Tall ship windy chicago sailing reviews.

We went on the "pirate" cruise. They told tales of actual Lake Michigan pirates and made it very entertaining for the kids and the adults. I want to go on this cruise again!

We went on the Lakeside Architecture Tour. It was a very educational and relaxing seventy-five minutes. I highly recommend the experience.

I've set sail on Tall Ship Windy 4-5 times over the past few years, and it is always a good time. You get a nice view of the city and the crew is entertaining and knowledgeable.

If you want humor, entertainment, and an inclusive experience for young and the old, don’t miss this! I appreciate everything about this adventure, and Austin you’re the best!

Had a wonderful sail on a chilly, overcast night! Crew was professional, friendly and informative. Would recommend this trip to anyone, so relaxing. Oh, used a Groupon, an extra bonus!

Best view of the city! Highly recommend the 7pm sail to watch the sunset between the buildings. Fun and knowledgeable crew made the Windy the highlight of our Chicago visit.

The most fun tour we’ve had of Chicago. The crew is fantastic and the tour guide is hilarious. His sense of humor really sets this tour apart from the rest, while still offering interesting insights on the city’s unique skyline. Loved it.

Loved our sail! I love sunsets and this in my opinion was the best way to experience the Chicago skyline. When I return I’d love to do another tour!

Honestly, a perfect experience. Exactly on-time departure and arrival. Perfect boat - size and look. The Captain and crew were friendly and knowledgable. My son raised the sail. Hard. Fun. An experience. The frozen drinks and cold beers were excellent. The views? Wow. A great soundtrack plays during the excursion at perfect volume level. A great time for all ages of Pirates. I guess I liked it :) Just do it. Thank me later.

The Tall Ship Windy is a must thing to do at Navy Pier. Very friendly and funny staff and always a good time, with beautiful views of the city of Chicago.

My husband and I just did the "Pirate and Maritime Stories" tour with Tall Ship Windy and it was fabulous. A lovely cruise around the Navy Pier, while hearing some fascinating pirate history about Chicago. We highly recommend this experience for any age!

I’m a life long Chicagoan and I brought my out of town relatives on this cruise and we all loved it! It was a gorgeous summer late afternoon and the city was just sparkling. I loved having a new view of the city. Crew excellent. My nephew helped hoist a sail. Narrator very entertaining and informative. I thought the price was great for the experience.

What a great experience! Beautiful and ever-changing views of the night skyline from the lake. When they hoisted the sails and turned off the motor, it was so peaceful. The incredible fireworks were the perfect ending to this cruise. Highly suggest!!

You can even book a VIP Centennial Wheel experience in a glass-bottomed, plush-seated gondola.

Navy Pier

Pier Park : Pier Park is the epitome of fun. It’s where you’ll find the amazing Centennial Wheel, the Pepsi Wave Swinger, a 1920s-inspired musical carousel, and other nostalgic fairground rides — all with breathtaking skyline and waterfront views.

2024 Chicago Area Summer Beach Guide to Lake Michigan’s Best Beaches

C HICAGO — One of the many advantages of living in proximity to the world's fifth-largest lake is the opportunity to enjoy the sun and sand on its shoreline.

Chicago area residents and visitors for centuries have enjoyed the region's beaches. As the metropolis expanded, so did the development along the coasts to its north and south — much of which is now restricted from public access by private property owners.

Ahead of the unofficial start of summer on Memorial Day weekend, parks and recreation officials in communities along the Lake Michigan shoreline are preparing for the 2024 summer beach season. Lifeguards and other seasonal park district employees are set to begin work at many area beaches, collecting fees and enforcing rules.

From the dunes of Northwest Indiana to the beach ridge shoreline of Illinois Beach State Park, the beaches of Chicagoland offer a range of amenities and environments, from the serene to the bustling.

