Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

cape town game safari

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective.

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered.

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.

Top 5 Best Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

Top 5 Best Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

Heather Richardson is an award-winning travel writer, based in South Africa. She is interested in conservation stories, emerging destinations and adventure travel.

Combining a visit to Cape Town and a safari is easier than you might think, with several game reserves just a short drive from the Mother City. Many of these offer the opportunity to see the Big Five: lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards. To help you plan your trip, we’ve picked some of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town.

Although South Africa’s most famous safari area is the Kruger National Park, to get there from Cape Town requires a 2½ hour flight and sometimes a stop in Johannesburg. For those with less time, these Cape Town safari reserves are ideal.

Safaris From Cape Town

1. Aquila Private Game Reserve

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Aquila is a great choice for a Cape Town safari day trip as it’s only a couple of hours outside the city. Safaris run three times a day, allowing plenty of options for those on a brief visit. If you’re very short on time, but not on cash, opt for the fly-in helicopter safari.

Aside from the Big Five, there are 170 bird species on Aquila’s 10,000-hectare reserve and big mammals like giraffes and hippos. Aquila also have an animal rescue centre and Cape leopard research facilities on site.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 2 hours
  • Accommodation options: Aquila has a 4-star lodge and luxury cottages, both with standard, premier and family rooms.
  • Activities: game drives, horseback safaris, quad biking and helicopter fly-in safaris

2. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

One of the most luxurious places for a Cape Town safari, Inverdoorn is a 10,000-hectare reserve in the Karoo. The reserve’s Iziba Luxury Safari Lodge offers a plush spot to rest your head if a day trip from Cape Town seems too rushed.

You can see the Big Five here, as well as giraffes, hippos and cheetahs. Aside from the wildlife you will spot on a game drive, Inverdoorn is also home to a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 2½ hours
  • Accommodation options: 3-star Iziba Luxury Safari Lodge has a variety of room types from the Guest House to the Ambassador Suite.
  • Activities: game drives, cheetah encounters and walking with giraffes

Inverdoorn Game Reserve Tours

3. Garden Route Game Lodge

Garden Route Game Reserve

Another of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town, Garden Route also presents the perfect opportunity to drive this stunning coastal route from Cape Town out east.

You will likely spot four out of the Big Five on a game drive through the 3,000-hectare property (lions, rhinos, elephants and buffalo); the Cape leopard is very elusive. Other animals to see include giraffes, cheetahs and various antelopes, or rare bat-eared foxes and caracals.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 3½ hours
  • Accommodation options: The 3-star lodge has standard rooms, family or luxury suites, and chalets.
  • Activities: game drives, birding, a kids’ programme and reptile encounters

Garden Route Game Reserve Tours

4. Gondwana Game Reserve

Gondwana Game Reserve

Gondwana is a little over four hours outside Cape Town, but well worth the journey for the beautiful fynbos scenery alone, which you can learn about on a guided walk. Its flora, as well as the fauna, is what makes Gondwana one of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town.

The reserve introduced the first black rhino of recent times to the Western Cape; the rhinos were found in the region up until the late 18th century. All the Big Five are counted at Gondwana, alongside birds that are only found in South Africa – for example, the orange breasted sunbird. The 11,000-hectare reserve is home to lions, endangered Cape mountain zebras, elephants, kudu and springbok.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 4 hours
  • Accommodation options: There are four options for those staying at Gondwana, including spacious villas for families or groups, and a tented eco camp.
  • Activities: game drives, fynbos walks, picnics, hikes, mountain biking and fishing. There’s also a nearby golf course.

Gondwana Game Reserve Tours

5. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona is another of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town. More adventurous travellers can strike out on a walking safari at the Explorer Camp; alternatively, there are three lodges at which to stay. This huge reserve is 58,000 hectares. It’s possible to spot the Big Five and (if you’re lucky) other rare animals, such as aardvarks and caracals.

At Sanbona, you can also see rare white lions and riverine rabbits, the latter of which is only known to inhabit the central Karoo. And it’s not just flora and fauna: the San and Khoi-Khoi rock art found here dates back over 3,500 years.

