20+ Apayao Tourist Spots (UPDATED): Best Places to See

Learn more about the beautiful Apayao tourist spots in this article, featuring not only what the province is known for but also its off-beaten destinations.

Apayao province is considered the last ecological frontier of the Cordillera region as vast primary dipterocarp forests cover most of its landscape. In fact, the critically-endangered Philippine monkey-eating Eagle has recently been sighted in its remote forests.

Apayao, therefore, presents one of the best opportunities for ecotourism development. Ecotourism, if properly done, can boost the economic development of Apayao while protecting its natural environment and local culture.

Indeed, Apayao offers countless hidden natural wonders. It is a sure hit for those looking to experience a rustic and simple life in the wilderness.

Without further ado, here are the must-see tourist attractions in Apayao you should not miss.

Behold Apayao Province Tourist Spots

1. dupag rock formation.

Dupag Rock Formation in Luna. One of the tourist spots in Apayao.

Dupag Rock Formation is a cluster of jagged limestone boulders that measure around 7 to 8 feet high. Climbing to the peaks presents a real challenge especially if you are not an ardent hiker. But surely, the thrill and the wonderful view atop will make up for that.

Due to the rough and sharp texture of the boulders, visitors/tourists must wear proper footwear and protective gear. The highest peak is known as Father Rock. It provides an entrancing view of the surrounding fields, valleys, forests, and rivers.

The topography of Dupag Rock made it a favourite hiding place for the locals and insurgents during the wars and uprisings. It, therefore, plays a major historical role in the area. It is now one of the most featured tourist spots in Luna, Apayao province.

  • Location: Luna, Apayao
  • Trekking Time: 30-45 minutes
  • Status: Closed

2. Bayugao Falls

Bayugan Falls is one of the famous Apayao tourist spots.

Bayugao Falls are a series of mini-waterfalls with naturally-built pools. Their cool and crystal-clear waters cast a rejuvenating sight complementing the surrounding forests.

If you’re up for a thrill, try jumping from one of the surrounding boulders toward the pool. Bayugao Falls is one of the most visited Apayao tourist destinations.

  • Jump-Off Point: Brgy Turod
  • Trekking Time: 30 minutes

3. Lussok Cave & Underground River

Lusok cave in Luna, Apayao is one of the famed Apayao tourist spots.

Containing several chambers, the Lussok Cave showcases nature at its best. It has a wide opening, reminiscent of a cathedral’s dome.

To get inside the cave, one needs to ride a boat. Yes, it has an underground river, like that of Palawan. The view of the river itself is breathtaking with fresh and pristine waters emanating from the cave.

Once inside, you’ll catch sight of stunning stalactite and stalagmite rock formations. One could simply wonder how such beauty formed. Numerous bats also inhabit the cave, indicating the rich biodiversity.

To date, this is one of the most popular tourist spots in Apayao province.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy Dagupan, Luna, Apayao
  • Open: 8 am to 4pm
  • Entrance Fee: 120 php/head, 25 php – Parking Fee

4. Calanasan Philippine Eagle Sanctuary

Calanasan forest is one of the best Apayao tourist spots

The vast lowland forests of Calanasan host the iconic Philippine-Monkey Eating eagle, a critically-endangered species. Thus, Apayao provides a home for the continuing survival of the species. So far, there are around 25 eagles documented in the area.

Calanasan’s forests also host a rich diversity of other flora and fauna species including the Northern Luzon cloud rat. Giant Rafflesia flowers can also be spotted. In many areas, giant dipterocarp trees such as lawaan dominate. They can be as tall as a 10-story building. It would even take around 20 people hurdling together to circle their massive buttresses.

These keystone species must be protected from both legal and illegal loggers. After all, they play a crucial role in both the natural environment and the local communities. Fortunately, the local authorities are taking the initiative to do just that.

5. Gololan Falls

Gololan Falls of Kabugao. One of the tourist spots in Apayao.

Gololan Falls cascades for more than 33 meters. On sunny days, it projects a small rainbow, thanks to rock cliffs that trap the sunlight on the bottom. The falls’ waters carved a deep and wide pool. This is a perfect spot for swimming. The surrounding boulders provide an ideal place for jumping or diving.

To get here, one must hike for some 30-45 minutes. Take note. This is a downhill trek. But along the way, nature’s surprises such as orchids, birds’ calls, and trees’ rustling would constantly relieve you. Among the tourist spots in Apayao, this one must definitely make it to your bucket list.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Brgy EKB, Kabugao, Apayao

6. Abulog/Apayao River

Apayao River. One of the tourist spots of Apayao.

Apayao River traverses all the municipalities of Apayao except Conner. It extends for more than 181 kilometers, making it the longest river in the said province. It emanates from the hinterlands of Calanasan and grows bigger as it passes through the different municipalities.

Apayao River ranks as one of the cleanest rivers in the country and one of the largest river systems. It provides a home to a plethora of marine species. In fact, big fishes can be seen swimming. Hardwood trees and dense forests also grow on some parts of its banks.

