10 Days Self-drive | In-Depth Iceland Ring Road Tour

We had a well planned self drive around Iceland. Every question I had beforehand and during the trip was quickly responded to. Highlights were zodiac tour of lagoon, glacier hike and puffins. If I were to do again I would add the westman islands to the tour to see puffins and other birds.

Europe road trip reviews.

The communication/paperwork could use a little fine tuning, but overall the value was definitely there. This tour brings you through absolutely spectacular areas of Ireland, with enough downtime to not feel too rushed. The hotels/food was nicer than we expected for the price.
The locations and hotels selected were excellent. At the last minute my husband ended up in a wheelchair for most of the trip. Once I mentioned it to the check-in staff they went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. Changing rooms so that he had a walk in shower, a room close to the elevator and assistance with luggage or whatever we needed. Thank you.
Excellent itinerary, great hotels, easy to read maps with lots of good information. Iceland is unique and beautiful, full of contrasts, wildlife and natural beauty.

"Rianna was our trip manager for our tour of Europe last Summer - I couldn't have asked for a better tour guide for my first solo trip overseas. Rianna went above & beyond to ensure we all got the most out of every experience, and her organisation was integral to the trip running smoothly. I would absolutely book another trip with her in the future.

  • Your tour covers the National Mall in an all-electric vehicle. We're committed to reducing the environmental impact of vehicle-based tourism in Washington DC, which makes up the vast majority of tours given in this city. Make a "green" difference by seeing the Mall via electric transportation!

Ready to take on the busiest area in DC? Skip the crowded sidewalks and slide into our all-electric Red Roadsters to be guided around our nation’s capital by a local. Our National Mall tour starts at National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, where our guides take you back to the city’s origins and give you some tips for exploring the city on your own. You work your way through the Smithsonian area, discussing the best exhibits in each. Make sure you bring a notebook because you’ll want to take notes for later! Next, breeze past the Washington Monument, Holocaust Museum, and Bureau of Engraving and Printing on your way to our beautiful Tidal Basin, where you’re entertained with the stories behind the watery oasis and the Jefferson Memorial. You also have the opportunity to hop out and explore on your own! We do that at two stops: the FDR and MLK memorials, as well as at the Lincoln Memorial. At both locations, head out on foot with tips and insider information from our guide, and spend some time inside these amazing memorials. Afterward, cruise along the scenic Potomac River with views of Arlington Cemetery before seeing the World War I and World War II memorials. Continue your journey through American history with a drive past the White House. Finally, feast your eyes on the buildings of Capitol Hill and learn the history behind them. End your tour on a high note by asking your guide for an amazing spot for lunch before exploring the rest of DC on your own. Our Red Roadsters are the personal and comfortable way to tour the National Mall.

Charging Forward: Electric Cars and the Eco-Friendly Tourism Movement

Eco-conscious exploration: electric vehicles in sustainable tourism, zero-emission mobility: paving the way for greener travel, tourist-friendly charging infrastructure: an essential component, enhancing the visitor experience: eco-friendly adventures, collaborative sustainability: stakeholders shaping the future, a pathway to sustainable adventures: strategies for success, a greener road ahead: electric cars transforming travel, conclusion: electric cars driving towards a greener horizon.

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, the travel industry is undergoing a transformation towards more eco-friendly practices. Electric vehicles (EVs) are emerging as a driving force in this shift, with their potential to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the travel experience. This article explores the integration of electric cars into sustainable tourism initiatives, highlighting how these vehicles are reshaping the way we explore the world while promoting greener travel experiences.

Sustainable tourism emphasizes minimizing negative environmental and social impacts, making electric vehicles a natural fit for eco-conscious travel. Electric cars produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing the carbon footprint of travelers and contributing to cleaner air in popular tourist destinations.

The adoption of electric vehicles in tourism:

  • Reduces Air Pollution: Electric cars mitigate air pollution in sensitive natural areas, ensuring pristine landscapes for future generations to enjoy.
  • Quieter Journeys: The quiet operation of electric vehicles enhances the tranquility of scenic routes, offering tourists a more immersive and peaceful travel experience.
  • Low Environmental Impact: EVs significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, supporting efforts to preserve fragile ecosystems and maintain biodiversity.