For a brief rundown on what to expect along Lake Michigan this summer, Patch has compiled a 2024 beach guide to the 45 miles of shoreline in Cook County, Porter County and both Lake Counties, arranged from north to south, as well as a selection of suburban beaches on other lakes farther inland.

North Suburbs

Illinois State Beach Park, 1 Lake Front Drive, Zion Located in Zion, Illinois Beach State Park includes 6.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline stretching from Waukegan to the Wisconsin state line. It includes a north and south section, with the Zion Power Plant in the middle. There are no lifeguards on duty. Dogs are not allowed on the beach or the nature preserve, but they are allowed on a leash in the campground, picnic area and trails.

Waukegan Municipal Beach, 201 Sea Horse Drive, Waukegan The mile-long Waukegan beach is open year round from dawn to dusk and always free for pedestrians and cyclists. Vehicles without a city sticker must pay a parking fee from the Saturday prior to Memorial Day through Labor Day on weekends and holidays. Grilling, pets and glass containers are not permitted on the sandy area of the beach. Fires and loud music are also prohibited.

Independence Grove Forest Preserve, 16400 W. Buckley Road, Libertyville The Libertyville location is centered around a 129-acre lake, where wading, swimming and personal watercraft launching is prohibited. The Lake County Forest Preserve property includes a beer garden, summer concert lineup and off-leash dog area that requires a permit for entry.

Lake Zurich Paulus Park, 200 S. Rand Road, Lake Zurich Henry J. Paulus Park offers a sandy beach on Lake Zurich. The park includes playgrounds, picnic areas, and a "sprayground" for children. The beach opens May 25 and closes Sept. 2. Regular summer hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. start June 3 and run until Aug. 4. Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve, 1275 Gilgare Lane, Lake Forest

Sunrise Beach, 455 Sunrise Drive, Lake Bluff The Lake Bluff Park District's beach is expected to be fully operational for the summer season, despite ongoing construction by the North Shore Water Reclamation District. From May 25 until Labor Day, construction will pause, permitting the public full use of South Beach and the shelter. After Labor Day construction is set to resume with the goal of completing the project, adding new bathrooms and other improvements, by the end of the year. Supervised swimming is available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the beach closes nightly at 10 p.m.

Burroughs Beach, and located next to 31st Street Harbor, this popular beach is a feature within Burnham Park, the 609-acre green space between Grant and Jackson parks. The lakefront park was built from landfill using $20 million approved in a 1920 referendum.

Oakwood Beach, 4100 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago Generally less crowded than its neighbor to the north and south, Oakwood Beach first opened to the public in 2010 with various environmentally friendly features. 57th Street Beach, 5700 S. The park was originally designed in 1871, sand was added following the Columbian Exposition of 1893 and it became popular for swimming following the completion of the drainage canal in 1899.

63rd Street Beach, 6300 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago A paved beach from 1888, a 10-acre sandy beach extension was added to this Jackson Park beach by the South Park Commissioners in 1917. South Shore Drive, Chicago Part of the South Shore Cultural Center, a 65-acre site that includes a nature sanctuary and a 9-hole golf course, South Shore beach offers a peaceful atmosphere and striking views of both downtown Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Experts caution safety as beach season opens friday: half of all great lakes drownings occur in lake michigan.

“The Park District puts up lane lines that run parallel with the pavement right at Oak Street,” said Kaloustian, 65, of Arlington Heights. “Going around and just being able to see buildings as we take a breath, it’s just unbelievable. It’s breathtaking.”

Kaloustian said nothing compares to open-water swimming.

But even experienced swimmers can run into trouble with unpredictable weather conditions. According to statistics, Lake Michigan is the most dangerous of the Great Lakes for swimming.

As the city gears up to open its beaches Friday, emergency responders and the Chicago Park District caution swimmers to be vigilant.

Dave Benjamin is co-founder and executive director of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. The project tracks drowning statistics across the Great Lakes and reported that 41 of the 85 Great Lakes drownings in 2023 occurred in Lake Michigan.

