Fuego Volcano Eruption Guatemala 2018

The last major eruption was on June 3rd 2018. On this tragic day the Fuego Volcano erupted producing an ash column around 7km high. Pyroclastic flows and lahars descended the flanks of the volcano destroying several villages in their path. The official death toll was 19o with 256 missing (as of July 30th 2018). However the local communities estimate that around 2000 people died. The most tragic thing about the eruption is that with proper warning systems and education many of the deaths could have been avoided. Since the eruption lots of volcano monitoring equipment has been donated and many more studies are being conducted. These are looking at how to improve warning systems and educate the local people living in high risk areas so as to reduce loss of life in future eruptions. Click here for a more detailed account of the eruption.

Fuego Volcano Eruption: How does this affect hiking the volcano?

The Fuego Volcano’s activity varies constantly. Since the last major eruption on June 3rd it has returned to it’s “normal” activity levels over the last 5 years. This means several small eruptions a day; in the day you see the ash and at night you can see the red lava. On our Fuego Volcano hikes we actually spend most of our time on Acatenango Volcano. We hike up Volcan Acatenango and then traverse around until reaching our campsite taking the same route as our Acatenango Overnight Hike .

For the last part of the hike we descend to the saddle between Acatenango and Fuego and start climbing the Fuego Volcano itself. Due to the topography (there is a valley between our base camp on Acatenango and Fuego volcano) it is unlikely that we would be affected if Volcan Fuego were to erupt. This is because the pyroclastic flows and lahars follow the topography and flow down the flanks of Fuego. We are in contact with the local authorities monitoring the volcano and our guide always makes an assessment on reaching basecamp as to the safety of hiking over to Fuego. So rest assured we take all possible precautions to mitigate the risks involved with hiking an active volcano.

Acatenango Overnight, Fuego Overnight and Double Whammy tours: What´s the difference?

The Double Whammy Tour is a combination of our Acatenango Overnight Hike  and our Fuego Overnight Hike . On any of these trips the first and last parts are the same. To start with we all hike to the camp site together; this takes about 5-6hrs and we arrive at around 2 PM. Then the people doing the Fuego Overnight or Double Whammy head over to the shoulder of Fuego and come back to the camp site for dinner (3-4hr round-trip). We all have dinner and wine together and sit around the campfire! Early the next day those doing the Acatenango Overnight or Double Whammy hike up to the summit of Acatenango for sunrise (this is truly magical). Then they come back down to camp and we all have breakfast together, break camp, and head back to the volcano to take the shuttle back to Antigua arriving at about 12:30 – 1 PM.

If you are booked for either the Acatenango Overnight Hike or the Fuego Overnight Hike you can decide to upgrade to the Double Whammy when you get to our camp site. This gives you the opportunity to see how you a feeling physically and mentally after you have complete the first part of the hike and if you feel up to the challenge! You can pay the difference when you get back to our office in Antigua, Guatemala.

Soy Tours Antigua is the best pick to do this! The trekking is hard but they take enough rest, meals are good and the guides know what they are doing. When I got supersick the brought me down in the night because I needed to go down. Down I could take a shower and they gave me bed to sleep in untill the group was back. I am super thankfull that the took care of me so well.

My trek with Soy Tours Antigua is one of the best experiences I have ever had. The guides were fantastic, the meals were really tasty and filling. Everything is set up at base camp by the time you get there, so you don’t need to worry about that. I’m super unfit but I did it, and the views of Fuego erupting and the sunrise from the summit of Acatenango made it 100% worth it.

Go with Soy Tours Antigua, it was the most incredible experience of my travels to date. The guides were amazing and organized, our tents to be set up by the time we reached base camp (a real benefit not having to carry tents) as it is a tough hike, but the views are more than worth it! Everything was really well organized from start to finish and I couldn’t recommend him more. The money also goes back to advancing the community.

Acatenango Volcano Hike: Volcan De Fuego In Guatemala

The Acatenango volcano hike is a bucket list trek in Antigua, Guatemala where you can camp on top of a mountain and see frequent live eruptions from a nearby volcano called the ‘Volcan De Fuego’ (which means Volcano of Fire)!

You can do the Acatenango hike with a guided group in 1, 2, or 3 days, although the most common way to do it is a 2 day 1 night trek, which usually gives you enough time to see eruptions from Volcán De Fuego during the daytime and also the glowing red fireworks at night.

Is it worth it? Absolutely! Where else in the world can you camp this close to an actively erupting volcano and take pictures at a safe distance? Not many places. The Volcan De Fuego puts on a spectacular show, with small eruptions every 15-30 minutes!

Guided tour prices are very reasonable, and one of the great things about trekking Acatenango is that it’s very safe. However, this is still a high elevation hike with lots of challenge, distance, and elevation gain, plus you’ll have to cope with a bit of cold weather and possibly some degree of altitude sickness.

This travel blog will explain how to do the Acatenango volcano hike, what to bring, best time to hike, which trekking guides and tour companies to use, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Where Is Acatenango & Volcan De Fuego?

The Acatenango volcano is located west of Guatemala City, overlooking the town of Antigua.

Most people base themselves in Antigua for this hike, since it has plenty of hotels and restaurants, and it’s only about 30 kilometers from the volcano (a 1.5 hour drive).

About Volcan De Fuego

The Volcanes De Fuego is the star of this hike. While Acatenango is an inactive volcano, Fuego is highly active and it sits right across from Acatenango, far enough to be safe for camping, but close enough to give you amazing views of the eruptions.

The Fuego volcano usually erupts once every 15 to 30 minutes, although it can sometimes do shorter or longer intervals. During my 3 day hike, it was erupting every 10 minutes on the first day. By the second day it had slowed down to every 30 minutes, and on the third day it was only erupting every hour, but each eruption was enormous.

The intervals are not completely predictable, but if you spend a couple days on the mountain summit then you can almost be certain that you’ll get to witness multiple eruptions.

Acatenango Sample Itinerary

Here’s a sample itinerary for a 2 day, 1 night Acatenango volcano hike:

  • 07:00 – Meet up for briefing, preparing gear, etc
  • 08:00 – Transport by bus from Antigua to the trailhead
  • 09:15 – Start hiking
  • 14:00 – Reach Acatenango base camp
  • 15:00 – Start the extra hike to Volcán De Fuego (optional) if weather is favorable
  • 19:30 – Dinner at base camp
  • 04:30 – Summit hike for sunrise (optional)
  • 07:00 – Breakfast at base camp
  • 08:00 – Start descending
  • 10:00 – Reach the trailhead and start driving to Antigua
  • 11:15 – Arrival in Antigua

Of course, this is just a sample itinerary and your trek may not go exactly like this, but the 2 day treks normally tend to follow this general pattern.

Acatenango Trekking: What To Expect

• starting the acatenango volcano hike.

The Acatenango trek starts with a steep uphill walk on a dirt path that takes you through Guatemalan farmlands and jungle. The grade is tough and unrelenting from the beginning. In fact, this first section is actually one of the hardest parts of the hike!

The main path is never dangerous in terms of cliffs or drop-offs, it’s just a grueling workout. For most of the hike, you’ll also be hot and sweaty, and trying to shed every layer possible.

Once you reach the jungle, the grade is a bit more manageable and you have some nicer views, plus more shade from the sun. You’ll pass a couple of makeshift drink stands along the way, where you can buy snacks and drinks if you think you might need more.

• Acatenango Base Camp

After awhile, you’ll reach Acatenango base camp and witness your first eruptions from Volcan De Fuego in the distance! You’ll most likely hear it before you see it.

The size and amenities of your camp will depend on which trekking company you book with, and some are higher quality than others. A warm campfire is a given. Some companies even have little cabins, while others have tents.

This doesn’t make a huge difference since most people will only be staying one night anyway, and if we’re being honest you probably won’t get an amazing sleep regardless of how nice your camp is.

The important thing about base camp is that it has a direct view of the eruptions at Fuego — you feel like you can reach out and touch it!

• Volcan De Fuego Saddle Hike

After you reach Acatenango base camp, your trekking company will usually give you an option to hike over to Volcan De Fuego and see the eruptions up close! This was the highlight of the whole trip for me. Roughly half of the trekkers in our group went on this expedition, and we were all so glad we did.

For this journey, you will temporarily leave the comfort of your beloved camp and hike down the steep and sandy slopes of Acatenango, cross the saddle between these two Guatemala volcanoes, and then climb up the side of the Fuego volcano until you’re standing on a flat ridge less than 1 kilometer from the eruptions.

At this distance, the eruptions sound like bombs going off, and you can feel the Earth rumbling under your feet. If you go in the evening, you can also see the red lava rocks exploding on the side of the mountain.

It’s impossible to describe how amazing this is, but it requires good fitness. You don’t need any technical skills for this part of the hike, but it’s still going to be very hard for anyone because you’re already exhausted from hiking to Acatenango base camp earlier in the day.

If you still have plenty of energy left over when you reach base camp, I would HIGHLY recommend doing the extra hike to Fuego. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my travels around the world .

This is one part of the hike where you’ll want to bring layers of clothing. It can get very cold on the Fuego saddle, especially in the evening if there’s a strong wind and the sun goes down. Come prepared!

