How Much do Pro Cyclists Make?

The world of cycling sees a wide gulf between how much pro cyclists earn and the many many cyclists scraping by at the bottom of the Continental level. Compared to other sports though – like football – cyclists actually still earn relatively ‘normal’ incomes through their sport.

Table of Contents

In this article, I’m going to attempt to show some of the known figures for riders across different levels of men’s cycling and the difference in money between men’s and women’s cycling.

2020 saw some changes in pro cycling. The men’s WorldTour stayed the same but the Pro Continental level was renamed the Pro Series. The Women’s WorldTour meant something slightly different and there was a women’s Pro Series level of races too for the first time. However, no Pro Continental level for women’s teams.

As this post was first written in 2019, the terms used are to reflect the naming conventions of that year.

Chris Froome Tour of Britain 2018

Which pro cyclists earn the most?

Now, this isn’t a definitive list. Just like in the real world, not everyone likes to tell people what they earn. As such it’s a list of only the numbers I could actually find and even those may require being taken with a pinch of salt. There are some big names missing from this list like Julian Alaphilippe who signed a new contract at Deceuninck-Quickstep in June 2019 after his excellent Tour de France . But it should give an idea of a professional cyclist salary.

Tadej Pogačar’s net worth is unknown but in 2021 he confirmed what is reputedly the highest paid contract in pro cycling at the moment. It was also one of the longest at 6 years but this has been matched by Juan Ayuso in 2022, although not with Pogačar’s net worth.

Prize Money and other incomes

What this table also doesn’t include is the extra money that pro cyclists earn through prize money. I covered all of the teams’ and riders’ prize money from the 2019 Tour de France , which showed just how big the payoffs are for winning. It also showed the little money some riders get to supplement their wages after 3 weeks of hard racing.

The prize money for races varies massively. The total prize pot for the men’s Amstel Gold in 2019 was €40k and just €10k for the women’s race . Some races are bucking this trend and offering equal prize money, such as the Tour de Yorkshire . It’s important to note that all of the salaries listed here do not include prize money winnings or endorsements.

Appearance money is another source of income and is rarely openly discussed. Allegedly, Chris Froome received €2 million just to take part in the 2018 Giro d’Italia for instance.

At the end of 2017, it was reported that half of the women’s peloton was earning under €10,000 a year. 17% were earning nothing at all and a touch over 50% also had second jobs to supplement their racing career. At the same point in time, just 11% of women’s riders were earning more than €34,000. An amount that’s comparable to the minimum wage in men’s cycling.

How much do professional cyclists make?

So we’ve seen what the star riders earn, what is a regular pro cyclist salary?

Well, the average pro cyclist salary for a WorldTour domestique is between €100,000 and €400,000. You’re looking at the likes of Tim Declercq and Julian Vermote in this category ( although Vermote’s stock has fallen a bit as of 2021 ). The guys who don’t necessarily get the glory themselves yet put in a tonne of work to benefit the team. Georg Preidler was reportedly on €170,000 for FDJ during 2017-2018. Tadej Pogacar’s first contract with Team UAE Emirates was supposedly for €70,000 before being quickly redrawn after winning the Tour of the Algarve in his first season.

A super-domestique type rider can earn anywhere between the high-end of that range and the bottom of the table above. Geraint Thomas salary was reported to be €1-1.5 million in 2018, then he won the Tour de France and now finds himself earning €3 million.

Pro cyclist salary – minimum wages

At certain levels in the sport of cycling a minimum wage structure appears but below that level riders will potentially be on much less money to race. In 2019, the UCI minimum wage for men’s Pro-Continental level cyclists was €30,855. For the WorldTour, that number is €40,045.

There’s been some reasonable progression in these minimum wages since 2013. Back then a Pro-Continental cyclist would get at least €30,250 and a UCI WorldTour minimum salary for a rider was at least €36,000. For 2018, the current Pro-Continental UCI minimum wage of €30,855 was introduced and WorldTour riders were now able to get at least €38,115.

Neo-pros at both levels get slightly less. these were set at €25,300 for Pro-Continental neo-pros and €29,370 for WorldTour level neo-pros in 2013. These increased in 2018 to €25,806 at Pro-Conti level and €30,893 for WorldTour level riders. The current numbers are €26,322 and €31,609.

There’s no minimum pro cyclist salary for those racing at Continental level, so some will be receiving an income but plenty won’t be. I wouldn’t expect their salaries to be higher than the neo-pro rates except maybe for high profile riders at that level like a Davide Rebellin or Adam Blythe – even then probably not by much. It’s often thought that 2.2/1.2 races aren’t considered as professional races, so you’ll often hear of a rider taking their first pro win at a higher level.

average european tour salary

For women, the situation is closer to that of the Continental riders than any other level. Up until now, there has been no minimum wage at all for women cyclists. 2020 will be the first season with a minimum wage, but only for women on the 8 WorldTour teams . For 2020, it will start at €15,000, with plans to then increase it gradually over the next three years.

If things go to plan, the minimum wage will rise to €20,000 in 2021, to €27,500 in 2022 and become equal to Pro Continental men’s teams by 2023. The number of women’s WorldTour teams should also have grown by then too. Now that Boels-Dolmans have confirmed sponsorship until 2023, they should be able to jump to WorldTour status from 2021. There is no official neo-pro status for women but this is also aiming to be introduced in 2023. Full details from the UCI here . One suggested salary for Annemiek van Vleuten at Movistar is €250k a year. I’ve also seen a salary for Marianne Vos whilst at her peak at Rabo-Liv of €400k.

Ever wondered how much you’d earn if you won the Tour de France twice before you turned 23?

Six million euros ($6.6 million) a year, that’s how much.

At least, that’s what a report published this weekend by sports finance outlet Calcio e Finanza suggests Tadej Pogačar is earning in 2022.

The Calcio e Finanza study shows the top 20 salaries for male pro cyclists in 2022. Although the numbers are best-guess calculations rather than confirmed team paychecks – and some of the data is likely based on 2021 salaries – the list gives an interesting flavor of what’s going on in the big business of pro cycling.

