Gaya has its mention in the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Sita, the companion of Lord Rama is deemed to have scourged the Phalgu River of which is a huge stretch of sand dunes. According to the legends, Sita had performed Pind Daan for Rama's father Dasharatha. The story begins with Rama arriving to Gaya along with his brother and consort Sita to carry out the holy rituals for his father, Dasharatha. While the Lord Rama and Lord Lakshman were taking a bath in the sacred water, Goddess Sita was having fun with the sand. Swiftly, Dasharatha emerged of the sand and asked her to perform the Pinda herself. She was asked to make balls of sand instead of waiting for their arrivals for grains. Eventually she offered the Pinda with five bystanders including the Falguni River, a Brahmin, a cow, the Akshaya Vatam and a Tulsi plant. When Rama came back with the ingredients, Goddess Sita narrated a whole story. However, Lord Rama didn't trust it. Thus Sita stood all her witnesses who saw the ritual happening in his absence. All of them took the side of Rama by saying a lie, while the Akshya Vatam acquainted with the reality. Seeing that, she cursed four of them by stating that a cow would never be paid homage from its front, Brahmins of Gaya would never be happy, they would always yearn for food, and no more Tulsi plants would be cultivated at Gaya. Pleased with Akshaya Vatam, she tendered the eternal blessings saying that who arrived at Gaya would do the Pinda daan at the Akshaya Vatam.

Places to Visit in Gaya

The historical place of Gaya is one of the most sacred destinations in the state of Bihar and is home to come of the most iconic and legendary temples and places of worship. The place is not only a significant religious destination for Hindus but is also holds importance in the lives of Jains and Buddhists as well. The place has found its mention in various Hindu religious books of Mahabharat and Ramayan as the place where ram accompanied with Lakshman and Sita had come to do the Pind Daan ritual for their father king Dashrath. Mahabodhi Temple

This UNESCO world heritage site is probably the most significant landmark of Gaya and is visited by devout Buddhists from India and across the globe as well. Literally translating into ‘the great awakening temple’ the temple marks the spot where lord Buddha had attained his enlightenment and is also home to the famous Bodhi Tree under which he had performed severe meditation for nirvana. The construction of this temple which has become a major pilgrimage site was built by Ashoka who was an avid Buddhist himself and wanted to spread the word of Buddhism all over the world.

How to Reach – 30 minutes of road journey from Gaya bus stand taking the Hario road and crosses Wat Thai Buddhabhumi.

Great Buddha Statue

This is one of the many different stops people make during their pilgrimage journey in India. The statue is named so since it is built at a staggering height of 64 feet. The Buddha is shown in a Dhyaan Mudra or the meditation pose on top of a lotus in open air. This intricate structure is built by using a mixture of sandstone blocks and red granite which took around 7 whole years to be completed with the help of 1200 masons. This is largest statue of India was opened for visit after its completion by his holiness 14 th Dalai Lama.

Thai Monastery

Built by Thai monarch in 1956 this is the only Thai temple in India which was done as a sign of strengthening relations between the 2 countries along with the aim of spreading the world of Buddhism. The sloping and curving roof of the monastery’s structure which is covered with golden tiles will make you feel like you are in Thailand. Greeting your inside the monastery will be a 25 metre high statue of Buddha with his hair neatly tied in a bun. Every nook and corner of the monastery from within is decorated with images and intricate carvings of Buddha in different forms.

Royal Bhutan Monastery

Built featuring the traditional Bhutanese architecture and adorned with intricate carvings in the interior of the life and times of Lord Buddha, this place is the epitome of peace and calm. Vishnupad Mandir

Located on the banks of the holy river of Falgu is the temple that houses the foot prints of Lord Vishnu. The marks are incised into a block of basalt and serves as the central imagery of worship to the visitors. This ancient temple has been visited by several iconic and legendary saints such as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Ramanujacharya, Ramakrishna etc. the historic and religious importance of the temple had been recognised long back and ever since then it had been visited by massive crowd of Hindu devotees and especially Vaishnavites across the globe.

