Our Pick Of The Best Domestic Travel Insurance For Australians

Published: Apr 4, 2024, 9:00am

In Australia, domestic tourism accounts for a large proportion of the total visitor economy and—like many aspects of the economy—was severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, in the two years since restrictions ended, spend on domestic travel has ramped up, and is expected to keep growing over the next four years, according to Tourism Research Australia (TRA)’s report, Tourism Forecasts for Australia 2023 to 2028 .

The report shows that a large proportion of Australians were quick to embrace domestic travel in 2022—the first year that domestic travel became possible for many of us, while certain international destinations remained out of reach.  This demand has eased somewhat, but the TRA is positive in its outlook for domestic tourism.

As the report stated: “…The noticeable slowdown in domestic leisure travel in 2023 has led to a reassessment of the factors that had boosted demand in 2022. As a result, the forecast profile for domestic travel demand is generally softer than that presented last year.  Nevertheless, domestic tourism spend (which is already above its pre-pandemic level) is forecast to continue to grow over the forecast period, as are domestic trip numbers.”

If you’re one of the many Australians looking to take a trip across our vast continent, you may want to consider taking out domestic travel insurance.

Many Australians don’t consider domestic travel insurance as a must-have because our medical system, in the form of Medicare or private health insurance, covers us across state borders. But there are other benefits to taking out domestic travel insurance that aren’t medical-related, such as trip cancellations, lost documents and luggage, and theft.

To find what domestic travel insurance would suit you and your trip, Forbes Advisor Australia has compared more than 20 of the most popular domestic travel policies, noting the key features of each. Below is a summary of our pick of the best, why we chose them and the pros and cons of each policy. We also explain how we reached our conclusions in the methodology section below.

Travel Delay Cover?

Up to $2000

$250 for delays six hours or more plus an additional $250 for each additional 24 hours up to a maximum total limit of $500

Allianz is a household name in Australia when it comes to insurance, and its domestic travel insurance policy is popular among travellers. Scoring four stars from more than 3000 customer reviews on Product Review, the Allianz Domestic Travel Insurance policy is clearly a winner for many Aussies.

With no maximum age limit and the ability to tailor the plan with cruise, snow or adventure cover if needed, the policy is pitched at a wide range of travellers and trip types. However, it’s worth noting there is no cover for missed connections nor any online discounts available.

  • Cancellation cover chosen by customer
  • No maximum age limit nor excess for higher ages
  • Cruise, snow and adventure cover can be added on
  • No cover for missed connections
  • Cancellation cover isn’t valid if involving death, injury or illness of a relative over 85

Bupa Domestic

$250 for delays 6 hours or more plus an additional $250 for each additional 24 hours up to a maximum total limit of $500

The Bupa Domestic policy is underwritten by Allianz Australia Insurance, making it similar to Allianz’s domestic travel insurance policy. As with Allianz, there is no maximum age limit and travellers can add cover for cruise holidays, winter sports and higher-risk adventure sports. Lost luggage and personal effects are also covered up to $10,000 with sub-limits applying, however higher item limits can be included for valuables, such as engagement rings or expensive equipment.

There is no cover for missed connections, but travel delays are covered up to a total of $2,000, while cancellation cover tops out at $1,500 (and is not available to those aged 85 and over).  Additionally, existing Bupa health members can receive a 15% discount on premiums. In terms of customer satisfaction, Bupa scored slightly lower than Allianz with 3.9 stars  from 138 reviews on ProductReview.

  • 15% discount for Bupa health members
  • Option to increase item limits for valuables
  • Maximum cancellation cover is only $1,500

Qantas Domestic Travel Insurance

$75 per completed 6 hours

The Australian Comprehensive Travel Insurance policy is Qantas’ domestic travel insurance offering, available to Australians of all ages. Cancellations are covered up to $5,000, and there is a provision to claim missed connections under additional travel expenses. There is also up to $600 cover for missed connections, with $75 allocated for every six hours of delay.

Cruises are covered within the policy at no extra cost, and snow sports cover can be added as an additional pack. While there are no online discounts available, Qantas frequent flyer members can earn points via the purchase of a policy.

  • Missed connections can be claimed
  • Qantas points available
  • Limited travel delay cover
  • Some poor customer reviews
  • No option to add adventure cover

1Cover Domestic

however, those 80 years or older incur a $3000 excess.

