Swedish royalty in Australia: Crown Princess Victoria’s whirlwind tour down under
We were expecting their royal presence in 2020, but now almost three years later than scheduled, two senior members of the Swedish Royal Family finally touched down in Australia for a whirlwind tour.
Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel were in Australia for only two days, but made the most of their time by attending various events connected to defence, trade and sustainability, with the aim to strengthen ties between Australia and Sweden.
The future queen and her husband attended an indigenous smoking ceremony at the National Museum of Australia.
Victoria is often clouted as “the future Queen”, as she is the next in line to the throne, being the eldest child of King Carl Gustaf and wife Queen Sylvia.
It is not the first time Victoria has visited Australia in an official capacity – she was here in 2005 – but it is the first time she has visited with her husband, a former personal trainer who she wed in 2010.

The royal tour itinerary
Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were wowed by the natural beauty at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney.
On Monday February 13th, they attended a welcome ceremony at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.
They then visited the Namadgi National Park to learn about the effects of the 2020 bushfires as well as a koala rehabilitation centre.
On Tuesday the royal couple travelled Sydney, ending their day at a reception hosted by the NSW Governor.
Wednesday saw the Prince and Princess tour the Sydney Opera House as a means of highlighting the Swedish company Höganäs’ contribution to the building’s famous roof.
They also visited the Royal Botanic Gardens, St Vincent’s Hospital and meet with Australian women’s football team the Matildas and its Swedish coach, Tony Gustafsso.
The couple then departed for New Zealand on Thursday February 16th where they will remain for a handful of days before returning to Sweden for King Gustaf’s heart surgery on February 20.
He is expected to take two weeks off from his official duties to recover.
It is expected that the Crown Princess will act as regent during this time given she is next in line for the Swedish throne.

Swedish royals marvel at Australia's vastness and resilience as they visit Canberra
The Swedish royals showed they could be formal or laidback in the national capital on Monday, spending their first day in Canberra covering everything from a tour of the National Museum to a casual lunch at the picnic tables of the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve playground to a dinner on Monday night at Government House in Yarralumla.

They also got to meet the koalas in the sanctuary at Tidbinbilla, now thriving 20 years on from the firestorm which killed all of the koala population except for one - who was named Lucky.
The royal couple started their three-day tour of Australia in Canberra, their visit continuing on Tuesday at the arboretum, Australian National University and Parliament House, before they head to Sydney.
It is the first visit to Canberra for Crown Princess Victoria, who is the heir to the Swedish throne.
At the National Museum, Princess Victoria, 45, accepted flowers from Bonnie Heap, two, of Ngunnawal, amidst the scrum of local media as well as three photographers and three journalists from Sweden.
"We couldn't resist coming to see a real princess," Bonnie's mum Elyse said.
The visit to the museum included a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country conducted by Paul House and a tour of the museum's Great Southern Land environmental gallery, which explores First Nations' connection to the continent over more than 65,000 years.
The royal couple met the museum's Indigenous Reference Group including chair and council member Fiona Jose and other Indigenous leaders such as Professor Peter Yu.
Princess Victoria chatted with interest about the artefacts and displays, but also showed a more laidback style, joking as the smoke from the smoking ceremony drifted away from her ("Yeah, yeah that's a good direction") and, when confronted with a model of a large crocodile, zipped quickly across the room ("I think I'll go over here").
The royals headed out to Tidbinbilla for the afternoon on Monday to meet emergency services personnel and visit the koala sanctuary. They rode to the nature reserve in a Volvo electric bus, their tour of Australia about promoting sustainability as much as relations between the two countries.
At Tidbinbilla, Princess Victoria spoke to ACT Rural Fire Service chief officer Rohan Scott about the impact of the 2003 Canberra firestorm on the nature reserve and the adjacent Namadgi National Park and the area's recovery over two decades. She said the landscape was beautiful - and vast compared to home.
"It's so difficult to grasp the size of everything here. It's just enormous," she said.
The royal couple were also presented with a book - Ablaze. The long, hot summer of 2019-20 - which was compiled by members of the ACT Volunteer Brigades Association.
The Crown Princess was stunned to hear the fire fight that spring and summer lasted six months, across many different blazes, up and down the eastern seaboard. Both she and her husband were moved by images in the book, taken by volunteer firefighters attending those fires.
They also spoke with Tidbinbilla Rural Fire Service volunteers Ross Turton and Sue Sayer and then sat with everyone else at the tables next to the Tidbinbilla playground, eating a lunch of sandwiches and maybe a sneaky Monte Carlo biscuit or two. And the princess hopped in a fire truck, her husband taking a photo for their two children back home.
Johan Forssell, the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, is accompanying the royal couple.
He and the royals will meet with Australian ministers at Parliament House on Tuesday, with subjects likely to be covered including electrification, mining, healthcare and innovation.
On Tuesday, the royal couple will also plant a tree at the arboretum and Princess Victoria will speak at a seminar about electrification at the Australian National University.

