Westpalmbeach.com official guide to west palm beach, florida, lion country safari.

Lion Country Safari

Lion Country Safari opened in 1967, in rural Palm Beach County just west of West Palm Beach. At the time it was the first drive through safari park in the United States and introduced a new concept to animal lovers, The Cageless Zoo .  Lion Country Safari was originally developed by a group of South African and British entrepreneurs who wanted to bring the experience of an African game park, then and now an expensive and time-consuming trip, to South Florida families who would otherwise not be able to experience an African safari.

We planned to just venture through the park on our own but decided to book a tour instead. So happy we did. Pete, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge and so passionate about this unique habitat. It was also very convenient and professional. Rather than just "look" at the Everglades, I felt like we got to "experience " the Everglades. Book with confidence.

Outstanding day with Ben! He was loaded with knowledge for the entire day. Alligators, birds, Ecosystems, Ben even had a bird checklist of 70 different varieties, We found 28 of those on the list.

We took this tour on our honeymoon, and it was one of our more memorable experiences! The tour guide was absolutely the best there is. We visited so many wonderful locations you would never know were there unless you lived here. My wife and I learned a lot. We're really glad we took this trip, and highly recommend it for anyone else who enjoys nature.

This Florida Drive-Through Safari Park Is the Perfect Day Trip Adventure For Families

David Reeve

Florida’s very own Lion Country Safari beckons with the kind of adventure that doesn’t require you to hop on a plane or trek through the dense jungle.

Set in the Sunshine State’s lush backdrop, this drive-through safari park offers an exhilarating day trip for families craving a taste of the wild side, just a stone’s throw from home.

So, buckle up and prepare for an escapade that’s as close to a real African safari as you can get without needing your passport!

lion country safari 1

Through the winding paths of Lion Country Safari, nestled in Loxahatchee near West Palm Beach , you’ll find a world of wildlife that turns an ordinary weekend into an extraordinary exploration.

Every turn of the wheel brings you face to face with creatures most only see in storybooks or on screen.

Majestic lions laze under the Florida sun, embodying the spirit of the savannah.

Meanwhile, curious giraffes might just saunter up to your vehicle, offering a close-up look at their long lashes and even longer necks.

Traveling through this park is like leafing through an atlas, each habitat a stamp on your passport.

lion country safari 2

Now, you might be thinking that zoos are all about the animals, and you wouldn’t be wrong, but here, it’s also about the vibe.

The place is crafted so meticulously that you half expect your GPS to welcome you to a new country with every twist and turn of the path.

Look at the rhinos over there, chomping on grass like they’re at an all-you-can-eat buffet, completely unfazed by the human paparazzi.

It’s the animal kingdom’s version of celebrities going about their day—total nonchalance.

lion country safari 3

And the ostriches, they’re the divas of the bird world, aren’t they?

Strutting their stuff as if the park is their personal runway, feathers and all.

The bird melodies are like nature’s Spotify, each tweet and chirp a new track on the ‘Jungle Beats’ playlist.

It’s easy to get swept up in the rhythm of this wild, wonderful world.

It’s a place where you’re not just observing but a part of the scene, an extra in the most epic nature documentary never filmed.

And the best part?

No commercials.

lion country safari 4

Families often find that the safari ignites a sense of wonder in both young and old.

Children press their noses to car windows, eyes wide with amazement, as elephants use their trunks like nature’s own multi-tool.

Parents share in the delight, capturing memories with their cameras, the kind of shared experience that becomes family folklore.

When you’ve had your fill of the car-side critter cruising, it’s time to stretch those legs and dive deeper into the wild wonders on foot.

At Safari World amusement park, the animal antics are just getting started, and trust me, your snack bag isn’t the only thing that’s going to get lighter here.

Who wouldn’t want to have a giraffe as a new dining buddy?

These long-necked lovelies are the ultimate over-the-fence gossips, always eager for a snack and maybe a little chat.

And don’t worry, they’ll eat right out of your hand, literally.

Just don’t ask them about their height.

It’s a touchy subject.

lion country safari 5

But wait, the adventure’s not over yet!

Have you ever seen a macaw in flight?

