Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

InterContinental Boston

Downtown and Waterfront Boston, Boston, Massachusetts, United States

  • Full Review
  • Huge, beautiful rooms
  • Enormous fitness center, pool, and spa
  • Two excellent on-site restaurants
  • Waterfront terrace
  • Daily fee for in-room Wi-Fi
  • Lacks distinctive Bostonian character
  • Some minor service issues
  • Spillover noise from lobby-level restaurants
  • Valet parking is pricey

Bottom Line

Palatial, contemporary, and elegant, the InterContinental offers huge, immaculate rooms and an array of decadent amenities (massage, pool, sushi, cocktails) in a scenic harborside location , but the service doesn't quite compare to that at Boston's best luxury hotels . They have a cle d'Or concierge team and a 24-hour fitness center. In the summer, they offer outside dining on the Miel Brasserie Terrace as well as the casual outside 510 on the Waterfront Bar. Summer Activations include art nights and complimentary fitness classes on the back lawn.

Oyster Hotel Review

Deluxe amenities (like the gorgeous spa), subtly elegant rooms, and adequate service makes the intercontinental a solid choice for big-box luxury..

intercontinental boston travel weekly

With nine floors and 424 rooms, the InterContinental Boston does swift business and appeals to a broad spectrum of travelers. During my stay, I witnessed families with kids enjoying the pool, a gaudily dressed wedding party making its way from the lobby to one of the banquet rooms, a knot of film crew regulars enjoying drinks at the Japanese fusion boite Sushi-Teq, and corporate types from the nearby business district three deep at the raucous cocktail lounge RumBa. There's no question this is a luxury property, but it manages to be grand without feeling pretentious.

The palatial property has been well-kept and looks and feels brand new, with a grand, sparkling marble lobby dotted with potted orchids and white roses, backlit displays of pottery, and seating alcoves lined with bookcases. Rooms are large, immaculate and contemporary, with comfortable pillow-top beds, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and huge marble bathrooms, but they lack modern electronics like iPod docks or DVD players. (Despite the website's advertisement of in-room sound systems, no such feature is currently present in standard rooms, and management couldn't confirm when these purported upgrades would take place.)

Superior amenities like the on-site InterContinental Spa and Health Club are impressive, but service seems out of step with the proffered image of luxury. Check-in is long and overly complicated; interactions with staffers can be cumbersome and unpolished. And there's a lack of unique, local character -- this could be an InterContinental anywhere.

Though located in the comparatively drab Financial District, the Langham bests the InterCon with its distinctive Bostonian charm and five-star service. The Boston Harbor Hotel , though slightly more expensive, boasts authentic New England character, Clef d'Or concierge service, and a four-star restaurant. And the more affordable Fairmont Battery Wharf offers comparable amenities and rooms with views that better exploit the waterfront address.

Plenty of service, but the basics are not well executed

intercontinental boston travel weekly

Uniformed porters and valets tripped over themselves to help me from my cab to the front desk, but the solicitous service ended there. The front desk was woefully understaffed and the receptionist slow and inefficient when I checked in, leaving an increasingly restless line of travelers rolling their eyes and tapping their toes. And when I inquired about nearby sightseeing attractions with the concierge, she couldn't get rid of me fast enough, handing me a map and offering a tight smile. A request to guest services that a pair of scissors be delivered to my room seemed to bewilder the attendant, though after speaking to three separate people and giving my word that I'd return the scissors after using them, I convinced someone to bring them to me.

  • 24-hour room service, delivered by tuxedoed waiters
  • Chauffeured luxury cars can be secured via the concierge for a minimum of two hours; Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac Escalades available for a steep price.
  • Free delivery of Wall Street Journal , USA Today , Boston Globe , New York Times or Financial Times
  • Same-day laundry and dry cleaning available
  • Turndown service available
  • Valet parking is pricey.

Prime downtown waterfront location within walking distance to Faneuil Hall and the Fort Point gallery district

The InterContinental is situated on prime waterfront real estate, looking out onto scenic Fort Point Channel, the site of the Boston Tea Party. The hotel shares the fairly sterile surrounding blocks with a smattering of skyscrapers and luxury condos, but is an easy walk to Faneuil Hall and downtown. The restaurants and galleries of Fort Point are a 10-minute walk across the Summer Street Bridge.

