The Sunderban National Park is many things at once, a biosphere reserve, national park and tiger reserve, such is the richness of this mangrove ecosystem. What we commonly call Sunderbans is actually a large delta spread across 40,000 sq. km between India and Bangladesh! Just to give you an idea of how vast it really is, consider this. It stretches from River Hooghly in West Bengal, India, all the way to River Baleswar in Bangladesh. In this UNESCO World Heritage Site (it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987), the mangrove trees stand lazily on the mudflats, which are visible during low tides, and submerged in height tide. Its name means “beautiful forests” in the local language, and it is not hard to figure why. Another reasons are the Sundari trees, which are dominant in this mangrove area. Their uniqueness lies in their roots which shoot upwards for respiration, particularly during waterlogging during monsoons.

A Short History of Sunderbans Tiger Reserve

The history of Sunderbans can be traced as far back as 200-300 AD. It is believed that the forests of Sunderbans were leased to the nearby residents during the Mughal period, who built settlements in them. In the coming years, however, those settlements were attacked by the Portuguese and salt smugglers in the 17th century. All that remains today are their ruins, most of which can be traced at a place called Netidhopani.

It was in 1875 under the Forest Act, 1865 (Act VIII of 1865) that a large part of these forests were declared as “reserved”. Post-independence, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1977 and established as a national park on 4th May, 1984. In the year 1978, Sundarbans were declared a national park, and in 1973, they were declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger.

When to Visit Sunderban Park?

The best time to visit Sunderbans is between November to March. The weather is quite pleasant during this time and creates the perfect conditions for tiger sighting and other wildlife. You can also visit it in the summer season, or the months from April to July. Remember though, that it can get very hot during this time, with the average temperature being 43°C. A lot of tourists find the heat quite difficult to deal with, but shouldn’t pose a problem for you if you are okay with it. Monsoons are not a good time to visit Sundarbans, as most of the areas are flooded and taking a boat ride would be quite unfeasible.

Geography of Sundarban Forest

Among other things, it is the unique geography of Sunderbans which endears it to the tourists. It is a part of the world’s largest delta and home to the largest mangrove forests. In its brackish waters, mudflats and trees, reside an incredible variety of flora and fauna. It is these, along with the vegetation, that makes this place what it is, a mystery which unfolds itself with every single visit. The vast Sunderbans also houses within it rivers, islands and villages.

Flora: Inside the dense forests of Sunderbans National Park reside a rich variety of flora. The 64 plant species which are found however, have learned to survive in brackish waters and saline inundation. Some of the common species of plants which are found include Sundari tree, Golpati, Champa, Dhundul, Genwa and Hatal. It is estimated that there are about 78 species of mangroves in these forests. They are extremely important because of the important role they play in the survival of marine organisms. From a distance, these halophytes exude an aura of mystery, who knows what the darkness within has to offer.

Fauna: Wildlife tourism is a major factor behind tourists visiting Sunderbans, and rightly so. After all, you’ve heard that it is home to a rich variety of wildlife, with the Royal Bengal Tigers enjoying a large presence. Nothing makes the tourists more excited than a tiger sighting. While that majestic cat certainly deserves all the attention and spotlight, there are other kinds of birds and wildlife animals who call these mangrove forests their home.

Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, other animals found in these areas are fishing cats, macaques, leopard cats, Indian grey mongoose, wild boar, flying fox, pangolin, and Indian grey mongoose. The chital deer and rhesus monkey are common sightings.

Sundarban is also famous for its marine life, and is quite rich in it. A crocodile seated leisurely on a mudflat, basking in the afternoon sun, draws an array of reactions from onlookers. Other than the saltwater crocodile, other kinds of aqua life include red fiddler crabs and hermit crabs. While many people may not be aware of it, but Sundarban National Park is home to a large number of reptiles. Some of the more famous ones are water monitor, king cobra and rock python.

A species of river turtles called Batagur Baska (which are classified as endangered by the IUCN) are found on the Mechau Beach. They are identified by their small head, a snout which always goes upwards and an olive brown colored carapace. The barking deer also deserves a special mention, as it is found at a place called Haliday Island.

Rivers: The Sundarbans delta is formed by the coming together of three rivers, Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Besides these three main rivers, there are three other rivers which form an intriguing network of channels.