In addition, this river can be tapped for whitewater rafting activities. Aside from the forests, visitors can catch sight of beautiful waterfalls spilling on them. Interestingly, it is the Isneg’s culture called Lapat which preserved the beauty and bounty of the river.

7. Mt. Kilang

Mt. Kilang. One of the Tourist Spots in Apayao.

Mt. Kilang rises to more than 1, 656 meters above sea level (MASL). This makes it one of the highest peaks of Northern Apayao. It can be viewed from the boundary of both Apayao and Ilocos Norte.

The best time to view its majesty is from 4 am to 5 am. However, if you are looking for a challenge, you can try assaulting its summit.

To get to Mt. Kilang’s peak, you need to trail on dense mossy forests. On some parts of the trails, you can catch sight of amazing rock formations. Some of these are jagged so take extra caution to avoid wounds or skirmishes.

The trek takes hours from the usual trailheads. However, clear sunny days would reward you with breathtaking views of the vast forests of Apayao and the mountain ranges of Ilocos. A sea of cloud formations also frequently appear.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Solsolano-Apayao Rd., Calanasan, Apayao
  • Height: 1,656 MASL

8. Maton River

Maton River is one of off-beaten Apayao tourist spots.

Pudtol, just like Calanasan, hosts vast areas of dipterocarp forests. These forests feed numerous brooks and streams which then join to form the locally-famed Maton River.

Maton River is now creating a fuss among the tourist spots in Apayao. In fact, it’s more than a favorite getaway for the local communities. It is now a rising come-on of Pudtol.

The river features numerous pools. These are fit for swimming and boating. Along the lower Maton, there is a favorite pool with a small cascade. Its waters are cool and crystal-clear.

There are numerous rock formations in the area. These are ideal spots for jumping. Oh, the highest of these is a 15-foot outcrop. This is a must-try for every daredevil.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Brgy Maton, Pudtol, Apayao
  • Entrance Fee: Free
  • Guide Fee: Donation

9. Girgira Falls

Girgira Falls is one of off-beaten Apayao tourist spots.

Considered as the biggest waterfall within the municipality, Girgira Falls measures around 30 feet high. The pristine falls of Girgira emanate from Mt. Magitalan.

Because of its huge water volume, the falls carved a pool that is twice as big as an Olympic size swimming pool. It unfurls successive falls, stretching as deep as 30 meters or more.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Calanasan, Apayao
  • Trekking Time: 2 hours

10. Macota Underground River

luna apayao tourist spots

Macota Underground River complements the more popular Lussok Underground Cave. It also boasts of equally-interesting features. To get inside the cave, you need to take a boat until a point where the deep level ends. From here, hike your way to get deeper into the cave.

Inside, you’ll find imposing stalactite and stalagmite rock formations including a waterfall. The cave’s underground river teems with various marine life such as eels, fishes, and shrimps.

Along with other tourist spots in Apayao province, this fragile ecosystem warrants protection and sustainable management.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Luna, Apayao

11. Mt. Solo

Mt Solo is one of off-beaten Apayao tourist spots.

Mt. Solo towers over 1,336 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in Apayao. From here, one can view the extensive forest cover of Pudtol and its neighboring municipalities.

It takes hours to days of a strenuous hike to reach its summit, depending on where you are coming from. Tourism is not yet fully established in the area. That is why trails are not well-established. In fact, only a few locals and hunters were able to assault its summit.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Brgy Upper Maton, Pudtol; Brgy Lt. Balag, Kabugao

12. Purit Cave

luna apayao tourist spots

Purit cave has lower and upper chambers with vertical clearances of 6-8 feet high and 10-12 feet wide. There are not so many rock formations here. However, it serves as a sanctuary for numerous bats.

Guano deposits abound here. Thus, it is locally known as the “Bat Cave.” Before its mouth, there is a natural reception on the sides. Thick forests surround the cave. Purit Cave is one of the emerging Apayao tourist destinations/spots.

  • Location/Jump-off: Calanasan, Apayao

13. Anag-Sicapo Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary offers a thrilling and challenging adventure for nature lovers, mountaineers, or even biologists. It takes at least 10 hours of hike to get here.

Along the way, you’ll encounter various flora and fauna species such as deer, wild pigs, and hornbills. Who knows? You’ll even catch sight of the elusive Philippine eagles inhabiting its old-growth forests.

For those who are still up for a more extreme challenge, they can pursue their trek to Mt. Sicapo for another four hours. Hopefully, the local authorities continue to implement strict measures to protect and sustainably manage such resources.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Kabugao, Apayao

14. Agora Wildlife Sanctuary

luna apayao tourist spots

Agora Wildlife Sanctuary covers much of the landscape of Pudtol. It contains one of the most intact dipterocarp forests in Apayao. Unique flora and fauna species also thrive here.

The forests feed brooks and streams leading to the Apayao River. Locals say that the untamed jungles hide numerous gems such as limestone rock formations and uncharted caves. Different waterfalls can also be found here.

Unfortunately, logging activities, both large-scale and small-scale, are threatening the rich biodiversity of Agora. Thus, some locals developed initiatives aiming to curb destructive activities.