  • Five-minute walk to South Station, the largest train station and intercity bus terminal in Boston
  • 10- to 15-minute walk to Faneuil Hall, a historic marketplace and modern-day mall
  • Less than a mile, or about a 20-minute walk, to the 50-acre Boston Common, the country's oldest park and the start of Boston's 2.5-mile Freedom Trail
  • A few-minutes' drive to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox
  • Twenty-minute ride to Harvard Square on the T (Boston's subway)
  • About a 25-minute cab ride to Boston's Logan International Airport ; water taxis dock right outside the hotel's harborside to the airport

Huge, sleek, and immaculate

intercontinental boston travel weekly

Spacious standard rooms are among the biggest in downtown Boston, ranging from 420 to 480 square feet (significantly bigger than those at the Fairmont Battery Wharf or the Hilton Boston Financial District and marginally smaller than the Boston Harbor Hotel ). My Double Double Deluxe was clean and beautiful, with plush carpeting and furniture in muted neutral tones and a marbled entryway and bathroom. At check-in, the receptionist informed me that construction was underway next to the hotel and offered to put me in a room away from the noise. The room was indeed quiet, but unfortunately, the view was of a corporate office just across the way, so there was little natural light.

  • Large standard rooms range from 420 to 480 square feet.
  • Huge marble bathroom is spotless; equipped with deep tub, glassed-in stall shower with a detachable showerhead, Floris toiletries, monogrammed robes, a scale, and a telephone.
  • Pillow-top mattresses are swaddled in silky blankets and 300-plus-thread-count sheets -- but only two pillows to a bed.
  • Standard rooms contain either two double beds or one king bed for the same price; standards with harbor views are slightly more than city view.
  • 32-inch, flat-screen plasma TV
  • Each room is equipped with an iHome
  • Wi-Fi is not free.

Plenty of appealing amenities -- including a gorgeous spa and fitness facility

intercontinental boston travel weekly

The InterContinental offers all the features one might expect of a luxury hotel. The most alluring amenity is the 6,000-square-foot InterContinental Spa and Health Club, which encompasses a huge, 24-hour fitness center, indoor lap pool, locker rooms outfitted with a steam room, and six treatment rooms where guests can book an extensive array of spa services. Chilled water infused with citrus and melon is provided for guests using the fitness center.

  • Gym has five recumbent bikes, four elliptical machines, five treadmills, free weights, and half a dozen weight training machines, plus ample space for stretching.
  • 45-foot, heated indoor lap pool
  • Blond-wood-accented locker room features steam room.
  • Spa offers extensive menu of services; hotel guests are given priority booking and the $10 facility access fee is waived.
  • Penfields' gift shop and business center features two desktop computers with printers; courier service and mobile phone rental available
  • Pets under 35 pounds are allowed provided guests pay a one-time cleaning fee.
  • For an extra fee per night, guests can access the InterContinental Club Lounge, which offers perks like free breakfast and evening hors d'oeuvres, free Wi-Fi, and access to a DVD lending library.

A good pick for families

intercontinental boston travel weekly

Despite its soigné appearance and lack of an official kids' club, the InterContinental offers a lot for families. Large rooms, close proximity to the Boston Children's Museum, and a lap pool that's frequented by playful tykes, plus a relatively sophisticated kids' menu, make it an appealing choice for parents traveling with their brood.

  • Huge standard rooms start at 420 square feet; adjoining rooms available.
  • Heated indoor pool
  • Free cribs; rollaway beds are rather steep per night.
  • Refrigerators can be rented per night.
  • Miel's children's menu includes chicken fingers with frites, spaghetti Bolognese, and baby Kobe beef burgers
  • The Boston Children's Museum is just across Fort Point Channel.
  • 10-minute walk to the New England Aquarium
  • Water taxi docks in front of the hotel's harborside
  • Babysitting referrals can be arranged through the concierge.
  • DVD players and access to lending library are only available to InterContinental Club Lounge members.

Cleanliness

Fastidious housekeeping; super clean from top to bottom.

Seemingly every corner of this property is spotless and in excellent condition: The gleaming, high-ceilinged lobby -- which gets its share of foot traffic -- is immaculate, the gym and pool are spic and span, and the rooms are clean.

Allows small pets

Pets under 35 pounds are allowed provided guests pay a one-time cleaning fee. The entire 6th floor is allocated for guests with pets. Dog-walking services are available through the concierge.

All-Inclusive / Food

An array of tasty on-site restaurants.

intercontinental boston travel weekly

The lobby level features two full-service restaurants, Miel and Sushi-Teq, and one Caribbean-themed cocktail lounge, RumBa, all of which were packed to the gills on a recent Friday night. Be sure to make dinner reservations in advance if you're planning a weekend stay or you could be waiting an hour or more for a table.