It’s like a living rainbow that squawks, and these feathered show-offs love to strut their stuff.

They’re the daredevils of the bird world, and their aerial acrobatics will have you oohing, aahing, and maybe ducking—because, let’s face it, they don’t always stick the landing.

lion country safari 6

And let’s not forget the mischievous squad of squirrel monkeys.

These little rascals are the pranksters of the park, always up for a game of ‘steal the tourist’s sunglasses.’

But who can stay mad at those cute, fuzzy faces?

Just make sure to zip up your pockets, or you’ll leave with lighter luggage, and I don’t mean by giving it away willingly!

lion country safari 7

For those with a competitive streak, mini-golf and a maze offer a change of pace.

The splash park invites the little ones to cool off, a welcome reprieve from Florida’s balmy climes.

Indeed, Lion Country Safari serves up a smorgasbord of activities to complement the wildlife experience.

Dining options within the park ensure that your adventure doesn’t have to pause for hunger pangs.

Whether you opt for a quick snack to refuel or a leisurely meal to savor the flavors, there’s something to satisfy every appetite.

And let’s not forget the gift shop, where souvenirs capture the spirit of the day.

lion country safari 8

Safety is paramount, and the park’s guidelines ensure that the animals and guests are cared for.

Respect for the roaming wildlife is a given, and the privilege of being among them is a reminder of our place in the larger tapestry of life.

When the day wanes and the sun begins its descent, families depart with a trove of memories.

The laughter and stories from the day’s escapades fill the car on the journey home, the safari’s magic lingering long after the gates have closed behind them.

As the sun sets on your Lion Country Safari experience, your heart swells with the joy of discovery and the thrill of adventure.

To think, all this awaits right here in Florida, where the wild things roam and families forge bonds through shared discovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Chevron down What kind of animals do you have?

Safari Wilderness has over 450 animals representing over 50 different species. A lot of the animals you find here are ones that zoos are unable to house because they live in such large groups and require lots and lots of space. Because our property consists of 260 acres of pristine wilderness, we’re able to house a variety of exotic hoof stock species such as Scimitar-horned oryx (a species that is extinct in the wild), common and Defassa waterbuck, zebra, camels, ring-tailed and red-ruffed lemurs, red lechwe, nilgai, Kudu, watusi cattle, and more! You’ll also have a chance to see a variety of native wildlife.

  • Chevron down Ratings and Reviews?

Rated by Fodor’s International Travel Guide as one of the  “Top 10 Safaris in the USA!” Check out our  TripAdvisor Page  to what our visitors have said about us!

Safari Wilderness Ranch is a Florida agritourism project and is accredited by the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and licensed by the USDA.

  • Chevron down Where do your animals come from?

Because we have so much space for our animals, babies are a very common thing! Many of our animals are born onsite. We’re accredited by the ZAA (Zoological Association of America), so we often buy, sell, and trade with other accredited facilities.

  • Chevron down What should I wear?

Although not required, we recommend close-toed shoes. We go rain or shine, so dress appropriately for the weather.

  • Chevron down Can I bring my pet?

We do not allow any unauthorized animals on the premises, which includes our driveway and parking lot. Please leave all dogs, cats, and other furry critters at home.

  • Chevron down Will I see every animal during the tour?

Although guides make every effort to encourage our residents to greet our tour groups, you may not see every animal during your time here. Because our property is so large, and most of the animals live in huge pastures as opposed to enclosures, there is no guarantee that you will see every species on the property.

  • Chevron down Other things to know

We do not do special pricing for children, infants, seniors, etc.

Swamp Buggy Eco Tour

Billie Swamp Safari's Award-Winning Swamp Buggy Eco-Tour

Experience our award-winning 55-minute Swamp Buggy Eco-Tour as you immerse yourself into Florida’s best natural attraction. Furthermore, visitors can learn about the fragile ecosystem of the Florida Everglades and the flora and fauna that surrounds you. Our guides will take you on a journey through time while you explore the lush wilderness of Seminole Country. Moreover, bounce and splash through the swamp as you view native and exotic wildlife up-close and in a free-roaming environment. For example, Swamp buggy riders will see an array of native and exotic animals. These include; deer, antelope and bison, many species of birds, rookeries, alligators and hogs. In fact, some lucky guests may get a glimpse of a Florida Panther or Black Bear.

