The Ultimate Guide to the ABC Islands

Herein, the best lodging and dining options in Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

Karel's Beach Bar

The 20-minute flights between Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire don't always go smoothly, and there's no ferry service among the islands or to Venezuela. Our advice? Pick one of the ABCs–two max. For a standard-issue tropical getaway, the clear choice is Aruba: Nearly every hotel along the gorgeous leeward beaches is a good one, and there are enough distractions to avoid a sun-induced coma. The more variegated choice is Curaçao, where you can mix it up with a fine beach hotel, a lively city scene, excellent diving, and the Sea Aquarium (one of the best in the Caribbean). Bonaire is sleepier and less developed than the other two, but if you're serious about underwater sports, there is no contest: It's a notch that you simply must have on your belt–the one that straps the diving knife to your calf. For the scuba crowd, an active week in Bonaire's marine park followed by a few indulgent nights on the town in Curaçao would be a great trip.

Road signs are rare, so for exploring beyond the beach, leave the driving to Yoka van der Horst, a charming native with an air-conditioned minivan (568-6909; two-hour tour, $35 per person). A convenient public coach connects Oranjestad with hotels along the coast; it becomes part of the party after cocktail-fueled nights out.

The country code for Aruba is 297.

The high-rise area along Palm Beach is full of brand-name hotels and restaurants, swim-up bars, reggae bands, casinos, and water sports. The Hyatt Regency 's slide and waterfall connect three levels of pools (586-1234; doubles, $580-$830).

On Eagle Beach, serene Bucuti caters to honeymooners (583-1100; doubles, $271-$437). The Dutch Colonial-style Amsterdam Manor , also on Eagle, has a kitchen that delivers to your beach chair (527-1100; doubles, $189-$325). Each of Cunucu Arubiano 's three casitas has a terrace from which you can feed the donkeys that wander over from the sanctuary next door (733-2522; doubles, $165).

Inland, Gasparito has a folkloric-farmhouse feel and fine local cuisine–spiced chicken meets Dutch cheese (Gasparito 3; 586-7044; entrées, $19-$30). Madame Janette does a mean rack of lamb (Cunucu Abou 37; 587-0184; entrées, $26-$39). Indo Restaurant promises bargain Surinamese lunches (Noord 17; 586-3611; lunch entrées, $5-$12).

In Oranjestad, Eet Café the Paddock has perhaps the Caribbean's biggest burger (L. G. Smith Blvd. 13; 583-2334; entrées, $6-$12). The Flying Fishbone serves nicely done seafood at tables on a quiet beach (Savaneta 344; 584-2506; entrées, $24-$59).

On Bonaire you need wheels. Since the island has more than 80 dive sites, most folks rent a small truck with tank racks on the back. As non-divers, we did fine with a tiny Twingo.

The country code for Bonaire is 599.

The Harbour Village Beach Club is a lovely compound on a good beach, with full dive services, a restaurant, and a spa (717-7500; doubles, $275-$365). Both the Eden Beach Resort (717-6720; doubles, $120-$165) and Captain Don's Habitat (717-8290; doubles, $150) have units in a range of sizes, many with ocean views, facing a pool.

Though a bit small and shabby, Kralendijk contributes to the ABCs' reputation as a culinary crossroads. On the main street, the Mona Lisa Bar & Restaurant has a French menu, an esteemed chef, and sidewalk tables. The steak salad with goat cheese was superb; ditto the apple turnover with cinnamon ice cream (Kaya Grandi 15; 717-8718; entrées, $20-$30). At La Guernica , on the waterfront, the strawberry soup and the shrimp salad with melon were particularly good (Kaya Bonaire 4c; 717-5022; entrées, $20-$25). Sit on the dock at the well-known Zeezicht Seaside Bar and Restaurant and order from one of three kitchens under the same ownership: a landmark fish restaurant, a steak house, and a Japanese place–ideal if everyone in your party isn't in the same culinary mood (Kaya J.N.E. Craane 12; 717-8434; entrées, $10-$22). Karel's Beach Bar , right next door, has long been a spot for watching the scene.

The truest sign that Willemstad is an urban center is the challenge of parking –if you're staying in or near town, use taxis. But to explore the picture-perfect beaches and historic landhuizen –and they are worth a visit–rent a car.

The country code for Curaçao is 599-9.

