✈️ Basics of Travel in South Korea

Visa: Most travelers will need a K-ETA ( Korean Electronic Travel Authorization ), applied for at least 72 hours before departure. If you needed a visa before, you'll need a K-ETA now. Note that from April 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024, passport holders from 22 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and several EU nations, can visit visa-free – no K-ETA required!

Currency: South Korean won ( KRW or ₩ )

Arrival in Korea: all international flights arrive at Incheon Airport (ICN), one of the best-rated airports in the world. It usually takes about 1 hour to get through security & pick up checked bags.

Getting Around: Korea has an extensive & reliable public transport system. A refillable T-Money card is your ticket to buses and trains across the country; you can buy and refill yout TMoney card at any subways station or convenience store in Korea.

Internet & SIM Cards: Rent a Wi-Fi egg or purchase a prepaid Korean SIM card at the airport, available for up to one month of connection.

Travel Insurance: always recommended, though some credit card companies offers limited coverage when booking.

📝 South Korea Entry Requirements

Visa categories and conditions.

When you plan a trip to South Korea, you must be aware of the various Korean visa categories and conditions . Each South Korean visa category differs depending on the purpose and duration of one’s stay, but the most common categories are for tourist, business, and student visas. 

Most foreigners I encountered when living in Korea happened to be citizens of a primarily English-speaking country (like Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.S.A.) who have an E-2 visa.

This visa lets you stay in the country to teach English for 13 months - if you’re curious about teaching English in Korea and want to know more, please visit the English Program in Korea (EPIK) website.

Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA)

A Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) may be required for some nationalities, and a visa is needed for others. To check your eligibility and find out how long you can stay in South Korea, please use the official K-ETA Application Eligibility Guide .

Make sure to apply for a K-ETA at least 72 hours (or even earlier) before travel. Most travelers recommend acquiring this as soon as possible because it may take a while to process, or you may need to reapply, though one month in advance is generally enough time.

Visa-Free Travel and Visa Waiver Countries

For some nationalities, visa-free travel to South Korea is possible under specific conditions. If you come from a designated visa-free or visa-waiver country, you may enter South Korea without a visa for short-term tourism or business purposes .

Still - this benefit doesn’t exempt you from the K-ETA requirement, so be sure to secure one before you arrive in South Korea.

Documents and Passport Validity

Depending on your nationality and the type of visa you have, you may still need to provide other supporting documents, such as a return or onward ticket or proof of sufficient funds for your stay (and you may also need an itinerary if you are planning to venture Korea as a tourist).

Also, it's important that you check if your passport is valid at the time of entry and that it has at least one blank page for a stamp. Besides the passport, you can refer to HandyVisas to learn what requirements you need to enter South Korea.

Culture enthusiasts will love the idea that most of the tourist sites in Korea can also be visited for a small fee or free if they meet certain conditions (like wearing a hanbok in any of the five Seoul palaces ).

✍️ How to Apply for K-ETA: Step-by-Step

Before starting the process, you have to make sure that you have the following: a valid passport, an ID photo following the K-ETA conditions, dual nationality information (if applicable), travel agency information (optional), and an address in Korea .

There’s also a ₩10,000 fee (~$8USD) for the application process, and additional fees depending on your online payment method may apply. Be sure to check everything carefully before you hit send because once you pay this amount, you can never get it back.

You must also be willing to disclose a history of disease-related information and state past criminal records. For more information regarding this process, please visit the Application Requirements page of the K-ETA website.

Applying for a K-ETA is very simple. First, you must apply for K-ETA through the K-ETA official website or download the mobile app (in Google Play or Apple App Store ) at least 24 hours before boarding an airplane or ship bound for Korea.

Once you have chosen your mode of application, here’s a step-by-step guide to the whole process:

1. Choose your preferred language and service type on the upper left corner of the site. The website offers multiple language options. 

2. Click the two bars in the upper right corner, and press “ K-ETA Apply .” 

3. Answer the Terms and Conditions Agreement. Select your continent/region, and then select the country/region listed on your passport. Read the following agreements on the collection and use of personal information, and make sure you agree to everything before moving forward.

4. Fill in your passport number and submit your email address. Provide a valid and active email address, as you will receive confirmation and updates regarding your K-ETA application through this email.

5. Enter your personal and travel details. In this step, you are asked to upload a passport bio page image file. Fill in your personal and passport information, including your full name, date of birth, passport number, and passport expiry date. 

6. If you are a dual citizen, kindly indicate “YES” once you see this option.

7. Upload your phone number. If you don’t have a personal phone number, make sure that it is a contactable and reachable line.

8. Indicate if you have ever visited Korea before, select your purpose of entry, and enter the address where you will be staying in Korea. Toggle between the Korean or English option depending on the address given to you.

You can search using the postal code search or the address search. Hit the find button on the search engine and choose the address generated by the search results. Then, you provide the full address in the space below to include specifics like the floor and room number. 

9. Provide your contact number in Korea. If you don’t have a mobile phone number yet, you can input the number of your hotel, guesthouse, company, or acquaintance. Afterward, choose your occupation type.

10. Please declare if you are currently sick with an infectious disease and if you have faced any criminal charges in the past.

11. Upload your photo. You must upload a recent passport-sized photo of yourself with a plain white background. It should be in color, saved as an image file (preferably in .jpg format), and its size should be under 100 KB with a pixel density of less than 600x600.

Avoid wearing accessories like hats, scarves, or sunglasses in the picture, and opt for simple clothing. Remember that Korean identification rules require a full face, facing forward, eyes open, and looking directly at the camera.