  • Accommodation options: There are three lodges and a campsite, including the eco-friendly Dwyka Tented Lodge and the family-friendly Gondwana Lodge.
  • Activities: game drives, walking safaris, boat safaris, rock-art tours, hiking, birding and kids’ programmes

conservation

Our vision is to play a key role in global cheetah conservation to ensure the survival and sustainability of the species in the wild.

The Inverdoorn Cheetah Conservation programme is based at the Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve – two and a half hours drive from Cape Town. The project was founded in 2001 and have since become a core function within Inverdoorn’s Big 5 safari tourism operation – allowing guest interaction with the animals throughout the safari experience.

cape town game safari

Inverdoorn is an upmarket Big 5 safari reserve in the Tankwa Karoo – near Sutherland. The lodge sits on a the vast expanse of 10 000 hectare flat Karoo veld. The reserve has built a solid tourism reputation locally and internally and the original cheetah rehabilitation programme has become synonymous with its business model.

The programme was originally positioned to rehabilitate and connect with cheetahs. Since inception, the programme released seven cheetahs – two of which have been released onto the main Inverdoorn game reserve. Their independent living unfortunately made them kill considerable amounts of wildlife indiscriminately. These individuals died at Inverdoorn due to old age.

Since August 2018, The Aquila Collection has taken over the ownership of Inverdoorn Private game Reserve with very little background information on the programme, together with little facts of the success of these cheetahs. Searl Derman, owner of The Aquila Collection – immediately announced an investigation into the programme – together with NO animal interaction policy updates, effective immediately.

Appointments and treatment schedules must please be arranged during check-in at the lodge.

Gondwana Conservation Foundation

The Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF) has been established as a non-profit organization to contribute to the conservation of South Africa’s threatened and endangered species.

The four pillars of the GCF

• Endangered Wildlife The GCF’s habitat restoration and management activities, are fundamental to its conservation of key endangered species such as rhino, bontebok, Cape mountain zebra and cheetah in the Western Cape. The GCF are contributing to halting biodiversity loss, which is a key objective. • Endangered Vegetation The GCF’s work in restoring degraded habitats and implementing sustainable land management practices can contribute to the restoration of biodiversity for all ecosystems within the Cape Floristic Kingdom. The Cape Floristic Kingdom is the smallest and most critically endangered of all the floristic kingdoms and has been classified as world heritage site. • Social Impact The GCF’s focus on education and outreach, as well as its partnerships with local communities to engage and empower local communities in biodiversity conservation. The GCF’s approach to conservation recognizes the importance of ecosystem services for human well-being, and its conservation activities can contribute to enhancing these services.

• Biodiversity Restoration The GCF’s strategy can contribute to achieving the goals and objectives of addressing the underlying drivers of biodiversity loss, promoting habitat restoration and species conservation and integrating different sectors in biodiversity conservation efforts.

The 8 best safari day trips and weekends from Cape Town

Track down the elusive ‘Big Five’, and have a whale of a time doing it

Alicia Erickson

Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by curious travellers thinking of planning a trip to the Mother City, unsure of whether they’ll be able to catch a glimpse of various fantastic creatures. Happily, the answer is a big ‘Yes indeed.’ Cape Town’s charm extends far beyond the urban centre, and one of its most alluring elements – beyond the mesmerising mountain views and glimmering Atlantic Seaboard – is its proximity to nature.

South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, and while the Western Cape may be a little more under-the-radar in this arena than other regions, it still has its fair share of nature reserves. Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the ‘Big Five’ (that ’s:  lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching from the Atlantic Coast. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

Aquila Game Reserve

1.  Aquila Game Reserve

At just under a two-hour drive from the city, Aquila Game Reserve has certainly earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. The reserve helped reintroduce the Big Five to the Western Cape and is rooted in wildlife rehabilitation, land protection and community support. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad bike. If you’re lucky, you may just spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, dessert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conseration-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.

Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

3.  Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

One of the closest safari experiences to Cape Town, Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve is set against the craggy foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains. Just over an hour from the city by car, Fairy Glen transports visitors to a magical, rustic setting, with options for both day and overnight safaris. Count yourself extra lucky if you spot a leopard, but elephants, lions and other creatures roam the plains in relative abundance. Stay overnight in the self-catering accommodation to maximise your chances of spotting various fantastic beasts at sunrise and sunset.

