Amazing Tracker

I love this app. Polarsteps easily tracks stops on roadtrips and flights - the trip tracker is awesome. Also love the profile page, especially the overall map view that has the red dots to show all trip stops - the only thing I’d want to see improved would be being able to see that map up close. Like if you could tap on the overall trip map behind the profile photo so you could see top level how many spots someone has been. That map is one of the coolest features but it’s kinda hidden behind the profile photo and other UI elements on the top half of that page. Even if you just repeat that map element at the bottom of the profile, so keep it up top behind the profile photo (because it’s great to see as the first thing), but then as a user scrolls down the profile through all the stats, you get to that map again - but here you can zoom in and actually see all the Stop Dots without any UI blocking it - that would be awesome! Really love your app. Can tell it’s designed and built by avid travelers!

Cannot get it to work for current trip!

I’ve been traveling for a month and found out about this from a fellow traveler. It’s brilliant in concept but I cannot get it to track my current trip. It synced all of my trips from 7 years ago from my photos with all gps location details, and attached photos to those locations. But the point of me using it is for my current trip and it is just a blank slat. Does not import my photos, location, or dates at all. I’ve done everything I can think of, went into a deep dive in my iOS settings, went through the trip settings, my account settings, read through pretty much the ENTIRE help center, scoured Reddit, updated my phone, deleted my account and reinstalled it, restarted my phone etc and NOTHING WORKS!! It wants me to add everything manually down to the date I flew and the location I flew into and then the next place I stayed etc but at no point does it ever finally pick up in syncing to fill the info in. I ended the trips, restarted the trip, every thing I can possibly think of and NOTHING works. What is the point in using this for your friends and family to track your travels if it only syncs trip details after you arrive back home?!?! The only trips it syncs are ones where I’ve ended AND flown back to my home location. Otherwise this stupid thing is WORTHLESS and you might as well just post on social media because it will be endlessly less frustrating!!!

Developer Response ,

Hello! Thanks for the review, we are sorry to hear that you are having some issues with your current trip not tracking correctly. Can you please send an email to [email protected] highlighting these issues so that we can look into it for you?

Cool but very bad photo suggestions / annoying to use

I like the UI and visualization, but it is such a pain having to fight the app in order to add locations (which it renames to the county—who ever cares about the county? Just name the step the location you searched, like Grand Canyon should not be renamed to the county), then when you add photos the suggestions are always off and you have to manually look through photos. What it should do is look at your photos and suggest all the ones on that same date, even if they don’t have the geo location tag (DSLR photos). Entering in dates is also a pain, new step button for some reason always assumes you do it on a new day, so I have to go back and manually change that too. I’m sure if you use it to actively track new trips it works okay, but I’m frustrated with the experience of filling it in manually. It captured some of the trips I did in the past by analyzing my photos, but again renames all the locations to stuff nobody knows (it calls Muir Woods national monument by its county name) and will split trips into two sometimes, with no easy way to combine them. Features seem to be there but usability is lacking IMO, not really worth the effort (I did try a few other competitor apps and this is more features but still a pain).
Hi , thanks for your feedback! We're continuously working on improving the app and would love to hear your thoughts. Could you reach out to us at [email protected] and elaborate on your feedback a bit further? Cheers!

Flighty app is AvGeek gold: Why this flight-tracking app is my new go-to travel companion

Clint Henderson

I've been obsessively tracking my flights for years.

I know it's superstitious , but I always text myself the flight information ahead of a trip so I can track my route on JetLovers.com. Somehow, I'm convinced it wards off a canceled flight. In any case, I've also previously used Google or another of my favorite apps, FlightRadar24.

But a new player in the space has made me a convert.

Flighty is a fairly new flight-tracking app that helps me track my flights on a day-to-day basis and keeps an ongoing record of my travels worldwide. The paid version even gives you a year-end summary that can be a fun look back.

Here's everything you need to know to decide if you should invest in this fun app.

