DP World Tour Championship: Field, tee times, and groups for the season finale

Published: 13 November 2023 Last updated: 18 November 2023

The DP World Tour reaches its conclusion in Dubai.

The DP World Tour reaches its conclusion in Dubai.

The DP World Tour reaches its climax in Dubai for the season-ending Tour Championship, but who is playing and what are the tee times?

Jump To: Round 4 Tee Times | Who Will Win

Four is set to become five for Rory McIlroy, as the Northern Irishman prepares to end the season as Europe’s No.1 golfer once again. It will be the second time Rory has defended the prestigious Race to Dubai title, having previously won the Order of Merit in 2012, 2014, and 2015.

It is also the first time a player has been crowned champion before the final event of the season. McIlroy did not play at last week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge, where the only players with a chance of catching the four-time Major champion failed to secure enough points to stay in contention.

McIlroy has now won the Race to Dubai title on five occasions.

Adrian Meronk’s T15 finish in South Africa only gained the Polish player 94.5 points, keeping him an insurmountable 2,294 points adrift of McIlroy, with the only other contender, Ryan Fox, finishing T51.

The most legitimate threat to McIlroy’s defense would have come in the shape of World No.3 Jon Rahm , had the Spaniard decided to make the trip to Sun City. A solid performance at the Nedbank would have put a sizable dent into the 2,083-point deficit, making Rory’s walk in Dubai a little less processional.

There is still a rather big tournament to be won in Dubai however, and with McIlroy and Rahm gunning for their third and fourth Tour Championship titles respectively, the competition is likely to be as fierce as ever.

Jon Rahm won his third DP World Tour Championship in 2022.

Rahm secured a two-shot victory over the stellar field in 2022, making it three wins and a top-five finish from his four trips to the Earth Course. In doing so, Rahm became the first player to win the Tour Championship three times, and the only player to have won five Rolex Series titles.

While McIlroy and Rahm will no doubt be heavily fancied once again in Dubai, a contingent of their Ryder Cup stablemates including Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, and Matt Fitzpatrick will all relish the opportunity to steal bragging rights out in the desert.

Viktor Hovland couldn't hide his delight after Tyrrell Hatton drove the green on the par-4 16th at Marco Simone.

Where is the DP World Tour Championship being played?

The 45th and final event of the DP World Tour season is held at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, a luxury golf community rated among the best lifestyle estates in the world.

The Estate boasts two Greg-Norman-designed courses – Fire and Earth, with the latter having played host to the DP World Tour’s flagship event for 14 years.

At 7,675 yards, the par-72 Earth course has been inspired by the great parklands of Europe and North America, featuring rolling terrain, rushing water, and unforgiving bunkers. The greens typically run at 12 on the stipmeter and water is on play on the 6th, 14, 16th, 17th, and 18th holes.

Englishman Justin Rose holds the course record at the Earth Course. His ten under 62 in 2012 however was not quite enough to prevent Rory McIlroy from winning his first Tour Championship title.

Read where the Earth Course placed in our Top 100 Best Golf Courses in the Middle East and North Africa .

The DP Tour Championship is hosted at the Earth Course on Dubai's Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Who is playing in the DP World Tour Championship?

The Tour Championship will feature the top 50 players in the Race to Dubai Rankings including six of the top 20 in the Official Golf World Rankings .

Ten members of Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team from Rome will tee it up in the desert with only Justin Rose and Ludvig Aberg missing out. Other notable names not making the 50-player cut are England’s Aaron Rai and Scotland’s Richie Ramsey, who hold six DP Tour wins between them.

Seven of the top 20 players in the Race to Dubai Rankings hail from Scandinavia, including Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen, Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard, Sweden’s Alexander Bjork and Vincent Normrman, Finland’s Sami Valimaki, and Norwegian FedExCup Champion, Victor Hovland .

Non-European golfers in the field include Ryan Fox, Min Woo Lee, Ryo Hisatsune, Thriston Lawrence, Tom Kim, Daniel Hillier, Zander Lombard, and Lucas Herbert.

The Hojgaard brothers will both compete in the DP World Tour Championship.

Who will win the DP World Tour Championship?

After a stunning 12-under par 60, England’s Matt Wallace (3/1) has launched himself into title contention, firing 12 birdies to top the leaderboard by a shot going into Sunday’s final round.

Hot on Wallace’s heels however are Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes Viktor Hovland (9/5) and Tommy Fleetwood (14/5) who will fancy their chances of a season-ending win in the desert.

Nicolai Hojgaard 14/1

Jeff Winther 18/1

Jon Rahm 28/1

Ewen Ferguson 30/1

Jon Rahm won the 2022 Tour Championship while Rory McIlroy won his fourth Race to Dubai title.

DP World Tour – Race to Dubai standings

Going into the season-ending Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy has compiled an insurmountable lead over the chasing pack from just nine tournaments played. Jon Rahm sits 2,082.53 points behind McIlroy from just seven events with Poland’s Adrian Meronk sitting in third a further 212.25 points adrift from 23 tournaments.

Can players secure PGA Tour cards?

A Strategic Alliance between the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour has enabled a formal pathway to be established for players to earn dual membership status. Following the Tour Championship, the top 10 players in the Race to Dubai Rankings (not otherwise exempt), will gain 2024 PGA Tour exemptions.