• Acatenango Summit Sunrise

Last, but not least, there’s the extra hike to the summit of Acatenango, which most trekking companies do at sunrise. That means a wakeup call at around 4:30 AM. This hike is not near as hard as the Fuego hike, but it’s still a good workout with plenty of slippery sand.

The sunrise on top of Acatenango is incredibly beautiful, with a sea of puffy clouds and great views of Volcan De Fuego erupting, plus you can usually spot Volcan De Agua in the distance.

If you want a picture of yourself (or your group) with the eruption behind you, the summit is one of the best places to do it! It’s very busy in the morning, but there’s more than enough room for everyone to stand and take their pictures.

The Acatenango summit is also one of the coldest parts of the hike. We even saw some icicles up there in December. There’s a lot of wind at the summit, but you can duck into the crater for shelter while you wait for sunrise, so it’s manageable.

• Acatenango Hike Difficulty: How Hard Is It?

The Acatenango hike is hard. Very hard. The overall combination of high altitude, a very steep grade, loose rocks that sink under your feet like sand, and cold weather all come together to make this a really tough one.

However, even if you only make it to base camp, the hike is still worth it. You can see amazing views of the eruptions from the camp site, so it’s not really necessary to do the extra hike to Fuego or to the Acatenango summit unless you still have energy and want to see the action even better.

You don’t have to be super fit to make it to Acatenango base camp. The guides give you plenty of breaks along the way, so you can go at your own pace. We had several people in our group who were definitely out of shape, and they still made it to base camp just fine.

Another way you can make the hike easier is to hire a local porter to help carry your stuff. The price for this is around 150 Quetzales ($20 USD) depending on the weight of your bag, and they will carry up to 13 kilos (30 pounds) for you up the mountain.

Acatenango Volcano Hike Guatemala Volcan De Fuego Summit Eruption

Eruption views from the summit. One of the best parts of the Acatenango hike.

• Acatenango Distance & Time

The one way hiking distance from the trailhead to Acatenango base camp is about 4 miles, and it normally takes 4 or 5 hours depending on your pace.

If you decide to go from base camp to the summit for sunrise, that takes another 1 to 1.5 hours. Going back down from base camp to the parking lot is a lot quicker and easier, and only takes 2 or 3 hours.

If you decide to do the extra hike from Acatenango base camp to the Volcan De Fuego saddle to see the eruptions up close, that adds another 3 miles (roundtrip), which takes about 4 hours total. It’s tough. We all struggled with it.

All in all, if you do the entire hike to the Acatenango base camp, summit, and Volcan De Fuego saddle, you’re looking at 10 to 13 hours of total hiking. That’s no joke. However, if you only go to Acatenango base camp and skip the other sections, it’s quite a bit easier.

The good news is that you don’t have to make any kind of booking for the extra hikes. You can wait and decide if you want to do them after you reach base camp. If you’re not feeling it, you can rest at the camp instead and enjoy the Guatemala volcano views.

Acatenango Volcano Hike Guatemala Volcan De Fuego Base Camp Summit Sunrise

Sunrise at the summit of Acatenango

• Acatenango Elevation/Height

The Acatenango summit has an elevation of 3,976 meters (13,045 feet) above sea level, and the Volcan De Fuego has a slightly lower elevation of 3,768 meters (12,362 feet). Base camp is around 3,500 meters (11,000 feet).

That means there’s less oxygen, and when you’re hiking, you’ll be huffing and puffing to catch your breath with each step. It definitely adds an extra layer of challenge to the hike.

The elevation at Acatenango is high enough to cause altitude sickness (AMS) for some people, so you might run into at least some degree of headaches, crappy sleep, etc. If your symptoms get too severe, you may have to descend and go back to a lower altitude.

I haven’t heard of people getting dangerously sick with AMS on the Acatenango volcano hike, although I wouldn’t completely rule it out. We had one young guy in our trekking group who was throwing up a lot, but he improved right away when we descended the next day. Keep in mind, your likelihood of getting AMS is not affected by age or physical fitness. You can be young and perfectly fit, and still get altitude sickness.

If you’re coming from sea level, it’s recommended that you spend at least 48 hours in Antigua before the hike to help you acclimatize to altitude. The town of Antigua is 1,545 meters (5,069 feet) above sea level, and Guatemala City is about the same, so being in one of those places gives your body a chance to adjust a little bit.

With that said, I’ve heard of many people doing the Acatenango hike without much acclimatizing at all, and they were still fine. I did the hike with two different groups of 20 people, and most of us had only minor AMS symptoms. Plus, if you do a day hike at Acatenango instead of overnight camping, then it’s not really a concern anyway. You’ll be on the way back down before you even start to feel the effects.

Staying hydrated is supposed to help with altitude sickness. You’ll want to drink lots of water before and during the hike. You’ll also want to avoid alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, and sleeping pills because they can make the symptoms worse.

If you have spare time before the Acatenango hike, a great warmup hike to do for acclimatizing is the Pacaya volcano trek , which is another one near Antigua. It’s not as spectacular as Fuego and you can’t usually see active eruptions, but it’s still a fun way to train.

The Pacaya hike is easier, shorter, and cheaper than the Acatenango volcano hike, but it still has a high enough elevation to help adjust your body to altitude. Pacaya’s summit is 2,552 meters (8,373 feet), although most tours don’t go all the way to the summit. You can book the Pacaya trek online here .

Acatenango Volcano Hike Guatemala Volcan De Fuego Eruption

Boom! Acatenango volcano hike

• Acatenango Elevation Gain

The vertical elevation gain on the hike to Acatenango base camp is about 1,110 meters (3,650 feet). If you include the summit push, it’s a whopping total of 1,615 meters (5,300 feet). More than a mile straight up!

If you do the extra hike to the Volcán De Fuego saddle, that adds another 480 meters (1,600 feet) roundtrip, because you’re going downhill and uphill both ways when you walk between the two volcanoes.

In total, if you do the entire hike to Acatenango summit plus the Fuego saddle detour, you’re looking at a grueling elevation gain of almost 2,100 meters (7,000 feet)! Insane!

• Acatenango Weather

The daytime temperatures at Acatenango base camp are pleasant and even warm if the sun is shining. However, the temperatures overnight can get quite a bit colder than in Antigua or the rest of Guatemala.

In the day time when you first start the hike from Antigua, it may be a nice warm 21 °C (70 °F), but by night time at base camp it can drop below 0 °C (32 °F), and in some cases can even get as low as -5 °C (23 °F). It can also be very windy, especially at the summit for sunrise.

On January 8, 2017, six Guatemalan tourists died of hypothermia on the Acatenango volcano hike after they came unprepared and got caught in a severe cold snap. I don’t want to scare you by mentioning that, and the trek is plenty safe as long as you’re prepared, but don’t underestimate the cold!

Most tour companies will provide you with plenty of warm weather gear to borrow, rent, or buy for the Acatenango hike, so you’ll definitely want to take advantage of that. You might also want to keep an eye on any unusual weather warnings for the day you hike, although it’s rare and your guides will probably stay on top of that for you.

You can check a weather forecast for the Acatenango mountain summit here , including factors like wind, rain, clouds, and temperatures. This should be a bit more accurate than the average weather report, although it’s still not perfect, so keep that in mind.

What To Bring

  • Layers: Bring a good jacket and extra layers for the Acatenango hike. I had a t-shirt, two sweatshirts, and a light down jacket. However, you’ll want to start the hike in a t-shirt and wear the layers later.
  • Headwear: You’ll want a warm beanie hat that covers your ears.
  • Gloves: I wore fingerless gloves so I could work my camera while still staying reasonably warm. My hands were the coldest part of my body on this hike.
  • Footwear: Hiking shoes with good grip are ideal for the Acatenango volcano hike. You’ll be walking on slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines at times.
  • Poncho: If you climb Acatenango or the Fuego volcano during the rainy season (especially June through September), you will definitely want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Water: There’s no potable water source on the mountain. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Guides will advise you to bring at least 4 liters of water for the Acatenango hike, and another 500 mL if you plan to do the extra Volcan De Fuego hike to the saddle.
  • Snacks: Again, even though most tours include free meals, the quality varies and you may still be hungry after such a whopper hike. I brought snack bars and beef jerky from the U.S. so I would have something extra. I ate all of it and wished for more. YMMV.
  • Headlight: Acatenango trekking tours will provide cheapo headlights, but you’ll at least want to bring some extra batteries. A headlight is absolutely required for the Fuego saddle hike and also the Acatenango summit, because you could get hurt if you’re walking in the dark.
  • Powerbank: If you plan to use your phone for taking pictures or as a flashlight, then you might want to bring a small power bank. I like Anker , they’re tough and high quality.
  • Camera: Any camera with a bit of zoom is ideal, so you can take great pictures of the Volcan De Fuego eruptions from Acatenango base camp. Most of my pics on this page were taken with a kit lens. If you do the extra hike over to the Fuego saddle to see the eruptions up close, then you’ll probably want to switch to a wide angle lens for that.

Summit Sunrise

Normally the best time to hike Acatenango is during the dry season, but you can hike it all year round.

