Radiohead Offshoot The Smile Announce 2023 Tour Dates

Kevin Johnson

After releasing their first live album last month, The Smile will be hitting the road again in 2023. The trio, which is comprised of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, will kick things off in Mexico City on June 22nd before heading north to focus on the East Coast of the U.S.

In the absence of their Radiohead bandmate Colin Greenwood, Yorke and Greenwood trade off the bass role. The band’s stripped-down sound leans on cool and catchy bass riffs that often venture into the instrument’s upper range.

Check out the band’s sound during their recent Tiny Desk Concert for NPR, where they play “Pana-Vision,” “The Smoke,” and “Skrting On the Surface.”

Live reviews

(Concert Radiohead in HMH 20-5-2016)

Bizar.

Het eerste hoogtepunt is "There There" van "Hail to the Thief", er komen drumstellen bij voor zowel Jonny Greenwood als Ed O'Brien. Prachtig!

Zonder veel schijn excuses of show. Het was goed zo en zo was het. We hebben er mooie herinneringen bij.

It's difficult to overstate how disappointing this was. We paid £75 to see one of the best bands in the world, and were unable to see the stage or get anywhere near the volume one would expect from a stadium performance. It honestly felt as though Radiohead were playing the Man U OT up the road, and we could just about hear the sound drifting over.

We moved to the back of the crowd to stand behind the speakers towards the back (stage right). Still incredibly quiet. No atmosphere whatsoever, despite a great setlist from the band.

I have heard from others that the AV experience in the front tier was incredible. It wasn't actually clear to me that this upgrade was on offer when I exchanged my tickets from the original MEN event on the 5th. I understand that this section was actually underfilled. I'm sorry, but it is unacceptable to segregate the crowd in this way, and provide the rest of the audience with such an underwhelming gig experience. We all paid premium prices at the end of the day!

Without exaggeration, this was honestly one of the worst gigs I've ever attended. At £150 for two tickets (and one was a birthday present), I feel completely mugged off.

I went to a Radiohead show, and I founded god.

There's is a reason why the show sold out within minutes. I was on a plane when tickets went on sale, by the time I landed in D.C the show was sold out.

I was forced to by resale.

The thing to remember about Radiohead is that they've always experimented with different type of sounds from different sources and have been able to incorporate them to their own sound. It is a very sofisticated sound. Being able to see them perform it life is quite a treat. But is also a religious experience.

The band become one with its sound and therefor the audience become part of the experience.

Visually they are able to incorporate the light show to their sound. Nothing remarkable, but yet essential to the experience.

I never had the chance to see them before, (even though I'm a music aficionado), I always have a hard time at arena venues. But I finally came to the realization that this guys will never be at small venues anymore. So I did made the effort to see them at Phillips arena. I was not disappointed, and nether should you.

After rain the previous night, the evening of April 18, 2017 was clear and temperate, making for a great evening. Radiohead dove deep into their repertoire, clearly enjoying themselves. Indeed, Thom Yorke was more animated and engaging than I've seen before (sadly, which has been in videos only), interacting with the audience. Much of the playlist came from "In Rainbows," with some new from "A Moon Shaped Pool," "Kid A," and "Hail To The Thief." Everything was expertly played and inventive, and the sound was loud and clear, but not overwhelming. They played for two hours, but time seemed to fly by, and the audience would have stayed for four if they were so inclined. The light show was unique but not so much as to distract from the band playing. From what I saw of them at Coachella (streamed live over YouTube), the band was having far more fun at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. All in all, one of the best concerts I've been to among the many hundreds I've attended over the last 40+ years.

this was the 8th or 9th time i've seen Radiohead and they get better every time. I utterly love their serious geekiness, their dedication to playing such beautiful musical melodies with sometimes quite ravey drumming and lights. During Idiotec it's difficult not to dance like an idiot at their live shows and. They played Fake Plastic Trees which was wonderful. Thom, Ed and Johnny are so talented and brilliant without trying to obviously entertain you. I just got back from Mexico where i saw them play to tens of thousands of adoring Mexican fans - all of them singing along - there were some quite emotional moments. I'm not a particular fan of Creep but when Radiohead do it, they fucking rock it. sorry to swear. Anyway, definitely one of the best bands i've ever seen live, and i've seen hundreds over the last 35 years.