Goudkop Bush Camp

4.  Goudkop Bush Camp

This simple and underrated wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, look for elk and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58,000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the towering green hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun, to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

Grootbos Nature Reserve

7.  Grootbos Nature Reserve

Grootbos Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

Hermanus

8.  Hermanus

Formerly a small fishing village, Hermanus has blossomed into a charming harbour town that attracts visitors from far and wide. Whale watching is what brings the crowds here, as Hermanus is graced with migrating southern right whales from June through to December. Try and spot them from the wind-swept beaches or join a boat tour and spend a day experiencing the splendour of these mighty marine mammals. Hop in your car, make that 90-minute journey from Cape Town and stay for a day or two in this whale watching paradise.

Best Cape Town Safari - lion

Cape Town Safari: The best Big 5 game reserves near the city (on a budget)

Cape Town is an amazing stand-alone travel destination. From the V & A Waterfront, Table Mountain, and penguins on Boulders Beach, to the Zeitz Mocca Museum, fabulous restaurants and dramatic beaches, the Mother City has it all...

But did you know that Cape Town even has Big 5 safari destinations where you can see Africa’s wildlife? The 3 best Big 5 safari destinations near Cape Town are Aquila, Inverdoorn, and Sanbona. These game reserves lie within a 3-hour drive of Cape Town, are malaria-free (perfect for young families), and offer a Big 5 safari experience.

Beyond Aquila, Inverdoorn, and Sanbona, there are 2 more budget-friendly Big 5 safari destinations on the Garden Route. In addition to the Garden Route parks, you can now fly directly from Cape Town International Airport to Kruger National Park in a breezy 2 and a half hours.

Let's unpack your Big 5 safari options when visiting Cape Town in South Africa.

3 Best Cape Town Safari Parks: Aquila Game Reserve, Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve, and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

These are the three top game reserves for an affordable Big 5 safari near Cape Town. All 3 offer an authentic Big 5 safari experience.

Aquila is the closest to Cape Town, the most affordable, and therefore also the most popular of the three. Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a little further away, and a little more expensive, but still a budget safari option. Last but not least, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is further from Cape Town, bigger, more exclusive, and more expensive.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Safaris

All 3 of these Big 5 safari destinations are worth considering. Malaria-free, budget-smart, and close to Cape Town, these game reserves offer a genuine Big 5 safari option that is an excellent add-on to any South African adventure.

Aquila Game Reserve, Cape Town

Aquila Safari Reviews

Aquila Private Game Reserve has a 3.5-star rating on Tripadvisor with over 350 excellent reviews and over 200 very good reviews from a total of over 950 reviews.

Even though Aquila is lauded for its excellent service and sustainability (in terms of social responsibility, wildlife conservation, and energy efficiency) some visitors rate it poorly.

Many visitors who rate Aquila poorly say the game reserve is too much like a zoo. It is important to note that this is a relatively new and small game reserve.

If you expect the quintessential rolling grasslands of Africa when you visit Aquila, you are likely to be disappointed.

The game reserve is ideal for first-time safari-goers, travellers with limited time, and budget travellers who want to see African animals in the bush, instead of in zoo cages.

To get a better sense of what Aquila is like, visit Aquila on Facebook and Aquila on Instagram .

Cape Town safari - Inverdoorn cheetahs

2. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Inverdoorn is an excellent Big 5 safari option for two reasons: the proximity of the game reserve to Cape Town and its relatively large size. The 2.5-to-3-hour drive from Cape Town makes Inverdoorn Game Reserve easily accessible for an overnight safari or weekend getaway.

Safari activities at Inverdoorn include morning and afternoon 4x4 game drives, guided bush walks with giraffes (depending on conditions), visits to the Cheetah Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre (no animal interactions allowed), and stargazing in the Klein Karoo.

For families with young children, Inverdoorn offers babysitting services and welcomes guests with kids at their 4-star lodges. Children over the age of 4 years are allowed on game drives.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve is not open to day visitors and self-drive safaris are not permitted. This limits your options somewhat but it also makes the safari experience in Inverdoorn more exclusive and crowd-free.