$200 for delays 6 hours or more plus an additional $200 for each additional 24 hours

The 1Cover Travel Insurance is highly rated among its customers, receiving a score of 4.2 stars from 91 reviews of its domestic policy on ProductReview. Its domestic travel insurance offering reflects this rating, with no maximum age limit to take out the policy, $5 million in personal liability cover, and unlimited cancellation cover when circumstances occur that are out of the policyholder’s control.

Additionally, customers can choose to add-on additional packs for cruise holidays or snow sports, and both lost luggage and lost personal effects are covered with certain sub-limits applying dependent on the item. Unfortunately at the time of writing, there are no online discounts available for the policy.

  • Positive customer reviews
  • Good travel delay and cancellation cover
  • No increased item limits available for valuables
  • $3000 excess applicable for those aged over 80
  • No online discounts

however, older travellers cannot purchase snow/adventure packs

$200 for delays 6 hours or more, plus an additional $200 for each additional 24 hours

The Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns and restrictions demonstrated the importance of travel insurance, especially policies with adequate cancellation cover for when circumstances changed. In this vein, Fast Cover Domestic offers unlimited cancellation cover, along with up to $2,000 coverage for travel delays.

The policy is available for Australians up to age 89, however older travellers will not be able to purchase  snow sport or adventure add-ons. There is no option to add cruise cover to the domestic policy; instead customers will need to choose cruise as the destination   in order to be covered for the cruise portion of their trip.

  • Unlimited cancellation cover
  • Trip delays covered
  • Must be aged 69 and under to purchase snow pack
  • Adventure pack limited to those aged 74 and under.

nib travel insurance

delays must be more than 6 hours, with $250 per 24 hours

The domestic travel insurance policy offered by nib is available to Australians of all ages, with existing nib customers granted a 10% discount. Delays are covered if they are more than six hours long, and only up to the value of $500. Lost luggage is covered up to $4,000, and item limits can be increased if necessary to a total of $10,000.

Unfortunately, cruises are not covered within this plan, nor is there any option to add it as additional coverage. The same goes for adventure activities—however snow sports can be added at an additional premium.

  • Cancellation cover limit chosen by customer
  • Option to increase item limits
  • 10% discount for nib customers
  • No cruise cover available
  • No other online discounts available
  • Low coverage amount for delays

In order to add snow sport coverage to the policy, consumers will also have to ask for a quote from Medibank. Cruise cover cannot be added to the domestic policy; instead travellers embarking on a cruise holiday will need to purchase Medibank’s international travel insurance policy.

Travel Insurance Direct Domestic

$250 per 24 hours

Scoring 4.1 stars from 23 customer reviews, the Travel Insurance Direct Domestic policy is well-liked by Australian customers, although it’s worth noting that the domestic policy option has only attracted a handful of reviews so should not be seen as a comprehensive assessment of customers’ experiences.

Cover is available to those aged up to 75 years at the time of purchase. The cancellation cover value is chosen by the customer, which includes a cancellation due to a family emergency, and missed connections are also covered up to $2,000. Unfortunately, there is no option to add cruise cover to the policy nor adventure activities, but there is an option to add snow cover.

  • Option for snow sports coverage
  • Positive reviews
  • No option for cruise cover
  • Age limit is 75 years
  • Low level of cover for travel delays

Forbes Advisor Australia took a methodical approach when comparing the best domestic travel insurance for Australians. An in-depth analysis of more than 20 different policies was conducted, with data being analysed from company websites, product disclosure statements, and customer reviews.

The key features examined of each policy included:

  • Who the policy was underwritten by, to ensure it is a reputable and trusted company;
  • Whether it covers you for personal liability, in case you unintentionally cause damage to someone or something;
  • If there is accidental death cover and, if so, what the maximum payout is;
  • If there is cover for family emergencies, and any criteria that must be met–such as maximum ages;
  • For those renting a car while travelling, if there is coverage for the excess for damaged or stolen rental cars;
  • Whether or not it covers you for travel delays, along with any sub-limits related to emergency accommodation or meal costs;
  • Whether or not it covers you for cancellations, the criteria for a cancellation and the maximum amount the policy will pay;
  • If there is any cover for missed connecting flights;
  • Whether there is lost luggage cover, or cover for stolen or damaged luggage;
  • The sub-categories of lost personal belongings that it may cover, including electronics or cash;
  • If you can increase the item limits cover that the policy offers for valuables such as jewellery or speciality gear;
  • The maximum age that the policy offers coverage for;
  • Any online discounts the insurance provider offers, or additional perks; and
  • The star ranking it has received from existing and previous customers via the leading independent opinion site, ProductReview. This metric was considered more reliable if the insurer had a large number of reviews; a smaller number of reviews were considered less reliable.