This was our 3rd time seeing Radiohead; first time at MSG. As expected, they were amazing. A 17 song set followed by 2 encores!!!! They played quite a few songs from “Kid A”, a personal album favorite of mine along with much of the crowd there last night.

The acoustics and sound quality were incredible and we enjoyed the light show with the live screen in the back, showing all the band members playing from different angles. They did this at another show we saw a few years ago and were glad to see it utilized again this time.

A band that has been around since the 80’s continues to play with heart, passion, and set list/song variety each show. I appreciate them and what they give to their fans- a killer show every time.

After travelling from Perth, Australia to see Radiohead here in Pittsburgh, They certainly didnt disappoint.

I think I can safely say that I was the oldest person in the arena, but it didnt faze me, I was there to see my favourite band, and had waited patiently for this opportunity.

Each one of the boys are talented, multi instrumentalists. They just blow me away everytime I listen to them.

Thoms voice was brilliant. Love how he moves to the tunes, really getting into it.

The only negative thing I can say about the concert, was that it was at least 2 hours too short!

Absolutely Amazing!

Radiohead is better live than on recordings. Their music needs the space an atmosphere of a large arena/stadium to be fully realized. The musicianship was on point; the lighting effects were brilliant--it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. They played from a large swath of their catalog going back to OK Computer, including both hits and deep cuts. The highlight for me was to actually hear Karma Police live, although closely followed by an emotional True Love Waits. If Radiohead doesn't come to your hometown, they are worth a long journey to see.

I've actually seen gigs by Radiohead (or members of the band solo) over 100 times since the early days in 1993 - starting with a free gig at Nottingham Trent Uni... that was cramped and sweaty with a mosh pit and just a few glimpses of Thom's blond head bent over his guitar.

Since then I've seen Radiohead in venues of all sizes from South Park in Oxford to the Buddokan in Tokyo.

Their live shows were phenomenal, full of excitement and tension. I miss them. I've written about a lot of the gigs on my blog http://notrock.blogspot.co.uk/

Radiohead are going to “get together” in early 2023

"I'm sure we're going to start looking at other ideas for what comes next," Phil Selway revealed

Radiohead during the 'A Moon Shaped Pool' era

Radiohead are going to “get together” in early 2023, drummer Phil Selway has revealed.

  • READ MORE: Radiohead’s ‘KID A MNESIA’ exhibition is as untraditional, warped and magical as the band itself

The band’s last studio album came in 2016 with ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’, and their last tour was in 2018. In 2021, the band released ‘KID A MNESIA’ , a triple album celebrating their ‘Kid A’ and ‘Amnesiac’ records, along with a third disc of rarities and B-sides called  ‘Kid Amnesiae’ .

2023 marks two decades of their ‘Hail To The Thief’ LP , and Selway spoke to Spin about the band’s plans for the new year and whether they will celebrate that album with an anniversary edition.

“We’ve been very focused on the whole ‘ Kid A’ /’ Amnesiac’ thing, and I think that’s coming to its natural conclusion, going back through the reissue and [creating] the game scenario around that,” he said.

“We’re going to get together at the start of [2023], and I’m sure we’re going to start looking at other ideas for what comes next. ‘ Hail To The Thief’  — it’s a long time since that record, isn’t it?”

Philip Selway

Last summer, Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien discussed the band’s future , saying: “It might happen, but the other thing is… it might not. And does that matter?

Recommended

“There’s no Radiohead at the moment,” he added. “There’s a truth to what we do, so we’re not going to be one of those bands that gets together for the big payday.”

O’Brien continued: “The thing with Radiohead, we could do something in a couple years. We might not. But I think what it has to be, it has to be five people going, ‘I really want to do this again with you.’ And I think at the moment, because we’ve done it for so long, we’re all reaching out and having different experiences. And that should be allowed, and that should be encouraged.”

Since their last album, the band’s Thom Yorke  and  Jonny Greenwood  – alongside  Sons of Kemet  drummer Tom Skinner – have also formed a new band called  The Smile , who  released their debut album, ‘A Light For Attracting Attention’ last summer and headed out on an extensive 2022 tour .

Selway, meanwhile, will release new solo album ‘Strange Dance’ next month .

About radiohead.

Radiohead are an English rock band formed in Abingdon, Oxfordshire in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), brothers Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments) and Colin Greenwood (bass), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals) and Philip Selway (drums, percussion). They have worked with producer Nigel Godrich and cover artist Stanley Donwood since 1994.