Adrian Meronk is currently the highest-ranked player, not otherwise exempt through the top 50 of the 2023 FedExCup standings, and is in prime position to earn an exemption into the Players Championship and two PGA Tour Signature Events in 2024.

Also in contention for dual membership are Rolex Series winner Victor Perez, Ryder Cup rookie Robert MacIntyre, and first-time DP World Tour winner Ryo Hisatsune.

DP World Tour announces global 2023 schedule

DP World Tour announces global 2023 schedule

Change Text Size

The DP World Tour today announced its full 12-month schedule for the 2023 season, featuring a minimum of 39 tournaments in 26 countries, once again emphasizing its position as golf’s global Tour.

  • Record overall prize fund of $144.2 million for regular DP World Tour events next season
  • Increase in Rolex Series prize funds
  • Player Earnings Assurance Programme to be introduced

DP World Tour members will compete for an overall prize fund of $144.2 million across the tournaments outside the Major Championships and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play including an increased bonus pool of $6 million for the leading eight players on the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex.

As part of this record total prize fund, the 2023 season will also see the introduction of a new Earnings Assurance Programme for DP World Tour members.

Exempt players in categories 1-17 will be guaranteed minimum earnings of $150,000 if they compete in 15 or more events as part of the programme which was agreed by the DP World Tour’s Tournament Committee last week.

Both the record prize fund, increased bonus pool and Earnings Assurance Programme have been made possible by the DP World Tour’s operational joint venture partnership with the PGA TOUR which was announced in June.

Keith Pelley, the DP World Tour’s Chief Executive, said: “For us to be able to offer our members record prize funds and enhanced earning opportunities is massive, particularly when global economies are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and with the new challenge of rising inflation significantly putting pressure on costs in all facets of our business.

“Our overall prize fund for the 2023 season represents $50 million more than 2021 and also underlines the strength of our partnership with the PGA TOUR, who are working with us to drive revenue and a long-term growth plan.

“One of the many benefits we have been able to introduce because of this partnership is the new Earnings Assurance Programme, similar to what they already have on the PGA TOUR. I have always believed that it is an incredible accomplishment for any professional golfer to simply gain their playing rights on the DP World Tour and this new initiative recognizes and rewards that achievement.

“Although we will never lose the magic of the meritocracy and purity of a performance-based structure, this now offers certainty of income to those players who have made it to the pinnacle of the professional game in Europe.

“Alongside the John Jacobs Bursary for the top five players who graduate to the DP World Tour from the Challenge Tour, it will provide security and a strong platform for emerging players in particular as they come through the global pathways we have created.”

Included in the DP World Tour’s record prize fund of $144.2 million is an increase in the tournament prize funds for the first four Rolex Series events of 2023. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship all move from $8 million in 2022 to $9 million next year, ahead of the $10 million season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The DP World Tour’s global schedule begins on November 24, 2022, with a double header – the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane and the Joburg Open in South Africa. The former is one of two tournaments in Australia on the DP World Tour schedule as part of the Strategic Alliance with the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, while the latter is one of six events co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour, also as part of a strategic alliance.

Four new tournaments in Asia are also included on the 2023 schedule, with the Singapore Classic (February 9-12) and Thailand Classic (February 16-19) taking place in consecutive weeks, followed by the Tour’s first trip to Japan for the ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP (April 20-23) and a return to Korea for the first time since 2013 (April 27-30).

In Europe, there are dates changes for several tournaments, including the Horizon Irish Open moving to September 7-10, while the Italian Open will take place from May 4-7 ahead of venue Marco Simone Golf & Country Club hosting the 2023 Ryder Cup from September 29 – October 1.

There is also a new three-week summer break in the schedule following the 151st Open Championship and Barracuda Championship (both July 20-23) which has been introduced following player feedback. Further details about the autumn events will be announced in due course.

Though Europe gave the world the game of golf, for the past 75 years or so, professional golf on the continent has lived in the shadow of its brasher and younger American counterpart. The European Tour kicked off without much fanfare in 1972 with the Open de España at Pals Golf Club in Girona, Spain. But as more and more sponsors and destinations warmed to the idea of hosting events, and more top players signed up to play them, the European Tour’s stature grew. In 1982, it staged its first event outside of Europe—the Tunisian Open at El Kantaoui Golf Club in Tunisia—which was step one toward its dream of becoming a truly global tour.

Today, that dream is every bit a reality. The 2023–24 DP World Tour season takes competitors to 45 events in 24 countries. For players, that means a lot of traveling around. But it also means that they’ll have the privilege of playing some of the world’s very best golf courses—not just in Europe but in Australia, South Africa, Japan, and more.

Here’s a list of some of the top courses on the 2023-24 DP World Tour schedule . Check your frequent flyer miles and see how many of them you can score a tee time on.