Indeed, it is important to preserve this sanctuary since it does not only protect wildlife species but also boost sustainable and community-based development.

  • Location/Jump-Off: Pudtol, Apayao
  • Special Feature: Home to the Philippine Monkey-Eating Eagle

15. Banselan Cave

Banselan Cave is one of off-beaten Apayao tourist spots.

Banselan Cave is one of the most famous tourist spots/destinations in Apayao province. From barangay Cupis proper, it takes around 30 minutes of a hike to get here.

The trail passes along the picturesque Bagumbong river. Three chambers with different magnificent stalagmites and stalactites formations compose the cave.

On one of these chambers, three mini-waterfalls can be found. Their pristine waters flow on crystalline boulders. Animals such as bats, crabs, rare spiders, and others also inhabit the cave.

Just like other caves in Apayao, this offers opportunities for spelunking, trekking, and even picnic activities.

6 Tourist Spots for Your APAYAO ITINERARY

luna apayao tourist spots

Apayao boasts of a dynamic landscape marked by pristine waterways, thriving old-growth forests, and subterranean wonders. In addition to this, as the home of the Isnag tribe, the province also celebrates a vibrant indigenous culture and noteworthy environmental conservation policies. A cultural practice called lapat , where a patch of land or body of water is declared off-limits for a certain period of time, has been incorporated into the province’s legislation, leading to places being declared as Protected Indigenous Areas. This allows the many wild places in its folds to continue to thrive and survive. Undoubtedly a system worthy of emulation all over the country.

Getting here is usually via a 12-hour bus ride from Florida Bus Terminal Cubao. Taking the sleeper bus is highly recommended. As of March 2019, the one-way fare is Php1350.

While it mostly remains unknown to many, intrepid travelers would be delighted at the treasures that Apayao plays host to. Aside from the historical and cultural destinations, the natural places are just extraordinary. If you are especially a sucker for the outdoors and incredible landscapes, this province would not disappoint. Should you plan a visit anytime soon, here are six activities to try.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Explore Lussok Cave

In Brgy. Dagupan in the town of Luna, there’s a 200-meter cave system called Lussok. Before being developed as a tourist destination, Japanese soldiers, as well as local rebels, used the cavern as a hideout. Now, its many rock formations can be enjoyed by everyone. Exploring the cave begins with a short boat ride across a clear river leading to the mouth of the cave. From the entrance, the rock-scrambling begins. Crouch, inch, and clamber through the cave while marveling at the numerous rock formations.

Take Some Instagram-worthy Photos at the Marag Hanging Bridge

A long hanging bridge hovers a crystalline river at the village of Marag in Luna. The bridge affords visitors a breathtaking 360-degree view of the mountain ranges and river system. The river below it is a favorite among locals – they can often be seen swimming or having a picnic here. Floating cottages are available for rent. You may join the locals and have your lunch here or just take a few moments to take some photos and enjoy the panoramic view.

Cruise through Manacota Underground River

Another cave system in Luna is Manacota, but compared to Lussok it is more river than a cave. Guests will go on a short trek to the mouth of the cave where they will board a boat that will charter them to the river. The water in the river is cool and surrounded by lush canopies. After passing a tunnel, guests will alight the boat and enjoy walking through the runnel, under thick canopies and up huge boulders. Be sure to take a dip in the cool waters of the river and let your weariness wash away.

Cool down at Gololan Falls

About an hour trek down through a thriving rainforest in the town of Kabugao would lead you to the 33-meter Gololan Falls. The raging water is slender and set on a sheet of mountain rock. It is picturesque and is definitely worth the one-hour jungle walk. Plus, once you see the gushing falls, it’ll be difficult not to take a dip into the azure basin below it.

Check out the Mataguisi Church Ruins

Dating to as far back as 1608, the Mataguisi Church Ruins in the town of Pudtol is one of the few mortar-and-brick structures remaining in the province. It stands as a reminder of the colorful past of the province and a testament to the outstanding architectural skills of the locals. Through the efforts of the local government, the ruins have been cared for and are being maintained. Mass is also regularly being conducted here.

Boulder-dive at the Maton River

Also in the town of Pudtol, Maton River is deemed as one of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines. Surrounded by trees and dotted by huge boulders, the river is a popular bathing spot for locals. Daring adventurers can often be seen clambering up the boulders and jumping into the clear waters. Take time to wade in the clear, turquoise-emerald waters to shake off the day’s heat. If you’re up for it, you may join in the locals for a round of boulder-diving.

Where to Stay in Apayao

Apayao may be a less-traveled destination but there are already plenty of accommodations available. In the town of Luna, the local government runs its own lodge. There is also a resort called Star Jewel which is right beside the main thoroughfare where buses and other public transportation pass by. Furthermore, Luna also has a lot of commercial establishments so making it a home base is ideal. However, if you want to venture further, Pudtol would be a great place to stay, too. It’s a nice town to explore especially if you’re into unspoiled wild places. RDJ Farm is an affordable and value-for-money place to stay when in this town.

