Cape town travel guide video.
Nestled in the shadows of Table Mountain and close to the foaming waves of the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Town is a city thatâs never far from the true majesty of the wild.
Hiking along one of the many nature trails will give you the chance to see wild antelope, ostriches or even baboons. Travel a little further and youâll find African penguins in their thousands on the sands of Boulders Beach. For a more relaxed day out, take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain and allow yourself time to marvel at one of the greatest views in the world.
On returning to the city, you can soak up the atmosphere by settling down for a picnic amongst the floral gems in the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
If youâre interested in South Africaâs complex past, historical gold can be found at the South Africa Maritime Museum, Slave Lodge or the recently opened Jewish Museum. Nelson Mandelaâs long struggle for freedom will come to life before your eyes if you visit Robben Island, where he was imprisoned during the years of apartheid.
Local delicacies such as spicy Babotie or soothing Melktert are well worth a taste. Choose from delicious street food straight from the carts in the Islamic quarter or todayâs catch served up by the finest restaurants around on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
Many settlers have left their mark since Cape Town was first established by the Dutch East India Company. This can best be seen in the mixture of architectural styles around the city. Local Cape Dutch style houses rub shoulders with colourful Edwardian, elegant Victorian and gleaming modern architecture.
Cape Townâs warm climate is tempered by the breeze off the Atlantic, bringing down the humidity so that the heat doesnât hit so hard. There is much to be discovered on the outskirts of the city. Pack more into your stay by hiring a car or trying out the public bus network to explore the myriad of wonders in Table Mountain National Park.

Cape Town Travel Guide
Cape Town is South Africa's crown jewel and the most European city you'll find on the continent. Founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1652, it was South Africa's first attempt at a modern metropolis, earning it the nickname "The Mother City." Because of its strategic location at the southwestern tip of Africa, for centuries it played an important role in global trade. Today it's one of South Africa's three capital cities. The metro area covers 950 square miles and is home to 3.5 million people. The city's setting, a dramatic coastline in the shadow of Table Mountain National Park, is as picturesque as its history is problematic. Like the rest of South Africa, Cape Town is still trying to recover from the apartheid era which ended in 1994. While crime and corruption are still issues, in 2010 the city helped host the FIFA World Cup and tourism has only grown since then.
Best Time to Go
Cape Town is worth visiting year-round. That said, it looks different each season. Late December through March is South Africa's summer. It's when Cape Town is alive with tourists escaping their own winters back home and locals enjoying the gorgeous weather. It's sunny, dry, and warm enough to warrant a dip in the ocean. The city's social calendar is packed with events, and while prices might be higher during this peak season, at least everything is open. If you're looking for lower prices and fewer people, visit during the winter, late June through late September. Pack a raincoat because winter means wet. If your goal is to see whales, check out the Hermanus Whale Festival usually held in late September. However, July and August are also considered great months for whale watching. Finally, the shoulder seasons can be just as unforgettable. Spring, September through early December, is when the wildflowers are in full bloom. Autumn, late March through early June, is thought to be the best time to go cage diving with great white sharks.
Things to Know
Currency : Rand (ZAR) ($1 USD = 14.27 ZAR; Check the current exchange rate )
Tipping: Tipping is greatly appreciated in Cape Town. If the service is good, 10% is customary. Sometimes gratuity is added at restaurants, especially for groups, so check your bill before accidentally tipping twice.
Language : Most sources say there are 11 official languages in South Africa (some say 12). Xhosa, English, and Afrikaans are among the most spoken. That said, most people speak English, and all signs in Cape Town are in English. There's no need for Google Translate. However, it can be helpful to know a few common terms.
Lekker: great or nice; "That was a lekker surf session."
Braai: outdoor barbecue; "If you're lucky, locals will invite you to their weekend braai."
Bru: friend/pal; "My bru works at a winery in Stellenbosch."
Calling Code : +27 21
Outlets : South Africa uses type C,D,M, and N plugs. Pack an adapter or be prepared to buy one in Cape Town. The voltage is 230V and standard frequency is 50Hz. So, you may also need to buy a converter if you're using an appliance requiring more voltage.
How to Get Around
Trains: Cape Town's trains exist as the Metrorail , but they're not particularly reliable. If you ask locals, they can also be unsafe. It's not recommended to ride them alone, especially at night. If you do want to take one, the most popular line is the South line running to Simon's Town. Tickets can be purchased at stations or from Metrorail officials with portable ticket machines.
