Philly on Foot

Year after year, Philadelphia is rated as one of the best walking cities in the country. And it’s no wonder why – the city layout is simple to master and our neighborhood streets are filled with fun and diverse shops, restaurants, museums, parks and people.

The compact Center City boasts founder William Penn’s easy-to-follow grid street design. It spans just 25 blocks between two rivers: the Schuylkill and the Delaware. In between, the north/south streets are numbered and the east/west streets have tree names (e.g., Walnut, Spruce, Pine).

Walk from City Hall to the Liberty Bell in just 15 minutes

In addition, Philadelphia’s five original public squares — Franklin, Washington, Rittenhouse, Logan and Centre (now City Hall) — are conveniently spread out, serving as perfect rest stops during a long day out. Curb cut-outs make the city stroller and wheelchair accessible.

Colorful “Walk! Philadelphia” directional signs can be found throughout the downtown area to help visitors navigate even more easily. Center City District, the organization responsible for the award-winning signage, also populates the streets with uniformed community service representatives (CSRs) who act as strolling concierges and goodwill ambassadors. CSRs answer questions, give directions, administer first aid and stay in radio contact with Philadelphia police to promote public safety.

And when the feet get tired, there are plenty of options for getting around town — some practical, some just plain fun.

Philly By Bike

Philadelphia has become one of the most bike-friendly big cities in the country with dedicated bike lanes on city streets, hundreds of miles of trails and a growing number of bicycle commuters.

  • 440+ miles of dedicated bike lanes
  • 750 miles of bike trails in the works with 300+ miles completed so far
  • 1,300+ bikes that can be rented at more than 140 stations across the city

Philly is more bike-friendly than ever with Indego, a city-wide bike sharing service that offers rentals starting at just $4 per ride.

Launched in 2015 with 1,000 bikes and 100 stations, Indego continues to expand its program, adding more than 40 new stations and 300 additional bikes over the last two years. Stations are located throughout the city, from the Delaware River across the Schuylkill River into West Philadelphia and University City, and from South Philadelphia to North Philadelphia, including on Temple University’s main campus.

Cyclists can walk up to any Indego station and check out bikes for trips around the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week (riders are encouraged to follow the rules of the road and to always wear a helmet). Using a touchscreen kiosk, bikes are released from their docks when payment is made with a credit card or a pre-paid Indego Key. This quick and convenient system also allows bikers to return rentals to the nearest station after their ride is complete.

Indego is an initiative of the City of Philadelphia and is sponsored by Independence Blue Cross.

A giant pink bus is hosting tea parties while giving tours of Philly

The sightseeing experience adds a fancy twist with finger sandwiches and floral decor..

Franki Rudnesky

A tea party on wheels is now rolling through Philadelphia.

Tourists and residents alike can sip tea and snack on finger sandwiches while admiring quintessential Philadelphia sites thanks to a giant pink tour bus that recently rolled into town.

Tea Around Town, an experience run by New York City-based TopView Sightseeing, launched Philly tours last month. The tea party on wheels serves hot beverages and fancy snacks while traveling past local landmarks such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Philadelphia Museum of Art.

"The response from Philly-area people who have ridden the bus has been simply amazing," said John Cella, of TopView Sightseeing. "We've received tremendous interest and support from both the local community and tourists, which has been incredibly rewarding. It's been wonderful to see guests of all ages and backgrounds excited to join our experience, truly embodying the inclusive spirit of Tea Around Town."

The bus' interior is decorated in florals and outfitted with booths for riders to sit in while enjoying the fare. Tea blends range from classics like English breakfast and Earl Grey to unique seasonal blends like mixed berry hibiscus and raspberry pomegranate. Sweet and savory treats served on board include salted caramel cheesecake, mini lemon meringue, savory ribeye symphony and lobster pot puff.

Entertainment will also be offered during the tours  in the form of live music and storytelling,  creating what Cella calls a "lively and welcoming" atmosphere.

Passengers aboard the Tea Around Town bus can snack on scones and sweets while sipping tea.

Tickets for the limited-seating tours, which are available for people ages 3 and older, can be purchased online . Admission starts at $80 for the Petite package, which includes food, "sky deck seating" with 360-degree views, a private table and souvenir tea tumbler. Riders who are feeling fancy can upgrade to the Luxe experience, starting at $120, which offers everything from the Petite experience plus priority boarding and extra menu items.

"Tea Around Town is perfect for celebrating special occasions like birthdays or bridal showers," Cella said. "You can charter a private event or simply purchase tickets with friends to enjoy a memorable experience together."

Each trip is approximately 90 minutes long and departs from a meeting point in front of 616 Market St., at the southwest corner of Market Street and South 6th Street. Passengers are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time to allow time for boarding.