For those who are also exploring Mountain Province, Sagada is a good base. There are lots of accommodation and dining options, good for families and solo (or duo) travelers. Before heading back to Manila, another favorite stop is Baguio City in Benguet. This has become a highly urbanized area in the region. If you plan to stay a night or two in Baguio, here are some of the top hotels as rated by Agoda users, in no particular order.

Travel Guide: Lussok Cave and Underground River

Table of Contents

L una, Apayao, Philippines — Somewhere between the mountains and the sea of the great Cordillera Administrative Region are quaint quiet towns—little treasure finds tucked hidden in its vast expanse, like Luna in the province of Apayao.

Looking back, it has been more than a decade since the last time I set foot in the province. I was surprised to see a lot of positive developments and the roads are much better than other provinces in Luzon and despite being one of the lesser-known tourist destinations in the region.

Roadtrip to Apayao from Cagayan Valley

To me, it was an impressive feat how local officials have been pushing their tourism promotion efforts to help the livelihood of its local community.

A landlocked area in the Philippines that borders Cagayan to the north and east, Abra and Ilocos Norte to the west, and Kalinga to the south, Apayao is naturally traversed by rivers and is home to several natural attractions frequented mostly by local backpackers. It is considered Cordillera’s last nature frontier because its people still maintain their peaceful coexistence with the natural environment.

Nestled in its northernmost part of Apayao is the municipality of Luna, where the Lussok Crystal Cave and Underground River is emerging as an eco-tourism hotspot.

Lussok Cave Visitors Center

Our Media group and the rest of the Grand North Luzon Caravan participants have just visited the St. Philomene Church in the town of Alcala in the northern province of Cagayan. Our next stop was strategically the nearby municipality of Luna in Apayao. It was almost sundown when we arrived in the area, and we proceeded to Lussok Cave Visitors Center for a late lunch and activity orientation.

cultural group of the Provincial Government of Apayao

Upon arrival at the area, we were welcomed by the Provincial Tourism Officer, Ms. Rebecca Mamba, and Apayao Board Member, Ms. Kyle Bulut . We were also welcomed by the Provincial Government of Apayao cultural group, who performed their traditional dance [taddo’] and even invited some of us to dance with them.

PHILTOA delegation at Lussok Visitors Center in Luna Apayao

Unknown to most of us, their performance is just the beginning of a one-of-a-kind journey we were about to take part in.

About Lussok Underground River and Crystal Cave

On the rocky slope of Barangay Dagupan, one will find this multi-chamber cave with centuries-old stalactites and stalagmites embedded with crystals that dance and shine with the tiniest reflection of light, thus its other name, the Crystal Caves.

TRIVIA: Lussok means a hole in the Ilocano language. The cave was named as such due to a whole that provides light inside the cave.

A short walk to the river

Accessible through an underground river system, you can navigate through the calm, placid river and onto the picturesque maze via boat without outriggers (or katig).

River Cruise to Lussok Underground River and Cave

The cave is a 20-minute drive away from Marag Valley. A short walk from the visitor’s center leads to the river cruise jump-off point. The tour starts with a brief 200-meter boat ride on the enchanting azure waters.

Mouth of the Underground River

During the 10-15 minute river cruise, we were in awe of lush vegetation, crystal clear waters, and the overall serenity of the place. Glimmering limestone formations reflected the light seeping through the formation and welcomed us just before we reached the mouth of the cave.

inside Lussok Underground River

Inside you will see various formations of stalactites and stalagmites much like the ones in Puerto Princesa in Palawan. There are formations depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, vegetables, fruits, and faces that were all pointed out to us by our trained boatmen guides.

Spelunking inside Lussuk Cave photo by Elias Russel Bulut

For thrill-seekers, you can also go on a one-hour guided spelunking activity up to its vertical cave.

Fees and Operating Hours

Located in Brgy. Dagupan in Luna, the Lussok Cave, and Underground River is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is 120 Php/head, and the parking fee is Php25. It is also required to hire an accredited tour guide for safety.

Best time to visit Apayao

The rainy season in Apayao starts from June until November, although most tourist attractions are still open during this season. If you want to make the most out of your trip, the ideal months to explore the province are between March and May when the weather is dry.

About Luna, Apayao

Luna is a second-class municipality in the province of Apayao in the Cordillera Administrative Region. Its former name was Macatel, which was then changed to Luna by the town’s founding father, the Ilocano explorer Antonino Barroga from Dingras, Ilocos Norte.

Tourist Attractions in Luna Apayao

How to get to Luna, Apayao

The fastest way to get to Apayao is to book a flight with PAL or CEB to Tuguegarao City or Laoag City. The trip will take about an hour. From any of the abovementioned airports, vans, and jeepneys are bound for Luna, Apayao.

  • Rivera Transit Terminal in Mayon St, Quezon City

  • Florida Bus Terminal in Espana, Manila

River Cruise in Luna Apayao

Lussok Cave in Luna, Apayao

 alt=

If you’re going to visit Apayao, you shouldn’t miss Lussok Cave in the town of Luna in the northern part of the province. Luna is known as the gateway to Apayao’s many unique outdoor adventures.

