tourist Complexes, Hotels and Tourist bungalows in various resorts. The Corporation also runs a Travel Division, which organizes package tours to various parts of the State and also arranges transport facilities for the tourists.

Tourism should be shifted from being a seasonal commotion to all year around activity. Proper tourism marketing of each season can increase the tourist activity manifold. Development of a strong network among government and various agencies, which would work towards remarketing Kashmir tourism on modern basis. Identifying new tourist spots will go a long way in enhancing tourism potential of the valley. Jammu and Kashmir tourism needs enough measures to provide proper security to tourists so that a sense of safeness will be felt by the tourists. Tourism is the life line of Jammu and Kashmir and all possible efforts need to be undertaken for retaining, maintaining and sustaining it. Tourism can play an effective role in integrating the entire universe. Tourism opens up new window for resources, both investment generation and revenue generation leading to employment generation as well as socioeconomic development of the local populace.

Finally, Kashmir is an area with great tourism potential & is a leading edge of development. Kashmir is considered as a most elite destination in the world. Tourism is the main industry in the state. It is regarded as multi-segmented industry therefore, provides different types of jobs like hotel managers, guides, travel agents and others. The enchanting geographical landscape & range of ecosystems leaves a lasting impression on the tourists in Kashmir.

There is a need to build more facilities and to work on some flaws. Tourists around the world love to visit the UT because the valley is blessed with the beauty of nature. The UT should focus towards the infrastructure development so that more and more tourists visit every year. Rural and Border tourism growth should be one of the Tourism Department’s priorities, and the government should work on improving the rural sector’s overall infrastructure. Tourism Department should encourage local vloggers, bloggers, and authors to write more about the region’s unknown places.

This may be done by creating a welcoming atmosphere and upgrading the different amenities. For the economic growth to be more successful, the government must implement more liberal policies, which will lead to more jobs for its youth and a better quality of life for its citizens.

Encourage EcoTourism in J&K

google news

Blessed with natural scenic beauty, Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as one of the major tourist places.

Pre-1947, J&K was the favorite haunt of rulers including Mughals, Maharajas and even British who used to spend their holidays in its breathtaking destinations. Visitors from Europe were spellbound by Kashmir’s natural beauty.

They were instrumental in developing houseboats and adventure sports on professional lines. The Emporium building along The Bund was originally a British Residency.

The stretch from The Bund to Shivpora was known as European Quarters as it used to bustle with the British. It is said that a British Colonel living in a houseboat near the Bund introduced water sports in the river.

Decades passed and gradually J&K made its place on the global tourism map. Visitors were impressed by the natural beauty and importantly hospitality of people of J&K.

Hill stations like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Yousmarg, in Kashmir became world famous for snow-capped mountains, lush meadows and gushing streams.

Tourist places like Mughal Gardens, Tulip Garden, Dal Lake, Doodhpathri, Achabal, Sanasar, Mansar and Patnitop also are in the must-see itinerary of visitors. Official date states that 1.88 crore visitors including pilgrims came to J&K in 2022. Of this 26.73 lakh tourists visited Kashmir which is more than double the previous highest of 12.99 lakh in the year 2016.

Union Minister for Tourism G Kishan Reddy recently said that it is expected that there will be 20 million tourist arrivals including foreigners to J&K this year.

In view of increasing rush of tourists, there is a need to promote lesser known tourist destinations in J&K. It is a welcome step that the Government has started the process to promote 75 off-beat tourist destinations. This will lessen the burden on most frequently visited tourism destinations in the union territory.

J&K is dotted with religious, heritage and cultural sites and these should be included in the tourist itinerary. Improving facilities for tourists is important to make their stay comfortable. But care has to be taken not to disturb environs of these offbeat eco-fragile tourist destinations. There is a need to promote sustainable tourism.

We have an example of the famous ski-resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir, which is witnessing a huge rush of tourists far above its carrying capacity. This can have serious ramifications on wildlife including bears and snow leopards besides hundreds of plant species and avifauna in the ski-resort.

We have seen the ski-restore has been witnessing frequent avalanches for the last several years. Experts blame increased footfall of tourists exceeding carrying capacity for affecting snow cover, triggering rise in temperature which results in avalanches.

Environmentalists warn that if the carrying capacity of eco-fragile areas is disturbed, damage will be irreparable. Subsequently it results in disasters like flash floods, water shortage and massive waste generation. Eco-tourism has emerged as one of the most important sectors of the international tourism industry.

This form of sustainable tourism has assumed importance as it encourages people to learn and conserve diverse landscapes, wildlife and cultures. Many places in the world are thriving due to the promotion of Eco-tourism. Dotted with rainforests, beaches, volcanoes and mountains, Costa Rica is one of the preferred eco-tourism destinations.