Before we dive into some of the interesting details, here’s the list:

Top-20 wages, per Calcio e Finanza

  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates): €6.0 million
  • Chris Froome (Israel Start-Up Nation): €5.5 million
  • Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies): €5.5 million
  • Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers): €3.5 million
  • Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.8 million
  • Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.5 million
  • Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl): €2.3 million
  • Alejandro Valverde (Movistar): €2.2 million
  • Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.2 million
  • Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma): €2.2 million
  • Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Qazaqstan): €2.1 million
  • Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma): €2.0 million
  • Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix): €2.0 million
  • Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.0 million
  • Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ): €2.0 million
  • Romain Bardet (Team DSM): €2.0 million
  • Jakob Fuglsang (Israel-Premier Tech): €2.0 million
  • Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers): €1.9 million
  • Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic): €1.9 million
  • Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates): €1.8 million

Some takeaways:

Ineos grenadiers still boasts bumper bank balance.

average european tour salary

The results may have slowed down slightly for Ineos Grenadiers, but the funding sure hasn’t.

According to Calcio e Finanza , the British super-squad has four of the top 10 earners in 2022, and six of the full 20. Geraint Thomas, Egan Bernal, Michał Kwiatkowski, and Richard Carapaz all sit in the top nine, costing Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos outfit some €11.0 million ($12.2 million) in total.

The Team Sky/Ineos squad has long been known to dish out the most lucrative dollars, and Chris Froome was a regular at the top of salary scales throughout the past decade.

The sponsor shift to chemicals giant Ineos in 2019 hasn’t changed that. The Ratcliffe-led multi-national is believed to be the fourth largest of its kind with its $61 billion turnover, and has stakes in sports from sailing to soccer. It’s got money to burn and a logo to sell.

Although Thomas is believed to earn below what is reported above, his salary will still be suitably seismic, and paypackets will be weighty through the Ineos roster. It would be fascinating to see what the team pays its youngest rising stars, but you can bet it will be a lot more than that of its rivals.

Big scores means big salary for Tadej Pogačar

Pogačar will skip the Vuelta to focus on the fall classics

If you want to keep the next Eddy Merckx wearing your jersey, you gotta pay for it.

UAE Emirates is giving Tadej Pogačar €6 million per season to keep the 23-year-old sensation on the books. Extrapolate that out over the remaining six years of his contract and the total is staggering. Yep, Pogačar’s near-future is currently valued at a cool €36 million ($40 million).

With two Tours de France titles and two monument victories already under his very slim belt, Pogačar is no doubt the dominant rider of the era.

But more importantly for both him and his UAE Team Emirates squad, he should have at least 10 years left in his legs. That’s a whole lot of talent and a veritable pipeline of future results. Whether it justifies the eye-watering wages paid by mega-rich Emirati tycoons is up for debate.

Past results trump future success

average european tour salary

A quick glance at the top four in the report shows that it’s not always what you might do in the future — but what you’ve done in the past — that counts.

Stuttering stars of past seasons Chris Froome, Peter Sagan, and Geraint Thomas are next in line behind Tadej Pogačar in terms of top salaries, but certainly not in terms of sure-fire future success.

Although Thomas and Sagan could still surprise, the duo is far from anyone’s eyesight in 2022.

Sagan was bettered by upcoming teammate Antony Turgis at Milan-San Remo, and Thomas may not even be selected for this year’s Tour, despite winning it in 2018.

And Froome? With his 37th birthday on the horizon and ongoing questions about his competitiveness, no one is betting on him hitting a podium any time soon.

But what Froome, Sagan and Thomas lack in recent results, they make up for in bringing a team prestige, expertise and future funding. Those things aren’t results, but they count.

Small teams have to spend big

average european tour salary

Second-tier teams may not have the biggest budgets, but they still have to muscle up with WorldTour superpowers to stay competitive.

Peter Sagan’s salary at the second-division TotalEnergies is an outlier given the team’s radical reinvention at the turn of the season. However, the ProTeam squads Alpecin-Fenix and Arkéa-Samsic also make the list, with Mathieu van der Poel and Nairo Quintana earning 13th and 19th most respectively.

That Alpecin-Fenix and Arkéa-Samsic can stretch to €2.0 million for “MvdP” and “Nairoman” points to the self-perpetuating system of pro cycling.

The teams’ top ranking in the ProTeam division means they reap the benefits of being automatically invited to the world’s biggest races. In turn, that means they can pay their two biggest stars sufficient to keep them generating the results needed to top the points tables.

The unknown numbers behind personal sponsors

average european tour salary

Calcio e Finanza states its list is based on salaries, but it’s not clear whether personal sponsors are included. And those outside-the-team deals can stack up fast.

Mark Cavendish, one of the biggest cycling names of the century, doesn’t make the list published this weekend. However, it’s well-known that his sprint successes at Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl are funded by his own personal backers. Who the contributing partners are is unknown, but the Manxman has a host of past and future partners, ranging from luxury watch brand Richard Mille to Nike shoes, Specialized bikes and much more.

Likewise, Sagan has a huge host of collaborations, including at 10-year tie-in with Sportful, and Froome has his fingers in a range of blossoming tech brands.

Riders like Cavendish, Sagan and Froome can afford their Monaco mansions thanks to their multiple revenue streams. Accounting for those lucrative extra partnerships could change Calcio e Finanza’s countdown significantly.

Cycling is still small-fry

average european tour salary

Pro cycling’s top salaries are staggering and are likely to continue increasing. But they’re pocket-money compared to some of the world’s wealthiest sports.

Soccer superstar Lionel Messi is reported to be earning $130 million in 2022 at his Paris Saint-Germain team, with up to $100 million from salaries and bonuses and the remainder from endorsements.

Meanwhile, top Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are believed to be banking $40 million and $25 million, respectively, this racing season.

The NBA’s Stephen Curry is on $45 million per season, while the entire team budget for the New York Mets in baseball is close to $250 million per season.

Tadej Pogačar will need to win a lot more yellow jerseys to match those numbers.

Payday in Dubai

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2021 DP World Tour Championship

1290018310

Ross Kinnaird

Collin Morikawa had a good grip on the Race to Dubai title coming into the DP World Tour Championship, regardless of his play over the weekend in Dubai. And yet, the 24-year-old American didn’t want to hear anything of it, instead focusing on winning the tournament proper, which as he said would take care of everything else.

Come Sunday at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, Morikawa did just that, posting a bogey-free six-under 66—propelled by five birdies on the back nine—to win the title in the European Tour season finale by three shots. In the process, he made history by becoming the first U.S. player ever to win the tour’s season-long points title.

