Expect the cost of your airfare to continue to rise, an aviation trade group warns

The cost of your next flight is likely to go up

DUBAI -- The cost of your next flight is likely to go up.

That's the word from the International Air Transport Association, which held its annual meeting Monday in Dubai, home to the long-haul carrier Emirates.

While carriers recover from the groundings worldwide from the coronavirus pandemic, industry leaders told journalists that there are several costs likely to push those ticket prices ever higher.

Part of that comes from worldwide inflation, an ongoing problem since the pandemic started. Jet fuel costs, roughly a third of all airline expenses, remain high. Meanwhile, a global push for the aviation industry to decarbonize has more carriers fighting for the little amount of so-called sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, available in the market.

"The airlines will continue to do everything they can to keep costs in control as much as possible for the benefit of consumers," said Willie Walsh, the director-general of the the International Air Transport Association, an industry-trade group. "But I think it's unrealistic to expect that airlines can continue to absorb all of the costs. ... It's not something we like to do, but it's something we have to do."

Also pressuring the industry is a pandemic hangover in aircraft production as well, they say. Carriers now keep older planes that burn more fuel flying longer. There also aren't enough new aircraft to expand routes and increase supply to bring down overall prices.

That warning comes as the IATA estimates globally, airline revenue will reach nearly $1 trillion in 2024, a record high. There will be 4.96 billion travelers on airplanes this year, with total expenses for carriers reaching $936 billion - another record high.

But industry profits also are expected to be nearly $60 billion this year.

In particular, Emirates, a main driver for Dubai's economy, saw record profits of $4.7 billion in 2023 off revenues of $33 billion.

The Emirates' results track with those for its base, Dubai International Airport. The world's busiest airport for international travelers had 86.9 million passengers last year, surpassing numbers for 2019 just before the coronavirus pandemic grounded global aviation.

The airport now plans to move to the city-state's second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches in the next 10 years in a project worth nearly $35 billion.

Tim Clark, the airline's president, obliquely acknowledged that Monday by saying that he didn't want people to "get boxes of tissues out and play the violins" when warning that the industry's profit margins sit in the low single digits. However, he contended that as airlines have grown larger and carriers consolidated, cost savings have quietly been passed onto consumers now able to book flights across the world.

"It is quite amazing that ticket prices are where they are today," Clark said. "I think the value-for-money proposition that the consumers have had the benefit from for many decades is something that is one of those hidden bits of the narrative."

Yvonne Manzi Makolo, the CEO of RwandAir, also highlighted the taxes and fees imposed on carriers by the countries they operate in. She specifically cited those paid by carriers flying out of African nations as "already ridiculous."

Health Dept. warns of possible measles exposure at Philadelphia International Airport

Officials say many countries, including travel destinations, are experiencing measles outbreaks.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Health officials are warning about a possible measles exposure at Philadelphia International Airport.

The potential exposure happened between 2:50 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at the Federal Inspection Area of Terminal A West.

The individual who had measles was traveling through the airport and is unrelated to a measles case reported back on May 20 , the Philadelphia Health Department said Monday.

The department said there is no risk to the general public, and those who are vaccinated against measles are protected and don't need to take any further action.

Those who are not vaccinated, however, should watch for symptoms including fever, runny nose, cough, and puffy, red eyes, followed by rash. More serious cases can cause inflammation of the organs, brain infection or death.

Measles is highly contagious, and officials say anyone who hasn't gotten a vaccination yet should do so right away.

"Many countries, including travel destinations, are experiencing measles outbreaks, so the potential for travel-related measles cases and subsequent outbreaks in the United States has increased," Dr. Landrus Burress, Director, Division of Disease Control.

Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao: The Archipelago of Fun in the Caribbean

This Caribbean islands trifecta is famous for embracing different cultures and having some of the most iconic vistas in the tropics. Aruba is famous for its lively Caribbean spirit, while Bonaire is known for its quiet and remote vibe, and Curacao has colorful architecture and picture-perfect beaches.

Aruba is one of the best Caribbean islands to visit and has a fantastic blend of different cultures that includes indigenous Spanish , African , Dutch, and South American influences. This melting pot is home to close to one hundred nationalities and two official languages, Dutch and Papiamento. Many residents speak even more, including English and Spanish. Aruban culture is all about the spirit of celebration and having an appreciation for the diversity of the island.

