Responsible travel
The leader in responsible, ethical small group adventures since 1989.
Why it matters
Our style of travel is better for more
Travel offers us all some amazing experiences, but what about the communities and people that we visit on the road? From the very beginning, responsible travel has been at the core of what we do.
Sustaining communities
We actively work with communities and a range of local partners to support the development of new experiences in destinations that otherwise wouldn’t see the benefits of tourism, offering travellers the opportunity to connect with the local people and make a positive impact.

Our climate commitment
We believe that it’s our responsibility to help preserve the planet for the next generation of travellers and the communities we visit. From planting the first travel-powered forest in Kenya to funding carbon-drawing wetland restoration, we’re doing our bit to respond to the current climate emergency.
Gender equality
Diversity and inclusion have always been at the forefront of everything we do. In 2020, we have committed to increasing employment opportunities for women in the travel industry, from expanding our number of female leaders to doubling the number of female trekking porters by globally by 2022.
We'll be there, like we've been there before
We've seen a lot of challenges in the world over the more than 30 years that we've been running small group tours; global recessions, natural disasters and political conflicts to name a few. But, as a travel community, we've always found a way to overcome these challenges, supporting those around us and coming out stronger on the other side.
Namaste Nepal campaign
In April 2015 Nepal suffered a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake. After a successful Intrepid Foundation Earthquake Appeal, we knew there was more we could do to help the Nepalese people. That’s why we launched the Namaste Nepal campaign, raising over $700,000 and committing to donate all profits from our 2015/2016 trekking seasons to four local organisations.
Supporting locals in Myanmar
Community-based tourism (CBT) means a more authentic experience for travellers and an opportunity for locals to join an upskilled workforce. We established our first Myanmar CBT village in a joint project with Action Aid Myanmar. The teams designed a lodge for travellers to stay in, identified tourism activities like hikes and cycle routes in the local area, and sourced and trained local guides.
Australian Bushfire Appeal
At the beginning of 2020, millions of hectares of Australian land were ravaged by bushfires. The Intrepid Foundation raised over AUD $690,000 for the Australian Red Cross Bushfire Emergency Appeal, supporting thousands across Australia displaced by the fires, offering emergency grants to affected families, and psychological trauma support, with Intrepid doubling donations dollar-for-dollar up to $200,000.
Find out more about us
Intrepid Travel was founded by two friends who believed travel could benefit travellers, and the communities they visit. This has grown into the world’s largest adventure travel company.
Why travel with us
It’s simple: ultimate itineraries, perfectly sized groups, legendary local leaders, more destinations and ways to see the world, and travel that makes a positive difference.
With great adventure comes great responsibility, which is why we give back to the local communities we visit and look after the environment by carbon offsetting our trips.
Local leaders
The best people to show you a destination are the ones that live there, which is why we work exclusively with local leaders who can help you uncover the secrets of their homes.
Our foundation
Since 2002, our not-for-profit has worked with local organisations around the world to raise more than AUD $14 million for over 130 partners in destinations we visit.
Industry recognition
We're honoured to receive awards from the travel and business communities, as the more others see the benefits of having a purpose beyond profit, the greater impact we can all have.