To the winner goes the spoils. The RtD title comes with a $1 million bonus for Morikawa. But the tournament win was even more lucrative. The overall purse for this Rolex Series event in Dubai was $9 million with the winner claiming a $3 million prize money payout.

Below are the prize money payouts (in Euros) for each player in the field as they conclude the 2020-21 European Tour season.

European tour offers boost in prize money, new minimum pay

  • Associated Press

The European tour will offer $150,000 against players' earnings and pay $1,500 to other players if they miss the cut as part of a new schedule announced Thursday that boosts prize money and returns to Australia and parts of Asia.

The tour said prize money would be $144.2 million, not including the four majors and the World Golf Championship in Texas.

The four Rolex Series events -- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, the Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship -- get $1 million increases to $9 million, with the season-ending DP World Tour Championship having a $10 million purse.

The tour also said $6 million from a bonus pool would be distributed among the leading eight players in the DP World Tour rankings at the end of the year.

The changes reflect alliances Europe has established with the PGA Tour and tours in South Africa and Australia amid new competition from Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

Most significant is an "Earnings Assurance Program" that provides $150,000 to full members that count against tournament earnings. It is similar to what the PGA Tour announced for this season, with a few changes.

The U.S. tour is offering $500,000 up front for rookies and players who earned their card back from the Korn Ferry Tour. Everyone else will be paid the difference if they don't earn $500,000 in the season.

The European tour is offering $20,000 at the start of the season for rookies, Challenge Tour graduates and those who make it through qualifying school. Everyone else will get paid the difference if the don't earn $150,000 at the end of the season.

"For us to be able to offer our members record prize funds and enhanced earning opportunities is massive, particularly when global economies are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and with the new challenge of rising inflation significantly putting pressure on costs in all facets of our business," said Keith Pelley, the chief executive of the European tour.

He said the overall prize fund is some $50 million more than two years ago.

The new season begins Nov. 24-27 -- one week after the current season ends -- with consecutive weeks of co-sanctioned events in South Africa and Australia. The Australian PGA Championship is the same week as the Joburg Open, while the Australian Open is the same week as the South African Open.

It will be the first time the Australian Open is co-sanctioned by Europe, while the Australian PGA was on the European schedule from 2015 through 2019. Neither event has been held since 2019 because of the pandemic.

Also new to the European tour -- officially the DP World Tour because of its umbrella sponsorship -- are tournaments in Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Korea.

That puts the 39 tournaments in 26 countries on five continents.

The new year starts with the Hero Cup, patterned after the former Seve Trophy to give European tour members a taste of the Ryder Cup format.

The Italian Open will be May 4-7, significant because it is at Marco Simone outside Rome, which hosts the Ryder Cup at the end of September. It's the same week as the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour, an elevated event worth $20 million, which would make it difficult for Americans -- along with American-based Europeans -- to play.

Missing from the schedule is a Spanish stop at Valderrama, which is likely to be used by LIV Golf next year.

The European tour also has a three-week break after the British Open, a break Pelley said was sought by players.

Ryder Cup qualifying ends Sept. 3 at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. After that, players have the Irish Open, BMW PGA Championship, the French Open and then the Ryder Cup.

How Much Do Pro Golfers Earn?

In this piece we compare how much golfers earn compared to athletes from other sports.

How Much Do Pro Golfers Earn

Golf is unlike a lot of other sports in that there is no base salary that competitors receive.

Instead it is much like tennis in that the amount earned is entirely predicated on performance and success.

However, once that success if found, endorsement and sponsorship deals can be huge.

For example a player like Rory McIlroy is one of the most marketable players in the world and is currently the World Number One, which therefore makes him the perfect package for sponsors.

McIlroy earned over $23m on the PGA Tour in 2019 and is reported to earn $10m per year from his TaylorMade contract and another $10m per year from Nike.

He also has lucrative deals with Omega, Golf Pass and Optum.

Of course it is difficult to predict exactly how much golfers earn because their bank statements and tax returns are not common knowledge, however what we can look at are the purses at golf tournaments to give a clearer idea on player earnings.

The PGA Tour is the biggest golf tour in the word and has huge prize funds as a result.

Winners each week usually win over $1 million, and having good results usually gets players into bigger tournaments like the Majors, all which have huge prize funds as you can see below.

2020 Major Winner's Cheque

Masters - $2,070,000

PGA Championship - $1,980,000

US Open - $2,250,000

The Open - $1,935,000

Another aspect you can add to this in terms of the PGA Tour is bonus incentives like the Wyndham Rewards and FedEx Cup.

Brooks Koepka wrapped up the first Wyndham Rewards Bonus in 2019 with a win at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. For the tournament win he secured $1,745,000 and also an extra $2 million for topping the Wyndham standings.

average european tour salary

In terms of the FedEx Cup, if a player is sitting atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of the Tour Championship they now collect an extra $15 million.

The European Tour does struggle to compete with this however there are still many tournaments that take place with prize funds over $7 million such as the Rolex Series events.

Indeed the season-ending DP World Tour Championship hosted in Dubai had the biggest first prize cheque in golf last year with the winner taking home $3 million.

average european tour salary

Additionally the European Tour has a season long competition called the Race to Dubai which pays $5 million out to the top-5 finishers in the overall standings.

So the clear idea here is that golfers can earn a lot of money provided they are successful. That is a crucial caveat because if not it can be hard for professional golfers, especially if a player has to spend lots of money on flights, hotels, living costs and other things to get to an event, only to miss the cut and not many any money.

For example, Michael Kim played in 26 events last season and earned just over $100,000 which put him 217th on the official money standings. To you and me that sounds like a lot of money but as a professional golfer that does not go that far considering travel, hotel and caddie costs in particular.

Women's Golf

This gets even tougher for female golfers.

For the 2019 season, 112 PGA Tour players made over $1 million whereas on the LPGA just 14 did.

This discrepancy gets even more pronounced when comparing to the Ladies European Tour.

That being said the top end of players in women's golf are earning in the millions too so once again success is the crucial factor in all avenues of golf.

How does golf compare to other sports?

Yes successful golfers get paid well but how do they compare to other sports like tennis, another sport entirely predicated on your own success?

Well, in 2019 the US Open became the most lucrative tennis event ever offering a $57 million purse with the singles winners in both men's and women's draws getting nearly $4 million each. The runners-up got nearly $2 million each as well!