After signing to EMI in 1991, Radiohead released their debut single "Creep" in 1992. It became a worldwide hit after the release of their debut album, Pablo Honey (1993). Their popularity and critical standing rose in the United Kingdom with the release of their second album, The Bends (1995). Radiohead's third album, OK Computer (1997), brought them international fame; noted for its complex production and themes of modern alienation, it is often acclaimed as a landmark record of the 1990s[1] and one of the best albums in popular music. Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001), recorded simultaneously, marked a dramatic change in style, incorporating influences from experimental electronic music, 20th-century classical music, krautrock, and jazz. Kid A divided listeners but was named the best album of the decade by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and The Times.

Hail to the Thief (2003) mixed rock and electronic music with lyrics inspired by the War on Terror, and was Radiohead's final album for EMI. Their subsequent releases have pioneered alternative release platforms such as pay-what-you-want and BitTorrent; Radiohead self-released their seventh album, In Rainbows (2007), as a download for which customers could set their own price, to critical and chart success. Their eighth album, The King of Limbs (2011), an exploration of rhythm, was developed using extensive looping and sampling. A Moon Shaped Pool (2016) prominently featured Jonny Greenwood's orchestral arrangements. Jonny Greenwood, Yorke, Selway, and O'Brien have released solo works.

Radiohead had sold more than 30 million albums worldwide by 2011. Their work places highly in both listener polls and critics' lists of the best music of the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

André Rieu announces US and Canada dates

Violin master André Rieu, one of the best-selling live acts in the world, is returning to the US and Canada with a brand new show. Rieu will hit Florida, The west coast and Vancouver and kicks off March 7 in Orlando’s Amway Center. The upcoming dates will be part of Rieu’s international “And The Waltz Goes On Tour”, named after his successful album for which he collaborated with Sir Anthony Hopkins. The complete itinerary can be found below.

[quote_right] “Billboard ranked his 2011 tour as the 9th highest grossing tour of the year, just behind Lady Gaga and has broken all classical concert records, packing stadiums with over 700,000 adoring fans each year.” [/quote_right]

Ode to the waltz Billboard ranked his 2011 tour as the 9th highest grossing tour of the year, just behind Lady Gaga. He has broken all classical concert records, packing stadiums and arenas with more than 700,000 adoring fans each year. Rieu has sold over 32 million albums globally and received 330 platinum awards for his albums. With his natural charisma, Rieu conducts his 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra and plays his 1732 Stradivarius violin to create a celebratory atmosphere.

“Every night when I play around the whole world, I see with my own eyes what the waltz does with the audience. People get out of their seats and waltz in the aisles spontaneously. They sing, they smile and for a moment they forget all their worries and are happy. That is why this tour is an ode to the waltz!” – says André Rieu.

More than waltzes Sure, the maestro and his orchestra will perform beautiful waltzes on this tour, but the concerts are much more than that. From famous Viennese operettas to film scores, spirituals to musicals, and from folk songs to marches; Rieu’s concerts are a perfect mix of thrilling, romantic, festive and emotional melodies combined with surprises, balloons, beautiful soloists and of course Rieu’s great sense of humor.

Breaking records in 2012 So far 2012 was a very successful year for the violinist. Rieu gave a record breaking series of 30 sold-out concerts in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He won a Classic BRIT award for his album “And The Waltz Goes On” and is nominated for a prestigious Mexican Luna award. With his first tour in Brazil Rieu reached the #1 position in Pollstar’s Box Office Chart of highest grossing tours in July. Leaving behind artist like Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, Coldplay, Celine Dion, The Black Keys and Pearl Jam.

The Rolling Stones Announce ‘Hackney Diamonds’ North American Stadium Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Rolling Stones are hitting stadiums across North America in 2024 to celebrate the release of their new album, Hackney Diamonds . The 16-city tour (which includes a headlining slot at Jazz Fest in New Orleans) kicks off April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, and wraps up July 17 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Ticket sales begin December 1 at 10:00 am.

Hackney Diamonds is the first Rolling Stones album of new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang . Produced by Andrew Watt and featuring guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Lady Gaga, the album was met with near-universal acclaim. “A collection of bangers (old-school division) that nobody in their right mind had a right to expect in 2023,” Rolling Stone ’s David Browne wrote, “Hackney Diamonds isn’t just another new Stones album, but a vibrant and cohesive record — the first Stones album in ages you’ll want to crank more than once before filing away.”
