At Louis Vuitton Cruise 2024, a Celebration of the Life Aquatic

Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore served as site and inspiration for Nicolas Ghesquière’s first presentation in Italy.

Italy’s Lake Maggiore has always been the more low-key neighbor to the celebrity-filled Lake Como, just as beautiful, but less noisy, more understated, the coded luxury equivalent to Como’s logomania, perhaps. But this weekend, the storied Isola Bella, located in Lake Maggiore just south of the Swiss Alps, dipped its toe into the world of celebrities, high fashion, and flashing cameras, as it hosted Louis Vuitton’s 2024 cruise show. On Wednesday evening, Nicolas Ghesquière invited guests of the house to a presentation at the island’s palace, owned by the dynastic Borromeo family since the 16th century. The plan was for guests to watch as models stalked through the pebbled paths of its baroque gardens that Edith Wharton once compared to a Renaissance poem. Unfortunately, mother nature had other ideas, and downpours moved the presentation inside where it could be enjoyed without the threat of rain.

Ironically, much of Ghesquière’s collection was created to withstand the exact weather that plagued the presentation. Inspired by the show’s setting, the designer presented an array of aquatic looks, many rendered in waterproof neoprene. The models called to mind sea creatures emerging from Lake Maggiore, with pleated fins protruding from underarms and necks, and goggles ready for deep sea diving. Some showed off elaborate headpieces of feathers and King Triton crowns, while others donned their underwater finds with the help of jewel-decorated tops. Per the show notes, the offering’s aim is to “give rise to contemporary tales, populated by drifting creatures that abandon aquatic dwellings for the discovery of terrestrial wonders.”And indeed, one couldn’t help but consider Ariel and her six sisters as models in sheer dresses appeared on the runway to close out the show, their swinging skirts providing lightness to the collection.

Per usual, celebrity guests were in abundance, undeterred by the rain. After showing off many sustainable Louis Vuitton looks at Cannes last week, Cate Blanchett took the short flight over to Northern Italy and attended the show in a knee-length gray dress with a plunging neckline and a completely open back. She was joined by other Louis Vuitton ambassadors, including Alicia Vikander, Emma Stone, and Jennifer Connelly. The most unexpected guest, however, was Oprah, who arrived in a belted off-white shirt dress with matching pants, and posed for photos alongside Gayle King and Ava Duvernay.

A pre-taped video allowed those not in attendance to experience what could have been—a mythical fashion display among the historic Borromeo gardens—but the reality proved the collection is just as amphibious in nature to the creatures that inspired the clothing. They work by the water, on land, and upon many a future red carpet as well.

Nicolas Ghesquière Dives Deeper Into Mermaidcore For Louis Vuitton Cruise 2024

Darling it's better down where it's wetter....

Not a month after dropping a fast-paced Pre-Fall 2023 collection in Seoul , South Korea, Nicolas Ghesquière transports us to a whole new world with Louis Vuitton Cruise 2024 at Lake Maggiore in Italy. The excursion marks the French house’s first-ever show in its neighbouring nation—an apt choice given its newly appointed CEO, Pietro Beccari , is Italian.

The low-key neighbour of the star-studded Lake Como, Maggiore sits along the sprawling border of the Swiss Alps. But unlike the Amalfi’s vibrant coastline, Italy’s Northern lakes possess a more esoteric beauty. “There are beautiful places to go in Italy,” Ghesquière explained, “but the lakes are so mysterious.”

Though the show was set to take place amidst the gardens of Isola Bella, a tiny private island that has been owned by the Borromeo family for 500 years, the weather got in the way. Rain may have inhibited a sunset show and afterparty, but an earlier runway was staged for imagery while the LV team seamlessly pivoted to an indoor show that saw Catherine Deneuve , Oprah Winfrey , and Cate Blanchett , plus 1,000 or so other guests under one roof.

As the first few looks came down the makeshift runway, it was clear why Ghesquière chose a waterside venue. With gill ruffs, fin-like fluted hems, neoprene sets and water droplet embellishments, models appeared as water natives.

“We started with the idea that the girls were coming from the water, like mermaids of the lake, and they’re transforming into something else,” the creative director said of his inspiration.

But instead of the typical designs we see when referencing the fairytales of sirens, Ghesquière pushes the boundaries of our imagination, creating a world where creatures of the lagoon don’t hide in the weeds but stand formidably.

Further along, the undertones of sci-fi athleisure and overt aquatic motifs evolved. Hard fabrics conceded into intricate shapes, scales were arranged in floral patterns, and tailoring sharpened up. Shoes were either slouched boots or sporty sneakers, but the accessories that really stole our gaze came in the form of baroque headgear, each one custom-made for the show by a Roman atelier that creates for operas and films.