How to Reach – Less than 20 minutes of road journey from Gaya bus stand

Barabar Caves

These caves are the oldest surviving rock cut caves in India which dates back to the time of the Mauryan empire rule in 322 – 185 BCE. In the olden days these caves were utilised by the ascetics belonging to the sect of Ajivika which was founded by Makkhali Gosala – a contemporary of Gautam Buddha and Mahavira. Sculptures present inside the caves show depictions of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Most of these caves consists of 2 chambers which are entirely carved out of granite and offers you a fun echo effect.

How to Reach – The caves are located on top of a hill. Visitors have to climb up. 1 hours 20 minutes from the Gaya bus stand.

Muchalinda Lake

Situated on the right side of Mahabodhi temple is the famous Muchalinda lake which is also referred to as the lotus pond. The lake is surrounded by peaceful beauty and allows the people to have a quiet time amidst the lush greenery along with a beautiful statue of lord buddha sitting in a meditating pose on top of a snake coil. The water in this pond is deemed to be very sacred and is home to a number of fishes who the visitors feed puffed rice. The legend associated with the pond is that it was here while Buddha was meditating, he was protected by the snake king from the sudden and harsh storm.

Mangala Gauri Temple

This holy temple has found its mention in various holy Hindu books like that of the puranas and other tantric works as well. The temple is one of the 18 Maha Shaktipeeths in India and its construction dates back to around 15 th century. The main deity who is worshipped inside is sati and is one of the most prominent pilgrimage destinations among the Vaishnavite community. It is a common belief here that if anyone worships the goddess with deep devotion then their prayers are answered. it is a simple temple built in a typical Hindu style with a small main shrine accompanied with a courtyard.

How to Reach – 15 minutes of road travel distance from Gaya bus stand

Timings – 6 am to 8 pm

Dungeshwari Cave Temples

This cave temple of Gautam Buddha is situated 12 kms away from the main city of Gaya amidst scenic and peaceful surroundings. It is believed that Buddha had meditated in these 3 caves before making his trip to Bodhgaya. Present inside the cave is 6 feet tall golden idol of Gautam Buddha in a meditative pose and is known as Sujata Sthan (the woman who had given Buddha food when he was starving and famished). This is one of must visit places if you are on an excursion of Gaya and it also makes for a good place to getaway from the fast paced city life.

How to Reach – 12 to 15 kms from Gaya can be covered by road in a cab, taxi, bus or autorickshaw.

Timings – 10 am to 5 pm

Koteshwarnath Temple

This holy temple is located right on the confluence of river Morha and Dargah and is dedicated to lord shiva. Initially referred to as the Shiv Nagar during the ancient times, it is said that the presiding Shiv Linga which is worshipped here was established during the Dwapar Yuga by Usha the daughter of king Banasur. A visit to this place has proven to fulfil all the wishes of a devotee who asks with a pure heart. The Saawan months sees a huge turnout of devotees looking to offer prayer. The temple is a very nice and peaceful place of worship especially if you are an ardent Shaivite.

How to Reach – well connected with roads from all sides of Bela Rampur, Tekari, Makhdumpur.

Vietnamese Temple

This is a very beautiful and peaceful place of worship within the heart of the city. The name of this place literally translates into ‘jewel house’ and holds immense importance to Buddhists since it is here where Buddha is said to have performed meditation while reflection on Patthana. It is here that various colours were emitted out of Buddha’s body which can now be seen on the Buddhist prayer flags. It is a very peaceful place where one can perform meditation and feel closer to the lord. There is a huge Buddha statue that will greet you on entering the premises which is a very beautiful and masterful work of art.

Burmese Monastery

Tucked away from the main centre chaos of the city, and following an offbeat beaten path the temple structure is very beautiful and is doused in a peaceful aura. If you like you can speak respectfully with one of the monks here and get to know about their culture and traditions. The entry for the monastery is located in very close proximity to the Mahabodhi temple complex which makes the whole environment here very spiritual and tranquil. Once you are done with your holy experience inside you can indulge in shopping for some artefacts, spiritual idols and memorabilia etc.