12. Review and confirm your information. Before submitting your application, double-check all the information you entered to ensure everything is correct. If everything is accurate, proceed with submitting your application.

13. Pay the K-ETA fee. You will be prompted to pay the K-ETA application fee online using the provided payment options. Complete the payment process to finalize your application.

After completing these steps, you'll receive a confirmation email with your K-ETA application number. Once approved, the K-ETA will be sent to your email. Remember to print it out and carry it with you when traveling to South Korea.

Take note that your K-ETA is valid for 3 years (or 2 years if you applied before July 3, 2023) from the approval date. But, if the passport you used for the K-ETA application expires in less than 2 years, then the K-ETA approval will only be good until your passport’s expiration date.

🚌 Public Transportation and Safety

Using public transportation.

Public transportation in South Korea is known for being efficient, reliable, and relatively easy for foreigners to navigate, especially the Seoul Subway . When visiting for tourism or business purposes, you'll find that most transportation systems have English signage, albeit sometimes intermittently, making it simpler to find your way around.

Keep in mind that it's always a good idea to plan your routes in advance to avoid any confusion. To plan routes, download applications like Kakao Map ( Android | Apple ) or Naver Map ( Android | Apple ) to help you with your travel planning.

Medical Care and Emergency Assistance

In case you need medical care or emergency assistance during your time in South Korea, it's important to be aware of the available resources. You can dial 1339, which is the Medical Assistance Call Center, if you need help finding medical facilities or understanding the local healthcare system.

Additionally, make sure to visit your doctor at least a month prior to your trip to get any vaccines or medicines you might need.

Alcohol and Drug Regulations

It's essential to be aware of and adhere to the country's alcohol and drug regulations. South Korea has strict laws when it comes to drug possession and usage, with severe penalties for violations.

For alcohol consumption the rules aren’t as strict, considering that they only have stipulated the legal drinking age (19 years old) and the regulation of online alcohol sales.

This doesn’t mean that you should go crazy on your drinking. Keep in mind that despite the cultural drinking expectations , you must know your limits to keep yourself safe in a different country.

✅ Travel Advisory and Checklist 

Covid-19 advisory.

Before traveling to South Korea, it's important to stay updated with the latest travel advisories. Read the Department of State's COVID-19 page and the Embassy's COVID-19 page for country-specific information.

Currently, the Republic of Korea doesn’t require incoming visitors to undergo COVID-19 testing, show proof of vaccination, or fulfill quarantine requirements for entry to Korea.

However, they still need you to present a QR code from the Quarantine Information Advance Input System . If you haven’t accomplished this, then upon arrival, airport staff will have you fill out a yellow form.

The rules and regulations are always subject to change, and you should always visit the Korea Disease and Control Prevention Agency for updates regarding this matter.

If you’re required to do a PCR test upon arrival, please refer to this list of COVID-19 Screening Clinics . Even though the restrictions on COVID-19 have been lifted, it’s still essential that you abide by the local COVID-19 guidelines and protocols to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.

Q-Code System

When traveling to South Korea, you should be aware of the Q-Code system , which handles the management of incoming travelers. The Q-Code system is an electronic health declaration that helps Korean authorities monitor the health condition of travelers entering the country.

Upon arrival, you must download and install a mobile app on your device and register your personal information, including your vaccination status and PCR test certificate, if applicable.

The Q-Code system will assign you a unique code to track your health while you’re in Korea. You should carry your phone with you at all times during your stay in the country, as you may be required to present your Q-Code at any public health center or facility for monitoring purposes.

Last-Minute Checklist

To help prepare for your trip, create a checklist to ensure you have everything you need. Consider including the following items on your checklist:

• Valid passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining

• Adequate local currency for your trip

Currently, pre-departure negative PCR test certificates are no longer required to enter South Korea since September 3, 2022. However, upon arrival, travelers exhibiting symptoms like fever or cough need to undergo COVID-19 testing at their own expense.

There are no specific COVID-19 vaccination requirements for travel to South Korea. But, vaccinated visitors do benefit from not having to quarantine upon arrival. Remember that the situation can change in the future, so it is essential to stay updated on any new regulations regarding vaccination and entry.

US citizens traveling to South Korea for short-term business or tourism purposes don’t need a tourist visa from April 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024. The Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) is also not required during this period. However, your passport must be valid at the time of entry, and you need at least one blank page for entry stamps.

Foreign nationals entering South Korea won’t be required to undergo a 7-day mandatory quarantine. However, travelers must still obtain a valid visa or K-ETA before their trip. Moreover, I advise you register your travel and health information through the Quarantine COVID-19 Defense (Q-Code) system before traveling to streamline the airport arrival process.

Second question do you know if there are any rules when bringing medicine for personal use; do I need a proof from my doctor what they are used for? I would only stay 2 weeks maximum as a tourist. No problem, Pia! I'm glad to help. The main obstacle as a female alone in Korea will be finding places where you can eat alone, paying for the same amount of hotel room, and people to take your picture, as some tasks are just harder to accomplish with just one person. I've travelled all across the country as a solo female traveler, even when I had just arrived and couldn't speak any Korean, and otherwise the travel obstacles would be the same as if you were in a couple or group (navigation, communication, etc.). And no, you shouldn't; I've never had issues coming back with my prescriptions, but you can bring the proof along if it would help your peace of mind.

