Jane McDonald Chats Ahead of New Tour With All My Love

The tour comes to Glasgow and Edinburgh in Autumn

pixeltracker

The title “National Treasure” is one readily bandied about these days, but warm-hearted and witty Yorkshire lass Jane McDonald has to be one of the truest examples out there.

Jane’s story is a great example of a girl done good; first captured 25 years ago on BBC docusoap The Cruise , Jane became an overnight sensation – and has spent the years since forging a hugely successful career as a singer and TV personality.

Her solo shows have captivated audiences up and down the country, and now she’s back preparing to hit the road once more with an all-new tour With All My Love this autumn.

The new tour, Jane’s biggest to date, starts with two nights at Blackpool’s iconic Opera House, stops off at The London Palladium and will close with what promises to be an extra special tour finale at Leeds First Direct Arena.

“This is going to be the tour I’m most proud of – I can already feel it,” says a clearly excited Jane McDonald as she prepares for With All My Love .

The tour is still several months away, but already Jane is ‘buzzing, absolutely buzzing’ about the prospect of taking her show on the road once more.

“I feel like I’m a phoenix rising from the ashes in a way,” Jane says of her return to the road. “The flame had gone out, but the embers were still burning away in the background. Now they’re reignited and they are burning so brightly and so strong, I’m ready to come back.

“I am in a very good place. Something about being a bit older – I’ve got that ‘couldn’t care less’ thing now, I’ve let go of the angst that you get when you’re younger.

“Instead, now I just think ‘It’ll be right, it’ll be fine’, not worrying about every last thing. I’m excited about everything. The fear seems to have gone.

“I don’t think I have been this excited for a tour ever,” she adds, eyes glowing. “I have had a break and have a whole new energy for live performance and cannot wait to see my fans again as I’ve missed them.”

And the fans have clearly missed her too.

“Everybody is like ‘Thank God she’s back’… You never know if that will be the reaction though, do you?,” Jane laughs. “The reaction from fans has been humbling, so wonderful. I am just full of gratitude.”

Jane’s return to live performance will come three years after the death of her fiancé Ed Rothe in 2021. And despite her grief, Jane is seizing life and finding a new direction for her love – with this tour very much dedicated to her loyal fans.

“With age, I’ve learnt that nobody’s life is easy or wonderful all the time,” Jane said. “When you go through something tragic, it can take a while before you’re able to look up and see the blue skies again, for the joy to come back to life. But, when that joy does come back it’s even more precious than before. You start to feel good again and you want to share it.

“My fans have been through every part of my life for 25 years and I’m ready to say ‘I’m OK now, and I hope you are too’.

“It’s a two-way thing with my fans, we hold each other’s hands. I hold their hands and they hold mine.

“And you know what, I have a song I wrote for my mother ‘The Hand That Leads Me’ and thinking about it – it’s probably time now that I give that song to the fans. They are the ones that get me through, they make me sing and make me smile.

“Everything I do has love and my heart at the very centre of it, and I want this tour to say to my fans ‘Thank you for being around and waiting for me’.

“I’m in a good place so let’s have some fun.”

Jane is remaining tight-lipped about detailed preparations for the tour, other than hinting there are treats in store for fans, including new disco medleys – ‘ I already know that’s going to tear the roof off’ , emotional tributes and a show that is ‘ more personal than ever’ .

And for the first time, Jane will be playing piano during the live shows.

“The past couple of years, I’ve been so busy travelling to film the TV shows, I feel like I have been lost on plane journeys,” she said, “so it’s been nice to take the time to sit down, at home and look ahead to this tour.

“I’ve been sat at my piano, and I will be sitting down at the piano as part of the show too – which is something we haven’t done before. And I’m going to be talking about how I do it, how I go about writing, which is basically letting my fingers flow over the keys and then I’m off.

“It’s really very exciting to already see it take shape.”

Another first for With All My Love will see Jane touring with a major promoter’s backing, in the form of Live Nation’s Cuffe and Taylor.

“That is just fantastic,” she said. “My team goes back to 2009, and I’ve got to the stage where I have fantastic people by my side, and I’m in safe hands – those people will always be there.

“But this takes it to another level – and is probably why I’m enjoying myself so much already. I don’t have to even be thinking about the logistics side of things, never mind worrying about it like I have before.

“All that is taken care of, so I can just be ‘the artist’. It’s strange though, as I am still a bit of a control freak! No…make that perfectionist. But it’s lovely to have people with us making all the arrangements.

“Alongside the people who’ve been with me a long time, it’s now an absolute dream team.”

And hopefully Jane will be living the dream with her fans, sharing her ‘good place’, and bringing energy to venues across the country.

“The energy at my shows is always so special – it’s magical, honestly,” she said.