  • Miel serves excellent Provencal food for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch; offers an outdoor terrace.
  • Popular, shoebox-size fusion spot Sushi-Teq serves sushi rolls and tequila-infused cocktails (including a delicious jalapeno margarita
  • RumBa cocktail lounge offers Caribbean-style drinks like the champagne mojito and a bar menu with small plates like pulled pork sliders
  • The Moulin-Rouge-themed Champagne Bar off the lobby is available for private parties.

Fun facts and finds from our hotel tour:

  • Being located on Boston Harbor comes with special perks, such as having a water taxi dock right outside of the hotel. Chef Concierge Rob Fournier says, "There's a couple different water taxi companies, but Red Top Boats - the guy that runs it is absolutely fantastic. He bends over backward for our guests. He will drop you off essentially anywhere within the harbor, whether you're going to Long Wharf or Liberty Wharf or to a restaurant. And if you're going to the airport, it's a really nice way to do it. It's about 10 to 15 minutes to the airport, and then you get on a shuttle bus to the terminal."

During the hotel's construction in 2006, architects and developers wanted to blend maritime history with modern design by creating the building to resemble a tall ship with the masts up. So when you look at the building straight on, you can see the masts, while the curved lines are the sails blowing in the wind. At the same time, the mirrored glass reflects the water, light and neighborhood, so it's become a part of Boston itself.

According to Fournier, a major selling point for the hotel is the proximity to so much open green space, not to mention the waterfront location. He told us, "The Greenway is special to have outside, and it's such a beautiful corridor as it links Chinatown, the Financial District and the North End. It's all connected, and it's such a vibrant area."

Sustainability is important to the hotel, as they know it is to their guests. Steam is used to heat the building, and they recently transitioned to full-sized bottles for their in-room amenities. Additionally, they provide refillable glass bottles and purified water for meetings and conferences.

Call it the anti-boutique hotel: the 424-room InterContinental, facing both the waterfront and the Rose Kennedy Greenway, consists of two opulent, 22-story towers wrapped in blue glass. Both luxurious and hospitable, guests looking to be close to the Financial District and Seaport neighborhood will be pleased with their short commute from the hotel.

Palatial, contemporary, and elegant, the InterContinental offers huge, immaculate rooms and an array of decadent amenities (massage, pool, sushi, cocktails) in a scenic harborside location...

The capital of Massachusetts and one of the oldest cities in the United States, Boston is a lively metropolis teeming with history, culture, and an array of activities to suit every taste. From its rich colonial heritage to its bustling modern cityscape, Boston offers a plethora of experiences for all types of visitors to enjoy. In this guide, we'll delve into the top attractions, some of the best restaurants, nearby cities worth exploring, and a few of the best hotels for you to rest and rejuvenate after long, adventure-filled days.

  • In a town of 50+ colleges, make it a point to get outside! Explore the oldest public park in America, the 50-acre Boston Common.
  • The city has deep Irish roots , so if you find yourself there around St. Patrick’s Day, be sure to celebrate at the many Irish pubs in the area and attend the annual parade.
  • Michelin doesn’t come to Boston, but that doesn’t mean the city doesn’t have top tier restaurants. Some of our favorites include Mariel, Uni, Mamma Maria, and No. 9 Park.

IHG Hotels in Boston

Voted one of the Top 10 Hotels in Boston by Condé Nast Traveler, the waterfront  InterContinental Boston  boasts elegant accommodations and breathtaking views of the city skyline and harbor. If you’re craving a luxurious hotel stay, this is the right choice, whether traveling to the city for business or pleasure. Guest rooms and suites have been recently redesigned and include floor to ceiling windows. The hotel is also home to  a spa, fitness center, and Club Lounge —and it’s walking distance to attractions like the Boston Tea Party & Ships Museum. Even if you don’t stay here, you can still book a day pass to enjoy the hotel’s amenities through ResortPass. This includes access to the pool and state-of-the-art health club.

Three miles from  Logan Airport  you’ll find  Hotel Indigo Boston Garden , which is also near North Station and  TD Garden . The renovated, pet-friendly guest rooms are spacious and bursting with New England charm and there’s a  24-hour gym on-site  for the busy traveler who wants to squeeze in a workout whenever possible. Explore historic sites nearby or get tickets to a sporting event; staying at this hotel is perfect for when you have a concert to go to or if you plan to visit places like the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere's house, and Boston Harbor. Grab a bite at the all-day  Blake's Kitchen + Bar  on the lobby level of the hotel. Here you can choose from shared plates like charcuterie, wings, or meatballs. There are also plenty of tasty paninis, sandwiches, and salads on the menu.