'I've never had such a personal encounter with a royal on tour than with Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria in Sydney'
By Natalie Oliveri | 2 years ago
OPINION -- If I wanted to reach out and hug Sweden's future Queen during her recent visit to the Sydney Opera House, it could have easily been done.
Rather than being surrounded by a ring of stony-faced and towering bodyguards, Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel had a relatively low-key security detail while in Sydney on Wednesday .
And the access I had covering the visit was unprecedented compared to anything I had experienced on previous royal tours.
READ MORE: Sweden's Crown Princess speaks exclusively to 9Honey in Sydney
It was a refreshing and eye-opening look into the relaxed, but still incredibly regal and somewhat formal, nature of Europe's royalty.
It could not have been more different to the last royal tour to hit Australia, that of Prince Harry and Meghan in October 2018.
The biggest difference was how the royals treated the media pack there to cover the visit.
Instead of Prince Harry's fierce disdain for the journalists simply there to do their job, Crown Princess Victoria, 45, and Prince Daniel, 49, appeared more than happy to be shadowed by the press pack.
Even when that meant getting incredibly close with our cameras and microphones as they were taken on a tour of the Opera House, their every move followed closely by the media.
The Crown Princess was keenly aware of the constant gaze of the cameras – she was 'on' the whole time and did not let her polite smile slip at all.
She even appeared genuinely interested in what she was being shown, much of it happening in the hot Australian sun.

Climbing the countless steps in towering Gianvito Rossi heels, Crown Princess Victoria took the event in her stride.
Prince Daniel wore sunglasses while being shown the Swedish-made tiles that cover the iconic building's roof, most likely feeling the searing heat in his dark suit.
But they were gracious the entire time.
The Crown Princess even gave a brief interview as we were ending the tour, turning towards me as I followed closely behind.
She was smiling and acutely aware of my camera and microphone so I took the opportunity, even though speaking directly to royals is usually not encouraged at such events unless they instigate the conversation.
Well, a smile from the Crown Princess was as good an invitation as any.
And I was in luck as the only Australian journalist who was able to speak with her on Wednesday, not just once but three times.
Watch the videos above.
At Their Royal Highness' second event for the day, at the Royal Botanic Garden, I once again spoke with Crown Princess Victoria, this time on the more sombre subject of her father the King's impending back surgery next week.
Rather than brushing the question off and refusing to answer, she politely thanked me for asking and appeared touched, if not surprised, I knew what was going on.
The Swedish royals are certainly not as popular in Australia, or as well known, as their British counterparts.
That could also explain the more relaxed atmosphere surrounding their visit.

There were no mass crowds or long rows of barricades as seen when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex came to the same location on the first day of their Australian tour, one day after announcing Meghan was expecting their first child.
Then, and at most other royal engagements either on tour or in the UK, media are put into fixed positions usually behind a barricade and told to stay put until the royals pass by.
Most times the royals will simply ignore the cameras and meet the crowds who've waited to see them.
Only one or two members of the media, usually a photographer, television camera and a reporter, shadow the royals for the whole of their 'walkabout'.
Some royals, such as King Charles and Camilla, have become known for acknowledging the journalists and photographers here and there, even having a joke or two – something that has endeared them to the media.
But for Prince Harry and Meghan, and even Prince William and Catherine, they largely ignore the press pack.
During the Sussexes' royal tour, journalists were kept at a distance. Prince Harry even had a rather rude encounter with the small group of media who travelled with the royal party on board the official plane.
During the flight from Tonga to Sydney, at the end of the tour, Prince Harry told the reporters: "Thanks for coming... Even though you weren't invited".
The Times correspondent Valentine Low recalled that incident in his book Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown.
He described Harry as looking like a "sulky teenager" while "Meghan stood behind him, smiling benignly".
"Her only contribution was a comment about how much everyone must be looking forward to Sunday lunch at home," Low wrote.
"Harry sounded rushed, as if he couldn't wait to get back into the first-class cabin."
Harry's comment about journalists not being invited, while rude, is also incorrect as media are invited to cover such events.
As we now know, tensions between Prince Harry and Meghan and their staff were high during that tour.
Low claims the couple had become obsessed with Googling themselves every night of the tour, taking issue with some of the less favourable coverage.
The most touching moment for me of that tour was when Prince Harry and Meghan actually smiled and waved, and said goodbye, to me and a few of the media who had stuck around to the very end as they carried out their final engagement in New Zealand before flying home to London.
The European royals are not hounded as much as some within the British monarchy, so perhaps that explains their more relaxed approach.
They are often seen going about their business at home without too much press intrusion or bother from their subjects.
While Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel did have stern-looking security close by in Sydney, including members of the Australian Federal Police, they allowed the media to cover the visit from a close, but respectful, distance.
Just how close we got still amazes me.
It was a treat to be that near, to not only hear the Crown Princess speaking fluent English and her observations of Australia, but to see the detail of her flawless skin, sparkling jewellery and immaculately-fitted clothing was a rare experience.
And when Crown Princess Mary of Denmark was here for her last official visit in 2013 , she took the time to acknowledge the media in Sydney, clearly not forgetting the laidback attitude of her former Aussies.
READ MORE: Why Crown Princess Mary won't have a coronation
In one particularly memorable moment from her first tour in 2005, while at Bondi Beach, a local journalist was speaking into the camera when Crown Princess Mary popped over her shoulder and said 'hi'.
Much like Crown Princess Mary in Denmark, Crown Princess Victoria is adored by her subjects.
She is consistently voted the most popular member of Sweden's royal family and having witnessed her warmth and professionalism in Sydney, I can see why the people adore her.
One of the female journalists from Sweden, who was part of the royal party's travelling media pack, spoke highly of the Crown Princess when I enquired about her before their arrival at the Opera House.
I was told Crown Princess Victoria was friendly and approachable and she very much lived up to that description.
With rumours the Prince and Princess of Wales might be heading Down Under later this year, and King Charles and Camilla expected to follow in 2024, the British royals might do well to look to the Europeans for how to boost their approval ratings.
To Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, well done. Australia would be more than happy to host another visit from Sweden's future Queen and King.