“It starts on the stage, and it goes out into the audience where it grows and it spreads, and it’s a whole circle because that energy comes back and we all feel it back again on stage. Open up your chakras, or whatever it is you believe in, and feel the energy in the room!

“But it’s so important to me in this job; if you can make somebody feel better through a performance, that’s brilliant, that’s the most important thing.

“ With All My Love – I sound like a Beatle… You know, ‘All You Need Is Love’, but it’s true – it’s so important. I’m thankful to the fans for giving me their love, it has helped me through and hopefully now I can reciprocate and give it back…”

With All My Love is presented by Cuffe and Taylor.

Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell belts his heart out in concert.

It’s been 14 long years since the “classic” members of Jane’s Addiction have officially toured together in North America.

Thankfully, that all changes later this summer.

Starting in August, lead singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins, and bassist Eric Avery aka classic Jane’s Addiction will hit the road for a nationwide 25-concert trek with special guest Love and Rockets.

That includes gigs at Atlantic City’s Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Saturday, Sept. 7 and New York’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 for the “Been Caught Stealin'” rockers on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

They’ll close their run with a pair of festival appearances in late September.

The band, which formed in 1985, didn’t perform together the past 14 years because Avery took a 12-year hiatus from the band from 2010-22 and Navarro skipped their 2022 tour with the Smashing Pumpkins due to a long COVID diagnosis.

Their last album comprised of new music was 2011’s “The Great Escape Artist.” According to Pitchfork, “the classic lineup has not recorded together since 1990’s  Ritual de lo Habitual . Last week, the group played a new song called ‘ Imminent Redemption ‘ at a London show.”

For those who can’t wait to see Farrell, Navarro, Perkins and Avery shred together for the first time since 2010, tickets are available for all Jane’s Addiction North American concerts as soon as today.

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming shows on sites like Vivid Seats ; the official on-sale is Friday, May 31.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Jane’s Addiction 2024 tour schedule

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Jane’s Addiction 2024 festival appearances

To close the late summer/early fall run, Jane’s Addiction will headline at a pair of festivals.

To make sure you’re up to speed on what to expect at both multi-day musical extravaganzas, we’ve got everything you need to know about both festivals below:

Jane’s Addiction set list

Most recently, Farrell, Navarro, and Co. played a gig at London’s Roundhouse on May 27.

According to Set List FM , here’s what they performed that evening:

01.) “Then She Did…” 02.) “Pigs in Zen” 03.) “Whores” 04.) “Been Caught Stealing” 0.) “Ain’t No Right” 06.) “Imminent Redemption” 07.) “Ted, Just Admit It…” 08.) “Jane Says” 09.) “Up the Beach” 10.) “Ocean Size” 11.) “Mountain Song” 12.) “Three Days” 13.) “Stop!”

Love and Rockets

Jane’s Addiction tour with Love and Rockets is technically a co-headlining jaunt.

The post-punk alt-rock group, which features members from Bauhaus and Tones On Tail, is known for their slinky late ’80s mega-hit “So Alive.” However, if you dig deeper into their catalog you’ll find under-appreciated jams like “No New Tale To Tell,” “Holiday On The Moon” and “Haunted When the Minutes Drag.”

For a closer look, you can find their complete discography here .

’80s and ’90s rockers on tour in 2024

Many groups that have been shredding since the 20th century are taking the tour buses out for a spin yet again this year.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

•  Stone Temple Pilots with Live

• Smashing Pumpkins

• Pearl Jam

•  Soul Asylum

Who else is pounding the pavement? Take a look at our list of the 58 biggest ’90s bands on tour in 2024 to find out.

Jane's Addiction tour will reunite band's classic lineup: Here are all the dates

S AN DIEGO — The best-known lineup of Jane's Addiction is reuniting for its first tour together since 2010. The Los Angeles-bred band will perform in 25 North American cities in August and September on a double bill with the English band Love and Rockets.

The tour opens with an Aug. 9 show in Nevada at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, followed by an Aug. 11 San Diego performance at Petco Park's Gallagher Square. It concludes Sept. 29 at the Evolution Festival in St. Louis.

This will be the first tour since 2010 to feature the best-known lineup of Jane's Addiction, which teams lead singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins. Avery returned to the band in 2022, but Navarro has been absent the past several years while recovering from the effects of long-term COVID. His place was filled by Roy Van Leeuwen and Red Hot Chili Peppers' alum Josh Klinghoffer.

Jane's Addiction's 2024 summer reunion trek was announced Monday morning by Live Nation, the tour's promoter. It comes on the heels of last week's one-off London performance by Farrell, Navarro, Avery and Perkins.

