The 20 Best Movies That Are Over Three Hours Long, Ranked

The 10 worst robots in the 'transformers' movies, ranked, the 10 best arthouse mystery movies, ranked, read update.

No matter the time period, time travel movies have always been popular. Whether it is the latest Ryan Reynolds and Netflix collaboration The Adam Project or the sci-fi action masterpiece The Terminator , time travel fans are spoiled for choice. Netflix in particular has plenty of great movies in the genre worth visiting, and some of the best time travel movies on Netflix will have you watching them over and over again.

In Netflix time travel movie The Adam Project , Ryan Reynolds plays a fighter pilot from the future, who crash lands in the present and meets his 12-year-old self. Together they must save the world in a journey that harkens back to Amblin classics from the 1980s while featuring some great needle drops.

Time travel stories have always been a popular narrative choice, with the highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame , fitting in the genre. Videogames such as Mortal Kombat 11 also use time travel to great effect. But with The Adam Project being a Netflix original, there are more time travel movies on Netflix to watch after seeing Reynolds quip his way through another memorable performance.

Updated on May 28, 2023, by Ty Weinert:

10 'naked' (2017).

Rob ( Marlon Wayans ) is about to marry the girl of his dreams, Megan ( Regina Hall ). But after a night out with his best friend results in Rob waking up naked in an elevator, he must race to the altar to make it in time. Failing that, Rob wakes up again in the elevator, realizing he is trapped in a time loop and must relive the hour over and over again.

Working like a mix of The Hangover and Groundhog Day , Naked will appeal to anyone who enjoyed those screwball comedies. While it is not one of the best time loop movies , it still offers some laughs and is a good enough way to kill an afternoon on the couch.

9 'Captain Nova' (2021)

Like The Adam Project , Captain Nova follows a fighter pilot who is sent back in time to stop a catastrophe. Nova ( Kika Van De Vijver ) finds herself transformed into her younger self due to her journey through time, however, making it hard for adults to take her seriously as she warns them of the dangers to come.

Hailing from the Netherlands, Captain Nova makes for a nice change from the American movies that dominate the time travel genre on Netflix. Due to its protagonist's youthful transformation, Captain Nova is a kid-friendly take on the formula and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

8 'See You Yesterday' (2019)

Produced by legendary director Spike Lee , See You Yesterday follows two teenage scientists, who are attempting to create a time machine. After one of their older brothers is killed in a police shooting, the pair activate their machine to travel to the past and save him.

While still following the conventions of time travel movies, See You Yesterday stands out with a plot that focuses on relevant social issues. By bringing light to matters that are still plaguing society four years after release, the film is a unique choice within the time travel Netflix catalog.

7 'In the Shadow of the Moon' (2019)

Beginning in 1988, In the Shadow of the Moon follows Thomas Lockhart ( Boyd Holbrook ), a police officer determined to become a detective. When his city is plagued by a serial killer, Lockhart begins investigating, eventually discovering the killer comes back every nine years. As the case deepens, time travel eventually becomes a factor.

In the Shadow of the Moon feels like a callback to the detective thrillers of the '90s, like Se7en . While it does tend to lose focus as more outrageous plot points are introduced, In the Shadow of the Moon remains a solid choice for anyone looking to discover their next crime obsession.

6 'Synchronic' (2019)

Another quality entry in acclaimed duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson 's trippy shared universe , Synchronic stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as paramedics and lifelong friends. After a new drug sweeps their city, resulting in the deaths of its users, the pair investigates after Dornan's daughter goes missing.

The film delves into time travel in ways that will not be spoiled here, but needless to say Synchronic is a trippy film with a central mystery that unravels over time. Both leads excel in their roles and share great chemistry, with Mackie, in particular, delivering a fantastic performance that shows what he can offer when given more meaty roles outside the MCU.

5 'ARQ' (2016)

Waking up to intruders breaking into his home, an engineer ( Robbie Amell ) finds himself trapped within a time loop. With each death sending him back to the start of the invasion, he works to defeat his pursuers and escape with his lover ( Rachael Taylor ).

ARQ works as a sci-fi spin on films such as Happy Death Day , with the audience learning new information alongside the protagonist with each subsequent loop and eventual death. While not as charming as Happy Death Day , ARQ still offers an enjoyable take on the genre.

4 'When We First Met' (2018)

When We First Met follows Adam DeVine , of Workaholics fame, as he repeatedly goes back in time to try and win over the girl of his dreams ( Alexandra Daddario ). Being a romantic comedy, the film stands apart from other time travel movies that focus on more serious consequences.

While We First Met does not offer much new to the genre, though DeVine gives an admirable performance to help carry the film. Fans of his stand-up or the aforementioned Workaholics should have a good time watching his numerous attempts to escape the hellish nightmare called "the friend zone."

3 'Long Story Short' (2021)

Waking up the morning after his wedding to discover that his life is jumping forward in time every few minutes, Teddy ( Rafe Spall ) is forced to use his dwindling time to stay with the woman he loves. With every jump causing them to drift further apart, time is running out for the bumbling lead.

Like When We First Met , Long Story Short uses time travel in a romantic comedy , albeit in a more urgent way. The Australian film was directed by Josh Lawson , known to audiences as Kano, the best part of the recent Mortal Kombat film.

2 'The Adam Project' (2022)

When fighter pilot Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) travels from 2050 to 2012, he is forced to work together with his 12-year-old self in order to get back home and save his deceased wife Laura ( Zoe Saldana ). The two Adams end up going on a journey full of heart and humor as they travel through time.

The latest in the long line of big-budget blockbusters on Netflix, The Adam Project is one of the best free movies you can access on the service. Reynolds is always a charming lead, and along with Saldana, they are supported by a winning cast that includes Mark Ruffalo , Jennifer Garner , and Catherine Keener .

1 'Mirage' (2018)

When Vera ( Adriana Ugarte ) and her family move into a new home, they discover that a boy died there thirty years ago. Finding a way to communicate with the boy in the past, Vera warns him of his death and saves his life, only to change the flow of time in the process.

As the best time travel movie Netflix has to offer, Mirage is a compelling mystery thriller from Spain. As more circumstances of the boy's death emerge, greater narrative threads are pulled into this time-bending journey, with Ugarte delivering a great performance as the central character.

The return of Bill and Ted's unique friendship, hilarious antics, and endearing optimism solidifies this film as a worthy addition to the beloved series.

10 Things About The Hobbit Trilogy That Make No Sense

This 70-year-old sci-fi film remains a milestone in practical effects, the fantastic four actor nearly turned down mcu reboot over past flops.

Time travel is one of the most commonly used concepts in sci-fi movies and while plots revolving around it are interesting on their own, sprinkling comedy into the proceedings is guaranteed to boost the quality. Movie lovers have thus gotten used to being treated to time travel comedies every single year

RELATED: 10 Comedy Movies That Changed The Game

Among the numerous options in the category, a few are more recommendable because they have a higher laugh-per-minute quotient than the others. This is because they have talented casts full of comedic actors as well as decent jokes and gags that stick to the mind long after the events come to a conclusion.

10 Historical Figures Pour Into The Present In Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Keanu Reeves might have earned his seat on the table of the coolest action stars but he has been in a number of amazing comedies too. One of those is Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure where two teenagers struggling to pass their history assignment go back in time to actually interact with the figures they are researching on.

For history buffs, the movie is a blast as it features comical depictions of Napoleon Bonaparte, Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, Socrates, and Ludwig van Beethoven. As respected as these figures are, the movie treats them as caricatures by thrusting them into all sorts of awkward situations once they are transported to modern times.

9 Fortunes Change For A Group Of Friends In Hot Tub Time Machine

There have been many creative ways to travel back in time and in Hot Tub Time Machine , it all happens via a hot tub at a resort. The comedy begins with the cliché plot of friends going on a vacation on an island but soon find themselves in 1986 after deciding to relax in a tub.

RELATED: 10 Movie Actors Who Are Great In Both Comedies And Dramas

Throughout the film, the likable cast that includes naturally funny actors like Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson gives audiences every reason to smile. However, it's the numerous interesting scenarios that pop up in the new time period that make the movie exciting. One of those involves one of the friends failing to transform back into his younger self because he was born after 1986.

8 There Is A Major Culture Clash In Black Knight

Among the numerous underrated comedies of the 2000s is Black Knight , where Jamal, a theme park employee accidentally gets transported back in time to 1328 England. There, the citizens hold him in high regard until they realize he isn’t who he says he is.