For Americans: Guide to South Korea Visa Application and Requirements

Americans trying to obtain a visa to visit or work in South Korea can be a daunting task. For Americans looking to visit, travel, work, or live in Korea, there may be lots of questions like, “what visa type should I apply for? What requirements are there?” and lots more. 

We will take a look at and address things like visa requirements including some information about K-ETA visas for Americans, what documents and financial requirements there are, and some tips on how to get a visa and travel to and from South Korea smoothly. Keep reading to learn more!

Visa requirements for Americans  

As the United States of America and the Republic of Korea are in a strategic alliance, American citizens can travel to Korea for up to 90 days visa-free with the Visa Waiver Program or VWP. But don’t get too excited, because this type of travel is just for tourism, business meetings, visiting family, or attending a conference. One also can’t apply for an extension of stay and will also need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization or ETA before arriving in Korea. 

As for the basic requirements for Americans heading to Korea they include a valid passport with a few blank stamp pages. As for currency restrictions for entering or exiting, there are currently none. But, unless you are planning to visit for only 90 days then you will need the proper and valid visa as well.

Visas: Business, Employed, Unemployed, Freelancers, Students, Minors, etc.

Korea does offer a few different visa types for visitors. Your visa will most likely reflect what it is you plan to do in Korea. So a student and a business person will most likely have different visas and will require some different documentation, too.

• Business – To come to Korea to do business there are several dozen different visa types available. However, pretty much all of them are in the D visa category. Interestingly, the D visa category, specifically the D-10 visa is the visa for those seeking employment in Korea. Usually, this visa type is only obtainable if one has come to Korea. More on that later on, though!
• Employed – Many people come to Korea on an E-2 visa. This visa type is for individuals from designated Anglophone countries or who have studied English for a certain amount of time to come to Korea as English teachers. This visa type allows one to work but must be sponsored by a Korean employer. 
• Unemployed – As mentioned above, a D-10 visa is for those actively seeking work in Korea. You cannot enter Korea with a D-10 visa because firstly one must acquire an Alien Registration Card or ARC. But, for example, if one enters Korea on one visa, they can visit immigration to change to a D-10 and find work while still staying in Korea.
• Freelancers – As for freelancers, the F-2 visa is for you. The F visa series is usually on a point-based system, and for many, the F-6 visa is the most common one. The F-6 visa is the visa for spouses of Korean citizens. But if you don’t plan on tying the knot before coming to Korea, then maybe apply instead for the F-2. This visa can be attained if you have high Korean language proficiency. You can prove this proficiency by taking the TOPIK or Test of Proficiency in Korean.
• Students – While the D visa series is often related to work, students who would like to come and study in Korea at a university or elsewhere should apply for a D-2 visa. For student visa applications you will need to provide official transcripts, proof of graduation, and financial documentation to show that a student can support themself while in Korea.
• Minors – For those under the age of 18 wanting to travel to Korea alone they will need a parent or guardian consent form and the standard K-ETA visa as one would need for the standard visitation and tourism purposes in Korea. 

Possible visa problems

       To try and mitigate as many problems with getting your visa as possible be sure to check, double-check, and triple-check you have all the necessary documents, have visited all the necessary offices, and have had the necessary rubber stamps stamped. 

      One problem I personally ran into was trying to obtain an E-2 visa while I was already in Korea having been visa-free for a few months. In order to get the proper immigration stamps, I actually had to travel to Fukuoka in Japan to visit the Korean embassy there to get my proper paperwork done. This took about 2-3 days and while it was sort of fun to travel to Fukuoka, it was also some unnecessary stress and confusion for me. When in doubt contact Korea’s immigration services and the American consulate in Korea for any more information. 

K-ETA 

      The K-ETA stands for Korean Electronic Travel Authorization . The K ETA is a visa waiver that allows Americans to travel in Korea visa-free for up to 90 days. This was once something you could do by just pretty much showing up with a valid passport. 

      But today the K-ETA visa is a mandatory requirement for Americans entering Korea without any other sort of visa ready. To get one, you have to apply online on the official K-ETA visa portal site and the cost is 10,000 Korean Won which is about $10. This is non-refundable and you have to apply for a K-ETA at least 24 hours before embarking to Korea whether that is by plane, ship, or some other means (hot air balloon?).

QR code upon arrival

The Q code system is a way to shorten quarantine inspection and make the whole process a bit more convenient. The Q or QR code is a barcode that can be scanned on your phone. You can get your QR code you have to fill out a series of information online including your passport information, travel itinerary and dates, and your health information including quarantines and vaccines history. 

Assuming you have filled out all the right info and your health information is deemed safe for entry you will be issued a QR code that can be downloaded on your phone. You can show this code when entering the quarantine checkpoint once getting off the plane. Though folks with a pre-issued QR code might not need some documents like a negative covid test certificate and health questionnaire, it is a good idea to provide these as well! Though mandatory quarantines have been partially lifted, the QR code is a must for those entering Korea!

Quarantine protocols

As of recently, the quarantine process has become a bit more relaxed. Those who have all of their vaccinations have a QR code, have a more or less normal temperature, and show no signs or symptoms of COVID may proceed with their trip but must also submit a PCR test within 3 days. If one has a high fever, shows symptoms of covid, etc, then you will have to quarantine for 6-7 days at a hospital and will have to pay for your stay!

Bank balances required

When entering Korea, generally a bank balance or bank statement is not required like when entering other countries. However, for people applying for student visas, the student must provide proof of at least $3,000 for a 3-4 month study experience and at least $10,000 for a year-long study experience.

