Turkey Travel Blog_How To Get From Istanbul Airport To The City Center

If you’re visiting Istanbul for the first time , you’re in for a treat! For sure, you’ll be exhausted when you leave, but you will have seen some of the most impressive sights ever, enjoyed food like nowhere else and probably shopped ’til you definitely dropped!

Ask anyone; Istanbul is a city that never disappoints.

However, Istanbul is huge, which means you really need to know the best ways to get around.

Most people will arrive at either Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Asian side of the city or the newer Istanbul Airport. This super-sleek airport took over from the old Ataturk Airport in 2018, and it’s a pretty impressive place to travel to/from.

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Where is Istanbul Airport?

Flight ticket types - Passengers board a Turkey Transport plane on a sunny day with a clear blue sky and distant mountains in the background.

The newly constructed Istanbul Airport, located on the European side, about 35km northwest of the city center near Arnavutköy, offers state-of-the-art facilities amidst lush landscapes, establishing itself as the main international airport in Istanbul.

Despite its distance from Istanbul’s traditional center, excellent transport options to get from the new Istanbul airport to wherever you need to go-including buses, taxis, and the metro, ensure easy access to and from the airport.

It provides a variety of amenities like duty-free shops, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes for travelers. Having traveled in both directions from Istanbul Airport, I found it to be highly efficient, with large distances between gates and terminals clearly signposted in Turkish and English.

The staff are friendly, and there are rentable areas for rest during long waits, enhancing the comfort of your stay.

Istanbul airport to istanbul city.

Many people ask how to get from Istanbul Airport to downtown, but the first thing to consider here is where exactly the city center is. Istanbul doesn’t have a clearly defined center! There are very popular spots that are in the middle of the city, so perhaps that’s what people are asking.

So, to narrow it down, let’s say that the city center of Istanbul is either:

  • Sultanahmet

Thankfully, there are ways to get from Istanbul Airport to all these places downtown .

How To Get From Istanbul Airport To Taksim

Istanbul Airport To Taksim By HAVIST Bus

HAVAIST From Sultanahmet To Istanbul Airport

Taksim is often regarded as the city center, although it is a modern center. This bustling part of the city is full of nightlife, shopping, and gastronomy. Taksim literally never sleeps.

If you are traveling from Istanbul Airport to Taksim , you have a few options. Firstly, you could take the HAVAIST bus. This coach shuttle, which also serves as an airport bus, runs between the new airport and Taksim 24 hours per day. However, this is a very popular coach, so if it’s full, you’ll have to wait for the next one.

This bus to Taksim first stops in Levent and Besiktas before arriving in Taksim, and the daily times are: 00.20, 01.00, 01.50, 02.40, 04.40, 05.40, 07.30, 08.30, 09.30, 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, 14.00, 15.00, 16.00, 17.00, 18.00, 19.15, 20.30, 21.30, 22.30, 23.30.

As you leave the airport arrivals terminal and head to platform 16, look for the HVIST -16 bus. A one-way ticket currently costs 74 Liras. The journey time is around 90 minutes but depends heavily upon traffic. The bus will drop you off at Taksim Square , and from there, it’s easy to get to wherever you are staying in Taksim on foot.

Istanbul Airport Metro To Taksim By Metro

Another way to get to Taksim from the airport is by Metro. There is a Metro station outside exit 11 of the airport, which connects you to the Metro service that runs all around the city. Taksim Square has a Metro station, and you can reach everywhere else in that part of the city on foot.

If you want to save a little money or you want a local experience, the Metro is the way to go. It’s very easy to use and very comfortable.

The Metro service runs from 6 am until midnight, and trains run to Taksim every 10 minutes or so. This is a bustling line, especially in the afternoon, so it may not be the best option if you have a lot of luggage . However, it will take around 35-40 minutes, and you won’t encounter traffic! You take the M11 line to Kağıthane (purple line) and then switch to the M7 & M2 line to Taksim.

Fun fact: The M11 line is the fastest in the country!

The M11 line is very regular, with a train every 8 minutes, and the overall journey takes no more than 24 minutes. Then you switch, and you’ll be where you need to be in less than an hour from the airport to your destination.

It is five stops to Kağıthane, and once you arrive, you’ll need to exit the station to the street level and follow the M signs to the other Metro station, which takes just a couple of minutes. This is where you will take the M7 line. And don’t panic; it sounds complicated, but it’s all so clearly marked, and you definitely won’t be the only person going in that direction.

Take the M7 line to Şişli-Mecidiyeköy and then switch to the M2 line, which goes directly to Taksim two stops later. Again, don’t worry; it sounds like a lot, but it’s so easy.

Getting From Arrivals To The Istanbul Airport Metro Station

This in itself needs a how-to guide!

You can use the moving walkways to get from the arrivals terminal to the Metro station, so if you have a large suitcase, you don’t have to drag it behind you. The Metro station is very well signposted, so when you exit the terminal, look for the signs with the big letter U on a red background; alternatively, head to doors 3 and 19, which have clear instructions on them.

Don’t worry, you really can’t miss the signs!

Once you get to the Metro station, there are escalators or a lift; if you have a lot of luggage, wait for the lift.

It’s also helpful to note that if you have mobility issues, there is a buggy service that will take you to the Metro station. Ask a member of the airport staff or head to gate 11, where you’ll find a call point for the buggy service to pick you up.

Brands We Use And Trust

Getting to taksim by taking a taxi or private airport transfer from istanbul airport.

Taxis in Istanbul

You can take a taxi from the airport, just outside the arrivals terminal, and ask to be taken to Taksim Square.

There are three types of taxis at the airport, the most common being yellow taxis. Depending on traffic, a 40-minute journey to Taksim will cost around 440 liras.

You can also pre-book a private transfer, which costs a little more than a taxi, but there are big benefits to pre-arranging a private transfer from the airport to your Istanbul hotel .

For starters, you’ll avoid the hassle and stress of trying to hail a taxi or navigate public transportation after a long flight . A private transfer lets you relax and enjoy the ride as someone else takes care of the driving.

In addition, private transfers are often more comfortable and luxurious than other transport options. You can choose to ride in style in a limousine or SUV or opt for a more budget-friendly sedan. Either way, you can sit back and enjoy the scenery as you’re whisked to your destination.

Finally, by pre-booking your transfer ahead of time , you can be assured of a smooth and seamless experience. Your driver will be waiting for you at the airport when you arrive and will help with your luggage before escorting you to your vehicle.

This is the perfect way to start or end your trip without any worries about getting around town.

How To Get An Airport Transfer To Sultanahmet By Taxi Or Private Airport Transfer

Getting around Istanbul - Taxi in Istanbul

If you prefer to get a taxi to Sultanahmet, you can use the yellow, blue, or black taxis outside the arrivals terminal. However, the most common type is the yellow taxi, and for a journey of 53 minutes (depending upon traffic), you’re looking at around 480 Liras.

Just like with Taksim, you can book a private transfer that will cost a little more than a taxi, but you will avoid the hassle and stress of waiting in long lines, and the driver will be waiting for you at the airport when you arrive and will help with your luggage before escorting you to your vehicle. Once there, exit the Metro station and walk for five minutes, following the signs to Istanbul University. On your way, you’ll see the tram stop at Laleli-Istanbul Üniversite.

Again, this is very easy in reality; it just sounds complicated on paper! Overall, the entire journey, including transfers between stations, takes no more than 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Once there, take the T1 tram, which goes towards Eminönü or Kabataş. You’ll stay on the tram for three stops, and you’ll arrive at Sultanahmet!

You need to look for the HVIST-15 bus as you leave the airport arrivals terminal. A one-way ticket currently costs 74 Liras. The journey time is around 80 minutes, but it depends heavily upon traffic.

How To Get From Istanbul Airport To Besiktas By Airport Taxi

About The IstanbulKart

Istanbul Card - transport in Istanbul

Before we talk about using public transport, we need to cover an important subject – the IstanbulKart.

The IstanbulKart is a pre-paid, contactless card you use to pay for all public transport across Istanbul , including the bus, Metro, ferry, and tram. If you have a group, you can buy one card, and five people can use it.

Don’t think you don’t need this card if you’re only visiting for a few days; you cannot pay for public transport in any other way, so you must have this card. Taxis are ridiculously expensive and quite hard to get when you want one, so having a public transport card gives you a lot more freedom and peace of mind.

You can buy your IstanbulKart from the Metro station at the airport. The machines are blue and yellow and clearly state ‘IstanbulKart’ on them. Some machines allow you to pay by credit/debit card, and others enable you to pay with Lira cash. You may have to queue, so just be patient.

Once you have your card and you’ve topped it up with some money, you ‘beep’ your card at the Metro gate or when you get onto a bus/tram throughout the city.

For reference, a one way journey (regardless of the distance) costs 7.50TL currently. However, if you have to switch buses or Metros to get to your final destination, you’ll need to scan your card twice, so you’ll pay twice.

The current price of an IstanbulKart without any credit is 50TL.

If you’re using the HAVAIST service to get to any part of Istanbul, you’ll need to purchase your ticket from the HAVAIST ticket office, which is located close to the huge transport map in the arrivals hall. You can pay by cash or card. Note that you cannot use your IstanbulKart on HAVAIST buses; it’s a separate service. However, you can pre-purchase your ticket online from the HAVAIST website.

To reach Taksim , take the line IST-16 which will drop you off in front of the Point Hotel, near Taksim square. From there you can either walk to your hotel, take a taxi or the metro.