The result was a romantic journey where mermaids emerge from the lake, find their own way, and ultimately flourish—represented in the seven ethereal ruffled dresses that made up the closing looks. A mixture of silk, organza, and lace, the pastel-hued gowns were a striking departure from Ghesquière’s usual unisex approach to design. But where he made his touch known was in the sculptural shapes of these pieces, each one uniquely draped and taking life as the models walked for large- scale impact.

Louis Vuitton has staged a decade’s worth of Nicolas Ghesquière’s destination shows in architectural marvels the world over. This year, the designer chose the Hypostyle Room of Antoni Gaudi’s Park Güell, a roofed hall whose mosaic ceilings are a Gaudi signature. The Park Güell was conceived as planned community, but was canceled mid-construction by World War I and was christened a park instead, and has since become one of Barcelona’s main tourist attractions alongside the architect’s masterpiece the Sagrada Familia.

Park Güell’s phantasmagorical vibes are in keeping with the era-mashing, time-traveling codes that Ghesquière has established at Vuitton in his 10 years at the brand, but the location was a bit of a red herring. His new cruise collection was indebted to Gaudi only insofar as it was inspired by Spanish characters of all stripes. In a pre-show interview Ghesquière mentioned the great painters Velazquez, Goya, and Zurburan, the legendary filmmaker Luis Bunuel and the award-winning 2022 film by Rodrigo Sorogoyen As Bestas , as well as the upcoming America’s Cup in Barcelona, of which Vuitton is the main sponsor.

“I wanted to respect the place we are,” Ghesquière said. “I love that this country is evocating a certain groundedness and some rigor, and in the meantime it’s about freedom, it’s about youngness, it’s about an extravagance somehow.”

That push-pull played out in the collection, which began with a parade of tailored, mostly neutral looks, all worn with straw gaucho hats and mirrored racing shades. Ghesquière said that the first and third exits were modeled on the sailor’s traditional vareuse—note their wide collars—but their broad shoulders and upside-down triangle shapes borrowed equally from the 1980s silhouettes of his youth. “It’s quite dressed up, there’s nothing casual about it,” he said. By the end, though, the strictness of his jupe tailleurs and coat dresses was replaced by the voluptuous drape of silk skirts and trousers, their chiaroscuro folds of silk nodding in the direction of the Spanish masters he referred to. The ultramarine of a one-sleeved bubble dress was particularly gorgeous.

In between he proposed horsey touches like glossy riding boots and jodhpurs with deep faux fur cuffs, and riffed on polka dots and ruffles, though there was nothing so commonplace as a flamenco dress. No reference to Cristobal Balenciaga either. Though he was Spain’s greatest designer, and Ghesquière headed up the house for nearly a decade-and-a-half, he has closed that chapter. Instead, a deconstructed white lace skirt was reconstructed with wire hooks in the style, he said, of a fellow Spaniard designer Paco Rabanne. (Ghesquière’s friend Julien Dossena, who currently designs Rabanne, was in the audience alongside their mutual friend, designer Natacha Ramsay-Levi, and LV A-listers like Jennifer Connelly, Regina King, and Sophie Turner.) 

Other experiments, like the silk and wool dresses he dunked in boiling water, shrinking just the wool, owed less to the setting than they did to Ghesquière’s own process-oriented approach and preference for worked surfaces. One thing that Ghesquière and Gaudi share for certain is a flair for the audacious.

Choosing the Catalan capital for his new Cruise collection, Nicolas Ghesquière proposes a new take on Louis Vuitton’s inimitable travel style.  

For the first time ever, Park Güell, home of the architectural utopia created by Antoni Gaudí – completed in 1914 and now a public garden – welcomed a fashion show. The silhouettes gracefully took to the runway in the captivating Hypostyle Room, lit by set designer James Chinlund. Matched to the curved space, the flowing seating plan echoes the volumes of the collection. The influence of Spanish flamboyance meets the forward-facing vision of the Louis Vuitton Artistic Director. Traditional Andalusian sombreros cordobés straw hats have a lacquered finish. Sunglasses with a futuristic sporty inspiration mirror both iridescent low boots and the colorful mosaics of the setting. Nuances of black and luminous white create a chiaroscuro that infuses the collection.  

Travel style enriched with Spanish references redefines a multi-faceted feminine allure. Sophisticated tailoring and dazzling embroidered robes, graphic motifs and voluminous draping all shape a bold aesthetic. Amazonian-like models stride in riding boots and sculptural earrings. Their belted waists invite a casual stroll to breathe in the spirit of the times.