About Star Rankings You will note that we have included a star rating next to each product or provider. This rating was determined by the editorial team once all of the data points above were considered, and the pros and cons of each product attribute was reviewed. The star rating is solely the view of Forbes Advisor editorial staff. Commercial partners or advertisers have no bearing on the star rating or their inclusion on this list. Star ratings are only one factor to be considered, and Forbes Advisor encourages you to seek independent advice from an authorised financial adviser in relation to your own financial circumstances and investments before you decide to choose a particular financial product or service.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, states and territories all had different rules and requirements for domestic travel. This included mandatory quarantine, proof of vaccinations, border declarations, and government-enforced mask wearing or isolation requirements.

There are now no restrictions in place for domestic travel, meaning Australians are able to travel to different states and territories as they please.

Airlines have also loosened their restrictions, with mask wearing no longer enforced on planes, but rather encouraged.

Despite restrictions no longer being in place, Covid-19 is still active in communities. Considering that you or anyone you are travelling with could contract the virus and possibly be too ill to travel, it is worth determining if your domestic travel insurance would cover cancellations or flight changes due to Covid-19.

Related: Best Travel Insurance for Australians

As most Australians already have medical cover that is valid no matter where in Australia they are–whether via Medicare or private health insurance–there are still many other reasons to purchase domestic travel insurance that don’t relate to medical needs. Some of these factors may include:

Your domestic travel insurance policy can cover you if unforeseen events arise that cause you to have to cancel your trip. As Smarttraveller puts it, if you’ve already spent a lot on your holiday, it’s not too much extra to buy travel insurance to then be able to recoup potential losses.

It’s important to check your product disclosure statement (PDS) to understand what and what will not qualify as a reason for cancellation. For example, some policies may no longer cover you having to cancel due to contracting Covid-19, as it is no longer a requirement to isolate if you contract the virus.

Delays and Change of Plans

Similar to cancellations, domestic travel insurance can also cover you if you have to change your holiday plans or are subject to delays. For example, if you have to travel home early due to sickness or injury, your insurance policy may be able to cover the cost of the new flight.

Another example is if you are travelling for a concert or an event that is already pre-paid and you are subject to travel delays that cause you to miss the event. In this instance, your policy may reimburse you for lost costs.

Lost Belongings

Domestic travel insurance policies can also cover lost items, which is important if you are travelling with valuables. Many policies offer this cover in terms of three different categories: lost luggage, lost valuables, and lost cash. Additionally, the cover usually also extends to belongings that have been stolen or damaged.

There are often sub-limits applicable to certain items, such as electronics.

Car Hire Excess

If you are hiring a car for your travels, then domestic travel insurance is a smart choice of investment (if it offers car hire excess coverage). This is because if any damage occurs to the vehicle, your travel insurance policy will cover the cost of your excess up to a certain amount.

If you don’t have travel insurance with a car hire excess coverage, you would have to pay the car hire company’s full excess charge for any damage that occurs which is usually quite a costly charge or pay more at the vehicle car hire provider to reduce your excess to zero (if this is possible).

Personal Liability

A domestic travel insurance policy will usually provide cover up to a certain amount if you accidentally cause damage to a property or accidentally injure someone else. It’s worth noting that this cover is often included in comprehensive car insurance policies, so if you are travelling by road in your own vehicle and have a comprehensive car insurance policy, it may not be a necessary inclusion.

Cruise, Snow and Adventure Cover

If you are going on a specific type of trip, it’s important to make sure that your domestic travel insurance policy will cover the activities you intend to take part in. For example, if you are heading for a snow holiday, or on an ‘adventure’ trip such as a motorcycle tour, it’s important to make sure you are covered.