Tour Booking Advice

To reach Sultanahmet take the IST-20 which will drop you off at Sultanahmet Square bus stop (only a breath away from Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque) in about 100 minutes (depending on the traffic congestion).

How to get from Istanbul Airport to City Center by Metro

The metro line M11 which will link Istanbul airport to the city center is expected to be put in operation in 2023.

If you wish to get to Istanbul Sultanahmet area from Istanbul airport by metro, you will have to take the line M11 to Gayrettepe Station and then transfer to line M2 to Vezneciler Station, a 15-20 minutes walk from Sultanahmet Square.

How to get from Istanbul Airport to City Center by Car

Another alternative for your transfer from Istanbul airport to Istanbul city center is renting a car. A car rental will give you freedom and independence, but you will have to deal with the traffic jams and navigating through the hectic streets of Istanbul.

Istanbul Airport to Istanbul City Center Hotel Airport Pick-Up

Most hotels will offer an airport pick-up upon request. These pick-ups are rarely free of charge, and often much more expensive than the options mentioned above. It’s up to you to calculate the difference and decide which option best suits your needs or preference.

How to get from Istanbul Airport to City Center by Taxi

Taking a taxi from Istanbul Airport guarantees a comfortable transfer but not a quick one due to the heavy traffic on Istanbul streets. Nevertheless, with an Istanbul airport taxi, you will reach your exact destination in the Sultanahmet historic area stress-free.

travel from istanbul airport to city center

A trip from the new Istanbul airport will set you back a minimum of €30 to Taksim and €34 to Sultanahmet. However, these are NOT fixed prices since the fee varies according to travel time as taxis don’t offer fixed prices. If the taxi hits traffic, uses toll roads or takes a longer (but according to the taxi driver) quicker road, the fare may increase quickly.

In case you must take a taxi, just walk to the official taxi ranks located just outside the terminal. Never take a ride from the hustlers inside the airport terminal, and always ask to switch on the metre. Yellow taxis are the ordinary and cheapest ones while you can also hire a more comfortable blue taxi (15% more expensive) or a black luxurious taxi vehicle (100% more expensive).

How to get from Istanbul Airport to City Center by Private Shuttle

Tip: This is the best option especially for the ones traveling in group, or having much luggage.

A private shuttle is a great alternative for both the taxi and the standard airport shuttle. They are more comfortable than taxis, have a fixed rate, hence offer a much more relaxed (and safe) drive to your hotel. Unlike the Havaist airport shuttle, private shuttles bring you to the hotel’s doorstep. They are also the best option when you travel with very young children and offer child seats.

travel from istanbul airport to city center

The advantage of using a private shuttle is that you pay a fixed price. You can also pay in advance using dollars or euros so that you don’t have to deal with local currencies or getting an IstanbulKart. You can find a listing of private shuttle companies on Google.

This means that you will never sit or stand on an overcrowded shuttle bus and can always enjoy a comfortable bus ride.

There are buses operated by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and called ‘Havaist’. Havaist Airport Passenger Transportation Service was established to transport passengers between Istanbul Airport and the city center. There are a total of 20 bus lines running from Istanbul Airport to all parts of the city and back to the airport. Buses depart every 15-45 minutes depending on the time of day and destination. The Metro line from Sabiha Gökçen to Kadıköy recently opened

In October 2022, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality opened the M4 , the first metro line connecting Sabiha Gökçen Airport and Kadıköy on the Asian side of Istanbul. Kadikoy is not only the most popular district on the Asian side, it is also well connected to the European side by public transportation. To get from Kadikoy to Taksim, Sultanahmet or anywhere else, you can use the ferry or the underwater subway Marmaray.

The journey from Sabiha Gökçen airport to Kadıköy takes about 52 minutes and 23 stations. The metro runs every 5 minutes from 6.00 am until 12.00 am. The M4 line is the cheapest means of transportation from the airport and costs around ₺13. Please note that you need an IstanbulKart to use the metro. Read where and how to get an IstanbulKart for public transportation.

Istanbul Airport private shuttle bus

There are also many private shuttle buses at the airport. You can easily organize a pick-up after your flight from the comfort of your home. Looking at the price, we cannot say that this is a good deal. Most of the shuttles are 10 to 20 times more expensive than public transportation and twice the price of a taxi you can take directly from the airport.

How to go from Istanbul airport to the city?

We always recommend using the shuttle buses that run between the airports and the most popular destinations in Istanbul. Using airport buses will save you money, especially if you are not traveling with a large group. If you are traveling with a group of more than five people, a taxi can be close to the price of a shuttle bus.

As mentioned before, Havaist buses are the easiest and fastest way to get from Istanbul Airport to Taksim. Havaist bus line HVIST-16 departs from the -2nd floor outside the arrivals hall of Istanbul Airport and goes directly to Taksim without a transfer. The ticket fare is ₺52/person and the approximate travel time between Taksim and Istanbul Airport is 90 minutes with Havaist Airport Buses. This time may vary depending on weather and road conditions.

havaist-istanbulairport-taksim-transfer

The same goes for traveling to Sultanahmet; the easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport to Sultanahmet is to take the shuttle bus. There used to be a bus line that went directly to Sultanahmet but it is currently out of service. Instead, you can use Havaist bus line HVIST-12 until Aksaray-Beyazıt Meydan stop. The duration is 90 minutes and the ticket costs ₺52 per person. From Aksaray-Beyazıt Meydan bus station, you can reach Sultanahmet within a reasonable walking distance. If you have heavy luggage, taking a taxi from the bus station or airport may be a better option. However, if you can carry your luggage, taking the shuttle bus is the best way to leave the airport.

by Private & Shared Shuttles

If you are a group or a family with kids or having lots of luggage with you, than we highly recommend you to take  private shuttle transfers  for your hotel as they offer a fixed rate, comfortable and safe transfer that include meet-and-greet airport pickups and luggage assistance to your hotel from the airports or vice versa.

The IETT or HAVAIST airport shuttles will drop you off at the city center and you’ll need to take a taxi or walk from there again which will harder for you with your kids and luggage. But private transfers drives you just to the entrance of your hotel .

We had a long delay in clearing customs and wondered that the driver would still be waiting. We were happy after we see the driver waiting with a plate with my name. He helped us with the luggage. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and we really felt safe. The trip to Istanbul city center was also very comfortable. We definitely would book this company again.

Took a transfer from Istanbul Airport to Emimonu Sirkeci, the transfer was excellent, driver found our destination no problem. Really helped to make a stressful arrival in a new country very easy for us.

Notices: • Metro and Airport Bus can be a first tour of the city, but are recommended only with light luggage. • There may be waiting times at the taxi rank if there are high volume of passengers. The Ultimate Guide: How to Get From Istanbul New Airport to the City Center

One of the downsides when Istanbul moved its main airport to Istanbul New Airport in 2018 was the public transportation from the airport to the city center. Situated in Arnavutkoy , the airport area is still developing and it's practically out of nowhere.

Unlike the former main hub Attaturk Airport, which is located in Bakirkoy with easy access by public transport in Istanbul – it can take 1-2 hours to get from Istanbul New Airport to the city center, even if you use a private airport transfer .

The good news is that it's been 6 years since the new airport in Istanbul started operating, and it's now easier to find an airport transfer from the new airport to Istanbul city center.

No matter which part of Istanbul you're planning to go to, you can now take advantage of a few transport options from the airport to the city. From the public bus, metro, coach shuttle with Havaist, to private airport transfer , here's the ultimate guide to getting from Istanbul New Airport to city center areas like Taksim, Sultanahmet, etc!

Short on time to read the rest of the article?

Please note that this post is about the airport transfer options from Istanbul New Airport on the European side to the other areas of Istanbul.

Other than the private transfer from Istanbul airport to the city center , my preferred transport option will be the Havaist shuttle bus, which you should be able to check the time schedule here or book the ticket online here .

For airport transfers from Sabiha Gokcen International Airport on the Asian side, I'd recommend checking the time schedule for Havabus here or book a private transfer here .

5 Best Ways to Get to the City Center from Istanbul New Airport

Until January 2023, the transport option from the city center to Istanbul New Airport is only limited to buses and airport taxis. Luckily, we can now take the Istanbul New Airport train to the city center via Kagithane.

So, here are the best ways to get to the city center from Istanbul airport!

The Necessary Turkiye Itinerary

Pay as you like, and immerse yourself in a week-long journey through Istanbul's vibrant bazaars, Cappadocia's surreal landscapes, and hidden gems only locals know. This digital guide is your passport to convenience, featuring a detailed travel guide, culinary delights, and necessary spots to visit in Turkiye!

The Necessary Turkiye Itinerary

IETT Public Bus

The cheapest way to get from Istanbul airport to the city center is by IETT public bus. IETT stands for  Istanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tunel , the city's public urban transport company responsible for connecting public transport in Istanbul – including municipal buses, trams, and funiculars.

IETT public bus in Istanbul, Turkiye.

How to Get from Istanbul New Airport to the City Center by Public Bus

Currently, six bus lines operate daily from Istanbul New Airport to various areas in the city. The average cost from Istanbul airport to the city center by IETT public bus is around 20 TL (around $0.63 USD), depending on which part of Istanbul you're going to.

To use the IETT public bus in Istanbul, you can only pay using Istanbulkart, so make sure to get your Istanbul transport card here .

