DEERFIELD, Ill., April 21, 2014 - Further expanding the scope of convenient, preventive health care services provided by its community pharmacists, Walgreens (NYSE: WAG) (NASDAQ: WAG) is now offering expanded travel health services, including immunizations and consultations 1 , to support nearly 60 million annual planned trips by U.S. residents outside the country 2 .

Appointments are available with pharmacists specially trained in travel health, who can advise patients traveling abroad on required or recommended immunizations, prescription refills and over-the-counter medications, and destination-specific information including any known health or safety risks. Walgreens specially trained pharmacists can also administer CDC-recommended travel immunizations such as yellow fever, typhoid and polio vaccines 3 .

Travel immunizations are widely available at more than 5,000 Walgreens stores in 41 states. Full travel consultations, which can include immunizations and other services, are currently offered at 1,500 locations.

“Our pharmacists frequently interact with patients as they plan travel, and this is another way we can provide personalized services to help them best prepare and stay well while abroad,” said Jack Cantlin, Walgreens divisional vice president, retail clinical services. “In addition to immunizations, there’s a lot of pertinent health information people need when traveling to other parts of the world. By expanding our travel health services and spending more time with patients, Walgreens can serve as a convenient resource for all international travel needs.”

Prices for consultations vary and start at $19.99.

Travelers can also schedule an appointment for travel immunization only. Walgreens suite of travel immunizations includes:

  • Hepatitis A and B

Travel Immunizations: Prices may vary

If you need travel immunizations, UHealth Clinic at Walgreens lets you get them on your schedule at a location near you – with many locations throughout South Florida.

Japanese encephalitis

Typhoid vaccine.

Japanese encephalitis is an infection caused by a virus and spread through bites from infected mosquitoes. It doesn't spread between people. Typically, it doesn't cause symptoms, but it can cause a fever or headache. But it can lead to brain infection (encephalitis), seizures, coma, permanent disability, or death.

If you're visiting rural parts of Asia, talk to your provider to find out if vaccination is right for you. Although the risk is low for travelers, you may need vaccination if you're traveling for long periods – and unprotected from mosquitoes – in areas where the disease is present.

If you need the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, UHealth Clinic at Walgreens provides trusted care from experienced providers, with same-day appointments for your convenience. The vaccine requires two doses spaced four weeks apart. Your last dose must be at least a week before travel, so be sure to make your first appointment at least a month in advance.

Polio vaccine

Polio (poliomyelitis) is a contagious disease caused by a virus spread through close contact with someone who's infected or contaminated food or water. It enters an infected person's spinal cord and brain and can cause paralysis and death. All children should receive four doses of the vaccine by the time they're 6. Most adults have already been vaccinated as children, but you may need a booster shot if you're traveling to certain parts of the world where there's a risk of getting infected.

You can get the polio vaccine at UHealth Clinic at Walgreens. Our providers learn about your health history and travel plans to determine what’s right for you. The inactivated polio vaccine is given as a shot in the arm or leg, depending on your age. If you’re traveling with young children, our providers can recommend a vaccine schedule to make sure your child is protected. You get trusted, expert advice to keep your family healthy.

Rabies is a disease caused by a virus that's spread through the saliva of infected animals. You can get the disease an infected animal bites you. Wild animals – like bats, foxes, and monkeys – pets, and even farm animals like horses and cows can spread rabies. It’s a life-threatening disease and needs treatment right away. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you’re up to date on your rabies vaccine.

It’s particularly important to get a rabies vaccine if you’re traveling. A bite from a stray dog or another infected animal can be serious – particularly if you’re in areas where it’s difficult to get medical care.

You can get a rabies shot at UHealth Clinic at Walgreens at locations across South Florida. You can get a same-day appointment when it’s convenient for you, including evening appointments. Our providers know the latest travel vaccination recommendations to make sure you have all the immunizations you need before traveling.

Typhoid fever is a contagious disease caused by bacteria. It’s common in South Asia, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It's spread through contaminated food and water or close contact with someone who has the disease. It causes a high fever, headache, stomach pain, and constipation. It's treated with antibiotics, but it's life-threatening without treatment.