What is Flighty?

go tour travels tracking

Flighty is an Apple iOS app that launched in 2019, and it shares real-time updates on your flights, including delays and cancellations. Sometimes, it knows when a flight is having issues before your airline app does.

"I love Flighty because it organizes all my flights and lets me know about changes many times before the updates show on the board at the airport or at the gate," said Mike Panzarella, chief technology officer of Rocket Dollar. He's been using Flighty since January 2023 and swears by it.

"It helps you feel calm and helps you understand issues before the throngs of others do ahead of you which is fantastic," he said. "I think it simplifies travel. It's almost like having an assistant or travel agent for $49 a year."

There are paid and free versions of Flighty. The free version gives you real-time updates on delays or cancellations and will alert you to gate changes, departure and arrival times, and when to check in. You'll also be able to track your flight, but you won't get push notifications or many of the other advanced functionalities.

The upgraded version is called Fighty Pro, and it costs $3.99 a week if you pay as you go or $3.99 a month if you buy a one-year membership for $47.99. You can also buy a lifetime membership for $249. (I ended up buying a one-year membership since I wanted to give it a good test run but wasn't ready to commit to a lifetime.)

The paid version has many more bells and whistles. Here are just a few of Flighty's features:

  • It automatically pulls in future and historical flights from your calendar.
  • Passenger flights are displayed on the screen when you open the app.
  • It gives you a countdown to your trip (up to 365 days in advance).
  • The app runs through 15 stages of a travel day, including the time until boarding and delays.
  • It displays your booking code and check-in information.
  • Live tracking of your flight begins 24 hours before your trip.
  • It will alert you to airport delays, late plane arrivals and other issues.
  • It also shows you taxi, takeoff and landing times.
  • A progress bar displays while you are in flight.
  • You'll be made aware of your arrival gate and baggage claim carousel upon landing.

According to the company, "Flighty was named an Editor's Choice app by Apple within days of launch." Indeed, I've found it a useful tool and especially fun since it appeals to my AvGeek interests.

How much is Flighty?

go tour travels tracking

If you want a family plan, you can choose one for $7.49 a month ($89.99 billed annually) or $449 for a lifetime.

Flighty lets you know when your flight is delayed

go tour travels tracking

Flighty will let you know if your flight is delayed in many cases. This can keep you from getting to the airport earlier than you need, thus saving you valuable time. According to the company, the No. 1 cause of delays is a late plane that is headed to get you. Flighty says, " ... we automatically monitor that for 25-hrs prior to departure."

Flighty will alert you to airport delays, late plane arrivals and other issues with your flight. A good example of that can be seen in the screenshots below. Flighty alerted me several hours before a flight to Cancun, Mexico, from San Francisco, and I was able to take my time getting to the airport ahead of the flight.

go tour travels tracking

However, I have found that Flighty isn't perfect at tracking delays. A recent long-haul flight between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) was delayed nearly three hours, with nary a notification from Flighty.

Flighty did let me know when we pushed back from the gate but failed to follow the flight as it ended up taking a mechanical delay and returning to the gate.

go tour travels tracking

In fact, to this day, Flighty records that the flight left on time, even though we ended up leaving about three-and-a-half hours late.

go tour travels tracking

Still, despite the imperfections, the app provides valuable information that most third-party tracking companies don't offer.

For example, its "Where's My Plane?" feature, which tracks your plane starting 25 hours before your flight, is a consistently reliable function.

go tour travels tracking

With this feature, you can better anticipate when a delay might occur, giving you time to make other arrangements before a formal announcement (if needed).

Flighty notifies you while in the air

go tour travels tracking

Flighty lets you know which gate you are leaving from or arriving at, as well as any gate changes that occur on the day of travel. The app is also a frequent presence while you are on a flight. It will let you know if your flight is on time and how long you have left on the flight.

On a recent Atlanta flight, Flighty let me know the flight would be arriving a bit early.