Best Time To Hike Acatenango

The best time to hike Acatenango is during the dry season in Guatemala, which runs from November to April. It’s clearer and less likely to rain during these months, so overall it’s a great time for mountain trekking.

The rainy season in Guatemala runs from May to October, and there is quite a bit more rainfall, but it tends to come in the afternoon. Mornings and evenings are usually clear, even in the rainy months. This season may not be ideal for trekking Acatenango, but you can definitely do it. You’re just more likely to get wet.

As always, since you’re dealing with a mountain, the weather isn’t completely predictable at any time of year, and you could have bad weather in the dry season or good weather in the rainy season.

If you’re worried about clouds blocking your view of the Fuego eruptions, I would book a longer Acatenango trip so you have more time at the summit and more chances to see the fireworks.

In conclusion, dry season is best for trekking Acatenango if you have a choice, but it can be hiked at any time of year, and the small eruptions are happening at Volcan De Fuego all year round except for occasional brief pauses.

Acatenango Deaths & Safety

The safety record on the Acatenango volcano hike is pretty spotless so far. I don’t know of any deaths or injuries from the volcano in the many years it’s been open for trekking.

Of course, there is always going to be some risk involved in hiking near an active volcano, but the camp is located well away from the eruptions, so you’re not really in the line of fire even if there was some kind of major eruption.

If you want to be super careful, you could skip the extra hike to Fuego and just watch the eruptions from base camp instead. I’ve never heard of anyone getting hurt on the Fuego hike, but that would probably be the most likely place for something to happen.

The other question is robbery. As you might know, Guatemala is not the safest country in the world, and there was a rash of armed robberies on the Acatenango hike back in 2007-2009. However, it seems like safety has improved on the hike ever since they started charging an entrance fee, and I haven’t heard of any crimes like that happening here in at least a decade.

This mountain is providing a lot of income for the local communities in Guatemala nowadays (easily millions of US dollars when you add up all the trekking companies and entrance fees), so it’s in everyone’s best interest for them to let tourists hike in peace and not do anything to disturb the cash cow.

If you want some extra peace of mind, you could also bring a hidden travel belt (like this one on Amazon ) and put some of your valuables in it. That’s what I did. During the first part of the hike, the views are pretty boring so I stowed my phone, cash, and credit card in a hidden belt to be extra safe.

With that said, it was a great hike and we didn’t have any crime issues at all. Even though Guatemala doesn’t have a very good reputation on safety, I think it’s improved a lot in the last 20 years, and still seems to be getting better.

Other Tips For The Acatenango Hike

  • Bugs: We didn’t have any problems with mosquitoes or other bugs on the Acatenango hike. The elevation is too high for mosquitoes so it’s not something to worry about. I didn’t even bring spray.
  • Cell Service: I had a little bit of cell service/phone reception at Acatenango base camp with Claro and Tigo via my T-Mobile roaming package, and occasional spotty reception on the hiking trail itself. It was good enough to send occasional texts to my family and let them know I was okay, but it wasn’t anything very reliable. I’m sure this also depends on where your base camp is located on the mountain, so some treks may not have any reception at the camp.
  • Drones: You can fly drones at Acatenango, and there aren’t any restrictions that I know of. I saw several tourists doing it. However, it can be a bit tricky with the wind, so you’ll want to keep that in mind. Plus there are lots of other people camping on the mountain, so you’ll want to be considerate and keep some distance.
  • Entrance Fee: The current entrance fee for trekking Acatenango is 110 Quetzales ($14 USD) per person. You pay this at a Guatemalan government booth partway through the hike. However, your trekking company may already include this fee in the total price of the hike, so that’s something you can check.

Hiking Acatenango Without A Guide

For the average hiker, there are many reasons I wouldn’t recommend hiking Acatenango without a guide: navigation, logistics, convenience, safety, etc. You’ll have a much better and more enjoyable experience if you book a guided tour and go with a group of fun likeminded people.

With that said, it’s certainly possible to hike Acatenango without a guide if you’re determined and have prior experience with the route. One of the challenges will be finding a good spot to camp, since I’ve heard the trekking companies are pretty territorial about space on the mountainside.

Is The Acatenango Hike Worth It?

Yes, the Acatenango volcano hike is absolutely worth it! It’s bucket list material. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Even though the hike to Acatenango and Fuego is one of the hardest hikes I’ve done, the payoffs match the difficulty. In my opinion, there is no question that this is one of the top 10 best hikes in the world. It might even be in the top 5 for me.

To stand next to an erupting volcano, feel the rumbling in the ground, and watch the exploding lava rocks is just priceless. Outside of Guatemala and Indonesia , I’m not sure if I know of any places in the world where you can do that.

Is Acatenango Open / Closed?

Yes, Acatenango is currently open to tourists! I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.

The mountain is rarely closed to the public, and that would generally only happen temporarily if there’s some kind of extremely unusual volcanic activity or other safety concerns.

Happy travels!

Two Unique Ways to Experience the Acatenango Volcano Overnight Hike

Acatenango overnight hike: comfort glamping.

Trek Guatemala's Acatenango Overnight Hike - Base Camp Fuego Volcano Eruption

If you’re ready to experience Antigua’s impressive Acatenango Volcano but prefer a bit of pampering to go along with your adventure, then this is the trip for you! Our Acatenango Base Camp features large safari-style tents that fit 2-4 guests comfortably & are equipped with cots, pillows/pillow cases, and bedside tables.

Acatenango Overnight Hike: Adventure Camping

Trek Guatemala - Acatenango Overnight Hike - Adventure Camping - Volcano View

Acatenango Volcano Overnight Hike

Antigua’s Acatenango Volcano is a remarkable climb that stands tall at 13,041 ft / 3,976 m, and it is a must-do for most adventure travelers in Guatemala. The hike not only provides panoramic views of the entire region but also offers a unique vantage point to witness the nearby (and highly active!) Fuego Volcano has been erupting continuously since the Spanish conquistadors arrived 500 years ago.

Our Acatenango Volcano Overnight Hike offers the best opportunity to experience this incredible natural wonder. Hikers get to witness awe-inspiring nighttime views of flowing lava and catch the sunrise the next morning from the summit of Acatenango. While the hike is demanding, even for the most seasoned hikers, our Acatenango Volcano Overnight Hike is the perfect choice for adventure seekers looking to experience the best that Guatemala has to offer. This is an unforgettable overnight hike that you won’t want to miss!

Day Prior: Trip Briefing

Before the trip, we’ll meet with you in person to give you a pre-trip briefing at our store in central Antigua (located right behind the main Cathedral). During this briefing, we’ll go over everything you need to know about the trip, including what to pack, what to expect, and any last-minute details or questions you may have. Prefer that we come to you? Then be sure to check out our “Signature Service” add-on that also includes pick up and drop off from your location before & after the trip.

Day 1 : Hike To Camp

You depart from our store in Antigua at 8:00 am. The store also features a great café for last-minute coffee and snacks. You then set off in a private shuttle on a comfortable one-hour drive to the Mayan village of La Soledad and the Acatenango trailhead. The ascent up the 5,000 ft / 1,525 m trail takes us through four distinct ecosystems, each with its own unique charm. First up is a tapestry of fertile agricultural fields, where local farmers harvest everything from corn to snow peas. It’s a great introduction to the local way of life.

As you continue on the trail, you’ll enter the old-growth tropical cloud forest. It’s a magical place, teeming with a diversity of flora and fauna, and providing hikers with shade and comfort as you push up the steep slope.

Emerging from the cloud forest, you’ll enter a sparse high-alpine forest that opens up to reveal views of six additional volcanoes. It’s the perfect spot for a scenic trail lunch, where you can take in the breathtaking vistas.

After lunch, you’ll make the final push of the day and climb above the tree line into the fourth microclimate – a wind-swept and mystical volcanic terrain. Upon arrival to our Acatenango Base Camp at 12,300 ft / 3,750 m, you’ll find spacious safari-style canvas tents waiting for you with comfortable cots, pillows, and sweeping views of the Antigua Valley and Fuego Volcano. Then, you’ll be served appetizers and a hot dinner followed by coffee, tea, and even marshmallow “S’mores” over the campfire. Our Acatenango Base Camp looks directly over Fuego Volcano, and your evening will be spent gasping at volcanic eruptions and staring up at the mesmerizing sky full of stars above. It’s an unforgettable experience!

Day 2: Summiting Acatenango

After early morning coffee, tea, and fresh banana bread…you’ll embark on a 45-minute ascent to the summit of Acatenango. The climb may be steep, but the breathtaking views of Fuego Volcano, the Antigua Valley, and the Guatemalan highlands stretching to Mexico make it all worthwhile. At the summit, you will have a full 360-degree panoramic view to take in.

After spending approximately an hour at the top (depending on weather and timing), its back to base camp for a delicious breakfast. Then, you begin the three-hour descent back down the volcano, arriving at La Soledad and our waiting transportation by mid-day. Groups usually return to Antigua by early afternoon (~1:00 pm) with plenty of time to enjoy a celebratory beer, cappuccino, or a well-deserved siesta. Congratulations on conquering the volcano!

HIKE THE ACATENANGO VOLCANO

There’s no other place on earth quite like Acatenango . Sitting at 3,976m next to a super active Volcan Fuego and overlooking at other 8 stratovolcanoes, lakes and ocean on the horizon.

