  • Meet with real Goa while cycling – A cycling expedition can be a favorite activity for scores of Goa visitors, so be ready to ride it on the ‘not anymore wet’ streets of Goan towns and cities. Reaching the interiors of Goa will make you met with the authentic Goan lifestyle.

goa in october 14

What must be in your bags while arriving at this pristine beach land?

As it has been told that monsoon and summers are over but still you must fit some essentials in your luggage like,

  • Carry an umbrella and raincoats for sudden sharp showers in Goa.
  • Have a good pair of trekking shoes if you plan to trek here.
  • Keep good pair of slippers as well so you can roam comfortably on the beaches.
  • Do not forget to keep sunscreen or a sun protection lotion as bright and sunny days are back in October.
  • Keep at least two or three dosages of prescribed medicine for tackling mild fever, cough and cold.

Why do tourists avoid exploring Goa even after such lucrative traits of this October month?

Some drawbacks of October month stop foreigners and other native visitors from planning a Goa Trip in October month.

  • Goa does not become fully operational in October month. South Goa still feels deserted. So you should check before booking any place in South Goa for accommodation and enjoyment.
  • Chances of Rain create chances of spoiling your fun-packed plans this month. Though there is only a 3% probability of sharp showers, people do not want to take risk of getting drenched.
  • The temperature of Goa in October is slightly higher than the previous month due to the absence of monsoon winds and rain showers. People can feel the scorching heat on the beaches at the start of October month.
  • Swimming in the sea is allowed at only a few beaches because lifeguards are available from November to February. You should also check the status of swimming permission before finalizing accommodation near the beach area.

Where to stay during Goa Trip?

Due to the low arrival of visitors in October month, you can see some tempting discounts on booking accommodations, restaurants and party places. But it will not be that much lower like summer and monsoon season rates. Flight tickets can also impact your pockets.

But another aspect can please you during the October month Goa vacation which is fully staffed places of stay and enjoyment with less rush. The service providers can give full attention to their limited guests.

goa in october 15

You can book luxury and spacious rooms in Hotels, Resorts and Villas. For enjoying a private vacation you should pick the Private Villa booking option as it will offer you a private space equipped with modern services like a pool area, modern kitchen, balcony, music player, DVD player, coffee maker many more.

The hostels and home stays which were less operational in summer and monsoon season start hiring workers again in October month. Solo travelers and college students can book an economical hostel room or homestay for their stay during the Goa vacation.

A few things you should consider before finalizing the accommodation are,

  • Check the distance between the stay place and visiting locations.
  • Discounts and great deals before paying for them.
  • Prefer offline booking over online.

Goa in October

The guide for visiting goa in october.

by Niladri Bose

Goa in October is sure to thrill you. In fact, October is one of the best months to visit Goa. The long Indian summer and the wet rainy season is gone. It is not hot, not too humid or wet – just the right kind of weather for a fantastic vacation. The peak winter season is still a while away, so there are few tourists. The average temperature ranges between 31.6°C and 23.8°C, making it pleasant. The last week is the best time to visit Goa. There will be 9 hours of sunshine in a day. There is just 5 inches of rainfall, considerably less than September.

The beach shacks are beginning to open again after the long hiatus. Most of them close down as the peak summer sets is. There is little rain this time of the year. Only a 3% chance of heavy rain! The Anjuna Flea Market is also open and booming. The water sports activity has picked up too.

Visiting Goa in October is like going back to the old days, to the time when the first tourists began to arrive. So in October, you can see and feel the real Goa, like what it used to be. There were no charter flights back then, no train full of passengers, and no road packed with buses and cars taking people to the beaches. With so few people around, Goa was clean, green, the beaches were empty, and you had nature all around.

The high season won’t start before the middle of November . You can still get very good bargain prices because there are just a handful of tourists. October is also the mackerel season in Goa, so if you love seafood, come to Goa this time of the year. You will love it.

Goa October Checklist

There is little rain in October. But you should still carry the umbrella for those sudden, sharp showers. Get a good shoe if you plan to do trekking, and comfortable slippers for those long walks on the beach. Carry your sunscreen because the sun is out once again. The monsoon clouds are gone now.

Hotels in Goa in October

Goa Tourism has been trying to extend the holiday season for some time with some success. As a result, there are more tourists now in months such as October, which is just before the peak season starts. But there are still fewer tourists than the peak season of November-January. So there is a chance that you can get discounts, but the room prices won’t be as low as the summer or the monsoon months. Flight tickets and car/bike rentals will cost more too compared to September.