While these kinds of trips may not automatically be covered in a domestic travel insurance policy, they are often able to be covered upon purchasing an additional pack on top of the base policy such as “snow cover” or “adventure activities”. A brief note regarding cruise cover: even if you are cruising in Australian waters, you may not be covered by Australia’s Medicare system because the cruise company is not obligated to have a Medicare-registered GP on board, or you may cross into international waters. This is why cruise cover is especially important.

For seniors looking to travel domestically, travel insurance is advised. However, it’s important to note that many travel insurance providers and policies have maximum age limits. That being said, it’s important to make sure your policy will cover you and anyone in your travelling party for whatever age they are on the trip.

Some policies have a maximum age limit of only 69 years old, while others don’t have a maximum age at all. Additionally, some policies may enforce an additional excess for seniors depending on the destination or duration of your trip; others may stipulated that there are certain limitations on cancellation cover or other benefits for seniors.

While many policies cover accidental death, there may also be limitations placed on this cover depending on your age. Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to domestic travel insurance for seniors (or travellers of any age, for that matter). That’s why it is essential to carefully read the PDS of your chosen policy to understand whether you and your travelling party will be covered, and any conditions or exemptions that you should be aware of that may affect your ability to make a claim.

Can you get travel insurance for domestic travel?

Yes, domestic travel insurance policies are available from many travel insurance providers in Australia. These policies can cover you for a range of circumstances while travelling throughout the nation, including stolen valuables or car hire excess.

Am I able to travel domestically without a passport?

Yes, you are not required to have a passport in order to travel domestically. There are no passport checks when crossing state borders within the country, whether you are travelling by road, sea or air.

What is the best domestic travel insurance in Australia?

The ‘best’ domestic travel insurance policy available to Australians is subjective, considering Australian travellers will have different needs in terms of cover for their trip. For example, a 21-year-old going on a ski holiday in Victoria will want a policy that includes cover for snow sports, while an 80- year-old going to visit family in Western Australia will not.

Despite differing needs of travellers, Forbes Advisor Australia has analysed some of the most popular insurers on the market and compiled a list of our favourite providers, based solely on our editorial judgment. However, it’s important to note this list is not intended to be definitive and does not replace your own research as to the best domestic travel insurance for you.

Is travel insurance within Australia worth it?

Domestic travel insurance is certainly recommended by most travel experts as a form of protection against the myriad events that can go wrong when travelling: delays, illness, cancellations and theft of luggage or valuables. While you won’t need medical coverage while travelling domestically (as you are covered under Medicare), most travel insurers offer a type of domestic policy that is tailored specifically to local travellers and the most common mishaps, such as having to cancel a trip because you are ill or travel delays.

Can you buy domestic travel insurance?

Yes, and many of the travel insurers that offer comprehensive international trip coverage, will also offer a domestic policy that is specifically tailored to locals. This type of insurance is perfect for unforeseen events, such as luggage theft, travel delays or cancellations, personal liability, missed connections and car excess coverage.

What's good about InsureandGo?

  • It's very cheap. Out of 23 insurers, its Domestic Gold policy is typically $180+ less than average.
  • The Bare Essentials option cost $2.60 a day for a 2 week trip. That makes it the cheapest policy on Finder.
  • The Domestic Gold option won Finder's domestic travel insurance award . It covers up to $50,000 for cancellations, $25,000 for travel delays, $8,000 for lost luggage, $5,000 for COVID cancellation and rearrangement costs, and $7,500 for rental car excess cover.
  • As the name implies, Bare Essentials covers well, the essentials - $2,000 for cancellations, $2,000 for lost luggage and it can cover pre-existing conditions with an assessment.
  • The Bare Essentials option is probably fine for short trips. It might not be enough for longer holidays.
  • The product disclosure statement is confusing. Unfortunately, this is an issue with many travel insurers.

Why Gary selected InsureandGo Travel

Domestic Gold

The insurance team analysed 23 comprehensive domestic travel insurance policies as part of the 2023 Finder Awards. We rated policies on both price and 14 different features. InsureandGo's Domestic Gold was one of the cheapest comprehensive policies.

Bare Essentials

The Domestic Bare Essentials was the cheapest policy available on Finder. We used our travel insurance engine to compare quotes. The cheapest policy was based on a 2 week trip for a 30 year old.