Starring Martin Lawrence at his peak, the movie is packed with endless visual gags, mostly stemming from Jamal trying to incorporate modern practices into medieval society. The verbal exchanges are hilarious too and so are the costume differences since he insists on wearing his jeans and shirt at all times.

7 Back To The Future Has One Of The Greatest Movie Characters

A movie where a teenager threatens his own existence by preventing his parents from falling in love is definitely one that’s guaranteed to delight and Back To The Future doesn’t disappoint. Much of the credit goes to Emmett "Doc" Brown who has gone on to be considered one of the greatest ever movie characters .

Doc's physical appearance and actions are main the reservoirs of humor. There's always the threat of something going wrong too, even when a problem has been solved, hence creating endless anxiety. Additionally, the movie proves itself superior to other sci-fi and comedy offerings by focusing more on storytelling rather than visual spectacle.

6 A Teenager's Wish Comes True In 13 Going On 30

The limitations that come with being young can be frustrating, that’s why 13-year-old Jenna keeps wishing she was an adult in 13 Going On 30. Interestingly, his wishes come true when she wakes up to find out that she is not only 30 years old but has also been transported from 1987 to 2004.

RELATED: 10 Funniest Female-Led Comedies Of Today

13 Over 30 is hoisted by strong performances by Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Andy Serkis, but it’s the former who shines the most as her character tries to make sense of what's happening. As expected, most things go wrong for the adult Jenna and while her experiences are funny, they also serve as cautionary moments for those dreaming of better lives than the ones they have.

5 In Click, An Architect Can Remote-Control His Life

Life would be interesting if one could fast-forward or rewind their lives and that’s the idea Click explores to humorous effect. In it, an architect named Michael can skip or go back to events he desires the most.

While this seems like a good option to have, the movie goes the classic things-go-wrong route when the remote start operating by itself after learning he only desires success. It thus fast forwards him to a promotion and then a decade later when he has become boss, making him miss out on important family events. The quest to discard the remote and reverse time then starts.

4 The Adam Project Blends Action & Laughs

To many fans, The Adam Project is one of the most satisfying movies of 2022 because of the healthy friendship between the younger and older versions of Ryan Reynolds; character, Adam. In it, a dystopian fighter pilot from 2050 meets a child version of himself after he crash-lands in 2022.

As is the case with most Ryan Reynolds movies, there are plenty of goofy moments that make every single scene enjoyable. These are blended with incredible action sequences as well as aerial dogfights. The villain is more laughable than threatening too, hence the quest to defeat him becomes more of a fiesta than a dark journey.

3 Everyone Is Dumb In Idiocracy

A high IQ is highly beneficial in the real world but not so much in the society depicted in Idiocracy . Events in the comedy revolve around a U.S. Army librarian named Joe who finds himself in the year 2505 after participating in a hibernation experiment. Since technology has advanced so much, people don't need to be smart to survive.

RELATED: 10 Hilarious Comedies Ruined By One Single Scene

As weird as the society is, Joe's value increases because he is literally the one-eyed man in a village of blind people. The President thus gives him the task of solving most of society's problems, resulting in a fun-filled tale that also covers themes such as commercialism, overpopulation, dysgenics, and corporatocracy.

2 A Woman Rewinds The Same Date Night In Meet Cute

Among the more recent offerings in the genre is Meet Cute , where a solution is given to a boring life. Since Sheila's life has become meaningless, she decides to relive the same night multiple times using a time machine.

The movie has its plot weakness, but luckily it has strong witty leads in Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson, who easily cover up any cracks. Numerous strong jokes are exchanged too but what audiences will find more intriguing is how the time travel device plays on social media by enabling the lovebirds to delete and edit sections of their lives.

1 When We First Met Emphasizes On Perfection

Similar to Meet Cute, the Netflix film, When We First Met also focuses on the same date night. However, while the night in the previous film is perfect enough to be revisited again and again, this one is so blemished that the and keeps trying to correct it.

The movie thus provides commentary on modern-day dating and the desperation to impress. Watching the man mess up is funny but watching him go back in time multiple times is inspiring as it highlights the importance of resilience and dedication in everyday life.

NEXT: 10 Good Comedies That Would Have Been Better As Dramas

You need to watch the most fascinating time-travel movie on Netflix before it leaves next week

Before he went blockbuster, director Colin Trevorrow delighted indie audiences with the 2012 twee sci-fi Safety Not Guaranteed .

comedy time travel movies on netflix

In 1997, magazine writer John Silveira was working for Backwoods Home Magazine when his publisher, Dave Duffy, asked him to tell a joke. Apparently, the magazine was short on material for the classified ad sections, and Duffy was chill enough to let writers slip in some funnies.

“John, give me a couple of jokes,” Silveira recalled Duffy telling him in 2010. So Silveira did as he was told, and came up with a gag about a time machine. He recycled the opening lines to an unfinished novel, which read as follows:

“WANTED: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. P.O. Box 322 Oakview, CA 93022. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.”

It was a joke. In the early days of the internet, this ad managed to go viral before that was a real term. It was read aloud by Jay Leno on TV and discussed on NPR’s Car Talk . Years later, screenwriter Derek Connolly came across the ad, believing it to be real — or, rather, to be sincere. “There was something really sad about it all,” said Connolly , who was inspired. “What if he is really lamenting something from his past that he wants to go back and fix. That’s what drew my attention.”

After contacting Silveira, Connolly wrote the screenplay for what would become the 2012 sci-fi indie hit Safety Not Guaranteed , which is leaving Netflix on August 14 and is worthy of your time before then.

Remembered as the movie that put Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow on the map, Safety Not Guaranteed also happens to be a picture-perfect example of a dying breed: that of high-concept genre movies with twee sensibilities.

In Safety Not Guaranteed , Darius Britt (Aubrey Plaza) is a depressed twenty-something working as an unpaid magazine intern for Seattle Magazine . Like a lot of young adults in the years after the financial crisis, Darius is stuck at home and struggling to find direction.

During a pitch meeting, scummy reporter Jeff (Jake Johnson, committing to a more competent variation of his Nick Miller from New Girl ) pitches a story about an amusing classified ad — one that reads just like the one from 1997 — in Ocean View, Washington, a podunk beach town. With the pitch approved, Jeff recruits Darius and Arnau (Karan Soni), a studious and virginal science major, to come with him. Jeff has ulterior motives, but the story still moves forward, with Darius posing as an interested party to the ad’s writer, supermarket employee Kenneth Calloway (indie royalty Mark Duplass).

What then unfolds would appear to be a rudimentary romantic comedy, if not for the time travel stuff and the eccentricities of leads Plaza and Duplass, each playing up themselves as authentic outsiders to Hollywood’s plastic molds. Filmed during Plaza’s stint on Parks and Recreation , Darius is less morbid than April Ludgate, though I imagine the two would get along well debating Bloc Party albums. Duplass’ Kenneth, meanwhile, looks like a dumpier John Krasinski, with disheveled brown locks and a tight denim jacket who drives around in a beat-up yellow Datsun.

Safety Not Guaranteed

Safety Not Guaranteed stars Aubrey Plaza, Karan Soni, and Jake Johnston, in a romantic-comedy about an eccentric ad seeking partners for a time travel experiment.

Seen through the eyes of anyone other than Darius, Kenneth is a loser. When his old crush (Kristen Bell, in a surprise supporting role) emerges to describe him as “one of those guys who you kind of know has a crush on you but he’s really nice and so you’re really nice back” and “the type of guy who you couldn’t easily fit into your life,” you either feel sorry for Kenneth or you agree with her (or both).

Darius, who doesn’t fit anywhere, falls for Kenneth; it’s little wonder that she’s head over heels when Kenneth sings an original song about stepping out of life’s normal rhythms. Surprising, the tension of her trying to get a story out of Kenneth never feels as severe as you think it probably should. As the two develop a relationship over Kenneth’s “training” program (including a heist at a science lab that still elicits laughter from the gut), it’s never that Darius is lying to Kenneth, but rather how Kenneth might be lying to Darius, that creates the biggest sizzle in the story’s stakes.

A subplot for the film lies in Jeff, a radiant source of cologne, booze, and Alka Seltzer, who initially wants only One Thing: To sleep with an old hottie, Liz (Jenica Bergere) from his high school days. At first glance, Jeff loses interest upon learning Liz is not the preserved 18-year-old siren still alive in his memory. But encouraged by Arnau — who is later encouraged by Jeff to seize the day in his own way — Jeff revives a fling, only to realize the size of the void in his own life.