Along the swamp buggy trail, guests can visit a  Florida Seminole Indian Camp. Here, you can learn about Seminole culture and history. In fact, you can even learn about a few plant uses that were vital to Seminole  survival hundreds of years ago. Many are still used today as holistic remedies.

What is a Swamp Buggy?

Swamp Buggies are open, custom motorized vehicles with a canopy top. They also have powerful tractor tires to move effortlessly through the swamp, while acting as shock-absorption to riders. Thus, the expression “bounce” around on a swamp buggy. More specifically, swamp buggies are designed to provide visitors with an elevated view of the Florida Everglades. In this environment, swamp buggy vehicles stomp through the wetlands, cypress heads and hardwood hammocks. A swamp buggy travels over dry land and muddy marshes, giving you a great view to see plants and animals that an airboat can’t reach. In contrast, on this open ride, you are the one in a “cage,” not the animals.

The Everglades Swamp Buggy is an Off-Road Adventure

Our Florida Everglades swamp buggies can cross virtually any type of terrain. As such, they give new meaning to the phrase “off-road”. Whether it’s thick marsh, uneven ground, thatch brush or low water passages, you’ll see and experience it all. At the same time, our swamp buggies are built for your comfort and safety. Moreover, our nature tour will provide an intimate look at Everglades plant and wildlife. Most importantly, it will be the best Florida Everglades vacation you can cherish for a lifetime.

We took the sunset dolphin and snorkel cruise with Tim and it was absolutely unbelievable! He was a great captain and took us to so many great spots. We saw atleast 30 dolphins, snorkeled and saw rays, and a gorgeous sunset. Will be doing this again when we come back!

safari southern florida

Did the three hour dolphin and snorkel ride for $99/person. Originally was supposed to go earlier but they called me the day before and said the weather would be bad and asked if we could postpone it and I am glad we did because the weather was much sunnier and less windy the next day. James did a great job as our captain. It's nice you can bring your own beverages and they have some snacks on board. We drove around key west stopping at a few points, then rode out to an area to snorkel for a bit where we saw tons of sponges and some little fish, and then head back toward Key West, into the marina, and then back to where we started. Honestly, we didn't see any dolphin until we were on our way back in from snorkeling, and it honestly felt like it was just pure luck that we saw one but thank goodness we did since it was the highlight of the safari. The boat was pretty nice and comfortable. There were 6 total people including Captain James. The front is definitely the best place to see things from, so try to get a seat there if you can, even though it's not under the shaded cover part. It's like $112.36 per person after tax/fees plus there's a big sign on the boat guilt tripping you into tipping at least 20%. It's fine because James did a great job and deserved the 20% tip (although if we didn't bump into that dolphin on the way in, I would've felt a bit ripped off for the price), but basically expect to be out over $130 per person for a three hour boat ride. This can get pretty expensive, especially if you have a family, and I would've felt ripped off if we didn't see a dolphin but luckily we did so it was a cool experience that I definitely recommend when the weather is nice, winds are calm. Their website had higher prices in the description than the $99 that was actually charged so I hope they don't raise their prices because that would get kind of expensive. Especially when I was just in Miami and could rent a 13 person yacht for four hours $1300 so $100/person plus tax and tip is about the most I would be willing to pay for this experience, especially since seeing dolphins isn't guaranteed so you are basically just paying for a 3 hour boat ride.

Snorkel area. Water was about 4 feet deep. Beautiful day. Lots of sponges.

We didn't do the actual dolphin safari, but instead used their charters for the Sandbar excursion. Honestly should have still been the dolphin tour for how many dolphins we did see! Absolutely a fantastic excursion with a wonderful captain. Loved being able to go out to the sandbar with the swing and relax in the water. They even gave out some snacks. Coolers are on board for any BYOB. A few slightly shaded seats on board. Can't really ask for more!