“Half of all Great Lakes drownings will happen in Lake Michigan, and half of Lake Michigan drownings will happen in the south end of Lake Michigan,” Benjamin said. “Right now, we’re really at the beginning of the season for drownings.”

Benjamin said year to year, weather is the biggest predictor of drownings across the Midwest. The more sunny days, the more beachgoers, and often, the more drownings . But, there are also a number of seasonal hazards that Chicagoans should be aware of, he added.

This Memorial Day weekend, Benjamin said people should keep in mind that the water in Lake Michigan tends to be far colder than the air, especially at the start of the season. Swimmers should not expect temperatures to be similar to a pool, he said.

Chicagoans who travel to the lake this weekend may experience additional weather hazards. According to the National Weather Service, there is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. Friday and after 1 p.m. Sunday, and showers are likely Friday afternoon. Saturday will be sunny, with a high of 69 degrees.

Benjamin added swimmers this weekend should remember they have likely not swum consistently in open water since August, and their endurance and physical fitness levels are likely lower.

“The simplest thing that people could do to stay safe around the water is bring a life jacket to the beach,” Benjamin said. “Make sure it’s properly fitted. If you’re wearing a life jacket in the Great Lakes, you have a 99% survival rate based on the statistics.”

From left, siblings Israel, Selah, Zuriel, Elijah, and Amari play at the cool waters of Lake Michigan along with their mother, Leah, at 31st Street Beach on May 21, 2024. (Antonio Perez/Chicago Tribune)

Andrew Walsh, manager of beaches and pools for the Chicago Park District, said people should make sure to pay attention to the flag systems at each beach. If visitors see a yellow flag, they should determine whether to swim based on their personal comfort level, and if they see a red flag, they should stay away from the water, he said.

Walsh also encouraged swimmers not to go into the water alone.

“Sticking with friends, having a buddy system, whether it’s a group of friends or your family, know where everyone is at all times,” Walsh said. “Our lifeguards do everything they can to watch everyone, but they can’t see everyone all the time.”

Walsh added that boaters on Memorial Day weekend should make sure to stay outside the buoy line to ensure safety for swimmers. While boating isn’t in his purview, Walsh added that boaters should be sure not to drive while intoxicated.

In 2023, there were 70 reported boating accidents on Illinois waters, resulting in 12 fatalities and 37 injuries, according to statistics compiled by the Illinois Conservation Police. Of the 12 fatalities, eight who died were not wearing life jackets or vests. This was up from 52 boating accidents with six fatalities in 2022.

Conservation police also endorsed the importance of boaters wearing life jackets.

As temperatures crossed 80 degrees Tuesday morning, the water remained fairly empty as people flocked to the lakefront to sit, walk and bike by the water.

Linda Mueller, who has been a volunteer swim coach on the lake since 2017, said she was excited for the lake to finally open for swimming.

Next week, Mueller will begin running swimming drills –– an activity she loves –– once a week until the first Tuesday in August.

“I think we’re really lucky to have Lake Michigan,” said Mueller, who lives in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. “There’s nothing like when you’re lucky enough to find someone who’s willing to take you out on a boat, just to have nobody around and just to be in cold, deep water on a nice sunny day. Or even just to lay out there in the vastness on your back, on a blanket.”

Walsh encouraged swimmers who might find themselves out in deeper waters this summer not to fight a strong current. Instead, struggling swimmers should yell as loud as they can to get a lifeguard’s attention if they’re swept up, Walsh said.

“And, if you see someone struggling, do not go into the water yourself,” Walsh said. “We have life rings about every 400 yards, so you can throw that to the struggling person. And then you just want to call 911.”

Tuesday morning, the city’s public safety departments gathered for a rescue demonstration in advance of Friday’s beach openings. The offices showed how their departments collaborate to rescue a drowning person or if someone calls 911.

The Coast Guard Station Chicago said its office responds to more than 100 search-and-rescue cases per year.