Lots of domestic travel insurance policies cover COVID-related expenses . These can include:

  • Trip rearrangement or cancellation costs if you, a fellow traveller or your host gets COVID and it impacts your trip
  • Expenses if you're unexpectedly forced into quarantine during your trip
  • A prepaid activity that's booked in Australia or New Zealand is shut down
  • Extra child care costs if you get COVID

Brands with covid benefits for domestic trips

Yes, you've got Medicare but there are lots of other ways travel insurance can come in handy:

  • Cancellations. This can include anything you've pre-booked – flights, accommodation, excursions and more.
  • Luggage. Lost and delayed luggage has been more common since COVID. Travel insurance can cover essentials so your trip isn't disrupted.
  • Hiring a car. Rental car excess cover is often included in your domestic travel insurance policy so you can avoid the pricey insurance at the dealership.
  • Snow trips. Most brands offer ski insurance policies that will cover your equipment and reimburse you for unused lift passes if something goes wrong. There are similar policies for golfers too.

There are loads of domestic travel insurance policies to choose from. While most cover similar situations, you will find some differences with price and benefit limits. It's also often the case that certain benefits are automatically included or offered as add-ons.

Here is a list of some of our partners and how their domestic policies compare. The policy cost is based on a hypothetical 7-day trip taken by a 28-year-old traveller between 5 and 12 April 2024.

Our travel insurance engine and expert picks makes it easy to find domestic cover

Finding a cheap domestic travel insurance policy shouldn't be difficult. Here are a few simple ways you can reduce your domestic travel insurance premium:

  • Buy a bare-bones policy. Some insurers offer budget policies that only cover you for the most costly risks, like needing to cancel your trip or cut it short due to an emergency. Obviously, you won't be covered for as much, but if you're looking to save, this is the easiest way to do it.
  • Increase your excess. You can reduce your premium by agreeing to pay a higher excess on your claims. Just don't increase your excess to a level you'd have a hard time paying.
  • Bargain shop. Insurers often run special promotions. If you look hard enough, you'll find coupon codes , giveaways and loyalty incentives.
  • Buy a joint policy. Many insurers will give you a discount if you and your travelling companion (be it friend or partner) take out a policy together . You'll each receive full benefits in most cases.
  • Don't add options you don't need. Some people need extra cover, especially if their trip involves expensive hobbies like skiing. But if your flights and activities didn't cost much, you can go with a more no-frills policy instead.
  • Shop around. It definitely pays to weigh your options. Once you've determined what you need, comparing policies becomes much easier. Review your options carefully and pay attention to each policy's features, limitations and exclusions.

Because of Australia's public healthcare system, Medicare, domestic travel insurance rarely provides medical cover. As well as this, insurers will provide you a list of circumstances that will void your cover . These are called exclusions. Here are some you may encounter:

  • You didn't disclose a pre-existing condition. You'll be denied for claims related to pre-existing conditions unless your insurer approved it ahead of time. If you have an ailment, tell the insurer before signing up.
  • You were careless with your belongings. Don't leave your stuff unattended. If it's stolen, the insurer won't replace it.
  • You acted recklessly. Say goodbye to your claim if you're drunk or high , or if you break the law.
  • You ignored medical advice. If the doctor says don't travel, you should probably listen. It's dangerous to your health and your claim.
  • You cancelled your trip for no good reason. Your insurer won't reimburse you just because you changed your mind about travelling .

  • Your health insurance will cover you for injuries while in Australia, but you still need travel insurance to deal with unexpected cancellations and lost luggage.
  • One other common trap? Remember, you're not covered by Medicare on a cruise, even if it's only in Australian waters.
  • Shop around - there are big differences in the costs of policies with similar inclusions.

Flights in and around Australia can often be quite affordable, so it's tempting to assume it's worth the risk to travel uninsured. It really comes down to how much you're willing to risk. In the current post-lockdown environment, with flights frequently being cancelled and luggage being lost, it's a really good idea to get travel insurance even if you're only travelling within Australia.

Is medical evacuation and repatriation covered by domestic travel insurance?

Only a select few brands will cover you for medical evacuation by road or air if you need it in Australia. Our researchers found that Travel Insurance Direct will cover up to $50,000 in expenses for medical evacuation or repatriation on home turf. If you're cruising on Australian waters and want to be covered for emergency medical evacuation, you'll typically need to purchase a comprehensive international travel insurance policy. Remember to read the fine print in your PDS to find out how you're covered.

Will I be covered by Medicare if I go to see a doctor in another state?