If you are traveling to Korea for the first time, don’t feel overwhelmed or daunted! Here is a brief list of some travel agencies that have been approved by the Korean government:

Visa processing time

To make sure your visa is processed on time and promptly be sure to provide all your necessary documents, payments, and information on time and to the correct offices. If you have checked all of the above then your visa may take anywhere from 14 business days to 30 business days. Now, remember those are BUSINESS days so it may feel like longer. So, try to submit it on a Monday!

Just some of my tips!

I first traveled to South Korea back in 2014. I have traveled back and forth from other countries and back to South Korea again. Here are some of my tips from my experiences getting two different visa types;

• Show up early, for any and all appointments. Some steps of the visa process will require you to show up to offices and submit documents in person.
• Try to keep fit and healthy, many visa types will require a clean bill of health!
• If you partake in drugs do try to quit, Korea drug tests for certain visa types and a positive drug test will complicate your ability to enter Korea.
• Always make and carry copies of your documents, even old documents from prior visa applications. 
• The easiest way to get your visa is in your home country, I tried to acquire documents while abroad and it was a real headache and nightmare! 
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends, family, your potential future employer, or the Korean or American consulates or embassies.
• Don’t feel pressured to accept offers from recruiters or others who will try to get you to come to Korea too quickly.
• Familiarize yourself with Korean law to make sure your visa fits what you are coming here to do, and be clear on what your rights are while in Korea.

The Visa Waiver Program in USA

     The United States of America also offers a visa-free program called the Visa Waiver Program. It allows citizens of up to 40 countries to come to America for up to 90 days for business or tourism. The Republic of Korea is one of the countries included on that list. So, if you are a Korean citizen, you can come and visit America for up to 90 days. Sweet deal!

What are the situations where South Korea can deny your entry (even if you are visa-free?)

      South Korea can, however, deny your entry into the country, even if you are visa-free. If you have been convicted of a crime (like violent crime, maybe some speeding tickets won’t get you banned!), if you try to enter the country with certain contraband like weapons, drugs, or “immoral paraphernalia” if you test positive for drugs if you have an invalid visa or passport, if you cannot prove your relationship with your inviter or your inviter is not qualified to invite you into the country, or if your documents can’t be verified.

      Korea is known as the Land of Morning Calm. Be sure to keep calm and compile your documents and information, always be on time for visa appointments, and keep a sunny attitude. You will be enjoying  soju  and  noraebang  adventures before you know it!

Not many countries have the sights-to-size ratio of South Korea . You can get from one corner of the country to the other in just two and a half hours, and in between you’ll find mountain trails leading to Buddhist hermitages, super-spectacle K-Pop concerts, back-alley pubs serving craft rice wines, enchanting bamboo forests and much more.

Getting the most out of a visit here starts with getting your entry requirements in order, a simple enough process for most travelers. Here are the basics on who needs a visa to South Korea and how to apply.

Who can travel to South Korea visa-free?

Many travelers – including those from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and most European countries – can visit Korea for up to 90 days with no visa required. Canadians can do so for up to six months, while South Africans get 30 days. To check the most up-to-date requirements for your country, visit the Korean government’s Visa Portal and enter your information in its  Visa Navigator .

Although you might not need a visa, you will need to apply for a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (₩10,000) on the  K-ETA website or K-ETA app (for  iOS  and  Android ) at least 72 hours before your departure. Once you’ve applied, you should receive your results via email within 24 hours. Your K-ETA will remain valid for two years from the date your application is approved, meaning you don’t have to reapply if you visit multiple times within that window.

Who needs a tourist visa for South Korea?

Citizens of countries that don’t have a visa-waiver agreement with South Korea or that Korea doesn’t grant visa-free entry will need a visa, which is typically for a single entry and permits stays of 90 days.

If you do need a visa, after entering your information in the Visa Navigator , select the visa you’re applying for (most likely Ordinary Tourist, or C-3-9) and then find the eligibility criteria that applies to you (most likely “travel for holidays or leisure”). Complete your application online ( e-Form ) or by hand ( downloadable PDF ) and then visit a Korean embassy or consulate with your application or a printout of your completed e-Form, your passport, a 3.5cm x 4.5cm (1.4in x 1.7in) passport photo and any additional required documents. The application fee for a basic tourist visa is $40, though it can vary by country.

The Jeju-do visa exception

Jeju-do Island is a designated Special Tourist Zone, which means many (though not all) citizens from countries that require visas for South Korea do not need them to visit Jeju-do for up to 30 days. Note that you must arrive in Jeju-do via ship or direct flight from abroad; you may not connect through another South Korean airport.

Extending your stay in South Korea

In almost all cases, if you’re visiting South Korea as a tourist, you are not allowed to extend your stay. If you need to stay longer because of an emergency, however, contact the Korea Immigration Service. The Hi Korea website provides immigration info for international visitors and residents.

Visas for working and studying in South Korea

Thanks to its all-conquering pop culture and dynamic economy, South Korea is an attractive destination for international students and professionals, and a wide range of visas is available for those wishing to study or work in the country. The first step is determining which visa you need, whether you’re seeking to enroll in a Korean university, teach English or do something else. You can sort through the options and get details on eligibility and requirements at the Visa Navigator  site. Work and study visas generally permit stays of up to two years, with one year being the most common length.

