Mark Cavendish Takes Sprint Win in Stage 2 of the Tour de Hongrie

The Manx Missile outsprinted Dylan Groenewegen for his second win of the season.

105th milano torino 2024

Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) was first to the line in a bunch sprint for the stage 2 win in Kazincbarcika at the Tour de Hongrie. His team masterfully led him into the final 200 meters, where Cav launched ahead of Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) and Jon Aberasturi (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

The stage took on 162 km from Tokaj to Kazincbarcika. There were two category 3 climbs and three sprints.

After the lead group was reeled back by the peloton, sprinters from Astana, Lidl-Trek, and Euskaltel-Euskadi led the group into the final two kilometers. But Astana proved dominant into the final 500 meters to ensure Cav’s win.

“I’m really happy with it,” Cavendish said in a post-race interview. “Yesterday, we didn’t quite hit the lead-out properly. It was super good, and everyone committed 100 percent yesterday, but we were just a bit eager and a bit too soon.

“We talked and talked about that to rectify it today. It was a completely different finish today, no big boulevard or corners to make it technical, and we executed it exactly how we wanted it. I’m so happy.”

Even though the Giro d’Italia is getting most of the press and attention this month, the 45th edition of the Tour de Hongrie is well worth some attention. The tour includes five stages, 854 kilometers, nearly 8,000 meters of ascent, 10 categorized climbs, two classic sprinter stages, and two mountain finishes.

Scottie Scheffler score today: Complete Round 2 results, highlights after arrest at PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler had an eventful second day at the 2024 PGA Championship. And that's before his morning tee time.

The world No. 1 golfer was headed to the course early Friday morning. There was a heavy police presence and a major traffic backup, and Scheffler attempted to drive around the traffic to reach the Valhalla Golf Club. Police had been on the scene of a fatality in which a pedestrian had been struck and killed by a bus while attempting to cross the street around 5 a.m. ET.

Scheffler attempted to drive around the police on a median, and after being instructed by police to stop, he reportedly continued to drive toward the entrance. An officer attached himself to Scheffler's car and Scheffler drove for 10 to 20 yards before Scheffler stopped.

Scheffler reportedly told police he did not know they were officers. Scheffler believed they were just security officers, and attempted to explain the miscommunication, but was placed in handcuffs and taken to jail.

Scheffler was booked in jail at 7:28 a.m. ET, according to Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections records. The Kentucky Court of Justice listed the charges faced by Scheffler as second degree assault of a police officer, third degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic. The assault of a police officer is considered a Class C felony.

The tee time for Scheffler was moved up to 10:08 a.m. ET. He was released from jail and arrived at the Valhalla Golf Club at 9:12 a.m. ET. He then reached the driving range where he began practicing ahead of his tee time.

How did Scheffler handle the pressure? Perhaps better than anyone could have expected. Scheffler turned in a sterling 5 under performance, moving to 9 under for the tournament overall. He only had one bogey the entire day and tallied six birdies. He vaulted himself all the way up to third by the end of his day.

Sporting News tracked the latest updates and highlights from his day at the Valhalla Golf Club. Follow for live results from his day.

Scottie Scheffler score today

Scottie scheffler live updates, highlights from round 2 at 2024 pga championship.

(All times Eastern)

Hole 9, Par 4

Shot 4: Scheffler finishes out the day making par on his final hole. He sits at 9 under and is still two shots off the lead. Excellent performance from Scheffler considering the circumstances.

Shot 3: Scheffler won't birdie the hole, but puts himself in tremendous position to make par with an excellent shot that puts him just a few feet away from the hole. A nice recovery after a shaky second shot.

Shot 2: Scheffler lands off the green and would need to sink one heck of a shot to net a birdie on his final hole of the day.

Shot 1: This should sound familiar by now. Scheffler's first shot of the day was right down the fairway. He sits 141 yards from the hole and is set up to potentially pick up another birdie to end his day.

Hole 8, Par 3

Shot 3: Scheffler easily puts in his third shot for par. He stays at 9 under on the day and is still two strokes off the lead.

Shot 2: Scheffler nearly drops to 10 under with a putt that comes up just short of the hole.

Shot 1:  Another outstanding start for Scheffler, who lands a few feet away from the hole on the par 3.

Hole 7, Par 5

Shot 4:  Unreal putt for Scheffler as he sinks the birdie to fall to 9 under.

Shot 3:  Scheffler had to wait a minute for his next shot, and it's not a great one as it hits near the pin and rolls a bit further away. He'll have a long putt for birdie and two chances for par or better.