Some of the ways you can travel with Intrepid Tours
18 to 29s adventures.
A once-in-a-lifetime adventure is out there waiting for you.
Want to see the highlights but still have the freedom to explore your own way? Our range of 18 to 29s adventures includes all the best bits, but have plenty of free time built in. Whether you’re travelling solo or with friends, you’ll be part of a small group to share it all with, as well as a local leader who handles all the logistics for you. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time for adventure.
Active Adventure Tours & Holidays
While travel is about discovering new places, for us the best adventures are found outside the city limits.
We're talking places where cobbled laneways are replaced by vine-covered jungle paths, skyscrapers are dwarfed by soaring mountains, and the quickest way to get from A to B is a zip-line instead of a taxi. On our Active Adventures you can get a new perspective on familiar destinations – kayaking with river dolphins in Cambodia, white water rafting the Amazon, canyoning the caves of New Zealand and seeing the Amalfi coast from the seat of kayak. These are pulse-racing, hair-raising thrill rides for those who like their travel with a dash of the extraordinary. Saddle up and join the ride.
Small Ship Adventure Cruising
Forget shuffleboard and cabaret—adventure cruising is all about the destination.
Cruising is an adventure in itself, but the beauty of travelling on a small ship with less than 50 passengers means the real fun begins when we pull into port or drop anchor at an island. It means you'll get to know the locals, rather than outnumber them. You'll still be looked after by your crew and get to relax on the deck with a cold beer, but you'll also get to kayak along the rivers of Krka National Park, snorkel with giant Galapagos tortoises, or hike through Sicily's dramatic volcanic landscapes. It's about exploring where the big ships can't go so you can swim in hidden coves, buy fish at local markets to barbeque for dinner, and listen to live music in cobblestone laneways. This is cruising—Intrepid style.
Cycling Tours & Holidays
No big bus windows. No phone screen. No maps, walls or guidebooks. Just your wheels, the wind and the open road. That’s how we roll.
From pedalling through peaceful villages in Vietnam and Japan to cruising down epic, ever-changing landscapes in Jordan and Tanzania, our cycling tours allow you to really immerse yourself in a place, and not just travel through it. Powered by nothing but your legs (and maybe a slice of biscotti and a couple of extra-strong cafés au lait), there’s a nice simplicity to cycling as well as plenty of adventures waiting for you off the saddle. Intrepid style cycling isn’t the Tour de France – you don’t get prizes for coming first and the lycra bodysuits are definitely optional – but we promise it’s a totally unique way to experience the world.
Polar Cruises & Tours
A journey to the Arctic or Antarctic is unlike anything else on earth.
Regardless of whether you're visiting the southern or northern extremes of our planet, there's something about these white landscapes that captures the imaginations of even the most hardened travellers. Nothing will prepare for the peaceful remoteness that awaits as you cruise to the extremes of the earth and discover great white landscapes full of icy inlets and frozen coves. Experience the rush of setting foot on some of the world's most isolated terrain, witness brilliant natural phenomena and come to terms with the sheer size and scale of the globe's polar regions. An Arctic or Antarctic Cruise is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience you'll remember forever.
Family Adventure Holidays & Tours
Your sense of adventure doesn’t just disappear when you have kids, so why should your family holiday options be limited?
We’ve developed a better style of family travel - one that favours real-world experiences over the ones behind a screen. From kid-friendly hotels (swimming pool included) and travelling in a tuk-tuk through the streets of Bangkok to kicking a football with Maasai tribesmen and catching an overnight train in Egypt, journey through some incredible destinations with other like-minded families eager to make memories to last a lifetime. After all, who needs a ball pit and a buffet when you’ve got the whole world to play in?
Walking & Trekking Tours
Each journey may begin with a single step, but some require a few more steps than others.
Here’s the idea: we provide you with expert trail guides, accommodation, and porters (where necessary); you bring your legs and a sense of adventure. From the frosted peak of Kilimanjaro and Patagonia’s windswept trails to a more sedate stroll through the rice fields of Vietnam, there’s a calf-stretching trip to suit every level of fitness and expertise. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

Explore the narrow strip of South Island land sandwiched between the mountains and the Tasman Sea that’s home to some of the country’s most beautiful places. Millions of years of natural history are right in front of you in wild limestone rock formations, powerful glaciers, rushing rivers and surf pounded coast, while the much more recent stories of the gold and coal rush can be found in the heritage settlements and in the resolute spirit of the coasters. Take in highlights from Christchurch to Queenstown, Pancake Rocks to craft gin, kayaking to spa soaking. This is a coastal road trip to rival any other.

Premium New Zealand North Island. Jenny · Traveled March 2024. This tour is a great mix of natural wonders, breathtaking scenery and culture. Island life, caves, hobbiton, catamaran cruising, volcanic landscapes, the trip has a lovely mix. It was well organised with the right mix of activities. Grant our tour leader was excellent.
Cambodia. Cambodia is well-known for its epic array of glittering temples, and for good reason. When you're watching a sunrise over Angkor Wat, or wandering around the pink sandstone of Banteay Srei, it's not hard to see why. Cambodia's beauty and slower pace can make you feel as though you've stepped back in time.