Embark on out-of-this-world adventure with our two-day Acatenango Volcano Hike. We will explore the majestic countryside near Antigua, trekking up slopes covered in pine and cypress trees until we arrive at the summit of this breathtaking volcano! Admire formidable views of Volcán de Fuego regularly barrel clouding towards the sky, as well as impressive views over Lake Atitlán from your highest point.

ACATENANGO 2 DAY HIKE

Image

Join us on our 2 day volcano hike to Acatenango . The team has developed a tour package so you can get the best experience on your trip to Guatemala . We have something in mind for the average person to be able to hike 3.5 hours up and 2 hours down the Volcano and be able to capture one of the most incredible volcanoes on earth . Climbing to 3,976m is no easy feat but we have a service that will help you get there in every step of the way. We have you covered in every aspect from food to gear, camp, transportation and more.

BASE CAMP FACILITIES: We guarantee to provide you with the best base camp facilities on the volcano. We have built A frame cabins as shelter for eruptions and weather. Stay warm with the cold temperatures and strong winds this volcano presents. In case of an eruption with the magnitude of the one in June 2018, you can remain safe inside. In addition to the cabins we also provide you with a dinner room and a comfy chair fire pit with a view to Volcano de Fuego and the stars.

FUEGO HIKE (EXTRA Q200): In addition to the Acatenango hike , we are offering an add-on hike that compliments the original hike. After you reach the Acatenango basecamp, we go to the Fuego Volcano summit for sunset in order to be as close as 150m to the exploding crater, with it’s beautiful and unique view. The hike is harder as it adds 3 hours of round trip hike. You are required to be at the base camp by 2:30 pm for departure. This addition to the tour costs an extra Q200. No rush on deciding if you want to hike to Fuego when you book, you can decide if you are going when you reach our basecamp, and if you go to Fuego Volcano you will have to pay the Q200 the next day when you come back to our agency in Antigua. Our minimum to make the tour run is 4 people. PLEASE FOLLOW OUR GUIDES INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUEGO HIKE, IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!

When we set off to make Wicho & Charlie’s, we made a promise to always give back, protect the environment and animals. There’s no better improvement than to make the menu plant based. Keeping in mind the right amount of nutrients and calories needed on this hike, we made a Plant Based menu (and GF) for all our hikers. Be at ease as we didn’t sacrifice flavor and never will. The food we provide is enough for the average person, hiking Acatenango. If you plan on hiking Fuego and Acatenango , we recommend bringing additional +500cal.

O.M.G.! Honestly the most wholesome experience. It was my second time climbing the Acatenango and I could not have wished for a better tour operator. From beginning to end I felt in such good hands. It is a challenging hike but so worth it. And because of our professional guide, the comfortable and beautiful (!!!) cabins & the great food we've had, I can only recommend this operator to literally everyone. Do it!!!

The best operator for the volcano hike!

volcan de fuego tours

Wonderful experience! Everything is super well organized by a motivated team. From good food to a range of material that you can borrow. After a tough, but beautiful trip you arrive at the well-kept mountain hut. Magnificent to get from your bed to the erupting volcano! Lava Trails is an absolute must!!

Everything is super well organized by a motivated team.

YOU HAVE TO DO THIS!! I’ve had such an incredible trip with Lava Trails. The guide was super knowledgeable, food was superb, but nothing tops the jaw-dropping views you get from the camp and your bed at the top! Truly something unique that you cannot miss out on when you are in Guatemala! Highly recommend!

Nothing tops the jaw-dropping views you get from your bed!

volcan de fuego tours

I cannot describe how amazing my experience with Lava Trails was!! The views of the volcano are unmatched from the cabins. And if you are not very prepared to climb the volcano, the Lava trails team can lend you everything you need. They also gave us 3 meals, snacks, tea and wine. And the very cozy cabins did not get cold and incredible views. Without a doubt I will live this experience again with Lava Trails.

The views of the volcano are unmatched from the cabins.

volcan de fuego tours

Wow! The Lava Trails cabañas really are on another level! From your bed you have an excellent view of the Fuego volcano while you are nice and warm in your own sleeping bag on the mattress. Everything was arranged down to the last detail and the food was top notch. Highly recommended!!

The Lava Trails cabañas really are on another level!

You will not find a more beautiful and better accommodation on the volcano! The beds are comfortable and from bed you have the most amazing view of the volcano. In addition, the guide spoke very good English and the crew did everything they could to ensure that everyone had an unforgettable stay. In short: a 10/10 experience! I would recommend this to all my friends.

From bed you have the most amazing view of the volcano.

volcan de fuego tours

I have hiked Acatenango a total of 5 times and this experience with Lava Trails beat every one of those times. The cabins are another level - I truly enjoyed being inside warming up and chatting with my friends while having a floor to ceiling window view of the erupting volcano! Even during the night, there was no need for me to get out of my bed to see and experience Volcan de Fuego do its show. Definitely recommend it - there is nothing like it on Acatenango.

-Daniel

Recomiendo encarecidamente V-Hiking tours.

Inolvidable, esperamos volver a verlos algún día. – Oceane

¡No puedo decir suficientes cosas buenas! Kathryn B

Jeff A

Aleisha W

What to Expect

4x4 off-road ride:.

Our group leaves from the Old Town Outfitters Shop at 12:00PM, where you can fill up your water bottles and purchase any additional gear you might need. We will leave Antigua in our 4X4 car and drive through neighboring towns, getting a glimpse of the local life outside of Antigua. After about an hour’s drive, transitioning from concrete to dirt, we will arrive at the entrance of a farm sitting at the base of Volcán Acatenango. From there we will enter the dirt farm roads, spending the next hour traversing the maze of farmland and forest as we head up some hills you will doubt we can climb.

While we will be offered some amazing views on our ride, the extra beauty of this alternate route is that we cut off about 3½ hours of the typical hike, leaving a far easier trip to the summit, and giving us plenty of extra time. We will leave our car at an elevation of 11,483 feet (3,500 meters).

Day 1: Hike To Camp

After we park our car and lace up our hiking shoes, we will turn south along Acatenango’s ridge, taking a beautiful trail through temperate coniferous forest and tropical dry forest. This storm-beaten tree-line was caught in a forest fire a decade back, leaving behind many starch-white petrified trees and a unique-looking forest. Our trail is very moderate, with only a handful of uphill sections, as we make our way to camp. Our hike provides views of Volcán Agua towering above the Antigua valley, and as we approach camp we will get out first views of the spectacularly active Volcán Fuego.

Our campsite is perched just below the tree line, with sweeping views of the Antigua valley and Volcán Fuego. After setting up camp, hikers are free to rest, relax and enjoy their surroundings while our guide prepares a fresh camp dinner with hot drinks at 12,303 feet (3,750 meters). Weather permitting we will have a campfire and spend the night under the stars hoping for a high-altitude firework show from Fuego.

Day 2: Summiting Acatenango

In the morning, after an early camp breakfast, our group embarks on an hour-long ascent to the summit, across a sand and gravel scree-trail dotted with dwarf pine trees and high alpine mosses. The trail up is the steepest we will have seen and leads to the rocky summit exposed to the gusty and cold winds which constantly pass over Acatenango’s peak.

At the summit, our group will rest and enjoy unparalleled 360-degree views of the entirety of the Guatemalan highlands – all the way to the border of Mexico. Here we will enjoy the views from the crater, rest, and take in all that we have seen. When we have finished, we will begin our hike back down to our car, a little over an hour-long, and we will switch back to some more 4X4 adventure as we head down the steep road. We will arrive back in Antigua around mid-day at the most with plenty of time for you to enjoy the delights of the old Spanish colonial capital (around 12:00PM).

The Thrilling Volcan De Acatenango Hike In Antigua Guatemala

volcan de fuego tours

Written by BELLA FALK

Fuego volcano erupting. Fuego means fire in Spanish.

As you journey around Guatemala, you’ll soon hear people talking about the Volcan de Acatenango hike. From the hostels of Antigua to the bars of Flores, just about every traveller has either done it, is planning to do it, or wants to climb Acatenango volcano but isn’t quite brave enough.

There’s a reason this is one of the top things to do in all of Central America. From the slopes of Acatenango you get a front row seat to the eruptions of Volcan de Fuego, one of the world’s most active volcanos. Fuego erupts about every 15-20 minutes, shooting ash and fiery red hot lava into the sky in a rare and thrilling spectacle that is absolutely unmissable.

Spectacular views of Volcan Fuego from Acatenango volcano

Having heard the stories and seen some jaw-dropping photos, I wanted to hike up Acatenango volcano and witness the power of Volcan de Fuego myself. Not just to see it, but to try to take some amazing volcanic eruption photos of my own.

Of course, I had a lot of questions, and a few concerns. How hard would it be? Which is the best tour company to use? What should I pack? And how on earth do you photograph an erupting volcano at night?

I thought I could manage the climb itself; I’d hiked up Santa Maria volcano in Guatemala only a few weeks previously, so I was pretty sure I had the stamina. But the weather on Acatenango is notoriously unpredictable, and I went in May, which is the start of rainy season. The forecast was iffy and predicted to get worse. What if I lugged my camera gear all that way and couldn’t take a single photo?