Kenya is billed as one of the best eco-tourism sites in Africa. Authorities created an organisation called ‘Ecotourism Kenya’. Their work involves promoting sustainable tourism that will conserve Kenya’s natural environment and improve the livelihoods of local communities.

Home to 54 national parks, over one million tourists every year visit Kenya. This has led the government to stop illegal poaching, ban single-use plastics and plastic bags while promoting sustainable tourism.

Being an eco-tourist destination for the past 33 years, Bhutan has been charging visitors a daily Sustainable Development Fee. Originally $65/day, the fee has now jumped to $200/day.

The money is used on eco-projects including offsetting Bhutan’s carbon footprint from tourism, supporting community education, organic farming and upskilling workers in the tourism industry. In 2017, Bhutan became the first carbon-negative country.

Having unique landscape, cultural diversity and heritage value, J&K can become one of the leaders of Eco-Tourism. It has natural places, lush green forests, springs, rivers, lakes, wetlands, pleasant weather, and diversity of culture. Kashmir has immense potential for golf and adventure tourism.

The sprawling Royal Springs Golf Course (RSGC) on the banks of Dal Lake has won praise world over for its unique topography. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, a well-known American golf course designer, in 2001.

G20 delegates from various countries were left spellbound recently by the 300-acre RSGC comprising greens, rolling hills, forest, ponds, wilderness and marsh amid backdrop of Zabarwan mountain draped by thick conifer cover.

Health and wellness tourism can also be started in J&K. We can also promote trekking on an international scale but in a regulated manner. But visit near glaciers must be restricted.

The Government has selected 300 destinations for promoting film tourism in J&K this year. Bollywood is resuming its date with the natural beauty of Kashmir. Songs in the backdrop of the waters of Dal lake, scenic landscapes of Pahalgam and Gulmarg have been appreciated.

Secretary Tourism, Syed Abid Rasheed, who is spearheading J&K’s tourism promotion, believes that there are many destinations much better than European destinations in the UT. “Film tourism will be promoted in a major way so that many untouched destinations are explored.”

People are fascinated to see scenic places of J&K,that is why filmmakers are fascinated to make its forests, lakes and landscapes part of their film. The Gurez area in Bandipora district is fast emerging as a tourist destination. Government must ensure to promote Gurez and other similar far-off places as eco-tourism destinations.

Instead of concrete structures, tented tourist villages can be set-up. Existing traditional houses can be converted into homestays for tourists in picturesque Gurez of Bangus valleys. This way, tourists can enjoy scenic beauty of these offbeat destinations but also experience rich culture and heritage.

Tourists, especially foreigners, love to stay close to nature. Lieutenant Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha has been making all efforts to promote the Union Territory as a preferred eco tourist destination. Home-stays and tented accommodations are becoming popular among domestic and foreign tourists as well as backpackers. “J&K UT government is making efforts to promote tent stay at scenic locations that will deliver rapid growth to the tourism industry,” the LG had stated.

The LG last year launched 75 Home-Stays in Rural areas to commemorate ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ in partnership with JLRLM and OYO Group under project ‘Crown of Incredible India’.

“The launch of Tourist Village Network, in which Mission Youth has selected 75 such villages under both the Jammu, and Kashmir divisions, known for their unique landscape, cultural diversity and heritage value will go a long way in expanding the tourism ecosystem to rural areas of UT,” the LG had stated.

Tourism sector is one of the main drivers of the economy of J&K. We have to understand that tourism will sustain only if nature sustains. Eco-tourism can facilitate tourists to experience nature as well as culture prevailing in natural areas without damaging the environment.

J&K Government and stakeholders need to encourage Eco-tourism activities as the UT is one of the environmentally fragile zones prone to natural disasters. Sustainable tourism will empower us economically and ecologically.

1.62 crore tourists visited J&K since Jan 2022, highest in 75 years: Govt

Around 1.62 crore tourists have visited Jammu and Kashmir since January 2022, the union territory government said on Thursday. The directorate of information & public relations (DIPR) of the J&K government said the tourist footfall in the Union territory this year is the highest since India's independence, reported news agency ANI.

The figures were released a day after Union home minister Amit Shah said the region that was a terrorist hotspot earlier has now become a tourist hotspot due to the policies of the Modi government.

Shah said, "under the rule of three families, only ₹ 15,000 crore investment came in Jammu and Kashmir in 70 years, but under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, an investment of Rs. 56,000 crore has come in just three years."