Safety Not Guaranteed ends with victories for many of its characters, timid Arnau included, but Jeff ends on a downer. Tears run down his cheeks as he drives drunk on a go-kart, a lit cigarette wedged between fingers. Even when Darius and Kenneth (minor spoilers) successfully get away and Jeff raises his fist in cheer, there’s still nothing left for Jeff to do. Unlike the other characters surrounding him, he’s lost his chance. He’s got nothing. The sun has set.

Mark Duplass Safety Not Guaranteed

Mark Duplass stars in Safety Not Guaranteed as Kenneth Calloway, an eccentric man who builds a time machine.

When Safety Not Guaranteed premiered in 2012, critics loved it, though many commented on the film’s twee elements, which feel ripped from the mid-2000s. In her review, critic Meredith Borders remarked the film can come across as dated. “We were all blissfully free of the Garden State phenomenon,” she wrote, “only to have director Colin Trevorrow yank us back in.”

They’re not wrong. Safety Not Guaranteed has precisely that familiar flavor belonging to movies like the aforementioned Garden State , Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist , and especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that still-great Michel Gondry picture preceding Safety Not Guaranteed as the premier hybrid rom-com sci-fi. When awkward Arnau tries to tell Darius that she’d look good in tight leggings that girls wear, she brushes him off, in what feels like a light jab to the Zooey Deschanels of the world. (Notice Darius later wearing those leggings at the film’s climax.)

In its defense, Safety wasn’t the only movie working in this twee vein all those years ago. 2012 also saw the release of Ruby Sparks , in which Paul Dano literally writes the girl of his dreams into life, and the following year saw About Time , in which Domnhall Gleeson learns he’s capable of time travel and uses that power to romance Rachel McAdams. Movies of this caliber are a dying breed, however; last year’s similarly retro-styled Psycho Goreman remains a little-seen gem, everything original gets dumped on streamers, and the pandemic box office has made it appear that only comic-book movies make money these days.

What’s compelling about the so-called tweeness of Safety , though, is that it is the work of Trevorrow, a filmmaker who then soared from the indie world to franchise filmmaking at a dizzying speed. Three short years later, Trevorrow was at the helm of Jurassic World , and by the end of the year, he was slated to direct Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker . (In the aftermath of Trevorrow’s exit, the abundance of verbal Star Wars references in Safety Not Guaranteed has to sting.)

It would have been fascinating to see Trevorrow stretch his legs further in the indie world before getting rocketed into the stratosphere of mega-budget films. In 2017, Trevorrow returned to non-IP filmmaking with the critically panned drama The Book of Henry , a movie I still haven’t seen but have had described to me in such great detail that I refuse to believe is a real movie. (After I file this story I’m watching it on Netflix , where it’s also streaming. I’m committed now.)

Safety Not Guaranteed still exists as a promising start for a storyteller with a keen investment in universal human emotions, one that feels real in spite of whatever time-travel shenanigans may or may not be unfolding off-screen. That is perfect for, well, Star Wars. But I often wonder what else we could received from Trevorrow had he not been so successful out of the gate. If only we could travel back in time, you know?

Safety Not Guaranteed is now streaming on Netflix until August 14.

It’s like winning the lottery and thinking about what you would go back and do again.” Though the actress insisted there’s a beauty to just accepting your life and any past mistakes without going back to tinker with them, she did offer a heartwarming reason why she’d love to sneak into a time machine if she could. “My mother’s parents died when I was quite young,” she shared, “so I would like to be able to go back and know those people, as an adult.”

Keanu Reeves , Ted himself of the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure franchise, says he’d eye a couple of periods that are on his wish list. “I’d like to be there in the 1600s,” he shared with BuzzFeed, quipping that he’d always wanted to see “who really wrote the plays of Shakespeare…cause I don’t really think it was ‘Shakespeare.’ I’m an Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford [guy],” he noted, referencing a peer of the Bard, who some believe wrote the famous author’s plays and poems. He also expressed to Pedestrian TV a desire to travel back to “when the early globe, Earth, was formed,” so that he could get a taste of “that real first air, like, when it was really good.”

7. Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

John Cusack , Rob Corddry , Craig Robinson , and Clark Duke star in this comedy about a bunch of guys who, thanks to the titular hot tub, get another chance of revisiting their wild high school years back in 1986. Better yet, it even manages to engender a twinge or two of heartfelt nostalgia for the most culturally embarrassing of decades.” As Cusack lovingly noted to Entertainment Weekly , “It’s a ridiculous film. You’re pretty much either sold with the title, or it’s not for you.”

We've found the best Netflix comedies to keep you laughing throughout the year

[l-r] Melissa Mccarthy, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne in Bridesmaids, one of the best netflix comedies

The best Netflix comedies keep getting strong, as this list lost no titles this month — and gained a super-watchable new series. And to bring a perfectly up-do-date list to you, we do two things: watch comedy movies, shows and specials — and keep our eyes on the newest additions to Netflix.

For that last part, every month we comb through the list of what's new on Netflix to see what's coming and going. For example, Bridesmaids and Insecure just arrived. With this research, we've kept an up-to-date list of the shows, movies and specials that will put a smile on your face and possibly have you laughing so hard you get tears in your eyes, all from the comfort of your own couch.

Our list of best comedy shows and movies on Netflix contains plenty of different styles, so whether you prefer dark comedy, satire or downright silliness, you're sure to find something you'll really love. Maybe you can even revisit some of your old favorites, as there's a wide enough selection to ensure that Netflix is one of the best streaming services .

Some of the best Netflix comedies included sitcoms that found a larger audience thanks to Netflix, such as Community and Seinfeld (also on our best Netflix shows list) as well as stand-up specials from the likes of Bo Burnham and Hannah Gadsby, just to name a few. We bet you'll discover something new and hilarious to keep you cracking up for years to come. And when you want something a bit more real, check out our best Netflix documentaries list.

The best Netflix comedies right now

The best netflix comedies — shows, i think you should leave with tim robinson (editor's choice).

tim robinson and a co-star in the Calico-Cut Pants bit on i think you should leave with tim robinson

There's a time in every awkward moment when someone should just get out of the room, but they refuse to leave, and make it all the more awkward. And that's the not-so-hidden meaning behind the title of this series from Tim Robinson (Detroiters). As long as you find its cringe-level humor funny (have you paid yet?), ITYSL will become one of your favorite shows, and you'll be quoting it with friends for a long time. Just don't order "a sloppy steak" or go on any "adult" ghost tours. — Henry T. Casey

Editor's note: Season 3 of I Think You Should Leave is coming on May 30th, 2023.

Issa Rae stars in Insecure

On loan from HBO, Issa Rae's Insecure arrived with a ton of meta questions about Max sharing custody. Push those aside for a moment and realize that we should also be happy that Rae's show is getting a larger platform. Insecure explains the modern Black experience through the lens of Rae's own sense of humor, following long-time friends Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) in their late 20's.

Universally-praised by critics as one of the best comedies of the last decade, Insecure spent five seasons looking at the ups and downs of relationship drama, among other things.   – Henry T. Casey

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97% Stars: Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Lisa Joyce Watch now

Ali Wong as Amy holds a gun in Beef

Dark comedy BEEF, which comes from A24 and creator Lee Sung Jin, finds laughter inside of rage. And it all starts when a contractor named Danny (Steven Yeun) is on the wrong side of a parking lot where houseplant business owner Amy (Ali Wong) is trying to get out. Both are having very bad days, and they're both the kind of petty that creates a situation they should have been able to avoid.

Tackling everything from rich people fads to crypto trading, BEEF is beloved for how it manages to it can make you laugh while it explores mental health, class in America and the modern Asian American experience. Oh, and Amy's got a weird thing about guns. – Henry T. Casey

Rotten Tomatoes score: 99% Stars: Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, Joseph Lee, David Choe, Young Mazino, Ashley Park, David Choe, Patty Yasutake, Maria Bello Watch now

Key & Peele

Keegan-Michael Key as a teacher in Key & Peele

The first three seasons of the amazing Comedy Central sketch-comedy show Key & Peele are now on Netflix, and you don't need to stand in line for a hug with the president to get them. This series gave us our introduction to its titular comedy geniuses well before we knew that one of them was a modern horror god. So, watch all of Key and Peele's first three seasons chronologically before you start taking notes on your favorite episodes, and treasure each of their weird characters. From Key's Mr. Garvey and his inability to pronounce white names to Peele's lonely Wendell Sanders, Key and Peele is amazingly rewatchable.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 88% Stars: Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key Watch Now

Alison Brie and Yvette Nicole Brown in Community

While Dan Harmon is best known for the animated antics of Rick and Morty , his first big show was Community, a tale of study buddies. After the low-effort lawyer Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) is banned from practicing law, he tries to fix his situation at Greendale Community College, seeing it as an easy fit since his friend Dr. Ian Duncan (John Oliver) is a psychology professor, who will likely help him coast.