But before I share with you my awesome experience at Lussok Cave and Underground River, let’s talk about Apayao first. I know, you might be asking, “Jon, where is Apayao?”

Lussok Cave Apayao

I will not judge you for not brushing up on your Philippine geography, LOL because I know for a fact that Apayao hasn’t been getting the attention it truly deserves. It is a reality that in spite of many popular and beautiful attractions in the Philippines, there are destinations that are yet to be uncovered. There are provinces like Apayao – not that well-known yet, but if you give it a chance, it will surely capture your hearts. Naks .

Apayao is part of the Cordillera Administrative Region , just like Ifugao and Benguet. With the popularity of the rice terraces in Banaue , it is important for many to know that there are still more to discover in the region like by traveling up north, there’s Apayao.

I remember when I was a kid, the province used to be called Kalinga-Apayao, until on February 14, 1995, it was split into two independent provinces. It was said that by the time when the world is celebrating love with their partners on Valentine’s day, Kalinga and Apayao are commemorating their break up. LOL.

One thing that I can assure you, Apayao is home of natural wonders – cliffs and underground rivers. Not to mention the food and culture that the province has preserved for the visitors to experience.

Apayao actually means “land of rivers” in the local language, which explains the province’s rich bodies of freshwater like underground rivers, waterfalls, and caves.

My Experience at Lussok Cave

It was the fourth day of our tour, as part of the PHILTOA Grand North Luzon Fun Caravan in cooperation with the Philippines Tourism Promotions Board. We finished our heritage tour in Tuguegarao that morning, ate some delicious Pancit Batil Patong, then off we traveled to Luna, Apayao to explore the Lussok Cave.

Lussok is an Ilocano word for hole. This refers to some holes inside the cave, which were actually visible when you’re in the underground river.

Lussok Cave Apayao

Dancing with Sir Cesar Cruz, PHILTOA President, with TPB and Tour Operators.

Lussok Cave Apayao

The tourism team also served a sumptuous lunch for us. Guests can actually relax and eat at the cottages and tables at the visitors’ area. These are just some of the amenities for tourists when they visit Lussok Cave.

The Underground River

It was time for adventure. We were grouped into 3 for the available boats. Each has a guide to explain and share stories about the underground river and cave. Of course, they were there to also secure the safety of the guests.

But I must say,  guides were trained to deliver more than they are required. They cracked jokes and hugot lines as we sailed through the river surrounded by lush forest until reaching the opening of the underground cave.

Lussok Cave Apayao

Mice and Sir Cesar Villanueva, TPB OIC, with the rest of the group.

Lussok Cave Apayao

Okay lang ba, Len? Haha

“Ako po ang inyong magiging ilaw, gabay sa loob ng cave.” Our guide said, which is true. LOL. He was the only one with a decent flashlight inside the cave, explaining and pointing out to glimmering limestones and shapes. It is helpful to use our imagination while inside the pitch-black underground river.

Stalactites are the limestone formations above, while those that formed from the ground are stalagmites. And do you know what happens when they finally reach one another? The stalactites and stalagmites? Our guide said, “sila po ay itinadhana,” (They are meant for each other.)  LOL! Yeah.  It was funny because the joke was corny. LOL! Our guide really made us smile.

Lussok Cave Apayao

The underground river is roughly about 200 meters. Though it is not as long as the popular underground rivers in the country, it has a natural beauty and charm of its own.

Tourists are reminded not to touch the glimmering limestones to protect its natural state. When inside, guests just have to enjoy the different limestone formations, the sounds of the fruit bats, and marvel at the faint streak of sunlight from the hole or lussok.

Lussok Cave Apayao

Spelunking and Cave Adventure

After exploring the underground river, adventurous travelers can choose to experience the cave adventure or spelunking.

Of course, looking at the steep rock formations to climb before even entering the mouth of the cave, you can assess if you can do this adventure or not. Okay? So if you feel that you couldn’t manage the physical activity needed for this, you can opt to hop on the boat back to the loading area.

For those want to this? You will be assisted by your guide. They will show and help you on where to step or which rocks to hold as you go through the adventure.

Honestly, this spelunking adventure is not for everybody. LOL. I’m serious. This is for thrill-seekers and adventurous travelers, you know, like me. LOL! Only a handful from our group decided to go for spelunking.

As a fat travel blogger, I am still in awe of how I was able to squeeze my huge self into those little holes. LOL. But it was a lot of fun. It was physically straining but it was fun. An experience that I will never forget in Apayao.

Inside the cave, the entertainment provided by our funny guide continued as he showed us more spots for a photo op as well as more interesting limestone formations like the ones similar to cactus, ice cream, and even lovers. LOL.

It was a bit more challenging because the rocks, the trail was muddy and slippery, so be sure to wear proper gear. Don’t be like us, like me, who was wearing tsinelas during the entire spelunking. LOL!

At the end of the adventure, all needed to overcome the steep and slippery trail coming out of the cave. And then, we all made it!

Lussok Cave Apayao

That’s Sir Noel Amata – our idol photographer.