While Benjamin said it’s important to be aware of these boat and helicopter rescue initiatives, he added swimmers need to remain responsible for their own safety.

If a swimmer starts to struggle, he or she can submerge in less than a minute, Benjamin said. A swimmer underwater for more than 2 minutes, he added, might not make a full recovery. That short timeframe often does not allow enough time for boats and helicopters to identify and travel to a drowning person, according to Benjamin.

“It’s great that they have these capabilities,” Benjamin said. “But it’s a false sense of security for people in the water. We need people to know that they really should be swimming near a lifeguard. They should know where the public rescue equipment is on the beach. They should know where the 911 call boxes are. That’s how you’re going to save your own life.”

While there’s plenty to do in Chicago , sometimes you need a weekend away from the hustle and bustle. Whether your idea of unwinding involves wine tasting, hopping onto a boat, wandering antique stores or strolling art galleries, there are plenty of getaways surrounding Chicago where you can do just that—and they’re all within a five-hour drive. Blessed with the Great Lakes and many smaller, inland lakes, as well as rivers, chances are you will wake up by the water.

Getting away from the city, however, doesn’t mean losing access to culture. In fact, many of these small towns near Chicago thrive on fine dining, art and natural parks that will make you want to whip out your phone to capture the striking images. Be sure to pack hiking boots, too, to explore gorgeous trails, and sandals to walk on the beach or stroll around town. That this part of the Midwest isn’t super spread out also means you don’t need to drive very far for a weekend escape, which translates to spending less time in the car and more time enjoying your vacation.

Here are five destinations to check out, ensuring you come back to the city relaxed and reinvigorated. If a road trip is calling and you’re not sure where to go, this cheat sheet will help.

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

1.5-Hour Drive

Architecture geeks and The Gilded Age fans will love the grand, historic estates dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s that surround Geneva Lake, accessible via a stroll around a section of the 26-mile Lake Shore Path or aboard a narrated Geneva Cruise Line boat tour . Dine with a lake view on the patio at Barrique Bistro & Wine Bar or linger over Italian-American food like wild-boar Bolognese pasta at Sopra Bistro on Main Street. Shop downtown for cheese curds and cheddars flavored with whiskey, dill and more at Hill Valley Dairy’s storefront , and poke into the Lake Geneva Public Library , designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé James Dresser and featuring stained-glass windows from Wright’s now-demolished Lake Geneva Hotel. For whimsical décor finds and entertaining frills, head to the other side of the lake to Fontana Home . The best design-oriented spot for a beer is at Topsy Turvy Brewery , within a 1910 former church.

Where to Stay

Featuring an outdoor pool with striped umbrellas and a speakeasy-style bar, Maxwell Mansion ’s 28 rooms are divided between the main house and former horse stables. For a full-service experience that includes a spa, steakhouse, Italian restaurant and outdoor pool, try the  Grand Geneva Resort & Spa , whose interconnected buildings were once home to the Playboy Club. Today, you can sip cocktails in the lobby’s sunken lounge.

Saugatuck, Michigan

2.5-Hour Drive

Hugging Lake Michigan’s western shoreline, Saugatuck, fittingly known as “The Art Coast,” is home to dozens of galleries. Most are sprinkled downtown near shops and restaurants, although the two-story, 12,000-square-foot J. Petter Galleries just outside of town is worth a trip, and hosts a wine bar within. In nearby Douglas, one of the nation’s oldest artist residencies— Ox-Bow , affiliated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, also a destination for art and writing classes—hosts an art gallery and boutique (Ox-Bow House) in an adorable white church dating back 152 years. Modales Wines in Fennville pours wines crafted by its Napa Valley-born winemaker, formerly of Duckhorn. Rosso also owned a gourmet-foods shop of the same name in New York City. Antiques and artwork tie into a clear coastal vibe that includes outdoor s’mores and French bistro chairs on the patio.