You can catch a glimpse of this island medley of cultures in galleries like Unoca, theaters like Cas di Cultura, and places like The National Archaeological Museum Aruba, the Aloe Museum and Factory, and the Arubian Taste Liqueur and Rum Shop. Also stop by Cosecha, a century-old building bursting with local arts and crafts in Oranjestad, and The Creative Center, which is connected to Cosecha and has art classes. Aruba's music is also the result of diverse cultures blending beautifully, with the rhythms including calypso, Tumba, brass and the famous Roadmarch dancing. The latter is seen during carnival month but you can see street festivities, impressive costumes, local music and creative parades all year long. The Bonbini Aruba Festival takes place every Tuesday and offers folkloric music and dance while the Caribbean Festival comes to life every Thursday night with performers, food stands, and crafts. Others include the Dera Gai celebration, the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, and the Summer Music Festival during June.

Just like the arts and culture, Aruba's food is a mix of Caribbean , Dutch , African, and Latin American flavors. Fresh seafood, fried delicacies, wholesome stews, and tasty soups are all incorporated. Dishes like pan bati (a sweet and soft flatbread), cabrito stoba (a popular goat stew), and keri keri (a delicious fish soup) are all local staples and easy to find around the island. For drinks, there's beer (the most popular is Balashi) and cocktails like Aruba Ariba, which has a distinctive bright red color. For desserts, go with bolo di banana, a plantain pudding, or with pan bollo, a bread pudding served with rum sauce and a side of vanilla ice cream.

Head to north Aruba to find natural wonders like the Arikok National Park, which has hiking trails and various geological formations, including lava, quartz and limestone. You'll also find some of Aruba's oldest indigenous paintings, made by the Arawaks, as well as gold mines and plantation ruins. Near the park, you can also find Rock Wish Garden, where you can build stone towers that are believed to grant the wishes of those who make them. In the south, you'll find the San Nicolas Bay Reef Islands, which are a perfect place to see the Cayenne tern as well as other tropical birds. Meanwhile, more than 80 species live inside the Bubali Bird Sanctuary, which is close to Eagle Beach.

Aruba is famous for its colorful architecture and you'll find plenty of it on your Southern Caribbean Cruise to Oranjestad , the island's capital. The Dutch buildings house everything from restaurants to shops and bars and allow you to see what it's like to live like a local. You can walk to the lush Wilhelmina Park, which honors Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands with a sculpture made with bright white marble, and see the California lighthouse, which is one of Aruba's most famous landmarks. The lighthouse was completed in 1916 after the steamship California wrecked nearby near the end of the nineteenth century. Another architectural must-see is the Old Dutch Windmill, a relic from when Aruba was owned by Holland which is now a popular restaurant.

If you'd like to try Papiamento, start with "con ta bai?" (how are you?), "danki" (thank you), or "hopi bon" (very good). The currency in Aruba is the florin but every establishment on the island accepts US dollars. Tipping is generally optional, though some bars and restaurants include a 10-15% service charge on your bill. And feel free to drink the water from the tap in Aruba — the water is actually one of the cleanest in the world, which comes in handy when dealing with the strong sun on the island. Keep yourself hydrated!

Indian, African, Asian and European inhabitants formed Bonaire and the islanders keep alive many of the traditions brought by settlers. Religious and holiday celebrations are at the heart of Bonaire culture. Their music is a lively collection of tribal sounds, makeshift instruments and modern beats.

On a Southern Caribbean cruise to Bonaire , you'll find flavorful dishes that often involve seafood and goat. Many come with a side of fungi (a type of polenta), rice and beans and plenty of fried plantains, demonstrating the Latin American influence. An African influence can be seen in the island's cuisine as well with dishes like guiambo (a soup made of okra and seafood). Another delicacy you should try is cocada, a sweet coconut dessert made with sugar, vanilla, rose essence, and coconut. For a quintessential Bonaire eating experience, head to Posada Para Mira in Rincon and try the fish balls and iguana stew or try Brass Boer, which features Asian-inspired dishes like their famous avocado with fish and Indonesian spices.