Leopard Creek Country Club (Malelane, South Africa) — Alfred Dunhill Championship, Dec. 7–10, 2023 (won by Louis Oosthuizen)

Lots of golf courses are named after animals, but at this one, located on the southern outskirts of Kruger National Park, you may get a chance to see a few. And we’re not talking squirrels. The championship course here was designed by son of South Africa, Gary Player, in and amongst a series of lakes and streams that are populated by crocodiles and hippos—and sometimes visited by other African safari animals, including giraffes. The view from the 13th green, set high above the Crocodile River, is one you’ll remember forever. You’ll need to stay in an affiliated lodge to gain access to Leopard Creek, but if you do, you’ll be warmly welcomed and treated to a challenging round on a course with fast, undulating greens and excellent playing conditions. A bucket-list course, for sure.

leopard

Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea (Incheon, South Korea) — Korea Championship, April 18–21, 2024

If you watched the Presidents Cup in 2015, you’ll be familiar with the urban course Jack Nicklaus created here about an hour from Seoul near the shore of the East China Sea. The two nines are routed through an upscale housing development on land that’s mostly flat—but the course is anything but featureless. Nicklaus included several risk/reward holes in his design (including all the par fives), and more than half the holes feature water hazards of one kind or another, as at the excellent par-four 14th, where the fairway is bisected by a creek. You’ll need to avoid or carry water on all the par threes, too. It’s not the most scenic course the DP Tour pros will play, but its design is one will test and delight players of every ability.

dp world tour

Taiheiyo Club, Gotemba Course (Gotemba, Japan) — ISPS HANDA – Championship, April 25–28, 2024

One of 17 courses operated by Japan’s Taiheiyo Club, the Gotemba Course opened in 1977, but was updated in 2018 by Rees Jones and Bryce Swanson, with pro tips supplied by 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama. A hilly, tree-lined course that’s maintained like a garden, Gotemba provides spectacular views of Mount Fuji. But you’d be advised to keep your mind on your game here, as the design team added closely mown areas around many greens, shifted bunkers, and reshaped the putting surfaces to make them more subtle and create more usable hole locations. Every hole has its own personality, and there’s not a weak one in the bunch.

dp world tour

Green Eagle Golf Courses, Porsche North Course (Hamburg, Germany) — European Open, May 30–June 2, 2024

Green Eagle’s Porsche North Course is widely considered the most difficult course in Germany, and it was created to be just that. Stretching to more than 7,800 yards from the tips, it’s the longest course DP World Tour players will take on in 2024. But there are four sets of tees on each hole, so don’t let its length deter you from visiting. If you go, make sure you bring enough balls, though. There’s water in some form pinching fairways and narrowing greens on 17 holes. Green Eagle has a more player-friendly South Course, too. Play them both—but don’t miss the chance to take on the Porsche North Course. If nothing else, you’ll quickly understand why the winning score by Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin in 2023 was just 9-under-par.

green eagle

Vasatorps Golfklubb, Tournament Course (Helsingborg, Sweden) — Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed, June 6–9, 2024

Sweden’s Vasatorps Golfklubb is nothing new to championship golf. After its original course opened in 1974, it hosted several European Tour events, which were won by the likes of Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman. The Tournament Course that a field of mixed pros will take on in June at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed event is a 2008 redesign consisting of nine holes from the original course and nine new ones, courtesy of Steve Forrest. The two nines are quite different. The front (and older) nine is tree-lined, with fairways routed through tall oaks and pines, while Forrest’s new nine is more open with containment mounds providing definition. It’s a course full of variety and surprises, with water, bunkers, waste areas, and stone walls all coming into play.

The Renaissance Club (North Berwick, Scotland) — Genesis Scottish Open, July 11–14, 2024

Who says Americans can’t design great links golf courses? Tom Doak did the honors at The Renaissance Club, which occupies hallowed land just down the lane from Archerfield and adjacent to Muirfield. They had to clear a lot of trees to create this private modern links, and they left a few. But it’s links golf on firm and fast turf, and the original course was made even stronger thanks to a land exchange with Muirfield that allowed the club to add three new seaside holes to its routing. The new 10th, a skinny par four that tiptoes along a cliff, is a particularly dramatic hole when the Scottish Open is played here.

renaissance

Tahoe Mountain Club, Old Greenwood (Truckee, Calif.) — Barracuda Championship, July 18–21, 2024

It wouldn’t be a true world tour if it didn’t play an event in the United States, right? Technically, the DP World Tour will award points at several U.S. events, including the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and another July event whose location is still TBD. The Barracuda Championship that will be played on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Old Greenwood course at Tahoe Mountain Club is a PGA Tour event that will also award DP World Tour points in 2024. The course is massive—set on 600 acres of pine-covered hills just west of Lake Tahoe—so your day will be spent in the wild. Nicklaus is up to his usual tricks here, with greens set at diagonals, par threes calling for accurate shots over water, risk/reward opportunities that come with high risk, and tiered greens that make you pay if you’re on the wrong tier. Save some strength for the long, uphill finishing hole, which features bunkers both left and right off the tee—and more bunkers in front of and behind the undulating green.

tahoe

The Belfry, The Brabazon Course (Sutton Coldfield, England) — Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, Aug. 29–Sept. 1, 2024

The Belfry’s most notable course, The Brabazon, has hosted four Ryder Cups, including in 1985 when Sam Torrance holed Europe’s winning putt and 2002 when Paul McGinley wielded the final dagger. It’s no gem from a golf course design standpoint, but it’s a fun parkland course to play—especially if you’re familiar with the Ryder Cup heroics that took place on so many of its holes. Of these, the 10th is probably the most famous—and the most fun. It’s a reachable (295 yards) par four calling for a soft fade over a pond to a narrow, kidney-shaped green. Both Torrance and Seve Ballesteros drove the green in those 1985 matches; almost every visitor who steps onto the tee tries to do the same.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Belfry Hotel & Resort (@thebelfryhotelandresort)