The app also tracks delays while you're in the air, as you can see with this notification about a flight from New Orleans to New York. Flighty not only let me know that my flight was delayed but also how late the plane would arrive.

go tour travels tracking

Another example of an inflight delay notification came when I flew Hawaiian Airlines' brand-new Dreamliner from Honolulu to San Francisco. As you can see, the flight was slightly delayed. In addition to showing the new arrival time, Flighty also displayed a nifty map of the San Francisco Bay Area and what San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was looking like that day.

go tour travels tracking

These features can be helpful or, at least, interesting when you are flying and may save you from having to open another app. They can even keep you updated when you aren't connected to the internet since the clock remains active.

For a traveler like me who gets anxious during travel, Flighty is super helpful. I feel like I'm always well informed during my trips and a little ahead of the game compared to other travelers.

Flighty can keep your friends and family in the loop

go tour travels tracking

You can also invite friends and family to share information with you on Flighty. Simply invite friends via a text message. Once they accept, you can set custom alerts and keep track of their flights and vice versa.

Flighty will update you if your friends and family have a flight change, cancellation, delay or other issue arise, depending on how you've customized the settings.

go tour travels tracking

"No other service has ever successfully built 'friends for flying,'" said Flighty founder Ryan Jones in a press release. "They all try to make it social and public. But that's not what users want. They want to share with just a few friends and family, all privately, without signing up for a new service."

Flighty will also give you data on your upcoming flights

go tour travels tracking

Flighty also gives you interesting data on your upcoming flights. You can see whether your flight is on time and the filed flight plan, among other options.

Flighty can provide data on your past year of travel

go tour travels tracking

One of the app's best features is "Flighty Passport." This option lets users view and share their personal travel map, mileage and other fun stats from their past year of flights. It will even pull data for your lifetime of flying.

As you can see, it shows me flights from both my current year of travel and prior years.

go tour travels tracking

According to Flighty, I've flown roughly 500,000 miles on 20 different airlines. That's a pretty big undercount, but more on that below.

The app also tells you how many hours you've lost to delays by the year and throughout your lifetime.

go tour travels tracking

In total, I've lost a whopping 44 hours to delays, according to Flighty.

Flighty is an AvGeek's dream

One of the best things about Flighty is all the information about your flights that the app has for you. It's wildly appealing if you are any kind of AvGeek.

The app tells you your most common aircraft type, the number of different jets you've flown, detailed information on each of your flights and lots of other interesting aircraft stats.

go tour travels tracking

These are only a few examples of what you'll find in the app.

Flighty isn't perfect

go tour travels tracking

As I mentioned above, Flighty doesn't pick up all delayed flights, but there are a few other quirks that have frustrated me and some other users.

Panzarella told me that Flighty lost one of his segments after an Aeromexico flight he was on got diverted.

"The final and original destination was never picked up from the diversion airport," he said. "It doesn't accurately reflect my flight totals for the year."

He told me he even flagged it to Flighty, but it was never adjusted.

I've found that the app hasn't found all my historic flights either. Some of my flights aren't integrated with my work and personal calendars, and Flighty has had a hard time finding many of my flights, especially from years past. My lifetime totals are wildly inaccurate, and even last year's stats are missing many flights.

Panzarella told me he'd had better luck.

"I integrated it with Tripit, and it's seamless," he said. "Tripit ingests my emails and then publishes them to Flighty automatically."

Indeed, once I had integrated Flighty with TripIt, it did find more of my flights, but some were still missing.

go tour travels tracking

The good news is that as the year goes on, I can keep an eye on my flight stats to ensure that all my flights are recorded going forward. You can also go back in time to add previous flights that might be missing from your lifetime totals, but that's going to be a project for me for another day.

Affordable summer vacations 2024: how and where to travel for less.

Monte Argentario in Tuscany, Italy—one of the cheapest destinations to head this summer?

As Google reveals that one of its most popular travel search trends is currently 'cheap summer vacations', there are lots of ways that travelers can find ideas to travel for less.