Buses: While there are several local buses and minibuses, basically vans shuttling commuters, the best buses for visitors are the MyCiTi buses. They connect with the airport and serve scheduled stops in high traffic tourist areas. Fares are loaded onto myconnect cards which can be purchased at station kiosks and select retailers and ATMs. Another option is the City Sightseeing Bus. These Hop-On-Hop-Off buses also make scheduled stops at popular tourist destinations and include commentary in 15 languages. The Red Line covers the northern part of Cape Town, and the Blue Line goes all the way to Hout Bay in the south. Tickets can be purchased online .
Taxis/Rideshare: Ubers are everywhere in Cape Town. They're reliable, safe and extremely affordable. A 45-minute Uber from downtown Cape Town to a Muizenberg can cost as little as $12. They also service the airport. If you don't have Uber and want to use a traditional taxi, try to use a call ahead car service that is verified.

Visit Robben Island

But this infamous island has 400 years of its own fascinating history. Once occupied by wildlife and indigenous peoples, it was important for trade and hunting during the Age of Exploration before later becoming home to everything from banished convicts to a whaling station and even an insane asylum. Today, it's where visitors can tour the former prison and see the cell where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Other attractions on the island include a penguin sanctuary and lepers' graveyard.
Visit the Cape Winelands
Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

There are hundreds of wine farms growing grapes in Cape Town's fertile backyard known as the Winelands. Most are within an hour's drive of the city and are open to the public for tastings and tours. This region, one of the oldest wine regions outside of Europe, is famous for its Pinotage, a bold red wine birthed in South Africa. Even if you don't drink alcohol, it's a scenic drive through pastoral communities including Stellenbosch, a 350-year-old university town filled with Cape Dutch architecture.
Best Shopping
V&a waterfront.
Address: 19 Dock Rd, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town, 8001 Phone: +27 21 408 7600 Website

Address: Main Road, Kalk Bay, Cape Town, 7990 Website
This quiet former fishing village turned popular day trip is about a 45-minute drive from Cape Town, but it's worth it if you're into eclectic shops you won't find elsewhere. Spend the afternoon browsing in independent bookstores or hunting for antiques. Most shops can be found on Main Road, but you never know what treasure awaits in an alley in Kalk Bay.
Greenmarket Square
Address: Burg St &, Longmarket St, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, 8000 Website
Since 1696 when the cobblestones were laid Greenmarket Square has been a popular meeting space. Today, it's where locals and visitors alike barter with vendors who set up shopsâfrom formal stalls to makeshift tablesâfilled with home goods and African arts and handicrafts. It's open every day, but the first Thursday of every month during Cape Town's city-wide First Thursdays celebrations is the best time to catch live music and street performances.
Neighbourgoods Market
Address: 373 Albert Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town, 7925 Website
A beautifully restored old biscuit mill couldn't be a more perfect setting for this farmers market open every Saturday. This is where shoppers find souvenirs that aren't mass produced. They're made by entrepreneurial locals selling everything from leather bags to soaps and sustainable fashions. Of course, there's also fresh seasonal produce and delicious street food.
Neighborhoods to Know
City Bowl : Nestled in a natural depression between the coast, Table Mountain and Signal Hill, City Bowl is the heart of Cape Town. It's home to the central business district, impressive municipal buildings, and several of Cape Town's oldest and most Insta-worthy streets. There's the well-preserved Dutch colonial architecture on Long Street, the colored houses lining the hills of the Bo-Kaap, and the V&A where you can paddleboard on canals winding through the bustling waterfront district.
Cape Flats : Although most tourists never step foot here, it would be remiss not to mention the Cape Flats. This lowland area is home to Cape Town's most infamous suburbs or townships. It's where the black and colored populations were forced to relocate during the Apartheid years. Although it's a bit off-the-beaten tourist path, it is possible to visit the townships with a guide and learn about life in them with the locals. Most visitors start with a walking tour of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay.
Atlantic Seaboard : Informally called Cape Town's Riviera, the Atlantic Seaboard is a string of oceanfront communities on Cape Town's west coast. This is where one finds the fanciest hotels (mostly boutique properties although there are chains like Radisson), high-rise luxury condos for rent, and of course the eye-catching mansions belonging to Cape Town's elite. Each community, centered around a beach, has its own character from the uber posh Camp's Bay to the fishing village vibes of Hout Bay.
Woodstock : Technically a part of City Bowl, Woodstock is like Cape Town's answer to Williamsburg in Brooklyn. If you're interested in art, theater or anything hipsters like, this former industrial area is a destination in itself. It's still a little rough around the edges, and you probably shouldn't wander the streets alone at night, but it's not to be missed. If nothing else, in 10 years you can say you visited Woodstock before everyone knew how cool it was and property developers ruined it.