On the ATP, players regularly compete for big prize funds dependent on the size of the tournament, with the ATP Masters 1000 events having the most behind the Majors.

Also the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals features just eight players in the singles draw and they all get paid handsomely provided they qualify.

average european tour salary

The WTA has the same kind of thing in terms of specific events offering more money.

It is harder to compare golf to other sports like football, basketball and American football because athletes in those sports receive salaries dependent on contracts, signing bonuses and sponsorship too.

What we can try and do is look at the highest earning competitors in sports and see where golfers drop in.

According to the 2019 Forbes list for the highest paid athletes, Lionel Messi sits atop the tree with $127 million, $92 million of which is from his salary.

Indeed most of the top-10 make most of their money from salaries.

Out of the top-8, six have salaries that completely dwarf their endorsements.

Boxer Saul Canelo Alvarez for example earned $94 million in 2019, with only $2 million coming endorsements.

How Much Do Pro Golfers Earn

So where do golfers fit in?

The highest placed golfer is Tiger Woods with $63.9 million. $54 million of that came from endorsements.

Phil Mickelson comes next and the same story is clear. Rory McIlroy , Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth were the only other golfers to feature in the top-100, which is dominated by athletes from basketball, American football and baseball.

A clear theme throughout is that golfers and tennis players in particular only feature on the list if they make a boat load of money from endorsements.

Compared to other sports, golfers make little money from winning and salaries whereas being marketable is the key.

Three-time Major winner Spieth illuminates this clearly. In 2019 he made $2.1 million in winnings, but a staggering $29 million in endorsements.

How much does it cost to chase the dream of playing pro golf on the European Tour?

Tour pro Gary Boyd: "In reality it comes at a cost, financially and emotionally."

average european tour salary

Life as a Tour professional might seem like an easy life, but in reality it comes at a cost both financially and emotionally, writes Challenge Tour professional Gary Boyd, who has two runner-up finishes and a solo fourth to his name on the European Tour.

The sacrifice of a life on the road living out a suitcase, the emotional stressors that come along with professional athletics, the choice of missing a special occasion at home - it all adds up.

While this paints a rather pessimistic portrait of chasing a life on Tour, there are still many who join in with hopes of becoming the next Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy.

How much does it cost to chase the dream of playing pro golf on the European Tour?

If your game is not in the red, I can assure you that your bank account soon will be.

Making a name for yourself out here is a tough ask with the ever-growing talent seemingly emerging every month on Tour.

So this week at The Masters, one of the most iconic sporting events with a prize fund topping $11 million,  the rewards are there for all to see with a green jacket awaiting in the Butler Cabin.

But what about the rest of us who would do just about anything on earth to even play on golf's hallowed turf?

How much does it cost to chase the dream of playing pro golf on the European Tour?

With around 1000 competitors each year entering Tour school with only 25 cards remaining at the end of it, there is a huge sacrifice and cost behind chasing your dream when a lot of guys really are not quite ready.

The cost to enter Tour school lies in the region of £4,000 to £5,000 , once you've tallied up your entry fees, travel, accommodation and a caddie if you have one.

However, even gaining a European Tour card does not automatically guarantee that you will get into every event out here.

A lot of guys who make the grade tend to focus on playing Challenge Tour events halfway through the year simply because they do not qualify for the bigger events with giant pots of gold.

How much does it cost to chase the dream of playing pro golf on the European Tour?

So what does it really cost to play a full season?

Out on the European Tour, you're looking in the region of £60,000 to £70,000  as it is mandatory to have a caddie.

When it comes to the lower-tier Challenge Tour - where I am right now - you are looking in the region of £25,000 to £30,000 for a fraction of the prize funds.

The rewards are there at the end of it but when you consider the sacrifices of missing loved ones and special occasions, you sometimes ask yourself is it all really worth it?

But when you have a dream of making it big out here, you have to chase it.

How much does it cost to chase the dream of playing pro golf on the European Tour?

You just never know with this game. If you play well at the right time, it can change your life.

I was fortunate to experience just that on the European Tour back in 2010 when finishing fourth at the Alfred Dunhill Championship (€174,000), and runner-up at both the Czech Open (€173,000) and Italian Open (€130,000) the year after.

I am certainly thankful for the career I have had out here so far. I would say I am one of the lucky ones who have done well in previous years to help chase my dream. Some guys have part time jobs during the winter in order to help chase theirs.

Where there is a wall, there is always a door that can open out here. That is what I am holding onto right now as I look to bounce back onto the European Tour again next season.

It is important to trust your practice and just go out and keep it simple. Practice with purpose and set goals is key. It's not about just working hard, it's about working smart.

New indicator on annual average salaries in the eu.

Business person placing coin over the increasing coins stack on office desk

In 2021, the average annual full-time adjusted salary for employees in the EU was €33 500. Eurostat is publishing this indicator for the first time.

The Blue Card Directive prescribes the use of this indicator for determining the average gross annual salary for each EU Member State and granting working permits to high-skilled workers. The Directive aims to attract highly skilled workers to the EU under more flexible admission conditions, with enhanced rights and the possibility to move more easily to another EU Member State for EU Blue Card holders.

The indicator is based on a combination of national accounts and Labour Force Survey (LFS) data. It is adjusted by expressing part-time salaries as full time equivalents.

Among the EU Member States, the highest average annual adjusted full-time salary in 2021 was recorded in Luxembourg (€72 200), followed by Denmark (€63 300) and Ireland (€50 300). Meanwhile, the lowest values of the indicator were recorded in Bulgaria (€10 300), Hungary (€12 600) and Romania (€13 000).

WNBA

How does Caitlin Clark’s WNBA salary measure up in sports? An analysis shows big gaps

After a generational college run at Iowa, Caitlin Clark started her professional career this week in Indiana, where the median college graduate earns $52,267 annually, according to the U.S. Census American Consumer Survey.

But Clark isn’t your average young professional.

She’s one of the biggest stars in the country with major name recognition and commercial appeal as she enters the WNBA . She sells out arenas, inked a $28 million Nike endorsement deal and made television ratings skyrocket — and her pro potential has prompted widespread arguments about the economics of women’s basketball.

In her first season with the Indiana Fever , she’ll modestly surpass that Indiana median with $76,535 in salary. Even considering the WNBA’s five-month season, it’s a pittance compared with many other athletes, especially those hyped as having the potential to change the trajectory of their sports.