Yes. Medicare will cover you regardless of what state you are travelling in. Because domestic travel insurance policies don't need to cover medical expenses, they are typically a bit cheaper than international policies. The only thing you might want to check is if your ambulance health cover includes all states.

I am over 70. Can I take out cover?

Yes. Most insurers will cover you if you're over 70 years. In some cases you may be required to submit details of your medical history in order to take out cover.

Do I have to be a certain distance from my home for cover to apply?

In most cases, yes. Most insurers will require you to be at least 200km from your place of residence for your domestic policy to apply.

Is cover on my credit card enough?

Most credit cards don't offer cover for domestic travel, only for international trips. That said, there are some cards that will offer cover for cancelled flights, delays and missed connections. Find out more about how credit card travel insurance compares to standalone cover .

I'm taking a cruise in Australian waters. Is domestic travel insurance enough?

You will not be covered by Medicare or private health insurance for any medical-related losses while at sea, even if travelling between Australian ports, so you'll need an international policy. Learn more about cruise travel insurance .

Is Norfolk Island covered under domestic policies?

There are no Medicare benefits for Norfolk Island so you will need an international policy. As an example, for the provider Covermore, this would fall under region Indonesia, South West Pacific, Norfolk Island and New Zealand.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Domestic travel insurance

Compare domestic cover | What is covered | What isn't | Why you need domestic cover | FAQs

With international travel off the agenda for the foreseeable future, it's encouraging to see Aussies scratching their itch in their own backyard.  The  COVID-19 pandemic  has affected thousands of Aussie travellers and their future holiday plans, but, cooped-up Aussies are keen to hit the road in their home country as the travel bug continues to bite hard.

Although the travel industry is in a place of extreme uncertainty, domestic holidays have begun to boom. After being locked indoors and restricted for so long, Aussies are looking for unique, regional and peaceful places – not cities to visit.  For now, we can say bye to Bali and Fiji and hello to Port Douglas, Byron and Broome. Australia is one big place and there is just as much to see and do here as there is going abroad. Blessed with beautiful beaches, a myriad of natural wonders, unique wildlife, large expanses of the outback and a collection of cosmopolitan cities, it’s easy to see why this captivating country is a complete travel destination. The comfort of being close to home combined with the relaxed Aussie lifestyle makes it easy to overlook travel insurance for a domestic holiday.  Whilst the majority of us don't need to worry about medical cover when travelling domestically (assuming you're covered by Medicare or private health cover), being protected at home is just as important as being covered overseas.

Lost luggage, damage to a rental car, flight delays, cancellations and theft are all situations that could quickly put a downer on any domestic trip. Our guide helps to explain everything there is to know about cover for your holiday-at-home! We all need to do our bit to keep our loved ones and country safe, so its important to be informed of the government restrictions in place across Australia. Be sure to understand the current restrictions and changes that may affect you and your travels. You can check restrictions in all states and territories using the  COVID-19 Restriction Checker . Right now, you cannot travel overseas unless you have an exemption to leave Australia. You can learn more about leaving Australia by visiting  COVID-19 and the Australian border .  Having said that, Pacific and Asian travel bubbles are on the way. Travel insurance is there to cover you for unexpected and unforeseen events, so cover for COVID-19 is scarce.  We're not aware of any policies that will cover you for cancellations relating to COVID-19, so be sure to opt for travel booking options that offer flexibility in cancellations.

WHAT DOES DOMESTIC TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER?

cancellation cover

cancellation cover

Sometimes trips just don't go to plan! Domestic cancellation benefits cover the cost of rearranging or cancelling your trip because of unforeseen circumstances like illness, accidents & extreme weather. Cover starts from the day you buy your policy not when your trip starts :)

cancellation

Lost or Damaged Luggage

It's a real pain in the butt when your stuff is lost, stolen or doesn't show up. At least if disasters happen on your holiday at home your policy will replace or reimburse you for your baggage and personal items if they disappear or are damaged.