Swedish Crown Princess Couple complete successful Australian tour
Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden have completed a successful Australian tour to promote and strengthen relations between Australia and Sweden.
Their trip down under began on 13 February in the country’s capital of Canberra.
Prime Minister Johan Forssell joined the couple on the trip Down Under, and they began their visit to the Swedish embassy to meet staff members and learn about issues in the country.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel then met members of the indigenous population – the Ngunnawal – during a welcome ceremony featuring the traditional smoking ceremony outside the National Museum of Australia. While inside the museum, they viewed the Great Southern Land exhibition and held a meeting with representatives from the Ngunnawal.
Australia has been ravaged by fires in recent years, and the Crown Princess Couple took the opportunity to visit the Namadgi National Park, where they learned about the forest fires that destroyed 80% of the park in 2020. They also had a chance to see a rehabilitation centre for koalas. That evening, Governor-General General David Hurley gave a dinner for the royals and held a meeting with the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel.

On 14 February, the Crown Princess took part in a tree planting in the national arboretum before she spoke at a climate meeting at Australian National University. She said, in part, “Climate change affects the planet itself, as well as all of us who live here – humans and animals alike … Climate change is real, and it impacts us all. Here and now. So, here and now is a good place and time for a deliberation about things that can be done to mitigate the situation.”
A visit to Parliament concluded Valentine’s Day for the couple before they moved on to Sydney.
The royals and Prime Minister met New South Wales State Governor Margret Beazley at Government House. A reception was then hosted by the Governor for the Australian government and representatives of Australian and Swedish businesses.
The final day Down Under saw Their Royal Highnesses attend a seminar organised by Business Sweden; they also participated in the Sweden-Australia Sustainable Mining Summit.
They later got a tour of the famous Sydney Opera House before getting on board the HMAS Adelaide while visiting the naval base HMAS Kuttabul to learn more about maritime and regional security.
The royals and the Prime Minister also visited the Sydney Botanic Garden and Saint Vincent’s Hospital, the latter of which was to focus on cooperation between Australia and Sweden in the health sector.
Victoria and Daniel later met Australia’s national football team captain Tony Gustafsson and other players; Australia will host the FIFA World Cup later this year.
A visit Down Under wouldn’t be complete without meeting Swedes residing in Australia. The Crown Princess thanked the Swedes in Australia for promoting Sweden by saying: “Your commitment to business, to culture and to association life creates important impressions that make you proud to be a Swede.”
Their Royal Highnesses will now travel to New Zealand for part two of their international tour.