This is particularly important as Bloomberg reports that the post-pandemic travel boom, merged with curbs on hotel construction, overtourism and restrictions on Airbnb in many cities, is sending hotel rates sky high, especially in Europe.

It's also clear that travelers might be feeling the pinch. Vacasa, the home rental platform found that while 4th July and Memorial Day will be the big summer travel weekends, its poll suggests that some people have shifted their travel plans or planning behavior to be more budget conscious (81% of respondents), driven significantly by higher cost of living and inflation (74%).

Ways To Find Cheap Summer Vacations

Bloomberg recommends ignoring Instagram feeds for overhyped, over-expensive destinations and instead hitting places under the social radar for cheap summer vacations —in Italy, this might be the picturesque Costiera Cilentana, an hour from the Amalfi coast or the stylish but under-developed peninsula of Monte Argentario, just 90 minutes from Rome's Fiumicino airport.

If Italy still seems like too much on the beaten European track, Romania's travel star has been rising for a while, hot on the heels of the much-beloved (and still relatively cheap) Albania .

Cannes Film Festival 2024: Stars Arrive On Red Carpet For Annual Event

Televisaunivision 2024-25 slate touts latino culture, vix growth, juanpa zurita, william levy deals, northern lights could show up yet again tonight here s an updated aurora borealis forecast.

There are also alternatives to the hotel for cheap summer vacations. Bloomberg reports that European hotel rates have increased 50% since 2019, according to market researcher CoStar Group, so maybe a boat would be better value.

Alternatively, HomeExchange, the home swap website, allows members unlimited exchanges for only $220 per year, meaning you can travel relatively cheaply but also visit places that might not be quite so crowded this summer.

The U.K's Telegraph also advocates finding some of the nicest youth hostels or staying in a mountain bothy in Britain —these are remote shelters in some of the most breathtaking hills and woods across the U.K. that are free to use for just an annual subscription of $32 from The Mountain Bothies Association. There are similar refuge schemes across Europe in the most spectacular places—many also run a basic menu for breakfast and dinner.

Change your mode of travel for cheap summer vacations. Though there are cheaper ways to fly (the London to New York route remains one of the most competitive, if you are available to fly at any time) but one of the most inexpensive ways to travel on holiday this summer might be by train.

The Telegraph lists several examples, notably Eurostar tickets if you book a long time in advance (around $50 one-way)—it's sometimes easier to find deals if you book to Brussels and not London to Paris. The 51-hour rail journey from Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California can be had for just under $100 if booked in advance.

Inter-railing across Europe can be cost-effective or you can take the train on a 28-hour, 1,300-mile journey from New Delhi to Goa for just $13 (first class is only $67)—and it can cost less than a dollar to travel across parts of the Himalayas.

Change your mode of finance for cheap summer vacations. One final way of limiting the damage is to use multi-trip travel insurance (if you travel often) and definitely go for a bank card that doesn't add on charges for overseas use and find one that charges lower fees when transfering between different exchange rates.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

go tour travels tracking

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

Where Chicago Bears Rank in Travel Miles with 2024 Schedule

Gene chamberlain | may 15, 2024.

The last Bears game in London at Totteham Hotspur Stadium was 2019 against the Raiders. They'll face Jacksonville there this season.

  • Chicago Bears

With road games in London, San Francisco, Arizona, Washington D.C. and Houston, the Bears seem to have the inside track to plenty of airline miles this regular season.

While it will be a season with long road trips, they're not even close to the top teams in the league according to travel for the regular season.

The Bears will travel 19,460 air miles this season via Google air distances. This includes their 7,899.9 air miles to London and back.

Their other round trip regular season air miles are:

  • San Francisco 3,707.6 miles
  • Washington D.C. 1,188.66 miles
  • Phoenix 2,900.42 miles
  • Houston 1,878.66 miles
  • Minneapolis 710.06 miles
  • Detroit 476.76 miles
  • Green Bay 370.72 miles
  • Indianapolis 327.5 miles

Being located in the Midwest, the Bears are spared some of the huge coast-to-coast miles other teams will log.