Victor Wembanyama, the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft , made $12.16 million in his first season, roughly 80 times more than Clark per game. The NFL’s No. 1 draft selection , Caleb Williams, will earn about $1 million in salary in 2024, plus a signing bonus that will net him upward of $7 million. Even Paul Skenes, who was the top pick in the 2023 MLB Draft but is far from a household name, signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth about $9.8 million, which includes a $9.2 million bonus.

The WNBA’s revenues far trail those of other major North American leagues. But Clark’s salary also lags behind professionals in niche sports like bowling, surfing and bull riding.

The base salary for a contracted player in the Professional Pickleball Association is $75,000. The top five ranked players on the PPA Tour will average $1.5 million this year in prize money and payouts. Ten players in the Professional Bowlers Association made more last year than Clark’s rookie salary. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association featured 25 bull riders whose paychecks exceeded $76,535 with the top-ranked rider making nearly Clark’s entire four-year contract worth ($338,056) in 2023 from National Finals Rodeo earnings.

Clark’s relative small salary has become such a national conversation that even the president weighed in on it.

Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all. But right now we're seeing that even if you're the best, women are not paid their fair share. It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve. — President Biden (@POTUS) April 16, 2024

One major difference between the WNBA and its counterparts across many other sports is that WNBA players earn a smaller fraction of league revenue. While NBA players have negotiated a 50-50 split of basketball-related income, WNBA salaries represented 9.3 percent of the league’s revenue in 2023. Kelsey Plum , the Las Vegas Aces star and first vice president of the players association, has repeatedly said that WNBA players want a bigger piece of the pie, not necessarily a raw salary bump. “We’re not asking to get paid what the men get paid,” she said . “We’re asking to get paid the same percentage of revenue shared.”

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has pushed back on the narrative surrounding Clark’s pay. At the CNBC Changemakers Summit , Engelbert explained that Clark could earn up to half a million in WNBA wages in 2024. However, that additional compensation relies on Clark using team and league marketing agreements as well as earning individual honors and advancing in the playoffs.

Nothing is guaranteed beyond her base salary, which resembles the paychecks seen in leagues far newer than the WNBA, which is in its 28th season. The No. 1 pick in the Pro Volleyball Federation, Asjia O’Neal, is earning $60,000 in the PVF’s inaugural season. The PWHL is also paying its players an average of $55,000 in its first year. The newer leagues have said that their sponsorships and media rights are important revenue drivers. But the WNBA draws major sponsors, too, including Google, Nike and CarMax, and has rights deals with ESPN and Amazon.

Given the WNBA’s position in the major sports landscape, perhaps it’s unreasonable to compare Clark to Wembanyama, Williams or Skenes. But she’s also just being out-earned by the lowest paid NBA player on a two-way contract ($559,872), some NFL practice players ($12,000 per week minimum) and minimum-salary earners in the NHL ($750,000).

average european tour salary

1.   Future Olympian, 18, earned $80,000 winning one multi-day event this spring and totaled $219,000 in five 2024 events.

2. Finnish pro ranked No. 15, $77,350 prize earnings in 14 events, never finished higher than third in 2023.

3. According to Sports Business Journal, the Charlotte Hornets entertainer makes an annual salary of $100,000 — not even the highest among NBA mascots.

4. Miami Marlins signed the 17-year-old catcher to a 1-year deal worth $75,000 in the 2024 class. He’s been assigned to the Dominican Summer League Marlins in the minor leagues.

5. The MLS midfielder made a $75,325 base salary in 2023 as the 789th highest paid player.

6. The Professional Pickleball League base starting prize money and payouts for a contracted player is about $75,000.

7. The golfer made $78,414 from participating in 11 events (best finish tied for 23rd) in 2023.

8. Despite not placing in a majority of competitions, the 20-year-old ranked No. 26 and earned $76,439 in 2023.

9. The chess grandmaster made nearly $80,000 for winning one tournament — the Grand Swiss — in November 2023.

10. Ranked 481st worldwide in total earnings, the Fortnite player won $83,475 last year.

The WNBA’s current position in its evolution is often compared to when Magic Johnson and Larry Bird entered the NBA, which spurred a wave of popularity that the league has ridden for decades. When Bird was drafted in 1978, he signed a five-year contract with an average annual value of $650,000 (that figure does not account for inflation). Johnson’s average salary was $460,000 over his first five seasons.

Proponents of the WNBA hope that Clark can help encourage similar rivalries, with rookies like Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky and numerous other players bringing previous history in the NCAA Tournament and other matchups.

At an April donor event, Southern California head coach Lindsey Gottlieb cited Clark’s salary as a reason to advocate for more money toward women’s college basketball. Although Clark and USC star JuJu Watkins have lucrative endorsements, Gottlieb said that neither is “going to get paid her value and worth in terms of the basketball.”

The hope for Clark and other WNBA players is that change is on the horizon. The league historically has struggled to sustain its financial footing through investment. Within the past decade, even legacy franchises such as the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks almost folded. Teams have lacked adequate practice facilities, and players have often competed overseas to supplement their incomes.

Now, teams have become generally more competitive and new ownership groups in Atlanta, Las Vegas, New York and Phoenix are focused on making WNBA life more attractive, fiscally and with perks. The WNBA has pursued more corporate partnerships and media deals to improve the value of the league. The league had an estimated $200 million in revenue in 2023, doubling its 2019 total, according to Chiney Ogwumike , former vice president of the players association. The WNBA recently announced it will spend $25 million in each of the next two seasons on charter flights. And it hopes a new media rights deal — the current one, which nets about $50 million combined from broadcast partners, expires in 2025 — will provide another influx of cash.

Consider the NWSL ’s new broadcasting deal that pays $60 million annually compared to the previous amount of $1.5 million, which helped increase the salary cap 40 percent from 2023 to 2024. Now multiple players’ contracts pay in the high six figures annually and are valued at seven figures over their lifetime. No WNBA player has ever signed a million-dollar-plus contract.

That million dollar barrier may fall before Clark signs her next deal. And yet her salary may never reflect what other stars get in similar positions without a significant change in the finances of the WNBA.

Travis Scott UK tour: Dates, how to get tickets and if there’s a pre-sale

A merican rapper Travis Scott is set to host his largest UK headline show to date this summer as part of a 14-stop continuation of his Utopia: Circus Maximus Tour across Britain and mainland Europe.