Shot 2:  Scheffler's shot carries a bit too far and gets into the gallery. Not exactly where he wanted it, but he'll have some room for error on the hole.

Shot 1:  Scheffler keeps his tee shot on the fairway for a nice start to the par 5.

Hole 6, Par 4

Shot 4:  Another par for Scheffler. With only three holes left today, Scheffler has been at par or better for all but one hole.

Shot 3:  Scheffler takes it easy, flipping the ball just a bit past the hole. Should have a good chance at landing par with his putt.

Shot 2:  Scheffler's iron shot hooks a bit right and comes up shy of the green. He'll have another up and down.

Shot 1:  Another hole, another fairway made by Scheffler.

Hole 5, Par 4

Shot 4:  Tap-in for par.

Shot 3:  Scheffler was perhaps an inch away from chipping in that shot. He flipped it up and watched it slowly roll perfectly on track before stopping just shy.

Shot 2:  Scheffler hit that shot a bit too hard and it carried over the green. Up and down coming up to try and make par.

Shot 1:  Another fairway made for Scheffler.

Hole 4, Par 4

Shot 3:  The march to the top continues. Scheffler is now one back of the lead after dropping in another birdie.

Shot 2:  Nice and easy shot for Scheffler as he just lifts it up to the pin with ease. Close putt coming up for birdie.

Shot 1:  Scheffler begins the hole with a stripped ball down the middle of the fairway.

Hole 3, Par 3

Shot 3:  Not an easy shot, but Scheffler makes it happen. He saves par to stay 7 under.

Shot 2:  Scheffler's shot comes up a bit shy of the hole. He'll have a long par putt to make.

Shot 1:  Iron shot off the tee carries a bit wide left and appears to land in front of the bunker. It'll have to be an up-and-down for Scheffler.

Hole 2, Par 4

Shot 3:  Another birdie for Scheffler, who now has birdies on two of his past three holes. He's now tied for fourth.

Shot 2:  Scheffler nearly landed an improbable eagle, but it instead lands a few feet past the hole after a close bounce. He'll putt downhill for a chance at another birdie.

Shot 1:  Another great start by Scheffler as he sends his driver right down the middle of the fairway.

Hole 1, Par 4

Shot 4:  Scheffler knocks down the par putt.

Shot 3:  So close for Scheffler as it lips around the edge. He'll have to settle for a tap-in par.

Shot 2:  Decent approach by Scheffler. The ball lands a bit below the pin, but gets him on the green with two putts to make par or better.

Shot 1:  Perfect drive by Scheffler down the middle of the fairway to start the hole.

Hole 18, Par 5

Shot 4:  Makes it look easy with a birdie putt. He finishes the back nine 2 under for the round and 6 under for the tournament. Great start for him as he heads to the front nine.

Shot 3:  Just about perfection for Scheffler on what was an otherwise challenging place to make a shot. He combats some thick, wet grass to drop the ball a few feet about the pin to give himself an opportunity at a birdie putt.

Shot 2:  Tough lie for Scheffler as he can't get the layup and it winds up falling below the fairway. He'll have a difficult approach on the par 5.

Shot 1:  Powerful drive by Scheffler, though it appears to carry over just a bit to the right and off to the side of the fairway.

Hole 17, Par 4

Shot 4:  Another par for Scheffler. He remains 1 under for the day so far.

Shot 3:  Scheffler had the mustard on the putt, but it hooked just wide right at the end. He'll have a short-range putt for par, hoping to make par or better for the sixth straight hole.

Shot 2:  Nice approach shot by Scheffler as he hits it a bit past the pin, but gets the ball to stay on the green.

Shot 1:  Scheffler missed the fairway on the 17th hole on Thursday, but he has no problem reaching it on Friday, stripping it down the middle for a strong start to the long par 4.

Hole 16, Par 4

Shot 4:  A nudge from Scheffler and he comes away with another par.

Shot 3:  The putt from Scheffler just lips around the edge. He has to settle for par.

Shot 2:  Stellar iron shot by Scheffler that hits the green and hooks right toward the pin. He's set up in an excellent opportunity for birdie.

Shot 1:  Scheffler's drive off the tee appeared to be carrying a bit left, but it stayed in the fairway for a great start to the hole.

Hole 15, Par 4

Shot 4:  Easy par for Scheffler.

Shot 3:  The line was right for the birdie putt, but it slows down too close to the pin. He'll go for a third straight par.