Some of the instruments that Bonaireans crafted are the bari, a drum made with a small rum barrel covered with sheepskin and the chapi, a percussive instrument that was created from the metal end of a hoe and hit with a metal bar. Plow blades, conch shells and even dried donkey jaws with teeth were also used to make musical sounds. The traditional dances in Bonaire are the Bari and the Simadan but locals also enjoy polka, the merengue, the jazz waltz and the carioca. The Bari is performed during festival time with a lead singer improvising lyrics while the Simadan is performed during harvest time, which occurs during the months of February through April.

Bonaire is a nature enthusiast's paradise and conservation efforts are at the forefront of the tourism industry here. Make sure to meet the flamingos of Bonaire at Gotomeer — they're Bonaire's national bird. You should also head to the Washington Slagbaai National Park. It can take a whole day to see it properly so make sure to stop by the visitor center and museum to plan your visit. Bonaire has a whooping 22 beaches to discover and the island offers soft sand beaches as well as rugged coastline. Atlantis Beach is ideal for kiteboarders, white-sand seekers and those looking for a long beach stroll while Te Amo Beach has tranquil waters with a sandy shoreline and great snorkeling nearby. Playa Chikitu, which is located inside the Washington Slagbaai National Park, is a remote cove with white sand dunes, luminescent waters and sea turtle nests. Be careful there because the currents are strong and swimming is not allowed.

Bonaire has a very low risk of tropical storm activity and temperatures usually stay between 73 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The hottest season runs from May to October but the trade winds send breezes to the island and the rainy season is short, running from October to December. Pack light cotton clothing and breathable shoes to stay cool. Also, bring plenty of sunblock and always keep a water bottle with you to stay hydrated.

Just like the sister islands in the A-B-C Caribbean island chain, Curaçao is influenced by a variety of cultures but on Curaçao, the Dutch influence is by far the strongest — the island is still a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands . Papiamento and Dutch are the official languages and English and Spanish are often spoken by locals as well.

Dutch cuisine influences dishes on Curaçao the most, though Afro-Caribbean, Venezuelan and Indonesian influences have also made their way to the Curaçao tables. One of the staples is piska ku funchi, a fresh dish made with polenta, fried plantain and salad. The most popular fish on Curaçao is the red snapper and you'll find many dishes featuring it. Meanwhile, if you're looking for something sweet, try arepa di pampuna, a pumpkin pancake eaten between meals or as a dessert. Pumpkin isn't seasonal on Curaçao so you'll find it as an ingredient in many dishes. You can wash it all down with a Polar or Amstel beer, which are the local favorites.

When it comes to music, Curaçao is known for tumba, a conga-heavy genre that's popular during Carnival period. Dances include waltzes, danzas and mazurkas. Innovations over the decades have included blending the more traditional music with Cuban and Dominican sounds like bolero, merengue and guaracha. You can dance to Curaçao beats in places like Blues Bar, Hofi Fidel and Kokomo Beach.

Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and the candy-colored waterfront town is similar in design and feel to Amsterdam. The airy European plazas, lively markets and artisanal stands add to the vibe of the sunny city while places like Papagayo Hotel feature minimalist designs.

Spots you should see include Christoffelpark, which is a protected park with a peak that's the island's highest at 375 meters above sea level. It houses old plantations, mansion ruins and ancient drawings. You should also visit the Hato Caves, which has stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes and waterfalls. For beaches, Cas Abao, Playa Lagun, Playa Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara Beach all offer white sandy shores great for swimming, snorkeling or just lounging.

Like the other two islands, Curaçao is hot and it's important to pack accordingly. Comfortable, breathable shoes and light clothing are ideal. To really see the island, it's recommended that you rent a car and you'll need a credit card to do so. Curaçao is considered to be safe but you should always practice common sense and keep your belongings close.

How omicron covid-19 variant is changing holiday travel plans.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- The new omicron COVID-19 variant is already impacting international travel while domestic remains unchanged as the holiday season gets underway.

On Thursday evening, the Biden administration announced that starting Monday, Dec. 6, all travelers coming from abroad will be required to test negative within 24 hours of traveling to the U.S. regardless of vaccination status or nationality.

One week ago, on Thanksgiving Day, no one was talking about omicron. Now it's on everyone's radar, especially as people anticipate flying to see family for the holiday season.