Developing a robust charging infrastructure is crucial for the successful integration of electric vehicles into sustainable tourism:

  • Destination Charging Stations: Charging stations located near popular tourist sites, hotels, and attractions make it convenient for travelers to charge their electric cars.
  • Scenic Routes and Charging Stops: Mapping out scenic routes with charging stops encourages tourists to explore while keeping their EVs charged.
  • Renewable Energy Integration: Combining charging stations with renewable energy sources aligns with the principles of sustainable tourism and minimizes the carbon footprint of charging operations.
  • Silent Discovery: Electric cars provide a quieter, less intrusive way to explore nature reserves, wildlife habitats, and cultural sites.
  • Extended Journeys: Electric vehicles’ increasing range capabilities enable travelers to embark on longer journeys without compromising the environment.
  • Educational Opportunities: Electric car tours can educate tourists about the benefits of sustainable transportation and inspire them to adopt greener practices in their daily lives.
  • Tourism Industry Partnerships: Collaboration between travel companies, car rental agencies, and charging infrastructure providers promotes seamless EV rental experiences for tourists.
  • Government Incentives: Governments can encourage the adoption of electric cars by offering incentives, such as tax breaks or reduced charging fees, to tourists and local EV users alike.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Stakeholders can work together to raise awareness about sustainable travel options, showcasing the benefits of electric cars in reducing environmental impact.
  • Tour Operator Collaboration: Collaborative efforts between tour operators, car rental companies, and charging infrastructure providers can create seamless EV rental options for travelers.
  • Infrastructure Expansion: Developing a widespread and accessible charging network ensures that tourists can confidently choose electric vehicles for their journeys.
  • Educational Initiatives: Raising awareness among tourists about the benefits of electric cars and their role in sustainable tourism can drive adoption and advocacy.

The integration of electric vehicles into sustainable tourism signifies a departure from conventional travel practices. By embracing electric mobility, destinations are sending a powerful message about their commitment to preserving natural beauty, reducing pollution, and offering authentic, eco-friendly experiences to visitors. As electric cars continue to evolve and charging infrastructure expands, the symbiotic relationship between sustainable tourism and electric mobility will flourish, ushering in a future where exploration and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

Electric vehicles are driving a new era of sustainable tourism, aligning with the ethos of environmentally responsible travel. By integrating electric cars into travel experiences, we can explore the world while leaving a lighter carbon footprint. As destinations increasingly embrace electric mobility, they not only enhance their appeal to environmentally conscious travelers but also contribute to a global movement towards more responsible and sustainable tourism practices.

Best Rome Tours with Kids

Free walking tours in rome italy, city walking tour.

First time visiting Rome? Traveling on a budget? No problem, the  Free Walking Tours of Rom e  is the perfect tour for you and your family.

This two-hour city tour meets at the Spanish Steps in the city center twice during the peak season. They offer morning and afternoon tours.

In the morning, your English-speaking tour guide will lead a group of no more than 20 through the historic center. Along the way, they will provide a brief overview of ancient Roman history and modern daily life.

Some of the sights you will visit date back to the Roman Empire, including the Column of Marcus Aurelius, the Temple of Hadrian, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Castel Sant’Angelo with a view of St. Peter’s Basilica.

If you take the afternoon tour, expect to explore different landmarks like an ancient Roman Aqueduct, the Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum, the Imperial Forums, and outside the Colosseum.

Most major European cities offer free walking tours where you can tip your guides at the end of the tour. Due to their huge popularity, Rome Free Walking Tours requires a deposit of €1 to confirm your booking. We recommend a tip in cash or card once the tour is finished!

These cheap tours are a great way to see the highlights of a new city and welcome travelers of all ages.

Best Food Tours Rome

Pizza making class.

Booking a pizza-making class on a vacation to Rome is a no-brainer. This local, unique experience is something the entire family (and your taste buds) will enjoy! Rome4Kids Tours runs some of the best family tours in the city. They offer both private and group pizza-making classes in Rome for kids .