IETT Public Bus Lines from Istanbul Airport to the City

While it's the cheapest option to get from the European side of Istanbul airport to the city, taking a public IETT bus to Istanbul city center is not for the faint of heart. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it if you arrive in Istanbul from a long-haul flight because the journey itself would be tremendously exhausting.

For context, some bus lines mentioned above have over 40 stops in total between the airport and the last stop.

The same journey from the airport to the city that could take only around an hour by a coach shuttle, it may take around 2-3 hours by the public bus, which is probably not your ideal option if you prioritize comfort for your airport transfer in Istanbul.

I've learned it the hard way when I tried to take a public bus to Taksim from Skylon Hotel near Istanbul New Airport . Mind you, I didn't even have to carry my bags and all that, and it was already pretty exhausting.

My advice is that you may want to take a better transport option from Istanbul New Airport, unless (1) you're traveling on a super tight budget or (2) you're traveling super light.

Pros & Cons of Traveling with IETT Public Bus from the Airport to Istanbul City Center

  • It's the cheapest option to get to the city center from Istanbul New Airport.
  • It's a public bus, so you can expect the bus to get super packed along the way. This may not be an ideal option if you carry a lot of luggage with you. Mind you, while technically it's not forbidden to carry a lot of luggage with you on the bus, the other passengers may not be happy about it.
  • The journey from the airport to Istanbul city center can take hours; spare at least 3-4 hours since the chance of you getting stuck in the traffic in Istanbul is never zero.

The newest addition for the transport option between Istanbul New Airport and the city center is metro, which started operating in January 2023. It's a cheaper option compared to a taxi and a shuttle service, but it's certainly faster than the public bus.

If you're looking for information on how to get to Istanbul New Airport from the city center by train, this is how!

Istanbul New Airport metro station in Istanbul, Turkiye.

How to Get from Istanbul New Airport to the City Center by Metro Train

The metro from Istanbul New Airport to the city center stops at Kagithane train station. Note that it can be convenient if you plan to stay around Kagithane area in Istanbul – but if you stay around more popular tourist areas like Beyoglu , Besiktas, or Sultanahmet, you'll still have a long journey to get to your accommodation from there.

I got a chance to try out the metro from the city center to Istanbul New Airport when I picked up my boyfriend from the airport. Obviously, I went to the airport empty-handed, which made the metro the best option for me to get there.

But again, I wouldn't recommend taking the metro if you carry a big luggage. When I took the metro from Taksim to Istanbul New Airport, I had to transfer to another train in Mecidiyekoy station to get to Kagithane – and the escalator was broken. I honestly can't imagine what would have happened if I was there with a large suitcase trying to catch my flight.

The Kagithane - Istanbul New Airport metro line.

This was really confusing for me because I had a hard time finding the other station on Google Maps. I ended up having to ask a stranger to find it, but once you find the other metro station in Kagithane, you can continue your journey to your final destination in Istanbul.

From Istanbul airport to Kagithane, you can expect to pay around 18 TL (around $0.57 USD). But once you reach Kagithane, you will need to exit and head to another metro station across the last stop from the airport.

A single journey with a metro in Istanbul will cost you around 18 TL, so you can expect to spend around 32 TL (around $1 USD) – assuming you only have to transfer once in Kagithane.

Just like the IETT public bus, you can only use Istanbulkart for the payment method. So make sure to purchase this Istanbulkart to smoothen your plan and journey!

Kagithane metro station in Istanbul, Turkiye.

Pros & Cons of Traveling with Metro from the Airport to Istanbul City Center

  • It's affordable, and definitely faster and more convenient than the IETT public bus.
  • It's a good transfer option from the airport to Istanbul city center (or vice versa), even if you bring a big luggage… As long as all the facilities, like elevators or escalators, work properly.
  • Just like the other transport options in Istanbul, the metro from the city center to Istanbul New Airport is also disability-friendly.
  • I spent around 2 hours from Taksim to Istanbul New Airport by metro when I picked up my boyfriend. Keep in mind that it also took longer because the escalator at Mecidiyekoy station was broken at the time, so I imagine it could have been faster if everything had worked properly.
  • If this is your first time traveling to Istanbul New Airport from the city center (or the other way around), it can be pretty confusing once you reach Kagithane station. It's better to ask the staff as soon as you arrive in Kagithane, so you can transfer to the next train smoothly.

Havaist Bus

Havaist is by far my favorite airport transfer from Istanbul New Airport to the city center. It's convenient, affordable, and definitely faster than the IETT bus since they operate point-to-point from the area of your choice in Istanbul to the airport.

Havaist is a shuttle bus company that provides services from various Istanbul areas to the new airport on the European side of the town. For services to Sabiha Gokcen International Airport on the Asian side, there's another shuttle service called Havabus that goes to other areas in the city.

No matter which part of Istanbul you're going to – be it Taksim in Beyoglu or Sultanahmet in Fatih area, chances are you will find a Havaist route that caters to your destination. Even if they don't, you can still rely on the public bus or taxi from your last stop to the accommodation.

Here's everything you need to know about taking a Havaist bus from the new airport into town!

Havaist departure point at Istanbul New Airport in Arnavutkoy, Istanbul.

How to Get from Istanbul New Airport to the City Center by Havaist Bus

Havaist operates every hour (sometimes every 30 minutes even!) from various areas in Istanbul to the new airport. For all information related to Havais bus, including the time schedule, you can check  their official website here .

Booking your ticket online for Havaist bus from Istanbul New Airport to the city center is not required, but you can do it on the app.

I personally prefer to purchase a go-show ticket because if it's the journey from Istanbul New Airport to the city after my flight arrival, it might take a while for me to get through the immigration. It's not easy to choose the exact time for the bus departure from the airport if I buy the ticket in advance.

Plus, even if I miss the bus, I can always choose another route that's closer to my destination… And even if I have to wait for the next bus, 30 minutes to an hour won't be a big deal for me.

Go to the -2 level at the airport, as this is the departure point of all buses from Istanbul New Airport.

Apart from Havaist and Havabus, there are also a few other bus companies that provide intercity services to other cities in Turkiye . To name a few, there are bus services that go directly from Istanbul New Airport to nearby cities like Edirne , Bursa , and Iznik.

From Istanbul New Airport departure point, you can check the information board to see from which platform your bus will depart. Each platform number is designated for a certain destination, so make sure to go according to your travel plan.

Havaist shuttle bus from Istanbul New Airport to the city.

If you plan to take a Havaist bus from the city to Istanbul New Airport, Havaist usually has a designated departure point in each area in Istanbul. I only got a chance to take the Havaist bus from two different areas in Istanbul: Taksim and Besiktas.

The Havaist departure point in Taksim is located near Point Hotel in Istanbul , so it's pretty easy to find it on Google Maps.

But it wasn't the case when I departed from Besiktas, as I didn't know exactly where the departure point for Havaist in Besiktas. And I had a stroke of bad luck as I got some crazy taxi driver in Istanbul who basically dropped me off out of nowhere.

While it was pretty annoying to have to walk around 500 meters from where he dropped me off, I could finally find the departure point in Besiktas as it wasn't too far from the intersection close to the waterfront.

Whether you take Havaist bus from or to Istanbul New Airport, all shuttle services with Havaist accept both cash and card for payment.

I paid 74 TL (around $3 USD) on my last trip to Istanbul last year, but due to the rapid change of the local economy in Turkiye, it's best to  check their website directly  to get the updated price of the Havaist bus ticket.

From either departure point, they tend to operate on a first-come-first-served basis, so there won't be any assigned seats even if you book the ticket in advance.

Pros & Cons of Traveling with Havaist Bus from the Airport to Istanbul City Center

  • It's affordable, convenient, and definitely the best option compared to other public transport like the IETT bus or metro.
  • It departs every 30 minutes to an hour, so you don't have to wait too long even if you miss the last bus.
  • You can pay for the ticket on-site, either by cash or card.
  • Their last point is scattered throughout various areas of Istanbul, so you can easily find a bus to both the European and Asian sides of the city.
  • They have a designated compartment for luggage, so you won't have to carry your bag everywhere like you do when taking an IETT bus or metro.
  • The legroom isn't too large, so I can imagine it won't be as comfortable for tall people.
  • There is no assigned seat on the bus, so you may end up sitting next to a total stranger when the bus is full.

Istanbul Airport Taxi

Taxi drivers in Istanbul are known as notorious, and I have to agree with this stereotype since I have had a few experiences that proved it right. However, I also met some really great taxi drivers in Istanbul, mostly when I took a taxi from the airport.

So, regardless of the stereotype, I think taking a taxi from Istanbul New Airport is still one of the best ways to get to the city center. Most of them will use the taximeter properly, so you don't have to be afraid of getting scammed – which is something to be expected when you hail a cab in the city area of Istanbul!

Yellow taxi in Istanbul, Turkiye.

How to Get from Istanbul New Airport to the City Center by Taxi

Upon arrival at Istanbul New Airport, you'll see some stalls offering taxi services to the city. They will pinpoint where you can wait for the taxi of your choice, as there are three taxi types in Istanbul as follows:

  • Yellow taxis ( sari taksi ) are the most common type in Istanbul. The starting fee is 25 TL (around $0.8 USD), and the fare increases by about 18 TL (around $0.6 USD) per kilometer.
  • Blue/turquoise taxis ( mavi/turkuaz taksi ) are the higher-end taxi type, typically because the cars will be more luxurious than the yellow ones. You can expect to pay the starting fee of 29 TL (around $0.9 USD), with the fare will be around 20 TL (around $0.65 USD) per kilometer.
  • Black taxis ( siyah taksi ) are usually large, luxurious vehicles like Mercedes E180. This type of taxi is suitable if you travel in a group or have a lot of bags. The fare usually starts at 41 TL (around $1.3 USD), with the taximeter about 32 TL (around $1 USD) per kilometer.