That doesn't happen, and Winger is instead forced to make friends to try and learn the right way. His study group includes big names such as Allison Brie and Donald Glover as Annie Edison and Troy Barnes, though Danny Pudi breaks through huge as Abed Nadir. Community is not just one of the best comedies on Netflix right now, it's one of the best sitcoms in forever. Oh, and the Community movie is finally happening!

Community is so good, it's on my personal list of the 5 shows on Netflix you should watch right now.   – Henry T. Casey

Rotten Tomatoes score: 88% Stars: Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover Watch Now

Derry Girls

Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Erin Quinn and Jamie-Lee O'Donnell as Michelle Mallon in Derry

Admittedly, you might need the subtitles for this one. Set in Derry, Northern Ireland during the tumultuous time known as The Troubles in the early 1990s, Derry Girls is heavy on the thick accents but also on the comedy. As a group of friends navigates their way through the equivalent of high school and gets into loads of trouble along the way, the irreverence and observational humor have made the series a cult favorite for fans, all of whom are awaiting the forthcoming fourth season with bated breath. Derry Girls season 3 just hit Netflix, concluding the series. — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 98% Cast: Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Ian McElhinney, Kathy Kiera Clarke, Nicola Coughlan Watch now

Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini in Dead to Me

How can you not automatically love a show that stars Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini? The story is intriguing enough on its own — a grieving widow being befriended by the very woman who caused the accident who killed her husband — but what happens from there is even more unbelievable (and great to watch). Dead to Me can get pretty dark at times but is always saved from being too bleak by the brilliant acting performances and moments of levity between the female leads. About to hit its finale, Dead to Me is also one of the biggest canceled shows of 2022 . — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89% Stars: Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, James Marsden, Max Jenkins, Ed Asner, Sam McCarthy Watch now

Christina Hendricks, Retta and Mae Whitman in Good Girls

While NBC may have chosen to end the series after season 4, the 50 episodes we did get throughout its run are pure gold. Sure, the premise is a little ridiculous — the idea of a housewife and mom turning into a criminal mastermind seems a bit far-fetched, but it’s hard not to cheer for the three women at the heart of the series even when they do some really, really dumb things (which happens often). One of the best Netflix comedies that was taken from us too soon. — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 85% Stars: Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman, Matthew Lillard Watch now

The Good Place

William Jackson Harper, Manny Jacinto, Jameela Jamil and Kristen Bell in the good place

While The Good Place follows many of the standard tropes present in sitcoms, it manages to stand out. What sets it apart is its ability to ask deep questions and do some real soul-searching, without ever coming off as preachy or detracting from its heart as a really funny show. The premise — what is the afterlife like and how you might fare depending on how you lived on this earth? — gives this series enough philosophical quandaries to explore, which it tackles in a hilarious but really genuine way. There are also some great guest appearances along the way including Michael McKean and Maya Rudolph. And the epic series finale makes The Good Place more than just one of the best Netflix comedies — it's one of the best shows of recent history. — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97% Cast: Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, William Jackson Harper, D'Arcy Carden, Jameela Jamil Watch now

Ricky Gervais and David Bradley in After Life

Admittedly, After Life has fewer LOL-worthy moments than you might expect from a one of the best Netflix comedies. That said, Ricky Gervais’ journey as Tony, a journalist who decides to just give up and be a terrible person after the death of his wife Lisa, is worth all the heartache that comes along with it. Of course, since Gervais did create and write the show as well as star in it, you’re guaranteed plenty of his sometimes-caustic humor mixed in to alleviate the tears you’ll no doubt shed along the way. Ending with its third season, After Life is another of the biggest canceled series of 2022 . — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 75%  Cast: Ricky Gervais, Kerry Godliman, Tom Basden, Tony Way, David Bradley, Ashley Jensen Watch now

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rachel Bloom and Vincent Rodriguez III in crazy ex-girlfriend

If you’re a fan of musical comedies, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is certainly one of the best of the genre. Each episode features hilarious original songs that only serve to elevate the generally more mundane moments in life. Star Rachel Bloom is insanely relatable as Rebecca, a lawyer who literally upends her entire life in New York to move to a town she doesn't know for a guy who doesn't even want to be with her. If that’s not a great premise for a sitcom, I don’t know what is. She certainly grows from there, but it’s an awkward and frequently hilarious journey. — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%  Cast: Rachel Bloom, Vincent Rodriguez III, Donna Lynne Champlin, Pete Gardner Watch now

Rose McIver in iZombie

Generally speaking, anytime you see a zombie on TV or in movies, they’re the scary kind. Not so on iZombie, where a plague has turned a whole host of people in Seattle into zombies that can pass as normal people by wearing wigs and makeup and buying brains from the black market to keep their appetites under control. Even if you never expected to be laughing at the walking dead, you certainly will be here. Rose McIver as medical examiner turned zombie Liv is ridiculously charming, and she’s just silly enough to keep the laughs coming throughout the show’s four seasons.  — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90% Cast: Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, Aly Michalka Watch now

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Ellie Kemper in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

If you were a fan of 30 Rock during its seven-season run, you’ll love Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, particularly because it has its two creators in common: Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. After Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) is rescued from 15 years spent in a cult, she moves to New York and is suddenly introduced to a cast of strange and wonderful characters who teach her how to live in the real world. Her naivete and lack of experience result in no shortage of outlandish experiences, but it’s her relationships with Titus (Titus Burgess) and Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) that really make this show so funny.  — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 96% Cast: Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, Carol Kane Watch now

Russian Doll

Natasha Lyonne in a subway in Russian Doll season 2

There’s something about Natasha Lyonne that lends itself so well to comedy, and Russian Doll, which she co-created with Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland, is the perfect vehicle for her frantic yet natural charisma to shine through. Lyonne plays Nadia, a woman who simply wants to go to a party but somehow keeps ending up living the same day over and over again in a constant loop. While not an inherently funny premise, it's what they do with that open-ended potential that will crack you up. Its strong second season went even loopier for its premise, and hit the feels even harder. — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97% Cast: Natasha Lyonne, Greta Lee, Elisabeth Ashley, Yul Vasquez, Charlie Barnett Watch now

Freeridge (2023)

(L to R) Keyla Monterroso Mejia as Gloria, Ciara Riley Wilson as Demi, Tenzing Trainor as Cameron, Bryana Salaz as Ines in episode 101 of Freeridge

Freeridge focuses on sisters Gloria (Mejia) and Ines (Salaz) who bring their own extra drama to their South Central Los Angeles. And if Mejia isn't a familiar name to you yet, she should be. Recently caught stealing scenes on Abbott Elementary and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Keyla Monterroso Mejia is a rising comedic force to be reckoned with. Gloria's the Type A-sister while Ines is used to leaning on her.

And in Freeridge, a series that spins out of Netflix Original On My Block, we track Gloria and Ines through a mystery involving a box that their they and their friends  Demi (Wilson) and Cam (Trainor) believe is cursed.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 86% Stars: Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Bryana Salaz, Ciara Riley Wilson, Tenzing Norgay Trainor Watch now

Grace and Frankie

Lily Tomlin (as Frankie) holds a lighter and what appears to be a joint while Jane Fonda (as Grace) holds a hand to her own forehead

One of the best comedy shows on Netflix, Grace and Frankie is an odd-couple series that's run for far longer than Netflix usually lets shows run. It also pulls another rare move by actually giving leading roles in a series to women in their 70's (and now 80's), and Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have proven that there's no reason not to. The series, which focuses on frenemies who start an alliance of sorts after their husbands leave them for each other, got rave reviews after some first season growing paints. Seasons 3 through 5 have a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and seasons 2 (91%) and 6 (83%) were also deemed winners. — Henry T. Casey

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89% Cast: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen Watch now

Murderville

(L to R) Conan O'Brien as Guest 101, Will Arnett as Terry Seattle in episode 101 of Murderville, one of the best netflix comedies

Terry Seattle (Will Arnett) is a foolish detective who is really full of himself. So, it makes sense that he's about to get a series of even more clueless partners. And they're all celebrities, from Conan O'Brien to Kumail Nanjiani. Heck Marshawn Lynch and Sharon Stone show up. And while Arnett's clued in on the "story" of the cases of the week (so to speak), his celebrity partners (who must solve the crime) don't have a clue. So they'll have to work together to find said clues.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 82% Stars: Will Arnett, Haneefah Wood, Lilan Bowden, Phillip Smithey Watch Now

George holding the golf ball in

If Netflix has been losing all of your favorite shows? Well, the good news is that it houses arguably the greatest sitcom of all time. So hit play on Seinfeld (turn on the subtitles if you want to see what they're yadda-yadda-yadda'ing about) and enjoy the antics of four of the most selfish New Yorkers this side of Newman. Trying to figure out where to start? Check out our guide to the 11 best Seinfeld episodes to watch on Netflix , which has excellent episodes to watch during your own personal "summer of George."