"There are people who are going to travel no matter what." according to Christopher Dennis who has worked in the luggage and travel business for 40 years. Among customers he talks to, he senses travel within the U.S. will carry on.

However, he is sending increased hesitancy among those traveling internationally.

"They can't afford to get stuck somewhere in quarantine for X amount of days. They're taking a risk," said Dennis.

"You have to realize when you're traveling internationally all those rules about a quarantine, testing and vaccination status could all change at a moment's notice," said ABC7 News special correspondent Dr. Alok Patel.

Domestic travel is likely to be stable by comparison but Dr. Patel tells ABC7 News it's possible some individual states could end up re-imposing restrictions or testing like Hawaii did.

Some are glad they're staying close to home.

But others say they're not letting omicron derail their holiday plans.

"There's always going to be new variants. I'm not going to stop life and seeing family because of it," said Steven Anderson of Walnut Creek.

One woman we spoke to says while she's still planning to fly out of state to meet vaccinated relatives she may be more cautious with her children in airports and on planes.

"What are you going to do? As long as the virus exists it's going to morph, it's going to change," said Pleasant Hill resident John Lopipero.

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States by accessing the Global Entry processing technology at selected airports .

At airports, program members proceed to the Global Entry lanes where processing technology will be used to expedite the members by capturing a photo to verify their membership. Once the photo has been captured, the member will receive on-screen instructions and proceed to a CBP officer who will confirm that you have successfully completed the process.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment. If a traveler was unable to schedule an interview at an Enrollment Center prior to their international travel, they have an option to complete their interview via Enrollment on Arrival upon their arrival to the United States.

Another upcoming processing technology option for travelers will be the Global Entry Mobile App. This app will enable members to validate their arrival to the U.S. on their iOS or Android device prior to entering the Federal Inspection Services area.

While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

International travel doesn’t have to be tricky – just follow these steps to help you prepare for your trip.

Travel documents and requirements

You’re responsible to make sure you have the correct documents to enter and pass through any countries during your trip, and then make your way back home. If you don’t have the required documentation and identification, you will not be allowed to board the plane and would be responsible for any resulting costs.

Keep in mind:

• Everyone traveling, regardless of age, needs their own set of travel documents.
• Always use the information exactly as it appears on your passport (to book and fill out any documents).
• Check with the consulate of every country you’re entering (or passing through) to make sure you meet all travel requirements.
• Some countries require proof of return or onward travel, a visiting address and sufficient funds for your stay.

All children, regardless of age, must have a passport and any travel documents required by the countries visited. If you’re traveling internationally with anyone under 18, you may be required to show documentary evidence of your relationship and a Letter of Consent or permission for the child's travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian not present.

Traveling with children

A passport is required for all international travel. If you're traveling anywhere overseas, you need a passport to board an international flight and to enter the country. Passport cards will not be accepted as form of I.D. for international air travel.

• Some countries require your passport to be issued at least 6 months before the day you arrive. Check your destination’s requirements if you’re unsure.
• Passports must be kept in good condition, free of any damage beyond normal wear and tear, and material alterations. You may be denied boarding if you travel with a passport that appears damaged or altered.

U.S. citizens can use any government-issued form of identification to travel between the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In addition to a passport, some countries require a visa to enter. If you’re traveling to the U.S. for a stay less than 90 days, the Department of Homeland Security requires eligible travelers to use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), as part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). You must submit your application no later than 72 hours before departing for the U.S., but we suggest you apply for authorization when you start planning your trip. You will be denied boarding if you arrive at the airport without an approved ESTA.

An approved ESTA travel authorization is:

• Valid for up to 2 years or your passport expires, whichever comes first
• Valid for multiple entries into the U.S.
• Not a guarantee of admissibility to the U.S., approval only authorizes you to board a carrier for travel to the U.S.

To enter the U.S. under the VWP, each passenger must have a machine-readable passport. If you don’t have a machine-readable zone, a valid visa is required.

Each passenger traveling to the U.S. under the VWP must have a:

If you present a non-electronic passport, a valid U.S. visa will be required or you’ll be denied boarding and entry into the U.S.

Contact tracing for flights to the U.S.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires all passengers flying to the United States to provide their contact information within 72 hours of departure. This information may be used by public health officials to follow up with passengers who may have been exposed to a contagious disease during travel.