Another reason for taking a taxi from Istanbul airport to the city center is that you can book the taxi online via apps like Uber or Bitaksi .

However, it's important to note that the price shown on these apps is only an estimate, so the final price may end up higher than what you see on either Uber or Bitaksi. Also, you'll most likely get only a yellow taxi if you book via these apps.

If you connect your card to your Uber account, then you can pay for the taxi ride online directly via the app.

But I noticed that even though there's an option to pay online on Bitaksi, you will still have to pay the trip by the end of the ride. The good news is that almost all taxis in Turkiye accept card payment in addition to cash!

Pros & Cons of Traveling with Taxi from the Airport to Istanbul City Center

  • You can choose the type of taxi based on your needs and budget.
  • It's definitely the most convenient option compared to the public transport.
  • Obviously, you can head to your accommodation directly without having to transfer and take another public transport to get to your destination.
  • Since it's not a fixed rate, anything could happen since the taximeter will be ticking until you get to your final stop. Be sure to use Google Maps to minimize getting scammed by a taxi driver in Istanbul.
  • Istanbul traffic can be super terrible, so it might add extra cost to your taxi ride.

Private Airport Transfer

If you want it easy and have a slightly higher budget, then booking a private transfer from Istanbul New Airport is probably the best choice. Most airport transfer services include a meet-and-greet upon arrival, so you can just show up and meet the driver who picks you up without any hassle.

If you book tours via sites like Viator or GetYourGuide , you can also find a lot of airport transfer options with an average rate of $40 USD.

Istanbul New Airport in Arnavutkoy, Turkiye.

How to Get from Istanbul New Airport to the City Center by Private Transfer

Most hotels in Istanbul also offer private transfer service, so you don't necessarily need to book it online via platforms like GetTransfer or Kiwitaxi . When I stayed at Mia Pera Hotel Istanbul in Beyoglu , they offered me a private transfer for around 40 euros (around $44 USD).

Honestly, I never use a private transfer from Istanbul airport to the city center because I usually travel with my boyfriend if not solo, so the Havaist bus seems like a great option for us.

However, I can see how booking an airport transfer in advance can be a great option… Especially if you're traveling with a group.

You can pick the type of vehicle according to your needs and budget, and more importantly they offer a fixed rate from Istanbul New Airport to the city center. It means that you won't have to worry about the taximeter ticking on during horrible traffic or a driver trying to scam you to get to the city center.

Even better, you can also pay everything online in advance so you don't have to worry about carrying a lot of cash on your first day in Istanbul. Tipping is optional in Turkiye, but appreciated so you can also choose to tip the driver for around 10% of what you paid for the transfer.

Pros & Cons of Traveling with Private Transfer from the Airport to Istanbul City Center

  • It's the most convenient option to travel from Istanbul New Airport to the city center.
  • You can choose the type of vehicle based on your needs and budget. There are a lot of options you can find on platforms like Kiwitaxi , GetTransfer , or even GetYourGuide and Viator .
  • Some private transfer services also include a meet-and-greet upon arrival, so the driver will wait for you at the arrival gate.
  • You can pay everything at a fixed rate, so you don't have to worry about the driver trying to scam you. Plus, you can pay for everything in advance, even though a tip for the driver is optional.
  • On average, the price of an airport private transfer is usually higher than that of a regular yellow taxi in Istanbul. However, it can be a great option if you're looking for a bigger vehicle.

One of the best ways to check the estimated price of your trip from Istanbul airport to the city is by installing apps like Uber or Bitaksi, as they will give you an estimate of the total cost for the trip from the airport to your destination in Istanbul.

If you have Uber or Bitaksi, you can also book a taxi directly there.

Are there buses from Istanbul Airport to the city center?

Yes, you can choose to take either the IETT public bus or the shuttle bus with Havaist.

If you take the IETT public bus, you will need to have Istanbulkart for the payment. However, keep in mind that the journey to the city center from Istanbul New Airport can be pretty exhausting with some bus lines have over 40 stops in between. That being said, the IETT public bus in Istanbul is still the cheapest option to get from Istanbul airport to the city.

As for Havaist, you need to go to their departure point on the -2 level at Istanbul New Airport and head to the designated platform with your travel destination in the city.

The Havaist shuttle bus typically departs every 30 minutes or an hour, and it operates on a first-come-first-served basis. You can pay the bus ticket with cash, but they also accept card payments through the bus attendants.

travel from istanbul airport to city center

While the area of Istanbul New Airport is still developing with the distance that's not so close to the city center, fortunately the infrastructure to get from the airport to Istanbul city center is well-equipped.

With so many options, from public buses, metro, shuttle coaches like Havaist, and even private transfers, you can easily choose the best way to get from Istanbul New Airport to the city center based on your budget and needs.

For me, since I mostly travel solo to Turkiye and arrive in Istanbul, I find Havaist the best transfer option from the airport to the city. However, if you're traveling in a group with a lot of carry-ons, I'd definitely recommend booking a private transfer in advance through platforms like GetTransfer.

When you arrive in Istanbul and want to get to the city center, you have several transportation options to choose from. Istanbul Airport (IST) is located about 40 kilometers from the city center, but there are many ways to get there.

The fastest and most convenient option is by taxi or private transfer (more on this in a moment).

There are also public transportation options such as the subway, buses or shuttles (see below).

If you prefer to drive, you can also rent a car. Have fun in Istanbul traffic. 😉

  • Pros: Fast and convenient, can take you directly to your destination.
  • Cons: Expensive, can be difficult to find a taxi during peak times.
  • Pros: Affordable and reliable, multiple lines to choose from.
  • Cons: Can be slow during traffic, not as convenient as a taxi. It also doesn’t take you directly to your accommodation.
  • Pros: Affordable, connects to the city center and other major destinations.
  • Cons: Can be crowded, not as convenient as a taxi or bus for getting to your final destination. You’ll also likely need to change lines a few times, which is a bit confusing as not well sign-posted and makes it more time-consuming.
  • Pros: Convenient and reliable, can be tailored to your specific needs.
  • Cons: Expensive, and can also get affected by traffic.
  • Pros: Freedom to explore the city at your own pace, can be cheaper than a private transfer for longer trips.
  • Cons: Can be difficult to navigate Istanbul traffic, can be expensive to park in the city center.

Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, so you should decide which one is best for you depending on your needs. No matter which option you choose, the drive from the airport to the city center will give you a first glimpse of the vibrant metropolis of Istanbul with its famous sights and unique atmosphere.

However, if you want to save money, use public transportation. There is a metro line that goes directly from the airport to the city center.

Since January 2023, the (M11) Istanbul Airport – Gayrettepe has been in operation and stops at a total of 7 stations, from Istanbul Airport to Kağıthane. Once the integration of the Gayrettepe and Mahmutbey metro lines is completed, Istanbul Airport will be easily accessible through the entire rail network.

  • Cargo-Terminal
  • İstanbul Havalimanı
  • Kemerburgaz
  • Üniversite-Hasdal
  • Kağıthane (about 60 minutes ride)

From Kağıthane you have to get off and choose between other options and connections. The trip is really very cheap, but it is also more complicated. We decided to take the metro to the airport when leaving as we had time to spare. We got on at Kabataş tram stop and it took around an hour and a half to reach the airport. We had to change from the tram and then two different metro lines before getting onto the main metro line that goes to the airport.

While the most affordable option (costing a total of TRY 65 after all the different lines we had to use), it was a lot more complicated and time-consuming. At one point, we only managed to find where to get onto the main airport metro line because a local, who happened to also be going to the airport, helped us. Though, even he was saying that it was unnecessarily confusing. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend taking this option.

  • You pay TRY 15 for each line that you use (metro, bus, tram or ferry), and TRY20 for the airport line. Therefore, your final cost will depend how many times you need to change lines.
  • Frequency: Every 20 minutes
  • Length of line: 34 km
  • Hours of operation İstanbul Havalimanı – Kağıthane: 06:00 – 00:00 hrs. Kağıthane – Istanbul Havalimanı: 06:00 – 00:40 a.m.

The metro is about a 6-10 minute walk from the airport terminal. Look for entrance/exit number 10.

Another option is the Havabus shuttle bus, which has several stops in the city center.

HAVAIST is the official airport bus service between the new Istanbul Airport (IST) and around 50 destinations in the city.

HAVAIST airport shuttle buses offer passengers a safe, comfortable and high quality service with vehicles on Euro6 standard that can accommodate 46 passengers. The buses are equipped with the latest technology such as high quality TV screens, USB chargers and Wi-Fi service.

Wheelchair users traveling from the airport to the city center are advised to go to the HAVAİST counters in the transportation hall at least one hour in advance and indicate the route they want to take.

These buses are really easy to find and you can pay onboard.

The formerly red, now yellow buses go to all parts of the city, including the Upper Bosphorus and across the Bosphorus bridges. The main bus stops are in Eminönü, Taksim Square, Üsküdar and Kadıköy. With over 500 bus lines and some train lines, İETT is the largest public transportation company in Turkey.

İETT buses at the airport are wheelchair accessible.