I did a lot of research, read a lot of information, and spoke to everyone I met who’d done it. And then I went and climbed Acatenango myself – and as you can see from the photos, it was incredible.

So here is everything I learned about hiking Acatenango and Fuego volcanos, and answers to all the questions I had before I went, and all the questions that other people have asked me since. I hope it helps you plan your own Acatenango tour.

This post should cover everything you need to know about hiking up Acatenango Volcano in Guatemala. I paid for this trip myself in full. Prices are correct at the time of writing.

What is the Acatenango Volcano hike?

The Acatenango Volcano hike is, as the name suggests, a hike you can do to reach the summit of Acatenango, a volcano located close to the city of Antigua in Guatemala .

But somewhat confusingly, the purpose of climbing Acatenango is not really to reach the summit. That’s an added extra that you can choose to do if you like, but it’s not the main reason people go.

The Thrilling Volcan De Acatenango Hike In Antigua Guatemala

Instead, the main attraction is Volcan de Fuego, which sits right next door to Acatenango and is one the most active volcanos in the world. From your campsite high on the slopes of Acatenango, you get a front-row seat to Fuego’s regular eruptions and, if conditions are right, the chance to witness the awesome power of an erupting volcano as it shoots lava bombs and ash into the sky.

There are very few places in the world where you can safely – and somewhat reliably – watch an erupting volcano, so it’s no surprise that hiking Volcan de Acatenango is one of Guatemala’s top tourist attractions.

A huge eruption from Volcan de Acatenango in Antigua Guatemala

Where is Volcan de Acatenango?

Volcan de Acatenango is about 12 miles (20 km) from the city of Antigua, Guatemala. It’s one of 37 volcanos in the country, and the most popular due to its proximity to Volcan de Fuego and the large number of tour companies offering the chance to climb it and camp at the top.

What does the Volcán Acatenango climb involve?

The Acatenango volcano hike has four stages:

  • Stage One: The first challenge is to hike for about four hours up to base camp, where you’ll spend the night. It’s from here that you can get a clear view of Volcan de Fuego erupting directly across the valley in front of you. If you don’t want to walk any further, you can just spend the evening watching the incredible eruptions exploding into the night sky, and head back down again the next morning.
  • Stage Two: Those with a bit more energy can opt to do the Fuego add-on, which involves another two hours of hiking down the other side of Acatenango and up Fuego itself, to a viewing spot only about 500 meters from the active crater. This will get you much closer to the eruptions, but you’ll need a fair bit of stamina as you’ll also need to hike another two hours back to base camp, this time in the dark.

Hikers walking down from Acatenango volcano to Fuego volcano. This takes about two hours each way.

  • Stage Three: This is the chance to summit Acatenango itself and view the sunrise from the top. This involves waking up at about 4 am and hiking another hour up to the top of Acatenango, and then half an hour back down to base camp.
  • Stage Four: Your final descent, another two to three hours back down the way you came to the trailhead, before getting a bus back to Antigua.

The Fuego ascent and the Acatenango summit are optional extras, and you don’t need to decide if you want to do them until you are already at base camp.

Acatenango tour companies

The first thing you’ll need to do to plan your hike up Acatenango is pick a tour company. Most hotels and hostels, plus numerous travel agencies in Antigua, offer trips to hike Acatenango, but if you book through one of them you won’t necessarily know which company you are going with or the levels of service you’ll be getting.

For that reason, I recommend you choose one of the following dedicated hiking tour companies, all of whom get good reviews and have several years of experience.

  • Wicho and Charlies. One of the most popular companies due to the fact they have sleeping cabins instead of tents. They’re also reported to have the best gear, though I couldn’t compare or check this.
  • Ox Expeditions. Another highly recommended company, they also have cabins, and for those who don’t like going to the loo al fresco they have basic toilets too. From the photos I’ve seen their campsite looks to be a bit lower down the mountain with more trees in front, but I haven’t been there so I can’t be 100% sure of this.
  • Tropicana. Based out of the hostel of the same name. They have large, fixed cabin-type tents to sleep in, each of which sleeps 15.
  • V Hiking. Budget option and I’ve heard mixed reports, but two people I met who hiked with them said they had a good experience.
  • Old Town Outfitters .
  • CA travellers .

Wicho and Charlies are one of the main companies offering overnight hikes to Acatenango and Fuego

Preparing for the Acatenango and Fuego hike

Based on the positive reviews I’d read, and particularly tempted by the sound of the cosy huts, I booked with Wicho and Charlies. I was told to be at their office at 7 am, ready to meet the group and sort out gear and food.

I was wearing gym leggings, a sports bra, a t-shirt, and a pair of trail-running trainers. I was also carrying a change of clothes, one thermal baselayer top, and my packable light down jacket. This is nowhere near enough warm clothing for the top of the volcano, but it’s all I had.

The Acatenango tour companies will rent or lend you warm clothes for hiking up the volcano

At the shop we were issued with additional gear. The price for the hike included the loan of one or more jackets/fleeces, gloves, warm hat, buff, and scarf. You could also rent hiking poles (absolutely vital!), headlamp, socks, backpacks, and other bits of gear if needed.

I had heard that Wicho and Charlies had the best selection of clothes, but I have to say I was not that impressed and if theirs is the best then I dread to think what the other companies offer. Most of the gear, while just about adequate, was old and tatty, and a lot of the jackets were very small, and many had zips that didn’t work properly. It was a bit of a free-for-all trying to get the semi-decent stuff or find something that fitted, but we did manage and eventually everyone had enough.

I took an additional fleece and a padded jacket, plus hat, gloves and scarf, and I was still cold!

So my advice is that if you’re concerned about gear, make sure you get there early to get first pick, and take more than you think you’ll need!

Our pre-departure briefing before leaving to hike up Acatenango volcano

Booking a porter

Unlike multi-day hikes like climbing Kilimanjaro or Everest Bast Camp, you don’t automatically get a porter to help carry your stuff. That’s because Acatenango is a relatively short trip, and the camps are permanent so no one needs to carry tents or cooking equipment.

That said, it’s a very steep climb and your pack will be pretty heavy with clothes, food and water, so you can opt to pay a porter to help you. Porters cost between Q150-200 (about £15-20) depending on the weight of your pack, one way. Most people carry their own bag on the descent as it will be lighter once you’ve drunk all your water.

Since I was carrying heavy camera gear, I opted for a porter both ways, and I’m very glad I did!

Food and drink for hiking Acatenango

Wicho and Charlies provided us with breakfast, lunch and dinner on the first day, and breakfast on the second morning.

The first breakfast was at their shop while we collected and packed our gear, and consisted of bread rolls with jam or Nutella, bananas, and tea or coffee.

There was also a snack bar at the shop where you could help yourself to a paper bag full of nuts, mini pretzels raisins, and small chocolate chips.

Snacks for the hike up volcan de Acatenango

Lunch was vegetarian ‘meatballs’ with mashed potato – we were given a portion each in a Tupperware to carry up and ate it about halfway through the first ascent. Dinner of vegetarian chilli and rice was cooked for us at base camp and was hot and delicious, and breakfast the next morning was veggie breakfast burritos.

All the food was tasty and portion sizes were decent but if you’re a hungry person I’d suggest you also bring some additional snacks.

My lunch of veggie 'meatballs' and mash

Water on the Acatenango hike

We were also issued with water bottles which we could fill from filtered water taps in the shop. There is nowhere to get water, so you have to carry as much as you’ll need, plus an additional litre to give to the cooks who are making dinner and breakfast.

Experts recommend taking 4 litres per person. The bottles we were given were 1.5 litres each, so I took three, meaning I had 4.5 litres. At the end of the trip I had a small amount left, so I’d say 4-4.5 litres is perfect.

Ascent to base camp

Once we’d sorted out our gear and picked up our food and water, it was time to depart. Our group of 30 hikers was bussed to the start of the trailhead, about 50 minutes’ drive from Antigua.

There we had a short briefing before starting the climb at around 10.30 am.

The ascent to base camp on Acatenango is in three stages. The first stage follows a dusty path uphill through farmland. This is said to be the toughest part of the climb, steeply uphill with no shade, passing through lush green fields of maize and beans fringed with coffee trees, all the time with the peak of Acatenango clearly visible ahead of you.

The first part of the Acatenango hike takes you through farmland

In some places there are steps and handrails to help you up the steeper or more slippery bits.

Along the way you pass a couple of homesteads, including one where the enterprising owners have set up a business offering drinks and snacks to buy. They’ll also charge you Q20 (about 20p) to wash your hands or Q50 (50p) to use the toilet.

After about an hour you arrive at the park entrance. Here you’ll need to sign in and pay the Q50 (USD 6.50) park entry fee.

You'll get amazing views of the landscape as you climb Acatenango

Once inside the park the terrain changes: it’s still steeply uphill but you leave the farmland behind and enter the forest. The path is a bit less slippery and there are more branches to grab onto; and it’s shady and cooler now you are a bit higher up.

After about another hour you’ll stop at a resting place to eat lunch. Here there’s a chance to buy more snacks and drinks, though you’ll pay through the nose for the privilege!