Many properties that work with only a few staff members are beginning to hire again, so the service will be better in October. Some guest houses and home stays close down for the summer and monsoon. They are starting to open up as well.

Rent a Villa in Goa

October is one of the best months to visit Goa . There is little rain. The humidity is low. Pleasant weather, not too hot! The water sports activities are beginning to open up. Book a luxury villa to make the most of your vacation in Goa this month. The prices are still lower than the peak season, so you will be able to save money or upgrade to a better property at the same price.

There is activity in South Goa again after the hiatus of the summer and monsoon months. Select a luxury apartment, premium house, or private villa with swimming pool in the South or in North Goa, close to the major beaches. We have many villas throughout the state. Many of our villas are right on the beach, on the waterfront, or are located in a nice lane, away from the crowds. Enjoy your privacy, as there will be no other guests at the villa during your stay. The luxuries and amenities offered are comparable to star hotels.

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Goa & Rainy Season (2024/2025)

Goa is a popular beach destination in India. As it is affected by the monsoon from June to October, the best times to visit Goa are from November to April with less rain and better weather.

The Best Times to Visit Goa

The worst time to visit goa, monthly weather in goa, monsoon season in goa (june to october), dry season in goa (november to february), hot season in goa (march to may).

While the best times to visit Goa are from November to April weatherwise, this can depend on your Goa holiday purposes, budget, and weather preferences.

For the finest weather conditions , sightseeing experiences, and water activity conditions, December to February is the best period. You can expect a prefect beach time with sunny, dry, and warm weather.

For the best times to visit Goa for your honeymoon or family trip , consider November to early December and March to April. These are times with relatively few tourists and good weather. Of course, December to February is also a great time if you don't mind crowds.

You can expect lower prices from May to October, which is the rainy season, with 30–50% off offered by many hotels and flights.

If you are thinking about an India trip, just contact us and we would be glad to share advice on the perfect timings and activities for you.

For a good travel experience, June to August is best avoided, as these months see extremely heavy rain (0.5–1 meters of rain per month!) with less than 4 hours of sunshine per day and averaging 20 rainy days each month. Torrential rain storms are accompanied by strong winds.

Many attractions like national parks and restaurants will close during this period.

If you want a favorable price and don't want to be affected so much by the rains, you may consider traveling in May, September, and October, which are at the transition months of the monsoon with only moderate to high rainfall and around 10 days of rain per month.

Frequent showers and occasional hurricanes hit Goa during its monsoon season. June to August suffer huge quantities rainfall, and June/July is the peak.

The abundant rainfall makes the Dudhsagar Waterfalls flow at their most spectacular. In June, there will be one of the important festivals in Goa — Sao Joao Festival. People jump into streams, wells, and ponds, which signifies the happiness of St John the Baptist when Jesus was born, and they pray for a good monsoon and harvest.

The rainy season in Goa might discourage some people from going on holiday there, but during this period, Goa is relatively cool at 29°C (84°F) compared to the 35°C (95°F) temperatures in other parts of India, so many locals choose to escape the heat there.

Lower prices, few tourists, and lush shades of green are the advantages of traveling in Goa in the monsoon if you don't mind the disruption of your plans by storms. What you should note is that on heavy rainy days with strong winds, some attractions and restaurants close.

Goa's dry season features comfortable summer temperatures and clear, sunny weather. It is the best time of the year to visit Goa.

The perfect weather is suitable to for all kinds of sightseeing and activities, like swimming, snorkeling, hiking, photography, and more.

In Christmas and New Year, Goa will be embraced by a strong festival atmosphere. The sound of carols echoes from the walls of the churches. Parties on the beach and bars, music, and fireworks are also indispensable elements of the celebrations.

Accordingly, the perfect weather brings a rise in prices. Accommodation is in high demand, especially from late December to February. If you are planning a trip in this peak season, it is better to book one or two months in advance.

Get some inspiration about  How to Plan an Affordable Luxury Trip to India .

In Goa's hot season, you can expect less crowding than during the dry season and rainless weather until late May. This is also a good time to visit Goa, especially between March and April.

Most of the time is suitable for water activities, sunbathing, and sightseeing. At the end of May there is some monsoon influence, but not much.