Tuca & Bertie

Bertie goes to HR in Tuca and Bertie

The hall of shows Netflix canceled way too soon has a permanent placard for Tuca & Bertie. This animated series looked to capture the Bojack crowd by having a brash toucan Tuca (voiced by Tiffany Haddish) and the anxious songbird Bertie (voiced by Ali Wong) who process the ins and outs of adult friendships. They live in the same apartment building and the show was so strong that fans desire to see more of the series led to it finding a home for season 2 on adult swim. We're wondering when that season will show up on HBO Max, where it would quickly become one of the best HBO Max shows and movies . — Henry T. Casey

Want more animation? We've got a whole list of the best Netflix anime movies and shows .

Rotten Tomatoes score: 98% Stars: Tiffany Haddish, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun Watch Now

Dear White People

Marque Richardson and Ashley Blaine Featherson in dear white people

Dear White People, which is based on the film of the same name, does a brilliant job using humor to highlight the important issue of racism and how it affects young black people. In this instance, a group of students of color attending a predominantly white Ivy League college come up against no end of obstacles. Creator Justin Simien's approach to the series allows his messages to effectively get across without ever wiping the smile off viewers' faces.   — Jennifer Still

Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%  Cast: Logan Browning, Antoinette Robertson, Brandon P Bell, DeRon Horton, Ashley Blaine Featherson, Lena Waithe Watch now

Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams in episode 104 of Wednesday.

I didn't expect to love Wednesday, a series where a teenage Wednesday Addams is dealing with burgeoning powers and trouble at school. First, she's expelled from Nancy Reagan High for simply defending her brother (with a completely malicious act of vengeance). Then, she's enrolled at Nevermore Academy, where her parents met. Here, she has to deal with a complicated social structure and a principal who is seemingly always out to thwart her.

Most of the humor in Wednesday comes from star Jenna Ortega's performance as the titular goth girl. Somehow able to make the character her own, Ortega drops droll, deadpan reactions to everything from the habits of her roommate Enid to the "normies" who live near Nevermore. Also, Luis Guzmán may not get a lot of time as her father Gomez, but he makes every moment count.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 71% Stars: Jenna Ortega, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan Watch Now

The best Netflix comedies — Movies

Bridesmaids (2011).

(L to R) Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig stand in a fancy hotel in Bridesmaids

Annie (Kristen Wiig) is going through it these days, and by 'it' I mean one of those strings of bad life moments. Broke after her own business went belly-up, freshly dumped and in a terrible situationship and working at an underpaid gig, Annie's not really ready for the social gauntlet that is being bridesmaid.

Her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph), though, doesn't know about all of that — and just enlisted Annie's help as her maid of honor. And, wouldn't you know it, everything goes wrong on the way to the altar.

Bridesmaids isn't just a great raunchy comedy, it's also a great story about friendship. Packed with a fantastic cast directed by the excellent Paul Feig, Bridesmaids is a movie we can keep rewatching. – Henry T. Casey

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89% Cast: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, Rose Byrne Watch now

Mean Girls (2004)

Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams and Lacey Chabert in Mean Girls

If, for some reason, you have never seen Mean Girls, it's time to fix that. Over two decades later, the film has aged practically perfectly, as the story of Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) trying to fit in is as relatable as ever.

While Cady first tries her best to fit into the clique of queen bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams), she quickly realizes that this is a path of misery. A phenomenal cast and ultimately quotable script help make Mean Girls completely 'fetch.'

Rotten Tomatoes score: 84% Cast: Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tina Fey, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, Jonathan Bennett, Lizzy Caplan Watch now

Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day movie image with Bill Murray and Stephen Tobolowsky

Classic Bill Murray comedies don't just hop onto streaming services every day, and Netflix just got one of the best. Phil (Murray) is a grump of a weatherman, sent to cover the least novel of stories: that annual moment where folks analyze groundhog Punxsutawney Phil's relationship with his shadow. But his frustration intensifies when he wakes up to realize that he has to do it all over again. And again.

Beloved by many for Murray's performance and the movie's appeal to most audiences — his bitterness mashed up with a strong morality tale invite all types in — Groundhog Day is one of the best comedy movies Netflix has right now. A classic, even. So watch it now before it leaves.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 94% Stars: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, Stephen Tobolowsky and Brian Doyle-Murray Watch Now

This Is the End (2013)

(L to R as themselves) James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride cowering in This Is The End

Movie stars: they're just like us. Seth Rogen (as himself) hosts visiting friend Jay Baruchel (also as himself), for a weekend of cannabis-enhanced snacking and goofing around. Talk goes from gluten-free diets to James Franco's odd behaviors faster than you can chuckle.

But once our heroes actually go to hang out with their friends, everything goes pear-shaped. That's because James Franco's houseparty just so happens to coincide with the end of the world. And these super-stoned buddies can't handle the news, because all of their interpersonal drama come out.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 83% Stars: James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson Watch now

Chicken Run (2000)

(L, R) Mac (Lynn Ferguson) and Ginger (Julia Sawalha) pointing to plans in Chicken Run

Not just one of the best comedies on Netflix (also one of the best family movies on Netflix ), Chicken Run is the antidote to the common family comedy. While living on a farm in Yorkshire, England, a chicken named Ginger (Julia Sawalha) discovers that owners Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) and Mr. Tweedy (Tony Haygarth) are more diabolical than they realized.

Bored with taking all the eggs their fowl can hatch, the Tweedys have come into possession of a machine that turns chickens into chicken pies. Fortunately, Ginger and the gang meet an American rooster named Rocky (Mel Gibson) who can help them escape.

Packed with snappy dialogue and imbued with energy from its stop-motion animation, Chicken Run is one of the few "fun for the whole family" movies that actually impressed parents.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97% Cast: Julia Sawalha, Phil Daniels, Lynn Ferguson, Mel Gibson, Miranda Richardson, Watch now

Easy A (2010)

(L to R) Amanda Bynes (as Marianne) and Emma Stone (as Olive) stand on the lunch-line looking at each other suspiciously in Easy A

One of Emma Stone's biggest early roles saw her play Olive (Stone), a teen whose life can't match the stories that get gossiped around. That said, one day she decides to make up a little lie about a steamy weekend, only for it to be overheard by the wrong classmate (Amanda Bynes), who sets up the worst game of Telephone ever. In short: everybody thinks Olive was up to something raunchy, and they've all heard different stories.

Stacked with a strong cast, including Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as Olive's understanding parents, and Thomas Hayden Church, Lisa Kudrow and Malcolm McDowell as the school faculty, Easy A is a fantastic ensemble comedy. Extremely rewatchable thanks to tons of charm, Easy A is one of the best Netflix comedies — at least until it leaves Netflix. Like many movies on this list, it's not a Netflix Original, so its time won't be long.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 85% Stars: Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Dan Byrd, Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Thomas Haden Church, Malcolm McDowell, Lisa Kudrow Watch now

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Rian Johnson's Knives Out was a twisty-turny noir that felt perfect. The news that Netflix hired Johnson for Knives Out 2 and 3? Well, that was met with a mix of excitement and potential disappointment. And while Glass Onion doesn't catch Knives Out's lightning in a bottle, it thankfully doesn't attempt to. Instead, detective Benoit Blanc (Craig) has a new pair of mysteries to solve, and it all begins with an invitation to hang out with a wealthy tech mogul (Norton) and his friends on a private island in Greece. The festivities are meant to center around a fake murder mystery, but that doesn't last long. While Glass Onion has a fantastic cast, it's Kate Hudson who gets the best lines.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 93% Stars: Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr. Watch now

Bullet Train

Bad Bunny in Bullet Train

If you wanted the love-child of Pulp Fiction and John Wick, and hoped it was clever, you'd be asking for Bullet Train. A hitman (Brad Pitt) with the code name 'Ladybug' is practically playing Dante from Clerks, as he's both unlucky and not even supposed to be here today. His task is to simply intercept an important briefcase. Unfortunately, said briefcase is in the possession of a pair of fast-talking brothers — Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry) and Tangerine (Aaron Taylor Johnson) — who are also assassins. Attempts to get (and keep) the briefcase keep taking place, and survival isn't guaranteed.