Scott is set to perform at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Manchester’s £365m Co-op Live venue in July which follows a sold-out tour of North America last year off the back of the artist’s record-breaking No 1 album UTOPIA .

The critically-acclaimed album was last year’s biggest-selling hip-hop release, pulling in 50 billion streams globally as well as the titles of most streamed album in its first week on Spotify in 2023 and most streamed album on its first day on Apple Music in 2023.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Utopia – Circus Maximus World Tour , including dates of the UK gigs and other stops and where and when to buy general and pre-sale tickets.

When is Travis Scott playing in the UK?

The first of Scott’s two newly-announced UK gigs is on Thursday 11 July at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

This is to be followed two nights later by a show at the problem-plagued Co-op Live venue in Manchester , which is scheduled for Saturday 13 July.

The Astroworld artist kicks off his European tour at the Gelre Dome in Arnhem in the Netherlands on 28 June before taking to various stages in Poland (Krakow; 2 July), Switzerland (Zurich; 4 July), France (Nice; 6 July), Austria (Vienna; 7 July) and Belgium (Antwerp; 8 July) ahead of his two stops on British soil.

He then returns to the continent to finish up the tour, performing in Romania (Constinesti; 14 July), Czechia (Prague; 18 July) and Italy (Milan; 23 July) in between stops in the German cities of Hamburg (16 July), Cologne (20 July) and Frankfurt (27 July).

The news of the new tour comes as the start of the first civil trial stemming from Scott’s 2021 Astroworld festival in Houston – at which 10 people were killed in a crowd surge – has been delayed .

Jury selection had previously been set to begin Tuesday 7 May in the wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of Madison Dubiski, a 23-year-old Houston resident who was killed during the crowd crush at Scott’s November 2021 concert.

When do tickets go on sale?

Tickets go on general sale from 10am on Friday 10 May.

Links to purchase them for each of the tour’s 12 new stops can be found at travisscott.com .

Eurovision semi-final 1: Time, odds, how to watch and full running order

The official link to tickets (as re-directed from Scott’s website) for the London show can be found here , and for Manchester here .

One euro or pound from every ticket sold will reportedly go to Scott’s Cactus Jack Foundation , a 501(c)3 (non-profit organisation) with a mission to uplift the youth from Houston (the capital of Scott’s home state, Texas) through toy drives, scholarship programmes to students at historically black colleges and universities and fulfilling expenses for education and creative endeavours.

Is there a pre-sale?

You can register in advance for early access – pre-sale – tickets to both UK concerts.

Meanwhile, a press release from Tottenham Hotspur says that Spurs season ticket holders and One Hotspur Members “will be given priority access to tickets” for the London show “with an exclusive pre-sale”.

Pre-sale tickets are set to go live at 10am on Thursday 9 May, a day before general tickets are made available for purchase.

Landlords selling properties "represent the single biggest threat to renters", according to the UK's landlord association.

Government data shows 5,790 households were threatened with homelessness between October to December last year due to receiving a notice to end an assured shorthold tenancy (this ends a person's tenancy).

And the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) has said 45% have been left needing help because their landlord planned to sell the property in the second half of 2023.

Separately, data from Rightmove found that 50,000 rental properties were needed to bring the supply of rental homes back to pre-pandemic levels.

Ben Beadle, chief executive of the NRLA, said the only answer was to "ensure responsible landlords have the confidence to stay in the market and sustain tenancies".

He said it was "vital" the Renters Reform Bill, which is currently being debated in the House of Lords, "worked for landlords as well as tenants".

"Landlords selling up is the single biggest challenge renters face," Mr Beadle said.

Around 16% of high net worth shoppers have cut spending on luxury goods, research shows - with Burberry among the companies seemingly taking a hit.

Data from wealth management firm Saltus , which surveyed 2,000 Britons who had assets of more than £250,000, found 16.29% of respondents had cut down on their personal spending in response to the current high interest rate environment and/or the impact of the rising cost of living.

And 15.78%, said they had cut down on luxury items and designer clothes.

Meanwhile, just 9.42% of respondents said the current environment had not impacted their lifestyle.

The figures follow data this week from designer store Burberry - which reported a 34% drop in annual operating profit.

Mike Stimpson, partner at Saltus, said high net worth individuals were having to "prioritise spending on essential costs including mortgages and supporting their families".

"While this reduction is not limited entirely to personal spending on luxury items, it is inevitable that brands like Burberry feel the impact, although different businesses will clearly respond differently to these pressures," he said.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is hiring 2,500 "external agents" to crackdown on "benefit cheats".

The extra staff will check millions of Universal Credit claims for accuracy as part of the government's new fraud plan.

Combined with the DWP's own internal agents tackling fraud, this will take the headcount to nearly 6,000 people.

In addition to this, the DWP is introducing a new civil penalty to punish fraudsters, and investing £70m into advanced data analytics to catch those who "exploit the natural compassion and generosity of the British people".

Work and pensions secretary Mel Stride, said: "We are scaling up the fight against those stealing from the taxpayer, building on our success in stopping £18bn going into the wrong hands in 2022-23.

"With new legal powers, better data and thousands of additional staff, our comprehensive plan ensures we have the necessary tools to tackle the scourge of benefit fraud."

With the new 15 hours a week free childcare funding coming into effect this week for children aged between 9-23 months, research shows grandparents still play a key role in helping with costs.

In April, all two-year-olds from eligible working families became entitled to 15 hours free childcare each week.

And as of this week, eligible working parents of children aged between 9-23 months are also able to apply to claim the same from September.

The government plans to increase this to 30 hours a week from September 2025.

However, grandparents still play a key role and therefore are still likely to be called upon for help from parents, according to data from the finance firm SunLife .

Data shows that half of the UK's 14 million grandparents provide childcare for their grandchildren during the working week and this rises to 55% of those with grandchildren under the age of one.

On average, the UK's grandparents spend between 22-24 hours a week providing free childcare for grandchildren under three-years-old.

So how much are grandparents saving their families and what if they were paid?

Research suggests grandparents are saving parents around £250 a week in childcare costs on average - this means that collectively, grandparents are saving their families £96bn in equivalent childcare costs every year.

SunLife's grandparent salary calculator, which uses the average pay for the many roles grandparents are taking to calculate what their "grandparent salary" would be, has also found that if grandparents were paid for the 22 hours a week they would receive an annual salary of £13,188.