One of Goa's biggest festivals, Shigmo Festival (Goa's version of Holi) falls in March or April. The processions with traditional Goan dances and modern floats are the highlight.

You can expect reasonable prices during this period. Heat averaging 33°C (91°F) in the middle of the day is an unavoidable element of the hot season. Remember to bring some sun protection. It could be a good idea to wait to go out until after 3 or 4 pm.

Q. Where is white water rafting available in Goa? A. Stoke up the adventurous streak in you with white water rafting on the Mandovi River from mid-June to mid-September. Take in the verdancy of Mandovi Wildlife Sanctuary hemming the river while you manoeuvre your way through the wild waves. The packages start at Rs 1,890 with two sessions daily. Q. How far is the Goa Airport from Panjim? A. Goa Airport is 30 km from the capital Panjim. It is located in the village of Dabolim in the district of Mormugao in south Goa. There are cabs available at the airport or you can book a taxi in advance online at GoaMiles managed by the tourism of Goa. Q. Is south Goa better than north Goa? A. There can’t be a definite comparison between the two regions of one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. The distinction between the two should be drawn basis the type of vacation you are planning. While north Goa has a string of cafes, restaurants, watersports and a buzzing nightlife, the southern part offers quietude and secluded beaches. The first-timers should visit north Goa as it fulfills the typical touristy capers. Q. When is the best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls? A. Listed among the best waterfalls in India, the gushing waters of Dudhsagar cascade down from a height of 1,017 ft into the Mandovi River. The monsoon i.e. from June to August is when the waterfall comes to life tumbling down with full force forming a milky froth like spectacle. Take a train to Kulem railway station or a jeep to reach the falls. Q. Is there an Uber in Goa? A. You won’t find any app-based cab services in Goa. The state offers other options to get around. Hire a taxi from the airport to get to your hotel, get in touch with bike rental services to explore the city on your own or opt for the hop-on hop-off bus to cover the landmarks. Q. How do I hire a bike in Goa? A. Hiring bikes in Goa is pretty popular with tourists owing to which there are several options to choose from. Opt for a geared or a non-geared bike which cost between Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 per day. If you are travelling solo then go for pilot bikes which accommodate one passenger on the pillion. You can book a bike or a scooty on various rental websites as well. The prices tend to fluctuate with the season and demand, so book in advance if you’re travelling on-season. Q. How much does flyboarding cost in Goa? A. The thrilling watersport has made it to the list of top things to do in Goa and rightly so. The heart-pumping experience lasts for around 20 minutes and costs about Rs 2,800 per person. Plan your Goa trip between the months of October to May for flyboarding. Q. How far is Calangute from Fort Aguada? A. Aguada Fort is 7 km from Calangute and can be reached in about 18 minutes via Aguada-Siolim Road. Take a taxi or a bus to reach the 17th century Portuguese fort located on the Sinquerim beach. Q. Till when is Anjuna flea market open? A. Established by the hippies who settled in north Goa, Anjuna still remains one of the most popular flea markets in Goa luring tourists every Wednesday from 9 in the morning till sunset. The market is set up during the peak season from November to March. Q. Suggest some good family hotels in South Goa A. Although north Goa is better for a family holiday with restaurants and beach activities in vicinity but if you’ve planned a trip to south Goa then a few suggestions are Beleza by the Beach, The LaLit Golf & Spa Resort, Soul Vacation Resort & Spa, Caravela Resort, Palette Biera Mar Beach Resort and Regenta Resort Varca Beach.

8 reasons why october is a great time for goa.

October 17th, 2018 by OYO SEO

August? Too much rain. September? Too humid. November? The mad rush begins. December? Too expensive, too crowded. Wait, did we miss a month? Oh yes, October! The perfect month for Goa. Some perfectly good reasons why… By the time you’re done reading this, we bet you’ll be checking for flight tickets. And need we remind you, the Dussehra long weekend is coming up! What could be a better way to kicks December? Too expensive, too crowded. Wait, did we miss a month? Oh yes, October! The perfect month for Goa. Some perfectly good reasons why…tart the festive season?

Whether you are a cultural fanatic or not, the ambiance of Goa in October will surely soothe your senses. So, explore Goa and delve into the festive pool to rejoice yourself. Before you head on, take a glance at these Goa Tour Packages for the most amazing experience of your life!

