Asaya is a wellness oasis located 6th and 7th floors of Rosewood Hotel in Hong Kong

There are countless reasons to visit Hong Kong. The city, also known as the Fragrant Harbour, is a shopping mecca, international financial hub, and haven for foodies. It has also emerged as the region’s center for culture, architecture, and arts. Through expat friends who have relocated there, I’ve discovered other facets of Hong Kong that are less known to most. Beneath the dense wall of skyscrapers, constant bustle of activity, and frenetic pace, lies a wellness culture and consciousness that endeavors to cultivate mindfulness and sense of balance.

On a recent trip to one of my favorite Asian destinations, rest and rejuvenation at Asaya was the only thing on the itinerary. It was the first time that had I traveled to the vibrant, cosmopolitan city for wellness, and the experience revealed more reason to keep returning to Hong Kong.

I arrived at the 6th floor of the Rosewood Hotel early in the afternoon. Walnut elevator doors decked with art deco patterns opened to reveal an expansive wellness oasis removed from the hectic energy outside. Occupying two floors of the Rosewood Hotel, Asaya Hong is a 40,000 square feet wellness center, which was designed and built to offer city dwellers and travelers an escape from modern living. Pillars of holistic wellness inform the unique features and configuration of the entire space. These are emotional balance, fitness and nutrition, physical therapies, skin health and community.

During my visit, I was treated to 48 uninterrupted hours of pampering and relaxation. I checked into the Asaya Lodge on the 7th Floor a little after lunch. Cocooned by Zen-inspired rooftop gardens, my suite was appointed with all the amenities that I could possibly need for a restorative retreat in the city. An ante room and wellness bar was laid out with healthy nibbles and homebrewed herbal teas. Books on mindfulness had also been integrated into the space. It inspired quiet solitude and less screen time. My wellness coordinator, Vicky, explained, “There are only two lodges at Asaya. Typically, guests stay here for one or two nights so that they can enjoy our customized wellness programs or retreats.”

An elegant walk-in closet adjoined the master suite and bath spa, complete with steam and tub. A door at the back led to my suite’s very own treatment room. There were two massage beds, and a cozy consultation nook. “The Lodges were designed so that guests don’t ever have to leave their rooms for their treatments. Our therapists will come to you. This unique feature allows you to really slow down, relax, and rejuvenate.”

Amenities aside, it was the thoughtful details that made my stay at Asaya Lodge truly unforgettable. On my bed, pillow linens have been monogrammed with my initials. The same had been done with the fluffy robes that hung next to the twin showers. “We were told that you do yoga. So we took the liberty of placing mats in your suite in case you might want to practice before your treatment this afternoon to tomorrow in the morning,” added Vicky.

Dr. Barbara Sturm’s 90-Minute Glow Facial

The rest of the day had been blocked off for a Glow Facial High Touch Facial. Dr. Barbara Sturm treatments and products are known for their science backed, molecular approach. They are formulated to counter inflammation at the cellular level. Dr. Sturm elaborates, “My philosophy is that every skincare routine should combat inflammation, deeply hydrate, nourish, and heal. [It] should be packed with the highest optimal doses of active compounds and void of aggressive ingredients. It is important to heal rather than to attack your skin. If you protect your skin, it will protect you back.”

Dr. Sturm is a beauty pioneer who spearheaded anti-inflammatory treatments for skincare. She also created the Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) facial, otherwise known as the Blood or Vampire Facial. At Asaya, facial treatments integrate the good doctor’s clean and efficacious products with non-invasive skin care protocols and techniques. The Glow Facial was designed and developed by Dr. Sturm herself especially for the wellness oasis.

Inspired by the well-loved Sturmglow treatment, this facial integrates the most soothing anti-aging and lymphatic drainage techniques with LED Light Therapy. The 90-minute skin pampering experience began with a thorough skin assessment. The one-one-on consultation helped to identify current skin concerns and goals. “We will focus on boosting hydration and skin rejuvenation,” determined my skilled facialist as she led me to the massage bed.

She gently began to massage my scalp to help relax the muscles on my face. Makeup Remover was then applied onto the face using lymphatic massage strokes. This was followed by an Enzyme Cleanser for gentle, skin smoothening, and thorough double cleanse. I’ve never been a fan of extraction, but my facialist’s expert hands were light to the touch.

By the time a layer of deeply hydrating Face Mask was applied onto the face, senses were prepped for a nap. As I dozed off, LED Light Therapy was utilized to help boost skin regeneration. Exposure to this regenerating light stimulated skin cells and prepared the surface for an generous application of Dr. Sturm serums. Each one in the personalized skin cocktail was selected by my therapist to deeply hydrate, reduce the appearance of fine lines and protect skin barrier. This was accompanied by a lifting face massage, which applied pressure on specific points of the face.

I headed to the Asaya Kitchen just in time to catch the sunset over the harbor and the property’s infinity pool. Known among discerning diners for its Mediterranean menu and ethos for sustainable sourcing, the restaurant was packed for dinner service. A young, stylish, and jetset crowd filled tables. Organic wines and fresh nectars were served as a prelude to dishes that showcase the diversity of olive oil, grains, seafood, and local produce. Exceptional dishes from Asaya Kitchen that merit another visit include: Focaccia Bun with Cantabarian Anchovies, Zucchini Blossom and Spirulina Olive Oil Spread, Seaweed Tagliolini, and Spanish Sea Bass.

I returned to my lodge that night feeling satisfied, relaxed, and grateful for the opportunity to take some time off from work. As soon as my head hit the linen sheets and my monogrammed pillow, I was immediately transported to dreamland.

The early flight back to Manila had been moved down to a later hour to accommodate a cut, color, and treatment at the newly-opened Rossano Ferretti Hair Spa. Known for his signature Ferretti Metodo or “invisible” cut, Rossano is the celebrated maestro behind the iconic hairstyles of Kate Middleton, Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lawrence, just to name a few. Talk in the beauty space about his life-changing $1,500 was the impetus for extending my trip to Hong Kong for a few more hours. I was curious to know how this experience would differ from the other hair treatments and haircuts I’ve had in the past.

I’ve always believed in investing in a good haircut and reliable stylist. My philosophy has always been that it’s the high maintenance treatments that allow us to be low maintenance on the daily. As I sat in the chair of the hair spa’s salon manager, Luca Venica, we discussed the need for a haircut and color that required the least amount of styling or retouching. He shared, “At Rossano Ferretti, we follow the shape and movement of hair. We don't follow the trends. Instead, our goal is always to bring out that natural beauty of hair.”

Luca began by mixing colors for hair. “We source from only the best hair suppliers for our hair spas,” he stated. The dye concoction, which he skillfully brushed on the roots, had nary a trace of ammonia’s pungent scent. At Rossano Ferretti, hair is regarded as an extension of skin. “This is why we only use the highest quality, natural ingredients and products,” affirmed Luca. As the dye sat on the strands, a hair mask was also applied onto the ends. This unique process significantly cut down waiting time without compromising results.

After the color and treatment, Luca began to demonstrate the Ferretti Metodo Cut. “Now, it’s time to dance with hair,” he announced. Following the natural shape and nuanced movement of hair, Luca created a seamless terrace of layers. A simple blowout, one that I could easily do at-home, was supported by a few spritz of Volumising Spray at the roots and a tiny drop of Protect and Shine at the tips. I boarded the red eye flight feeling rested and energized by the wellness experiences that Asaya Hong Kong had to offer. Skin was smoother, more radiant, and evidently hydrated.