Working holidays in South Korea

South Korea offers one-year working holiday visas to citizens of 25 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many European nations. Travelers with a working-holiday visa are permitted to work up to 25 hours per week and can also study the Korean language at private academies and university programs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Working Holiday Info Center and Working Holiday Guide provide extensive information on who can apply, what the restrictions are, and work, study and housing resources.

Visas for people of Korean descent

If you’re of South Korean descent, you’ll likely have the option of applying for an overseas Korean visa, colloquially referred to as a gyopo visa. These are available to individuals who were born in Korea but have acquired another country’s citizenship or whose parent or grandparent was a Korean citizen. These visas allow initial stays of up to two years and provide a lot of flexibility in terms of what you can do for work or study.

South Korea Tourist Visa Requirements

Foreigners need to apply for a tourist visa for South Korea if they are not eligible to travel with a K-ETA . A tourist visa for Korea is required if the visitor:

Is not from a visa-exempt nation

Wishes to stay longer than the time permitted with the ETA (usually 90 days)

Does not meet all of the other ETA requirements for South Korea

In these cases, visa-free entry is not permitted. Tourists must instead begin a South Korea travel visa application through the embassy or consulate.

Nationalities that need a tourist visa for South Korea

If you are not eligible for K-ETA, you need a tourist visa to travel to South Korea short term.

It takes longer to apply for a South Korea visa than an ETA. If you need a visa based on your nationality, get started with your application well ahead of your trip.

Passport requirements to travel to Korea

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in South Korea. You should also have at least 1 blank passport page for the entry stamp.

If your passport is about to expire, you should renew it before applying for a K-ETA. The electronic travel authorization is only valid with the passport you use to apply. The details on your ETA must match your passport exactly.

What You Need to Stay in South Korea Long-Term

You need to apply for a visa to go to South Korea for a long stay. All foreign nationals need a South Korean visa to stay long-term, regardless of nationality.

There are several different types of South Korean visa available including for:

• International trade

You’ll need to meet all the visa requirements to apply. You must enter Korea for the purposes stated on your visa and abide by the visa conditions.

Health Requirements for South Korea

You need to meet the health requirements to travel to South Korea. Speak to a medical professional a few weeks before your trip and get any vaccinations you may need for Korea.

COVID-19 health requirements for South Korea have ended. You do not need vaccine certificates or a pre-departure test to travel .

Entering South Korea: Immigration Requirements

As well as your passport, you need these documents to clear Korean immigration.

• Arrival Card : You do not need to submit an arrival card if you’re traveling with a K-ETA . This entry requirement applies to visa holders only.
• Customs declaration form : All passengers need to fill out a customs declaration form for South Korea. If you’re entering Korea with your family, you can submit just one form. If you’re arriving in Korea via Incheon International Airport (ICN) Terminal 2 or Gimpo International Airport (GMP) you can complete the customs declaration online before you depart.

Note that holding these documents does not guarantee entry to South Korea. Korean border officials have the right to grant or deny entry based on immigration laws.

South Korea Entry Requirements

A passport is required. U.S. passport holders must have a valid U.S. passport and a visa or an approved Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) to enter Korea. Most U.S. passport holders traveling to Korea for tourism or business purposes for less than 90 days can obtain a K-ETA.

Apply at the K-ETA website for 10,000KRW. The fee is non-refundable even if the application is denied. Travelers must apply for the K-ETA at least 24 hours prior to boarding a flight or ship bound for Korea. A visa required for all other purposes, including employment, teaching English, and for stays longer than 90 days.

To stay beyond the period of stay authorized upon entry, visitors need to apply for an extension with Korean Immigration. Individuals who overstay their authorized time without an extension are subject to fines that must be settled before they can depart the country.

Changes of status from one type of visa to another (from tourism to teaching, for example) are normally not granted in the Republic of Korea and must be obtained at a Korean embassy or consulate in another country after leaving Korea.

U.S. citizens must submit to biometric data collecting when they enter the ROK. Immigration officials will take index fingerprints and digital face photographs during passport inspection. Officials with government agencies or international organizations, and children under 17 years of age, are except from data collecting.

Active-duty U.S. military personnel with the U.S. Forces Korea are allowed to enter the Republic of Korea under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). They must have the correct Department of Defense (DOD) identification and travel orders to be admitted. Every civilian accompanying the force (including DOD civilian employees, invited contractors, and family members) must have a valid passport and obtain an A-3 SOFA visa in advance.

Active duty military personnel should obtain a tourist passport prior to leaving the U.S. to accommodate off-duty travel elsewhere in Asia. DOD travelers should consult the DOD Foreign Clearance Guide before leaving the United States. Members of the Department of Defense with U.S. Embassy assignments must enter with diplomatic or official passports and the correct visas.

DOD personnel on official business must have DOD APACS country clearance, while non-DOD members on official business must have clearance from the State Department's eCC system. Active duty service personnel may enter the Republic of Korea on leave with DOD identification and orders.

Exit permits are not required to leave Korea. However, if a parent requests through the Korea Immigration Service that a travel restriction be placed on a child, the child is likely to be prevented from departing Korea.

Certain visas types including those granted to teachers and entertainment workers require negative HIV/AIDS test results. Republic of Korea immigration law also states that immigration officials may deny entry to individuals suspected of having communicable diseases.

South Korea Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

South Korea’s visa policy is generally simple but has a couple of exceptions and specific rules that allow visa-free access where otherwise a visa would be necessary.

The Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) was introduced in September 2021 and is now mandatory for all travelers without visas 18 or older and 65 or younger. This means there is no true visa exemption anymore. However, some nationalities are exempt from the K-ETA until 31 December 2024.