Then, you've got a whole list of other great cast members and a trio of cameos I won't spoil her. But for the announced cast, you've got music icon Bad Bunny, playing a hitman named The Wolf, who is out for revenge. And don't overlook a young woman (Joey King) codenamed The Prince who is far more trouble than she seems.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 53% Stars: Brad Pitt, Brian Tyree Henry, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Andrew Koji, Joey King, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benito A. Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny) Watch Now

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Will Ferrell and Rachael McAdams in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

You don’t necessarily have to be European to appreciate this movie. Will Ferrell, who wrote Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga certainly isn’t (though his wife is Swedish, hence his familiarity with the annual extravaganza of cheesy pop music). The movie takes you through the run-up to the Eurovision Song Contest through the eyes of Lars Erickssong (Ferrell) and Sigrit Ericksdóttir (Rachael McAdams), Icelandic musicians who want to represent the country at the competition. To say that the entire movie is absurd and ridiculous is an understatement, but that’s probably why it’s so funny.  — Jennifer Still

Bad Boys II

(L to R) Martin Lawrence as Marcus in a Klan robe and Will Smith as Mike in his cop uniform, pointing guns in Bad Boys II, one of the best Netflix comedies

Yes, Bad Boys II is not a critically-beloved comedy, but as action-comedies come, it's one of our favorites. Now that the partnership of Marcus (Lawrence) and Mike (Smith) has been established in the first film, the pair of loose cannons go on a raucous series of adventures trying to bring a drug kingpin (Jordi Mollà) down.

Bad Boys II sends Smith and Lawrence through a series of big set-pieces, including a mountain-side village and mine-field in Cuba. That said, Lawrence's most memorable scenes from the movie are of the smaller scale: intimidating the guy trying to take  his daughter out for a date and an accidental drug trip. – Henry T. Casey

Jackass 4.5

New Jackass cast member Zach Holmes is shirtless and wearing a kite, perched above cacti in an image from Jackass 4.5, one of the best Netflix comedies

The grossest gang in Hollywood is back, and they've even got new friends. Yes, Jackass has returned (again) with the B-sides version of Jackass Forever (which is on Paramount Plus ). This movie has a lot more interviews with cast than you might expect, so get ready to hear what life on the Jackass Forever set and how they were one of the first sets to resume filming during Covid (which explains how Johnny Knoxville's hair went from black to silver).

And when you hear Knoxville say "it just felt good," you know he's not talking about the stunts. Because some of these stunts (the plexi-glass one in particular) didn't feel good for those involved. Just expect some revolting moments, especially newcomer Zach Holmes' human sashimi incident.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 67% Cast: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Jason "Wee Man" Acuña, Danger Ehren, Preston Lacy Director: Jeff Tremaine Watch now

Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson star in Red Notice on Netflix

The genre of star-studded Netflix action movie is popular these days, but they're rarely as funny as the Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson-led Red Notice. Yes, Gal Gadot's here too, but she's barely there if we're being honest. Not beloved by critics, Red Notice is not the next big action franchise (but neither is the bigger-budget The Gray Man), though sequels are happening. That said, RR and DJ have fun bantering and bickering with each other, as they try and track a fortune down. – HTC

Best Netflix comedies — Standup

Bo burnham: inside.

Bo Burnham in Inside, one of the best netflix comedies

Released in May 2021, the latest special from comedian Bo Burnam — which he wrote, directed, filmed, and edited as well as starred in — was recorded entirely in his own home (or a space meant to look like it) on his own during the COVID-19 pandemic. There's no audience or crew, but there are plenty of sketches and variety songs that explore topics including sexting, mental health struggles and social media, among other topics. Being able to touch on serious subjects through the lens of comedy is refreshing and cathartic.  — Jennifer Still

Kevin Hart: I'm A Grown Little Man

Kevin Hart on stage in Kevin Hart: I'm A Grown Little Man

If you’re a fan of stand-up comedy, you can’t go wrong with any of Kevin Hart’s specials, especially I’m A Grown Little Man. The 2009 concert film became an unexpected hit and went a long way into turning Hart into the major movie star he is today. Throughout the set, Hart touches on everything from family to race and his close friends in ways that make even the most ordinary event out to be riotous stories you'll ever hear. If you’re looking for something to watch where the jokes don’t stop coming for the entire 72-minute runtime, this is one of the best Netflix comedies for you.  — Jennifer Still

Tig Notaro: Happy To Be Here

Tig Notaro on stage in Tig Notaro: Happy To Be Here

Tig Notaro is known for her deadpan brand of humor, but it's put to such brilliant use in Happy to Be Here. The stand-up special sees her discussing everything from marriage and parenting to parties at Ellen Degeneres' house and she does it all in such a way that you can't help but feel the same joy she clearly does while telling the stories. It’s so good that even after you’ve memorized the jokes, you’ll still want to watch it again.   — Jennifer Still

Hannah Gadsby: Nanette

Hannah Gadsby in Hannah Gadsby: Nanette

If you’re not familiar with Hannah Gadsby’s comedy, her 2018 special Nanette is a good place to start (but please be sure to move on to 2020’s Douglas too). Nanette isn’t your typical stand-up special, instead blending Gadsby’s penchant for immersive storytelling and stark honesty with comedy in a way that is sometimes jarring but always thought-provoking. It’s clear from some of the subjects in the special that Gadsby has faced her share of adversity, but her ability to find the brighter side and transform that pain into laughter is a gift worth enjoying. — Jennifer Still

It’s been a bit of a slow time of year for comedy movies, but 2024 has enough laugh-out loud gems to round out a list. And there’s a wide variety of sub-genres to pick from: musical reboots, existential animated kids’ movies, campy horror flicks, and even a DC parody.

So behold: the best comedy movies of 2024 so far. This list will continue to be updated throughout the year, and will be sorted in reverse chronological order, so the newest movies always show up first.

Ilana Glazer as Eden, a pregnant woman sitting and getting an ultrasound

Where to watch: In theaters May 17

Director Pamela Adlon ( Better Things ) gets nitty and gritty about the epic highs and lows of pregnancy in Babes , but the best part is the central relationship between two best friends. Eden (Ilana Glazer), a single yoga teacher, and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married dentist with two kids, have been besties for decades — and even though their life priorities are a bit different now, they make time for each other.

Eden finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand, and decides to go through with having the baby. It’s a new stage of their relationship, especially as Dawn struggles with balancing her job, her family, and her friendship with Eden, all while Eden embarks on this scary journey of single motherhood. It’s wickedly funny, but also says a lot about the strain adulthood puts on friendships. — Petrana Radulovic

The People’s Joker

Vera Drew, dressed as “Joker the Harlequin,” a mashup of Joker and Harley Quinn, superimposed over the famous “Joker Stairs” from Todd Phillips’ Joker, in The People’s Joker

Where to watch: Limited theaters

Director-star Vera Drew initially planned The People’s Joker as a found footage movie , pulling together clips from Joker’s past, present, and future to create a new Jokerfied experience. While the found footage element didn’t happen, the end result ( after a brief delay over rights issues ) is a breath of fresh, satirical air in our IP-saturated landscape, part of a new wave of trans-authored cinema that is shaking up what mainstream audiences can experience in trans film.

The People’s Joker cleverly uses the DC canon as grounding for the setting, an avenue to explore gender expression, and for comedy, subverting expectations of these well-known characters. But my favorite part of the movie is how Vera utilizes many different styles of animation from many different creators to create a mixed media effect. It’s unlike anything else you’ll see this year. — Pete Volk

Wicked Little Letters

Olivia Colman, surprised, holds a slice of cake on a plate in Wicked Little Letters

Where to watch: In theaters, or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon , Apple TV

The true story of the Littlehampton poison pen letter scandal of 1923 is a fairly depressing one, another in a long line of reminders that justice systems depend on people’s judgment, and people are notoriously prone to prejudice, stereotypes, and other forms of confirmation bias that get in the way of the truth. But Thea Sharrock’s lively (and heavily fictionalized) British comedy about the scandal addresses those points with a light perspective that offers a little uplift and a lot of good humor. International treasure Olivia Colman ( The Favourite ) stars as Edith Swan, a pious working-class spinster who starts getting obscene anonymous letters; Jessie Buckley is her neighbor, Rose Gooding, a foul-mouthed libertine accused of writing them, in an era where calling someone a “foxy ass whore” in print was enough to warrant a prison sentence at hard labor.