  • H-1 / Mahmutbey Metro / Mahmutbey Metro / 2 Tickets TRY 19,80 = $0.75

  • H-8 / Hacıosman Metro Station – Sarıyer / 2 Tickets TRY 19,80 = $0.75

At Istanbul Airport, a 24-hour taxi service is available, which is based on three different taxi categories:

  • the black “E” cabs
  • the blue “D” cabs and
  • the orange “C” cabs

Guests can order a taxi from the main stands in the Plaza area as well as from the vehicles in the Departures level (2nd floor), which belong to the Istanbul Airport Taxi Drivers Cooperative and adhere to the taxi meter rate set by UKOME.

In order to meet the demand for vehicles with more storage space, larger passenger capacity (8+1) and other similar features, UKOME has introduced different tariffs for turquoise and black upper segment taxis in order to improve service quality and promote zero-emission vehicles .

According to the tariff administered by UKOME, the fares for turquoise cabs are only 15% higher than the fares for orange cabs , while the fares for luxury black cabs are a remarkable 70% higher than the fares for orange cabs.

Route / Orange Taxi Fares / Blue Taxi Fares / Black Luxustaxi Fares

Aksaray / TRY 440 = $16 / TRY 505 = $19 / TRY 745 = $28

Bakırköy / TRY 480 = $18 / TRY 555 = $21 / TRY 850 = $31

Beşiktaş / TRY 440 = $18 / TRY 505 = $19 / TRY 745 = $28

Beylikdüzü / TRY 610 = $23 / TRY 700 = $26 / TRY 1035 = $38

Etiler / TRY 440 = $18 / TRY 505 = $19 / TRY 745 = $28

Taksim TRY 440 = $18 / TRY 505 = $19 / TRY 745 = $28

The rates shown in the table are valid 24 hours a day.

Any bridge, bus terminal or road tolls are the responsibility of the client. In the case of Private Airport Transfer, these are included, which makes the trip much easier and more pleasant, as that makes it also possible to change money in the city then.

If the passenger wishes to use the Eurasia Tunnel to transfer between the Anatolian and European sides of the city, he/she must pay the toll for the 15 July Martyrs Bridge or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge to cover the return taxi ride to the Anatolian side. This is in addition to the Eurasia Tunnel toll.

I recommend that you buy the Istanbul Welcome Card , which not only includes public transportation, but also fast entry and no queues at the main attractions (about $95). It also includes a boat ride on the Bosphorus and excursions. Since you’ll probably want to see Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern and Hagia Sophia anyway, you’ll save a lot of money without having to wait in line. The Istanbul Welcome Classic Card includes public transportation, a Bosphorus cruise and an audio guide, but not the sights, so it’s cheaper (about $27).

Whichever option you choose, there is always a connection that will meet your needs. The important thing is to do your research and take your time to find the best option for you.

This way, you can start your trip to Istanbul stress-free and start discovering this magical city right away!

If you’re planning to go from Istanbul airport to the city center, you should get an overview of the prices and costs. There are various means of transportation such as buses, taxis and subways.

However, most tourists prefer shuttle services or private transfers as they are more convenient and go directly to the hotel.

The shuttle service costs about 5-10 USD per person and the private transfer costs about 30-45 USD for up to 4 people.

However, if you are on a budget, the metro is a good option as it only costs about 2 USD.

Taxis are also available, but be sure to negotiate the price beforehand or turn on the meter. Remember that bridge and road tolls are your responsibility.

Overall, prices in Istanbul are very reasonable compared to other European cities. So you don’t have to spend much to enjoy the city and discover its beauty. We have listed prices in each section above – though, note that Turkey has been hit with severe inflation over recent years so prices may be different.

If you are coming to Istanbul, there are a few tips and tricks that can make your trip even more enjoyable.

For example, you should definitely learn a few words of Turkish – even though English is spoken in many parts of the city, it is always helpful to know a few basic phrases.

It’s also a good idea to make a list of the most important sights and restaurants so that you don’t waste time and can hit the ground running.

And last but not least, just let yourself go and enjoy the atmosphere of this fascinating city – Istanbul has so much to offer that you will surely discover new corners and facets again and again!

Istanbul Airport Transfer If You Arrive at IST Airport

Kadikoy in Istanbul guide

Let’s start with tips on IST airport transfer since this is the largest airport that receives the majority of international flights. Most likely you will fly here.

As with any large airport hub, Istanbul International Airport (IST) has various modes of transportation available for traveling between the airport and city center (as well as different neighborhoods) that are convenient options for the journey to and from the airport.

These include:

  • pre-arranged shuttles
  • rental cars

Which one to choose in the end depends on your budget and timing but below, I am going to talk about each mode of transportation and highlight the optimal choice for the best Istanbul airport transfer to a hotel or any other accommodation in different neighborhoods of the city .

So let’s take a look…

1.) How to Get From (IST) Istanbul Airport to the City Center & Different Neighborhoods

Istanbul airport transfer by bus – easy & cheap city transfer.

Istanbul airport transfer by bus

If you are wondering how to get from the main Istanbul airport to the city center or one of its neighborhoods on a budget and without waiting for too long, consider a bus.

Buses in Istanbul are modern and very clean , making you travel comfortably. The only disadvantage of using a bus is traffic since you never know how busy roads are going to be. So even though this is one of the cheapest airport transfers in Istanbul, it is not always fast.

But a good thing about the bus is that it is the only public transport available at night between midnight and 6 am .

Two bus carriers provide Istanbul airport transfer services. However, only one of them, called HAVAIST , provides bus services from the IST airport to Fatih, Taksim, Besiktas Kadikoy , and a few other parts of the city. The second carrier is IETT public buses but they don’t provide direct connections to the central parts of the city and follow more local routes.

So Havaist would be your best choice .

When you arrive, after going through customs and picking up your luggage from the belt, you’ll enter the outside hall for arrivals. From there, start following the blue signs to the bus terminal. You will have to go down the escalator to reach the lower floor where the bus terminal is.

The terminal has designated areas for buses. Each of those areas has big large signs with the name of the final destination. So you can easily find a platform, without asking anyone, from where a needed bus will depart.

Each Havaist bus has a number , depending on the route and final destination. If you look at the picture below, you’ll notice that bus HViST-14 goes to Kadikoy, HViST-15 to Besiktas, and HViST-16 to Taksim. More routes are available on the company’s website. Or once you reach the platform, you can find the needed bus based on the number or destination name.

Istanbul airport transfer bus schedule

Buses to some destinations run every 30 minutes while others every 60-70 minutes. You need to check the exact schedule on the Havaist website to see how often a bus you need leaves. But overall the wait time is very short.

It takes between 1 and 1.5 hours to get from IST to Taksim, depending on traffic. And between 1.5 and 2 hours to get to Kadikoy.

If you have been to Istanbul before and have a transport card, you can use it to pay for the ride. There are automatic refill machines near the bus stop, so topping up your card will not be a problem. Those who don’t have a card can easily pay with cash (only Turkish lira) or a credit card. Another option is to pay through the Havaist App and present a QR code.

Children under 6 years old can travel for free given the fact that they do not occupy a seat.

The ticket cost depends on the route. Tickets from IST airport to Taksim, for example, go for ₺136 (~$4.70/€4.30) per person and a trip to Kadikoy costs ₺149 (~$5.15/€4.70). This is the pricing set for the year 2024.

But Turkish Lira often depreciates and prices change, so the amount may be slightly different at the moment you read this post. This is why I recommend you double-check on the Havaist website if you need to know the exact number.

NOTE : If you are staying on the European side not far from Taksim and taking the Havaist bus to the Taksim area, from there you can take the green line of the subway (M2) to go to your final destination.

How to Get From Istanbul Airport to City Center By Metro M11 Line – Cheap & Fast Way

IST airport transfer by metro

Metro is usually a more convenient way to travel from the airport, as it runs on a clear schedule without traffic risk. However, you will need to make one transfer at Gayrettepe station if you want to reach Taksim Square .

For Sultanahmet, you need to change again at Yenıkapı. From there you can also travel to Kadikoy by the same metro line but you will need to change again, depending on where you are going. So the bus is probably a much better option to get to Kadikoy.

The new metro M11 line runs from 6:00 until midnight and will cost you ₺20 ($0.70/€0.65). Then you need to pay for each transfer separately.

You cannot, however, pay by cash or a credit card. You have to go buy the Istanbulkart from the automatic machine at the airport metro station. It costs ₺60 ($2.07/€1.92), then you need to add money on the card sufficient for your travel. You can use one card for multiple passengers, as they are not personalized.

Istanbul Airport to Hotel By Private Shuttle Transfer – Feel Like VIP

A shuttle transfer from Istanbul’s New Airport is undoubtedly the fastest and most convenient way to get anywhere in Istanbul . It is an ideal option if you have heavy luggage and want to get to the hotel as quickly as possible.

With a shuttle, you can be sure that:

  • the transfer price is fixed and, unlike a regular taxi, cannot increase during the trip
  • you’ll go straight to your final destination without extra transfers, buying transport cards, and finding your way out of the terminal
  • the driver meets you at the exit of the arrivals area with a sign, which saves a lot of time
  • you can pay for your transfer online or on the spot with a CC which eliminates the need to change money at the airport
  • if needed, child seats are available too

Private transfer is much better than taking a taxi since you pay almost the same amount of money without standing in lines waiting for a cab at the airport. You do everything in advance and have a driver pick you up at the exit.

There are two types of IST airport private transfers by shuttle : individual and group transfers.