We took the 3 hour snorkel and dolphin cruise. The boat was a beautiful, spotless bow rider. The weather was amazing and the ride was gorgeous. But the absolute BEST part of this trip was the captain Jeff! I have to say, he had to be one of the kindest people I have ever meet. Book your trip and tell them you want Jeff's boat!! Thanks Jeff! -Marion and Karen

Best experience ever!! Our family had so much fun! Clean boat. Knowledgeable captain. Highly recommend!

Outstanding trip with the Dolphin Safari crew. We started at the beautiful Perry Hotel in Stock Island. Prior to departure we awaited the boat to arrive while having a lovely adult beverage at The Salty Oyster bar. Once we boarded the boat it was a smooth day to venture through key west. After viewing about 6-8 Dolphins we drove to a wonderful snorkel area to see the shipwreck below with tons of coral and fish. Our next stop was the Sandbar where we sat around and mingled with our family from Brazil to complete the day. Since we are locals and our day off, we really enjoyed the ease of this trip and couldn't of asked for anything more. Great trip and we thank the crew for a lovely experience. Must attend while in Key West !!! Book through or call the key west visitor center www.keywest123.com or text 305-296-8881.

We had an Awesome trip. James was our Captain and did a great job providing us with a fantastic trip. We did exactly what we wanted to do and enjoyed a beautiful sunset with Champagne. I would highly recommend this company and hire James as your Captain. James is very knowledgeable of the area and provided us with great views and knowledge of the surrounding area. I would add this trip to your list of activities to do when in Key West.

I do not recommend this company. It was just a long boat ride. Not much to learn. Look for another company for sure.

Highlight of our trip to Florida! We (female 49 with 3 boys (2x15 and 11) travelled from Vancouver, BC to Florida for a trip to Disney and a short 2 day trip to the keys. Wanting to cram in as much as we could in a brief trip we booked a 3 hour boat trip with dolphin tours. Ed and Melanie were immediately warm and friendly upon arrival which made us feel so at ease and welcome. With Melanie as our captain, the chill and friendly vibe continued throughout our beautiful and relaxing boat trip. Melanie found us dolphins, a lovely snorkelling spot and a once in a lifetime sunset all while making sure the teens were comfortable (pee breaks, blankets, sofas, snacks and music). Was an absolutely fantastic and unforgettable afternoon!

Photo of Melle B.

Had a really good experience. We went for the $99/head dolphin/snorkel/sandbar experience and it was worth it! Total or 6 people in the boat, 3 hrs tour and really had a great time! They provide water, soda and snacks.

Thank you Melle for taking time to review your experience with us! We are really happy that you enjoyed it! Looking forward to see you again! From Dolphin Safari with love!

Things to do | summer savings: don’t ‘pass’ up discounted admission at south florida attractions.

If not, they could be!

Some of South Florida’s most popular attractions are offering families a way to save all season long with two deals that are good for a host of fun activities: the South Florida Adventure Pass and the Summer Savings Pass .

Each pass gives purchasers access to four places where they can get up close with animals, take an Everglades airboat ride or try their hand at science, among other interesting things to do, for one discounted price. In total, the eight participants span Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, offering indoor and outdoor experiences.

“Our guests tell us they’ve been counting down the days till they can get their South Florida Adventure Pass,” said Mary Jane Vanden Berge, executive director of Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, which will be participating again this year. “With prices for everything what they are right now, this is the kind of offer families need, where one affordable fee locks in summer fun at four attractions.”

Meanwhile, the Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach is part of the Summer Savings Pass promotion.

“There’s nothing like summer in South Florida and seeing kids explore outside the classroom,” Cox Science Center president and CEO Kate Arrizza said. “It is a joy having our center participate in the Summer Savings Pass to ensure families get to experience the best nearby attractions.”

Extra savings: Catch the final week of Miami Attraction & Museum Months through Friday, May 31. Take advantage of various discounts from more than 50 participants on museum admissions, bike tours, botanical gardens, airboat rides, mini golf, and film festival and theater tickets. Southern Florida

March is an ideal time to visit Southern Florida, when the weather is perfect, the ocean is sparkling, and colorful birds are everywhere. At Camping.com, weíve outlined a trek that will take you from the city lights of Miami to the beauty of Key Largo, the lush swamps of the Everglades, and the golfing and shopping highlights of Naples. Whether youíre looking for scuba diving adventures, deep sea fishing voyages, kayaking trips, or just a little relaxation on a sandy beach, youíll find a fabulous get-away in South Florida. The route outlined below can be done in a long weekend or spread out over several weeks, so set your own pace and enjoy the trip!