This one-hour workshop is located in a real pizzeria near Piazza Navona so it’s in a super central location. The class is held twice a day around lunch and dinner time. It is the perfect amount of time for the attention spans of young children. They will love learning new cooking skills in a fun, hands-on way.

Drinks are included and, of course, you get to eat your creation at the end!

Gelato Making Class

Everyone knows the best way to enjoy pizza is to follow it with a scoop or two of gelato afterward. Learn how to make authentic Italian gelato (different from ice cream!) in this highly-rated,  private gelato-making class .

Private classes allow the chef to give you special attention. Families will have ample time to ask questions about the gelato-making process. Everyone can wear fun aprons and chef hats and try a second gelato flavor in addition to the one you will make together.

Rome Culinary Food Tour

A walking tour of the city’s top culinary delights is one of the best Rome tours you can take, with or without kids. Secret Food Tours runs fantastic food tours all over the world. We highly recommend adding their top-rated Rome food tour  to your vacation.

Sample Roman pasta, authentic cannoli, lots of ham, salami, cheese, fresh pizza, gelato, and a signature secret dish. The company offers a private option which is a sensible idea when traveling with younger children. You can easily skip visiting coffee shops for espressos and wine pairings if you would prefer.

This tour lasts over three hours, which is great value! Another option is a tour with a private guide. This will allow you to travel at your own pace to make sure the whole family has a great time.

Twilight Trastevere Food Tour

Most will agree the best area for authentic Roman dishes and a true Rome experience is the neighborhood of Trastevere across the River Tiber. Check out this  perfect tour of the culinary scene in Trastevere at Twilight  if you’re traveling with older kids.

On this incredible four-hour tour, dine out on the best street food at restaurants like Da Enzo al 29 and ‘Spirito Divino . Expect to visit ancient wine cellars and listen to interesting stories about the neighborhood as you walk through it. You will learn how to spot fake gelato while gorging on the best gourmet scoops you’ve ever tasted.

It’s hands down one of the best tours in Rome for families with teenage kids , though children aged four and up are very welcome. You can choose the group tour option or enjoy a private tour to explore Trastevere your way!

Riding Tours in Rome

Bike ride at night.

Rome’s historical center is  huge . It’s full of incredible archaeological sites and iconic landmarks which would take you many days to explore on foot. Get out of the midday heat and save little legs by booking this cool  e-bike tour of Rome by night !

Over three hours, you can tick off many iconic spots on your Rome hit list as well as have a fun time with your family. Just some of the stops include Oppian Hill (one of the best views of Rome!), the Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Castel Sant’Angelo, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and Capitoline Hill.

Enjoy the sunset as well as the architecture of this beautiful city. This is one of the best Rome kids tours because they offer options for kids of all ages. You can request child seats, a trailer bike, or a child-sized bike so no one is left out.

Rome Golf Cart Tours

Another fun way to explore Rome on wheels is to book a golf cart tour for the whole family. Venture on a  golf cart tour along Rome’s Appian Way or explore Rome’s seven hills on a golf cart tour with Rolling Rome .

On a two-and-a-half-hour tour of the  Appia Antica  Roman road, head out of the crowded city and see important ancient sites. You will travel past the Aurelian Walls and the Baths of Caracalla followed by an underground tour of the Catacombs of Rome.

On the three-hour tour of Rome’s hills, you will visit over a dozen places including the famous Mouth of Truth from  Roman Holiday,  the Arch of Janus, and the Knights of Malta keyhole. Most of these spots are in or close to the historic center on top of famous Roman peaks like Capitoline, Aventine, and Palatine Hill.

Both of these tours of Rome are private. Not only are they two of the best kids’ tours of Rome, but they are both ideal if you’re traveling with older family members with limited mobility too.

History Tours in Rome

Gladiator school.

Rome’s Gladiator School  is exactly as awesome as it sounds. We are sure your kids will be talking about this experience for years.

Known as  Gruppo Storico Romano  in Italian, your children can take part in a two-hour lesson where they will learn how to become gladiators. They will be just as fierce as those who fought in the Colosseum during the times of Ancient Rome.