In Willemstad, the Hotel Kurá Hulanda 's buildings are tucked amid the cobbled streets (434-7700; doubles, $275-$370). Queen Beatrix prefers the Avila , added, wing by wing, to the old Governor's Mansion (461-4377; doubles, $230-$280). Baoase is the island's hippest resort, with Balinese-style rooms and an upbeat staff (461-1799; doubles, $350-$575). The wheelchair- and family-friendly Dolphin Suites (465-2700; doubles, $135-$185) and the classic Caribbean Lions Dive Resort in front of it (434-8888; doubles, $196-$273) are between Mambo Beach and the Sea Aquarium (5999-461-6666).

Near Willemstad, the Floris Suite Hotel is a tribute to Dutch design (462-6111; suites, $145-$195). At the island's western tip, Lodge Kurá Hulanda is stylish and comfortable (839-3600; doubles, $230-$255). The new Hyatt Regency has a striking neo-Palladian lobby, a gelato store, and a golf course that winds amid the cactus-studded hills (840-1234; doubles, $239-$309).

In Willemstad, which has excellent restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, we went for tables with views. La Bahia has standard fare but terrific harbor panoramas (Breederstraat; 462-7400; entrées, $20-$52). The best seats at Gouverneur de Rouville , which serves keshi yená (stuffed cheese), are on the terrace facing Punda (De Rouvilleweg 9; 462-5999; entrées, $13-$28). Above the sea at Fort Amsterdam, in the Waterfront Arches complex, Dal Toro serves good Italian food, but slowly (461-3482; entrées, $18-$35). Along the beach, we liked Blues , on the pier of the Avila Hotel (461-4377; entrées, $20-$42). In the Kurá Hulanda enclave, Jaipur does a fine lobster salad and pad thai (434-7700; entrées, $13-$40).

The airy hilltop Indonesian Tempo Doeloe , near the Floris Hotel, cooks up a mind-boggling rijsttafel (La Vista Resort, Piscaderaweg; 461-2881; rijsttafel, $27-$38 per person). For lip-smacking Surinamese-Indian, drop by Vishna's Roti Place (Fisherman's Harbour; 767-5085; entrées, $8-$10). Mid island, Landhuis Daniel serves Dutch pancakes at breakfast, lunch, and dinner; has a breezy patio; and rents out small, basic rooms for $50 to $70 a night (Weg naar Westpunt; 864-8400; entrées, $10-$17).

**Willemstad'**s historic districts are the focus of restoration efforts and include these seventeenth- and eighteenth-century merchants' houses on Handelskade, in the Punda area.

Ft Lauderdale is a city of islands held together by an intricate web of canals, rivers, bays and waterways hundreds of miles long. Needless to say, boating is a favorite city pastime, whether zooming along on a speedboat, enjoying a fishing charter, or cruising the coastline by yacht. Beautiful homes of every size and style make up the bulk of this primarily residential area. By the beach, a leisurly stroll can be taken along the new landscaping wavewall design of the beachfront promenade. But this city is anything but sedate. Once a spring break hot spot, the town still has an energetic and colorful nightlife. Nearby, charming Laudrdale-By-the-Sea is home to one of the only living coral reefs in the US accesible from shore. Las Olas Boulevard, a shoppers paradise, is the chic new shopping and trendy dining area of downtown. If sports are more your inclination, dozens of golf courses and hundreds of public parks allow you to absorb the great Florida outdoors. Cultural arts are also popular. Water taxis bring theater-goers from throughout the city to the Performing Arts Center on the water.

Curacao is a long, arid, and generally flat island, stretching some 40 miles (64 km) from southeast to northwest, at much the same north-south angles as it's sister islands in the ABC group (Aruba to the west and Bonaire to the east). The island is about 10 miles (16 km) at it's widest point, and the area is about 180 square miles (472 square km), making it the largest island in the Netherlands Antilles group. The coastline along the south is irregular, peppered with small bays and inlets, including the spectacular bays and beaches at the west end of the island. The largest bays are located along the central-east and east end of the island, where you'll find the capital and major port of Willemstad. Most of Curacao's 170,000 residents live in and around this historic town. The long north coast of the island, buffeted by constant northeast trade winds, is characterized by a rough coasthne, limestone cliff formations set on top of eons-old volcanic rock, and weather-beaten terrain. It is generally less inhabited than the south coast, but you will find smaller villages and many of the island's famous landhuis, or old plantation house, structures here. The west end of the island is also characterized by expansive, hilly terrain, most of it encompassed by Christoffel Park. The 4,500-acre (1,820-hectare) park contains Mt. Christoffel, at 1,239 feet (377 meters) the highest elevation on Curacao. The east end of the island comprises flat and mostly barren plain, with few settlements and some secondary roads weaving to and from its coastal inlets. With an average 20 inches (510 mm) of rainfall yearly, Curacao is generally a dry island. There are few standing bodies of water save some saline ponds, and most of the island's water is provided by a large desalinization plant found on the south coast.