The absolute shock and disbelief Edith and Rose’s entire community feels over seeing words like “asshole” in print is part of the humor here, but a lot more of it comes from Jonny Sweet’s bouncy, winking script, which keeps the action zippy and highlights the ironies of an entire community full of hypocrites delighting in their self-righteous offense at the letters. (Any metaphor for today’s online communications is strictly intended.) Colman and Buckley’s performances add a terrific edge to it all, but this is an ensemble piece at heart, and Anjana Vasan as a lady detective trying to wade through institutional sexism rounds out the cast for a lively, sparky story that isn’t particularly believable as history, but sure lands well as funny, engaging metaphor. — Tasha Robinson

Drive-Away Dolls

Geraldine Viswanathan, Margaret Qualley, and Beanie Feldstein stand outside of what looks like a bar in Drive-Away Dolls

Where to watch: Digital rental/purchase on Amazon / Apple TV

Don’t get fooled by only seeing one Coen name in the credits; Drive-Away Dolls (or its original title, which still appears in the credits: Drive-Away Dykes ) has the same hilarious crime-caper spirit that marks all of the Coen brothers’ best early works.

The ’90s-set movie follows two lesbian friends (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) on an East Coast road trip with two clueless gangsters hot on their trail. Equal parts excellent friends-on-the-road movie and crime comedy, Drive-Away Dolls is an early contender for the most fun movie of 2024, and one that will likely be hard to beat. — Austen Goslin

Lisa Frankenstein

Kathryn Newton, with big hair, sitting at a school desk in Lisa Frankenstein

Where to watch: Peacock or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon / Apple TV

Sometimes, you just want to see Kathryn Newton wear increasingly elaborate ’80s goth outfits as she and an undead Victorian musician go around killing people who’ve wronged her.

Lisa Frankenstein is a loving homage-slash-parody of old schlocky horror comedies, and even though some of the connective tissue is missing from scene to scene, it’s a shockingly good time. — PR

Orion and the Dark

A hulking creature of darkness and a little boy stand on a cloud and look over at a huge full moon

Where to watch: Netflix

On its surface, Orion and the Dark seems like a standard fairy-tale-like children’s story about a scared boy meeting the personification of Darkness, who helps him get over his fears. But it takes a twisty turn when it’s revealed this story is being told by a grown-up version of that little boy to his daughter.

It’s not just a cute framing device, but one that warps the story and makes it way weirder than when it starts out (in the best way). — PR

Hundreds of Beavers

Two people in mascot-sized beaver costumes wear a Sherlock and Watson outfit in the snow in Hundreds of Beavers

Where to watch: Fandor, free with a library card on Hoopla, or digital rental/purchase on Amazon and Apple TV

“What if Looney Tunes, but for adults, and filtered through video games and silent slapstick comedy?” That’s the genius combination that makes Hundreds of Beavers one of the most special movies of the year, a pure expression of cinematic comedy that will have you laughing in stitches. The low-budget indie follows Jean Kayak (Ryland Brickson Cole Twes), a trapper trying to survive in the harsh winter of the Great Lakes region. He’s surrounded by hundreds of beavers (which are presented as people in mascot beaver costumes) who view him as a threat, and he must solve a series of problems and puzzles to survive and thrive in the harsh environment.

Ludicrously silly and packed to the brim with jaw-dropping gags and special effects on its limited budgets, Hundreds of Beavers is the funniest movie I’ve seen in years. It’s the perfect antidote for what has ailed mainstream American comedy for years, by actually bringing back jokes instead of just the tone of comedy. I can not recommend it highly enough. — PV

The three Plastics and Cady sitting on Regina’s pink bed, about to write in the Burn Book

Where to watch: Paramount Plus

Fans of the Broadway musical Mean Girls , based on the 2004 movie Mean Girls , have understandably bridled against some of the changes in this screen adaptation, from the many songs cut from the Broadway version to the casting of protagonist Cady Heron . But while it’s an imperfect translation of the stage experience, it still stands on its own as a lively, creatively staged movie that puts plenty of verve into its catchy, inviting musical numbers.

The performances aren’t out to replace the 2004 version of the movie: They’re new interpretations, delivered with big musical energy. This is a tremendously fun movie, designed to send people home singing. — TR

Self Reliance

Tommy (Jake Johnson) and a friend (Biff Wiff) stand together in a living room, with Tommy earnestly telling a story to someone offscreen in Self Reliance

Where to watch: Hulu

Jake Johnson’s directorial debut follows a man who’s so at sea after a breakup that he agrees to star in an underground reality competition where he tries to survive for a month with assassins trying to kill him. But Self Reliance isn’t the kind of manic thriller that premise suggests; Johnson told Polygon it’s much more of a mashup of two of his favorite movies : Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket and the Adrian Lyne thriller Jacob’s Ladder . That’s an odd combination of improbably dissimilar projects, but they coalesce into an offbeat indie comedy about human connection, and the mortifying ordeal of trying to be known by people who aren’t all that interested in the knowing.

Produced by The Lonely Island and featuring Andy Samberg playing himself in a pretty hilarious cameo, Self Reliance has some of the same dry humor and secret sentiment as the group’s movie Palm Springs , but with even smaller stakes and even less predictable storytelling. It’s goofy stuff, but it’s an enjoyably light story that’s designed to keep the audience guessing. And it’s just about impossible to watch without wondering: Would I do any better under these circumstances? — TR

5 best Netflix comedy movies you should watch on Memorial Day

Andrew Barth Feldman and Jennifer Lawrence in No Hard Feelings.

Memorial Day may be a somewhat somber holiday, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t have some fun on the long weekend. And judging from the dismal box office of both Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga  and The Garfield Movie , it seems like most movie lovers are already staying home this weekend. In that case, we’re going to share our suggestions for the five best Netflix comedy movies you should watch on Memorial Day.

Happy Gilmore (1996)

Beverly hills cop (1984), animal house (1978), bullet train (2022), no hard feelings (2023).

These five flicks really are among the top comedy offerings on Netflix. But two of them are leaving in June, so watch them while you can because you may not get a chance when a new month begins next Saturday.

Happy Gilmore is one of Adam Sandler’s most successful films, and also one of his most iconic characters. As a hockey player, Happy’s a bust. But his slapshot ability translates very well to driving the ball on a golf course. And in order to save the house of Gradma Gilmore (Frances Bay), Happy takes up professional golfing to raise the money on Grandma’s behalf.

  • 3 great Amazon Prime Video shows you should watch on Memorial Day
  • 5 great Netflix movies you should watch on Memorial Day
  • 5 great Hulu movies you should watch this Memorial Day

Standing in the way of Tiger Woods-like success is Happy’s terrible putting game and his nearly uncontrollable temper. The pro golf tour’s PR expert, Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen), tries to help Happy get a handle on his emotions, while Derick “Chubbs” Peterson ( Carl Weathers ) makes him a better golfer. But against Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), a professional golfer – and a real jerk –  Happy is going to need more than just skills and etiquette to come out on top.

Watch Happy Gilmore on Netflix .

There aren’t many action comedies that are better than the original Beverly Hills Cop . Ironically, Netflix is losing this film in just a few weeks, so it won’t be around when the new sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F , debuts on Netflix on July 3. Eddie Murphy originated his role as Detective Axel Foley for this movie, and it’s his presence that makes Beverly Hills Cop credible as both an action flick and as a comedy.

Axel is a Detroit cop who comes to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his friend, Michael “Mikey” Tandino (James Russo). Detective William “Billy” Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Sergeant John Taggart (John Shaston) try to keep Axel out of trouble while he’s on the West Coast, but they would have had better luck trying to keep the Pacific Ocean from making waves. Once Axel decides he’s going to do something, nothing can stop him.

Despite having more than its share of outrageous scenes, sometimes it’s the little moments like facial expressions that get the biggest laughs in Animal House . There have been many raunchy college comedies since Animal House , but none of those movies had comedy legend John Belushi as John “Bluto” Blutarsky.

Bluto and the rest of his Delta House fraternity are perpetually in trouble at Faber College. Yet, they never let that get in the way of an outrageous prank or a raging party. And when the Dean tries to have Delta House and everyone in it expelled from the school, Bluto and his friends escalate things even further.

Bullet Train is a very modern action comedy that puts Brad Pitt in the lead as an assassin with the very unflattering code name Ladybug. Additionally, Ladybug is so overcome by anxiety that he’s starting to rethink his life. First, he’ll have to survive one last mission on a Japanese bullet train.