Jaden Smith's Bejeweled Shoulders Sparkle Alongside ‘Bridgerton' Alum Phoebe Dynevor at Louis Vuitton Women's Cruise 2025 Show in Barcelona

Jaden Smith joined a bevy of high-profile guests at the Louis Vuitton women's cruise 2025 show in Barcelona on Thursday. The recording artist sat in the front row at the event and posed for a photo alongside Nicolas Ghesquière, the women's creative director.

For the event, Smith opted for a monochrome look with jeweled embellishments designed by Ghesquière. The "Icon" rapper wore a coordinated pair of black trousers and formal dress shirt, which included bold, silver jeweled embellishments on the shoulders and on the bottom of the shirt.

"I just love how [Ghesquière's] kind of redefining what it means to wear formal clothing," Smith said of the designer's work. Last November, the French luxury fashion house extended its contract with Ghesquière for another five years.

Smith continued the monochrome approach to this look, completing the ensemble with a pair of black boots with subtle silver detailing. Accessories worn by the young star included layers of necklaces and metallic bracelets. During the show, Smith was seated in the front row alongside "Fair Play" actress and "Bridgerton" alum Phoebe Dynevor, who wore a checkered ensemble in black in mocha hues.

Smith also posed for a photo with Ghesquière, who debuted the women's cruise 2025 collection at Park Güell in Barcelona. "It's really some of the most beautiful architecture that I've ever seen," Smith said of the venue, designed by modernist architect Antoni Gaudí at the turn of the 20th century.

"Every time I go to Disneyland, I'm always like, why does the architecture outside Disneyland not look like this? And this is reminding me of, like, a Disneyland for adults," Smith added.

Smith has a strong relationship with the French luxury fashion house and is a regular fixture at Louis Vuitton events, some of which he's attended in the recent past. Prior to the showcase of the women's cruise 2025 collection, the recording artist attended a celebration for Louis Vuitton‘s spring 2024 men's capsule collection  by Tyler, the Creator last March. For the occasion, Smith fashioned a few pieces courtesy of Louis Vuitton, including two crossbody bags and a belt.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Louis Vuitton unveiled its latest fashion designs at Barcelona’s Park Güell on Thursday, providing the clothes with drama to finally match Antoni Gaudí’s architectural masterpiece.

Nicolas Ghesquiere’s ambitions for the Parisian house’s 2025 Cruise collection were unveiled before an A-list crowd, including actresses Ana de Armas, Jennifer Connelly and Saoirse Ronan.

Louis Vuitton usually unveils its ready-to-wear collections in the French capital, while choosing exotic and attention-grabbing locations for its destination cruise collections.

Where tourists tread daily in tank tops, shorts and flip flops, this UNESCO World Heritage Site for one night was home to cutting-edge garments that blended with its earthly tones that are at once organic and yet seemingly ethereal.

The models weaved their way through the 86 Doric columns that hold up a vaulted square in the center of the park that overlooks Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance.

The show notes said Ghesquiere had been inspired by Gaudí’s “legacy in constant mutation” and Spain’s rich artistic heritage.

“As if in homage to such opulent purity, the Maison’s rigorous spirit embraces the country’s passionate character,” the notes read. “The fervor of its colors, its loyalty to tradition elevated into artistic expression, dark and light that never appear contradictory.”

Dramatic silhouettes contrasted with the soft curves of Gaudí’s organic structures, which were then reflected in the dresses that draped and folded into volumes that defied gravity.

And then there were flashes that delighted: a pair of equestrian boots that finished in a bunch of tassels.

The fashion show, however, was not celebrated by all. A group of a few hundred residents protested the event for what they said were the inconveniences it had caused, including reduced parking in the area. The protest also included animal right activists.

The group of protesters located a few streets down the hill from the park’s outer wall could be heard beating drums, blowing air horns and setting off firecrackers before the show kicked off. Catalan police said they arrested one person for resisting violently to their decision to remove the protesters from a street to let traffic through.

Park Güell, pronounced “gu-ay” was started in 1900 as a planned upscale residential development designed by Gaudí, whose other works include the still-in-progress La Sagrada Familia Basilica. But a lack of buyers led to it being ditched in favor of a park that eventually passed into the hands of the Barcelona townhall.

It now receives 4.4 million visitors a year, mostly from the U.S., Britain, France, Germany and Italy, with Barcelona residents only representing 0.3% of the visitors, according to the park.