Islands: There are a number of islands dotting this region, and some of them are attractions in themselves. The most famous of them are Kalash, Henry and Netidhopani.

Villages: A number of villages lie in close proximity to Sunderbans National Park like Pakhiralay, Dayapur, Bali and Sajnekhali. Village walks are popular among tourists because they offer a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the villagers. While visiting one of these villages, you can also observe the traditional method of honey collection.

Safari Timing

Sunderbans National Park offers only boat safari to the visitors. Jeep safaris are not conducted here. The safari timing is from 8:30 AM in the morning till 4:00 PM in the evening. The entry of boats after 6:30 PM is prohibited. Although the park remains open throughout the year, however, winter season is the best time to visit it.

Sajnekhali Watch Tower

Sajnekhali Watch Tower

Sajnekhali Watch Tower is a popular watchtower in the Sundarban National Park which is great for spotting wildlife animals. This watchtower is greatly appreciated among birdlovers. From here, one can spot various kinds of birds including Pelican, Plovers, Lap Wings, Kingfishers, White Bellied Sea Eagle and Sandpipers.

Henry Island

Take a walk through Henry Island to come face to face with the lushness of this region. Take a stroll on its beach or explore the dense mangrove jungle which is accessible by crossing a small bamboo bridge. You will also find a fisheries department here, consisting of more than 50 ponds. It’s another great way of observing the flora and fauna of this region.

Netidhopani

Netidhopani

The history of Sunderbans goes back hundreds of years. Under the Mughals, this land was leased to the people staying nearby who built settlements. Most of these settlements, although in ruins today, are great for sightseeing. One of these is a 400 years old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is also a road to the extreme right of the forest which was built by King Pratapaditya to guard the coastal area. Today, it is covered in earth and consists of a sweet water pond.

Burirdabri

There are many things that make Burirdabri famous. It consists of a watchtower, a mud walk and mangrove cage trail which leads to a viewpoint called Raimongal View Point. During the course of the mud walk, you come across a variety of fauna including snails, crabs and molluscs. The great thing about this watchtower is that it lets you see the Bangaldesh Sundarbans. Upto 10 people can be accommodated in this watchtower at any given time.

By Air: The nearest airport to Sundarbans National Park is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport at Kolkata. After landing at the airport, you can reach Canning by a local train or car. • • Do not drink tap water, as you may end up being severely ill or contracting various water-borne diseases. Always go for filtered water over coconut water.
  • • You should not carry any mineral water bottle while visiting the national park as Sunderbans is a “no plastic zone”.
  • • Always carry some light snacks along with fruits and dry fruits with you. They will come in handy when you want a small snack.

Things to Do

Watchtower sightings, organized tours, where to camp, where to stay nearby, how to get there, accessibility, tips for your visit.

Sundarbans National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is best known for its magnificent tangle of mangrove trees, encompassing the largest mangrove forest in the world. The park spans 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles) at the mouth of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers, which separates the countries of India and Bangladesh and borders the Bay of Bengal. Approximately 35 percent of the park lies in India, and the remainder is located in Bangladesh. On the Indian side, 102 islands are located within Sundarbans, and just over half of them are inhabited.

The word "sundarban" means "beautiful forest" in the local Bengali dialect. This swampy forest provides a home to a rare breed of Royal Bengal Tigers know to be strong swimmers. Long stretches of nylon net fencing have been installed on forest boundaries to prevent the tigers from venturing into the villages, as it's the only place in the world where tigers still hunt humans for food. Don't go expecting to see one though, as the native tigers usually remain hidden within the park's tiger reserve, a core zone where commercial and tourist activities are prohibited. Along the outskirts, in the Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary, however, visitors can expect sightings of various reptiles, monkeys, wild boar, rare birds, and deer.

The real enjoyment of visiting Sundarbans National Park comes from appreciating its pristine, natural beauty. Sadly, some people are disappointed by their visit, usually because they go with high expectations of spotting tigers. Wildlife spotting is hampered by the fact that you cannot explore the national park on foot or by vehicle. There are no jeep safaris and boats cannot touch down anywhere along the river banks inside the national park.

Instead, take time to wander through enchanted villages, discover the local way of life, and take part in cultural performances. You can even sample honey collected by local villagers in the Sundarbans region.