Victoria Heath, chief marketing officer at SunLife, said it was   "no wonder" one in five grandparents felt their children would struggle financially without their help.

She said research showed that 13% of grandparents felt they were relied on too much for childcare, and 14% loved doing it but felt it was too much at their age.

"Having said that, most (59%) grandparents who do provide childcare say they love helping out, so it is likely they will still play a key role, because whether they are still 'needed' or not, they are certainly still wanted, and most are more than happy to do it," Ms Heath added.

How can you apply for the 15 hours free childcare?

To apply for the funding you'll need the following:

  • National Insurance number;
  • Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), if you're self-employed;
  • the UK birth certificate reference number of any children you're applying for;
  • the date you started or are due to start work.

Then, you'll need to go onto the gov.uk website and start an application.

It usually takes 20 minutes to apply and once your application has been approved, you'll get a code for free childcare to give to your childcare provider.

Mortgage possession actions have continued to rise and are currently above the previous year's levels, according to data from the Ministry of Justice .

The latest data shows mortgage claims, orders, warrants and repossessions have continued their gradual upward trend and claims are at their highest since 2019.

When compared to the same quarter in 2023, mortgage possession claims increased from 4,035 to 5,182 - this is a rise of 28%.

Meanwhile, mortgage orders increased from 2,532 to 3,019, warrants from 2,636 to 2,881 and repossessions by county court bailiffs from 729 to 759.

Landlord possession claims also increased from 23,389 to 24,874 when compared to the same quarter last year.

Craig Fish, director at Lodestone mortgages and protection, told Newspage things "need to change and quickly before it's too late".

"Though this data makes hard reading and is extremely worrying, it's not unexpected due to the significantly higher interest rate environment in which borrowers now find themselves," he said.

And Ben Perks, managing director at Orchard Financial Advisers, said he was "concerned these figures will continue to rise".

He told Newspage: "The Bank of England seems totally oblivious to the plight of the average mortgage borrower, but hopefully this data will kick their hesitancy to drop the base rate firmly into touch. The time to act is now."

The supermarket has pulled its 295g jars of Tesco Sandwich Pickle with the batch code 3254 and best before date of 11 September 2025 due to the concerns of glass traces.

The Food Standards Agency has said on its website: "This product may contain pieces of glass which makes it unsafe to eat."

Last year, the supermarket chain had to recall pastry products, including sausage rolls and steak and ale pies, over fears they contained pieces of metal and plastic.

A Tesco spokesperson told Sky News: "We've been made aware that a specific date/batch code of Tesco Sandwich Pickle may contain small pieces of glass. Therefore, this product could pose a safety risk if consumed.

"Please do not consume this product and instead return any affected product to store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required.

"Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused."

The FTSE 100 has remained stable out of the gate this morning after hitting a record high on Wednesday as better-than-expected inflation data in the US raised hopes of an interest rate cut in September.

It's been a busy start to the day with financial updates from BT Group, Premier Foods, Sage Group, and easyJet.

We'll start with easyJet, after the airline announced that its chief executive officer, Johan Lundgren, would step down in January 2025.

Mr Lundgren, who has served as CEO since 2017, will be replaced by the carrier's finance boss Kenton Jarvis.

In a financial update on its performance throughout the first half of the year, easyJet reported slightly higher revenues than anticipated, while cutting its losses compared to the same period last year.

The airline's share price fell by 6% in early trading this morning.

Elsewhere, telecoms giant BT said it had completed a £3bn cost-cutting programme ahead of schedule, and announced a further £3bn in planned savings by 2029.

The company told Sky News that the planned reductions in spending would not lead to more job losses, after BT announced last year that it would eliminate 55,000 roles.

Incoming boss Allison Kirkby said she wanted the business to prioritise the UK, with some analysts expecting BT to look at the futures of its Italian, Irish, and American divisions.

And last but not least, one of Europe's largest sellers of Rolex watches has said that sales in the UK are still down because some tourists don't want to buy here "due to the lack of VAT free shopping".

Nice for some.

The price of a healthy packed lunch has soared by around 45%, according to new research.

A lunch of wholemeal bread and fruit is more expensive for parents to put together than less nutritious versions with chocolate spread and crisps, The Food Foundation charity has found.

Unhealthy lunches for the research were made up of white bread with chocolate spread instead of wholemeal with cheese, flavoured yoghurt rather than a plain, unsweetened version and snacks such as crisps as opposed to the four portions of fruit and vegetables incorporated into the healthy lunch.

And when it came to the cheapest supermarket to buy a healthy packed lunch, Tesco topped the list with a weekly cost of £8.56 as of this month.

Morrisons was the most expensive retailer, with the price of a healthy packed lunch per week coming in at £11.72, although this was down slightly from £11.80 in October.

The equivalent cost at Sainsbury's was £10.47, Aldi was £10.08 and Asda was £9.18.

Research also showed the largest price rise in recent months was at Sainsbury's, where customers have to spend 9% more than they did at the start of the academic year in September (£9.61) for the same packed lunch.

Shona Goudie, policy and advocacy manager at The Food Foundation, said, the government's stringent eligibility criteria to qualify for free school meals was "leaving hundreds of thousands of children" who are living in poverty "at risk of malnutrition".

"No one should be priced out of being able to provide healthy food for their children and retailers need to do more to support families to afford the food they need," she said.

We spoke to three buskers to find out what it's like performing on the street in the UK.

Amir, 29, came to UK from Pakistan with passion for music

Amir Hashmi moved to the UK in 2022 to study, said he began busking in central London 10 months ago because "music was his passion".

"In Pakistan there are many problems so I decided to leave and move to London. I feel I can do better in London than my country," he said.

He said busking was now his primary income but at times he did jobs at warehouses to get by.

"I never started this for money, I started because it is my passion but now this is my main job as well," he said.

Amir, who often performs in the capital's Piccadilly Circus or along Oxford Street, said often he returned home with just £10-15 in his pocket after a day's busking.

He said: "Many times I sleep without food and sometimes I sleep on the floor of the road when I have no shelter.

"I don't have my own place to live but I have friends who often let me stay with them. They don't charge me any rent - they look after me.

"Sometimes I do private shows for income but it's very hard because the cost of living is increasing. If I go somewhere then most of the time I prefer to walk. I walk with my speakers and carry my gear."

Despite his financial struggles, Amir said he wanted to continue performing on the street as his "goal was to make people happy".