Royal County Down Golf Club (Newcastle, Northern Ireland) — Amgen Irish Open, Sept. 12–15, 2024

Devotees of links golf will know that Royal County Down is one of the most revered links tracks in the world. Its setting in the shadows of Slieve Donard and the Mountains of Mourne, with panoramic views of the Irish Sea from several spots, is dramatic all by itself. But it’s the Old Tom Morris-designed Championship Links (modified by Harry Colt in the 1920s) that’s the real star. When you tee off at the first hole, you set off on an adventure in the dunes, with blind shots, hairy-lipped bunkers, and greens well protected by deep sand pits and sharp runoffs. The 9th hole offers the best view on the course, and it’s one of the course’s finest, with its tee shot over the crest of a hill and second shot past the corner of a sentinel dune to a green protected by bunkers both left and right. People will debate whether Royal Portrush is a better course, but it’s a fool’s discussion. Play them both and count yourself lucky.

opening par fives

Yas Links (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) — Abu Dhabi Championship, Nov. 7–10, 2024

Widely considered one the best courses in the Middle East (if not the best course in the Middle East), Yas Links is one of those rare tracks that calls itself a links and lives up to its name. The course was designed by Kyle Phillips, creator of Scotland’s Kingsbarns , and it shares many attributes with its Scotland and Ireland forbears. It’s situated near the F1 circuit and Ferrari World theme park on Yas Island, and the course is every bit as exhilarating as they are. It plays like a true links and has the look and feel of a true links, with seven holes along the shore, pot bunkers, fescue grass rough, tumbling fairways, and even a double green akin to those at St. Andrews. Yas Links stretches to over 7,500 yards and its finish is particularly strong, but you’ll know from the outset that you’re in for a special day.

10 Things You Didn't Know About The DP World Tour

Here are 10 things you may not be familiar with about the Europe-based circuit

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

The DP World Tour flag

The DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) is one of the most well-regarded and established circuits in the game, with some of the best-known tournaments around, including the Dubai Desert Classic and its flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship.

While it doesn't boast the same status as the US-based PGA Tour, it still forms an integral part of the game's professional landscape. Here are some facts about the Tour that you may not be familiar with.

1. The roots of the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) go back to 1972, when the Professional Golfers' Association, which was established 71 years earlier to serve the interests of golfers in Great Britain and Ireland, created it.

2. It began with 20 tournaments and the season ran from April to October. The action took place in nine countries – Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Switzerland, West Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.

3. The inaugural European Tour event was the Spanish Open, which was held at Golf Club de Pals in Girona. Fittingly, two Spaniards battled it out for the title in a playoff, with Antonio Garrido emerging the winner over Valentin Barrios. The purse for the tournament was £10,000.

4. Nowadays, DP World Tour events take place around the world, but it was strictly a Europe-only affair for the first decade of its existence. That changed in 1982 with the first tournament to be played outside the continent – the Tunisian Open in Africa. Garrido once again claimed the title after beating compatriot Manuel Calero in a playoff.

6. Some of the highest-profile DP World Tour events take place in Asia, but it wasn’t until 1989 that the continent hosted one of its events with the inaugural Dubai Desert Classic (then called the Karl Litten Desert Classic). The tournament was won by Mark James, who beat Peter O’Malley by four shots to claim the $75,000 first prize.

7. In 2015, including Majors and World Golf Championships, more of the DP World Tour’s tournaments were held outside Europe than within it for the first time.

8. In 1998, The Masters, PGA Championship and US Open were added to the schedule, meaning prize money earned by players in the Majors could be added to the European Tour’s Order of Merit, which affected the end-of-season rankings. Not only that, but with a minimum requirement of 11 appearances needed for players to retain membership of the Tour, the addition of the Majors – along with three World Golf Championships in 1990 – made it easier for players to reach that target.

9. Seve Ballesteros holds the record for the highest number of DP World Tour wins with 50, eight more than Bernhard Langer in second place. Ballesteros’ first win on the Tour came in the 1976 Dutch Open, with the last in his homeland at the 1995 Spanish Open.

Seve Ballesteros holds the record for most European Tour wins, with the last of 50 coming in the 1995 Spanish Open

10. The total prize money for the inaugural season of the Tour (excluding Majors) was £290,500. Adjusted for inflation, that would be £3.3m today (around $4m). In 2024, the prize fund will be $148.5m (approximately £121.5m).

Despite greens running almost at 14, this dp world tour pro tied a course record and shares the lead in south africa, share this article.

With big names like Louis Oosthuizen and Dylan Frittelli looming in the field, Ockie Strydom wanted to make sure to get off to a fast start during Saturday’s third round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Country Golf Club in South Africa.

When he looked at the Stimpmeter before starting his round, he knew fast was exactly how the day would play out.

“When I saw it on the first tee box 13 — I think it was 13.7 or something — I was like, OK, here we go,” said Strydom, a South African who entered the week ranked No. 384 in the Official World Golf Ranking. “And luckily on the first, I had a downhill putt to get a hang of it and I ran it about four feet past. So the greens are there, and you’ve just got to make it and just go with the speed.”

And go he did — kickstarted by an eagle on the second hole, Strydom made the turn at 29 en route to a 9-under 63 that pushed him to 15 under for the tournament and in a tie with Scott Jamieson. And while Strydom tied the course record, it’s the second 63 to be fired in 24 hours — Jamieson did the same during Saturday’s second round. The course, known for its stunning visuals , has played easy all week, despite the quick conditions.