The next stage of the Acatenango trek takes you through dense forest

The final leg of the ascent to base camp takes about another hour and is the easiest part of the climb. Although you are still going uphill it is much less steep and in some places completely flat. And you’ll have amazing views to enjoy as you walk – or at least you will if it hasn’t clouded over!

Sadly for us, as we neared the top the clouds rolled in and we lost all our views. The ghostly trees disappearing in to the fog were very atmospheric though!

The clouds roll in as we get higher up Volcan Acatenango

Finally, after about 4 hours, you’ll arrive at your base camp. Here you’ll get a chance to relax and enjoy the views before deciding if you want to take on the additional challenge of the hike up to Fuego.

I say enjoy the views – but there is always the chance that you might get up there and find you can’t see anything at all. There’s a large erupting volcano in the back of this shot – but when we arrived at base camp we couldn’t see a thing.

Fuego volcano is behind me, but we couldn't see it!

What is the Acatenango base camp like?

The exact design of your base camp will depend on which company you hike Acatenango with, but all the decent companies have very similar camps that feature fixed shared tents or cabins with direct views across to Volcan Fuego.

Wicho and Charlies have fixed huts – solid wooden structures with room for 8 people sleeping on foam mats on the floor. The mats were thick and comfortable, and sleeping bags, pillows and extra blankets were provided. They also have smaller 2-person cabins which cost a bit more.

The cabins at our base camp on Acatenango volcano

In addition, there was a dining tent where the team prepared our meals and where we could sit inside to eat.

Other Acatenango hike tour companies have tents rather than cabins and the service levels will vary, so do check with your preferred operator to see what they supply.

Our cabin slept eight and we had thick mats with sleeping bags, pillows and blankets

All the companies I’ve mentioned above have their own private base camp area located on the south side of Volcan Acatenango facing towards Volcan de Fuego. This means that you will get clear views and you won’t be jostling for position with people from other tour groups. I’ve heard some of the companies have their tents lined up so you can watch the volcano erupting without even getting out of your tent!

If you decide to go with an independent guide or a different company, make sure you check the location of the base camp. Otherwise you could find yourself on the wrong side of the mountain!

Tourists take photos of the excellent views across to Volcan Fuego from base camp

The hike up to Volcan Fuego

After relaxing in the base camp for a while, you’ll be offered the chance to do the second part of the hike, up to Volcan Fuego. This costs an extra Q200 (£20 / $25) which you will pay on your return to the office.

The Volcán de Fuego ascent involves hiking for an hour back down the other side of Acatenango, then one hour hiking up to the viewing point on the side of Fuego, another hour to sit and hopefully watch the eruptions, and then two more hours of hiking back down the side of Fuego and back up Acatenango to base camp.

Hiking back down to Fuego. Our destination is about here on this ridge, not far from the crater.

So another four hours of hiking, half of which you will do with head torches in the dark. It’s not for the faint-hearted or the dodgy-kneed!

All being well you should leave around 4.30 pm and be back at base camp for a late dinner around 9 pm.

Unfortunately, on the day I went there was a lot of cloud and we couldn’t see a thing. It’s not safe to go (and also completely pointless) if the visibility is zero, so we had to wait to see if it would clear.

The sky begins to clear and we can finally see Fuego volcano

Luckily, it did. An hour later than scheduled, it finally looked like we would be able to hike up Fuego and get just a few hundred metres from the incredible eruptions, so most of our group decided to give it a go.

For me, the chance to photograph an erupting volcano close up was unmissable and worth the pain, so while most people left all their gear in base camp, I grabbed my camera and tripod and off we went.

The downhill was a bit slippery (this is where hiking poles are a godsend) and we were treated to a dramatic and misty sunset as we reached the bottom.

Sunset over Volcan de Acatenango Guatemala

But frustratingly, as we began our ascent of Fuego and it started to get dark, the clouds rolled back in.

We did the final 30 minutes of the ascent up Fuego in the dark and almost zero visibility, with gusty winds that threw dust in our eyes and threatened to blow us off the side of the volcano.

Hiking up the side of Fuego volcano with head torches as it gets dark

And the final walk across the narrow ridge to the viewpoint, with nothing to see but the ghostly figure of the person in front disappearing into the mist and a sheer drop on either side, was positively terrifying.

Almost zero visibility as we cross the ridge to the viewpoint on Volcan de Fuego

But at that point you have no choice but to get your game face on and carry on. We all settled in a group on the edge of the volcano, slightly down the slope to shelter from the worst of the wind and the dust, facing towards where we were told the erupting crater of Fuego was. But we couldn’t see a damn thing.

Waiting in the dark and fog at the Volcan Fuego viewpoint, hoping for a miracle

Gamely, having carried it all that way, I set up my gear in the hope that the wind would blow the clouds away and we’d get lucky with an eruption, but mostly all I got was sandblasted with dust, so I covered my camera and eventually gave up and put it away.

Photographer waiting with camera in the dark on the side of Fuego volcano

Very occasionally the cloud parted briefly so we could see the crater just for a few seconds, but Fuego stayed quiet.

And so, after about half an hour, cold, tired, hungry, extremely disappointed and very aware that we had another two hours of hiking to go before we could rest and get dinner, we turned round and went back down the way we had come.

The crater of Fuego as the clouds part, as seen at night from the side of volcan de Fuego

Heading back to base camp

The hike back to base camp was probably the most challenging part for me. It was an hour back on a slippery path, in the foggy cloud and dark, down into the valley between Fuego and Acatenango, and then more than another hour back up the steep side of Acatenango to camp.

On top of the cold and dark and tired legs, by this stage it was nearly 10 pm and we hadn’t had dinner.

Hiking back down the side of Volcán de Fuego in the cold and dark

And to make matters worse (for me at least), as we hiked back up, with our backs to Fuego, the skies cleared, and the volcano let off two big eruptions. Which we almost completely missed, and I certainly couldn’t photograph!

After hiking all that way to photograph the volcano and missing it, I found this the most stressful part. I couldn’t wait to get back up to base camp, get some hot food in me as fast as possible, and then start taking pictures!

Which eventually I was able to do at about 10.30 pm.

Fuego let off a huge eruption as we were hiking back, but this phone snap is the only image I got

Acatenango volcano photography

And so it was that after a wasted four hours and several missed photography opportunities, I was finally able to set up my camera and tripod back at base camp and start trying to take eruption photos.

Which was a very different but equally painful challenge for three main reasons.

Firstly, trying to get accurate focus on a dark volcano in a dark sky is next to impossible.

Secondly you have no idea when Fuego is going to erupt, and when it does, you only have a few seconds to get the photo before it stops again.

The Thrilling Volcan De Acatenango Hike In Antigua Guatemala

And thirdly because it’s freezing! I was wearing all my clothes and wrapped in a blanket, standing as close to the camp fire as possible, but I was still ridiculously cold. And I couldn’t press buttons while wearing gloves, so of course I took them off, and then it wasn’t long before my fingers went numb.

But as you can see, it was worth it in the end…

The Thrilling Volcan De Acatenango Hike In Antigua Guatemala

I stayed up until about midnight, after everyone else had gone to bed, but then it began to cloud over, so I went to bed because I wanted to get up again for sunrise at 3.45 am. In the night there were two eruptions that were so loud they woke everyone up, so I kind of regret not just staying up all night!

The FOMO is real…

If you want to find out more about how I took these images, look out for my volcano photography post, coming soon (or subscribe here to get an email when new posts are published).

The Acatenango summit

After you’ve climbed up to base camp and watched Fuego erupting (from near or far, depending on your preference), it’ll be time to cosy up with your hiking mates in your cabin or tent and get some sleep.

Our cosy cabin slept eight people

You’ll need it, because you’ll be woken at about 4 am for the final challenge, climbing to the summit of Acatenango volcano.

This will take about 60-80 minutes in the dark with head torches. Then you get about an hour at the top to wait for sunrise and take photos before a quick descent of about 30-45 minutes back to base camp for breakfast.

From base camp you can see both Volcan de Agua and Volcan de Fuego

The descent is quick because the ground is very soft ash that’s bouncy rather than slippery, meaning you can bounce your way down rather than having to be careful not to fall.

You don’t have climb up to the Acatenango summit, of course. You can stay in bed, have a bit of a lie in, and just get up for breakfast at about 7.30.

The first rays of dawn appear behind Volcan de Agua in Guatemala

Or you can do what I did, which is get up at the same time as everyone else, but stay behind to photograph more eruptions in the dawn light and watch the sunrise from base camp.

I decided to – which was also a stunning way to spend the morning.

The Thrilling Volcan De Acatenango Hike In Antigua Guatemala

Either way, if you’re lucky you should still get wonderful views as the sun rises behind Volcan de Agua and casts a golden glow onto Fuego.

About half my group did the Acatenango summit and said that while it was tough to hike up in the dark, it was worth it.

The Thrilling Volcan De Acatenango Hike In Antigua Guatemala

It’s something I regret not doing, so I think if you have the legs for it, you should go! After all, when will you next get the opportunity to watch sunrise from the top of a volcano?

(Answer, soon actually, if you go to Xela and climb Volcán Santa María , like I did!)

