Great Falls Voyagers ready for the upcoming baseball season

Baseball season is back and the Great Falls Voyagers are gearing up for another great season. There have been some big changes this year with only two returning players from last year, a new field manager, and new assistant coaches.

Players Xane Washington and Braden Forsyth are the only two players returning to the Voyagers this year, and they say the team is already connecting with each other both on and off the field.

“The vibes are good,” Washington says, “That's the biggest thing. I mean, it was kind of you never know what's going to happen when you have new players coming in. A lot of fun, a lot of personalities, a lot of cultures coming together on this one team. And I think we're going to mesh pretty well together and it'll be exciting. I'm just excited to be on the field, see these fans, hopefully give them a show every time we step on the field.”

Another returning player, pitcher Braden Forsyth, says “We’re going to be aggressive, we’ll be aggressive at the plate, so far off the mound we've been pretty aggressive, and we’re going to be a pretty aggressive staff so, should be good, aggressive group.”

The Great Falls Voyagers’ new Field Manager Sean Repay says his goal for the team is to foster a positive and pressure free environment while putting a focus on development.

Repay explains, “We want to treat this like an organization within Major League Baseball, even though we're not; you know, it's to have a certain level of patience with our players, to get them to understand that, failure is going to happen, have a little bit of more patience that normally indie ball wouldn't. We want to get guys ready to get out of here and go play. That's a goal for us. So anyway we could do that from a developmental standpoint and creating processes for them to get there is huge, you know. I’m very developmental driven. I hired, you know, two very much developmental driven coaches as assistants.”

The new players and staff are excited to show Great Falls their skills and to interact with the community. Repay says, “We want our guys to interact with fans as much as possible. I made that a message in the clubhouse as well, so I don't want fans out there to be afraid to come and approach our guys, whether it's to chat them up autographs, you know, please come, we're going be active in the community as well.”

The new players are also ready to get out on the field. Mahki Backstrom, who previously played for the Augusta Greenjackets, explains what he’s noticed so far his first year with the Voyagers, “A lot of electricity, a lot of fire, a group of guys that mesh. And most of all, it's just the team that wants to win. We don't want to sit here and be average. We're scared to be an average, we all have that same goal. We all have that drive to be better.”

The Voyager’s first home game will be against the Billings Mustangs on Tuesday, May 21st at 7pm, at 1015 25th Street North in Great Falls.

Voyagers Release 2022 Schedule

The Great Falls Voyagers have released their 2022 season schedule. The Voyagers will open the 2022 season with a three game series at home versus the newly relocated Northern Colorado Owlz. With a few new faces and most of last years team returning, the Voyagers are in prime position to make a run for a championship in 2022.

Yes, it's still professional baseball.

Pioneer League baseball fans in Missoula, Idaho Falls, Ogden, and Colorado Springs will be welcoming their local ballclubs back Saturday evening, a joy the remaining four Pioneer League clubs - including the Great Falls Voyagers - will enjoy this coming Wednesday.

For Saturday, however, the Voyagers are opening their first season in two years at Missoula's Allegiance Field at Ogren Park against the Paddleheads, the team formerly known as the Osprey.

Yes, friends, it's still the month of May, but the Voyagers and the remainder of the former Advanced Rookie League circuit have gone from affiliated baseball to independent ball as a partner league to Major League Baseball.

In fact, there is no Rookie League baseball at all, after MLB contracted 42 teams completely out of pro ball, leaving only 120 affiliated clubs spread between Triple-A, Double-A, full-season-A and short-season-A.

So, instead of the Chicago White Sox sending young ballplayers to Great Falls to season for the big leagues, Voyagers' manager Tommy Thompson hand-picked his 24-man roster, offering the players a shot at pro ball.

To some, it will be the last chance. And for others, it's their introduction to pro baseball. And for Thompson, his role is the same as when he last made a stopover in Great Falls back in 2016: molding 24 star-eyed hopefuls into MLB material.

"It looks like we have a very good, athletic group of guys, and the pitchers seem to have an idea of what they're doing," Thompson told the reporters during Media Day at Centene Stadium this past Tuesday.

Thompson has been in professional baseball as a manager/coach since 1988 and spent nine of the last 10 years in the White Sox organization - including his lone season as Voyagers' skipper in 2016, when his club was a league-best 47-28 during the regular campaign.

In short, Thompson has his connections when it comes to finding on-field talent: "I used some references, I trusted scouts, other coaches, people in other organizations," he said. "We've got some (Toronto) Blue Jay players, some Texas Ranger players, I used agents and scouts, and they referred guys (to me).

"I called and talked to them, so they were basically hand-picked. So if we don't do good, I guess it's on me ... you can blame it all on me; you can yell at me at third base and boo at me all you want!"

Scott Reasoner has been with the Voyagers' front office since 2011 and has been GM of the club since 2014, said there's going to be a lot of fun at the ballpark this year. With a 96-game schedule in the Pioneer League this season, 48 of those games will be at Centene Stadium.

"We couldn't be more excited," Reasoner said. "Tommy is already coaching the guys up.

"It's going to look a little different, but the play is going to be outstanding and exciting every night. I don't think many of these guys have ever seen snow before ... there's a lot of guys from Alabama on this roster!"

There are a couple of players with connections to big-name athletes. Outfielder Jason Nall's claim to fame is that he is the brother-in-law to retired MLB outfielder Coco Crisp.