Passionate child-friendly guides with years of experience will teach your kids about the history of gladiatorial fights. They are provided with armor and (wooden) weapons as instructors teach them the skills necessary to ‘compete’ in one of the ‘bloody’ games at the end of the session.

Free drinks, a small snack, and free entrance to the Gladiator Museum of Rome are included in this experience.

Sistine Chapel

Visiting the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel can be a busy, overwhelming experience for adults, let alone kids! But you can’t visit Rome with kids without witnessing the beauty of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Make the most of your visit to the holy Vatican City by booking an early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel  or a  Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tour  with Context Travel.

Both tours offer skip-the-line tickets. The early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel is semi-private for up to six people and lasts one hour and 45 minutes. On the Vatican tour of both the museums and the Sistine Chapel, you can book the small-group or private option which lasts around three hours.

There are two of the best tours in Rome for families visiting Vatican City. You can choose the tour that makes sense for the age and interests of your kids. We promise your family will be glad you booked ahead and aren’t stuck waiting in a huge line outside in the baking sun!

Visiting Rome without a stop at the Colosseum is like visiting Australia’s Great Barrier Reef but not snorkeling. It has to be done! Luckily, the scale and history of this Seventh Wonder of the World are sure to impress even the most unfazed kids.

If you want to take a Colosseum family tour, there are so many great ones. This express Colosseum tour for kids  is a classic. The private family tour lasts two-and-a-half hours and includes a skip-the-line ticket, games, a treasure hunt, and prizes to engage little ones.

Booking a private, underground Colosseum tour will give you access to areas of this ancient ruin which are usually restricted to the general. Both the  underground tour of the Colosseum  and the  underground Colosseum tour with LivTours include skip-the-line tickets.

On either tour, you can visit the underground where animals were kept for gladiator fights, all levels of the structure, access to the exhibition, and further exploration at the Roman Forum.

Visiting the subterranean burial chambers of Rome’s Catacombs is a fun thing to do with children who are intrigued by spooky and macabre places. One of the best tours in Rome for families of the Catacombs is this  private Catacombs tour .

With over 2,000 years of history underneath Rome, it is a great place to learn about Roman gods, pagan temples, and Christian crypts. There are even graves of some of the first popes in the Rome Catacombs!

This tour goes the extra mile by offering luxury transfers to the city center. It lasts three hours and since it’s a private tour, you can linger at places or skip whatever you want.

Day Trips in Rome

Only two and a half hours south of Rome, Pompeii is the perfect place for a fascinating and educational day trip. However, the hassle of renting a car and driving on windy Italian roads is no one’s idea of fun!

LivTours offers a fantastic  semi-private, small-group day tour of Pompeii  or you can book a  private day tour to Pompeii and Capua with Tours of Pompeii.

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city near Naples whose residents tragically perished in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. They were preserved under the ash for over a century until excavations began and unearthed this window to the past.

LivTours works with an archaeologist in Pompeii who will show you around the site and answer any questions. Tours are limited to six people and include transfers to and from Rome in a luxury van.

Tours of Pompeii also includes transfers but has an extra stop in Capua, a city north of Naples with some fabulous ruins. This is also an opportunity to visit the second-largest Roman amphitheater after the Colosseum and all the top sites in Pompeii including the Vettii House, the Baths, the Forum, and the House of Faunus.

Ostia Antica

Do you only have space in your itinerary for a half-day tour? Viator offers five-hour  private tours of Ostia Antica from Rome .

This ancient Roman port town is only 17 miles away from Rome. Kids of all ages (even those in strollers!) are welcome on this tour which includes hotel pick-up, a driver, and a child-friendly guide.

Check out the ancient Roman buildings in Ostia Antica including the necropolis, dye houses, cleaners, large baths, city center, apartments, and bakery!

It’s a completely flexible tour and you could easily turn it into a full-day trip. The beach is only two miles away from Ostia Antica so it’s the perfect place to enjoy a family picnic.

Which providers and brands are affected?