Unfortunately for Ladybug, he’s not the only the only assassin on the train. The others include brothers Tangerine (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry), The Hornet (Zazie Beetz), The Wolf (Bad Bunny), and The Prince (Joey King). Ladybug is particularly taken aback when some of his rivals attempt to kill him. Every killer on the train has an agenda, even The Elder ( Shogun ‘s Hiroyuki Sanada). And if Ladybug wants to get out alive, he’ll have to start making some new friends.

Almost everyone hits a rough patch in their lives, but Maddie Barker (Jennifer Lawrence) is at a really low point in No Hard Feelings . She’s strapped for cash, her car and her home are nearing repossession, and she needs a lifeline. What she gets instead is an unusual job offer from Laird (Matthew Broderick) and Allison Becker (Laura Benanti). In exchange for dating their socially awkward son, Percy Becker (Andrew Barth Feldman), Maddie will get the car she needs.

Of course, no one told Percy about the deal. And he doesn’t know what to make of it when a beautiful older woman like Maddie aggressively comes on to him. Anyone else would have been scared off by Percy’s inept response to being courted. But not Maddie. She’s willing to go all the way, and then even farther than that.

Memorial Day is a special day to honor and mourn military personnel who died in the line of duty. Focused on those who served in the United States Armed Forces, it’s a time to visit cemeteries and memorials, raise American flags, and look toward a brighter future thanks to the brave sacrifice of so many others.

While you enjoy the day off, you might want to gather the family to watch an entertaining TV show with a military theme to keep with the focus of the day. • Burn After Reading is an underrated gem showcasing Pitt and Clooney's comedic timing and sharp political satire.
  • The film's acerbic critique of the American intelligence community has only gotten better with age.
  • With the upcoming release of Wolfs, now is the perfect time to revisit this Brad Pitt and George Clooney collaboration.

Although it is not their best-known collaboration, the Brad Pitt and George Clooney movie Burn After Reading recently arrived on Netflix and it's one of the pair's most underrated projects. Brad Pitt and George Clooney have appeared in a string of movies together throughout their screen careers, including three outings of the Ocean’s 11 franchise . The pair will soon team up again for the exciting action comedy Wolfs , a buddy comedy about two lone wolf fixers who struggle to work together when they are hired for the same job. This makes the timing of one of Netflix’s new arrivals perfect.

Pitt and Clooney’s history of screen collaborations began in 2001 with Ocean’s 11 , a remake of 1960’s Rat Pack crime comedy caper of the same name. Before the duo reunited for 2005’s sequel Ocean’s 12 , Pitt and Clooney collaborated again on 2002’s satirical thriller Confessions of a Dangerous Mind . This Sam Rockwell vehicle was written and directed by Clooney, who starred in the movie and gave Pitt a small role. The duo graced the screen again in 2007’s Ocean’s 13 and had one other collaboration before both stars played small roles in John Krasinski’s 2024 fantasy comedy IF .

Burn After Reading Is Now On Netflix - Why It's An Underrated Pitt & Clooney Movie

Clooney and pitt’s pitch black satirical comedy wasn’t appreciated upon release.

2008’s Burn After Reading is not only a great showcase for Pitt and Clooney’s superb comedic timing, but also one of the sharpest political satires of the new millennium. Since the blackly comic thriller was released only a year after the deservedly acclaimed No Country For Old Men , Burn After Readin g never gained the same critical attention as some of the best Coen brothers movies . However, the scathing satire is overdue a reappraisal. With a starry cast that includes Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, JK Simmons, Tilda Swinton, and Richard Jenkins, Burn After Reading is an underrated gem .

The plot follows a pair of gym workers who attempt to profit off a bitter former CIA analyst’s memoirs when they mistake his first draft for priceless political intel. This results in an increasingly silly, bloody shaggy dog story that makes a perfect companion piece to No Country For Old Men . Burn After Reading ’s acerbic satirical critique of the American intelligence community wasn’t appreciated upon release, possibly due to the many lazy satire movies that flooded multiplexes after the invasion of Iraq. This is a shame since Burn After Reading is a pointed piece of political commentary that has only gotten better with age.

Why Now Is A Great Time To Watch Brad Pitt & George Clooney In Burn After Reading

The upcoming release of wolfs makes a burn after reading re-watch necessary.

Since the upcoming Ocean’s 11 prequel won’t feature Clooney or Pitt, there is no better time for viewers to revisit Burn After Reading . Judging by its trailer, 2024's Wolfs will be a funnier, less brutal comedy that leans into action, whereas the Coen Brothers effort was more interested in paranoid satire. While Wolfs looks like a lot of fun, viewers who want to see the darker side of Pitt and Clooney’s shared sense of humor will need to seek out this underrated effort instead. Those who do watch Burn After Reading will be rewarded with one of Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s best-kept secrets.

The 9 best movies on Netflix in June

  • Watch Netflix original "Hit Man," starring Glen Powell, in June.
  • Favorites like "Crazy Rich Asians" and "La La Land" are also on the streamer this month.
  • We also recommend "Tangerine" and Will Smith in "Ali."

Insider Today

Here are the best movies coming to Netflix in June.

“Ali” (June 1)

comedy time travel movies on netflix

Will Smith gives one of the best performances of his career playing the iconic heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali. From his physical transformation to look like the champ to his voice and swagger, Smith pulls off everything needed to make an impressive Ali biopic.

But perhaps his greatest achievement is his collaboration with director Michael Mann to showcase the complexities of the man who, at the peak of his skills, was also fighting criticisms about his religious faith, opposing the Vietnam War, and infidelity.

“The Breakfast Club” (June 1)

comedy time travel movies on netflix

John Hughes' masterpiece made stars Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald , and Ally Sheedy — the poster kids for 1980s teen rebellion.

Following five high schoolers serving Saturday detention, Hughes unlocks the adolescent struggles of that time as he makes each character the complete opposite of the other, resulting in a powderkeg of emotions that is still powerful to watch on screen today.

“The Conjuring” (June 1)

comedy time travel movies on netflix

If you're looking for a good scare, watch James Wan's supernatural horror, which follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

If you want to explore the "The Conjuring" universe further, "The Conjuring 2," and the third movie, " The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It ," are also available.

“Dune” (June 1)

comedy time travel movies on netflix

If you want to see how " Dune " was adapted for the big screen before Denis Villeneuve's big-screen spectacle, check out David Lynch's wacky 1984 release.

Get ready for many questionable 1980s-era special effects, creepy characters, and a pug (no, a dog never appears in the book).

“La La Land” (June 1)

comedy time travel movies on netflix

If you need a feel-good movie, you can't go wrong with Damien Chazelle's musical love story.

From the beautiful Los Angeles settings and dazzling set pieces, "La La Land" is topped with performances by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, who play two people who fall in love in LA but eventually realize their true love is the arts.

“The Lego Movie”

comedy time travel movies on netflix

Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord's comedy talents are fully displayed in "The Lego Movie." They use a clever story with the geekiest elements of the Lego line to create this perfect animated comedy that has the rare ability to work for both kids and adults.

“Tangerine”

comedy time travel movies on netflix

Watch one of the best movies in recent Palme d'Or winner Sean Baker's filmography.

This comedy follows a transgender sex worker who discovers her pimp boyfriend has been unfaithful, so she goes in search of answers with her friend in a hilarious trek through LA on Christmas Eve.

Along with the talents on screen, Baker shows off as the entire movie was shot on a few iPhones.

“Crazy Rich Asians” (June 6)

comedy time travel movies on netflix

Jon M. Chu's beloved adaptation of the Kevin Kwan book made leads Henry Golding and Constance Wu into stars and introduced us to the comedy talents of Awkwafina.

Released in 2018, when studios rarely released romantic comedies, "Crazy Rich Asians" showed that they can still strike a chord with audiences when done correctly. And this one certainly does that with the chemistry between Golding and Wu, the focus on family and tradition, and the beautiful Singapore scenary.

“Hit Man” (June 7)

comedy time travel movies on netflix

The love affair with Glen Powell continues with this action rom-com from a script written by Powell and director Richard Linklater.

Based on a true story, Powell plays a part-time staffer at the New Orleans Police Department who poses undercover as a hitman in sting operations where those who hire him are arrested.

Powell is hilarious as the Gary character, who dresses in wild costumes and uses weird voices to elevate his undercover work. But things get complicated when he falls for a woman (Adria Arjona) who hires him to kill her abusive husband.