Three other players, including Dean Burmester are two shots back at 13 under while Frittelli and Branden Grace are part of a trio at 12 under.

The DP World Tour just made big-time changes — here are the 13 biggest

  • Follow on Twitter
  • Follow on Instagram

The DP World Tour will look — and pay — slightly different this upcoming season.

Getty Images

One year into its title sponsorship, the phrase “DP World Tour” still takes some getting used to. The artist formerly known as the European Tour has a long and storied history, after all, which means the rebranded circuit will take some time to enter golf’s lexicon. Even the tour’s website has one foot in the past; type in “dpworldtour.com” and you’ll get redirected to “europeantour.com”. But Thursday’s schedule announcement for the 2023 season made one thing clear: This ain’t your dad’s European Tour.

The new schedule is emphasizing the “World” in DP World Tour; its 39 events will take place across 26 countries and, counting its co-sanctioned events, five continents. By the time the circuit actually tees it up in continental Europe — in May, for the Italian Open — it will have contested nearly 20 events.

How is this year different? New tournaments. More money. Guaranteed money. Strategic alliances left and right. Some sites have vanished. Others have shifted. There’s even a miniature summer vacation! This was the DP World Tour’s first big announcement since LIV vs. the PGA Tour began occupying the entirety of the golf world’s collective consciousness. And it feels like a step forward.

Here are 13 significant changes that will (hopefully) help make sense of the new schedule.

1. They’re playing for more money.

The first four Rolex Series events of 2023 — the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship — will all now feature $9 million prize pots, up from $8 million a year ago, building to the $10 million season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

While LIV and the PGA Tour have engaged in an arms race featuring significantly more financial firepower than the DP World can muster, the uptick in prize money signals something important to its players and sponsors: stability. The $144 million in purses is $50 million higher than 2021, when it rebooted post-pandemic.

In the schedule release, DP World Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley pointed to the circuit’s financial standing as evidence of a successful (if much-scrutinized) alliance with the PGA Tour, citing the “strength of our partnership with the PGA Tour, who are working with us to drive revenue and a long-term growth plan.”

2. The top guys get more money, too.

An extra $6 million will be available for the leading eight players, thanks to a Rolex sponsorship. The PGA Tour has FedEx, the DP World Tour has Rolex. Players are glad for both.

The top 10 players on the money list will also earn PGA Tour cards, strengthening the connection between the circuits — although critics have claimed the relationship makes the DP World Tour essentially a “feeder tour” to the PGA Tour. But that’s the reality of the situation; the PGA Tour outpaces the DP World in money and top talent, so there’s still plenty to be gained from the relationship.

3. There’s a guaranteed money floor.

The new “Earnings Assurance Programme” mimics a similar model on the PGA Tour and guarantees that exempt players who play at least 15 events on the DP World Tour will pocket a minimum of $150,000 at the end of the season. In other words, if a player has played in 15 events and made $80,000 by the end of the season, the DP World Tour will pay an extra $70,000.

Rookies, Challenge Tour graduates and Q-School graduates can take up to $20,000 right away to fund “long-haul early season travel.” That will be an advance against future earnings. Partial members will also get $1500 on weeks they miss the cut to assist with travel costs and tournament-related expenses.

“I have always believed that it is an incredible accomplishment for any professional golfer to simply gain their playing rights on the DP World Tour and this new initiative recognizes and rewards that achievement,” Pelley said in the release.

4. There are strategic alliances everywhere.

Everywhere! While the MENA Tour earns no mention in the DP World’s release, the DP does trumpet its strategic alliances with the PGA Tour, the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Sunshine Tour. Life is better with friends. That gets us to the schedule, which begins with…

5. A mini Australian Swing.

Two events Down Under have been added to the DP World calendar: the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship (Nov. 24-27) at Royal Queensland in Brisbane, marking the beginning of the new season, and the ISPS Handa Australian Open (Dec. 1-4) at Kingston Heath in Melbourne. The alliance is paying dividends already!

6. Then there’s a South African Swing.

This begins in parallel with the Australian events; the Joburg Open is Nov. 24-27, too, kicking off three consecutive events in South Africa followed by the Mauritius Open. There will also be a secondary swing through the Mother Continent in March, with the Magical Kenya Open followed by two more events in South Africa.

7. The new year begins with a Ryder Cup tune-up.

That would be the Hero Cup , a new team match-play event that will kick off the 2023 calendar year for the DP World Tour and is set to take place at Abu Dhabi Golf Club Jan. 13-15.

A 10-man team from Great Britain and Ireland will take on a 10-man team from Continental Europe with the goal of blooding competitors for the Ryder Cup come September 2023. Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald will preside over the event, which will consist of three days of match-play competition.

8. Then comes an enriched Desert Swing.

The stroke-play portion of the season begins the following week at Yas Links, also in Abu Dhabi, the first of the year’s $9 million Rolex Series events. That’s followed by another $9 million Rolex Series event, the Dubai Desert Classic, before the swing wraps up at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, by which point some of the big names will have jetted back to the PGA Tour while the DP World regulars compete for a more typical $2 million purse.

9. A brand-new Asian Swing features four new events.

Mostly new, at least. The Singapore Classic, Thailand Classic and Hero Indian Open taking us through the end of Feburary. Two more Asian events — the ISPS Handa in Japan and another event in South Korea — will take place at the end of April. In total the DP World Tour has added four new events in Asia.