In this article, I will guide you through South Korea visa requirements, K-ETA, tourist visas and exceptions.

Passport holders from 110 countries do not need a visa to travel to South Korea. Unless temporarily exempt, all visa-exempt nationals between 18 and 64 (inclusive) must have a pre-approved K-ETA to travel to South Korea.

There are also various provisions for short-term visa exemptions for other nationalities:

• 30-day visa exemption for holders of visas or residence permits from select countries and in transit to a third country
• 30-day visa waiver for Jeju Island if arriving by direct flight
• 15-day visa exemption for tour groups visiting various regions in Korea
• Tours around Seoul if in transit

In all other circumstances, a tourist visa is required to enter Korea.

South Korea doesn’t issue Visa on Arrival (VOA) or eVisa for tourists.

South Korea Visa Requirements 

• Passport’s expiry date must be after the intended departure date (no extended validity required)
• Return or onward ticket
• K-ETA if visa-exempt (unless temporarily waived)

Visa Exemption (K-ETA Required)

South Korea introduced its form of Electronic Travel Authorization called K-ETA in September 2021. K-ETA is now MANDATORY for all visitors who are exempt from visas. Some nationalities are temporarily exempt until 31 December 2024.

K-ETA eligibility

110 nationalities are visa-exempt. The duration of stay varies from 30 days to 6 months. You must obtain K-ETA before traveling (unless your nationality is exempt until 31 December 2024 ).

K-ETA validity 

The K-ETA is valid for 3 years from the date of approval but cannot be longer than the validity of the applicant’s passport.

Applications submitted before 3 July 2023 only received 2-year validity.

The K-ETA costs 10.000 KRW (~8$), payable by card during the online application. A 3% card processing fee is levied, bringing the total to 10.300 KRW.

K-ETA application

You can apply for the K-ETA online on the only official website – the K-ETA Application Portal . Beware of agents and intermediaries posing for official sources.

All you need is your passport, a valid email address, and a debit or credit card.

K-ETA processing time

The processing time of the K-ETA is usually at most 72 hours but can be longer in rare instances.

K-ETA exemption based on age

Everybody younger than 18 years is exempt from the K-ETA. Everybody 65 or older is exempt too.

Visa Exemption (Jeju Island Visa Waiver)

Jeju Island has its own visa waiver provisions to boost tourism to South Korea’s most popular holiday destination.

Below are the key requirements for Jeju Island visa waiver provision:

• All nationalities except the below 23 are eligible for Jeju Island visa exemption
• Jeju Island visa exemption is valid for 30 days only for the province
• Visitors must enter and depart Jeju via direct flight (i.e. without stopping in any other part of South Korea).
• Visa-exempt but K-ETA-required nationalities must still obtain K-ETA unless temporarily exempt

Ineligible countries

Jeju Island visa exemption is not available for these 23 countries:

• Afghanistan

The above 23 countries also become eligible if they:

• Have a Certificate of Invitation issued by the Jeju Government or Jeju Island Immigration Office (OR)
• Hold a permanent residence permit from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, or USA AND have previously visited South Korea 3 times since 1996 or once since 2006

Visa Exemption (Visa Holders of Third Countries)

You’re eligible for a 30-day visa exemption if you have a visa or a residence permit from one of the following countries :

You MUST also meet ONE of the following requirements:

• You arrive in South Korea from one of these countries and depart for a third country
• You arrive in South Korea from a third country and depart to one of these countries
• You arrive in South Korea from one of these countries and have transited in a fourth country for less than 72 hours before entering South Korea. You then depart for a third country.
• You arrive in South Korea from a third country, then depart for one of these countries, and will transit to a fourth country for less than 72 hours.

Visa Exemption (Transit Tours at Seoul’s Incheon Airport)

If you’re in transit at Seoul’s Incheon International for less than 24 hours (which is the limit anyway), you’re eligible for any of the free tours around Seoul.

The tours range in price from free to $150 golf courses although most are cheaper than $5. They range from 1 hour to 5 hours in duration.

You can check out the tours and book online via the Incheon Airport website .

Upon arrival, go to the Information desks at either terminal to get routed to your tour.

If you’re from a visa-exempt country but require K-ETA, you must still obtain K-ETA (unless temporarily exempt) for transit tours at Incheon Airport. 

The following 23 countries are not eligible for transit tours:

Visa Exemption (Tour Groups)

Various visa exemptions exist for organized tour groups.

Gangwon-do Region

A 15-day visa exemption for Gangwon-do and Seoul Metropolitan Area is available to tour groups from:

• Philippines

This is only if flying in and out of Yangyang International Airport until May 30, 2024.

Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, Jeju-do Regions

A 15-day visa exemption for these regions is available to tour groups from:

This exemption is only available to Chinese tour groups.

It allows stays on the mainland of South Korea for up to 5 days followed by up to 15 days on Jeju Island.

Tourist Visa from the Embassy

Visitors seeking a tourist visa must obtain it from a South Korean embassy. None of the available e-visas are for short-term tourism visits.

The standard visa for tourism is C-3-9 (Ordinary Tourist).

Transit Visa

If you’re not leaving the airport’s transit zone (i.e. not clearing immigration) you do not need a visa or a K-ETA under the condition that:

• Incheon Airport (Seoul): You depart within 24 hours;
• All other airports: You depart on the same calendar day.

If you will be passing through immigration, you must obtain a transit visa, K-ETA or utilize visa exemption as part of one of the transit tours. 