Tourists can also visit the game watchtowers, the most popular of which—due to their proximity—are Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, and Dobanki. Or, spend the day cruising the waterways by boat on a wager-guided safari, in search of monkeys, crocodiles, water monitor lizards, wild boar, otter, spotted deer, and birds.

Watchtowers located throughout the park provide a way for visitors to safely view wildlife. Three easily accessible towers offer DIY, hassle-free nature viewing for independent travelers. Sajnekhali is a favorite watchtower of birdwatchers, Sudhanyakhali offers you a decent chance of seeing tigers and spotted deer, and Dobanki has a 20-foot-high enclosed canopy for panoramic views of the park and its wildlife.

Other remote watchtowers require a full day of travel by boat to get to, but the reward for the journey is a pristine natural experience, free of crowds. Burir Dabri watchtower is located on the Raimangal River. It's notably picturesque and has a canopy walk over the mangroves that leads to a viewpoint. The ruins of a 400-year-old temple can be found at Netidhopani watchtower. Visitor numbers are limited here and special permits are required. Bonnie Camp is the highest watchtower in Sundarbans, at 50 feet tall. This scenic watchtower takes about six hours to reach from Sajnekhali, yet a rest house provides an overnight stay. Jhingekhali is located on the easternmost fringe of Sundarbans National Park and is often overlooked for its extreme remoteness. Still, this watchtower offers you the best chance of seeing a tiger, as well as several species of rare birds.

There are various ways to go about visiting Sundarbans National Park, and for those who find independent travel to be logistically complicated, an organized tour provides a good option. Organized tours offer a predefined itinerary, including day tours, overnight tours, or multiple-day tours, with accommodations included. Guided tours typically include safari-style boat trips on the waterways to visit watchtowers and villages. And, most tours originate from Kolkata and drop you back off in the same location.

Before embarking on an organized tour, keep in mind a few considerations, like flexibility and privacy. Boat trips organized by hotels and tour operators will usually book a full group of people. Depending on the group's demographics, this could mean a noisy and boisterous experience that spoils the serenity of your visit. Additionally, the bigger boats are not suitable for the narrow waterways, where you're more likely to spot the park's wildlife. If this is a concern, it may be best to make independent arrangements and hire a private guide.

Due to the wildness of this national park, primitive camping is not permitted on the grounds and many of the regional "jungle camps" do not offer tented options either. The one exception is Sunderban Tiger Camp , an eco-resort that offers glamping in canvas-covered huts. Each hut is 261 square feet and can accommodate up to four people on twin beds with Wellness Health Rest mattresses. Each hut has a western-style toilet, cold showers, and a hot water geyser option. Purified water, free Wi-Fi, and a wake-up service are complimentary with your stay.

Given the ecological sensitivity of the Sundarbans area, most accommodations are simple, rather than luxurious, with an eco-friendly focus and a village feel. Power is limited (many hotels run on either solar or electricity produced by a generator), and the bathwater is not always hot. You can also book a houseboat for a completely different experience.

  • United 21 Resort-Sunderban : United 21 offers 18 deluxe, standard, or triple-bedded rooms set in a serene jungle atmosphere. All rooms come complete with air conditioning and modern amenities. An on-site restaurant provides a sampling of several Indian cuisines and jungle safaris can be organized upon request.
  • Sunderban Mangrove Retreat : Located in the Jamespore village on Satjalia island, this serene eco-friendly stay sits on the bank of the river. Choose from one of four air-conditioned executive rooms, eight air-conditioned, double-bedded cottages, or ten non-air-conditioned huts. This pristine property has four on-site ponds for fishing, and the restaurant provides local cuisine, including a catch of the day like crabs, prawns, and a wide variety of fish. The Mangrove Retreat also has two motor-driven boats that you can book for a wildlife water cruise.
  • Sundarban Houseboat : Book a one-night, two-night, or three-night stay, complete with a tour, on a Sundarban houseboat. Rooms on the boat come complete with air-conditioning, LED televisions, attached bathrooms, and freshly-cooked, exotic meals. Multi-day tours include island hopping and visiting remote villages, cruising the mangrove forest, and stopping at the watchtowers.

