10 or 12 day Cocos Island diving adventure

Located in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, 300 miles southwest of Cabo Blanco, Costa Rica, lies the renowned Cocos Island Marine Park. A rugged yet incredibly verdant island, this World Heritage Site is the spectacularly beautiful crown jewel of Costa Rica's many National Parks. In 1994 after several return visits to the island, Jacque Cousteau pronounced Cocos, "The most beautiful island in the world."

Among Cocos Island's many attributes is a startling degree of biodiversity. This Island's world-renowned waters explode with life, including innumerable white tip reef sharks, schooling hammerhead sharks, dolphins, mantas and marbled rays, giant moray eels, sailfish, and of course the occasional whale shark. Other common encounters are large schools of jacks and tuna, silky sharks, silver tip sharks, marlin, Creole fish, green turtles and octopus.

Sample Itinerary:

Arrival day.

Take a shuttle to Adventure Inn and relax for one night.

  • The first day of your tour, you will be picked up at Adventure Inn and transferred by bus to Puntarenas where you will board the vessel. The drive takes about 2 1/2 hours and gives you a chance to view the lush forest and rich farmland of the region.
  • Due to occasional low tides our boats may need to depart from the pier earlier in the day. Should this occur, you will be transferred by skiff to the vessel. When all passengers have arrived on board, the vessel will take a 32-36 hour cruise out to Cocos Island.

A travel day. There will be time to arrange dive and camera gear as well as enjoy the Pacific and the sunshine. Also, the group of incredibly experienced divers provides plenty of stories to pass the time. There are videos and the experience of the Captain and crew to help you get excited for the diving...as if you need them. In addition, you may want to take this time to take one of our diving courses.

Spent diving the pinnacles around the perimeter of Cocos Island. Divers usually average three dives per day at depths of 60-100 feet (18-30 meters) or more. This, of course, is what the whole trip is about.

Make the last 3 dives before the cruise back to Costa Rica and reality!

All day to discuss the diving and to compare your adventures!

Arrival to Puntarenas. Immediately after breakfast you will be transported back to Adventure Inn. We strongly recommend booking one more night on land, before flying out, in case of any unforeseen delays.

For schedules, itineraries, policies and more information, please see underseahunter.com . For your free first and last nights at Adventure Inn, please fill out this form and include any optional extras you will be requiring in the comments section (DeepSee submarine dives, rental gear, certification courses, rebreathers, etc) and we will make all the arrangements for you.

Family on boat direction island. Things to do with family on Cocos

We had a spectacular day on the lagoon with Dan. He knows all the best spots to snorkel and see Manta rays and turtles. Dan is very knowledgeable about the atoll and was a fantastic host providing a beautiful grazing board complete with cold drinks on a deserted island! Overall an Amazing experience!

After 34 hours of crossing, we arrived to Cocos Island at 12:00 am in the morning. The crossing was little hard for the most part, but more bumpy upon the arrival to the island. This weather is normal in this season.

This first day, everybody woke up early to get the first sight of the island, breakfast was served at 06:30, after then the general dive briefing at 8:30 am. The checkout dive was done at Manuelita garden, a nice relaxing dive to get everybody in the water and ready for the week. We saw schools of fish, whitetip sharks, coupe frog fish and many eels in the coral. At 11:30 we dove Manuelita Deep, a nice dive where we saw the first Galapagos shark, five rays near each other and two frog fish.  During our 3:30 pm Manuelita Channel dive, we saw the first hammerhead sharks at the beginning of the dive and two orange frog fish in the reef the Manuelita channel.

On the second day at Cocos we dove Dirty Rock for the first dive. On this site the main attraction was the huge school of horse eyed jacks and  hammerhead shark. This made the dive for everyone, especially the photographers who made  awesome videos. After this dive we did the tour to the ranger station, then we visited the bridge and swam in the Genio river where it was incredibly  good to relax.  The second dive we dove Punta Maria, it was full of fish at the pinnacles the beautiful marble rays flying around us. For the third dive, we visited Viking Island, which is always full of schooling reef fish  and a big turtle in the bottom . A nice relaxing dive to finish the day.

The third day at the island, we completed four dives, we started at Alcyone and saw a lot of horse eyed jacks in the cleaning station and five giant eagle rays together in the rock. There was a lot of fish including cleaner butterfly fish and king angel fish, on the way back we saw dolphins at the surface and the panga driver stopped the boat and we snorkeled with them. The second dive , we intended to dive in Manuelita deep but there was a reverse current, so we decided to dive Manuelita outside, on the left side where we saw some hammerhead sharks in the corner together with Galapagos sharks.