Of course, even the best of bands can be a fragile democracy, as Farrell acknowledged during a 2013 San Diego Union-Tribune interview conducted at that year's Coachella festival in Indio.

Likening the members of Jane's Addiction to farm animals, Farrell said: "Somebody is a bull, somebody is a lamb, somebody is a puppy and somebody is a pig. There are all kinds of different animals on the farm, but you need all of them.

"After 20-plus odd years of working with these guys, we kind of like each other a little more than we ever have," Farrell continued. "But we're all very different and have four different opinions on any subject. I do my best to keep the group together at any cost. When we hit the stage, we blast, we're all alive and it's a great thing to have the original lineup.

"It's rare. So, we'll see how long we can do it before somebody becomes ill — or a monk."

Tickets for all dates on the 2024 Jane's Addiction tour go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday.

A presale for Citi card members started at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, as did a presale for VIP packages. A presale for fan club members began Tuesday at noon, followed by a Ticketmaster presale at 10 a.m. Wednesday and a venue presale at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Because Gallagher Square at Petco Park is an entirely general admission venue, all tickets for the San Diego concert are priced at $75 each, plus service charges.

Michael McDonald’s Smooth New Memoir: What We Learned From ‘What a Fool Believes’

By David Browne

David Browne

For all its surface smoothness, yacht rock — and the artists who created it over the last few decades — can be turbulent below deck. Some of the musicians and singers associated with the genre (whether they want to be linked to it or not) can have dark sides, illicit pasts, insecurities, and surprising rock & roll antics sides.

As he reveals in his new memoir, What a Fool Believes , no one encompasses that dichotomy quite like Michael McDonald . That gently huffing mellow voice and electric piano often hid a wild lifestyle, at least during his early, pre-sober days in the music business when he was a member of Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers . McDonald unpacks some of those stories in the book, cowritten with, of all people, comedian Paul Reiser.

Here are a few things we learned from taking a ride on the good ship Cali Macca.

At least once, he and Walter Becker toyed with being part-time dealers.

But their adventures extended outside the studio. McDonald writes about how they came up with a scheme to “buy about a half ounce of some of that exceptionally pure cocaine” from a friend and “make some easy money (selling only to our friends, completely under the radar) but end up with a fair portion of blow for our own recreational consumption, free of charge …. What could possibly go wrong?”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, you mess with yacht macca at your own peril..

In the mid Seventies tension began to develop between McDonald and Doobies guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and their conflicting ideas on musical arrangements. When Doobies co-founder Pat Simmons told McDonald and others that he was thinking of “breaking up the band” around 1979, McDonald used that to make, he writes, “changes I felt had to be made before we could move forward.”

Without being super explicit about it, McDonald makes it clear that the Doobies had to choose him or Baxter. In light of McDonald’s “What a Fool Believes” being a ubiquitous hit at the time, the decision was apparently an easy one for someone to make. “I’m not sure what that says about me exactly (other than perhaps I’m more than capable of being an asshole),” he writes, “but at the time, I felt if we were to continue, it was necessary for the band to re-emerge as a different and cohesive entity.”  He did say that Baxter — who, ironically, suggested the Doobies recruit McDonald in the first place — “didn’t take it personally.”

There’s enough McDonald music trivia here for a special yacht edition of Jeopardy! .

Smokey robinson on sharing musicares honor with berry gordy, ‘my very best friend in the world’, doobie brothers announce new album 'liberté,' rescheduled tour dates, david crosby on channeling steely dan, turning 80, and how his new album saved him, ray charles once chewed him out..

Later in his career, McDonald and his hero were on the same bill for a benefit concert. McDonald assumed Charles knew about “the charity aspect of the event,” but apparently not. “The boss wants to talk to you,” Charles’ road manager told McDonald the day of the performance. McDonald ventured over to Charles’ trailer, finding him chilling in a bathrobe. “Man, you got to give me something,” Charles told him. McDonald had a feeling he knew what Charles meant but played dumb and asked about backstage perks. “No, man,” Charles told him, “what I’m saying is you gotta give me something! … I can’t be doing this shit for free!” As McDonald came to realize, that meant cash before Charles went onstage.

'the acolyte': this 'star wars' prequel series isn't a force to be reckoned with, bad boy for life: sean combs’ history of violence, trump allies sue to allow election officials to refuse to certify results,  he has a sense of humor about himself..

That self-effaciing side of McDonald has been evident in his acceptance of the term “yacht rock,” as he told RS in 2020. In his memoir, he writes about The 40-Year-Old Virgin , in which co-stars Paul Rudd and Steve Carell play appliance-store employees in a showroom filled with TV monitors. The manager, played by Jane Lynch, is, he writes, “a pathetically fervent Michael McDonald fan” who insists that only his music be heard in the store.