Individual shared transfer service ( like this one ) works great for those who travel by themselves (or in a small group) and want to get directly to the door of their chosen accommodation without overspending on taxis or private transfers. Since the fare for it is cheaper than taking a cab.

With this shuttle service, you get to share the vehicle with other people but all passengers travel to the same neighborhood and drop-offs are done in turn.

There are also completely private transfers that cost more per ride but where you get to be in a vehicle alone, like this air-conditioned airport transfer with meet & greet service .

NOTE (!): Refunds for the prepaid transfer are available only if cancelations are made no less than 24 hours before a trip. It’s also best to inform the driver (whose details you’ll get after the booking) in case the flight is delayed.

More private transfer options & prices

IST Airport to City Center By Taxi – Why Better to Avoid It

If you don’t want to pre-book a transfer, you can catch one of the yellow or blue taxis in Istanbul airport upon arrival. The price for the taxi is only slightly lower than what you pay for a private transfer but you need to deal with walking to the taxi area and waiting in line with other people before getting your cab.

Also in the end, there is a high chance of paying much more for the ride since taxi drivers tend to take advantage of tourists by applying extra charges on top of the main fee.

The payment also should be made in local lira, so you need to exchange money before jumping in a car. It’s possible to pay by card, but there will be an additional charge of 5-6%.

Things to remember when considering a taxi in Istanbul (IST) airport:

  • payment is only in cash and in Turkish lira
  • black taxi cars mean a premium class which means you will end up paying much more (!)
  • yellow/blue cabs are economy-class
  • the fare for a ride from IST airport to the center of Istanbul ranges between ₺1050 – 1750 (~$35.50/€33 – $60/€56). But you need to be ready if the driver tells you a higher amount since there is an extra payment for waiting in a traffic jam

From Istanbul Airport to City Center By Car – Should You Do It?

transfer from Istanbul airport to hotel

Renting a car in Istanbul airport to go to your accommodation can actually be a great idea but only in three following cases:

  • If you are staying outside the Istanbul center (not just Istanbul Old Town but many other central neighborhoods), especially in the distant areas with the goal of medical tourism, visiting family/friends who live away from touristy routes.
  • If you are planning day trips or weekend trips from the city. After all, there are a lot of interesting highlights near Istanbul just a short drive away.
  • If you plan to drive outside Istanbul to check out other beautiful cities or possibly go on a weekend trip and only after that return to Istanbul. If you want to drive from Istanbul to Izmir , Bodrum , or Marmaris (or anywhere else), getting a car right after the flight will be a better idea than returning to pick it up later.

If you need to hire a car directly at the airport, do it through DiscoverCars , so you can pick up a vehicle directly at the terminal:

2.) How to Get From IST Airport to Sabiha Gökçen Airport

If you have a layover in Istanbul and need to reach Sabiha Gokcen Airport from IST airport within a short period of time, it is easy to travel between these two airports. And here is how.

You need to take a direct bus HV iST-13 (Havaist) where the ride lasts approximately 110 minutes if there is none or light traffic. For the cost, expect to pay ₺172 (~$5.85/€5.30).

Another way, more convenient, but also more expensive is a taxi or private transfer. The transfer like this one price starts from €85 but includes a large group of people. A taxi can be both cheaper and more expensive, depending on the traffic situation and the honesty of the taxi driver.

Istanbul Airport Transfer If You Arrive at Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) Airport

How to get from istanbul sabiha gokcen airport to city center .

In the same way as IST airport, Sabiha is also well connected with Istanbul’s central neighborhoods and there are five ways of transportation to use. I am talking about them all below in detail but before I get there, you need to remember one thing.

In order to reach Karakoy , Galata Tower area, or Cihangir for example on the European side (all touristy areas), you’ll need to transfer by ferry from Kadikoy because there is no direct type of transportation unless you book a private transfer . The same comes for Arnavutkoy , Nisantasi , Balat , and anywhere in the Fatih district.

Taksim and Yeenikapi areas are the only neighborhoods on the European side that are well connected with Sabiha by direct bus from the airport.

But below are more details:

Airport Transfers From Sabiha Gokcen By Bus

The easiest way to go from Sabiha airport to Taksim has always been by bus. Havabus is the only carrier that provides bus services to Kadikoy, Taksim Square, and Yenikapi. Buses depart from the international terminal and it’s very easy to find them. To reach any other place, you need to hire a private transfer or be ready to do bus or ferry hopping.

Once you exit the terminal and cross the road, you’ll see a few different lines where people wait for their bus. Just ask someone in line which bus they are waiting for. Unfortunately, Sabiha Airport is not as modern as the new IST airport, so there is no separate area for buses and no clear signs. Yet, it is still very easy to find your bus since the airport is small and everything is close.

Havabus buses depart every half an hour from 6:30 am to midnight. But here is the official schedule (in Turkish only). Travel time from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Taksim Square on a good day with moderate traffic takes about 1.5 hours. The ticket price is ₺102.50 (~$3.50/€3.25) per person and you pay inside the bus.

Istanbul Airport Transfer From Sabiha By Train

The train is also a great and cheap option to travel from the airport as there is a straight M4 line going from the airport terminal to Kadikoy station, which is very close to the Moda neighborhood and Kadikoy Ferry Terminals.

The journey only takes about an hour, which is faster than a bus and the train also avoids traffic making this transport more reliable. The cost for the ride is only ₺15 (~$0.50/€0.45).

The downside of the metro, however, is that the train can get full of people, and traveling with large suitcases might become very inconvenient. Just for luggage handling, buses or transfers are handled more easily.

If your journey continues to Sultanahmet, you have to make another transfer to Marmaray train at Ayrılık Çeşmesi (or Marmaray Tüneli). This is one stop before Kakidoy and again, this is not the most convenient transfer for traveling with luggage as you have to walk between stations. From there it is a quick ride under the Bosphorus to Sırkecı or Yenıkapı stations, depending on where you are going.

If you need to go to Karakoy or Taksim, you could technically make another transfer to T1 or M2 lines, but at this point, it is much easier to take a direct bus there.

Another option to cross the Bosphorus is by taking a ferry to Eminönü or Yenikapı but you might be further away from your accommodation from a ferry terminal than a train station.

From Sabiha Airport to Istanbul City By Taxi

Istanbul Sabiha Airport (as well as IST airport) has a fairly large number of taxi drivers who do not work officially and try to cash in on tourists. Always be careful if taking a taxi on the spot. The cost from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Taksim Square should be around 50 euros.

Sabiha Gokcen to the City by a Shuttle Service

Another option of how to get from Sabiha to Taksim, Sultanahmet, or just your hotel in general is to arrange a private shuttle service. This luxurious one-way transfer option  is now on sale and costs less than 30 euros per person.

It depends on where you are going, but most likely this will be cheaper than getting a taxi, and if you are traveling as a couple or in a small group, this is really the best price for the value of convenience and comfort.

No matter which option you choose, make sure to allocate extra time. Due to heavy traffic delays happen often. On our first visit to Istanbul , we met a few random people at the terminal and later in the airport shuttle who missed their flights because they were stuck in a traffic jam and got late.

As you can see, getting from Istanbul airport is not hard and you shouldn’t be thrown off by the city’s size. The transport is modern and well-marked. And if you ever get lost or in doubt, you shouldn’t have a problem asking somebody for help with directions.

When I help others build their own Turkey itinerary, the first thing people ask me is what are the best things to do in Turkey that should be on a travel bucket list. Well,…

Thankyou very much for this detailed explanation on airport transfers. Its much needed for first time travellers like me! Your blogs seem very interesting! Is there any blog on hotels and booking in turkey?

I am glad to hear you found it helpful! As for the hotels and bookings, I’d recommend you use a booking platform from outside the country since they have the highest number of properties for Turkey. Other aggregators to use are hotels.com and trip.com. They are also great alternatives to booking when making reservations from Turkey if you don’t wish to use VPN.

Excellent information. May I ask where is the best place for someone to meet someone arriving to this airport? Can my friend enter the new airport and meet me at the luggage pick up area?

Hi Jerry, as of now, both airports in Istanbul have 1 terminal where there is a special area for people to meet arrivals.

I assume you’ll be flying into the IST airport (where most long-distance international flights usually arrive). There, you pick up luggage near the passport control area which is closed for everyone who was not flying in, and then walk to the ‘meet and greet’ section in the arrivals hall where your friend can meet you.

Everything is well organized in both airports, but IST is just bigger and you need to cover longer distances but there is definitely a good signage and designated area for friends and family to meet arrivals.

very uselful information, thank you

How to get from Istanbul Airport to City Center

Istanbul New Airport (IST) started operations on 29 October 2018. All of the passenger flights from/to Istanbul are currently served by Turkey ’s newest and largest airport. As the airport is located about 50 km northwest of Sultanahmet, the heart of historic Istanbul , it’s useful to know how to get from Istanbul Airport to City Center .

There are few ways for getting into the city center from Istanbul Airport and all of them are described below.

Havaist Bus from Istanbul Airport

The airport bus service called Havaist is one of the best options for reaching the city center from the airport. Havaist bus is serving more than 60 different points of the city of Istanbul and Istanbul New Airport. All of Havaist buses are white and has air-con.