Tea Around Town is running a Mother's Day discount through Sunday, offering up to 14% off tickets.

New bus service from AVP to Philadelphia allows travelers to skip security lines at PHL

A ir travelers leaving from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport ( AVP ) on American Airlines can soon connect through Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) by motorcoach.

Beginning August 6,  buses will operate four times a day in each direction between AVP and Philly.

The new service allows passengers to clear security at AVP and board a motorcoach to Philadelphia's Terminal F. Travelers will not have to clear security again and can walk to their gate.

American Airlines and The Landline Company are operating the service. The two companies run the same service from Allentown to Philadelphia.

Bags are handled in the same way as any flight: passengers check their luggage with American Airlines on arrival, and the airport's baggage handling system handles it from there.

By Andrew Adeolu , Tara Lynch , Adam Thompson

Updated on: May 7, 2024 / 6:17 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE – A Philadelphia woman died and multiple people were injured when a party bus crashed into a guardrail Sunday morning on I-95 in Harford County.

Maryland State Police said 24 people were on the bus around 6 a.m. when it lost control and crashed near mile marker 77 along the northbound lanes.

Troopers said 30-year-old Alexis Nicole Kegler, from Philadelphia, died at the scene and 23 were taken to hospitals, according to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.

According to a post by the volunteer fire company on X, formerly known as Twitter, the bus belonged to Just Becuz Entertainment, which is based in Philadelphia. The company's website says it provides transportation from Philadelphia to New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

I-95 northbound in Harford County is back open after it was closed for several hours.

At this time, officials say no charges have been filed.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Harford County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police Crash Team are investigating this crash.

WB/Scranton International Airport announces new bus service to Philly

May 14—AVOCA — The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport on Tuesday announced a new service, but it will not be taking flight.

That's because it was not an announcement about a new air service — something the airport has done frequently in recent months — but rather a new luxury bus service for travelers flying out of Philadelphia.

Effective Aug. 6, a new bus service — called "tarmac to tarmac" — linking the airport with Philadelphia International Airport will be operated by luxury motor-coaches as part of American Airlines' partnership with The Landline Company.

Nick Johnson, vice president/head of revenue for The Landline Company, said American is launching the service with four round-trips per day, timed to connect with American flights out of PHL.

To use the service, customers will book their flight through American Airlines' website or mobile app, entering AVP as origin and selecting the destination (i.e. MIA) as the endpoint, just like a flight itinerary.

"Many passengers choose AVP for the convenience and low-stress environment," said Carl R. Beardsley Jr., AVP's executive director. "Being able to start your trip from AVP and connect through Philadelphia alleviates some of the stress when starting your travel from a larger airport."

Beardsley said the service will operate four times daily in each direction, providing customers with a convenient way to start and end their travels.

Johnson said the service will have many of the features customers would expect from the first-class cabin of a regional jet, including in-seat power, WiFi, plentiful legroom and leather seats.

Beardsley said Wilkes-Barre/Scranton customers connecting on American Airlines via PHL can clear security at AVP.

American and Landline take customers directly to the tarmac of the "F" Concourse in PHL, allowing for easy, behind security connections to American's global PHL network.

Here are the highlights:

—American Airlines is launching a new "tarmac-to-tarmac" luxury motor-coach service to its hub in PHL.

—The new service allows passengers to clear security at AVP, board a luxury motor-coach at one of AVP's departure gates, and arrive at a secure gate at PHL's Terminal F. Customers will then disembark at the gate (without having to re-clear security), and walk to their next gate to continue their connecting flight.

—These luxury motor-coaches feature 35 premium leather seats in a 2 by 1 seating configuration and offer 36 inches of seat pitch, comparable to the premium cabin on a regional jet. Passengers also enjoy free WiFi and in-seat power at every seat. Additionally, customers can earn and redeem AAdvantage miles using these new connecting Landline "flights."

—Bags are handled as with any flight — passengers check their luggage in with American Airlines on arrival, and the airport's baggage handling system takes over from there. Check-in also works like any other American Airlines flight.

"We are pleased to expand our innovative partnership with Landline to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport," said Joe Sottile, American Airlines director of domestic network planning.

Michael Sharer, Landline's northeast operations lead, said the service will allow American Airlines passengers to clear security at their local airport, closer to home, and connect through Philadelphia post security.

"This service will provide a seamless, premium motor-coach connection to passengers with flights out of Philadelphia," Sharer said.

Travelers arriving back in PHL will continue to board the luxury motor-coach air-side and arrive nonstop directly at AVP. Checked baggage will be directly transferred between the motor-coaches and aircraft.

AVP currently offers travelers approximately 20 daily arrivals and departures, which includes non-stop flights to multiple destinations, with one-stop service to hundreds of destinations worldwide.

AVP and their airline partners have added five additional destinations so far in 2024.