But then, we all realized that it wasn’t the end of the adventure yet. We still need to trek in the mountains until reaching the hanging bridge. Whoah. What a day for all of us! But then again, we got our much-needed exercise and we had fun.

Apayao is indeed a surprise. Lussok Cave is just one of the many beautiful destinations to explore in the province. I am just happy and grateful to be able to experience Apayao. I am definitely going back, soon!

Recommendations

Lussok Cave’s immense natural beauty has a lot of potential when it comes to tourism. We’ve seen the efforts of the local tourism team and DOT to protect and promote this adventure spot. Continuous consultation is also in the work for further improvement.

Good thing that aside from PHILTOA, we were also with the Philippines Tourism Promotions Board on this trip to assess what still needs to work on. As I’ve mentioned, Lussok Cave, the spelunking, is not for everybody. The guides are very helpful in securing the guests’ safety, but still, proper gears like helmets are needed for those who will go for the cave adventure.

Although I am a travel blogger assigned to write about the destinations we visited, I was actually part of the TPB delegation for this, so we got a chance to talk about this.

It’s good to know that different stakeholders are also seeing the need for proper gears for tourists’ during spelunking. With proper coordination with the local government unit and tourism office, it is only a matter of time that this will be fulfilled. Through this initiative, Lussok Cave will continue as one of the best adventure destinations not only in Apayao but in the northern Philippines.

Best Time to visit Apayao

I was able to chat with Ma’am Rebecca Mamba, the Provincial Tourism Officer of Apayao, during our visit and she actually told us that we should go back for Say-Am Festival on February 14.

Say-Am Festival is Apayao’s grandest festival. This is not only the commemoration of Apayao being an independent province, but also a celebration of its culture with series of activities with street dancing, agro-industrial trade fair, and of course, the much-awaited search for the “Dayag Ti Apayao.”

Aside from the grandest festival in Apayao, the best time to visit the province is from March to May, during summer.

You can still visit from June to November, but be prepared because it’s already the rainy season.

Our list of must-visit tourist spots in Apayao – a landlocked province in Northern Luzon in the Philippines.

The northern part of Luzon has more to offer than just Vigan and Laoag . These two places are the common choices when you refer to north tourist destinations in Luzon but more than them, there is also Apayao .

Apayao is the place in the Cordillera region that offers activities that get your heart-raising and blood running. Adrenaline junkies will love it here. Here are some of the top tourist spots in Apayao you can visit.

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Apayao

Lussok crystal cave.

Lussok Crystal Cave, one of the top tourist spots in Apayao, is a vertical cave that looks like it was pulled out straight from a fantasy book. As you ride the boat down the teal colored river, you’ll see how the trees arch above you and create the shade you need from the sun’s heat as you discover more of the river to the cave.

Exploring the limestone cave is exciting because you really have to use your brain and trust your instincts as you scale through it. You’ll see different rock formations that vary in color, shape, and size; there are even some that shine and glitter.

Lussok Crystal Cave, one of the top tourist spots in Apayao

How to get to Lussok Crystal Cave and other tourist spots in Apayao?

The best way to explore Apayao, especially in Luna area is by chartering a habal-habal /single motorcycle. The attractions are pretty much far from each other so it is highly recommended that you have a ride. Also, take note that the road is not paved all the way so it gets muddy in some parts.

Lussok Crystal Cave in Apayao

Dupag Rock Formation

Can you survive climbing this labyrinth? Wouldn’t it be nice to explore and try out climbing it? This is probably the most famous place and the best tourist spot here in Apayao. This labyrinth is composed of many jagged limestone rocks towering at 8 feet tall – all sit atop a hill.

There are different trails you can take here, all with varying difficulty. This is a good place to go to for it gives such a magnificent view of the forest and fields around it. Plus it also gives a view of the river close by.

Gololan Falls

Enjoy the cool water and refreshing air in the area of Gololan falls. This fall has a height of 33 meters that has pure white water falling. You’ll actually see at the bottom of the falls a beautiful rainbow forming.

The trek to the bottom of the falls is definitely challenging but it is worth it. It is just so peaceful and relaxing to go here. The lush vegetation around gives it an even cooler atmosphere.

Manacota Underground River

Going here gives you the opportunity to hike and swim. You have to hike at least 1.5 kilometers to get to the river then cross the river as well, there are parts of the river that aren’t advisable for non-professionals.

This is quite the challenge as well, but hey, that is why going to Apayoa must only be for the brave and fearless or those at least those willing to face their fears. The mouth of the river is absolutely breathtaking. And if you feel really tired just take a dip, it’ll cool you down.

All abang Cave and Nalvo Cave

Want to do something exciting? You can go spelunking at the gigantic cave of Allabang ! Discover the cave and see how different some things are when they live in the dark. Plus there are a lot of guano here. As for Nalvo Cave, it is good for cave hopping.

Luna: A Day in the Show Window of Apayao

Luna Apayao

Eversince I’ve seen the image of Lussok Crystal Cave , the dream of going to Luna haunted me. There’s something about the place that got me, something mystifying. I was fascinated and transfixed by the beautiful aura that the image radiates. I should see it by my own eyes.