1. Clear Blue Skies

It is such a relief to see beautiful blue skies after incessant rains for four continuous months. The weather is best enjoyed in an open jeep or on the faithful scooty. So get to Goa and rent one. Roam around without worrying about where to take shelter if it rains or getting drenched. The thing is that Goa is blesses with great weather for the better part of the year and so no matter what time you visit, you will not have much to complain about. Even the monsoons by the sea have its own charm, though going for a swim is strictly prohibited along most beaches at this time of the year. However, October brings its own share of fun and that is why it is the best time to visit Goa. The rains are over and the air becomes crisp again and there is this amazing freshness in the air which is not noticed at other times of the year. Those who want to go on a vacation before Diwali will find this to be the ideal time and you can complete your Diwali shopping from Goa itself.

2. Peak Season Perks

From flight tickets to accommodation rates, everything is much more affordable in October. Since the whole state is getting ready for the flood of tourists from November onwards, this is your best chance to enjoy all the facilities of the peak season at a more pocket-friendly rate. This is because some schools have their half yearly examinations and the Diwali vacation has not yet set in. So there are high chances that you will find the hotels having ample extra rooms and the rates are also very affordable at this time of the year. Too many people can simply make the beaches chaotic at a point and not everyone may like that. You will have the beaches to yourself in Goa before the great rush of tourists descends November onwards. You will have quite an experience when you find the beaches are clean and unpolluted which becomes quite the problem once the peak seasons begin.

3. Not Too Hot! Not Too Cold!

Thanks to the last leg of monsoon, the sun isn’t scorching just yet. The average remains around 28°C. It gets sunnier closer to November. The temperatures dip a little at night, so it’s pretty pleasant even without air conditioning. Unless you are a ‘can’t sleep unless the AC’s on 16°C’ person. Hence, those who want to enjoy the perfect weather will also find the October is the perfect month to make your Goa plans. You have the option of wearing light t- shirts and dresses in the day and at night snuggle under light sheets and there can be nothing better for honeymooning couples especially. You will love the breeze that blows from the sea at this time of the year- it is warm and pleasing at the same time and the air feels less salty because of all the rain the seas are fed with.

4. Crowds Away

This is probably THE BEST reason to go to Goa right now! No mad rush, no pushing through throngs of crowd wherever you go. Clean beaches and clean sunbeds are two major points October scores. The crowd in Goa can be truly maddening as the party season post- October starts to set in and November and December can actually make you go crazy if you are not a crowd- loving person. Not only is October comparatively quieter, but if you visit the more secluded beaches, you will notice a calm and peace that is practically impossible to come by at other times of the year. The seagulls are more accommodating and the birds move around more freely, as once the crowds descends on the beach, they usually like to stay away.

5. Green Life

The benefits of visiting right after monsoon. Everything looks freshly washed and brand new. And that wonderful smell of rain-washed air! Most definitely the best time to enjoy the lush green expanses of Goa.

goa tour in october

If you drive around the Goa countryside, you will see that the parks and plains are lush and green and the coconut trees along the beaches get ready to bear fruit again. The roads are clear and there is a burst of fresh vegetables and fruits in the local markets as the farmers bring in their fresh produce after the monsoons. You will simply love how beautiful nature feels at this time of the year.

6. Shack are Back

You won’t have to deal with the deserted feel of north Goa beaches. October is when most shacks resume business. The seasonal restaurants open up too, so you can have your pick from among the best dining options in Goa. The monsoons can be a hard time for the shack owners by the beach because the beach can get very windy and the rains can be hard. This is why most of the shacks are closed down for safety purposes and then they are reopened again around October. They also bring a fresh stock of sea food and the food somehow ends up tasting a lot better at this time of the year than at any other point.

7. Beach Bum

One who has visited Goa during monsoon knows what it is to be deprived of a swim. The Goan waves are not welcoming. Water sports become a rarity, even stepping in for a dip seems like a task on Fear Factor. The seas rage a lot less during October. Calmer seas means a great time for beach bums.

goa tour in october

As mentioned earlier, most of the beaches are shut down during the monsoons and you just have to wait at a distance and enjoy the beauty from there. October is the time when everything becomes calm again and the beaches open up. The waters are cool and crystal clear after the rain and with the sun out again, it is so warm and comforting to take a dip in the sea at this month. You will have the most heavenly experience ever.