Additional requirements

Some countries have additional requirements for travel, so we recommend that you check the U.S. Department of State website for the latest information and sign up for their Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

Travelers flying to Australia from certain countries, including the U.S., will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for entry.

Brazil has postponed requiring an eVisa for U.S., Canadian and Australian citizens until April 2025.

All visa-exempt foreign travelers who fly to, or transit through Canada now need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). The authorization is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and is valid for 5 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

U.S. citizens and travelers with a valid Canadian visa are exempt from this eTA requirement.

Under the VWP, Nationals of Chile traveling to the U.S. are required to have an E-passport in addition to a machine-readable passport.

All travelers entering Cuba will need to prepare additional information including a visa and health insurance.

Travelers flying to Curaçao will need to complete a digital embarkation/disembarkation card (ED Card) prior to their trip.

If you are a permanent resident of Australia or travelling on a passport from a visa waiver country, you'll need an New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). Some visitors and transit passengers can travel to New Zealand without a visa if they get an NZeTA before their trip.

1.3 million passengers expected at Bush and Hobby airports in Memorial Day weekend, officials say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Airport System is urging passengers to prepare for a busy Memorial Day weekend at Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports.

The HAS expects 1.3 million passengers between the Thursday and Wednesday after Memorial Day.

Due to the kickoff of the summer travel season, airport officials urge you to reserve parking at least 12 hours in advance.

A check of parking availability shows some airport parking lots were already close to capacity on Thursday.

Peak travel times are from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. During peak hours, all travelers should arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flights, specifically at Bush Airport due to construction.

AAA Texas says 3.1 million Texans are preparing to hit the road this holiday weekend.

The state-wide gas price average is 3.18 per gallon of regular unleaded fuel.

For the most part, you shouldn't run into any major construction closures, as TxDOT takes a break during the holiday weekend, allowing as much space for drivers as possible.

However, in the Houston area, you'll still see some congestion. On I-45, TxDOT is estimating the busiest travel period on Friday between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., and on I-10, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The lightest days to drive are projected to be Saturday and Sunday, with traffic picking up again on Monday afternoon.

There is one emergency closure taking place on US-290, just south of West 34th Street. CenterPoint is shutting down the mainlanes and frontage road in both directions on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to make transmission line repairs following this month's devastating wind storm.

Sydney Airport is pushing to keep a rule that lets some planes land an hour before curfew ends, warning international airlines may abandon us otherwise.

An exemption that allowed some aircraft to land at the airport before the overnight curfew ends every morning will end with the opening of a competitor in 2026.

Kingsford Smith Airport’s shoulder period, lasting from 5am-6am, and 11pm-midnight, will be waved goodbye when the doors of Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), located in Luddenham and Badgerys Creek, opens.

However, Sydney Airport argues that airlines’ global flight schedules aren’t being accounted for in the decision to end the exemption. In particular, Heathrow Airport in London required the ability to land at Mascot between 5am and 6am during the northern summer.

Those flights then depart Sydney Airport and return to London Heathrow later the same morning.

In its Draft Environmental Impact Statement for WSI’s airspace and flight path design , Sydney Airport calls for action, points out that these services have operated for decades and there’s a need to accommodate them or we will miss out greatly.

It states: “Preventing those flights from doing so would cause significant disruptions for those airlines and the travelling public.

“If these flights are unable to land at Sydney Airport, they will not automatically go to WSI as airlines may instead choose not to fly to New South Wales altogether, or even Australia, impacting tourism and trade.

“If they do move to WSI, this simply moves the noise impact during the current curfew shoulder periods to the communities around WSI.”

Airlines including Qantas, British Airways and Singapore Airways currently land during the shoulder period. There’s a flight cap of 24 a week during the morning shoulder period, due to regulations, and zero in the evening shoulder.

Sydney Airport said there’s a need to review this, and bring it in line with other countries. There's also an urgent need to boost capacity.

“There is an opportunity to lift capacity at Sydney Airport to the benefit of its passengers and with minimal impact on local communities,” it said. “Sydney Airport considers that existing capacity constraints at Sydney Airport are driven predominantly by outdated regulations which apply to the airport, and that these require urgent reform.”

It also stated that the current operating restrictions – and flight paths – that apply to the airport were put in place in 1997.