Cape Town has four seasons although they're not as distinct as northern destinations. It has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are dry and not too hot, and winters are rainy, but mild. The highest temperatures occur in February when it can reach the mid-80s°F. The coolest temperatures occur in July when temperatures are typically in the mid-50s°F. June is usually the wettest month with around 14 days of rain. Cape Town is famous for its strong winds. Today, they're good for kitesurfing. Hundreds of years ago they were the cause of many historic shipwrecks.

After dropping 10% since the start of the year, the yen is at the lowest rate to the dollar in three ... [+] and half decades, making it a great time to visit Japan.
The dollar is strong right now, and its value has risen steadily against many foreign currencies throughout the end of 2023 and up to today. On May 1, the New York Times listed ten major foreign countries that had lost significant ground against our currency since the first of the year, making them less expensive to visit. By significant, I mean as much as 10% (Japan)âand thatâs just the past five months. Many of these currencies had already dropped last year, making the travel savings for travelers even more dramatic.
In addition, there was a vital 11th entry, the Eurozone, which has lost 3% more in 2024 and includes 20 additional countries, many of which are among the most desirable tourism spots on earth, such as Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Portugal. I traveled in the Piemonte region of Italy just a few weeks ago, and while I have been to Italy many times over the years, every day I was shocked by how low the prices for food and drink were, and Italy is one of the pricier of these popular Eurozone countries.
Beyond this, the Times reported that more than two-thirds of the 150 global currencies tracked by Bloomberg had weakened against the dollar. Thatâs not always a great thing for industry, business and investments, but it is a big bonus for travelers going abroad. However, some of these roughly 100 declining currency destinations are much better buys right now than others, across nearly every type of travel, from luxury to budget.
Cape Town's vibrant waterfront is full of great restaurants, and was just rated the cheapest major ... [+] city to have dinner.
Eating is one of the areas the strong dollar saves big on, and to exacerbate this, just about everywhere in the world tips less, usually much less, than we do. In most of Western Europe tipping at bars and restaurants is not expected and when you are wowed and do tip, weâre talking 5-10%. Just as the dollar has strengthened in recent years, our tipping culture has gone insane, tipping more for more things, including self-service. No one in Europe is going to use a credit card machine that tries to get you to tip for taking a water bottle out of a cooler like we do here, and when you eat out, youâll be saving 10% or more on top of the currency just by following normal dining protocols and etiquette.
NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again
âgodzilla minus oneâ is coming to netflix this weekend, but thereâs a catch, sudden u s dollar collapse fear predicted to trigger a 15 7 trillion etf bitcoin price gold flip as countries go dual currency.
Two weeks ago, Londonâs Telegraph , one of my favorite newspaper travel sections, ran a big package on the â 50 Greatest Bargains in Travel .â Mind you thatâs for readers spending pounds, which have also declined against the dollar, 1.5% just this year, making these bargains even more dramatic for Americans. They wrote, âYou can find plenty of bargain places to eat in different cities around the world, but among the major tourist destinations surveyed by Post Office Money each year, it is Cape Town that delivers the best value overall. You can typically find a three-course evening mealâincluding a bottle of wineâfor ÂŁ34.64 for two people. In Europe, Lisbon is reckoned to offer the most affordable dining, with a bells-and-whistles meal costing ÂŁ36.60.â Thatâs $44 and $46.50 respectively (for two!). Iâve eaten plenty of great meals in both Cape Town and Lisbon, and can confirm thereâs a ton of bang for the buck, but right now, even more.
The entire Eurozone has weakend against the dollar, but for foodies, Portual has some of the best ... [+] buys in Western Europe.
The most obvious savings are on daily expenses such as food, drink, internal transportation (trains, taxis, etc.), attractions, entertainment and shopping. Lodging is also affected, but sometimes not at the high end of luxury, especially Western chains that price in dollars, and many 4- and 5-star brands keep rates more in line with what you pay here rather than local economic realities. But there are still luxury lodging bargains, especially independent and locally owned brands.
There have been other recent list of great travel bargain spots, but they tend to focus on individual cities or resorts, not countries, some quite small and some not so popularâKenyaâs Mombasa is really cheap right now but I donât know anyone who is headed there. If you want to really enjoy the savings and effect of the strong dollar, but do it with luxe flair in some of the most desirable vacation spots on the planet, here are the top places to go.
Stop dreaming about going to South Africa and just go!