Begin your adventure in Miami , that vibrant city on Biscayne Bay, located on the eastern side of Floridaís southern tip. Known as the ìmagic city,î Miami is home to outstanding museums, family attractions like the Parrot Jungle and Miami Seaquarium, and sporting events with Dolphins football, Marlins baseball, and Miami Heat basketball. As home to the University of Miami’s Hurricanes, this is a great place to enjoy a collegiate sporting event, a picnic in Bayfront Park, a play at the Coconut Grove Playhouse, or boating from one of the city marinas. You’ll find incredible shopping in the city’s downtown, amazing restaurants with Cuban flare, and unforgettable swimming and snorkeling at nearby Biscayne National Park .

From Miami, head south on Highway 1 through Homestead to Key Largo , the northernmost of the Florida Keys. Since this watery wonderland is near North Americaís only living coral barrier reef, it’s natural that scuba diving, kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming are all popular activities here. You can plan a diving tour of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary , exploring the Spiegel Grove, a 510-foot sunken Navy ship that provides habitat for coral and schools of fish. You can spend a day sport fishing for sailfish, redfish, and tarpon in Florida Bay and further offshore or go bird watching, kayaking, or wildlife viewing. Don’t forget to watch for the elusive and gentle manatees while youíre here! If you have a little extra time, a visit to Key West makes an excellent side trip.

Heading back to the north, Highway 41 will take you through Everglades National Park , the largest subtropical wilderness in the country. Home to animals like crocodiles, panthers, and West Indian manatees, this is a must-see destination for wildlife lovers. Take a ranger-led tour to watch for alligators, view flamingos, or enjoy hiking through this 1.5-million acre wilderness. Since a third of the park is covered in water, this is a fantastic place to fish for snapper, sea trout, redfish, bass, and bluegill. You can take a side-trip to explore the Ten Thousand Islands, take photographs of wild orchids, or explore the world of the mangroves. Birders will love the colorful spoonbills, ibises, herons, pelicans, and other amazing water birds.

After your visit to the Everglades, follow Highway 41 north to Naples on Florida’s Gulf Coast. With its calm seas and white sandy beaches, Naples is a paradise for water-sports enthusiasts. The area is also a haven for golfers, with more than seventy challenging courses that are open year-round. Nature lovers will enjoy a canoe trip through the Ten Thousand Islands, a visit to the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, and the Babcock Wilderness Adventures where you can see panthers, bison, ospreys, and wild alligators. Whether you stroll along the beaches looking for seashells or take a sailing trip through the turquoise waters, you’ll have a thrilling time in Naples.

The 15 U.S. cities where rent has gone down the most—2 are in California and 1 is in Florida

By mike winters,cnbc • published may 29, 2024 • updated on may 29, 2024 at 2:53 pm.

Rent prices have been a lone bright spot amid high inflation , as one-bedroom homes in many cities are cheaper than they were a year ago.

All of the 15 U.S. cities with the biggest year-over-year drops in price are in the Sun Belt, which stretches across southern and southwestern states, according to a rent report from online realtor Zumper published Tuesday .

📺 24/7 South Florida news stream: Watch NBC6 free wherever you are

The drop in rental costs are part of a broader cooling trend, as roughly half of the 100 largest cities have posted declines since last year. The national median price for a one-bedroom unit is $1,504, as of May — exactly the same as a year ago.

While one-bedroom rental prices ticked up 1.2% on a monthly basis in May, they've been mostly flat in 2024. Stalling prices have provided much needed breathing room for Americans feeling squeezed by high inflation , especially for housing, which is typically the largest expense in a monthly budget .

The decline in rental prices in southern cities is largely due to increased construction of rental units, but also population loss in some cities, especially in California, Zumper's study says.

One-bedroom prices in Greensboro, North Carolina, are down 11.9% in the last year — the highest of all major cities. The city has encouraged new construction through property annexation and zoning reform , adding thousands of rental units in 2023.