These operating restrictions have remained unchanged for over a quarter of a century despite increased demand for air travel and significant technological advances in aviation, noise mitigation, and air navigation technology.

It also stated it has recognised the importance of minimising noise on the community.

“Sydney Airport has commenced work on identifying a range of noise mitigation options (including the use of modern air navigation technology and other measures) which could be trialled at Sydney Airport.

“Sydney Airport proposes to pragmatically work with its airline partners and the Australian Government for support to trial these initiatives as soon as possible.”

Spokesperson for the Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King told news.com.au the Government had “no current plans” to review Sydney Airport’s curfew, however, there have been reforms to make best use of takeoff and landing slots.

Perth Airport flights to resume after refuelling issue grounded planes, stranding thousands

A refuelling issue at Perth Airport which grounded domestic and international flights on Saturday morning has been resolved, the airport says.

At least 70 domestic and international flights were affected, with planes unable to land at the airport or depart.

Passengers were stranded at airports nationwide and at some international destinations, including Doha waiting to get to Perth.

Perth Airport said a problem with load pressure in the fuel lines had caused the issue, which had since been fixed.

Airport CEO Jason Waters said the system had now been repaired and tested.

Mr Waters apologised to impacted travellers and said the airport would be working with airlines to resume normal operations as soon as possible.

"The effects will be felt throughout today but we'd like to think that within a short period of time after that we'll get back to normal flights," he said.

"I'd like to think that by this evening and into tomorrow we'll have it dealt with but given we're talking about long haul flights and the extent of the backlog, it might take some time."

It's understood some flights had been delayed since Friday night, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

The airport called in external experts, including engineers and technicians, to identify and repair the problem.

"As of just recently, I can inform you that we are back to normal refuelling and obviously very keen to see a return to normal operation," Mr Waters said.

"This has had a significant impact on flights overnight. 

"From Perth airport's perspective we're very apologetic and sympathetic to impacted travellers.

"We're going to work very hard with our airlines here to ensure we get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

Mr Waters said the problem appeared to be the result of "air sucked into the distribution system".

No compensation for passengers, says Virgin

Virgin Airlines apologised to customers in a statement handed to passengers at Perth Airport, but said it was not required by law to provide compensation "for delays or cancellations outside of our control".

"We recommend you contact your travel insurance provider to assist you with any unforeseen expenses," the statement said.

A virgin spokeswoman later clarified that passengers were entitled to be re-booked on other flights or apply for a refund.

Perth man Darshan Patel, who had had been planning to go to Hobart on Saturday for his wife's birthday until their flight was cancelled, said the airline's response was not good enough.

He wants compensation for his flights and other non-refundable bookings, such as accommodation.

"We're really not happy because we've been planning for this holiday for quite a long time," Mr Patel said.

"Somebody is responsible for what is happening and there should be something done to help the passengers.

"We've booked everything well ahead, now it's getting cancelled. All our bookings are non-refundable. 

"It's just passengers who are suffering."

Flights diverted to regional airports

At least four flights were diverted to regional airports including a Philippines Airlines flight from Manila to Perth that landed in Geraldton earlier on Saturday.

Geraldton is about 420 kilometres north of Perth.

A Geraldton Airport spokesperson said the small regional airport could only assist with a handful of flights due to having limited fuel supply themselves. 

Passengers on the Philippines flight were not allowed to disembark and a biosecurity representative was on site. 

City of Geraldton chief executive Ross McKim said Geraldton Airport was in danger of running out of fuel after the Philippines flight took a quarter of the airport's fuel capacity.

"The [airport's] refuelling isn't booked until mid-next week so we're going to have to work out how to get some up sooner than that," he said.

Qantas flight QFA10 from London to Perth was diverted to Karratha, in the state's far north.

Other flights were diverted to Kalgoorlie, about 600km east of Perth.

Passenger sat on plane for hours

Perth man Campbell Grieves and Swiss exchange student Zander Goosen arrived at the airport early to catch a flight to Sydney.

"We were taking (Zander) to see all the classic Aussie things in Sydney … the bridge, the Opera House," Mr Grieves said.

"We get here at about 6am and we get on the plane, boarded alright, then we sat there in the little economy seat for two hours.