The sunrise lights up Volcan de Fuego in gorgeous morning colours

The descent of Volcán de Acatenango

After taking photos at the summit you’ll return to base camp at around 6.30 – 7 am for a quick breakfast and to pack up, before staring your descent at about 7.30 am.

It took me about 3 hours to get back down. The route is the same one as you hiked up the previous day, except it’s easier now because you’ll have drunk most of your water and eaten all your food, so your bag will be much lighter.

Watching the sunrise by the campfire as we wait for the rest of the group to get back

However, your legs will be tired, and the path is still sleep and quite slippery, so you’ll need to be careful and take your time. Almost everyone in my group slipped over on the loose dusty path at least once or twice, and some people injured themselves.

On shaky legs this was one of the least fun parts of the hike and I was very grateful for my hiking pole to help provide some stability!

The Acatenango descent is steep and slippery. At least one hiking pole is a must!

Volcan Acatenango: is it worth it?

So after all that: the hike, the sore legs, the cold, the disappointing visibility, was it worth it? Would I recommend it?

Answer: absolutely. I might be a bit obsessed with volcanos, but to me there are few experiences more incredible on this planet than seeing the power and beauty of an erupting volcano, and even with the expense and the challenges I think it was absolutely worth it.

I’m even thinking of having another go before I leave Guatemala!

But if you’re not sure of your fitness or stamina and you don’t think you can manage it all, I’d recommend skipping the Fuego ascent and saving your legs for the Acatenango sunrise summit instead.

The Acatenango hike itinerary

All the Acatenango hike tour companies offer pretty much the same itinerary (timings may vary slightly depending on the tour company and time of year):

  • 07.00 Pickup from your hostel or meet your group. Check in, organise gear and food, and book your porter if required.
  • 09.00 Bus to the start of the hike (about a 50-minute journey). Meet your porter if you’ve requested one.
  • 10.30 Begin the hike up to base camp. With a reasonable level of fitness, you can do this in four hours including breaks.
  • 14.30 Arrive at base camp at 3600 m. Time to rest and recover.
  • 16.30 If the weather is good, depart for Fuego. It takes about an hour to go down the other side of Acatenango and another hour up the Fuego viewpoint. You’ll get an hour here to watch the sunset and eruptions before returning to base camp the way you came (total time, 4 – 4.5 hours; the return journey is in the dark so make sure you bring a head torch).
  • 20.30 Dinner and time to watch the volcano before going to bed in your tent or cabin.

How to get to Acatenango Volcano in Guatemala

Most people travel to Antigua and then do an overnight hike. Antigua is easily reachable in about an hour by taxi or shuttle bus from the main international airport at Guatemala City. Tourist shuttles also travel regularly from all the popular destinations in Guatemala, including Semuc Champey , Flores , Queztaltenango , Rio Dulce and Lake Atitlán.

Is Volcan Acatenango active?

While still considered an active volcano, Acatenango has not erupted since 1972. It might erupt again at any time though!

Volcan de Acatenango is a short drive from the city of Antigua Guatemala

How much does it cost to do the Acatenango volcano overnight hike?

The price of the hike will depend on which tour operator you choose and the level of service. Cost of the tour: If you do the overnight hike, this costs in the region of Q500-700 (£50-£70 or US$65-90) Hike to Fuego: If you want to add on the hike up to Fuego, this costs Q200 (about £20/$25). Park entry fee: Q50 (£5/$6.50). Gear: Most companies include gear, but you may need to pay extra to rent things like jackets, backpack, head torch or hiking poles. As an example, I paid Q50 (£5) to rent a backpack and Q20 (£2) for a hiking pole, though prices will vary between operators. Porter: An optional extra, costs Q150-200 (about £15-20) one way. Food: The food was included but you may want to bring extra snacks.

I did the Fuego hike, rented a few extra bits of gear, and hired a porter to carry my camera gear both ways, so in total I paid about £135 ($170).

How long does it take to climb Acatenango Guatemala?

This will obviously depend on your level of fitness and how well you adjust to altitude. I’m not the fastest but I’m reasonably fit and experienced and it took me four hours to do the first stage up to base camp. Some people were quicker, and others took a little longer.

The Fuego ascent takes about four hours in total: an hour to go back down, an hour up to Fuego, and the same in reverse. The ascent to the summit of Acatenagno takes about 1-1.5 hours and about 30-60 minutes to get back down. And the final descent takes about 2.5-3.5 hours depending on how knackered your legs are at that point!

How hard is the Acatenango overnight hike?

This too will depend on your levels of fitness and experience but the short answer is: it’s pretty challenging. When I hiked Volcan Santa Maria I was told that was one of the most difficult volcanoes in Guatemala, but I found Acatenango harder. The ascent is steep, and you will likely be carrying a heavy pack which will add to the challenge. Plus you have to contend with the weather and the altitude. If you hike up to base camp, stay there, and then go back down without doing Fuego or the Acatenango summit, I would grade it as moderately difficult due to the steepness and the heavy pack.

If you choose to add on Fuego and the Acatenango summit, then it becomes much harder. For me the additional four hours of hiking down and up to Fuego in the dark and the cold were a real killer for my legs. I didn’t do the summit and my legs were still like jelly on the final descent. But that said, it’s very doable. There were several people in my group who were less experienced or fit than me, some found it very challenging, but they all made it, and they all said it was worth doing even though it was a struggle at times. The main thing is just to go at your own pace, take your time, and you’ll get there!

The first leg of the Acatenango hike is said to be the hardest as it's quite steep and slippery

Is the Volcan Acatenango hike dangerous?

No volcano hike – or any hike for that matter – is without risk. The path is steep and can be slippery, so there is a risk of falling and injuring yourself. On my hike I saw three people who had fallen and injured a knee or an ankle. This is why good shoes and hiking poles are strongly recommended. Take your time and don’t rush. It can be extremely cold at the top – with sub-zero temperatures and wind chill. So it’s very important to have the correct gear and be prepared for all types of weather. And of course there is always the chance of an earthquake or a mega eruption. These are extremely rare though!

Acatenango deaths

In 2017 six hikers tragically died of hypothermia on Volcán Acatenango after the weather changed suddenly and they got lost and disorientated. They were also reportedly inexperienced and ill-prepared for the conditions. That’s why it’s highly recommended that you travel with a reputable guide or tour group.

Will I get altitude sickness when climbing Acatenango?

The summit of Acatenango is at nearly 4,000 m above sea level, so there is a chance that you may be affected by altitude sickness. Most people will suffer some problems, such as headaches, nausea, or shortness of breath, but you shouldn’t suffer any of these too seriously. It’s advisable to spend at least a couple of days in Antigua to acclimatise before doing your Acatenango overnight hike, and drink plenty of water and bring painkillers if you think you might struggle with the elevation.

Acatenango weather

The weather at the top of Acatenango and Fuego is extremely changeable and unpredictable. Even when it is sunny in Antigua it can be rainy on the volcano, or vice versa. At the summit it can be extremely cold, with temperatures down to -10 degrees C (14 degrees F), and wind chill. The weather can change in moments too – suddenly turning from overcast to clear or sunny to rainy in the space of a few minutes. That’s why it’s hard to predict what the weather will do or pick the best day to go. I checked the weather forecast obsessively and booked a day when the forecast said it would be clear overnight – and we still had zero visibility for several hours. You can check the forecast yourself but be warned that even this is only a guide and actual results may vary.

How close can you get to Volcan Fuego?

If you opt to pay the extra Q200 to hike up to Fuego, you’ll hike to a ridge only about 500 metres from the erupting crater. If you choose to stay in the base camp and not do the extra hike, you’ll be about 1.8 miles (3 km) from Fuego, but still with an incredible direct view across the valley.

How often does Volcan Fuego erupt?

The last major eruption of Fuego volcano was in 2018, when a violent eruption tragically killed hundreds of people in some of the local villages close to the volcano. Since then, Fuego has been almost constantly erupting, with small explosions of lava, gas and ash approximately every 15-30 minutes. Sometimes it can fall quiet for an hour or more, and then get going again. When I was there, there was not much activity for several hours during the afternoon and while we were hiking up to the ridge, but on the way back and late into the night there were 4-5 big eruptions and many smaller ones.

How long does each eruption last?

Each eruption of Fuego usually starts with an explosion lasting 5-10 seconds, possibly followed by a few smaller rumbles and a big plume of ash or smoke that will gradually drift away. The really big eruptions may last 20 seconds, but these are much rarer.

Can you hike Volcan Acatenango in a day?

While it is possible to hike Acatenango in a day, the best views of Volcan Fuego happen at night, when the darkness means you can clearly see the red-hot glowing lava. This is why most tour operators offer the overnight hike, allowing you plenty of time to sit up late and enjoy the spectacular views. However, if you are in a rush, some tour companies do offer day trips up Acatenango, or you will need to hire a private guide. It takes about 5.5 hours to reach the summit and another four hours to get back down, so it’s a long day.

Can you hike Acatenango without a guide?