Shot 2:  Scheffler reaches the green, but is a bit high over the pin. He'll have a tough putt to sink the birdie putt, and appears more likely to be aiming for another par.

Shot 1:  Powerful drive by Scheffler down the middle of the fairway to start the 15th hole.

Hole 14, Par 3

Shot 3:  Scheffler sinks the putt for par to stay 1 under for the day.

Shot 2:  Really long putt from the edge of the green that nearly goes in for his second long birdie putt of the day. Instead, he'll have to settle for another par shot on his next putt.

Shot 1:  Scheffler kicks off the par 3 by carrying the ball just to the left of the green. He'll have to go up and down for par.

Hole 13, Par 4

Shot 4:  Scheffler saves par with his second putt.

Shot 3:  Scheffler's birdie putt sails wide left and carries a bit too far past the hole for the next shot to be a guaranteed par putt. Should still have a good chance to save par.

Shot 2:  Nice approach shot by Scheffler as he sets himself up a few feet away from the hole. He'll have a decent look at birdie.

Shot 1:  Scheffler goes with an iron off the tee and has a good start by stripping it down the fairway.

Hole 12, Par 4

Shot 3:  Incredible 26-foot, birdie putt by Scheffler to get him back under par for the day.

Shot 2:  Scheffler opts to take it safe, just laying up his shot onto the green to set up a long putt for birdie or two putts for par.

Shot 1:  Scheffler starts with a solid drive off the tee, going a bit to the right of the fairway, but still putting him at a decent start to the 12th hole.

Hole 11, Par 3

Shot 4:  Back to an even par on the day for Scheffler.

Shot 3:  Scheffler's putt sails wide right, and he'll have to settle for bogey.

Shot 2: Scheffler opts to try and chip the shot toward the hole rather than go for a long putt, and he nearly chips it in, but it carries a bit past the hole. He should still have a close opportunity for par with the putter.

Shot 1:  Following hooked shots left by both Clark and Harman, Scheffler goes a bit to the right on the par 3. He still gets it to the edge of the green.

Hole 10, Par 5

Shot 4:  Easy birdie putt for Scheffler.

Shot 3:  Scheffler drops a nearly perfect shot onto the green and nearly started his day with another eagle. He'll have a short putt for birdie to start his second round.

Shot 2:  The lay-up shot by Scheffler gets him back into the fairway.

Shot 1:  Scheffler is announced into the tee box to a roaring applause. His drive off the tee at the 10th hole hooks a bit right and goes just off the fairway near the crowd.

9:34 a.m.:  Scheffler arrived at the range to begin practicing. He will wind up playing Friday.

Scottie Scheffler tee time today

Scheffler will tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET for Friday's Round 2. He was originally scheduled to tee off at 8:48 a.m. ET, but it was pushed back by the PGA Tour.

What to know from Xander Schauffele's PGA Championship win

By drilling a clutch 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole, Schauffele held off Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke to win his first career major championship. Schauffele’s score of 21-under-par is the lowest in men’s major history, and his 25 birdies tie the most ever by a player in a PGA Championship. Schauffele is the first player in history to make 25 or more birdies in multiple majors in his career, having done so previously at the 2019 Masters.

Reflecting on the evolution of DeChambeau

Reflecting on the evolution of DeChambeau

Wild to think a year ago this week at Oak Hill was basically the debut of this latest iteration of Bryson DeChambeau . Slimmed down. Talking about losing 18 pounds in 24 days — all water weight. A new caddie — one who had left the business to pursue other ventures.

I remember talking to Greg Bodine that week and him speaking about DeChambeau's evolution, most interestingly that he could now "dial it back and still swing his driver 10 miles per hour faster than he ever did five or six years ago".

It was the notion that DeChambeau was coming to combine both his original talent and his massive size/strength gains to find a happy medium. Now here we are.

DeChambeau: 'I didn’t take care of it earlier in the week'

DeChambeau: 'I didn’t take care of it earlier in the week'

You can hear the sense of regret in Bryson DeChambeau 's words. Here's what he had to say, speaking to Sky Sports after missing out on a PGA Championship playoff:

💬 “I didn’t have my best ball-striking week. I wasn’t too comfortable. So I have a little bit to work on there. But I’m proud of the way I fought today. My birdie on the 10th ignited the fire and I showed resilience.

“I thought the (number) might be good enough. Weird stuff can happen on the 18th. But I didn’t take care of it earlier in the week.