He said: "With busking, there is no stage and you can just start performing. Whenever I am performing, I connect with the people who have come to listen. If I feel people are not enjoying it, I change the song and try and make them happy."

Earlier this year, Amir recorded a song with Neha Nazneen Shakil, a Malayalam actress from India, who approached the singer three months ago in Oxford Street.

"I wrote that song 12 years ago and after all these years my song has been recorded now in London," he added.

Jade, 24, quit retail to busk

Jade Thornton, from Amersham, started busking in 2017 with a friend after leaving college at the age of 17 and quickly realised it was something she enjoyed doing and could make a living from.

She began doing it full-time at the end of 2018 but when the pandemic hit she described becoming "unemployed overnight" and having to take up retail jobs to support herself.

"I chose not to go to university - I just thought it wasn't for me so I went straight into some part-time retail jobs," she said.

"I take my cap off to anyone who does retail - it is one of the most gruelling jobs. People who do retail don't get nearly as much respect as they deserve.

"Some of the customers I was facing were not that kind and I thought this is making me miserable, so I just thought 'if I don't leave now then when?'"

As the global economy slowly began to recover, she decided to leave retail and pursue music full-time in 2022.

"It is hard to switch off - I do busking but I am constantly messaging clients, writing set lists and learning songs," she said.

When it came to finances, Jade said there was no average to how much she could earn but it could fluctuate from £15-100 day-to-day depending on a number of factors.

"It relies on the time of month, whether the sun is out, if people have been paid, if Christmas is on the way or if Christmas has just passed," she explained.

The musician said she did struggle initially when she began busking but her parents were always supportive.

She said: "You obviously get a few questions from people asking 'are you sure you want to quit your job and sing on the street?'

"I lived at home for a long time and I'm grateful my parents could support me in that way because I know not everyone has that opportunity."

While performing outdoors is now Jade's full-time job, she said some months were more difficult to make money than others.

"If I'm being brutally honest in months like January and February it would be super difficult. This year I had enough gigs in December to cover me for January," she said.

"Last year from June-July and December I did not have to go busking because I got so many gigs through busking. I'm part of a lot of online agencies and I also do lots of pub gigs, weddings, birthdays and other events."

Jade noted though that the cost of living crisis had made things harder.

She said: "A few pub gigs I've had have been cancelled because they've had to rethink their strategies but if somebody cancels then I can just go out busking. There has been a slight dent when it comes to finances but that's from COVID as well - with COVID I was unemployed overnight."

The young musician went on to say she was "very grateful" when somebody did tip her and even small gestures like sitting, listening or just a smile were "currencies in themselves".

"It's escapism for me as a singer and then it's escapism for the audience as well," she added.

"Children also have such a great time listening to buskers and some may not have an opportunity for many reasons to go and see live music so if they can come across it in the street and that can spark something that's a wonderful thing to think I'm a little part of that."

Charlotte, 34, long-time busker

Charlotte Campbell, 34, who usually busks along the Southbank or in the London Underground, said she started busking during the 2012 London Olympics and while "busking used to be enough", more recently she has had to take on more gigs in the evening.

"A typical day is usually busking until around 6pm and then a gig in the evening - 8pm onwards," she said.

"I could still probably make a living from busking but I've taken on more paid gigs since the pandemic because everything became so uncertain. I think that uncertainty has just carried through now - that seems to be the way of life now."

The musician said tips for her CDs, which she puts on display during her performances, ranged between £5-10 and in the current cashless climate a card reader was "essential".

She said she pre-sets her card reader to £3 when playing on the Southbank and £2 when busking inside the London Underground "because people are rushing".

While she described her earnings as a "trade secret", she said the busker income had "definitely gone down" but this was due to a few factors - the pandemic, people carrying less cash and the cost of living crisis.

"Also, a lots of pitches have closed which means there are a lot more buskers trying to compete for one spot so all of those things have impacted my living as a busker," she said.

"I would say even though my income is primarily from busking I have had to subsidise it with more paid gigs than before. I just haven't felt as secure in my living from busking in the last couple of years.

"Most of the gigs I have are booked by people who have seen me busking so indirectly busking is my entire career- if I don't busk I wouldn't get the gigs I play in the evening. So directly and indirectly busking is my entire income."

In spite of uncertainty, she said it was freeing to be able to go out and perform for people in an intimate way.

"You are not up on a stage and there is no separation between you and them.  It's a really great connection you can make - I want to be able to hold onto that," she added.

Every Thursday  Savings Champion founder Anna Bowes  gives us an insight into the savings market and how to make the most of your money. Today she's focusing on children's accounts...

While the rates on adult savings accounts have risen and fallen over the course of 2024, the top rates on accounts for children have remained stable - but are pretty competitive once again, as other account rates have started to fall.

And there are plenty of different types of savings accounts to choose from, from the tax free Junior ISA, to children's regular savings accounts, fixed term bonds and easy access accounts.

Those who are able to start saving for their children early, could significantly improve their financial health in the future – especially when taking compounding interest into consideration.

If you were to save £50 a month from birth, you could give them a gift of more than £17,250 at age 18, assuming a tax-free interest rate of 4.95% - which is currently the top Junior ISA rate available.

If you, your friends and family were able to gift a total of £9,000 a year to a child (the current Junior ISA allowance), at the same rate, you could give them almost £265,000 when they reach 18.

Now that's a gift worth having!

Children have their own personal allowance, so for the majority there will be no tax to pay on their savings interest.

However, parents should be aware that there may be a tax liability to themselves on the interest earned on any money they gift to their children, until they reach the age of 18.

If the gross interest earned is less than £100 for each parent's gift, it will be treated as the child’s under a 'de minimis' rule.

This means that provided the interest earned does not make the child a taxpayer, they will be able to offset this against their personal tax allowance, so it will often be free of tax.

But if the interest is more than £100 for each parent's gift, then it will be treated as that parent’s interest for tax purposes and therefore they may need to pay tax at their marginal rate - if it takes them above their Personal Allowance and/or Personal Savings Allowance.

Gifts from any other family members or friends will not be viewed in the same way. Instead, any interest earned will be treated as belonging to the child themselves and therefore can be earned tax free if they are non-taxpayers.

The exception to this rule is on funds deposited into a JISA, Child Trust Fund or NS&I Premium Bonds.  The returns from these are tax free for all.