Sundarbans National Park can only be accessed by boat, as the main entrance is on Sajnekhali Island, where all entry fees are paid. It's located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal , where Netaji Subhash International Airport at Dumdum is situated.

Unfortunately, independent travel to the park is quite laborious. It's best to go either by boat, car, or bus, as the train—a local train that does not take reservations—may be very crowded. You can drive from Kolkata to Godkhali, Sonakhali, Namkhana, Canning, Raidighi, and Najat. Once you arrive, take a ferry or hire a boat to Sajnekhali.

Public buses depart hourly (starting at 6.30 a.m.) from Kolkata to Sonakhali on a three-hour ride. From Sonakhali, take an auto-rickshaw to Godhkali, the gateway village to Sundarbans, and then another boat to Sajnekhali.

Because Sundarbans National Park is remote in nature and surrounded by water, handicapped individuals must book an outfitter who offers special services that cater to their needs. One such option is Rudra Nature’s Sprout Boat. Nature's Sprout offers packages for "differently-abled" individuals that journey only to accessible destinations, while catering to the medical needs of its travelers. They also provide doctors and emergency equipment, should something go array.

  • Foreigners need a permit and a valid passport to enter Sundarbans National Park. A permit can be obtained from the forest department at Sajnekhali or at the West Bengal Tourism Office in Kolkata. If you travel with a tour company, they will make these arrangements for you.
  • There's a boat entry fee for all park zones, and it's compulsory to hire one guide per boat.
  • Pack warm clothes if you're visiting from November to February, as the weather is cool and dry.
  • During the summer (March through June) expect hot and humid weather, and July through September brings rains along with the monsoon season.
  • All plastic is banned in this region, although this rule has been difficult to enforce. Leave plastic water bottles and bags at home, and don't litter.
  • Make sure to carry plenty of cash, as there are no ATMs in the park.
  • Watchtowers are enclosed by fences and are often full of loud, boisterous tourists.
  • Most people spend at least one night at Sundarbans. By staying longer, however, you'll be able to visit more areas, walk or cycle around the villages, go bird watching, and see cultural performances.

A devotional affair that is held annually on the island of Sagar in Sundarban is Gangasagar Mela. Perhaps, Travelling to Sundarban National Park during the winter months of January (14 -15) get you a chance to be a part of this spiritual fair. This auspicious gathering invites a mélange of devotees from across the globe who come to West Bengal state to drown their sins in the holy River Ganga. "Home of the Bengal Tigers"

Sundarbans tourism.

Known for hosting the biggest mangrove forests in the world, Sundarbans National Park is located around 110 Km south of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. It is also a Tiger Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve famous for being the home of the Royal Bengal tigers, among others, including roaring rivers and beautiful estuaries. Sundarbans National Park is a part of the Sundarban delta, which extends into Bangladesh. It is a UNESCO world heritage site with a large variety of birds and animal species, including reptiles such as salt-water crocodiles.

Shared between India and Bangladesh, the Sundarbans meaning beautiful forest, was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 1984. This area has a quiet charm that amazes visitors with the simplicity and uniqueness of its ecological balance despite offering habitat to some of the most dynamic and awe-inspiring flora and fauna. These forests are, in fact, the last remaining stands of the mighty jungles which once covered the Gangetic plains. Since 1966, the Sundarbans have been a wildlife sanctuary, and it is estimated that there are over 400 Royal Bengal Tigers residing in it. This forest has the largest number of Sundari trees. Sundarbans epitomize wilderness with its meandering rivers, springs, creeks and estuaries. It was a declared Tiger Reserve, home to the Royal Bengal Tiger - an almost extinct species that swim in the saline water and are often called man-eaters. Other endangered species in the Bioreserve are Batagur baska, King Crabs, Olive Ridley and Turtles. You can also find jungle fowls, giant lizards, spotted deer, wild boar, and crocodiles in these forests. The Siberian ducks are another famous attraction here. Besides this, there are over 64 varieties of Mangroves such as Goran, Genwa, Dhundal, Garjan, Kankra, Sundari and Passur. Make sure to visit the Nilkamalor Hiron Point and Katka viewpoints, which offer fantastic views of animals in the wilderness. Also, enjoy the mudflats called Chargheri Char, where you can enjoy coastal trekking.