Here's a look at the 15 U.S. cities with the largest drops in one-bedroom rental prices for the year ending May 24, according to Zumper's data.

South Florida seeing rise in cases of dengue as officials keep close eye

Christina Vazquez , Reporter

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Climate change hasn’t just made Florida a breeding ground for more mosquitos, but ones with a more potent viral bite.

This comes as Miami becomes ground zero in the U.S. fight against dengue due to an explosion of cases in Latin America and the Caribbean making its way to South Florida.

“Now anyone who is traveling to Latin America should be particularly alarmed because cases of dengue are higher than ever,” said Dr. Aileen Marty, an infectious disease expert at Florida International University.

There have been 67 cases of dengue in Miami-Dade County and 24 in Broward County, according to the CDC .

“If we see it in Latin America, definitely we expect it here,” said Dr. Cheryl Holder, Founding Co-Chair and Executive Director of Florida Clinicians for Climate Action.

Most of the cases in South Florida are travel-related as global health leaders track an explosion of cases across Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Brazil is having a rapid increased in dengue,” said Holder.

Mosquitos spread the viral infection to people and rising global temperatures are raising the stakes, giving the tropical biting insect more territory to thrive in.

That’s a contributing factor to the escalating prevalence of dengue.

“Happier, biting more, feeding more, and replicating more, prime conditions that the planet warming has made,” she said.

“As the temperature rises, the amount of virus reproduction increased therefore each bite has more dengue particles than before,” added Marty.

Common symptoms of dengue include fever, aches and pains, and nausea or vomiting, and, in more severe cases, edema.

“One of the big complications with severe dengue is fluid leaks out of your blood vessels, you basically drown in your lungs from your own fluids,” said Marty. “That is what makes this such a dangerous, dangerous virus, and why it can kill.”

“Now what has improved in our condition is our surveillance methods are better,” added Holder. “We have a better mosquito control system and better overall sanitation than a lot of poorer countries.”

Marty said it could take between three days and two weeks to see the symptoms, but with four varieties of dengue, there is no anti-viral available, there is a vaccine.

“There is a vaccine, more than one that has been developed. However, we do not give that vaccine to anyone who has not had dengue because part of the complication with dengue is that there are four different kinds, and the risk of severe disease goes up if you have had one type and then see another type,” she said. “So we give the vaccine to people who are traveling to a dengue area who have already had dengue. Now, unfortunately, Miami-Dade is a dengue area right now, our case numbers are low, but we have mosquitos that are infected.”

MORE INFORMATION FROM THE CDC

Globally, there are about 40,000 dengue associated deaths annually.

Early recognition of dengue and prompt intravenous fluid management , when indicated, reduces mortality to <1%, whereas untreated dengue can have a case-fatality ratio as high as 13%.

Which vulnerable populations are most at risk for serious illness/death?

Almost half of the world’s population, about 4 billion people, live in areas with a risk of dengue.

Anyone who lives in or travels to an area with risk of dengue is at risk for infection.

Infants, elderly people, people with a second dengue infection or people with comorbidities (like diabetes, hypertension) are at higher risk for severe dengue.

What should someone do if they get it?

There is no specific medicine to treat dengue. See  a healthcare provide r if fever or symptoms of dengue develop. Tell your doctor if you have traveled.

  • Rest  as much as possible.
  • Take acetaminophen  to control fever and relieve pain.
  • Drink plenty of fluids  to stay hydrated.

I went on a 2-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for just $50 a day

I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.

I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.

Driving our own car, camping, and preparing our own food saved us money.

The idea of a South African safari often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.

According to a data analysis from Go2Africa , the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.

But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.

Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.

I saved by buying an annual pass

The biggest savings at Kruger National Park can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.

The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.

Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.

Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.

We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps

One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.

We live in South Africa , so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.

Kruger National Park has a range of rest camps for different budgets and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.

Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.

My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.

Cooking our own food saved us money …

We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.

Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.

The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.

But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.

… and so did doing a self-driving safari

If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.

We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.

Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.

On our last self-drive safari in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).

Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy

We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.

This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.