"I went to a baseball scouting league camp in Florida," Nall, from Los Angeles, said. "I had a couple of good games, met some great people, and they gave me the shot to keep my dream going. I had to take the opportunity and run with it.

"I was planning on jumping into last year, but with COVID ... you know how that went. Was locked in the house, felt like a caged animal. I wanted to come here and make a difference."

Mike Howard also has a professional sports connection ... and even a musical connection: his uncle is none other than the late former heavyweight boxing champion, Joe Frazier.

The Bronx, N.Y. native said if it hadn't had been for Thompson, Howard would have still been in the Pioneer League.

"I was set to play in Ogden, but then Tommy offered me the opportunity to play here," Howard, a middle infielder, said. "Now I'm blessed to be here in Montana. It's an awesome place.

"I can't wait to be back here on the 26th and get it going!"

The Voyagers will have Ross Drishinski calling the play-by-play for each home game on FOX Sports Radio KXGF, AM-1400 and FM-98.3. 

The Voyagers open the new season with a three-game road swing to Missoula Saturday through Monday. After taking Tuesday off (every Tuesday is an off day in the Pioneer League), the Voyagers open a six-game homestand next Wednesday, May 26, against the Ogden Raptors at 7 p.m. at Centene Stadium.

Tommy Thompson returns to manage Great Falls Voyagers

GREAT FALLS — A new chapter in Great Falls Voyagers history starts this summer as the Pioneer League begins its time as an independent league. Luckily for the Voyagers, that new chapter will start with a familiar face.

The club announced on Wednesday that Tommy Thompson will return as manager after signing a three-year contract. Thompson previously managed the team in 2016, when he led them to a 47-28 regular-season record, the top in the league that year.

"I'm extremely excited, and so is my wife, on coming back to Great Falls," Thompson told MTN Sports via Zoom on Wednesday. "We had a tremendous time. The booster club, the fans, the ownership, the team was great. We had a real nice experience."

Thompson’s second stint in the Electric City won’t be without its challenges. Since the Pioneer League is now called an MLB Partner League and no longer affiliated with MLB, teams like Great Falls will largely have to build from scratch. Thompson will play a pivotal role in compiling rosters, but he has numerous connections in baseball after more than three decades in various roles with the Chicago White Sox organization.

"We're going to have to field our own players from released professional players, other independent players, or quality college players that didn't have a chance to get drafted or didn't get signed. So it's going to be a mix and match," he said.

Once the season starts, Voyager fans will once again get to enjoy Thompson for his fiery on-field personality and antics with umpires.

"Well, I'm going to have to work out a deal with (president Scott Reasoner) and (owner and CEO Vinney Purpura) to make sure they pay for my fines," Thompson joked. "If they do that, at times, I could be entertaining. But also I got to respect the game, you know what, I'm going to respect the players, I'm going to fight for them."

Great Falls will open its 96-game schedule on the road against the Missoula Paddleheads on May 22. The first home game is May 26 against the Ogden Raptors.

Wood was named Minor League Player of the Week in the International League after pulverizing balls to the tune of five home runs and 12 RBIs while going 10-for-22 in six games between May 6-12. Over his past seven games, MLB's No. 5 overall prospect is batting .462 with five dingers, 14 RBIs and a jaw-dropping 1.608 OPS.

"I think the big thing was just trying to be consistent," Wood said on MLB Network's Off Base to a panel that included Lauren Gardner, Xavier Scruggs and Ariel Epstein. "I think last year I had some good stretches and I had some not so good stretches, so I think the main goal this year was to get myself a plan so I could sustain that success for as long as possible."

The top Nationals prospect notched a pair of multihomer games last week -- bringing his tally to three on the season. He clubbed five jacks over three straight contests, hit safely in all six games of the week and set a new career-high with a six-RBI effort on May 11.

"I think just going to the field and trying to prepare myself the best I can each day," Wood told MLB Network. "Just getting with my coaches and getting good reports. And then just trying to carry that through to the game."

Over 38 games this season, the 2021 second-round Draft selection of the Padres (No. 62 overall) is slashing .356/.460/.582 with seven homers, 12 doubles, 35 runs scored, 29 walks and has gone 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts.

After Wood's two-tater game on May 8, Nationals manager Dave Martinez noted his impressive play but also mentioned that the organization wants to see more progress before considering a big league callup. Martinez cited more at-bats (Wood has 975 in four years as a pro), adjustments to better handle left-handers and improved baserunning as three items on the 21-year-old's to-do list.

The D.C. Metro native remains locked-in on what he can control.

"I just have a set of goals myself and I just focus on what I can do to achieve those goals that I set for myself," Wood said. "And I think that as long as I'm focused on those, then I think that it makes it a little tougher for the goals of other people to kind of sneak in."

Wood spent parts of his first two pro seasons in the Padres organization before being a centerpiece in the Juan Soto deal at the Trade Deadline in 2022. The IMG Academy product split time last season between High-A Wilmington and Double-A Harrisburg where he posted a .262/.353/.520 slash line with 26 long balls, eight triples, 28 doubles, 91 RBIs, 80 runs scored, 65 walks and 18 stolen bases over 129 combined games.

And although hailing from a family with basketball roots, Wood maintains that pursuing baseball was always the natural fit.

"It never really felt like a tough decision, I always felt like I love baseball more," said Wood, who acknowledged that he began to tailor his game after Curtis Granderson as he got older. "I feel like with baseball, whenever I was practicing, never really felt like a practice to me. I always enjoyed the work aspect of baseball."