The Chargers (26,803), Dolphins (25,869), Seahawks (25,797), Patriots (25,071), 49ers (24,575), Rams (24,263), Raiders (23,345), Eagles (22,756), Jets (22,397), Packers (22,209), Jaguars (22,075), Panthers (21,288), Cardinals (21,064) and Broncos (19,670) will all travel more miles in the regular season than the Bears, who rank only 15th in air miles for regular season. This according to totals tabulated by Bookies.com .

The Bears will go through 26 time zones with their travel, which is tied for fifth most. The Chargers (36), Raiders (34), 49ers (28) and Seahawks (28) will all travel through more time zones.

SHANE WALDRON'S PLAN IS TO USE ALL THOSE NEW PASS TARGETS IN OFFENSE

Even if the Bears are only middle of the pack in terms of miles they travel in the regular season, they’re still going to spend a good deal more time on planes than last year, when they had the third-fewest miles at 12,253.

The opponents to Bears games are known but the actual dates and times officially will be released Wednesday at 7 p.m. by NFL Network.

N.J. mall plans to add multi-level go-kart track, bar, ax throwing in major makeover

A two-story entertainment center featuring ax throwing and a go-kart track has been proposed at the Moorestown Mall six months after voters approved an unusual referendum aimed at revitalizing the Burlington County shopping destination.

The proposed entertainment center, known as Parky’s, was presented to the Moorestown planning board at its May 2 meeting, according to an overview of the plan on the municipal web site.

Parky’s would include ax throwing, also known as hatchet throwing, an indoor sport that has surged in popularity in New Jersey in the past decade. The location would also include a bar, arcade games, a multi-level go-kart track, a rooftop music venue and more.

The proposal is part of a plan to overhaul the 61-year-old mall, which has added 10 new stores since February.

The proposed entertainment center would be located in the mall’s former Lord & Taylor, said Moorestown Mayor Nicole Gillespie. Lord & Taylor — once a thriving department store chain, now an online retailer — was one of the mall’s anchor stores before it closed in 2020 .

The mayor said the entertainment center could help bring more visitors to the mall.

“I think it’s going to be a great addition that’s going to draw a lot of people there,” Gillespie said.

More than 66% of Moorestown voters approved a referendum in November overturning a longtime ban on games of chance or skill in the township. The ban stemmed from a 1962 referendum in which Moorestown opted out of the New Jersey State Amusement Games Licensing Law.

Gillespie, who supported lifting the ban on games of chance, said at the time that it would open the door to allowing businesses with amusement games to open at the mall. The referendum did not allow gambling.

Under the proposal, the entertainment center’s first floor would feature a speakeasy-style bar — a modern take on Prohibition-era taverns — with events ranging from jazz to comedy. There would also be a multi-level go-kart track, carnival games and more than 100 arcade games and virtual reality offerings, according to the overview presented to the planning board.

The ax throwing would be on the second floor, along with four themed golf concepts and duckpin bowling — a variation on traditional bowling involving smaller balls and pins. There would also be remote control car racing and gamified darts with digital projection.

On the roof, there would be an area for outdoor live music and entertainment.

Gillespie said the Parky’s proposal fits with local zoning and site plan approval from the Moorestown planning board is not required.

A spokesperson for the mall declined comment on the proposal.

Shopping malls across the nation have been deploying new strategies to attract shoppers while they face the loss of business to online retailers, vacancies exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving consumer preferences.

Moorestown Mall’s owner, Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, known as PREIT, announced five weeks ago it had emerged from its second bankruptcy filing in four years as a private company with a new chief executive officer . In addition to the Moorestown Mall, it owns the Cherry Hill Mall and about a dozen malls in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

Five new stores opened at Moorestown Mall this month, including Super Buy Rite, the first liquor store in Moorestown in at least a century. It opened May 3, mall officials said. Slime Bar, Palms Coffee Club, Runway Recycled and Salon Styles by Aleta also opened.