Archaeological Museum

Established in the year 1956 and located close to the iconic Mahabodhi temple and houses a massive collection of numerous Hindu, Buddhist relics, stone sculptures, images, miniature pots, terracotta artefacts, copper antimony rod etc. the entire place is divided into various galleries and some of the popular attractions here include are huge idols dedicated to lord buddha. There are also coins dating back to the Mughal era and monument structures belonging to the Gupta and Mauryan period which is kept on display for visitors. It gives you an insight into the life that it was in the bygone era.

Pretshila Hill

Located at a distance of just 8 km from the main city of Gaya is the Pretshila hill which can be translated into hill of ghost and is a very highly revered place especially for the pind daan ritual. On top of the hill is a temple dedicated to lord Yama – god of death – is situated. A tank present here called Ramkund is located where Lord Rama is believed to have taken a bath and taking a holy bath here is believed to wash away all the sins of the devotees visiting. 1. Mahabodhi Temple

Belonging to the 7th century, the temple was reconstructed in 1880 and has since had many facelifts. Though the main deity is Lord Buddha, the temple promotes tolerance towards other religions. The Chatras built at the top of Mahabodhi temple preach sovereignty of religion. Apart from followers of Buddhism, Hindu devotees too consider this site important to them, as they consider Buddha as the ninth incarnation of god Vishnu. A 9th century Shivalingam is also found in the temple.

2. Vishnupad Temple

Located on Falgu River banks, Vishnupad temple is considered to be constructed on Lord Vishnu’s footprints and hence the name. This ancient temple was reconstructed in the year 1787 by Indore’s queen Rani Ahilya Bai. The footprint is 40 cms in length. The huge temple complex displays images of various gods and goddesses. Temple for Lord Nrisimha is found in the courtyard of Vishnupad temple. A special feature of this temple is that its eastern side is dedicated to god Shiva.

3. Dungeshwari Cave Temples

Referred to as Mahakala caves, Dungeshwari Cave temples gain spiritual importance as Buddha spent many years here before he headed towards Gaya and enlightenment. 4. Barabar Caves

They proudly hold the top rank of being the most ancient surviving rock-cut caves in the land. Four caves comprise Barabar caves out of which the most fascinating caves are Lomas Rishi caves. Lomas Rishi caves are the oldest of all rock-cut caves as well and they influenced many to come in the following centuries. The Hindu sculptures and Jain sculptures found in the caves date back to 273 BC to 232 BC. The inscriptions on the walls depict the history and growth of Buddhism. The special feature of these caves is that their cuttings are so wonderfully sharp that they draw parallels to the laser cuttings of the present times. In short, Barabar caves not just delight but stun architecture minds.

5. Bodhi Tree

Bodhi Tree is considered sacred by followers of Buddhism as Buddha attained spiritual enlightenment here. The tree, which is situated on the southern side of Mahabodhi temple is not the where Buddha’s enlightenment occurred but it is the fifth generation of the original tree. Going by myth, Emperor Ashoka’s wife uprooted the original tree, as she was jealous about the devotion of her husband to Buddha. It is believed that after the tree was fell down on his wife’s order, he poured milk on the roots of the tree after which it revived. The tree was destroyed again in 600 AD and this time it was by King Sesaka. However, a sapling from the original tree was planted in 620 AD by King Purnavarma.

6. Chinese Temple And Monastery

Chinese temple is located near Mahabodhi temple. The temple is a pure influence of Chinese architecture. It was built by the government of China and Buddhist monks of China in the year 1945. 200-year-old Buddha statue found in the temple is said to be from China. The temple also houses three golden statues of Buddha. Chinese temple underwent renovation in the year 1997. The travelogues written by Chinese scholars who visited India during various periods give an insight into the culture of the past.

7. Bodhgaya Archaeological Museum

Established in the year 1956, Bodhgaya Archaeological Museum is home to several relics unearthed from this part of the world. Some of the rare collections include sculptures belonging to 1st century BC, antiques and images of Hindu deities and Buddha made of various metals including gold, silver and bronze.