For this reason, Inverdoorn is not the cheapest Cape Town safari destination, but the quality of the Big 5 safari experience in Inverdoorn Game Reserve is worth the little extra spend.

The Cape Town Safari Experience

Cape Town is situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, with the Atlantic Ocean along the western shoreline and the Indian Ocean to the east. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean and the region is home to the unique fynbos biome which boasts incredible biodiversity found nowhere else in the world.

Whilst spectacular in its own right, the Cape Peninsula is very different from the typical African savannah that your average lion would generally call home. The Western Cape of South Africa is better known for its rich marine life and fynbos. This coastal region (in and around Cape Town) is a global hotspot for viewing the  Marine Big 5 animals  (whale, shark, seal, penguin, and dolphin) in the wild. The Western Cape is also home to over 500 species of birds, including 42 of South Africa's 53 endemic bird species.

Game drives on a Cape Town safari are approximately 2.5 hours long and take place twice a day in the morning and afternoon. The game drives are taken in open 4×4 safari vehicles and are accompanied by a knowledgable ranger, sharing with you a wealth of knowledge about the animals. Afternoon game drives are usually complimented with a sundowner stop in a remote location.

An Adventure Of A Lifetime
In planning our South Africa vacation last year, I went online looking for a safari adventure. There were many companies but eventually returned to Safari.Com’s website which offered many itineraries. Luckily, their agent, Dolan quickly contacted me and planned the perfect trip to Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge. I liked his quick responses to my many, many questions. Dolan handled all reservations not only the lodge but hotels, airlines and private transportation. It was an amazing vacation. Our daughter and her family decided on a vacation to South Africa so we are all headed back again this year and Safari.Com and Dolan have again done the planning even our trip insurance. I highly recommend Dolan and Safari.Com for an amazing adventure!

Newborn zebra takes first steps at malamala game reserve.

cape town game safari

A heartwarming moment was captured at MalaMala Game Reserve by game ranger Victoria Craddock, where a newborn zebra, just minutes old, took its first steps with the gentle encouragement of its mother. The baby zebra, still partially wrapped in its birth sac, struggled to stand, initially falling and wobbling on unsteady legs.

cape town game safari

In a tender display of maternal care, the mother zebra nudged her baby with her nose, providing support and encouragement. Despite multiple falls, the newborn zebra, determined to walk, gradually improved its balance by spreading its legs further apart.

cape town game safari

Walking is crucial for newborn zebras to avoid attracting predators with the scent of birth, making this a vital moment for survival. The baby zebra’s perseverance paid off as it eventually managed to stand and walk, much to the delight and pride of its mother.

cape town game safari

The scene, filled with hope and tenderness, concluded with the baby zebra joyfully leaping around, celebrating its newfound ability. The mother remained close, her presence a source of reassurance, watching over her offspring with love and pride. The baby then nuzzled into his mother’s neck, enjoying a moment of safety and relaxation after overcoming his first big challenge.

Safaris aren't the only tourist attraction in Africa. From cruises to wine tasting, here's what else you can do

A frica is blessed with some of the rarest and most beautiful animals in the world — a fact that entices tourists to book safaris year-round.

But safaris only scratch the surface of what the continent has to offer.

From wine tours to vibrant coastal cities, other experiences await those who are willing to go beyond game drives and delve deeper into the core of the continent.

Mountains, dunes and rivers

For those who love hiking, Africa is blessed with many peaks — from Morocco's Mount Toubkal to the continent's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

But there's also Mount Nyangani in Zimbabwe, which has a skywalk atop the Mutarazi Falls, the country's highest waterfall.

South Africa's Table Mountain can be climbed in a matter of hours, but adrenaline junkies may prefer to bungie jump from Johannesburg's Soweto Towers , or the Bloukrans Bridge along the country's famous "Garden Route."

Africa is ideal for travelers who crave adventure, said Zina Bencheikh, managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Intrepid Travel.

She recommends Madagascar's Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, which has two geological zones called the "Small Tsingy" and "Big Tsingy," which in the local language of Malagasy, refers to a place "where one cannot walk barefoot."

"Big Tsingy Trek is not your usual hike!" she said, describing it as a "labyrinth of limestone formations that resemble a forest made of rock."