"The captain was ringing every in hour saying 'dunno where the fuel is,' eventually we get kicked off the plane and the flight is cancelled." 

Mr Grieves said he had been told the earliest he and Mr Goosen could travel to Sydney was Monday.

Perth resident Stephen Herbert is stranded in Doha, where he was meant to stop briefly en route from London to Perth on Qatar Airlines.

" We have been in a line with other returning Aussies for nearly four hours," he said.

"No official from Qatar Airlines has given us any updates and we are relying on social media.

"[There are] lots of tired and disgruntled people wanting answers."

He was scathing of Perth Airport over the delays.

"There's no way you can call Perth an international airport after this debacle. Imagine if this happened at Heathrow?" he said.

Another passenger in Doha, Rae de Wet, told the ABC a delay of more than 24 hours was expected before they could get back to Perth, but little information had been provided.

She said she had already been in transit for more than 30 hours since leaving South Africa.

"It is incomprehensible that an international airport could face an issue of this nature, embarrassing really especially on an international scale," she said.

At Sydney Airport, Perth man Steven Dipane said his son had been at a baseball tournament in Lismore and he was trying to head home.

"They're going to book us in to a room for the night, and then get us on a plane to Melbourne tomorrow and then to Perth.

"It just delays it. I would have liked to be home tonight." 

Dieter Spurgeon's family is currently in Darwin after their flight home from a family holiday to Perth was delayed over 36 hours.

"We've contacted both Qantas and Perth airport and neither seem willing to reimburse us for an extra night's stay in Darwin," he said.

He said communication by both the airport and airline has been "horrendous".

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Arizona doctors can temporarily come to California to perform abortions for their patients under a new law signed Thursday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

California’s law is meant to give Arizonans an option to receive legal abortions from their doctor over the next several months. The move was a reaction to a recent Arizona Supreme Court decision to reinstate a law — first passed in 1864, but not enforced for decades — that bans nearly all abortions in Arizona, without exceptions for rape or incest.

The Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022 allowed states to set their own abortion laws. More than 20 states have since enforced abortion bans of varying degrees. In Arizona, it is still unclear exactly when — or if — the Civil War-era ban will be instituted. But the Democrats who control California’s Legislature didn’t want to take chances.

California’s new law, which takes effect immediately, allows licensed doctors in Arizona to come to California and perform abortions for their patients through the end of November.

The earliest the repeal could take effect is in the fall. The state Supreme Court granted a stay on enforcement until Sept. 26 , and it could further be delayed because of a 45-day stay granted in a separate but related case.

The Arizona state Legislature quickly voted to repeal the 1864 law, and Arizona’s Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs promptly signed it. But the repeal won’t take effect until 90 days after the Arizona state Legislature’s session ends, which usually happens in June or July.

Currently, Arizona law allows abortions up to 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Licensed Arizona doctors who want to perform abortions in California would still have to fill out an application. But if the doctors meet certain requirements, the law directs California regulators to approve their application within five business days.

“California stands ready to protect reproductive freedom,” Newsom said.

He vowed to make the state a “ sanctuary ” for people in other states seeking abortions. California has passed dozens of laws to protect abortion access, including setting aside $20 million in taxpayer money to help pay for patients in other states to travel to California to get an abortion.

The law Newsom signed on Thursday does not include new money to help Arizona patients travel to California for abortions. But Newsom partnered with the advocacy group Red Wine and Blue to raise money from private donors to help Arizona patients travel to California.

The group, headquartered in Ohio and launched by the Arizona Freedom Trust, seeks to organize suburban women. It had raised just over $111,000 toward its nearly $500,000 goal, according to its website.

Newsom and his Democratic allies in the state Legislature worked quickly to get this law passed. But some Republicans questioned the need for it, given the uncertainty around the enforcement of the Arizona law and the state’s top officials opposed to its implementation.

But the Democrats who control the California Legislature pressed on.

“Once again California has made it crystal clear for all who need or deliver essential reproductive care: We’ve got your back,” said state Sen. Nancy Skinner, a Democrat from Berkeley and the author of the bill.

The law says Arizona doctors would have to tell California regulators where they planned to perform abortions in the state. But the law bars California regulators from publishing any information on their website about Arizona doctors aside from the doctor’s name, status and license number.