Third dive of the day was back to Alcyone, everyone was clamoring to dive Alcyone again. We found a lot of horse eyed jacks in the cleaning station and four giant eagle rays together in the rock. It was an excellent photo opportunity for guest who like taking pictures and video. The fourth dive at Viking was a relaxing dive to finish the day with lots of whitetip sharks, reef fish and one frog fish, which were becoming more active as the night approached.

On our fourth day at the island, we first dove Big Dos Amigos. One of the highlights of this site is an arch, which guests can swim through at 80 ft/ 24 meters. At the front of the arch we saw lots of activity from the whitetips. It was full of reef fish at the arch. The second dive at Dos Amigos Small we saw again the marble rays, two black tip sharks  and also hammerhead sharks at the rock .The third dive was in the garden .We saw hammerhead sharks and three orange frog fish in the rock. We made the tour of the waterfall in Wafer Bay and all the guest loved it.

For our fifth day at the island, the first dive was  at Submerged rock, we saw some Hammerhead sharks, small school of jacks  and long nose hawk fish reef. We swam through the beautiful arch and at 65 ft/18 meter it was full of  reef fish .The second dive at Alcyone was amazing – there were many horse eyed jacks in line- the blue water, one giant eagle ray in the rock, hammerheads on  top of the divers and  when we  decided to drift we saw  hammerhead sharks in the bottom, but very deep . For the third dive we dove Manuelita garden , on this site we saw some whitetips, many schooling reef fish and a one frog fish.  It was a fantastic dive. Ending our day on an excellent note. At 4:30 pm in the afternoon, the passengers hopped into the zodiacs for a beautiful photo tour around the island, where we got to see birds, deer, waterfalls and the amazing sights that the island has to offer.

On the sixth day at the island, we dove Punta Maria first, which is always full of schooling reef fish and nice relaxing dive where we saw a majestic  Oceanic manta ray. Second dive we dove in Dirty Rock where there were a lot of Jack in front the cleaning station, we found one Galapagos shark to the right side of the main rock, then we drifted to the blue water where we found some hammerheads shark. The third dive of the day we dove Manuelita channel - the passengers liked it a lot as it a very relaxing dive that usually has a lot marine life.

On the last day at Cocos Island we try to repeat the best sites , Alcyone and Dirty Rock because they were the spots with the most activity during the week. At the first dive at Alcyone we saw four  Eagle Rays playing and one hammerhead shark at the cleaning station. To finish the dive, we decided to go to the blue where we found a nice school of Jacks and Red Mullet snappers.

On second dive we went to Dirty Rock . We started the dive with some hammerhead sharks.  We saw a lot marine life in this place and we dove towards the pinnacle site to  the main rock and we saw some hammerhead sharks and a huge school of snappers as well as some Galapagos sharks .

We also found  hammerhead sharks.  After the dive we went to Chatham Bay to visit the area and the beach ,a small tour of the island for the guests, on a perfect sunny day. For the third dive, we dove Manuelita Garden, which is full of school of reef fish- two giant moray eels  and as always,  a nice relaxing dive. With this dive we finished an excellent week of diving with a group of really nice people, which made week really enjoyable for everyone.

The crossing back to Puntarenas was as flat as it can be, sunny and beautiful. Thank you so much to our guests who came from all over the world and made this a great week.

Stay tuned for more

Thanks to all of our guest; Jessica, Taylor, Nancy, Michele, Gordon, James Douglas, Eugene, Lisa, Kevin, Cristina, Jeffrey, Karen, Jhon, Donna, Kevin, Pamela, Suzanne and Andrew for a great week of diving.

It is rare, in this day and age, to come upon a place so delightful in both looks and temperament that, on the very first sighting, one’s jaw does genuinely drop. Georgia Rickard Australian Traveller
If going with the flow is how you roll, you will love the Cocos Keeling Islands. They have a small – very small – country town vibe. Your activities revolve around the exquisite lagoon whether they be snorkelling, diving, fishing, parasailing, or just relaxing under a coconut palm reading a book while inhaling the frangipani infused air Steve Klein Curious Campers
Scuba diving at Cocos Keeling islands is nothing short of spectacular. Fabulous visibility, pristine coral reefs, abundant marine life and all the trappings of a tropical paradise without the flashy resorts. Yes, it is isolated and it takes some effort to get there, but this is more than offset by the quality of the diving, the friendly locals and the very laid back and relaxing ambience of the entire place. It is quirky, fun and a great place for a holiday. We will return and soon Phillip Tubb Melbourne
Don’t miss this place. My wife and I recently spent a fantastic week on Cocos Keeling Islands. We took the opportunity to take the twice weekly ferry service from West Island to Direction Island... we loved it so much we came back for a second time. Mike G Joondalup
Home Island is definitely quieter than West Island with religion a big part of daily life but the locals were so friendly and welcoming. It was so nice to be able to swim straight off the shore in amazing turquoise water while we cooked BBQs at sunset. Highly recommended! Pete