New details of King Charles and Queen Camilla's visit to Sydney and Canberra next month revealed

King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Parliament House, the war memorial, the CSIRO, and botanical gardens in Canberra, as well as the Opera House and harbour in Sydney during their brief trip to Australia next month.
It will be the first time since 2011 that a reigning monarch has visited the country.
What's next?
The royal visit will last five days, starting from October 18.
Buckingham Palace has released new details of King Charles and Queen Camilla's first visit to Australia since taking the throne.
The visit, scheduled for next month, will be a slimmed-down, five-day affair, taking into account the king's ongoing health concerns.
It will be the first time in more than a decade that a reigning monarch has touched down on Australian shores, after Queen Elizabeth II's last tour in 2011.
The highly anticipated visit will see the king and queen in Canberra and Sydney from October 18 to 23. The itinerary will focus on causes of particular interest to them.
Events at Parliament House in Canberra and on Sydney Harbour headline the tour, six years after the couple's last trip down under.
The prime minister will host a reception for Charles and Camilla on Capital Hill, with Australian political and community leaders before they take part in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

Charles's longstanding passion for the environment and climate change will be marked with a tour of the National Botanic Gardens on Black Mountain, and a meeting with scientists at the CSIRO researching the impact of bushfires and the resilience of the environment to bounce back from devastation.
Camilla will meet family and domestic violence advocates and representatives from the organisation GIVIT, which helps distribute donations across a range of charities.
In Sydney, the Royal Australian Navy will be on display during a fleet review on Sydney Harbour, where the king and queen will also attend a community barbecue.
Australians of the Year Georgina Long and Richard Scolyer will meet the king to discuss their world-leading research on cancer treatments before Charles sits down with Indigenous representatives to learn about Australia's First Nations culture and community.
Meanwhile, the queen will visit a Sydney library.
Tour going ahead despite king's health issues
Planning for the visit has been underway since at least the start of the year, but it was thrown into doubt after the palace revealed Charles had been diagnosed with cancer in February, forcing him to step back from public-facing duties.
He returned to public engagements in April , despite the need for ongoing treatment.
The cancer was discovered while he was being treated for an enlarged prostate.
Since then, the palace has remained vague about his diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, but it has confirmed that the king does not have prostate cancer.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement that he was pleased the king was recovering well and that he had "made visiting Australia once again a priority".
"The royal visit is an opportunity to showcase the best of Australia — our rich culture, our sense of community, and contributions to science, research and global progress," he said.
"His majesty first visited Australia in 1966 and has a strong personal affection for our nation."
Charles has already travelled to Australia 15 times in an official capacity, most recently in 2018 to open the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and spend time in the Northern Territory.
Charles and Camilla's tour of Australia coincides with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which is being held in the Samoan capital Apia that same week.

Danish King Frederik and his Australian-born wife visit Sweden on their first official trip abroad
Denmark sweden royals.
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark’s King Frederik X arrived in Stockholm on Monday with his Australian-born wife Queen Mary, as they begin their first official visit abroad as new Danish monarchs.
The 55-year-old Frederik was proclaimed king on Jan. 14 after his 83-year-old mother, Queen Margrethe II, who was Europe's longest-reigning monarch, abdicated.
In the Swedish capital, Frederik and Mary were first greeted by Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel, who boarded the Danish royal yacht Dannebrog.
They then took the gilded Swedish Royal Barge to shore and were welcomed there by King Carl XVI Gustaf, Sweden's longest-reigning monarch, and German-Brazilian-born Queen Silvia.
The welcome also included a cannon salute and music by Sweden's Royal Guards, lined up on the quay at the foot of the Swedish royal palace.
Relations between the two royal houses are close. Frederik’s grandmother, Queen Ingrid who died in 2000, was a Swedish princess.
The May 6-7 visit includes meetings with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kirstersson and the speaker of the Swedish Parliament. A visit to a military facility is also scheduled.
Danish government members also accompanied the royals, among them Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
Danish monarchs, whose roles are ceremonial, traditionally travel to other Scandinavian countries first. Although Frederik had a solo visit to Poland in January , it was planned before his mother's surprise New Year's Eve abdication.
Later this month, Frederik and Mary will travel to Oslo, where they will be greeted by King Harald V and Queen Sonja.
Frederik's mother was t he first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years, causing the Nordic nation to experience its first royal succession in more than a half century.
Denmark’s monarchy traces its origins to 10th century Viking king Gorm the Old, making it the oldest in Europe and one of the oldest in the world.

Discord launches end-to-end encrypted voice and video chats
Discord, one of the largest group chat apps in the world, announced on Tuesday that audio and video calls inside the platform will now be end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), meaning even Discord won’t know what users in those conversations talk about. In the last 10 years, end-to-end encrypted chat went from being a rare exception — think Skype in the mid-2000s — to a technology used by the world’s most popular chat apps, such as iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, and Facebook Messenger, among others. Discord was born as a group chat platform for gamers, with an emphasis on audio calls for users playing online games together, but also became popular with people who simply want a place where a large number of people can interact.