8. Flea Markets

Flea market grounds that stand flooded during monsoons, turn into the most happening spots in town come October. The Saturday night market in Arpora and the flea market in Anjuna are some of the most popular ones in Goa. Since the set-up begins in October, there aren’t too many tourists and you can shop in peace. You will also have the chance to land up with good bargains at this point because the tourists haven’t hit the markets and the prices are still reasonable. You will not have to jostle through the crowds or shout above the others as you try to bargain. There is also fresh stock that is brought to the market after the monsoons and there is always something unique waiting for you at this time of the year. Your bags are sure to burst from all the shopping in Goa !

If offbeat is your style, then Goa in October is worth your time. Get going already!

One can also indulge in authentic sea-food that is also served at these shacks.  Curlies Beach Shack at Anjuna beach is one of the most popular beach shacks in Goa. Bubble’s Beach Shack in Vagator, Brittos in Baga, and Pina Colada Beach Shack in Colva, are other popular Goa places where you can retreat to spend some quality time with your friends and family .

Visit a spice plantation

Add spice to your Goa sightseeing by visiting a spice plantation in Goa. Goa is home to many spice villages and farms, which can give you a glimpse into the manufacturing of spices. Enjoy exploring an aromatic spice plantation which will refresh your senses. Learn the process of growing a variety of spices as you walk through the plantation site. You can also buy and take home some of the freshly manufactured spices and seasonings. A spice plantation tour is a popular inclusion in Goa packages for families as well as couples.

Try a Goan meal

A trip to Goa is incomplete without indulging in an authentic Goan meal. With rich influences of Portuguese, Indian and Catholic flavours, Goan cuisine is popular among tourists as well as locals. One can try a variety of Goan dishes cooked with aromatic Goan spices which impart it a unique flavour. Relish the mouth-watering dishes like Goan fish curry, Chicken Xacuti, Prawn Vindaloo, and Bebinca, the traditional dessert of Goa. Pousada by the Beach, Martin’s Corner, Soi, Souza Lobo and Mum’s Kitchen are some of the best Goa restaurants which serve delectable and authentic Goan cuisine.

Hire a Scooty

One of the best ways to explore Goa is to hire a scooty and ride through the charming Goa city and village streets. Enjoy the beautiful sights of the picturesque beaches, vibrant shops and historical landmarks. Explore Goa city at your own pace and convenience without having to follow any guide or timings. Crash beach parties, stop by a beach for a leisure walk, discover local markets, relax at a shack and relish amazing sea-food, and marvel at Old Goan churches. This experience will give you an opportunity to discover Goa places in your own way. A scooty hire is a must-do if you are considering a Goa trip with your friends, or a Goa honeymoon package.

Go shopping in Panjim

From street markets to trendy malls, Panjim in North Goa is a paradise for shopping lovers. Wander through the Municipal Market which sells a wide variety of local handicrafts, authentic Goan spices, handmade jewellery, unique souvenirs etc. at a reasonable price. For branded items, one can visit various malls and high-end stores in Panjim. For instance, at Caculo Mall you can buy designer clothes from your favourite international brands. Famous Foods in Goa

Goan fish curry, chicken cafreal.

Goa is blessed with a long coastline, which brings in an opportunity for fishing and an abundant supply of fish. This means fish curry features prominently on most menus in Goa. Fish curry isn't a blanket term or a one size fits all solution to cooking. With ample seafood like prawns, sharks, lobsters, crabs, pomfret, snapper, barramundi, clams, mackerels, mussels, and oysters come ample curries that are just as lip-smacking as the next. The common thread tying them all together is their use of fiery chilli, soothing creamy coconut, piquant spices like Triphala and souring agents like kokum. The combination of fish curry and rice essentially forms the staple food of Goa and can be called the traditional Goan meal. This tangy and spicy curry gives the perfect experience of Goa’s food traditions and culture. Add on a side of fried fish and prepare to be transported to culinary heaven.

Goa loves its pork and beef. Chicken isn't always the first choice of meat unless its Chicken Cafreal. Originating from Africa, this dish has been brought to Goa by the Portuguese. This is spicy chicken made from coriander, lime, green chillies, peppercorns and mint. Cooking this in the traditional Goan way gives it an additional smoky taste which provides a completely out-of-the-world experience.

Traditionally served during Christmas, Bebinca is one of the most enjoyed desserts of Goa. It is a multi-layered cake made with eggs, fresh coconut milk, sugar and pure ghee. Eaten hot or cold, this confection is laden with calories and love, as making it is no easy feat.