“I’m happy with my week but I want to win.”

Xander Schauffele wins PGA Championship for first career major victory

Xander Schauffele wins PGA Championship for first career major victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Xander Schauffele can finally remove the albatross from around his neck. Schauffele, golf’s beacon of unrewarded consistency, won the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on Sunday for his first career major victory.

He did it in one of the more memorable ways possible, sinking a six-foot birdie putt on 18 with the entirety of the crowd watching. After watching the ball circle the hole before finally dropping in to get Schauffele to 21-under-par, one stroke ahead of Bryson DeChambeau, he threw both arms into the air and let out perhaps the biggest smile of his career.

Starting the day in a loaded and crowded leaderboard full of top players, Schauffele shared the lead with Collin Morikawa, only adding more pressure to end his major woes. Schauffele failed to win starting in three final groups already this spring. Twenty times he’d finished in the top 20 of a major without a win. Each impressive week was also just another bitter-sweet reminder of not being good enough to win the trophy at the end.

But in a low-scoring week, Schauffele opened with a major-record 62 and finished with a 65 to properly establish himself as one of golf’s best players. He led or co-led after every round.

Read more here.

Schauffele felt the emotion with his winning putt

Xander Schauffele gets the microphone following his Wanamaker Trophy presentation, and his smile is dominating his face.

Here's what he said to CBS after getting his hands on the silverware:

💬 “I was kind of emotional after the putt lipped in. It’s been a while since I won and really, I just kept saying I needed to stay in my lane. That was hard all day but I stayed focused. I had some weird breaks coming into the house but we’re here now.

“I would be less of a patient person if that putt didn’t lip in! I didn’t want to go into a playoff with Bryson. We would probably have played 18!

“My Mum is back at home in San Diego and my Dad is in Hawaii. I just spoke to him. I had to hang-up pretty quickly because he was starting to make me cry. He was sat on the phone bawling. Everyone I have here makes me feel pretty special. I was pleased to do this for my team.”

The Wanamaker Trophy looks good on you, Xander.

A fleeting thought for DeChambeau

A fleeting thought for DeChambeau

Obviously no-one things of anyone other than the winner at this point. But it's hard not to feel for Bryson DeChambeau for a moment.

The adrenaline of his birdie on 18, the minutes of practicing for a playoff or victory that might come... And then doesn't.

Still, this is Xander Schauffele's moment, and he is about to get his hands on the Wanamaker Trophy.

Schauffele matches his best when it mattered

Schauffele matches his best when it mattered

Xander Schauffele ’s final-round 65 matches the lowest of his major championship career.

He twice closed with 65 at the 2021 Open and 2017 Open, but in both came from way down the board to finish T26 and T20.

Today, he made it count.

That's for the doubters

That's for the doubters

I must admit, I wasn't sure that putt was going to drop. But it did.

In fairness, a lot of people weren't sure Xander Schauffele were going to see today out either. But he did.

That record-equalling 62 on Thursday proved to be just the start. What a PGA Championship and what a first major for the 30-year-old.

Get to know Xander Schauffele

Want to get a feel for Xander Schauffele's makeup? How he approaches his place in the game? During a long chat at the Presidents Cup last year , he was asked about why he seems to hold back so much publicly.

“I feel prone to hermit because it’s easier to just focus on the golf,” Schauffele said. “It’s a safe space — hermitting is a safe space. Golf is such a weird game, you know? It’s so slow. Quiet. Non-contact. It makes it so much easier to not go scorched earth. If I just said, screw it, and said what I wanted all the time? No. As soon as you put yourself out there, let the bad things in, getting your mind going somewhere else, it’ll tear you apart. You’ve seen it happen to golfers.

“Instead, I just go at what I see as the agreeable rout,” he continued. “Just sort of agree with everything being said by other top players. Go along. Everyone falls into categories and I just try to stay on my little peninsula.”

Something to consider as it comes down to the 18th

Something to consider as it comes down to the 18th

As Xander Schauffele walks up the 18th fairway needing a birdie to win and a par to force a playoff with Bryson DeChambeau, consider that the par-5 hole is playing as the easiest hole on the course today (4.554 average score).

There have been two eagles, 40 birdies, 23 pars, eight bogeys and one "other."

Schauffele will have the putt to win it

Schauffele will have the putt to win it

That's a wonderful chip and run from Schauffle, which checks up short of the hole and leaves a tempter for the birdie that wins the championship.

DeChambeau returns to his playoff practice. Just in case.