Just three miles from Boston, you’ll find the  Kimpton Marlowe Hotel  in the heart of Cambridge right on the Charles River. Renovated guest rooms have been designed for ultimate relaxation and feature locally-curated artwork and incredible views. The property was even voted one of the "Best Hotels in the USA, 2023" by U.S. News & World Report. Check out Celeste in the beautiful courtyard, a 25-foot-tall, moving Steampunk-style celestial sculpture made from gears, steel, and reclaimed metals. Personalized service and great food really makes this hotel a special place to stay, and it’s just a few minutes from Harvard Square and  MIT . Grab breakfast, weekend brunch, weekday lunch, dinner, or drinks at the globally-inspired  Bambara Kitchen and Bar , which has been in business for over 15 years.

Things to Do in Boston

Art Museums, Galleries, and More

Visit the  Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)  to explore over 450,000 works of art spanning ancient to contemporary periods, including masterpieces by artists like Van Gogh, Monet, and Rembrandt. Or experience the unique atmosphere of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, home to a stunning collection of art in a Venetian-inspired palace setting. Symphony Hall is also a Boston institution where concerts, festivals, and comedy shows take place on a regular basis.

Shopping Browse the shelves at  Beacon Hill Books & Cafe  on Charles Street for a wide selection of books and literary treasures. You can also make a reservation for Afternoon Tea and spend a fanciful Sunday eating and drinking in the cozy space. Other great shopping opportunities in the city include SoWa Vintage Market and the SoWa Farmers Market in the South End for unique finds and locally sourced goods.

Outdoor Activities Walk along the historic Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile path that takes you through 16 significant historical sites, including the  Massachusetts State House  and the  Paul Revere House  or enjoy the tranquility of  Boston Common and Public Garden —it’s perfect for a picnic, or a swan boat ride during warmer months. Catch a baseball game or take a guided tour of  Fenway Park , the iconic home of the Boston Red Sox. And don’t leave the city without paying a visit to the beautiful  Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University , which is the oldest public arboretum in North America.

Where to Eat and Drink in Boston

Nestled beside Faneuil Hall, the historic  Quincy Market  offers a sensory feast of local flavors. Indulge in the famed New England Clam Chowder served in a bread bowl while immersing yourself in the ambiance and people watching as you dine. Another fun food hall is  High Street Place , a dynamic destination offering a diverse array of dining options. From gourmet dishes to artisanal treats, this culinary hub promises to satisfy every palate and craving.

Step into the world of upscale Cuban cuisine at  Mariel , where exquisite dishes are complemented by stunning art. Savor the rich flavors of Havana amidst an atmosphere of elegance and creativity.

Dive into a unique dining experience at Yume Wo Katare, a counter service spot where slurping up tasty ramen comes with a twist. Share your dreams with fellow diners after finishing your plate, and be part of a memorable communal experience. The restaurant also hosts pop-up events from time to time.

Treat yourself to expertly crafted espresso martinis and intriguing cocktails at  Parla  in the Italian-American North End neighborhood. The speakeasy flirts with an element of surprise by allowing you to roll the die for a mystery cocktail, adding an extra thrill to your evening.

No. 9 Park  overlooks State house and Boston Common, but that’s not all that makes this James Beard-recognized restaurant special. Chef Barbara Lynch was included in Time’s "Top 100 Most Influential People of the Year" for her high-end French and Italian-inspired dishes that pair perfectly with Old World wines. Diners here notoriously order the prune-stuffed potato gnocchi with foie gras. No regrets.

Another fantastic Italian restaurant in the area is  Mamma Maria , which focuses on seasonal, local ingredients. The establishment is located inside a dreamy townhouse so you’ll feel right at home. If Japanese food is what you crave, take a trip to Uni, a 100-seat Izakaya with some of the best sushi, sashimi, and wagyu in Boston.

Intercontinental Boston Review

intercontinental boston travel weekly

If you have a stay in Boston planned, then I would definitely consider the Intercontinental Boston . I had an excellent stay. It’s a high quality hotel in a prime downtown location. The hotel is modern and right on the waterfront. It’s an excellent base, if you are visiting Boston. This review has tons of photos, and they all pop out into a slideshow. The below video covers some of the best things to do in Boston.