10. And then there’s the classic European Summer Swing.

See what I mean when I say this isn’t just the “European Tour” anymore? We’ve made it through April without setting foot in Europe. But once you hit May the DP World has essentially six uninterrupted months of the tournaments the tour is best known for. Get ready to trek through Italy (for a Ryder Cup preview) and on to Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, England, Denmark, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ireland and France, which will take us into the Ryder Cup back in Italy again.

11. There’s a summer break.

This is an intriguing wrinkle; there’s a three-week break after the Open Championship (which wraps July 23) before the next DP World Tour event kicks off on Aug. 17. For reference, that break lines up with the final two events of the PGA Tour’s regular season — the 3M Open and Wyndham Championship — and its first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

There aren’t many breaks, that’s for sure. And while future versions of the schedule — 2024 and on — are likely to have additional breaks, this current version really emphasizes the word “tour,” too. These guys will be barnstorming all over the place.

12. The Irish Open has a new slot on the schedule.

In recent years the Irish Open has bounced around the summer months, and as a result its biggest potential draw, Rory McIlroy, hasn’t always been able to participate. This year the Irish Open moves to a new slot on the schedule, Sept. 7-10, putting it two weeks after the PGA Tour wraps up its season at East Lake. While he hasn’t said anything about the new date, it certainly seems plausible that McIlroy — and other European stars including Irishmen Shane Lowry and Seamus Power — would play the Irish Open and the BMW PGA back-to-back and then have a week off before the Ryder Cup in Italy.

13. Valderrama seems…out.

This isn’t official official, but you can pretty much bet the farm that LIV has planted its flag on Valderrama’s turf and that the DP World Tour won’t be returning next October. And while the Spanish Open is in its spot on the schedule for Oct. 12-15 (making it likely that Jon Rahm, like McIlroy, will be able to play his national open) there are three open weeks after that with just “TBC” written on the DP World Tour’s schedule.

I’m not sure if TBC means “to be confirmed” or “to be continued.” Either way, that seems like the right note to end on.

The rest of the schedule’s below.

Rory McIlroy and Nicolai Hojgaard walked away the big winners from this week's DP World Tour Championship. McIlroy won the overall points title for the fifth time while Hojgaard was the winner of the Tour Championship with a 21-under total.

David Cannon

An already memorable 2023 season on the DP World Tour for Nicolai Hojgaard—in which he played in his first Ryder Cup—got even more so on Sunday at the DP World Tour Championship. The 22-year-old Dane closed out the final round at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai with a eight-under 64 to charge past overnight leader Matt Wallace and claim victory with a 21-under 267 performance, two shots better than Wallace, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.

Hojgaard’s victory is the third of his career on the DP World Tour but his most lucrative. The first-place prize money payout was worth $3 million from an overall purse of $10.5 million. The payday from Sunday (€2,764,461 in Euros) amounts to more than 40 percent his entire career earnings to date on the DP World Tour (€6,380,134.75).

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer who competed in the DP World Tour’s season finale.

The three-stage competition culminates at INFINITUM from November 10-15, where 156 players will compete over six rounds in a bid to fulfil their DP World Tour dreams.

The Final Stage will consist of six rounds with each player playing two rounds at the Lakes Course and two at the Hills Course at INFINITUM, before a cut is made.

The top 70 and ties will then play the final two rounds at the Lakes Course, competing for the final 25 cards.

What is at stake?

The top 25 and ties will earn DP World Tour playing privileges for 2024, while the others who make the cut will earn a full Challenge Tour card.

For some, it's the chance to earn back status after finishing outside of the top 116 on the Race to Dubai. For others, it's about trying to earn a rookie season on the DP World Tour.

Who is playing?

There are a whole host of recognisable faces hoping to regain their playing rights and others seeking their first season all teeing up at Final Stage this week.

England’s Tom Lewis, a two-time winner on the DP World Tour, comes from the Challenge Tour Grand Finals along with the likes of Darren Fichardt and Steven Brown.

The star studded field also features a raft of past DP World Tour winners, including David Howell, Alex Levy, John Catlin, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Marc Warren, Alvaro Quiros, Renato Paratore, Joachim B. Hansen, Kristoffer Broberg, Oliver Fisher, Grégory Havret and Richard McEvoy - who won Final Stage in 2013.

As well as seasoned professionals, young hopefuls are also aiming to seize playing privileges for 2024 that made their way to Final Stage either through the Challenge Tour or through First or Second Stage.. Frenchman Martin Couvra won as an amateur on the Challenge Tour this season before turning professional, and he’ll be aiming for a spot in the top 25, as will Zimbabwean Benjamin Follett-Smith who narrowly missed out on earning promotion to the DP World Tour at last week’s Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A. Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen is looking to finish an impressive debut season that included two top five finishes on the Challenge Tour, finished tied seventh in the BMW International Open and tied 22nd in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last month on the DP World Tour.

Elsewhere, John Axelsen, David Ravetto, Pedro Figueiredo, Sam Hutsby and Garrick Porteous are all in the field trying to earn one of the top 25 cards for a second consecutive year.

INFINITUM, formerly known as Lumine Golf, will host Final Stage of DP World Tour Qualifying School for a fifth time this week, having previously staged the event from 2017-2019 and again in 2022 as Swede Simon Forsström secured a two-stroke victory to become one of 28 players to earn their DP World Tour cards.