Aruba's path to the present day is marked by the mystery of ochre-colored rock drawings left behind by island shamans, the enterprising spirit of European adventurers and settlers and the diverse experiences and traditions brought by the many nationalities that have since sought out the island as either a new home or temporary resting place. The look of the people, the languages they speak and the innate hospitality that manifests itself in the Aruban psyche is the result of a multi-cultural mix that reflects a rich past.

Over the last two decades, Bonaire has consistently ranked as the finest snorkeling and scuba diving destination in the Caribbean. A major reason for this prominence is the island's diligent stewardship of its marine resources -- all of the waters off Bonaire's coast have been legally protected since 1979, and it shows. But there is plenty more to do here. The unusually steady trade winds that wash over the island create ideal conditions for world-class windsurfing, and the sere beauty of its semi-desert landscape is home to an outlandish assortment of wildlife. Iguanas meditatively toast themselves atop the desert rock formations of Washington Slagbaai, while vast orange-pink clouds of flamingoes drift across bone-white salt flats. Divi-divi trees bend into surreal sculptures of the wind itself, and towering cacti stand as reminders of the Caribbean's diverse ecology.

Visiting these 6 gulf countries to soon become possible with the latest multi-nation visa

As reported earlier, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) unveiled a novel tourist visa initiative, dubbed ‘GCC Grand Tours,’ which is akin to the Schengen visa. This unified visa will allow travellers to explore all six Gulf nations and extend their stays beyond 30 days. This strategic move is geared towards bolstering tourism and streamlining travel throughout the GCC region.

Comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, the GCC, also known as the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, has introduced the GCC Grand Tours visa to attract a broader tourist base by facilitating visits to multiple countries within the region. This unified visa is poised to significantly boost the Gulf's tourism sector, and help in attracting a higher number of hotel guests and solidifying the region's status as a premier destination for both local and international travellers.

With regard to this, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates, disclosed the initiative following a panel discussion featuring key representatives from various GCC tourism authorities. With the joint visa plan receiving approval from the GCC in November 2023, preparations are currently underway for its imminent launch. Officials in the know-how are optimistic that the new multi-nation visa could be rolled out later this year or in early 2025, marking a significant milestone in facilitating seamless travel within the Gulf region.

Newcastle United's post-season trip to Australia has been described as "madness" and "crazy" by club legend Alan Shearer, the former England captain.

The Magpies headed for the airport as soon as they finished their English Premier League campaign on Sunday at Brentford's West London stadium, conveniently less than 10 miles from Heathrow Airport. 

If that was a short trip, the journey that followed was anything but: a near-24 hour flight to Melbourne where Newcastle will face Tottenham at the MCG on Wednesday .

That is followed by Friday's match at Docklands against an A-League All Star side.

Many of the players involved will have to report for international duty not long after they return home and Shearer said on the BBC's Match of the Day highlights programme: "Can you imagine if you're a player who is playing in either the Copa America or Euro 2024 having to do that? Madness. Crazy."

The Premier League's all-time record goalscorer, who later managed hometown club Newcastle, added: "I wouldn't be happy at all.

"It's crazy for Newcastle to go and play Spurs there on Wednesday night and then another game."

Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier, who is expected to be in England's Euros squad, had already questioned the timing of the trip.

"It's not ideal because it's a tournament year," he said.

"I understand why the club are doing it. I've done it at Tottenham and [Atletico] Madrid but from my own experience of it, in a tournament year it's not ideal."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has said he will rotate players and use all the 29-man travelling party — which includes Australia's Garang Kuol — across the two games.

A number of notable players were not travelling, mainly because of injury.

Recently capped England international Anthony Gordon missed out for that reason along with Fabien Schär, Sven Botman, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Jamaal Lascelles. 