New Dimensions by Jeri, Nicole Wear and A Balanced Wear opened in April, mall officials said. Ryfe Restaurant opened in March and Deku Reflexology opened in February, the mall said.

Three other businesses — Mandarin and Fig Wellness, Dessert Soiree and Breaker 213 — are described by the mall as “coming soon.”

The 13 new stores, not counting the proposed family entertainment center, will occupy 51,000 square feet of the 1-million-square-foot mall.

Cooper University Health Care also opened a 166,000-square-foot outpatient facility at the mall in November.

“These exciting new additions showcase our ongoing dedication to crafting a diverse shopping experience that celebrates local and specialized businesses, nurturing a dynamic community environment,” said Evan Iepson, the mall’s marketing coordinator.

The Moorestown Mall opened in 1963. Other shops at the mall include Bath & Body Works, Five Below, H&M, Michaels, HomeSense, Sierra, Victoria’s Secret, Champs, Hot Topic and Daily Thread.

Moorestown is located about 14 miles from Philadelphia and is home to about 21,000 residents.

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

go tour travels tracking

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations.

◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.

◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

Where do birds go offshore? The answers may be blowing in the wind

A wind turbine in the ocean

How far do birds travel when they migrate? How long do they live? How are their numbers changing over time?

For centuries, people have tracked birds to answer questions about their lives and populations. But although tracking technology has evolved rapidly in recent decades — from aluminum leg bands with embossed numbers to light-sensitive geolocators — researchers who study bird behavior and migration still face a big obstacle: the ocean.

“We really have no way to know where birds are when they’re offshore,” said Emily Argo, fish and wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and recovery lead for the federally protected red knot and piping plover in Virginia.

a piping plover stands on the beach with a green leg band

Now that’s starting to change with the emergence of another kind of technology.

Along the eastern seaboard of the U.S., where wind speeds are consistently high, and the continental shelf is relatively wide, flat, and shallow, offshore wind farms are starting to come online to support the transition to renewable energy.

Thanks to the growing collaboration between conservation agencies and energy developers, offshore-wind infrastructure is generating new opportunities to track birds and bats when they're far from shore.

Eyes on the skies

Twenty miles off the coast of Virginia, two 600-foot-tall wind turbines — about the height of the Washington Monument — rise out of the open ocean. In 2020, Dominion Energy, Inc., built the structures as a pilot for a commercial-scale offshore wind farm scheduled to break ground this year.

To monitor the pilot project’s impacts on wildlife, Dominion installed a surveillance system with microphones, infrared cameras and daylight cameras capturing the spinning-blade zone on both turbines.

The primary purpose of audio-visual monitoring is to estimate activity patterns of birds and bats at wind-energy facilities, and the footage collected at the pilot turbines is encouraging.

“We have video of birds and bats flying through the area, but they avoid the turbines,” explained Matt Overton, a biological consultant for Dominion. “It’s clear they can see the blades spinning, and they’re flying around them.”

The footage also revealed something unexpected.

“Unbeknownst to us, at certain times of year, there are large numbers of insects out in the lease area, and we have video of bats foraging the insects around the turbines,” said Scott Lawton, environmental technical coordinator for Dominion. “They use the masts to trap them.”

Flight tracking

While the surveillance equipment provides surprising snapshots of bird, bat and even bug activity that scientists can use to generate new research questions, another monitoring device can shed light on where these creatures are going.

After discussions with Argo and colleague Pam Loring from the Service, Dominion agreed to install a wildlife-tracking system called Motus on both turbines at the end of the required monitoring period. Motus uses antennas to detect signals from birds and bats tagged with tiny radio transmitters.