Schauffle setting up a major-winning finish

Schauffle setting up a major-winning finish

Here we go. Schauffele is down in two at the par-five 18th after a super second shot.

Surely there's a PGA-winning birdie on the cards here...

Theegala holes out in style

T12: Sahith THEEGALA (-12) 73

It's not been the day Theegala was hoping for, but rolling in a 20-footer on 18 for a birdie may well add a bit of good feeling as he heads home.

Shane Lowry (-14) also wraps up on 18. He does it with a par to finish with 70 and tied-fifth for the championship.

Bryson out to prepare

Off to the practice range heads Bryson DeChambeau , as he waits to hear about what Xander Schauffele manages on the 18th.

A second major, a last-gasp defeat or a playoff... It's all possible from here.

More than anything, DeChambeau will be hoping to settle a bit after the adrenaline of his birdie on 18 moments ago.

Hovland's bogey ends streak

Hovland's bogey ends streak

Viktor Hovland went the entire weekend without a bogey, then took a six on the par-5 18th on Sunday.

As if the 16th at Oak Hill wasn't tough enough to stomach — leaving his approach in the fairway bunker in a one-on-one matchup versus Brooks Koepka — this will sit even worse.

Consider: He very well could've become only the third major champion over the last 30 years to go bogey-free over the final two rounds. Instead, it's more regret.

NFL's top 10 highest-paid QBs of 2024: Jared Goff No. 2 on list after deal; comparing records, playoff results

Are the best-compensated signal-callers really the best.

goff-g.jpg

Jared Goff just became a much richer man Monday after the Detroit Lions inked their quarterback to a mammoth contract extension . Goff agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract that includes $170 million guaranteed. This deal now has him as the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL only behind Bengals superstar Joe Burrow , who signed a record-setting $275 million deal last September.

Now that he's being paid like an elite quarterback in the league, Detroit is hoping Goff can be the steady hand under center that helps propel the franchise to new heights as it hunts for that elusive Super Bowl title. While Goff and the Lions are coming off a successful season in 2023, backing up the Brinks truck for a quarterback doesn't always produce Lombardi Trophies.

In fact, just one player inside the newly etched top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks in the league has hoisted a Lombardi Trophy -- Patrick Mahomes . Here's a rundown of the highest-paid signal-callers in the league and a comparative chart of how they stack up against one another on the field.

Note: APY denotes average per-year earnings (via Spotrac).

On top of Mahomes being the only quarterback within this top 10 to actually win a Super Bowl, just three others have been to the big game. That includes Goff, who was able to help bring the Los Angeles Rams to an appearance in Super Bowl LIII back in 2018. So, Goff has shown that he has the stuff to have Detroit knocking on the door of the Super Bowl.

Still, this list does signal that quarterbacks are arguably overcompensated if the name of the game is to win at a high level in the playoffs. Only Mahomes and Burrow have playoff records above .500, and six of the 10 have records below .500. In any event, if Goff can lead the Lions to their first-ever Super Bowl title, no one will blink twice when hearing he's the second-highest-paid quarterback in the league.

2024 PGA Championship: What was the total payout for Xander Schauffele, other top finishers?

tour of hongrie results

The 2024 PGA Championship had everything golf fans could want. Xander Schauffele birdied the final hole at Valhalla to secure his first-ever major, defeating Bryson DeChambeau , who shot a 7-under 64 in the final round to finish 20-under for the weekend. Yet, even that was not enough to secure the win.

We also saw incredible outings from golfers like Sahith Theegal — who might have fallen out of contention on Sunday, but was a still a major factor heading into the final round — and Robert MacIntyre , who only had one top-ten finish all year coming into the PGA Championship, yet managed to secure a tie for eighth place. Wow! What a weekend.

Now that everything is behind us now though, the question on everyone's mind is just how much Schauffele earned from this victory. In fact, what was the total payout for the golfers in attendance? Here's everything to know about the full prize pool for the 2024 PGA Championship.

2024 PGA Championship: Day after arrest, Scottie Scheffler struggles in third round of PGA Championship

What was the total prize pool for the 2024 PGA Championship?

The total winnings dished out for the 2024 PGA Championship was $18.5 million, $1 million more than the payout was for the 2023 PGA Championship.

What were Xander Schauffele's winnings?

Schauffele took home $3.3 million for winning the event, which is roughly 16% of the total prize money.

What were the payouts for each of the top-ten finishers?