8. Muchalinda Lake

Muchalinda Lake is considered a sacred place for followers of Buddhism. It is said that while Buddha was into the sixth week of meditation by the side of Muchalinda Lake, a severe storm struck. Muchalinda, the snake king protected Buddha who was deep in meditation. The temple found here houses the sculpture of Buddha and the snake in the act of protecting the god. 9. Thai Temple And Monastery

The only Thai temple to be located in India was built in the year 1956 by Thailand Monarch following the request from the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. I had a stay at Bharat Saba Asram in Gaya. Very poor system – I didn’t like it at all!

I am from Bangalore visiting Varanasi on 1-11 from there I am interested to see holy historical places in Gaya. So, please guide me as to how I can plan to see all these places in Gaya within one day since I will have to come back to Varanasi to catch train to Bangalore.

Gaya Sightseeing Tour Package

Gaya occupies a unique place among pilgrimage sites in India. It is perhaps unique because it is at once the pilgrimage site for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.

However, it is famously associated with Gautama Buddha, said to be where he attained enlightenment. However, Gaya predates Buddha and finds mention in the Purana, taking its name from the demon Gayasur who performed rigid penance and was blessed by Lord Vishnu. It is said the rocks surrounding Gaya are the body of Gayasur. Fortuitously or otherwise, Buddha is considered the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu and his carving is even represented in the step well at Patan dedicated to the 10 avatars of Vishnu.

Mahabodhi Temple, Chinese Temple, Bodhi Tree

These are three must visit places. The Mahabodhi temple is an architectural marvel and it is unique in that it is also visited by Hindus apart from Buddhists because the temple complex houses a 9th century Shiva Linga. The beauty of the carved and sculpted votive stupas inside the complex will amaze you. The Bodhi tree traces its lineage to the original tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment and is to the south of the Temple. In close proximity to the Mahabodhi temple you will find the Chinese Temple erected by Chinese monks using typical Chinese architectural style and design.

Vishnupad Temple

The temple is dedicated to the footprint of Lord Vishnu, whence the name. It is about 40 cms in Length and the complex also houses shrines to other deities, with that of Lord Shiva to be found in the eastern side. A dip in the neighboring Surya Kund is said to free you of all sins.

Barabar Caves and Dungeshwari Cave Temples

Tour of Gaya is incomplete if you do not take the trouble to visit Barabar Caves and the Dungeshwari Cave Temples. This is where the Buddha spent years in meditation before he headed towards Gaya. The Barabar Caves date back to 322BC or even earlier, said to have been used by Hindu, Jain and Buddhist Sadhus as can be testified by the presence of Jain and Hindu sculptures inside as well as Buddhist inscriptions. The carvings are simply fantastic.

Thai Monastery, Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple, Royal Bhutan Monastery

The King of Bhutan had this monastery constructed and it has an aura of peace and serenity. The Indosan Nippon Japanese temple about 15 km from the city is a marvel of Japanese art and has beautiful wood carving. The Thai Monastery has unique looks and it is famous for its large prayer hall. You will also find it of interest to visit the Tibetan Monastery. These temples give insights into how various countries have adapted Buddhism.

There are other places of interest to Muslims such as the Baitul Anwar, shrine of Hazrat Makhdoom Syed Shah Darwesh Ashraf and Jama Masjid located in and around Gaya.

It’s the end of an Eras Tour .

Taylor Swift was introducing “All Too Well” on stage in Liverpool on Thursday, June 13, with a speech about it being the 100th show on a tour she said, “has definitely been the most exhausting, all-encompassing but most joyful, most rewarding, most wonderful thing that has ever happened in my life” when she acknowledged that the tour would not go on forever.

"This is the very first time I’ve ever acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is gonna end in December ," she said.

"Like, that's it. And that feels like so far away from now. But then again, it feels like we just played our first show on this tour 'cause you have made it so much fun for us that we wanted to do 100 shows, 150-some shows that we have on the whole tour."