You can get a typhoid vaccine at UHealth Clinic at Walgreens conveniently at one of our many South Florida locations. We offer two types of typhoid fever vaccines:

  • Oral Typhoid prevention medication is available to people 6 and older. You need to take four doses every other day and finish taking all the pills at least a week before travel.
  • Injectable vaccines can be given to people 2 and older. You need to have your shot at least two weeks before you travel.

Vaccines aren't 100% effective, but they lower your risk of getting typhoid fever. Also, vaccines lose their effectiveness over time, so you may need a booster if you haven't been vaccinated for a few years.

Your provider will let you know which vaccine is right for you. Make sure you make your appointment two or more weeks before you plan to travel to ensure it has enough time to take effect.

Questions? We're here to help.

UHealth nurse practitioners provide expert care and can prescribe medications and antivirals to get you back on your feet.

Vaccines for Travelers

Vaccines protect travelers from serious diseases. Depending on where you travel, you may come into contact with diseases that are rare in the United States, like yellow fever. Some vaccines may also be required for you to travel to certain places.

Getting vaccinated will help keep you safe and healthy while you’re traveling. It will also help make sure that you don’t bring any serious diseases home to your family, friends, and community.

On this page, you'll find answers to common questions about vaccines for travelers.

Which vaccines do I need before traveling?

The vaccines you need to get before traveling will depend on few things, including:

  • Where you plan to travel . Some countries require proof of vaccination for certain diseases, like yellow fever or polio. And traveling in developing countries and rural areas may bring you into contact with more diseases, which means you might need more vaccines before you visit.
  • Your health . If you’re pregnant or have an ongoing illness or weakened immune system, you may need additional vaccines.
  • The vaccinations you’ve already had . It’s important to be up to date on your routine vaccinations. While diseases like measles are rare in the United States, they are more common in other countries. Learn more about routine vaccines for specific age groups .

How far in advance should I get vaccinated before traveling?

It’s important to get vaccinated at least 4 to 6 weeks before you travel. This will give the vaccines time to start working, so you’re protected while you’re traveling. It will also usually make sure there’s enough time for you to get vaccines that require more than 1 dose.

Where can I go to get travel vaccines?

Start by finding a:

  • Travel clinic
  • Health department
  • Yellow fever vaccination clinic

Learn more about where you can get vaccines .

What resources can I use to prepare for my trip?

Here are some resources that may come in handy as you’re planning your trip:

  • Visit CDC’s travel website to find out which vaccines you may need based on where you plan to travel, what you’ll be doing, and any health conditions you have.
  • Download CDC's TravWell app to get recommended vaccines, a checklist to help prepare for travel, and a personalized packing list. You can also use it to store travel documents and keep a record of your medicines and vaccinations.
  • Read the current travel notices to learn about any new disease outbreaks in or vaccine recommendations for the areas where you plan to travel.
  • Visit the State Department’s website to learn about vaccinations, insurance, and medical emergencies while traveling.

Traveling with a child? Make sure they get the measles vaccine.

Measles is still common in some countries. Getting your child vaccinated will protect them from getting measles — and from bringing it back to the United States where it can spread to others. Learn more about the measles vaccine.

What Costco's Travel Immunization Service Offers You

S o you've finally booked your bucket-list trip — an all-inclusive safari in Kenya. You imagine the lush flora and distinctive fauna against the vibrant landscapes. You've borrowed your friend's professional camera lens so you can capture many epic images. You know you're going to need plenty of sunscreen and bug spray, and you've stocked up on linen clothing to keep you cool.

But what about your health needs? Some countries won't allow you to bring in prescription drugs like Ambien or Adderall, while others have banned Benadryl or Sudafed (via Reader's Digest ). According to Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention , some countries like Kenya require a yellow fever vaccination. If you're traveling abroad, it might seem overwhelming to try to figure out what you'll need to keep you healthy on your trip . To identify which shots or medications are recommended for your destination, you can turn to SafeGard's Full Service Travel Medicine Consultation Program through Costco. This program connects you with a travel medicine physician, who will review your medical history and travel plans and email you a personalized travel report.