Since the Motus network launched in 2015, more than 30,000 birds, bats and butterflies have been tagged, but the majority of the 1,500 antennas are on land. Meanwhile, many species migrate over the ocean.

Extending the Motus network offshore can help managers identify migration paths as well as stopover habitat on land, where birds fuel up before long flights over open water. Conserving those areas is critical, as migration is the most perilous time in a bird’s life cycle, due to the physical demands.

Knowing more about where migratory species do and don’t go can also inform the design and placement of future wind farms to ensure they don’t interfere with these arduous journeys.

To gather more information about the flight paths of the red knot and piping plover, Dominion agreed to fund a two-year project in Virginia, tagging these species with Motus transmitters that weigh just a fraction of an ounce.

Biologist Katie Oliver at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge led the tagging effort for piping plovers, coordinating with other partners along Virginia’s coastal islands and Eastern Shore.

Larry Niles of the nonprofit Wildlife Restoration Partnerships led the effort to tag 15 red knots — seven at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge on Cape Cod, and eight in New Jersey.

Just one year into the study, we’re starting to see results.

“We had two tagged piping plovers picked up by the receivers on the turbines, so we know these birds are out in that space,” Argo said.

High as a whimbrel

When the commercial-scale wind farm is built out, Dominion will install additional Motus stations, giving researchers more precise information about where tagged birds are in space, including how high they’re flying. A Motus transmitter doesn’t communicate a specific point — it gives off a radio wave signal, which is picked up by the antenna on a radio receiver. The more antennas you have in a given area, the better you can narrow down where that signal coming from.

The hope is that these birds are flying well above the turbines, and research on another migratory species indicates many of them are.

Dominion partnered with the Center for Conservation Biology at William and Mary College and The Nature Conservancy to fund a two-year tagging effort for whimbrels. Researchers used a different kind of tracking technology, solar-powered GPS tags, which use satellites to triangulate a signal and provide precise coordinates.

These tags have their limitations. For one, they’re too heavy for small-bodied birds like piping plovers to carry. One of the reasons researchers chose whimbrels for the study is they’re relatively big (about the size of a crow). They were also a strategic choice because other studies suggest they’re among the lowest-flying migrators — meaning they may be at greater risk for collisions.

But the study results show that, of the 30 tagged whimbrels, the majority maintained an altitude of 3,000 feet when flying near the turbines.

“There were a few that flew lower, but it’s mostly good news,” Overton said.

Setting the stage

The partnership between the Service and Dominion will carry over to the commercial site, where 176 800-foot-high turbines will produce 2.6 gigawatts of electricity, enough to power more than half a million homes each year.

“We will continue to work closely with the Service to monitor birds and bats,” Lawton said. “This is just the beginning.”

It’s also a preview of what’s to come. Offshore wind developers throughout the region plan to install systems like Motus as part of long-term monitoring in their lease areas, and the Service has worked with the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management and other partners to set the stage for their success.

In collaboration with the Biodiversity Research Institute, the University of Rhode Island and Birds Canada (the developers of Motus), Loring led an effort to optimize and standardize the use of Motus at offshore wind farms by testing the technology at one of the first facilities to become operational in the U.S. , Block Island Wind Farm.

The products of that effort, including a guidance document and an interactive study design tool, were released in 2023 and are available online.

“Now wind energy developers are starting to come to us for technical assistance,” Loring said.

The Biden administration has committed to approving 16 offshore wind farms by 2025, with the hopes that offshore wind energy will power 10 million homes by 2030.

To be prepared, the Service recently used funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to hire five renewable energy biologists. The new staff will provide technical support for these projects and assess the impacts of offshore wind energy on migratory birds.

"There’s still lots we don’t know,” Loring said. “With this added capacity, we can identify information gaps and start to address them through research studies with partners.”

Blowing in the wind

Additional offshore wind leases have already been proposed in the central Atlantic region, including one directly east of Dominion’s, creating the potential to ask more questions about migratory species. The answers may be blowing in the wind.