Luna is the de facto seat of government of the province of Apayao, a province under Cordillera Administrative Region. Although the town is regionally alligned with Cordillera, it is in fact generally a lowland town, bounded in the north by the town of Abulug of the province Cagayan.

Luna Apayao

Luna and the entire province of Apayao is out of the usual tourists path but unknown to many, it has fair share of natural attractions that makes it a promising eco-tourism destination. It is dubbed as the “Show Window of Apayao”, the premiere tourist destination of the province and I believe time will come that the province will shine, and I would like to jumpstart it as early as now.

So I headed to Luna last year to crossout one item in my bucket list. I boarded the night bus of Florida Bus Line from Sampaloc to Junction Luna in Abulug, Cagayan that traveled for 12 hours via Ilocos route. By eight in the morning of the next day, I was already in Luna Junction and after fifteen more minutes of trike ride, I reached my destination! Welcome to Luna, Apayao!

Luna Apayao

Armed only with old information from the internet I was generally clueless about the town. The information on the web are either outdated or lacking, the scarcity of relevant and up to date information made me want to go to Luna more.

First concern was accommodation, my research yielded Versola’s Transient and two other establishments, all with no contact numbers provided. So I asked the trike driver to bring me to the first one, Versola’s, who happens to be owned by a family of politicians. But they no longer offer accommodations, instead they led me to the town’s center at the back of Landbank, just a short walk from Versola’s.

Luna Apayao

After a few walk, a streamer caught my attention. “Village Guest House” it says, complete with contact information to which I dialled quickly. It was Mircha, daughter of the owner, who answered on the other line and all of a sudden, I already have a room. A cheap one at P250 per night. Mircha told me to wait for Kuya Nar, the caretaker, who arrived in his motorbike shortly.

Kuya Nar fixed my room and was so helpful on attending to my needs. I asked him to help me find someone to guide me to Lussok Crystal Cave, Bayugao Falls and Allabang Cave. He drove his motorbike away and when he came back, he was with another guy in a motorbike – Kuya Bobby Agite, my guide.

Luna

After a brief introduction, I rode on Kuya Bobby’s back and off we went. It was a long road going to our first destination –  Lussok Crystal Cave. The road is mostly rough, muddy and grassy trail but Kuya Bobby made sure I was comfortable and at ease. He opened up his life story en route to our destination. I can say that his life as a family man is interesting and entertaining.

We crossed two rivers and muddy trails before Kuya Bobby stopped and parked his motorbike. From there, we traversed a slippery trail that leads to a river and the mouth of Lussok Crystal Cave.

Luna Apayao

Lussok Crystal Cave is a seven-chamber cave in the rocky slope of Barangay Dagupan that is adorned with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. It is navigable through an underground river system that flows freely from end to end. The river is around five meters wide and its water is approximately four meters deep. There’s no other way of going into the cave but to swim accross the emerald water. I am not a good swimmer but I had no choice, thankfully there’s a rope attached to a tree that I could hold on to.

There were other people in the cave when we arrived. Holding my camera phone, Kuya Bobby went ahead first, I followed shortly. I tried not to hold to the rope to build my confidence in swimming, it was just a short and easy swim anyway. When I finally reached the dry rocky area of the cave, lo and behold, a stunning view of the river and the cave opening was revealed from my vantage point. It was so beautiful! I told Kuya Bobby that the scene in front of me was the exact captivating image of Lussok Cave that my friend Kenneth showed me. There used to be a raft in the mouth of the cave, but it wasn’t there that time. So we weren’t able to navigate the underground river towards the end of the cave.

Luna Apayao

After spending some time in Lussok Cave, we decided to leave and head to our next destination – Bayugao Falls.

En route to Bayugao Falls, Kuya Bobby told me of an unnamed waterfalls in the forest of Luna. According to him, it was the biggest waterfalls he has seen in the entire Luna. I got interested but going there requires two days. Wow!

Kuya Bobby was a good story teller, I was hooked with his stories that I didn’t notice the rough trail going to our next destination. I was surprised when he just stopped somewhere, we were already in Bayugao Falls.

Luna Apayao

Located in the village of Turod, Bayugao Falls is a six layered waterfalls consisting of three decks of natural pool. The second deck is ideal for swimming. There were no other people around when we arrived, so we had the whole waterfalls all to ourselves. But I just took pictures of the falls and opted not to swim. We left afterwards and proceeded to our next stop – Allabang Cave.

Allabang Cave is situated in the village of Zumigui near the Poblacion, it is hidden in a rocky slope carpeted by green vegetation and overlooking the vast rice paddies. Going there, we needed to pass through a muddy trail. Since the cave is rarely visited by tourists, there is no clear path going to the entrance so we had difficulty finding it.

Luna Apayao

The cave has a small opening that can only fit one person at a time but inside is a huge chamber that can fit a lot of people. The smell of “guano” and the sound of the bats welcomed us inside. Kuya Bobby said that the cave is generally unexplored, there may be other chambers and openings that lead to somewhere. I didn’t have a luxury of time to explore more since I have a bus to catch in the afternoon, we decided to leave.