Chill at a shack at Anjuna beach

Live the aquatic life at baga beach, visit some amazing churches, feel blessed at shri bhagvati temple.

While on your Goa holiday, indulge in some scrumptious seafood and sip on a chilled beverage as you rub shoulders with people from all over the world, at the shacks at Anjuna beach . Take a stroll through the streets of Anjuna and Chapora and shop for some pretty souvenirs at the night markets or go to a beach party and dance until dawn at Anjuna beach. Take a walk on the white sandy beach and unwind during your Goa holidays.

Learn the art of scuba diving and swim alongside the beautiful creatures of the sea. Indulge in water sports like jet skiing, motorboat ride, banana boat ride, river cruise and dolphin rides to feed the adrenaline junkie in you. Calm your body and soul by taking an ayurvedic spa. Laze around at the beach, soak up the sun at Baga beach. This is the perfect activity for every Goa holiday.

Your vacation to Goa doesn't have to be just about fun in the sun.Seek some blessings at St. Cajetan Church in Velha Goa. Walk down the lane of Goa’s history at this beautiful monument. Know more about the old tales and stories by interacting with the locals. Check out some awe-inspired Italian paintings and the Corinthian columns at this domed church during your Goa trip.

As part of your Goa packages, visit the serene and historic Shri Bhagvati temple in Goa. Hire a boat and take in the serene views around the temple. You will be surprised to listen to different birds chirping around this locality. Go on a retail therapy and shop for some fancy handicrafts and souvenirs during your Goa holiday.

The Calangute Market Square  is one of the most popular shopping areas in Goa. It is located near Calangute Beach, which is a well-known tourist attraction. This is one of the reasons why it remains filled with shoppers throughout. It features multiple stores selling all kinds of goods, including beachwear, carpets, seashell art pieces, home decor, etc. If you are interested in souvenir shopping on a budget, consider visiting this market. You can also use your bargaining skills to secure discounts on goods while shopping at Calangute Market Square. Look for Goa trip packages that include a stay near Calangute Beach, so you can easily check out this market square during your visit.

Description.

Goa has earned its place as a premier tourist destination, not just because of its beautiful beaches and fascinating historic sites, but because of the warm welcome and laid-back charm of its people. Goa has been a melting-pot of races, religions and cultures over the centuries, leaving it with a wealth of wonderful old churches, temples and forts, a delightfully varied cuisine, and a multicultural lifestyle that’s quite different from the rest of India.

But it’s the white sands, glistening clear seas and swaying palms of the lush green landscape which continue to draw holidaymakers to this uniquely enchanting region. With fragrant vanilla plantations, rivers teeming with wildlife and herds of wild buffalo among the sights to be seen, it’s no wonder Goa is known for being a traveller’s paradise, and a firm favourite among British tourists. With dependable weather, too, it’s a dream winter sun destination.

Please note: Indian Authorities require customers to travel by return flights on the same charter airline. One-way charter flights from Goa are not permitted. If you do not take your outbound flight from the UK you will not be permitted to travel back on your return flight to the UK. Charter flights and scheduled flights cannot be mixed.

A must for visitors is a trip to old Goa with its stunning cathedrals, home to the sacred remains of St. Francis Xavier, and the fascinating museums such as the Goa State Museum and Houses of Goa which focuses on architecture.

Once the sun has set, try your hand at bargaining in one of Goa's lively night markets? And once you've worked up an appetite, you won't be disappointed with Goa's choice of culinary offerings - a delicious blend of Portuguese, Indian and local flavours.

North Goa: North Goa's coast has virtually unbroken, wide sandy beaches.

South Goa: Southern Goa's beaches are seemingly endless with fine, white sand and watersports are offered at many of the beach side hotels

The climate is without doubt an important reason for booking Goa holidays, from October to March the weather is consistently warm with temperatures staying between 25C (77F) and 30C (86F).

Visitors taking Goa holidays tend to think that food and drink in Goa means the famous fish, curry, rice and feni package. And for most Goans these are indeed the three basic necessities of life; fish, curry and rice. The long period of Portuguese rule, besides that of the Muslim and Hindu kingdoms, has left an indelible influence on the original style of Goan cooking and this has led to an exotic mix of truly tasty and spicy cuisine.