Taylor Swift launched The Eras Tour in Swift City, also known as Glendale

Swift launched the record-breaking Eras Tour with  a sold-out two-night stand at State Farm Stadium  in Glendale, Arizona, on Friday and Saturday, March 17-18, 2023, unveiling a staggering 44-song setlist in the course of a marathon set that ran more than three hours and still left fans wanting more.

The Eras Tour has become the highest-grossing tour of all time and the  first tour in history to generate more than $1 billion  in revenue.

There’s a concert film, naturally. Released in theaters worldwide on Oct. 13, 2023, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" quickly overtook a Justin Bieber movie to become the  highest-grossing concert film in history .

Following The Eras Tour launch, Swift immediately shot to  No. 1 on Pollstar's Artist Power Index chart , ending 2023 as  Time magazine’s perfectly obvious choice for Person of the Year .

"Swift’s accomplishments as an artist — culturally, critically and commercially — are so legion that to recount them seems almost beside the point," Time wrote.

Then, after running down a laundry list of those accomplishments while placing her alongside Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Madonna as a pop star, Time explained why she deserved the honor this year more than any other year.

"As a celebrity — who by dint of being a woman is scrutinized for everything from whom she dates to what she wears — she has long commanded constant attention and knows how to use it," Time wrote.

“But this year, something shifted. To discuss her movements felt like discussing politics or the weather — a language spoken so widely it needed no context. She became the main character of the world."

By that point,  USA TODAY had hired its own Taylor Swift reporter  and Swift had grabbed another first —  first billionaire in history with music as the main source of income .

She added an era (and new costumes) to the Eras Tour in Paris, working songs from "The Tortured Poets Department," a new album she somehow found time to record in the midst of the tour, into the setlist on opening night of another European leg in May 2024, removing "The Archer," "Long Live," "The 1," "The Last Great American Dynasty," "'Tis the Damn Season" and "Tolerate It" to make room.

Swift was feeling reflective in Liverpool as she talked about the record-breaking tour, which did 66 shows in 2023 and will hit 86 shows this year by the time it concludes with three shows in Vancouver, British Columbia.

"It's taken over everything. Like, I think I once had hobbies. But I don't know what they were anymore. 'Cause all I do when I'm not on stage is sit at home and try to think of clever acoustic song mashups and think about what you might want to hear. When I'm not on the stage, I'm dreaming about being back on the stage with you guys."

Then she thanked the fans for all they've done to make the tour a worldwide phenomenon.

"You have done so much to be with us, right?" she said.

"You've made plans so far in advance. You planned what you were going to wear. You memorized lyrics. You got yourselves here. You figured out parking. You figured out transportation, and I want to spend my hundredth show just thinking about that and living in this moment with you and being here with you.

"And just know that I appreciate every single ounce of effort that you've put into being with us when this show reaches triple digits in shows. So thank you!"

On Monday (June 3), the veteran pop star announced her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour , a 23-city North American trek that marks the singer’s first major run in more than a decade.

The Live Nation-produced jaunt is scheduled to launch Oct. 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal and wrap Dec. 5 at the United Center in Chicago. The tour will also visit major such major cities as New York, Boston, Nashville, Atlanta and Houston. See the full list of dates below.

Special guests on the trek will be revealed at a later date.

Lauper’s farewell tour announcement arrives alongside the release of her upcoming biopic , Let the Canary Sing , which debuts June 4 on Paramount+. The feature-length film, directed by Emmy-winning documentarian Alison Ellwood ( Laurel Canyon ), premiered at last year’s Tribeca Festival in New York.

Consider 2021 when the Milwaukee Bucks were pushing toward an NBA championship, and ESPN celebrity talker Stephen A. Smith referred to our home as a "terrible city."

We like to think The Brew City is a jewel of the upper Midwest, thanks to our lakefront location, our many festivals, our little-town feel in the context of a bigger city and ... our bars, of course. We recently profiled 100 objects that conjure Milwaukee.