What I liked

intercontinental boston travel weekly

  • Excellent downtown location in the heart of the business district
  • Large rooms. Many with Harbour view
  • High quality breakfast with fresh fruits, cook to order options and buffet
  • Executive lounge offered premium alcohol during evening canapes
  • Hotel had spa and swimming pool

What could be improved

  • Not a ‘destination hotel’

The Booking

I booked 2 nights using the intercontinental ambassador free night certificate, and a further 2 nights using 140,000 IHG points. Intercontinental Ambassador is the membership scheme for Intercontinental Hotels. It costs $200 per year, and comes with the following benefits:

  • 1 Complimentary Weekend Night Certificate
  • Room upgrade
  • 4pm check out
  • $20 credit at Intercontinental Hotels
  • Platinum Status with IHG

The main benefit for most people is the Weekend Night Certificate. You pay for 1 weekend night and get a 2nd night free. I paid for 1 night in a room with club Intercontinental Benefits using my certificate for $548 and got a 2nd night for free. The Club Intercontinental rate provides access to the executive lounge, where breakfast and evening drinks/canapes are complimentary. As I was traveling with my wife and daughter, this represents pretty good value.

The location

intercontinental boston travel weekly

The hotel is located in a prime downtown waterfront location. 15 minutes taxi from the airport and right in the centre of the business district. Boston is pretty small, so the hotel is a good base for exploring all of Boston. The hotel is 2 minutes away from Boston Children’s museum , which is very good fun for under 10’s. My daughter had an amazing time there! We travelled around mainly using the subway, which is efficient and well priced. The downside is that they transport system is certainly dated, and due an upgrade! I spent one day In Harvard, and it took about 20 minutes to travel there via Subway.

intercontinental boston travel weekly

The Hotel is a 5* business hotel rather than a destination hotel. It is designed to be a luxury base for people to visit Boston, either for Business or as a tourist. When you return to the hotel, you can expect to find high quality accommodation, food and amenities. However, you would not want to spend an extended amount of time here, as there is not much to do. The lobby was grand and impressive, as you can see in the above slideshow. The hotel contained a spa on the 2nd floor. There was also a small pool – much appreciated, since many luxury hotels in this part of the world don’t have pools.

intercontinental boston travel weekly

As an IHG Platinum Ambassador, I was upgraded to a room overlooking Boston Harbour. I am a sucker for a good view, so I really appreciated this. However, Boston Harbour is not the most pretty, as you can see in the slideshow above. The room had the following features:

  • 2 double beds
  • Harbour View
  • Desk overlooking the Harbour
  • Keurig Coffee machine
  • Large bathroom with separate bath and shower

Overall, my impressions of the room were positive. It was large with a nice view, and the bathroom was spacious and impressive too. I took a few images, and you can check them out in the slideshow above.

The Executive Lounge. Breakfast

intercontinental boston travel weekly

The Club Intercontinental room allowed me to have breakfast in the Club lounge. The executive lounge was on the smallish side, but this was not a problem as it was never busy when I was there. I had breakfast with the club lounge for 2 days and enjoyed it. There were a range of options

  • Cook to order eggs
  • Cook to order pancakes
  • Fresh fruit. Excellent quality
  • Hot items. Bacon. Egg. Sausages. Bacon etc
  • Fresh yoghurt
  • Juices. Not freshly squeezed
  • Drip coffee
  • Separate coffee machine

I really enjoyed the breakfast. The fruit, nuts and yoghurt in particular we're very fresh and very high quality. I had the drip coffee and thought it was absolutely terrific - some of the nicest coffee I have had in a hotel. They also provided takeaway cups, which I though was a nice touch, and not very common in an executive lounge. I had the pancakes and found them to be very good. I also had the oatmeal on one day, which was thick and tasty

The Executive Lounge. Evening Canapes

intercontinental boston travel weekly

Evening Canapes are served in the lounge from 5pm to 7pm, and consisted of:

  • 2 hot snacks
  • Cold snacks. Potato chips and nuts

The food selection was very disappointing. Sometimes you can get something approaching your dinner in an executive lounge - but not here. Simply spring rolls and cheese sticks, i.e. readymade oven food. I can only assume that they serve bad food, as they want people to buy food at their restaurants. In reality, I think that the effect of this is that people wont view club rooms as good value for money. The extra cost of a club room was about $150.  The alcohol selection was pretty good. The spirits were premium, and included belvedere vodka and Johnny Walker Black Label. Both items retail for around $40.

I only use the pool and the locker rooms and I think both are great. I travel frequently and often swim at hotel pools when I'm on the road. The pool is well-maintained and one of the nicest indoor hotel pools that I've used. The locker room is relatively small, but the space is set up well. It's also really well-maintained, clean and well-stocked with anything a guest would need. My one suggestion would be to add a bathing suite dryer.