"Earlier the region was a terrorist hotspot but now it has become a tourist hotspot. Earlier, a maximum of six lakh tourists used to visit the Kashmir Valley every year, whereas this year alone till now, 22 lakh tourists have visited the region, giving employment to thousands of youth, and this process will be further strengthened," he said.

Shah was on a three-day visit to the Jammu and Kashmir which concluded Wednesday. He inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 240 development projects of about ₹ 2,000 crore in Srinagar. Before addressing a gathering in Baramulla, the home minister also had his bullet proof glass removed, a gesture he had previously made in October 2021 as he was addressing a rally in Srinagar.

The Union minister juxtaposed two political models that operate in Kashmir, drawing a difference between the “Gupkar model” and that of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led BJP. He said that Prime Minister Modi had taken the region’s politics down to the “panches, sarpanches, BDC and DDC’s” from being the sole preserve of the “families that ruled Kashmir.”

Election latest: Sunak questioned on 'nightmare' poll - as Tories employ 'risky' strategy

Rishi Sunak has been speaking from the G7 summit in Italy, where he says the world today is "more dangerous than it has been for decades". Meanwhile, Nigel Farage has demanded to be included in a leaders' event after a poll put Reform ahead of the Tories.

Thanks for joining us on another packed day in the election campaign.

Nigel Farage said he could be the official "voice of opposition" to Labour after a poll showed Reform UK pulling slightly ahead of the Conservatives - and said his party could get more than six million votes.

He also demanded to be involved in a leaders' general election event next week.

At the G7 summit in Italy, Rishi Sunak brushed off the YouGov poll result and said a vote for Reform would "give a blank cheque to Labour".

Elsewhere, the parliamentary watchdog said it was "satisfied" that Scottish Conservatives leader Douglas Ross didn't break expenses rules after "reviewing" media reports that he claimed for journeys to his job as a football assistant referee.

And our political editor Beth Rigby  lifted the lid on what it was like to prepare, execute (and almost miss) Sky News' big leaders event on Wednesday night.

We are are now pausing coverage for the evening. Join us on the campaign trail again in the morning. Goodnight!

Asked if he'll be voting Tory on 4 July, former justice secretary David Gauke says he is "considering his options".

He says it wouldn't benefit the country to have a "massive" Labour majority.

He adds that he'd be "minded" to vote Conservative if the candidate near him was "someone who would stand up to Nigel Farage" and stop the Tories from becoming a "fully fledged obvious party of the right".

"But... I think there is going to be a big battle in the Conservative Party at the end of this process, as to whether they open the door to Nigel Farage," he says.

Earlier today we sat down with  David Gauke , who previously served as justice secretary under Theresa May.

Asked how the Conservative election campaign is going, Mr Gauke said "it's not going at all" if the polls are anything to go by.

He said the plan would have been to "substantially" reduce Labour's lead over the past few weeks - but added "there's no sign of that".

Mr Gauke pointed to "difficulty" over Rishi Sunak's D-Day disaster, but he also said the party's plan to "squeeze the support of Reform hasn't worked".

Questioned about the YouGov poll which shows Reform edging ahead of the Tories, the former politician said there's "real concern about the future of centre right politics as a consequence of the rise of Nigel Farage".

He said the rise of Reform will "help Labour win a bigger majority".

But he added that it'll also pile pressure on the Conservatives "in a way that... [it's] bad news for the country if what we end up with in British politics is a Labour Party versus essentially a populist party of the right that jettisons any attempt to be a mainstream centre right party".

Conservatives 'not deserving of public trust'

Mr Gauke said the "problems" the Tories are facing are a "consequence of moving... essentially to the right of the party in choosing Boris Johnson and then... Liz Truss".

He said the party is "neither competent nor deserving of the trust of the British public".

He added that Mr Sunak is partly a "victim of the circumstances he has inherited".

Alison McGovern is next questioned on a recent comment by economists that Labour and the Conservatives are involved in a "conspiracy of silence" with people over the state of public finances.

The shadow employment minister says it's "helpful" for parties' plans to be "scrutinised" - but suggests the comment by the Institute for Fiscal Studies is based on "what would happen if we don't get that growth in our economy".

She says Labour has a "broader plan for growth" which will be supported by investing in public services.

Asked how Labour can be trusted in the face of the IFS's analysis, Ms McGovern says: "I welcome the scrutiny, but I would say we've got a plan that is both setting out immediate first steps and also a longer term mission to change our economy and make it more sustainable.

"It's the combination of those two things that will make sure we don't have any return to austerity," she says.

Next up is shadow employment minister Alison McGovern, who is discussing the plans for mental health which Labour has been campaigning on today.