No hidden fees

Travel delays

Bummer, your interstate flight is delayed, now what!? If your transport is postponed due to an unforeseen reason, your out-of-pocket accommodation, meals, and transport costs would be covered until you get back-on-track.

rental excess

Rental car excess

Hiring a car? Did you know domestic travel insurance often includes your rental vehicle excess should you have a ding or your hire car is stolen? Don’t take up the expensive collision damage waiver with your rental company, get cover with your domestic policy for a fraction of the cost.

family emergency

Family emergency

It's always a worry going on holiday leaving loved ones behind. Never fear, should a close relative, or the person you’re travelling with become seriously ill, injured or heaven-forbid die, your travel expenses would be claimable. Restrictions can apply for relatives age, medical conditions and where they live.

personal liability

Personal liability

A lawsuit would certainly put a dampener on your dream holiday. Relax as you're covered in the event that you are found to be legally liable for accidental injury or damage you may have caused to another person or their property whilst on your trip.

WHAT doesn't  domestic travel insurance cover?

Common claims on domestic travel insurance.

Things can go wrong when you’re travelling in Australia too. Sometimes before you even get a chance to leave your home.

We surveyed some of Australia's leading travel insurers on the most common claims for Domestic Travel Insurance:

  • Trip cancellation costs because a traveller or a family member becomes seriously ill or injured (33% of claims)
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage - including our beloved mobile devices (15% of claims)
  • Excess for a stolen or damaged rental car (11% of claims)
  • Flights cancelled due to natural disasters or severe weather (8% of claims)
  • Additional expenses because someone’s sick or hurt (5% of claims).

Why you need domestic cover?

Too many Aussies go on holidays at home without thinking they need travel insurance when they do! Here’s why!

Exxy flight Costs

Australia is a big place! Going from one side to the other will set you back significantly.  If a family emergency stopped you from going on your trip, or your flight was cancelled, would you have enough money to pay for another flight?

Natural disasters

Floods, storms, hurricanes don't just happen overseas, they happen here too. Should a severe weather event affect your trip, your domestic cover will reimburse you for any out-of-pocket expenses. Phew!

Missed events

Booked flights to see your favourite pop star or sporting team perform? In the event that your flight to that big event is cancelled or delayed domestic travel insurance will help you get there on time.

Your stuff is important

Loss, theft or damage to your prized possessions can be a common, yet gut-wrenching experience. Don't worry, if your personal belongings go AWOL the right policy will pay to replace or repair them. Woop!

For your peace of mind

Many holidays are hassle-free but a reasonable domestic policy is a small price to pay to cover your holiday at home. You wouldn’t travel overseas without cover, so don’t travel around Australia without it either.

travel insurance quotes

Hiring a car in Australia

Cruising d omestically , domestic travel insurance faq's, what region does domestic travel insurance cover.

When you buy domestic cover, you are purchasing a policy for the whole country including Tasmania, Norfolk Island and Torres Strait. Create a quote to start comparing prices and features.

Am I covered if my domestic flight is cancelled due to the coronavirus?

The short answer is, no. If your airline cancels your flight due to the coronavirus it is their responsibility to reschedule or reimburse the costs of the flight.

Am I covered for holidays within a short distance from home?

This depends upon the policy that you buy. Some insurers require you to be a certain distance from your home in order for the domestic cover to kick-in! It varies from around 50-200km so be sure to check the PDS if you're planning a staycation close to home.

Am I covered for cruising domestically?

It's choppy waters out there! Some insurers cover you automatically when going on a cruise, others require you to purchase a cruise pack and some cover you as long as you have an international policy like the Pacific for example. If you are unsure, pick up the phone and give your insurer a call to check that you have the right cover. When you go on a cruise in Australian waters, in most cases it’s required for you to purchase a Pacific policy. This is because visiting the doctor onboard the ship is charged at private/international rates. You’ll also need a Pacific policy to be covered for helicopter rescue off the ship. Some companies still allow you to purchase a domestic plan, but you’ll need to add-on a cruise pack in order to be covered from ship-to-shore.

What does rental vehicle excess cover?

Rental vehicle excess is the amount that you would have to pay in the event that your rental vehicle is stolen or damaged, while in your care. Many people buy domestic travel insurance for this benefit alone as it is far cheaper to buy a travel insurance policy, including cover for your hire car than it is buying excess cover direct from your rental company.

Can I buy domestic travel insurance for relatives visiting me in Australia?

Some Aussie companies offer “Visitors Travel Insurance” as it is known. You may be required to purchase the policy before the friends or relatives arrive in Australia and waiting periods may reply. See more about visitors to Australia cover here.

Does domestic travel insurance cover me for family emergencies?