In Namibia, travelers can climb the iconic Dune 45 to admire the sand dunes of the Sossusvlei, explore the eerie white clay pan of Deadvlei , or hike through the picturesque Sesriem Canyon.

At Victoria Falls, along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, travelers can whitewater raft, bungee jump or swim at the Devil's Pool, which is on Zambia's side of the falls. Similar adventures can be found in Jinja, Uganda, where the River Nile begins.

Hot air balloons are a popular and adventurous way to explore too, with a bird's eye view of the berber villages of Morocco to Kenya's Masai Mara.

Explore the beach

African beach towns combine beauty and culture, in places like Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique, Mauritius, Zanzibar, Ghana, Namibia and Egypt.

Mombasa, a coastal city in Kenya, is one example.

"Here, you'll experience African, Indian and Arab cultures in one place. Fort Jesus is one of Mombasa's notable sites and was built by the Portuguese in 1593. In less than 200 years, the fort changed hands nine times," said Luciemarie Swanepoel, owner of African Sky of Diamonds Tours & Safaris.

She recommends visiting Zanzibar to wander the Stone Town's labyrinthine alleys along with Kenya's Swahili Coast, the historical Gede ruins, and the UNESCO-named Mijikenda Kaya Forests .

"Madagascar … is another island gem, with beaches like Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie boasting palm-fringed coasts and vibrant coastal villages," said Swanepoel.

Durban and Cape Town are two of the best beach destinations in South Africa, she said, adding that travelers can kitesurf, snorkel, kayak or search for dugongs and whales there.

Go on a cruise

From budget-friendly houseboats to luxurious all-inclusive boutique lake cruises, Africa has a range of unique boating experiences.

Cruises along the Nile, Zambezi and Chobe rivers, as well as a cruise along Rwanda's Lake Kivu, come highly recommended, as water journeys can offer a spectacular viewing platform for wildlife.

"During a river cruise, you may spot a herd of elephants wading through shimmering water, witness great buffalo gathering along the water's edge, and even observe crocodiles stealthily slicing through pools. Hundreds of hippos also wallow in the river with just their nostrils poking out," says Kate Powell, general manager of the houseboat company Zambezi Queen Collection.

Travelers can also cruise between villages, fish, and bask in the tranquil waters.

"One can explore the Manambolo River on a pirogue, or wooden dugout canoe, under the shadow of towering rock cliffs [or] stop to explore a cave and the eerie tombs of the Vazimba, said to be the earliest inhabitants of Madagascar," said Intrepid's Bencheikh.

In addition to being a popular stop for world cruises, East and South Africa have their own ocean cruise routes which follow the coastlines and visit offshore islands. Silversea, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC have cruises departing from Africa.

The best places — and best times — to take a safari

Maritime journeys in Africa allow visitors to experience the continent's wildlife, cultures and landscapes from a unique vantage point, said Kevin Bubolz, Norwegian's vice president for Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"In Port Elizabeth, the Penguin Island Cruise excursion is a standout experience. You'll journey to the world's largest colony of African penguins in their natural habitat," he said. "If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of playful humpback and bottle-nose dolphins."

Countries like Morocco, Namibia and Ethiopia have established wine regions. But South Africa is the continent's crown jewel.

"South Africa is renowned for its world-class wine regions, with the Western Cape being the heart of the industry," said Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro, Cape Town's tourism and trade agency.

"The areas around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl comprise the famous Cape Winelands, where visitors can tour historic estates, taste award-winning wines, and learn about the winemaking process."

Not only is Stellenbosch one of the best places for wine tours, it's also a culinary hot spot, known for its innovative food scene. Elmarie Rabe, the marketing manager at Visit Stellenbosch, advises travelers to select wineries that are committed to sustainable and organic practices.

"Also consider the traveling distance between farms, as Stellenbosch stretches over 60 square kilometers," she said.

The best time to visit is during the harvest season from late January to March, when the vineyards are in full swing. But every season has its own charm, she added.

"Spring offers lush landscapes and ideal weather, while winter is perfect for enjoying bold red wines by the fireplace. Summer provides sunny days perfect for outdoor wine tasting," Rabe said.