Yes, it is possible to climb Acatenango without a guide. You’ll need to sort out your own food, tent, transport and permits, carry all your own gear, and camp in one of the public camping areas. Some of these are on the opposite side of the mountain to Fuego, so if you’re going to do the budget option, it’s really important to make sure you check which way the campsite is facing, or you’ll miss all the action! However, in my opinion it’s not recommended to hike Acatenango without a guide. It’s much safer – and more fun! – to do it with a group. A tour company will provide you with local guides and local knowledge, so you won’t get lost or robbed on the volcano. They’ll also supply tents for sleeping, warm gear against the cold, and food. If you don’t take a tour, you’ll need to sort this all out yourself, so doing the Acatenango hike without a guide is really only for the most intrepid and experienced of hikers.

Should you get a porter to do the Acatenango and Fuego double hike?

One of the things you’ll be offered when you hike Acatenango is the chance to hire a porter to help carry your gear. Unless you’re particularly strong or fit, I think this is something you should consider and there is no shame in doing so! It’s not a competition and there’s no need to make the trip harder for yourself if you don’t need to. Plus you’ll be contributing to the local economy and giving a guy a day’s work, which for me is one of the most important benefits of travel. You’ll need to carry a backpack containing at least four litres of water, plus your lunch and breakfast, snacks, warm clothes, a coat, gloves and hat for the top, your camera, and any other personal items you might want to bring. This soon adds up and means your pack will be heavy. Along with the steepness, this can make climbing Acatenango a real challenge! It only costs Q150-200 (about £15-20) to pay a porter to carry your pack up for you, leaving you free to enjoy the hike. On the way down you’ll have drunk all your water, so most people carry their bag down themselves. Though since I had camera gear, I paid a porter to help me both ways and I’m very glad I did!

Is it worth paying extra to climb Fuego?

This is a hard one to answer. As you can see from my experience, there are no guarantees. You may hike all that way and then the weather can change and you don’t see anything. But on my travels I met several people who hiked up to Fuego and saw huge eruptions, super close up, and said it was the most incredible thing they had ever seen. If you’re not confident about your stamina and fitness, and you’re not that fussed about getting really close to Fuego, I would say it’s not necessary to do the extra hike. You can spend hours watching Fuego erupt from base camp, and the views are amazing from there without needing put yourself through any additional pain. But if, like me, you suffer badly from FOMO, you think you’re fit enough, and the weather looks clear, then go for it!

When is the best time to hike Acatenango volcano Guatemala?

Guatemala has two seasons, wet and dry. The rainy season is between May and October, and the dry season is November to April. To maximise your chances of clear skies and the best views, try to do the Acatenango hike during this period.

I did it in mid-May and although it didn’t rain, it was very overcast for much of the time. However, other people I met who did it in late May had clear skies and incredible views, so you might get good weather at any time of year.

The weather on Acatenango can change from sunny to foggy in moments

What to pack for the Acatenango and Fuego hike

The main things you need to bring for Acatenango are sports clothes for hiking in, a second change of clothes, waterproof, warm jacket, hat and gloves for the top, and sturdy trainers or hiking boots.

Here’s everything I wore and packed to climb Acatenango:

  • Hiking clothes: I wore gym leggings, sports t-shirt, sports bra, and a baseball cap to keep the sun off. You’ll get warm hiking up, so you don’t need to wear much.
  • Decent trainers (or hiking shoes) and hiking socks.
  • A change of clothes to sleep in or in case you get rained on (I had a second pair of loose jersey trousers that I put on over my leggings to keep warm, and another t-shirt), and I brought thick socks to keep my feet warm at night).
  • A change of underwear . This may be TMI for the men reading this, but for the ladies, I highly recommend wearing period knickers for hikes like this. They’re great for absorbing sweat and for when you have to pee on the side of the mountain with no toilet paper!
  • Thermal base layer – I put this on under my t-shirt when we arrived at the top.
  • Warm mid-layer . I had my Patagonia nano puff jacket, and I also borrowed a light fleece from the company.
  • Waterproof jacket – this also helps with the wind chill.
  • Warm coat . I borrowed a thick puffy jacket from the company. It wasn’t especially technical, but it was very necessary!
  • Warm hat, gloves, scarf, buff (to keep the dust out of your face). All of these were included in the package from the company I hiked with.

Accessories

  • Water – at least four litres
  • 50-60L backpack
  • Hiking poles
  • Toiletries – keep it minimal, you won’t need much. I just took a toothbrush and toothpaste, moisturiser, hand cream and lip balm (it gets very dry and dusty)
  • Sun cream – even if it’s cloudy, you can still get burned at high elevations.
  • Wet wipes, deodorant
  • Toilet paper
  • Small bag to collect and take away your rubbish

Note that when you’re packing in the shop you can leave stuff you don’t need there; most places have lockers but you may need to bring your own padlock.

Things to do in Antigua after climbing Volcan Acatenango

Antigua is one of the highlights of any trip to Guatemala, and there are loads of things to see and do around this gorgeous colonial city. I’ll be writing a post all about the top things to do in Antigua soon, so watch this space, or subscribe for updates if you want to read that!

Where to stay in Antigua before and after climbing Volcan Acatenango

There are loads of places to stay in Antigua to suit all tastes and budgets, but here are three personally-tested recommendations.

Budget – Yellow House Hostel

This is where I stayed before and after the hike. Yellow House is a friendly hostel in a convenient location, with a lovely shady rooftop terrace where it’s nice to relax and chat to other guests. Private rooms are small and have shared bathrooms but they are clean and very affordable. Breakfast is included.

Midrange – Ojalá Hotel

This is where my friend stayed, so I visited but did not stay here. There are dorms if you are on a budget, but also private rooms that are a bit more expensive than at Yellow House. Ojalá also has a café and a private courtyard to chill out in.

Luxury – Villa Bokeh

What better way to recover from your challenging volcano hike than with a couple of nights of sheer luxury at one of Guatemala’s top boutique hotels, located in six acres of beautiful gardens just outside Antigua?

Hikers gather on top of Volcán de Fuego to watch an eruption as the sun sets.

How to get front-row seats to an active volcano in Guatemala

This challenging hike offers a rare opportunity to witness one of the world’s most active geologic wonders.

Frequent and dramatic eruptions make Guatemala’s 12,346-foot-tall Volcán de Fuego one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Adventurers seeking an up-close encounter with this pyroclastic marvel head to the summit of neighboring Acatenango Volcano—at 13,045 feet, the third highest in Guatemala—which provides an unparalleled vantage point. The strenuous hike goes from lush coffee plantations at the mountain’s base to the cloud forests on the mountainside, up to the otherworldly terrain near the peak. Here’s what to know about this awe-inspiring trek.

Acclimatize in Antigua

Before embarking on the journey to witness Fuego’s eruptions, acclimatize to the altitude in Antigua Guatemala . Just over an hour west from the country’s capital and sitting in the shadow of volcanoes Agua, Acatenango, and Fuego, the charming colonial town of Antigua has cobblestone streets, vibrant markets, and picturesque plazas.

Hiker Charlie Ballinger reads in his tent with a view of an eruption of Volcán de Fuego as seen from inside camp on Acatenango.

While exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site, visitors can find local flavors at Café Condesa ; experience traditional barbecue and live music at Restaurante Las Antorchas ; and absorb the tranquility of the baroque La Merced Church, built in 1767. Accommodations range from the convenient Posada del Angel to the luxurious Casa Santo Domingo, located in a former late-17th-century convent.

Choose a one- or two-day hike

Hikes usually start at the village of La Soledad, where the path to Acatenango begins. From here, climbers can expect a challenging but rewarding ascent, passing through different ecosystems, from farmlands to coniferous forests. The hike to the top can take from 5 to 6 hours, depending on pace and weather conditions. There’s an option to go on horseback for the initial segment of the journey, as the final stretch to the top must be done by foot.

Zilia Landes hikes towards Volcán de Fuego from camp.

At Acatenango’s crater, amid the clouds and above the canopy, the explosive power of Fuego is on full display. Many adventurers opt for a two-day expedition to be able to overnight at the summit, experiencing the spectacular sights and sounds of glowing lava and pyroclastic material set against the starlit night skies.

Be prepared for a dramatic range in temperatures due to the high elevation, with daytime temperatures over 68°F and below freezing at night. Whereas the two-day hike allows for a paced journey, the Acatenango day trip packs the ascent and descent into a single, more strenuous day. Offered by Casa Santo Domingo and outfitters like Antigua Tours and OX Expeditions , this trip starts early at 5 a.m. to ensure hikers return by dusk, usually taking between 10 to 12 hours, including a shuttle to and from Antigua.

(What you’ll discover on a journey through Guatemala’s Western Highlands.)

What to know

Trekking to Acatenango is not for the faint-hearted. This adventure requires physical fitness, preparation, and a spirit of adventure. Pack warm clothing, sturdy hiking boots, water, and snacks. The dry season, from November to April, typically offers clearer views of the volcano.

A plume of smoke ascends from a large eruption of Volcán de Fuego

For safety, it is important to stay informed about the volcano’s activity through official sources, hiring a local guide for the trek, and following the guide’s instructions. Outfitters like OX Expeditions lead overnight hikes that include a bilingual guide, meals, tents, and shuttle to and from Antigua.

Trekkers are encouraged to leave-no-trace and preserve the beauty of this natural wonder.