How To Get Your Recommended Shots And Medications

When you receive your travel report, SafeGard will also email your pharmacy about your recommended shots and medications. You can then schedule an appointment with your pharmacy to get whatever shots or prescriptions you'll need. Although the consultation costs $39.99 with a Costco membership, the immunizations and medications are extra. You should check with your insurance to see which ones are covered. However, Costco's Member Prescription Program offers discounted pricing for many prescriptions.

The travel immunization program through Costco is only available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Some states restrict the program to people over 18. The program will only dispense medications and shots at Costco pharmacy, which means you can't use another pharmacy if you purchase this program through Costco. A primary care physician's approval of oral medications is required for some states, but a Costco pharmacy can call your provider for this approval.

Other Considerations For Costco's Travel Immunization Program

If you prefer to get your vaccinations and medications through another pharmacy provider like Safeway or Albertsons, the cost of the program is $55. SafeGard says this online travel immunization program saves you a trip to your primary care provider. However, some primary care providers might require you to schedule an appointment before approving prescriptions.

Some Costco members who've taken part in the travel immunization program have said it was a quick and efficient way to get the right vaccinations for your destination. One user said that the Costco program was a good deal compared to other travel consultations that can cost $125. One user from Oregon was disappointed in the program because her state's laws required her to see her doctor to approve her pill-based vaccinations.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides travel health notices, required vaccinations and medicines, and travel recommendations unique to many international travel destinations. It will additionally give you a packing list to help keep you healthy while you travel overseas . You can also stay up-to-date on any global health risks that can affect your travel. The CDC provides this information for free.

What are tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis)?

Tetanus, or lockjaw, is a dangerous nerve ailment caused by the toxin of a common bacterium often found in soil. This bacterium can also exist in environments as diverse as animal excrement, house dust and operating rooms. It enters the body through cuts, scratches or wounds. Tetanus causes painful muscle tightening and stiffness throughout the body but most commonly involves the jaw and neck.

Diphtheria is a highly contagious disease caused by bacteria and is spread by coughing and sneezing. It is a respiratory disease that typically causes a sore throat, fever, swollen glands and weakness. It can also cause paralysis, heart failure and death.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious illness spread by contact with droplets coughed out by someone with the disease or by contact with recently contaminated hard surfaces upon which the droplets have landed. Early symptoms include runny nose, nasal congestion and sneezing. After this stage, the most common symptom is intense bouts of coughing in which the gasping person makes a “whoop” sound when inhaling between coughs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) The Tdap vaccine can protect adolescents and adults against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis).

To learn more about the Tdap and Td vaccines from the CDC, visit the CDC website opens in a new tab or download the following documents:

Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) (PDF) › opens in a new tab

Td (tetanus, diphtheria) (PDF) › opens in a new tab

  • Adolescents should receive a routine dose of Tdap at age 11–12 years.
  • Adults ages 19+ who have not received Tdap should get a dose of Tdap and a booster of Tdap or Td every 10 years.
  • Pregnant women should receive a Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy to protect their infants who are most at risk for severe, life-threatening complications from whooping cough (pertussis). New mothers who have never gotten Tdap should get a dose as soon as possible after delivery. Tdap is also recommended for people who come in close contact with infants, such as relatives.
  • Anyone who gets a severe cut or burn might need a dose of Td or Tdap to prevent tetanus infection. Depending on how long it has been since the person last received a tetanus-containing vaccine, they may also need to receive tetanus immune globulin. It’s best that the person who is at potential risk follow up with their healthcare provider as soon as possible to see what the correct course of treatment is for them.
  • Anyone who has had a severe reaction (for example, anaphylaxis) to any vaccine component after a previous dose of DTaP, DT, Td or Tdap
  • Anyone who developed encephalopathy (for example, been in a coma, had prolonged seizures, or experienced a decreased level of consciousness) within 7 days after a dose of DTaP should not get Tdap, unless a cause other than the vaccine was found (these patients can get Td)
  • A moderate or severe acute illness with or without fever
  • Had Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks after a previous dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine
  • A history of reactions after a previous dose of tetanus or diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccine
  • A history of neurologic disorder, uncontrollable seizures or encephalopathy
  • Soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Deep, aching pain and loss of muscle strength in the upper arm
  • Swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing
  • Fast heartbeat

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help ease pain and reduce fever. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any unexpected or worsening reactions after receiving a vaccine.