South Africa
While the currency has âonlyâ lost about 2% this year, South Africa was already a great buy, and just getting better. I just went to Alto 234, a trendy 360-degree rooftop champagne bar overlooking Johannesburg, and a Macallan 12-year triple cask was $5.50. A Don Julio Repsoado tequila was less than $4.75. In New York youâd be lucky if you could find either of those for under twenty bucks. Wagyu Beef Sliderâwith fries? Six dollars. The Saxon is by far the top luxury hotel in the city, where Nelson Mandela stayed when he wrote his autobiography, along with a Whoâs Who of other famous clientele, and it also has one of Africaâs top spas. A 60-minute massage, probably the priciest youâll find in the city, is $90, strip mall pricing here. Booking.com has a King room at the Taj Cape Townâone of the worldâs top luxury hotel brandsâfor $118. I mean come on!
You'll save even more in Japanâand have a great cultural experienceâby avoiding Western chain hotel ... [+] brands and indulging in locals Inns known as ryokan.
No country as desirable for travel has had its currency drop as precipitously as Japanâs, and the last time the yen was this cheap was 1990. So, if you have not been to in three and a half decades, consider it. In addition, Americans have always misperceived Japan as an expensive place, which is somewhat (but still not entirely) true of Tokyo, its most visited city, but not of its countryside and many other charming places. Kyoto is high on every âover tourismâ list and Iâd avoid it, but otherwise the islands are your oyster, with some of the worldâs most exceptional food. Plus, a cool part about any visit to Japan is staying in ryokans, the traditional Inns or B&Bs, and eating at local restaurants, and these are areas where youâll save big. Iâve been skiing in Japan a few times, and even when the yen was strong, it was much cheaper than in the U.S. Now the yen is definitely not strong.
Buenos Aires is known as "The Paris of South America," but the steak is much betterâand much ... [+] cheaper.
Second in terms of recent change only to Japan, Argentinean pesos have lost nearly 8% of their values just this yearâand that followed a big December plungeâbut it was a bargain spot already. Despite rampant inflation eroding some of the savings, it has great deals, and the Telegraph reporter described a week there eating ÂŁ5 steaks and attending performances in one of the worldâs most beautiful opera houses for ÂŁ3 a ticket! Buenso Aires is arguably the steakhouse capital of the world and has many famed venues that will run you about a third of what top steakhouse meals cost here, with even bigger savings on the excellent Argentinean wines that are dirt cheap. If you go to a not famous localâs steakhouse, youâll save even more but still eat great food, as most of the beef in Argentina is grass-fed, drug free, pasture raised and of superior quality to the typical domestic version we eat. Lodging? I just pulled up todayâs hotel pricing for the capital on Hotels.com, and the legendary award-winning Alvear Place, the cityâs most iconic luxury hotel, was $400. In many cities it would be a thousand or more. The NH, a great upscale European brand where I would gladly stay, was less than $100 a night!
Portugal's Algarve region is famed for beaches, golf, weatherâand some of the best cheap wine on the ... [+] planet.
While almost all of Western Europe has gotten cheaper, Portugal has been the regionâs bargain spot since before the advent of the Euro, and this continues to be the case. In addition, it has recently become a travel hotspot, and is having none of those intangible âmomentsâ as an in destination. Itâs hardly surprising, given the great food, great wine, history, beaches, golf, wealth of attractions and amazing weather. Itâs one of the closest European destinations, with shorter flights, and the national airline TAP, a member of the worldâs largest consortium, Star Alliance, offers a great value and quality for price proposition (I just bought tickets on TAP and they were much cheaper than U.S. carriers for the same route). As the Telegraph noted, Lisbon is the least expensive dining out city in Western Europe, but the food is also better than some of the alternatives. They also singled out a popular vacation region here, the Algarve, as Europeâs top wine bargain, noting that âa glass of decent Portuguese red will cost you about ÂŁ1.62.â Thatâs two bucks.
Others to Consider
Canada is full of vibrant cities and stunning natural wonders like Banff National Parkâall cheaper ... [+] to visit right now.
Brazil: The 5% drop in 2024 is one of the biggest in the world.
Canada: It may not be as sexy as some international hotspots, but is close, easy to get to, has an amazing diversity of offerings, and has lost nearly 3.5% already this year.
The UK: Perennially one of the most popular international destinations for American travelers, the pound has lost more than 1.5% in the past few months.
If you've been waiting for the right time to visit Australia, it's right now.
Australia: Ever since the pandemic, those far off destinations travelers wanted to visit âsomedayâ have become places to go now, thanks in part to the increased fatalism and realization that life is unpredictable. For many Australia is the âsomedayâ Bucket List trip, and if you go now, not only will you have a great time, youâll find it 4% cheaper than it was just several months ago.