In general, all services booked with the travel provider FTI Touristik GmbH are affected. This includes the FTI brands in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, the 5vorFlug brand in Germany, BigXtra Touristik GmbH, and the car hire brands DriveFTI. Cars&Campers, and Meeting Point Rent-a-Car. The affected services could be booked in retail travel agencies, on online booking platforms such as Check24, Ab-In-den-Urlaub, HolidayCheck, etc. or on our own booking platforms (fti.de, fti.at, fti.ch, fti.nl, 5vorflug.de, drive.de, ...).

Services booked with third-party providers (e.g. TUI, Alltours, DERTOUR, vtours, ...) via any of the websites operated by FTI Touristik are not affected.

You have booked a package holiday and you are already travelling?

(Note: a package holiday is a combination of hotel accommodation and flight, possibly with additional booked services)

If you have booked a package tour, the statutory insurance protection provided by the German Travel Safety Fund (“Deutscher Reisesicherungsfonds” - DRSF) applies in your case. The DRSF will ensure, as part of its legal mandate, that payments made are refunded in due time. You will be contacted as soon as all current travelers have been brought back and your eligibility has been confirmed.

(Note: a package tour is a combination of hotel accommodation and flight, possibly with other booked services)

9 Celebs Who Totally Lied During Their Home Tours

car e tours

“It was hard to ignore them so I just lied.”

Since the early days of MTV Cribs , fans have gotten an inside look at the homes of the rich and famous. Celebs go behind the scenes to show off their massive mansions, their incredible backyards and their fleet of luxurious cars. And while it’s fun to see how our favorite stars live, it turns out that these home tours might not be entirely accurate. Quite a few celebrities have later admitted to lying about parts of their tours -- from small things like their book collections to faking their entire home!

Find out what was fake about these home tours…

1. Ashley Tisdale

When Ashley Tisdale gave a tour of her home for Architectural Digest, she decided to spruce things up before the camera crews came inside. One of those updates included completely filling up empty shelves with books that she had never read. During filming she admitted that her husband had gone out to buy hundreds of books just days earlier.

“These bookshelves, I have to be honest, did not actually have books in them a couple of days ago. I had my husband go to a bookstore, and I was like, ‘You need to get 400 books,’” she shared . “Obviously my husband’s like, ‘We should be collecting books over time and putting them in the shelves.’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no, no. Not when AD comes.’”

Dakota Johnson Says Her Madame Web Gen Z Costars 'Annoy' Her

2. Dakota Johnson

Fans fell in love with Dakota Johnson ’s home when she gave a tour for Architectural Digest in 2020. While walking through, she pointed out a bowl of limes on the counter of her kitchen, sharing that she loved limes and loved displaying them. A year later, Dakota admitted that they were actually a prop placed in the kitchen by home stagers -- and she was actually allergic!

“I actually didn’t even know they were in there. I was giving the tour and went into the kitchen, and it was set dressing. I’m actually allergic to limes…Limes make my tongue itch,” she revealed on The Tonight Show . “It was hard to ignore them so I just lied. I went the full opposite direction.”

3. Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens gave viewers an inside look at her Hollywood home in an Architectural Digest video. While in the living room, she showed off her grand piano and even played a little bit of Mozart. While she did say in the video that the piano “doesn’t get used much,” it turns out that she doesn’t know how to play at all!

“The piano came from my previous house, but I don’t play. I don’t read music, really. I’m great at faking it,” Vanessa shared in an Architectural Digest article.

When JoJo was still a teenager, she gave fans a tour of her vacation home on MTV Cribs . Years later, she revealed that she had never lived in the home at any point in time and it actually belonged to her uncle and his family.

“It was so ridiculous. The thing is, we didn’t have a home at that point. My mom and I were living out of suitcases and we were mostly in hotels. So that was actually my uncle’s house, on the Cape. That wasn’t my house. That wasn’t my stuff. When I was sitting on the spinny thing, that was his kids. That’s the truth,” she told HuffPost .

She continued, “I should’ve balled hard, and been like, ‘Welcome to my crib, look at how luxurious it is,’ and I should have rented out a place. But no. I just used my uncle's crib. So that was me lying on Cribs .”