The Lakes and The Hills are the two courses which will be played this week, and present two very diffierent challenges. The Lakes course surrounds the lakes and the Sèquia Major wetlands, one of the most important ecosystems in the region, while The Hills course is played between natural pine trees and cliffs, with panoramic sea views.

The resort as a whole surfaces is one of Europe’s most highly-sought after lifestyle and leisure experiences, with world-class golf, modern gastronomy, off-course activities, and a contemporary beach club featuring state-of-the-art facilities, including eight swimming pools, a Tapas Bar, and one of Costa Daurada’s best restaurants.

Sustainability is also at the forefront of INFINITUM resort. All irrigation water comes from the desalination plant, which collects and treats water from neighbouring towns before recycling it. The plant operators receive specialized training to manage the complex treatment process. This system provides significant environmental benefits, as it reduces the discharge of pollutants into the sea. INFINITUM has obtained prestigious environmental certifications, such as the Gold Signature from Audubon and GEO, which require maintaining high environmental standards in all operations.

The Lakes golf course is located within a protected natural area, and to preserve it, the resort controls the use of phytosanitary products on its golf courses. Using recycled water from the desalination plant reduces the resort’s water consumption and contributes to environmental conservation. INFINITUM demonstrates a commitment to responsible and sustainable practices, benefiting the resort and surrounding ecosystems.

Infinitum Q School home

Since the inaugural contest in 1976, DP World Tour Qualifying School has proved itself to be a breeding ground that has resulted in a host of Major Champions, World Number Ones and Ryder Cup players.

Colin Montgomerie, Sandy Lyle, Justin Rose and Miguel Ángel Jiménez are just a few European greats to make it through ‘golf’s toughest test’ before going on to taste glory on the world stage.

In 2023, five Qualifying School Graduates earned victories on the DP World Tour. Marcel Siem was the first player to win at the Hero Indian Open, before Nick Bachem stormed to a four-shot victory at the Jonsson Workwear Open. Two months later Simon Forsström, winner of Final Stage last year, earned his maiden Tour title at the Soudal Open. Dan Brown then claimed his first DP World Tour title with a five-stroke triumph at the ISPS Handa World Invitational in August, before Ryo Hisatsune won the Cazoo Open de France in September.

Scottie Scheffler arrested by police before second round

World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler was charged with assaulting a police officer outside Valhalla Golf Club hours before starting his second round at the 2024 PGA Championship.

Scheffler — who was also charged with third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic — was released by police just in time to take to the course for his tee-off time of 10:08am ET. He impressed with a five-under round of 66 that moved him into third, at nine-under for the tournament.

The Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections, who posted a mugshot of the 27-year-old, said he was booked in at 7.28am local time and released at 8.40am. Scheffler later described the incident as “a big misunderstanding”.

The start of Friday’s second round was delayed by 80 minutes because of an unrelated crash near the course . Louisville police said a shuttle bus had struck and killed a pedestrian outside the golf club. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg later named him as local man John Mills.

PGA Championship contender Robert MacIntyre credits ‘happy Bob’ mindset for good golf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Robert MacIntyre is used to making on-the-fly adjustments, ones that have brought him to this moment — tied for fourth at the PGA Championship after shooting a 5-under-par 66 on Thursday.

The left-handed golfer grew up battling the swirling gusts customary to his hometown of Oban in the Scottish Highlands. He dominated Scotland’s amateur scene on the best links courses in the world, where failure to acclimate to changing conditions can drive you into the ground. But this week — as he plays the PGA Championship as a PGA Tour member for the first time — MacIntyre is facing his biggest adjustment yet.

MacIntyre earned his PGA Tour card after a successful 2023 DP World Tour season (formerly the European Tour). But since picking up his bags and establishing a base in Orlando, Fla., to play in the tour full time, MacIntyre has been open about the fact he’s struggling to adapt to his new lifestyle. He’s chasing his dream of winning major championships, but the day-to-day inner workings of that effort are not what he expected.

The weeks are long. The stakes are high. Many players keep to themselves. The environment is a stark contrast to MacIntyre’s experience on the DP World Tour, and it’s not just because he’s playing new golf courses with foreign strains of grass. His European peers like to chat. The Americans, in his experience, don’t. Swing coaches, psychologists and trainers accompany their players to practice sessions and dinners. On the DP World Tour, everyone is in it together. Time on the road felt like home away from home for MacIntyre. So far, the PGA Tour has been far from that.

Scottie Scheffler is in a fight at this PGA Championship. It’s the best thing for golf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In case anyone had forgotten how dominant he has been this season, Scottie Scheffler wasted little time reminding them Thursday at Valhalla Golf Club. The world’s top-ranked player returned from a three-week absence, drove his tee shot down the right side of the No. 1 fairway, then launched a ball 167 yards to the green, where it bounced once and dropped into the bottom of the cup for an eagle.

As the gallery roared at the 106th PGA Championship, Scheffler slapped hands with his caddie Ted Scott. A slight smirk crept across his face, as if to say, “Can you believe it?” Only there’s no reason to not believe it when it comes to Scheffler, whose dominance has been so complete since March that the story can be told without saying a word. Just listen to the pauses and sighs that precede most of the comments when opponents are asked about his play.

Scottie Scheffler finishes his first round with a 4-under 67.