South Korea Arrival Card

Tourists arriving in South Korea have to fill out and submit an arrival card. This is a standard procedure in many countries and chances are that you will be given a card already in the airplane.

If you hold a K-ETA, you’re automatically exempt from having to complete and submit an arrival card.

Should i apply for k-eta for my children.

Provided your children are 17 years old or younger, it is not necessary to apply for K-ETA for them.

Should I apply for K-ETA if I have a tourist visa?

No. If you have a visa for South Korea you don’t need to submit K-ETA. The K-ETA is only for visa-exempt nationalities.

Do I need a new K-ETA for every visit to Korea?

No. The K-ETA is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. As long as it’s valid, you don’t need to apply for a new one.

Do I need a K-ETA to travel to Jeju Island?

Yes. Even though Jeju has special visa waivers, you still need to submit a K-ETA.

How much money should I have when I apply for a South Korean tourist visa?

Embassies do not disclose this information and it depends. Travelers have been saying that you need to have a minimum of 150$ per day in your bank account.

Do I need proof of COVID vaccination or a COVID test before traveling to South Korea?

  **   On November 17, 2008, the Republic of Korea joined the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP). As a result, on reciprocity, U.S. citizens can visit the Republic of Korea without a visa for duration of up to 90 days or less if the purpose of the trip is for tourism, business meeting, attendance at a conference or visiting families or relatives. (Extension of stay is not permitted) 

   A U.S. citizen, who is not qualified with VWP or not eligible to enter to Korea without a visa, is kindly requested to apply for an appropriate entry visa.

   A U.S. citizen, who wishes to work, or to engage in profit making activities, is kindly requested to apply for an appropriate entry visa.

   For U.S. citizens(only who was Korean or either of your parents/gradparents was Korean), a five year valid multiple entry F-4 Visa is issued. This visa holder can stay up to 2years each time he/she visits the Republic of Korea until their visas expire.

• Touching urine or other body fluids from an animal infected with leptospirosis
• Swimming or wading in urine-contaminated fresh water, or contact with urine-contaminated mud
• Drinking water or eating food contaminated with animal urine
• Avoid contaminated water and soil
• Avoid floodwater

Clinical Guidance

Airborne & droplet, avian/bird flu.

• Being around, touching, or working with infected poultry, such as visiting poultry farms or live-animal markets
• Avoid domestic and wild poultry
• Breathing in air or accidentally eating food contaminated with the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents
• Bite from an infected rodent
• Less commonly, being around someone sick with hantavirus (only occurs with Andes virus)
• Avoid rodents and areas where they live

Tuberculosis (TB)

• Breathe in TB bacteria that is in the air from an infected and contagious person coughing, speaking, or singing.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). Prevent bug bites

Although South Korea is an industrialized country, bug bites here can still spread diseases. Just as you would in the United States, try to avoid bug bites while spending time outside or in wooded areas.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

• Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
• Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
• Consider using permethrin-treated clothing and gear if spending a lot of time outside. Do not use permethrin directly on skin.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

• FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
• Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
• Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
• 2-undecanone
• Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

• Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
• Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in South Korea include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip:

• Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
• Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
• Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
• If you are outside for many hours in the heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
• Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
• Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
• Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

• Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
• Do not dive into shallow water.
• Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
• Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if you are driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

• Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
• Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
• Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
• Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
• If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately.  Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

• Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
• Go to a doctor right away.
• Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

• Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
• If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
• Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
• Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
• If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

• Use latex condoms correctly.
• Do not inject drugs.
• Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
• Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
• If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

• Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
• Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance for things your regular insurance will not cover.
• Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medicines you take.
• Bring copies of your prescriptions for medicine and for eye glasses and contact lenses.
• Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call South Korea’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
• Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

Malaria is a risk in some parts of South Korea. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

• Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
• Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
• Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

• Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
• Make sure there are seatbelts.
• Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
• Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
• Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
• Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

• Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
• Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
• Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

• Wear a seatbelt at all times.
• Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
• When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
• Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
• Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
• If you choose to drive a vehicle in South Korea, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
• Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
• Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
• Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
• If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
• Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

• Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
• Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
• Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
• Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
• Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

• Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
• Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
• Follow all local laws and social customs.
• Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
• Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
• If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

South Korea ETA Requirements for US Citizens

The South Korea ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a visa waiver that grants US citizens the possibility to visit the Republic of Korea visa-free for up to 90 days each time.

The K-ETA can be obtained by Americans by applying online from the comfort of their home or office. They only need to abide by the Korean visa waiver requirements and have a stable internet connection to complete an electronic application form.

Do United States Citizens Need a Visa to Visit South Korea?

No, US nationals do not need a visa to visit South Korea. However, they must either have an approved K-ETA or queue at the border to complete an arrival card to enter the country.

The K-ETA visa waiver for American citizens is quick and easy to get online . It avoids having to go through the lengthier application process for a Korean visa at a diplomatic mission or waste time waiting in line to get entry authorization on arrival.

Americans with a K-ETA can visit South Korea for a maximum of 90 consecutive days without a visa .

The K-ETA for Americans can be used to enter South Korea visa-free for the following reasons :

• Visiting friends or family
• Attending meetings and events

For trips to South Korea longer than 90 consecutive days and/or for purposes other than the ones mentioned above, it is necessary to have a Korean visa for US traveler s. This can be done by inquiring at the nearest Korean consulate or embassy.

In order to complete the simple Korean Electronic Travel Authorization application process , United States passport holders must meet a few basic visa waiver requirements.