Operating hours : 04:00 – 01:00 daily, departing every 30 minutes

Price : 12-30 TL, depending on the distance

The most preferred destinations for tourists are Taksim Square and Sultanahmet. Bus ticket price for a trip from the airport to these central locations are:

  • Bus fare from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Taksim Square - 18 TL
  • Bus fare from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet - 18 TL

Important! If you want to travel by Havaist buses, you need to use Istanbulkart  for payment. They don’t accept cash or credit card. Istanbulkart machines can be found at the departure point of Havaist buses at Istanbul Airport, so you can buy Istanbulkart and put money into it just before getting on the bus. You can use Istanbulkart for all public transportation within the city.

IETT Bus from Istanbul Airport

IETT bus is another bus company serving different routes between Istanbul New Airport and Istanbul City. All IETT buses are yellow and have air-con. IETT bus tickets are a bit cheaper than Havaist but a trip from the airport to the city center by IETT bus can take much more time as theses buses stop at many bus stops along the way.

Price : IETT bus fare for a trip from Istanbul Airport to the city center is 5.20 TL

IETT routes :

  • H-1 Mahmutbey Metro - Istanbul Airport
  • H-2 Mecidiyekoy - Istanbul Airport
  • H-3 Halkali - Istanbul Airport
  • H-4 Atatürk Airport - Istanbul Airport
  • H-6 Masjid-i Selam / Arnavutkoy - Istanbul Airport
  • H-7 Hacıosman / Sarıyer - Istanbul Airport departures
  • H-8 Hacıosman / Sarıyer - Istanbul Airport

Taxi from Istanbul Airport to City

The quickest and easiest way to get to the city center from the airport is by taxi . However, in most cases it is the most expensive mean of transport as well. You will see many taxis once you get out from the airport and you should pick one that is in the line.

Taxi fare from Istanbul New Airport to the city center can be anywhere from 100 TL to 150 TL. As the fare is not fixed and will be calculated by a meter, depending on the distance, traffic conditions and the route, it can cost you much more than expected.

The maximum number of passengers in an Istanbul taxi is 4.

There are 3 different colored taxi services at Istanbul Airport - yellow, light blue and black taxis:

  • Yellow taxis are the cheapest and the trip from Istanbul Airport to the city center should cost you around 140 TL for Taksim and 150 TL for Sultanahmet.
  • Light blue taxis are about 15% more expensive than yellow taxis.
  • Black taxis cost 2 times more than yellow taxis.

Another concern is that not all Istanbul taxis are honest, especially in touristic areas. Sometimes they see tourists as an easy way to make more money and might try to overcharge you, so insist to go by the meter.

Istanbul Airport Private Transfer

If you come in a group or with a family, the most comfortable and convenient way for getting from Istanbul Airport to the city center is by a private airport transfer that can be booked in advance. The driver will be waiting for you at the exit of your terminal and will bring you directly to your hotel. Private transfer is more reliable than taxi at Istanbul Airport. Private airport transfer can be booked here: Istanbul Airport Transfers .

Metro from Istanbul Airport

The metro service is still not available at Istanbul New Airport as it is currently under construction and shouldn’t be available until 2020. The M11 metro line will run from the airport via İhsaniye, Işıklar Otogar, Göktürk, Kemerburgaz and Kağıthane to metro station Gayrettepe in the district of Şişli. Gayrettepe is a station in Beşiktaş area from where you can transfer to M2 metro line and travel all the way to the city center.

Train from Istanbul Airport

In the future, Istanbul Airport will have a fast railway connection (HST – High Speed Train) via the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, allowing passenger to travel quickly between the European and Asian part of Turkey. The railway will provide a direct connection by public transportation between Istanbul New Airport and Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen Airport. This prestigious project is known as the Northern Marmara Highway.

Istanbul Airport Metro Line M11

The long-awaited Metro Line M11 finally started its routes in January 2023. Giving Istanbul airport’s passengers the possibility to travel super-fast and comfortably to the city of Istanbul, the airport subway is expected to become the most popular transportation mode among IST passengers. For the time being, the driverless M11 covers a 34-km distance from Istanbul Airport to Kâğıthane, while a further expansion during the first semester of 2023 will link Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe Station, giving the line a total length of 37.5km.

Metro Line M11 is the fastest subway line in Turkey, traveling at 120km/h. Estimated to be able to handle up to 800.000 passengers per day, it combines speed with low prices. On the other hand, comfort is among its advantages as well. Trains are brand-new, equipped with all the latest tech systems, and designed to offer a pleasant transfer experience.

The Istanbul airport metro line serves, for the moment, 7 subway stations. Hence, after leaving the airport (IST terminal and Cargo terminal stations), M11 calls at İhsaniye, Göktürk, Kemerburgaz, and Hasdal before ending its journey at Kâğıthane.

Our Tip: After arriving at Kâğıthane, you can hop on Metro Line M7, whereas once Gayrettepe Station is added to M11’s itinerary, Istanbul Airport will be linked to Metro Line M2 and the Metrobüs network (Zincirlikuyu Metrobüs Station) at Gayrettepe.

The Time Schedule of the Istanbul Airport Metro Line

Metro Line M11 leaves the airport every 8 minutes, heading to Kâğıthane (and to Gayrettepe from the middle of 2023) and providing frequent transfer services from Istanbul Airport to Istanbul. Although its timetable isn’t set yet, it is expected to operate similarly to the other Istanbul metro lines, that is from approximately 06:00 am to midnight. Hence, unfortunately, the Istanbul airport metro doesn’t run at night.

Line M11 is scheduled to make a few stops on its way to minimize its traveling time. Thus, the subway journey from Istanbul International Airport to Kâğıthane lasts 24 minutes, while the Istanbul airport metro line needs only 12 minutes to get to Göktürk in the Eyüp district.

The Istanbul Airport Metro Station

The new subway station of Istanbul International Airport lies opposite Exit 11, on the front side of the car park. Being within a 300-meter distance from the terminal’s entrance, it is easy to be located. Nevertheless, as the IST terminal is vast, reaching the metro station can be tedious and time-consuming. In the future, a second station is expected to be added to the airport’s complex. However, no further info is to be found about the exact timeline of this project.

Subway Fares & Prices from and to Istanbul Airport

To begin with, subway tickets can’t be bought via cash or bank cards. On the contrary, you’ll have to buy a rechargeable card -Istanbulkart- and top it with money (using only cash). Hence, Istanbul airport metro tickets can be purchased only via Istanbulkart. Costing 60₺ (2.94€/3.10$), Istanbulkarts can be purchased and loaded at the automatic machines lying at the airport subway station. The price for a one-way ticket is 9.90₺ (0.48€/0.50$), and as the line’s construction is progressing and its traversed distance is getting longer, the ticket cost will be up to 12₺ (0.59€/0.70$). Children under the age of 6 travel for free.

Our Tip: Istanbulkart isn’t a personal pass. One Istanbulkart can be used to buy tickets for multiple passengers. Therefore, if traveling with a company, you can buy only one card and use it for both your transfers.

Is there a metro line from Istanbul Airport?

From January 2023, the long-anticipated Istanbul airport Metro Line M11 began its operation. Running from the airport to Kâğıthane, it provides fast and comfortable transfer services and is expected to reach Gayrettepe Station by the middle of 2023.

How do you pay for the metro in Istanbul?

Tickets for the Istanbul airport metro line are available via the rechargeable Istanbulkart. Thus, you’ll have to purchase an Istanbulkart from the airport station’s automatic machines and load it with money in order to pay for your subway tickets.

How To Get From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) Airport To Istanbul City Center: 4 Easy Ways

Photo of author

This website uses affiliate links. For more information, click here .

If you’re planning a trip to Istanbul and flying into Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), it’s important to know the best ways to get to the city center.

There are two airports in Istanbul, and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, approximately 47km away from the historic district of Sultanahmet and the top tourist attractions.

But don’t worry, even though it’s far out of the city center, there are some convenient and easy ways to get from Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to the city center, no matter what time of day you land.

Whether you prefer the convenience of the metro, the comfort of a Havabus bus, the ease of a hotel transfer, or the affordability of city buses, here are your options to consider for a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Key Takeaways: The Best Way From SAW to Istanbul City CENTER

If you don’t have much time and need an answer fast, here is an overview of the best ways to get from SAW to Istanbul city center:

  • Havabus – our recommended way. It takes you direct to Taksim and is comfortable. The journey is about 1.5 hours to 2 hours, depending on traffic.
  • Metro – there are 2-3 changes required and it takes 2 hours to reach the city center. This is the cheapest way to Istanbul city center from SAW.
  • Private Transfer – the best way for those with lots of luggage. You can prebook in advance or book with one of the transfer operators at the airport.
  • Taxi/Uber – may be your best option if you arrive after midnight and before 6.00am, but do book using Uber to get an idea of costs. This is the most expensive way, and not recommended.

Distance of Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to Istanbul City Center

SAW-Airport-Turkey

Istanbul sits on two continents. Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is located on the Asian side, but Istanbul city center is on the European side.

Most tourists taking domestic flights will depart or arrive from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), as most international flights will land at New Istanbul Airport (IST) on the Europe side.

However, this is not always the case. We flew from London to SAW with Pegasus, which is an international flight, so make sure you check which airport you land in first. Turkish Airlines also fly to SAW.

The distance between SAW and Istanbul City Center is around 46km.

There are two neighborhoods in the city center; Sultanahmet, the historic neighborhood where you’ll find The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, The Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace, and Taksim, a popular neighborhood where you’ll find Istikal Street, Galata Tower, and many of Istanbul;s museums.

To get from Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to Central Istanbul, it takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes by car, but if you plan to use public transport in Istanbul , it can around 2 hours to reach the city center.

The metro is cheap and efficient, and you can pay for your ticket with your contactless credit card.