It is the sixth time Scheffler has gained five-plus shots on the field tee-to-green in a major championship round since the beginning of 2022.

No other player in that span has more than three such rounds.

Rahm rallies, shoots 1-under-par

Jon Rahm today:

First 12 holes: 3 over, -2.50 strokes gained putting.

Last six holes: 4 under, +1.14 strokes gained putting.

Rahm finishes with a 1-under 70.

Tom Kim shoots 66

Tom Kim (66 today, age 21) is the youngest player to begin a PGA Championship with 66 or better since Sergio Garcia opened with 66 in 1999 at age 19.

Scheffler birdies 15

After a three-putt bogey on the par-3 14th, Scottie Scheffler responds with a birdie on 15.

The champions know how to follow up bogeys with birdies.

Scheffler is 4-under-par with three holes to play.

Tom Hoge shoots 66

Eight birdies today for Tom Hoge

His previous career-high in a major championship round was just five.

Currently leading the field in average proximity to the hole.

Scheffler 3-putt bogey on 14

Scottie at 3-under-par

After birdieing No. 13, Scottie Scheffler with a three-putt bogey on the 14th.

Scheffler falls back to 3-under-par, six back of leader Xander Schauffele.

Tom Kim in the mix

One year ago at the PGA Championship, Tom Kim famously fell into a muddy creek at Oak Hill, becoming one of the buzzy moments of the major.

One year later, Kim is in the mix near the top of the leaderboard at Valhalla.

Kim is 5-under-par through 13 holes, having one of the rounds of the day in the afternoon wave.

It's been an adventurous first round for Jon Rahm at the PGA Championship.

Golfers under par at the PGA Championship

There are currently 64 players under par at Valhalla Golf Club.

The most players under par after round one of the PGA Championship is 60 (2006 at Medinah).

Wyndham Clark responds after an opening bogey

After bogeying his first hole of the PGA Championship, Wyndham Clark responded with birdies on holes 4, 7 and 8.

Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, is with a plethora of golfers at 2-under-par.

Brian Harman's relief on No. 7

This type of relief being awarded to any PGA Tour player, much less in a major, is just baffling to me. I just don’t buy that the cart path was in play at all. And it slowed down what is already a slow group, as Harman hesitated over the initial lie and then brought in a rules official.

On a side note, perfect touch for ESPN production to drop a “PGA Jr. League” graphic onto the screen. Because nothing will get kids into this game quite like a grown man dropping a ball from his knee.

Thomas Detry 4 under through 9

Among the golfers in the afternoon wave, Thomas Detry is having a stellar start.

Playing the back side first, Detry is 4 under through his first nine holes, which includes birdies at 17 and 18.

Detry is five off the lead making the turn.

McIlroy keeping it tight (-lipped)

McIlroy keeping it tight (-lipped)

Rory McIlroy, a man known for being physically incapable of not giving his thoughts on things, has turned questions that even so much as acknowledge outside issues into non-answers.

💬 "I'm ready to play this week."

💬 "It's always nice to be inside the ropes."

💬 "Happy to be here."

It's already a long way back

That is just an absolutely disastrous beginning for Jon Rahm, who as you've seen is 4-over through six holes.

The 2023 Masters champion and 2021 U.S. Open winner has bogeyed 2, 4, 5 and 6. Keep in mind that while three of the four are playing over par today, the par-4 4th has a 3.84 scoring average and is a definite birdie opportunity.

Even if it's a difficult opening stretch, to drop strokes on all four just cannot be done if you are to make any sort of run at this thing.

Right now Rahm is tied for 141st out of 156 people in the field, knotted up with names like Ryan van Velzen and Takumi Kanaya.

T142: Jon RAHM (+4) +4 thru 6

Goodness me, what a horrible day it's been already for Jon Rahm.

The Spaniard is on a run of three consecutive bogeys and has actually dropped shots at four of his first six holes.

The opportunities are there to claw the shots back - but only if you're in the form to take them.

Xander Schauffele leads the PGA Championship. But can he finish the job?

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This didn’t change your mind at all, did it? You knew Xander Schauffele would be here. You knew he’d play Round 1 at the PGA Championship well. Because when you’re a golf-playing robot, when there’s no difference in your mind between Thursday and Sunday, there’s zero doubt you’ll be right in the mix at a major.

This is why Schauffele does deserve your respect, why he’s been the second-best golfer in the world on paper. Schauffele does not have bad weeks. He hasn’t finished outside the top 25 since February. He hasn’t been outside the top 20 in a major since April 2022. The only person with more top-10s than Schauffele (8) is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (9). And Thursday at Valhalla, Schauffele shot a course-record 62 to remind everyone of what Schauffele really is: A great golfer.

Yet none of it means a damn thing to you, does it?

It won’t until he does it on Sunday. No matter how many times you’re told how great Schauffele is, how consistent he is or how many times he’s finished toward the top of the FedEx Cup standings, you won’t treat him like one of the best golfers of his era until you see him on a Sunday, on the biggest stages, staring down his peers and holding on for a win.

Read more about Schauffele's round here .

Xander Schauffele leads the PGA Championship. But can he finish the job?

Scheffler drops a shot

After a 3-under-par start, Scottie Scheffler bogeys the par-4 5th hole after finding the right greenside bunker.

Scheffler is 2 under for the tournament, seven back of leader Xander Schauffele.