After the 2021 comments — and noting that we didn't get to show off our city for the Democratic National Convention in 2020 — we put together this roundup of what's great about our hometown. It's especially relevant again now.

We have beer, obviously

You've probably heard the jokes about Wisconsin's proficient consumption of alcohol, but in Milwaukee, beer is part of the city's heritage as well.

Four giants of the beer world — Miller, Pabst, Schlitz and Blatz were still four of the 10 biggest breweries in the U.S. as late as 1950 — were based here, and many of the town's older buildings were once part of a brewery. It explains why you'll see a show at the Pabst Theater  (which wasn't a brewery but was built in 1895 by Captain Frederick Pabst, who also owned the brewery), drive down Miller Park Way (well, it's technically Brewers Boulevard now in most places ... it's complicated ) or even spend some time with nature at the Schlitz Adubon Center along the shoreline — land that was once a farm for brewery draft horses.

You might walk by a building and spy a hop leaf decoration on the building facade. Those were "tied houses," or taverns that were purchased by breweries to exclusively serve their beer. Tied House bar at Erie and Water Street was with Pabst, for example.

There are 39 breweries in metro Milwaukee (and many of them have tours!). The most Milwaukee of the craft breweries is no doubt Lakefront Brewery (1872 N. Commerce St.), a legacy brewery housed inside a former Milwaukee city building with lighting from the old Plankinton Hotel. The famous Miller brewery (4251 W. State St.) also maintains some of its old architecture and cobblestone roadways.

Drink outdoors in the sunshine at our many beer gardens in Milwaukee parks, tour breweries by boat or bike (seriously) with Milwaukee Pedal Tavern , and take in one of the many festivals if you find yourself in Milwaukee at other points in the summer.

When you drink, you've got to eat

Check out our list of the top restaurants , but these are the Milwaukee basics:

• Frozen custard. Just don't call it ice cream. Whether you're getting a scoop and a jumbo hamburger at legendary Kopp's Frozen Custard  or sticking to the more familiar Culver's brand that was born in Wisconsin, we've got a litany of delicious offerings. In 2021, the famous Leon's added a new flavor for the first time in 30 years! 
• Fish fry. It's a Friday staple in Wisconsin , and you can find options both in bars and more traditional restaurants. The aforementioned Lakefront Brewery provides one of the area's most famous.
• Old fashioned. Oh, we're back to drinks again. Although depending on the garnish, you could probably make a meal out of it. We love our brandy in Wisconsin, and if you belly up to the bar and order an old fashioned , you're going to get the best. 
• Foodies will love it here. You won't find many restaurant chains in downtown Milwaukee. It's a pretty diverse foodie scene, in fact. Some of the city's chefs and bakers have even competed on TV food competitions, including Adam Pawlak , owner of the Egg & Flour Pasta Bar locations and E&F Pizzeria;  Kimberly Hall , owner of Signature Sweets; and Dan Jacobs , co-owner of Dandan. You know Jacobs from his appearance on Top Chef: Wisconsin, which spent the last several weeks highlighting Wisconsin's culinary delights.

We're the city of festivals

We've got  Polish Fest ,  Bastille Days ,  Bronzeville Week ,  Festa Italiana ,  German Fest , Irish Fest ,  Mexican Fiesta ,  Milwaukee Dragon Boat Festival ,  Hunting Moon Pow Wow  and Asia Fest of Milwaukee . 

Then there's  Summerfest , billed as the world's largest music festival, which gets underway June 20. We've got SZA, Lil Uzi Vert, Tyler Childers, AJR, Kane Brown, Mötley Crüe, Maroon 5, Keith Urban, J.P., Lil Yachty, Brittany Howard and dozens more.

Honestly, you cannot form an opinion about Milwaukee until you sample Summerfest. Or the Saz's sample platter at Summerfest.