While this option provides a direct connection to Kadıköy, it does require two changes to reach the city center, which may not be the most comfortable mode of transport for those with heavy luggage.

You also need to walk from the metro station to your hotel, which may be a distance from the metro station. This is something to consider before you opt for the metro as your mode of transport.

How to Take the Metro from SAW to Istanbul City Center

Entrance to the metro at SAW

To take the metro from SAW Airport, upon leaving the baggage hall, turn left and head to the end of the Arrivals Hall. You will see some escalators near the COVID testing area, which will take you down to the lower levels for the metro.

The metro then takes you directly from SAW to Ayrılık Çeşmesi (Kadakoy) via the M4 Kadıköy-Sabiha Gökçen Airport metro line. This journey takes 1 hour and has 21 stops.

To get to the city center from Ayrılık Çeşmesi, you will need to change onto the Grey Line (B1) and depart at Yenıkapı for those staying in Eminonu, or change again onto the Green Line (M2) to get to Taksim.

The entire metro journey from SAW to Istanbul city center takes 2 hours, including changing metro lines.

2. Havabus Shuttle Bus (The Most Convenient Way)

The Havast Bus at SAW

For those seeking a comfortable and direct transfer, the Havabus bus service offers a convenient alternative to the metro.

These buses operate from Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) and take you to Istanbul city center, specifically Taksim Square and Kadikoy Pier.

If you are staying in Eminonu or Sultanahmet, you will need to transfer onto the metro from Taksim Square or take the tram to where you are staying.

Havabus shuttles have English-speaking drivers, so no need to worry about language barriers.

How to Take the Havabus Airport Shuttle from SAW to Istanbul City Center

Havabus in Taksim

The Havabus is really easy to take from SAW to the city center. The bus departs from outside the bus station, opposite the Arrivals Hall at Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW).

To find the Havabuses, exit the Arrivals Hall and cross the road. You will notice a building directly across – this is for the City Buses, and is where you can purchase bus tickets to take you to other destinations in Turkey such as Cappadocia, Izmir and more.

Next to this bus station, there is an outside area filled with coaches. There is one coach parked at the front with the words “Havabus” printed on the side. Turn right when you see this bus and you will find a row of all the Havabuses parked.

They each head to different locations, so be sure to ask the driver for Taksim to be directed to the right bus.

You can pay using contactless payment card on the bus, which at the time of writing was 125 Turkish Lira. Alternatively, you can pay the driver directly with cash. There are ATMs inside the Arrivals Hall of the airport.

The bus will drop you off on a side street just up from Taksim Square. It’s a 5 minute walk to Taksim Square Metro Station from where the bus drops you off.

The bus takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. I took this bus at 8.00am during rush hour traffic, and it took 2 hours in total.

Buses depart at 30 minute intervals, either on the hour or 30 minutes past the hour. You can see the full timetable here. The buses run from 6.30am until 00.30am.

Note on IETT Public Buses

You can also take a public bus from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Kadikoy on the Asia side of the city. From there you can get a metro or ferry to the city center.

The buses that takes you from SAW to Kadikoy is the E10 and E11 , and you can find the timetables for them here.

3. Hotel Transfer (Best For Those With Heavy Luggage)

Many hotels in Istanbul offer airport transfers or welcome pickups from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to their premises included in the booking, or as an additional fee – it’s best to check with your hotel first as they may have the best rate.

If you don’t have a hotel transfer included, you can either pre-book one in advance, or book one at the airport from the operators in the Arrival Hall.

We always recommend booking in advance to get the best rate.

How to Take A Hotel Transfer from SAW to Istanbul City Center

airport shuttle counters at SAW

If you have arrived at Sabiha Gökçen Airport and didn’t get your transfer sorted, don’t fret. You can simply book your hotel transfer from one of the operators in the Arrival Hall.

Once you leave the Baggage Hall, turn right, and just before the ATMs you will notice a couple of counters with “Shuttle” or “Transfer” written on the sign. There are around 2-3 operators here, so ask around to see which one has the best deal.

All the hotel transfer operators are in this section, so you don’t need to wander down the hall to find any other operators.

4. Taxi / Uber (A Last Resort)

taxis at SAW

We would never recommend taking a taxi in Istanbul unless in absolute need, as too often the taxi drivers will try to scam you or rip you off.

However, if you are arriving at Sabiha Gökçen Airport late at night, or in the early hours of the morning, you may not have much choice.

Since the metro stops at midnight, and the last Havabus leaves at 12.30am, if you are arriving after these hours you will either need to pre-order a hotel transfer or take a taxi.

If you left it too late to book a transfer, this is your only option. We recommend you book using Uber, as this will at least allow you to negotiate costs up front. You can expect to pay between 1000 – 1600 Turkish Lira ($32 – $50 USD) for a taxi depending on the time of day.

No, there is no direct shuttle service between the two airports in Istanbul , SAW and IST. You will either need to take a taxi or get the metro. The metro is your cheapest option, but it takes about 3 hours. A taxi will take you one hour.

Final Thoughts

Navigating from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to the heart of Istanbul should not feel stressful, and the good news is that it’s not.

There are many transportation options to suit any travelers preferences and requirements, but the option you choose will largely depend on your time frame, budget, and the time you arrive at SAW.

We hope this guide helped you plan your journey ahead of time and that you have a smooth and enjoyable start to your Istanbul adventure .

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

‘Unparalleled’ city crowned Europe’s most stress-free travel destination

Whether it’s the chaos of the journey or a generally unsettling vibe once you’ve arrived, holidays can sometimes generate more stress than the intended relaxation.

If you’re looking to channel your inner zen while travelling over the coming months, Europe’s most stress-free travel destination has been crowned – so you can head on your hols without unnecessary grief.

Hailed as ‘stunning’ and ‘unparalleled’ by various Reddit threads from enthusiastic visitors, the beautiful French city of Nice can now take the crown as the least stressful travel hotspot.

The new research assessed 25 European cities across various factors, including congestion levels, the percentage of the population with convenient public transport access, the number of saunas and wellness locations, and the number of parks and nature locations.

Construction sites, beach areas and city areas were also taken into consideration, and a formula was used to calculate a final score out of 100 – with Nice racking up an impressive 75.4.

So, what makes the capital of the French Riviera so special? As per the figures, from HAYPP , a whopping 94.6% of the city’s population has convenient access to public transport, while there are 97 spas and wellness spots and 49 natural gems.

There’s also a relatively high proportion of beach to city, with 0.5km2 of golden sands.

Elsewhere, Oslo in Norway came in second place with a score of 75.2, while the Austrian capital of Vienna was recognised with 68.2.

Further down the list, Turkey’s Istanbul had the highest number of spas and wellness spots at 366, ending up with a score of 60.1.

Things to do in Nice , France

Want to get in on the action? From bougie eats to sandy beaches, there’s so much relaxation to be found in Nice.

For starters, the coast is characterised by sparkling blue waters – and there’s plenty of choice, with a few hotspots including Castel Plage, Blue Beach, and Coco Beach.

And, whether it’s a facial or a massage you’re after, there’s R&R to be found at the likes of La Parenthèse, Espace Bien-être, and Deep Nature Nice.

If you’re after a culinary experience, the likes of Le Chantecler and Bocca do just that (though they’re at the pricier end of the spectrum).

For something a little more affordable, Nice has an array of markets on offer selling fresh local produce, including the Cours Saleya Provencal Market.

With all this in mind, it goes without saying that tourists have been falling in love with Nice left, right and centre.

‘Nice is incredible,’ wrote @pie_12 th in a particularly generous Reddit review of the French coastal city. ‘The beaches are perfect, the food is unparalleled, the open air market is amazing. All in all its one of the best places I’ve ever visited.’

And for @Nikiaf, their visit was the ‘highlight’ of their holiday across France a few years ago.

Promenade des Anglais in Nice, complete with sparkling blue waters and palm trees

‘We went in early July so it was beautifully warm and the beaches were a nice spot to be, but the city itself is quite charming and the food we ate was very good without being overly expensive,’ they penned.

‘You’re also not excessively far from some other interesting places to visit, like Monaco.’

How to get to Nice , France

There are direct flights available from London to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport through Ryanair, easyJet and Air France, all taking around 2 hours and 10 minutes.

And from Manchester, easyJet offers a non-stop journey at the 2 hours and 25 minutes mark.

However, if the mere prospect of an airport increases your stress levels, it’s entirely possible to get to Nice without even stepping foot on a plane.

Naturally, it’ll take considerably longer – but it’s a viable option if you’re curious to try a slower travel approach.

Restaurant fronts pictured along the Cours Saleya, Nice

The Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord takes between 2 hours and 15 minutes and 2 hours and 37 minutes, offering the potential for an overnight stay or a flying visit (potentially past a boulangerie or two).

Then, there’s the high-speed TGV train from Paris Gare de Lyon directly to Nice Ville. Though the longer trains take up to 7 hours and 45 minutes, the fastest services will get you there in just 5 hours and 41 minutes – which, arguably, isn’t too bad considering Nice’s location right down in the French Riviera.

When to go to Nice , France

Nice certainly isn’t short of a few sun rays – so naturally, the best time of year to visit if you’re wanting a bit of vitamin D is the summer.

In June, the highest average temperatures dip up to around 24C, while throughout July and August, the mercury generally reaches highs of 27C.

Coming into the autumn months, September maintains a balmy 24C, and in October and November, you can expect highs of 20C and 16C respectively.
