What Languages Are Spoken in Guangdong

Apart from Mandarin and English that are taught in schools, there are three major language families in Guangdong: Cantonese, the Teochew (Chaoshan) dialect, and the Hakka dialect .

Cantonese is spoken by around 67 million people in Guangdong. In Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital, 80% of people speak Cantonese. On the one hand, Cantonese inherits and retains some characteristics of ancient Chinese, on the other hand, it also absorbs some southern dialects, these dialects are quite different from Mandarin, Chaoshan dialect and Hakka dialect.

The Chaoshan area dialect is mainly spoken in the southeastern area of Guangdong around Chaozhou and Shantou . Geographically, it is closer to Fujian Province than to Guangzhou and is a Minnan (South Fujian) dialect.

Compared with Teochew (Chaoshan) dialect, Hakka, another minority language in Guangdong, is closer to Cantonese, and is concentrated around Meizhou (Mei County) in the northeast, though the most famous Hakka people live across the border in Fujian.

  In 2007, the value of our brand “Nanhu Travel • Western Holidays” was approximately 2 Billion RMB, per evaluation by China Guangzhou Brand Value Forum. Our self-developed brand “Western Holidays” was granted as “Best Tourist Brand to West China”. Nanhu Travel has built up long-term relationship with numerous scenic attractions in Sichuan and Yunnan Province, which designate Nanhu Travel as their exclusive travel agency in Guangdong Province and Tier I authorized dealer. Nanhu Travel has been one of the Top Ten travel agencies nationwide since 2009.

  Nanhu Travel is also considered as the first travel agency directly investing in scenic attractions in China. Nanhu Travel has invested and managed 15 major tourist attractions, including Deqing Panlong Xia, Huaiji Yan Yan, Zhongshan Zhan Yuan, some of which became the Top 500 modern industry in Guangdong Province, and were granted as the showcase in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City. Nanhu Travel’s new project, Wangzi Mountain Resort is under construction and expected to operate in early 2016.

  In 2006, Nanhu Travel started its outbound tour operation. In order to build the most professional outbound tourism brand in China, Nanhu Travel set up its outbound expert team in Hong Kong, consisting of Hong Kong’s top tourism specialists. In 2008, Nanhu Travel had the first direct charter flight to Maldives, and have kept two flights per week since then. Nanhu Travel delivered more than 12,000 tourists to Maldives during 2008, approximately 10% of the total Chinese tourists in Maldives in that year. After our direct charter flights to Maldives, China became the biggest source for Maldives’ tourism. Since 2009, Nanhu Travel has been successfully arranged charter flights to Phuket, Bali, Koh Samui, and Langkawi Island, and added three new destinations in 2010 for charter flights, including Cebu, Sabah, and Taiwan Penghu Bay. In 2013, Nanhu Travel added charter flights from Chengdu to Shenyang to Vancouver. Nanhu Travel’s charter flights program arranges approximately one thousand flights every year, resulting in the growth rate of 120% in Nanhu Travel outbound business.

  In 2013, Nanhu divided its business into five divisions: “Perfect Tour” “Taiwan Holiday”, “New Zealand and Australia Champions Tour”, “Europe Champions Tour” and “AMC Tour”, which will improve the penetration in each target market. With a decade of experiences in outbound tour operation, Nanhu Travel gains the biggest market shares in short-tour market, and one-third market shares in long-tour market. In 2014, we generated revenue of approximately 3 billion RMB and the number of tourists exceeded 3 million. We were the number one in Guangdong Province with respect to the quantity of tourists and groups.

  • Travel surge continues as festival spurs demand

  Dragon Boat Festival, which in 2009 became the first Chinese holiday inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, concluded with traditional festivities that added vibrancy to popular tourist destinations.

  Figures from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism showed a 6.3-percent year-on-year increase in domestic tourism during the three-day holiday period, which started on Saturday. Over 110 million tourist visits were recorded, generating about 40.4 billion yuan ($5.57 billion) in tourism revenue, an 8.1-percent rise compared with last year.

  Travel agencies noted a slight decrease in overall crowds this year due to the scheduling overlap with China's crucial college entrance examination, or gaokao, which was held from Friday to Monday.

  However, destinations known for their traditional Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, particularly dragon boat races, remained popular.

  "Guangdong province, renowned for its long history of dragon boat racing, saw a doubling of online searches for tour packages during the holiday," reported travel portal Qunar.

  Beyond the thrilling races, the festival is celebrated through various customs and activities, including preparing zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings), hanging mugwort for good health, and consuming medicinal liquor for blessings.

  Shi Yuanyuan, a 28-year-old resident of Shenzhen, Guangdong, shared her experience.

  "We brought our 3-year-old son to witness the dragon boat races in Foshan, another city in Guangdong. He was mesmerized by the boats. While he may not grasp the historical significance yet, experiencing the festive spirit and team energy is valuable," she said.

  According to travel platform Tuniu, the most popular domestic destinations during the holiday were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou in Guangdong, Nanjing in Jiangsu province, and Chongqing.

  Shorter travel times due to the merely three-day holiday also enticed Chinese tourists to explore short-distance overseas options. "Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and South Korea were top choices due to their flight times," reported Fliggy, an online travel agency. Cross-border cruises also experienced a surge in popularity, with bookings jumping 14-fold year-on-year.

  Qunar highlighted the cost-effectiveness of traveling abroad during the Dragon Boat Festival, compared with the upcoming peak summer season.

  "International flight prices dropped 20 percent year-on-year, and overseas hotel rates remained around 70 percent of what they typically are in July and August," it said, adding that sales for international flights departing during the holiday increased more than 60 percent compared with last year.