Three other brands we're proud of

• Harley-Davidson —  The motorcycle manufacturer's headquarters are actually across the street from the Miller brewery. William Harley and Arthur Davidson developed their first motor bicycle to navigate Milwaukee's hills in the early 1900s, and their company survived two world wars and a Great Depression and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003. There's even an entire Harley-Davidson Museum (400 W. Canal St.) dedicated to the brand's history. The every-so-often Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival will take place in July, welcoming the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jelly Roll, Hardy, The Offspring and more for some more big shows.
• Kohl's — One of the biggest department stores in the United States is headquartered in northwest Milwaukee. First started as a grocery chain in the 1920s, the Kohl Family opened its first department store in 1962 and developed into a powerhouse. Herb Kohl, the son of founder Maxwell Kohl and himself once part of the Kohl's ownership team, represented Wisconsin in the United States Senate from 1989 to 2013 and owned the Milwaukee Bucks from 1985 to 2014.
• Northwestern Mutual —  One of the newest structures on Milwaukee's skyline (the Northwestern Mutual Tower that opened in 2017) bears the name of this American financial services mutual organization, first founded in Janesville in 1857. At No. 110, it was the highest-ranked Milwaukee company on the Fortune 500 in 2024, with more than $33.5 billion in revenue.

Three other history nuggets you'll find interesting

• Socialism!  OK, maybe the Republicans won't love this one. Milwaukee had Socialist mayors for 38 years during the 20th century — including during the 1950s Red Scare when Frank Zeidler held office from 1948 to 1960. This is the birthplace of the term "sewer socialism" — first meant to ridicule socialists who bragged about a strong public works system (like sewers), then trumpeted proudly as an indicator of cleaning out corruption (and strong public works, for that matter).
• Thank us for that QWERTY keyboard you're using right now.  Newsman and politician Christopher Latham Sholes invented the typewriter here, patented in 1868. Milwaukeeans also invented Shrinky Dinks and, duh, the cheesehead hat. You're welcome.
• Fiserv Forum's address features a Civil Rights pioneer. Starting in 1967, protesters dismayed by discriminatory housing practices in Milwaukee insisted on stronger open housing laws in the city. They marched for 200 days, with Ald. Vel Phillips at the forefront of the movement. Today, the street on which Fiserv Forum resides is named for Phillips. Federal Judge Robert E. Tehan barred a referendum or a city law restricting open housing: "Considerable evidence has been presented which convinces the court that the holding of the referendum would do irreparable injury not only to the plaintiff and his class (African-American) but to the city as a whole." 

We love our sports (and our MVPs)

It's been a pretty great run for the two major pro sports franchises in Milwaukee, although let's be honest, the Green Bay Packers playing two hours north are still the No. 1 love for most of the city's sports fans.

But led by the 2019 and 2020 league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks won their first NBA championship since 1971. The native of Greece has signed multiple extensions to remain in Milwaukee, where he was the central figure in building an empire out of a struggling franchise. So Giannis likes Milwaukee, clearly.

Even in the smallest market for Major League Baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the winningest franchises of the past decade, led by MVP candidate William Contreras and 2019 MVP Christian Yelich.

That's not all we've got; the Milwaukee Wave indoor soccer team and Milwaukee Admirals pro hockey team affiliated with the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League both play in the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena just down the block from Fiserv Forum (where the Bucks play). The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers , a single-A affiliate of the Brewers, play a little less than two hours north in Appleton, just a little south of Green Bay. The Milwaukee Milkmen have a gorgeous field in Franklin and won last year's American Association of Professional Baseball title.

If you want to check out the beautiful lakefront and watch baseball at the same time, head north to Concordia University in Mequon, where the Lakeshore Chinooks compete in a summer wooden-bat baseball league for college kids in the Northwoods League. Speaking of that lakefront ...

Surely, you noticed the lake

That big blue body of water you might've seen in overhead shots of the city? That's Lake Michigan, with all the perks of an ocean — sand beaches, sailing, kayaking, even surfing — without the drawbacks: no salt, sharks, jellyfish, tides or hurricanes. If you've never seen a Great Lake in person, go down to the lakefront and take in the world's fifth-largest lake at Veterans Park, Bradford Beach or the paved Oak Leaf Trail. You'll be blown away by the views of scenic Atwater Park in Shorewood.