Italy's Sandro Tonali did not make the trip as he is serving a 10-month ban for betting on matches while goalkeepers Martin Dúbravka and Loris Karius are set for moves away from the club. 

As a result, many little-known youngsters will get playing time alongside international stars such as Trippier, Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak. 

"It is difficult if you are just going on holiday, let alone playing so soon after landing. That will be the trickiest thing for us," said coach Eddie Howe.

Tottenham have been more relaxed about their trip, in part due to having an Australian coach in Ange Postecoglou, who will be returning home to Melbourne, but mainly due to having had a less-demanding season.

"Our situation is a bit different from Newcastle's. They've had a European season, Champions League, it's been a big season. We haven't," Postecoglou said.

"I certainly wouldn't have allowed it to happen if we were in Europe this year and had a bigger game schedule. I probably would have said no to it.

"And I don't think the club would have expected us to go. If we're in Europe next year, I don't think you'll be seeing this happen.

"I don't think it's ideal. But I think each situation is unique. For us, on the back of our season, to play one more game two days after the end of the season, there is substance to it for us."

Spurs are also missing players through injury, notably Richarlison, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, plus Timo Werner who is getting married. 

But skipper Son Heung-min will nevertheless lead a strong party that features all but Argentine World Cup winner Romero of the 11 starters in Sunday's 3-0 win at Sheffield United.

The match follows a report last year from player's union FIFPRO (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels) that said the game was facing "dangerous levels of fixture congestion" and that more needed to be done to protect players.

Last month, the Football Association provoked the ire of the lower reaches of the football pyramid by scrapping replays in its flagship tournament, the FA Cup, to allay fears predominantly from teams that play in European competition — although such measures appear somewhat moot when those clubs then arrange overseas tours.

"The reforms of the two major tournaments will ultimately increase the number of games played by top players who could conceivably feature in both," the Fifpro said.

"This poses a threat to the wellbeing of players who are already pushed to their limit with the current international match calendar."

Dobrý den, byl to výborně připravený zájezd (29.12-2.1.2024) viděli jsme za tu poměrně krátkou dobu neuvěřitelně mnoho věcí a největší díky patří naší skvělé průvodkyni Šárce, výklad jako u některých cestovek nebyl nudný, nebyl přehnaný informacemi, že se dali krásně vstřebat, vše dokázala srozumitelně vysvětlit a tak pozitivní člověk! Velké díky patří také řidičům (Ondra a Vítek), lepší řidiče nikde nezažijete a to, že cestujeme často. Děkujeme za krásný strávený čas v Paříži na Silvestra.

Shania Twain on how she found forgiveness for her ex-husband following his affair

"It's his mistake. Not my mistake."

Shania Twain is opening up about how she found forgiveness for her ex-husband Robert "Mutt" Lange.

Twain and Lange were married in 1993 and remained together until they split in 2008 following Lange's affair with Twain's close friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Twain has been married to her former friend's then-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, since 2011.

In a new interview on the May 29 episode of the "Great Company with Jamie Laing" podcast, Twain shared how she came to a place of not having any hate for Lange.

"We're talking about letting go and how difficult it can be to let go," she said. "Forgiveness is in the family of letting go. But forgiveness, more specifically for me anyway, is not really … it's not about forgetting necessarily."

"It's about understanding the other person, and that might mean that they're, you know, wrong. Maybe you believe forever that whatever they did was wrong…," she trailed off.

Twain then began explaining how she found forgiveness for her late stepfather, Jerry Twain, whom she has accused of abusing her as a child , saying she has "totally" forgiven him.

Twain's stepfather and her mother, Sharon, both died in a car accident in 1987.

"I understand that he wasn't well, that you don't act certain ways, you know, unless there's something wrong with you, there's something wrong with your stability" she explained.

Twain said that instead of hating him, she "feel[s] bad that he had those problems."

"Its very hard to hate or not be able to forgive somebody that you believe," she added. "He's a human being that deserves empathy and understanding. I think we all do, you know?"

Shifting back to Lange's infidelity, the singer said, "Do I hate my ex-husband for making a mistake? No. It's his mistake. Not my mistake."

"[I'm] so sad for him that he made such a great mistake that he has to live with," she continued. "That's not my weight."

Twain and Lange are parents to their 22-year-old son, Eja.