When 50 Cent appeared on Cribs , he showed off his mansion as well as a collection of luxury cars. Years later, when he ended up in court, he testified that much of his over-the-top lifestyle was a front. In actuality, his diamond jewelry was borrowed and his fleet of cars were mostly rented.

“It’s entertainment,” he said during the trial, according to the New York Daily News . “Those cars were rented.”

These Female Celebrities All Dated Much Younger Men

Former girl group 3LW appeared on Cribs years ago but they didn’t actually own the house that they toured on the show. During the episode, they explained that they had bought a house together while working on their second album and were all living together. It wasn’t until 2021 that Naturi Naughton revealed that the house wasn’t theirs -- and they didn’t even have their own cars.

“MTV did the Cribs and back when 3LW was hot. We had to pretend. But I didn’t have a car, I didn’t have a house, I didn’t have any of those things…But we did MTV Cribs ,” on The Breakfast Club . “I had to clean the house by 7 o’clock to give it back to the owner. We had to clean up all of our stuff, we had to get a cleaning person.”

7. Robbie Williams

When Robbie Williams was in his early 20s, he appeared on Cribs for the first time, showing off an eight-bedroom manor house in England. He even had butlers working on the property. It turns out the house was actually being rented from Jane Seymour and the butlers were hired just for the shoot.

“We didn’t let [Jane] know that I was going to pretend it was my house. And because I was, like, 23 and full of spunk, I didn’t even consider other people’s thoughts or feelings, so I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Jane Seymour,” he said during a radio station appearance .

While he was up front that he was renting the place, it turns out that parties definitely weren’t allowed and the owner reportedly sued him for $1 million for trashing the place and causing structural damage.

Back in 2008, Bow Wow’s episode of Cribs featured his fleet of luxury vehicles. While he showed them off as if they were his own, some eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the bottom of the cars were all branded with the word “prestige.” Upon further investigation, they discovered a company called Prestige Luxury Auto Rentals in Miami -- leading many to believe that he had actually rented all of the cars.

17-year-old and 19-year-old killed in crash after becoming trapped in engulfed car, HCSO says

KTRK logo

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A two-vehicle crash left two people dead on Sunday after a driver allegedly ran a red light.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said that just before 7 p.m., 19-year-old Braulio Tamez was driving a Chevrolet Camaro when he ran a red light at the E. Sam Houston Parkway and E. Little York intersection.

According to deputies, that's when Tamez and his passenger, 17-year-old Gilberto Guzman, collided with a Toyota Camry, which reportedly had the green light.

The impact caused the Camaro to hit a pole and burst into flames, leaving Tamez and Guzman trapped inside the car, the sheriff's office said. The Sheldon Fire Department responded to the scene, and once the fire was put out, they were both found dead.

The driver of the Camry, 33-year-old Daena Escalante, and her passenger, 31-year-old Blanca Velasco, were not hurt and stayed at the scene to cooperate with investigators, HCSO said.

Deputies said Escalante also did not show signs of being intoxicated.

An investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing.

How to get the best car insurance

  • Published: Jun. 01, 2024, 11:19 a.m.
  • NerdWallet | special to cleveland.com

For a lot of people, buying car insurance is like buying sliced bread. It’s not the most exciting purchase, and the options all seem similar. So thrifty shoppers might simply reach for the cheapest thing on the shelf. But like cheap bread, cheap car insurance may leave you wishing you spent a little more on quality.

“The cheapest is not always the best,” warns Jessica McNally, an agency owner with Goosehead Insurance in Dallas. That’s because there are lots of factors that make up a car insurance company. And while price is one of them, it’s best to look at the bigger picture.

Here’s what to look for when picking the best car insurance company.

1. Choose a financially stable company

The best car insurance companies have plenty of money on hand to pay for customers’ claims. It’s important to check an insurer’s financial stability before buying a policy, especially if it’s a smaller insurer you’ve never heard of.

There are several independent agencies that evaluate the financial strength of insurance companies. One example is A.M. Best. You can use its online search tool to find an insurer’s financial strength rating. Companies with a rating of A or higher are considered to have an excellent ability to pay out customer claims.