Currently, American applicants need to meet certain criteria, which includes having the following:

• United States passport , which is valid for a minimum of 6 months
• Passport-sized photograph of the American citizen
• Active email address , which will be used for K-ETA correspondence
• Credit or debit card to pay the ETA Korea fee

In addition to these documents, US nationals must share information about their trip (e.g., travel plans, proof of onward travel and accommodation), and their current occupation , and answer a few health and security-related questions.

Since the US passport is automatically linked to the K-ETA once this is granted, American travelers must carry the same passport used during the application process on their trip to the Republic of Korea.

The South Korea ETA online application for US nationals is quite easy, simple, and straightforward. Usually, it does not take more than 20 minutes to be completed.

American visitors must submit the following information when applying online for the K-ETA:

• Basic information about the traveler , such as full name, gender, date of birth, and country of citizenship

The application form may have some additional questions about health, security, and other aspects.

Then, US travelers have to complete the payment of the Korea visa waiver processing fee . This can be done with a debit card or a debit card. All major bank cards are accepted.

American applicants are advised to make sure that the information provided matches the US passport and any other data submitted. Small errors and inconsistencies can lead to issues processing the visa waiver. Double-check your answers before submitting the form.

K-ETA processing time for US visitors

Citizens of the United States will receive approval of the K-ETA in up to 48 hours . In many cases, you will get your visa waiver even sooner.

Traveling from the US to South Korea

When arriving in South Korea, nationals from the United States must show their US passport along with the K-ETA . Once the border and immigration officials have checked all the information, they will grant entry to all eligible passengers.

Although the document can be presented in digital format once in South Korea, we recommend that you print a hard copy to have it with you during the entirety of the trip.

American citizens must note they are not allowed to overstay a Korean visa waiver . If this happens, you can be denied entry in future trips to the country.

It's about to become more complicated for Americans to visit South Korea

Starting in September, all U.S. citizens visiting South Korea will be required to complete an Electronic Travel Authorization form to get approval before traveling, the country's Ministry of Justice announced earlier this year.

The Korean government first launched the K-ETA as a pilot program in April to provide visa-free entry for international visitors to the Republic of Korea, according to a press release from the Korean Embassy in the U.S. The United States is one of 21 countries currently with designated visa-free entry.

U.S citizens are able to spend up to 90 days in the country as a tourist, for business or to visit family.

U.S. citizens are required to apply for the K-ETA through the Republic of Korea's ETA website or the mobile app at least 24 hours before departing for South Korea. Although the fee is waived, for now, the K-ETA will cost $8.75 come September and is valid for two years. You can expect to hear back regarding the status of your application via email, also within 24 hours.

K-ETA application steps 

The first step involves agreeing to the terms and conditions, which is standard for most travel authorization forms and requires your consent to the use of personal and sensitive information, including your passport number.

Next, you will provide your passport number and email address, to which your application information will be sent. Unless you are traveling for work, I would suggest using a personal email address that you check often.

The third step will ask you to upload a copy of your passport and enter corresponding information.

You'll see below that the U.S. pops up as a country currently designated as having visa-free entry. Note that if there are any issues with your application, you may still be prompted to contact the Korean Embassy in the U.S . for consular/visa services, which we will discuss later.

Step four asks for additional identifying information, along with the address and contact number of where you will be staying in Korea.

This step also asks you to upload a photo, similar to what's required to obtain a U.S. passport (i.e., no smiling), and also specifies photo size restrictions. It took me several minutes to size my photo down to fit. To avoid any headaches with sizing, I would recommend getting your photo taken as if you were applying for a passport. I got mine taken in June for my passport renewal (read the ongoing saga ) at CVS for $14.99.

If you click "Next," and it prompts you to step five, you can safely assume that your photo has been uploaded correctly and meets all size requirements.

The final step will ask you to double-check that all of the info you've submitted is correct.

For those applying from now through August, please note that K-ETAs are being issued for free as part of the K-ETA pilot program. This means that once you press "Finish," your application will be submitted for review. For the purposes of this story, I did not actually intend to submit an application as I do not currently have travel plans to South Korea. I incorrectly assumed that after hitting "Finish," I would be directed to step six before actually submitting.

At this point, I am admittedly a bit panicked, as I have inadvertently submitted false information to a foreign government. I immediately email the powers that be to explain my error by submitting a question through the website's " Ask Us " feature.

So, if and when I go to South Korea in the future (here's looking at you, boss), I will simply need to reapply for a K-ETA. Phew!

Bottom line 

The K-ETA is not only necessary to enter South Korea at this time, but it will also exempt you from submitting arrival cards necessary for immigration. Please note that the K-ETA does not exclude travelers from current pre-travel testing requirements. Per the U.S. Embassy in South Korea , proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure is still required for all inbound travelers, including those who have been vaccinated, in addition to a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon entry for most visitors. You can apply for a quarantine exemption based on certain eligibility requirements, including visiting family or attending a funeral.

Irish nationals are eligible to enter and stay in Korea for up to 90 days with a K-ETA for tourist purpose.

Using the Q-code system is recommended for all people entering South Korea to upload their health condition and after entry COVID-19 test results.

Day 1 PCR test will not be mandatory from people entering South Korea from October 1. Korean and foreigners who wish to get a COVID test, may visit the Public Health center of their resident area to get a test free of charge.

Here is a helpful checklist of South Korea travel documents that you will need to present before you enter the country:

- A valid Q-Code. Foreign tourists are required to register their vaccination history through the Quarantine COVID-19 Defence (Q-Code) System before your trip.