Yes, in most cases, if a loved one is unexpectedly hospitalised or passes away and you need to return home early, your domestic cover will pay to get you there.

Does domestic travel insurance cover me for skiing in Thredbo or Perisher?

In most cases, you’ll need to purchase some sort of ski or adventure pack in order to be covered for skiing or snowboarding within Australia. You should also consider whether ambulance costs would be covered should you need to be evacuated off a mountain. Speak to your chosen insurer to check if emergency evacuation benefits are included in their domestic snow pack.

Can I buy annual travel insurance for domestic trips?

Are you in favour of a frequent city break? Whether it's Sydney, Adelaide or Perth you might benefit from a multi-trip policy designed for frequent domestic travellers. If you have more than two trips planned within a 12 month period an annual travel insurance policy can be significantly cheaper than purchasing a single trip policy each time you travel.

What does domestic travel insurance cover?

Domestic Travel Insurance is specifically for trips within Australia. Your cover will typically include cover for loss or damage to luggage, travel delays, cancellation fees. Other benefits such as rental vehicle excess, personal liability and theft of cash are common too. It's important to note that medical benefits are not covered for domestic policies.

Domestic travel insurance FAQs

What is travel insurance for domestic travel.

Medibank's Domestic Comprehensive Travel Insurance policy covers a range of unexpected hiccups during your Australian adventure. It includes benefits such as cancellation and amendment fees, missed connections, theft, loss and damage of luggage, and rental car insurance excess - this even includes a bonus cover for the insurance excess on your personal vehicle. We also offer  COVID-19 benefits  for a range of situations such as COVID impacting your accommodation and pre-paid activities, so you can book your travel at ease.

Please read the combined  PDS/FSG  for further information on coverage and exclusions.

Why aren't medical expenses covered for domestic travel cover?

Medibank does not cover medical expenses for domestic travel to help limit over-insurance for our customers. While traveling domestically, Australian citizens and permanent residents can use Medicare or private health insurance to access medical treatments. Visa holders who are allowed to live, work or study in Australia would be able to use OVHC/OWHC/OSHC cover to access medical treatments.

Got a question about travel insurance? We're here to help

What is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover several costs and disruptions when travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per plan; however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, overseas medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. Things like the destination, length of trip, optional additional cover for specific activities and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of a travel insurance policy varies from traveller to traveller because various factors affect the amount payable.

At Cover-More, we consider a number of factors when calculating the total amount payable. The following is a guide on these key factors, how they combine and how they may impact the assessment of risk and therefore the premium paid:

  • Area: higher risk areas cost more.
  • Departure date and trip duration: the longer the period until you depart and the longer your trip duration, the higher the cost may be.
  • Age: higher risk age groups cost more.
  • Plan: International Comprehensive+, which provides more cover, costs more than International Comprehensive or Domestic.
  • Excess: the higher the excess the lower the cost.
  • Cruise cover: additional premium applies.
  • Cancellation cover: on some policies you can choose your own level of cancellation cover. The more cancellation cover you require, the higher the cost may be.
  • Adding cover for Existing Medical Conditions and pregnancy (where available): additional premium may apply if a medical assessment is completed and cover is accepted by us.
  • Options to vary cover (where available): additional premium applies.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Product Disclosure Statement to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may impact your travel plans. By purchasing travel insurance with cancellation cover prior to departure, your policy can help by providing cover for the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of overseas medical treatment, lost passports, and personal items while you’re travelling.

The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval. To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as medical reports, itemised medical bills or police reports to confirm the incident occurred.

However, at Cover-More, if our customer becomes ill overseas, they can also contact our 24-Hour Emergency Assistance team for support and to seek approval for expensive medical bills to be paid directly by us to the medical care provider/s instead.

Always read the Product Disclosure Statement before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

What does – and doesn’t – travel insurance cover?

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the  Product Disclosure Statement  before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated if claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including cancellation, pre-existing medical conditions, theft or loss of belongings, adventure sports, COVID-19 scenarios and more.

For full details of the exclusions within our Cover-More travel insurance plans, consult the  Product Disclosure Statement  .

When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

The best time to purchase travel insurance is as soon as a trip is booked, as this can increase protection. When purchased ahead of time, a Cover-More customer can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the 21-day cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before departing on the trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made where cancellation cover is added to the policy.