You won't be able to see Michigan on the other side — that's more than 80 miles away — but you could catch a killer sunrise if you visit early enough.

Milwaukee has a few rivers, too. The Milwaukee River is the longest, running north to south through downtown before meeting up with the Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers and turning east to dump into Lake Michigan. A three-mile RiverWalk runs alongside the Milwaukee River, from about North Humboldt Avenue to where it meets Lake Michigan in the Third Ward. The sidewalk system is ADA accessible and passes breweries, restaurants and bars, many with outdoor patios. 

Fonzie is a big deal, but so is our other art

The guy who may be Milwaukee’s favorite son — after Brewers radio broadcaster Bob Uecker — is actually a TV character.

The 1970s hit TV series “Happy Days” and its spinoff, “Laverne & Shirley,” were set in a sitcom version of Milwaukee in the 1950s and early 1960s. In both, Henry Winkler played Fonzie, a leather-jacketed tough guy with a dozen catchphrases (“heeyyyyyyy!”) and a heart of gold. Visit Milwaukee commissioned a statue to pay tribute to the Fonz; Winkler and others from the show came to Milwaukee for the dedication in 2008. Living on Milwaukee’s downtown RiverWalk, the Bronze Fonz has been a tourist attraction ever since.

OK, yes, we acknowledge that's kitschy. It's no museum of modern art or Central Park. You've got to enjoy the small-town randomness for a city with a fancy riverwalk within its skyline.

We've got lots of public art. Every summer since 2017, Sculpture Milwaukee has installed artwork around the city, such as Paula Crown's "JOKESTER" a giant, crushed red Solo cup in the Third Ward; "Gild the Lily (Caribbean Hybrid I, II, III)," the tropical flowers on the Chase Bank lobby; and a Robert Indiana "LOVE" sculpture, which can be found behind the Milwaukee Art Museum. 

For some of the city's art, you have to dig a little deeper, like Black Cat Alley, an installation of murals, many by local artists, in the alley between East Kenilworth Place and East Ivanhoe Place. 

In 2020, murals — including ones honoring medical workers, the late George Floyd and voting rights —  changed the face  of the city.

Do we have problems here? Of course

Milwaukee has long been combating racial inequality , animosity between residents and police , violence  and questions of public health .

We're paying attention to it and trying to find solutions.

Sherman Phoenix serves as a hub for Black entrepreneurs. The Bronzeville Collective is a major recent success story along those lines.

Also, yes, we have snow. So much snow. We ... have to try really hard to appreciate that detail, but it's summer, baby! Nobody's thinking about January!

10 things you can do in Milwaukee that you can't do anywhere else

• See the underground caves where beer was stored at Miller brewery. 
• See the oldest known Harley-Davidson motorcycle in existence (and sit on a bunch of others) at the Harley-Davidson Museum.
• Visit the one-of-a-kind Black Holocaust Museum .
• Watch the Famous Racing Sausages compete in the sixth inning of a Brewers game at American Family Field, or watch Bernie Brewer navigate down his giant slide after a home run.
• Meet a 100-year old South American River Turtle named Onassis at the Milwaukee County Zoo, which also happens to be the only place to stand face-to-face with elephants anywhere in the upper Midwest (you have to hoof it to St. Louis for the next-closest elephants).
• Sing the "Laverne & Shirley" theme song on the Lakefront Brewery tour.
• View the largest cluster of work from acclaimed architect Frank Lloyd Wright on the "Burnham Block," constructed for working-class residents.
• Make a fool of yourself if you don't know the password to gain entry into spy-themed restaurant SafeHouse  (779 N. Front St.), but maybe you make friends with a Milwaukeean who knows the magic word? Those who don't know it will have to participate in some silly calisthenics ... for all to see, as it's broadcast on TVs to the bar inside.
• Watch the wings open (at 10 a.m.) or close (at 10 p.m.) on the Calatrava sculpture at the Milwaukee art museum.