Ms McGovern says people have had a "really hard time" in recent years and mental health support needs to be expanded.

She says it isn't just about having sufficient public services, but is about Labour's plan for growth as well, noting that too many people are unable to work or "do the kind of work that they really want to".

"That's holding back our economy too," she says.

Host Ali Fortescue puts to the shadow minister that Labour is pinning a lot of its hopes on economic growth - and asks what will happen if it's not achieved.

Ms McGovern says the country has seen over the past 14 years of Conservative rule "what can happen if the economy doesn't grow".

But pressed on what Labour's plans are, she says the party has set out where it can "bring money in reasonably" through "tax that should be collected" - and has laid out where it can invest in public services.

"We've got a plan for growth that will help our economy move on," she says.

We're bringing you more from Rishi Sunak's news conference at the G7 summit now, as the PM is being asked about yesterday's YouGov poll.

The poll - described by our political correspondent Rob Powell as a "nightmare" for the Tories - put Reform ahead of the Conservatives for the first time.

Asked why Tory voters appear to be turning to Reform, Mr Sunak says: "I think we're only halfway through this campaign and the Conservative Party and me are going to fight for every single vote until the last day.

"And you know, what you saw this week was actually an important moment in the campaign because the only poll that matters is the one on July 4.

"What you did see this week is the two leading parties put out their manifestos for the future of our country, and there's a very clear choice."

He adds that if the poll were replicated on election day, this would be "handing a blank cheque to Keir Starmer to increase people's taxes on their home, their car, their job, their pension, their house, that's what it will do".

"So I'm going to continue fighting very hard to make sure everyone understands the choice that's ahead of them," he says.

First up on the Politics Hub show is former deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine.

Asked how he thinks the election campaign is going for the Conservatives, he first says the party has presided over an "extraordinarily difficult period of economic history".

He says the Tories have done some "very remarkable and impressive things" but concedes that people now feel "frustrated" and want "change".

"The real judgement you've got to make in this election is what do you mean by change?" he says.

Lord Heseltine says the "issue at the heart of the election" is "people".

He points to Nigel Farage as someone he believes is "prepared to exploit that human anxiety about anyone who's different".

"You can whip up all sorts of horrendous emotions... that's what Nigel Farage is a past master at doing. The only consequence of what he is doing is that you will have a bigger Labour majority," he says.

Tories 'can't fester racism and nationalism'

Lord Heseltine says he would be "horrified" if Mr Farage were to be welcomed into the Conservative Party.

He says that if the Tories were to lose the election, their "return to power will be led from the centre ground".

"Certainly it will not happen by festering those most basic human instincts of racism and and nationalism," he says.

Asked whether he feels heartbroken at what's happened to the party, Lord Heseltine says he can't help but "feel sad" after decades of service.

"This is not the end of the Conservative Party, they will be back," he says.

Speaking on the Politics Hub programme, our correspondent Rob Powell says the Conservatives are facing a "nightmare".

A YouGov poll yesterday put Reform ahead of the Tories for the first time - something that will have sparked fear among the Conservative ranks.

Rob says there are caveats that apply: this is just one poll, and parties like Reform tend to do better in polling than voting.

But he says the Conservatives "started this campaign talking about narrowing the gap with Labour" and "we're now talking about having to leapfrog over Reform to even get to Labour".

The Tories have also started pushing a message about stopping a Labour "super majority".

While this is a "subtle change", Rob says, he thinks it is a "risky strategy".

"If you're sending out messages that you might be about to lose, that can suppress turnout," he says.

Rishi Sunak is asked how quickly decisions made by G7 leaders on illegal migration will make a difference to arrivals into the UK.

He's also asked if it's "too late" to deal with the "threat" posed by Reform UK.

Mr Sunak replies that it's the "first time" the summit has had a "dedicated discussion on migration".

"The fact that the G7 is even discussing migration is itself something of note," he says.

The prime minister says leaders have agreed to target illegal gangs and "cooperate and work together" to share intelligence.

He does not respond to the part of the question asking about Reform.

We are halfway through the campaign, and something pretty extraordinary has happened.

Reform are ahead of the Conservatives.

It's just one You Gov poll - others give the Conservatives a bigger lead on Reform.

But it does matter. It matters because it gives Nigel Farage's words weight when he says his party is now the opposition to Labour.

It matters because it comes after the Conservative manifesto - a moment where parties would usually see a poll bounce. 72-pages the PM threw everything at to try to shift the dial.

Number 10 have got to be wondering what leavers are left to pull?

And what comes next matters not just for the outcome of this election, but for the future of the Conservative Party and centre right British politics.