Food: The Goan people cherish their food as much as they value their daily siesta (break). And in an average Goan's daily meal, seafood always has a pride of place in some form or the other. From fried fish to exotic concoctions like ambot-tik, seafood is usually a must on the menu, except for the occasional break for some religious observance.

Alcohol: in Goa is cheap and there is a variety of it. A must try in Goa is the coconut drink. The coconut, still wearing its green husk, is opened at the top, and to its innocent liquid is added some not-so-innocent feni (a potent alcoholic drink made from cashew fruit), crushed ice and some sweet, fruit-flavoured cordial.

Nightlife: The strangest custom one comes across in some areas as they make a trip to Goa is the presence of a bar-cum-restaurant in almost every third house. All the trendy looking rooms of the houses are open to the public with a couple of chairs and a table. The atmosphere is just great - relaxing and conducive to a pleasant night out with family and friends. Most of the places serve exquisite seafood and other Goan delicacies along with having well stocked bars. And if you want to jive the night away, there are a couple of nice discotheques in Goa.

Pubs: The pubs in Goa provide an evening filled with fun and excitement. There are various pubs spread all over Goa, each designed with a different theme. Large groups of tourists as well as locals gather at these pubs to enjoy their favourite drinks and listen to the latest music. Most of these pubs provide all this and more at very affordable rates.

Any holiday to Goa would not be complete without a souvenir of your memorable visit in this magnificent paradise. The excellent local handicrafts of Goa are easily the most popular souvenir items and include brassware, terracotta, shell work, crochet, carved furniture, bamboo work, papier-mâché, etc. These are available in the Government Emporia and also shops and stalls near the popular tourist spots.

Another item which is on the list of every traveller who visits Goa is a pack of the famed cashew nuts. These are available practically everywhere. There are shops specialising in selling only cashew nuts. The nuts are available in a wide variety of tastes ranging from plain, salted and masala. The prices vary based on the quality and flavour. The charm of shopping in Goa lies in bargaining to your heart's content in markets and shops until you finally bring down the price and make the purchase a worthwhile experience.

Floating Palace: A truly unique opportunity to spend the night aboard a traditional Keralan Rice Boat and experience the beautiful Goan countryside whilst floating along the backwaters.

Things To See

Panaji: The capital of Goa and headquarters of North Goa District, a small and charming city on the left bank of silvery Mandovi River, with beautiful red-roofed houses, built in Latin style, also boasts many modern houses, well laid gardens, statues and avenues lined with Gulmohar, Acacia and other trees. Enchanting panorama unfolds from atop Altinho (HillTop).

Vasco Da Gama: A modern, well laid out city close to Mormugao Harbour which has beautiful and extensive avenues. The air terminus of Goa at Dabolim lies on the outskirts of the city. It is also the railway terminus for passenger service on the South Central Railway.

Crocs and Spices: Spend a morning on a boat trip along the waterways of the river Zuari, with the chance to see Kingfishers, Fish eagles and Kites and, when the tide rises, perhaps even a crocodile. After your morning on the water, climb up into the hills to visit a 160 year old spice farm with a wonderful Goan style lunch.

Waterfall and Wildlife: A visit to India's second highest waterfall, a 603 metre fall of water into a pool perfect for swimming and the opportunity to visit a wildlife sanctuary.

Castaway Cruise: A relaxing day with the chance to see dolphins, take a swim or do a little fishing and enjoy a barbecue on a beautiful secluded beach.

Taxis: For tourists, white Maruti Van Taxis serve as the main means of transport between resorts. One will find them lined up outside most charter hotels, where a board invariably lists the destinations in and around the region. The fixed rate fares only apply to peak season, and at other times one should be able to negotiate a hefty reduction from the demanded fares.

Motorcycle Taxis: Goa's unique pillion-passenger motorcycle taxis, known locally as "pilots", are ideal for nipping between beaches or into town from the resorts. Bona fide operators ride black bikes with yellow mudguards and yellow number plates. Fares, which should be settled in advance, are almost half the auto-rickshaw rates.

Ferries: If auto-rickshaws are the quaint, essentially Indian, mode of transport, flat-bottomed ferries are their Goan equivalent. Crammed with cars, buses, commuters on scooters, fisherwomen and clumps of bewildered tourists, these blue-painted hulks provide an essential service, crossing the coastal backwaters where bridges have not yet been built. They are also incredibly reasonable, and run from the crack of dawn until late in the evening.