Kohler, Wisconsin

This company village town—nearly everyone works for the luxury plumbing manufacturer—also excels at hospitality. The Immigrant Restaurant has long been considered one of Wisconsin’s best fine-dining restaurants; it embraces early-American art and décor while serving a five-course tasting menu, plus delicacies like caviar and 16 artisan Wisconsin cheeses. At the three-level, 36,000-square-foot Kohler Design Center , rooms by celebrity designers can be toured and the design staff is available to chat. Then, at Kohler Waters Spa, hydrotherapy treatments incorporate Kohler’s Vichy shower. On your way into town, swing by Art Preserve , a museum dedicated to artist-built environments by folk artists. Tours of the Kohler factory across the street from the hotel are led by retired employees.

The American Club is the most luxurious of the three Kohler properties, with 241 rooms. Built in 1918 for single male immigrant employees, it’s now one of Wisconsin’s most coveted properties, with a spa, yoga studio, multiple restaurants, golf courses and shops all within a short walk and managed by the resort.

Galena, Illinois

3-Hour Drive

Situated along the Mississippi River, Galena boasts an adorable downtown dotted with antiques stores (like the 200-some vendors at Elizabeth’s Grand Antique Co. in a former school) and unique boutiques along Main Street. That includes Galena Apothecary (formerly of Chicago, the owner opened the shop in her favorite weekend-getaway town), Galena Book & Paper (books and stationery) and Galena River Goods (candles, skincare products, barware and clothing). Sip bubbles in Champagne on Main ’s outdoor courtyard and choose your dinner spot after a walking tour with Galena Foodie Adventures , visiting five different eateries.

chicago cruises on lake michigan

Tuck in at night at Goldmoor Inn , a castle-like structure just outside of town with 13 suites and breakfast included. Massages are also available on-site, in the inn’s dedicated spa room, including a hot-stone massage to work out the kinks.

chicago cruises on lake michigan

Traverse City, Michigan

5-Hour Drive

This emerging wine region is also a great spot to hike; make sure to take in the soaring bluffs at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and to sail. The Wind Dancer , offers sunset sails nearly daily as well as Champagne Sails on Sunday afternoons. Short on time but still want to experience a local winery? Head to the 155-acre Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery , where the vineyard views from an elevated deck are nothing short of picturesque, with vistas of a lavender field and gardens blooming with flowers and herbs. The winery also serves frosé, plus cheese and charcuterie boards. Perusing downtown Traverse City’s shops, including two bookstores, can easily fill an afternoon. History buffs will love Trattoria Stella ’s cave-like environment, located at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons , a former state-run mental hospital with a philosophy that a beautiful environment is healing.

chicago cruises on lake michigan

Delamar Traverse City ’s perch above the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay means water views for days and the on-site yoga studio puts wellness within easy reach, plus a restaurant wildly popular with locals. Or, wake up next to the grapes at the 10-room Inn at Black Star Farms , which also hosts private yoga classes in its vineyard.

Milwaukee's river cruises are a staple of summer

chicago cruises on lake michigan

The name Milwaukee is derived from the Algonquian word Millioke, meaning the “good land,” and from a Potawatomi word, Minwaking, meaning “gathering place by the waters.”

But at times over the years the city has turned its back on the Milwaukee River, which runs through downtown before it meets the Menomonee River and flows into Lake Michigan.

Now, on most summer days people can explore the city from the rivers. Boat tour companies like Edelweiss Cruises, Milwaukee Boat Line, Riverwalk Boat Tours & Rentals, and Boat MKE – as well as several kayaking companies – offer a wide range of opportunities to get out on the water and cruise the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers, not to mention Lake Michigan. Themes include sunset cruises, historic narrated boat tours, architecture tours, happy hours, and yes, even a Wisconsin Brat Cruise. Charters and rentals are also available, because one of the few things better than being on a boat is being on a boat with a bunch of friends.

Milwaukee may be known as a “great place on a Great Lake,” but don’t forget its rivers. They’re pretty incredible, too.