Luna Apayao

Back to the guesthouse, I had a short rest before packing up my stuff. I originally intended to stay in town for a night but with my primary goal of seeing the main attractions of Luna, specifically the Lussok Crystal Cave, I decided to cut it short and take the late afternoon bus to Manila. It was a long road to my city, but I was about to go home filled with new discoveries from one of the least explored areas of Cordillera. There are more in Luna than Lussok Crystal Cave, Bayugao Falls and Allabang Cave and I am looking forward someday on spending a day or two in town to get to know Luna well. But for now, thank you Luna for a short yet sweet experience!

Apayao may just be a place you knew from your Philippine history class. Or you may have heard of it before but never even got your fingers googling it somehow.

This far-flung province in the Cordillera Region , framed by lush mountainscapes & crouched by evergreen fields, is the  stuff of out-of-radar getaways. It’s a universe of eco-destinations, exquisite indigenous culture & quiet retreats.

Although none are held secret, they remain largely unexplored by many tourists. And when you decide to come, you’ll find that everything is worth the pursuit.

Get to Know Apayao, Now!

Oh you must have  basked on the beaches in Pagudpud . Sure, you’ve gone deep in the caves of Cagayan Valley . You’ve probably feasted on miki in Bangued & got inked by Apo Whang-od in Buscalan . But then you missed Apayao, the province at the heart of it all.

Where is Apayao?

The provinces of Cagayan Valley, Abra, Ilocos Norte & Kalinga surrounds Apayao. It is part of the Cordillera Administrative Region, dotting Kabugao as its capital town.

We may be more familiar with the name Kalinga-Apayao . But these two provinces have long separated in 1995. The Ymandaya & Imallod of the Isneg tribe are their indigenous community who live with the rest of the Ilocano population.

Kabugao is a first class municipality & is the center of trade, education, transportation & governance. However, Luna is also a preferred place especially among tourists since many attractions are in this quiet town.

What to See in Apayao?

Ecotourism is what they are most proud about. It offers its guests with various ways to experience nature — from underground rivers to skyscraping rock formations.

Note that there’s actually more to see than what’s on this list as the province continues to provide infrastructure support & guidelines.

Dupag Rock Formation

Perhaps, the Dupag Rock Formation in Luna is the most coveted attraction in the Province. This cluster of razor-like limestone rocks puncture the panoramic Marag Valley. While getting there is already half the excitement crossing a river, going up is an adrenaline-pumping fun.

Lussuk Cave and Underground River

Just when you think that only Puerto Princesa has an underground river , Apayao will surprise you with an equally exciting adventure.

The thrill begins with a short upstream paddle on the placid river leading to the mouth of Lussuk Cave. What makes this experience different from Palawan is the chance for tourists to explore the different chambers on foot.

Lussuk or hole in Ilocano used to be a hideout of the Japanese in World War II. It is also called Crystal Cave because of its sparkling mineral deposits.

Manacota Cave and Underground River

Manacota is just a hop away from Dupag Rock Formation. With a spout of raging river stream, this spot makes it awesome for a cold dip surrounded by massive stone walls.

This subterranean river runs about 700 meters illuminated by streaks of sunlight peeking through rock crevices & thick foliage.

Cagandungan Hanging Bridge

The thrill of standing on a rickety wooden bridge makes Cagandungan an attraction to add  on your Apayao bucketlist. Spanning about 150 meters, it connects Barangay Marag and Cagandungan. Also, it is the site of the annual Rakit Festival, parading its bountiful harvests aboard bamboo rafts.

Bayugao Falls

It might not be the highest or widest of waterfalls but these mutli-tiered cascades make up for a perfect adventure. It cuts through the thick of forest of Marag Valley & flows through a gushing roar of sparkling water curtains.

Emilia Church Ruins

The old church ruins of Emilia in Pudtol is a reminder of the short-lived Spanish conquest of Apayao. The Dominicans built it in 1684 but was abandoned in 1815 due to attacks of the local Isneg.

Mataguisi Church Ruins

Just close by Emilia Church are the ruins of Mataguisi Church. Today, what’s left of this 1608 stone church are its façade and some surviving walls.

The Cordilleras is famous for chasing sea of clouds. And yes, Apayao is no exception with Mt. Kilang as its entry. But if you can’t scale its 1,656 elevation, don’t fret. Just drive up to Solsona-Apayao Road in Calanasan & soak in all the cloudy drama.

Why Visit Apayao?

It’s simple — give this place a chance to tickle your wanderlusting fancies. Allow them to showcase their colorful culture. Savour their indigenous cuisine . Explore someplace new.

When to Visit Apayao?

Summer is the best time to experience Apayao. Although, in May it can get really very hot. To add, heaviest rains come in December to February.

How to Travel to Apayao?

The fastest way is to fly to Tuguegarao or Laoag . Then, take onward overland trip to Kabugao. Alternatively, you can also take the bus from Manila to Apayao. Terminals are in the following locations: North Star Bus Line (Quezon City), Florida Bus (España).