2. Check customer satisfaction ratings and reviews

Not every insurer is customer-first. That’s why it’s important to research the customer satisfaction of insurers you’re considering.

You can turn to surveys from companies like J.D. Power to find insurers with the best customer satisfaction scores. Or, if you don’t mind doing a little detective work, you can compare customer complaints against insurers by using the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ website . But take other people’s emotionally charged comments about companies or agents you might read online with a grain of salt, McNally advises.

3. Look for convenience

A great auto insurer should offer multiple ways to manage a policy. For example, some insurers allow customers to use a mobile app to file and track claims. But it’s hard to tell how simple it’ll be to file a claim or perform other essential tasks, like paying your premium, before becoming a customer.

Some telltale signs that an insurer will be easy to work with are high mobile app ratings, flexible customer service hours and an easy-to-use website with helpful content. Consider asking a company representative to walk you through the claims process to learn what you’ll need to do if you have to file a claim. And pay attention to how the company communicates with you. “If they don’t properly communicate, well, that’s a warning sign,” says Michael DeLong, a research and advocacy associate for the nonprofit Consumer Federation of America.

4. Pick an affordable company

Car insurance premiums are stretching to record-breaking heights, and almost half of U.S. consumers shopped for a new car insurance policy in the past year, according to an April 2024 report by J.D. Power. The best car insurance companies offer competitive rates and a variety of potential discounts.

It’s not hard to get car insurance quotes online from many companies. Make sure you compare the same coverage options throughout the quote-gathering process. And don’t forget to look for car insurance discounts, like breaks for being a good driver, paying your premium in full or driving a new car.

More tips to find the best car insurance

When shopping for the best car insurance, keep the following tips in mind.

  • Assess your needs. Before buying car insurance, take a moment to reflect on what’s important to you and your family. For example, maybe you prioritize affordability and a well-polished mobile app, but don’t need accident forgiveness .
  • Consider small insurers. There are lots of small insurance companies you’ve probably never heard of. These regional insurers may provide lower rates and better customer service than the big companies you see advertised on TV.
  • Work with an independent agent. While it may be easy to get quotes yourself, independent car insurance agents and brokers can streamline the process. These experts vet companies and compile quotes from small and large insurers on your behalf. Independent agents and brokers can especially come in handy if you have a less-than-perfect driving record and can’t find insurance on your own.
  • Do your research. Search online for recent mentions of a company in the news before buying a policy, recommends DeLong. If you find a company has lots of recent lawsuits against it, you may want to think twice about signing on the dotted line. “And if they’ve had to pay out settlements, that’s an even bigger red flag,” DeLong says.
  • Shop around once a year. Make a practice of shopping for car insurance every year — especially if price is important to you. Insurers adjust car insurance rates regularly, so what might have been the most affordable option last year may no longer be a bargain.

Here It Comes: Another Hot Summer in Europe

Extreme heat and other weather challenges are in the forecast this summer, and travel advisers, tourists and local officials are getting prepared.

Outside an ancient Roman structure -- the Colosseum in Rome -- a young woman in light summer clothing pours a bottle of water on a man's neck.

Europe, the world’s fastest-warming continent, is headed for another scorching summer, meteorologists warn. And travelers, once again, are heading to the hot spots.

Last year, large parts of southern Europe experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 118 degrees and lasting up to two weeks or more. The sweltering conditions upended vacations throughout the summer season as visitors collapsed from heat exhaustion at crowded tourist sites, and wildfires led to evacuations in Greece, Italy and Spain.

“Our computer models are in good agreement that it’s going to be another unusually hot summer, especially during late July through August,” said Todd Crawford, vice president of meteorology at Atmospheric G2 , a weather and climate intelligence firm based in Manchester, N.H. The company expects the magnitude of the heat to be similar to 2022, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, with the most anomalous heat projected in the south, in popular countries for travelers like Greece, Croatia and Italy.

Since 1991, Europe has been warming at twice the global average, and 23 of the 30 most severe heat waves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000, with five in the last three years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said several factors contribute to the continent’s vulnerability, including the proportion of European land in the Arctic — the fastest-warming region on earth — and changes in atmospheric circulation.