  • 1st: $3,300,000
  • 2nd: $1,998,000
  • 3rd: $1,258,000
  • 4th: $888,000
  • 5th: $740,000
  • 6th: $660,580
  • 7th: $618,300
  • 8th: $577,790
  • 9th: $539,030
  • 10th: $502,040

Now an obvious question would be, "Well, four golfers tied for eighth place. How much does each of them take home?"

Good question. The answer is quite simple: Essentially, the four golfers (Scottie Scheffler, Robert MacIntyre, Justin Thomas, and Billy Horschel) will each take home the same amount, equal to the average payout for the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th place finishers. In this instance, each golfer won $521,417.50.

Any player that missed the cut, or failed to submit a 72-hole score was paid $4,000.

Nelly Korda Comes Up Clutch, Captures Sixth Victory of 2024 Season at Liberty National GC

Green has near-miss at mizuho americas open.

Nelly Korda

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — It’s no wonder that she’s the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1.

After a 2-over opening nine at Liberty National Golf Club, it looked like a sixth 2024 victory might be out of reach for Nelly Korda. But as she’s done so many other times this season, the now 14-time LPGA Tour winner dug deep and battled forward, outlasting Hannah Green by one shot to win her sixth title in her last seven starts at the Mizuho Americas Open.

Korda began the round with a two-shot lead over Green, but the Australian immediately picked up a shot on Korda, making a birdie on the par-4 1st hole to move to 12-under total, now one stroke back of the two-time major champion.

Korda then stumbled, bogeying the par-3 2nd hole to drop from 13-under to 12-under and sit in a tie with Green. Korda regained a one-shot advantage over Green with a birdie on the par-3 4th hole, tripping up with a bogey on the fifth hole to slip back to 12-under and to again be tied with Green.

While Green stayed steady, Korda made another mistake on the 7th hole, bogeying the par 4 to completely erase the two-shot lead she began the day with and dropping to 11-under, now one shot back of Green. But Green only held the solo lead for a short while, as the five-time LPGA Tour winner made bogey on the par-5 8th hole to open up a three-way tie for first at 11-under alongside Korda and Ayaka Furue, who shot 1-under on her front nine at Liberty National but ultimately faded after making three bogeys and a double bogey in her final seven holes.

The race to the finish remained in a deadlock, as Korda and Green matched pars on the ninth hole and birdies on the par-5 10th hole to share the lead at 12-under with eight holes to play and the rest of the field struggling to match their pace. Korda and Green then parred 11 and 12 before each grabbed another birdie on the par-5 13th hole to move to 13-under.

Both players parred the tricky par-3 14th hole and then birdied the par-4 15th hole to get to 14-under total with three holes to play. Korda and Green again matched pars on 16 and 17, and each came to the last needing a birdie to capture another 2024 victory.

On the 18th tee, Green had the honor, pulling her tee shot into the left rough, while Korda easily found the fairway. Playing her approach shot first, Green’s second landed in the rough just short of the left greenside bunker, leaving the Aussie a tricky pitch shot, one that she hit to roughly 15 feet, handing the advantage to Korda.

Korda’s birdie try nearly dropped, and she ultimately tapped in for par, putting the pressure on Green to make her putt to force a playoff. And when Green failed to convert, two-putting for a closing bogey, it was Korda for whom the crowds once again roared on the final green of an LPGA Tour tournament, as the 25-year-old emerged victoriously for the sixth time this season at the Mizuho Americas Open.

“Oh, my gosh, six, I can't even really gather myself right now with that, the head-to-head that Hannah (Green) and I had pretty much all day,” said Korda. “Wasn't my best stuff out there today but fought really hard on the back nine. It was just amazing to share the stage with Hannah. I consider her a pretty good friend out her, and it was a lot of fun going head-to-head against her.”

With the victory, Korda becomes the first player since Inbee Park in 2013 to win six times in a single season and is the first American to do so since Beth Daniel won seven titles in 1990. She becomes just the eighth player since 1980 to win six or more times in a year, joining Betsy King, Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Lorena Ochoa, Yani Tseng, Daniel and Park. Korda has also tied Sorenstam as the fastest player to win six times in an LPGA Tour season since 1980, doing so in her eighth 2024 start.

Korda earned five consecutive victories earlier this season at the LPGA Drive On Championship, the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, the Ford Championship presented by KCC, the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards and The Chevron Championship. Her winning streak was broken at last week’s Cognizant Founders Cup by Rose Zhang, who won the Mizuho Americas Open in 2023.