Yet despite the forecast and increasing trend of excessive summer heat, demand is still high for destinations where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higher in recent summers. Overall, U.S. demand for travel to Europe has increased since last year, according to the travel site Hopper . Rome, Paris and Athens are among the most searched cities out of billions of annual searches for summer vacations on Kayak and Expedia.

“The destinations are being booked again, and what really characterizes people is how quickly they forget and push back negative experiences,” said Stefan Gössling, a professor who researches tourism and climate change at Linnaeus University in Sweden. “People who were caught in life-threatening situations like the wildfires may reconsider where they travel, but for the broader population, we are not yet seeing a big change in decision-making because of the heat.”

Green spaces and heat officers: Cities adapt

As the summer approaches, popular destinations that were hit hard last year are working on protocols to make residents and tourists safe and more comfortable. In 2021, Athens became the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer to oversee those efforts. One of the first steps was to categorize heat waves by severity, like hurricanes, as an early warning system for the potential impact on human health. It is also naming heat waves to emphasize their potential risks.

“Heat is a silent killer and projections for the coming years show that it will only get worse, so we are redesigning our city and making changes to adapt,” said Elissavet Bargianni, the chief heat officer for Athens. Beyond raising awareness, the city plans to implement additional measures, which include increasing the number of green spaces and creating cool public areas.

For visitors planning to visit Athens this summer, Ms. Bargianni advises using the Extrema Global app that calculates the coolest route for getting from point A to point B according to the current temperature and density of the trees. The city already has several air-conditioned cooling centers that are free.

During last July’s heat wave, the Acropolis was forced to close between midday and the early evening to protect visitors after some of them collapsed from the heat. The ministry of culture could make the same decision this year, Ms. Bargianni said, if the heat is severe.

Heat and tours: Travel advisers get creative

Travel advisers are also factoring heat into flexible itineraries. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris and Athens, they are scheduling sightseeing in the cooler morning and evening hours, and arranging air-conditioned transportation.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

If clients insist on taking midday tours, the company will work with local partners to make the experience as comfortable as possible. “If there is a six-hour tour, for example, they will cut it down to four and take them to an air-conditioned gelateria for a break,” Mr. Portuesi said.

It is not only the heat that travel advisers have had to grapple with, but also other unpredictable weather events. Last summer, while some parts of the continent were hot and dry, others were cold and wet. “There was a period during the summer peak when it was hotter in the Dolomites than it was in Sicily,” said Jennifer Schwartz, the Italy-based partner of Authentic Explorations. “The most important aspect of our job is to set expectations about the variables and guide people instead of saying it’s too hot, don’t come.”

Heat insurance?

To help travelers book with more confidence, Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. When booking through a Sensible partner, travelers will be able to add daily protection and if the temperature exceeds a threshold — usually set between 90 and 100 degrees — they can claim reimbursement. Currently, the insurance is only available in the United States, but, the company said, will gradually be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere.

“The goal of the company is to cover everything that can ruin a trip, and usually it’s rain, but temperature is number two,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year.

Customers do not need to cancel their trip in order to be reimbursed. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold. “Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” Mr. Cavanaugh said.

Heading to cooler climes

Some travelers who were caught in Europe’s heat waves last summer are seeking cooler destinations this summer in places like Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Flight searches for Tromsø, Norway, for example, have increased by 85 percent over 2023, according to Kayak.

Joanna Walker, a 43-year-old recruiter from Boston, was caught in a blistering heat wave with her family in Italy last July and vowed never to return during the summer. She said she had been advised to travel during the shoulder season, but couldn’t because her children were in school.

“We couldn’t even cool off in the pool because there was no shade and the water was hot,” Ms. Walker recalled. “We wanted to see the sights in Florence and have long lunches in the piazzas, but instead we were stuck in our overpriced villas under the air-conditioning.”

This year her family has booked a tour of Norway’s fjords in July, where temperatures linger in the high 60s. “It’s going to be a different vibe to Italy for sure, lots of nature and not as much history, but at least it will be cool enough to experience something.”
