Valencia Food Tour – Review, Tips, What To Expect And More

Tapas spread

From what kind of delicious foods you’ll be sampling, to tips for your trip, find out all you need to know about booking a Valencia food tour.

I’ve just returned from an incredible week in Valencia. It was a special trip for personal reasons – a place I’d been dying to visit and booked to travel to on my own. You can read a bit more about the decision I made here . It was time to create the trip I wanted, and structure my days how I pleased.

When I was looking for things to do in Valencia , I knew food would feature heavily! I always try to go on a food tour when I’m abroad, as I think it’s the best way to get to know a place. The cuisine tells you so much about a destination, and gives you a great introduction to the culture and the local people.

I found a few Valencia food tours around (some involving making your own paella), but knew that I wanted to do a tapas tour with a local. I was travelling solo, so having a dinnertime activity was appealing – better than yet another candlelit dinner for one!

Planning your trip to Valencia? Here are a few quick highlights:

List Image

Valencia food tour – The Group

I booked my Valencia tapas tour  through Get Your Guide (a company I’ve used before and trust!) and met guide Gabriel just before 7pm outside Valencia Cathedral. Joining us were a mum and two grown up daughters from The Netherlands and a family of four from England. Eight was a great number – intimate enough to get to know my fellow tour mates, but large enough to have a nice buzz!

Valencia Cathedral

Gabriel explained that over the next two hours we’d be visiting three places, each showcasing a different style of tapas. We’d try around eight different dishes, accompanied by alcoholic or soft drinks.

He was a great host – charismatic, cheeky and full of stories. As we wandered between bars it was nice to chat to him about life in Valencia, his favourite spots and a little more about the culture. He was open and honest, and over the evening covered topics including over tourism in Spain, the Valencian language and why Spanish people eat so late! We even chatted about our experiences in San Sebastian, Madrid and Barcelona – debating where the best Spanish food comes from!

Valencia Food Tour – Stop 1

Our first stop was at La Taberna de la Reina, just across the plaza from the Cathedral. It didn’t look like anything special from the outside, but inside I discovered a bar filled with tasty little morsels on sticks. It was pintxos time!

Pinxtos on bar

I’ve had quite a few pintxos before (mainly in Barcelona), but it was nice to hear more about them. Gabriel recounted their Basque Country origins, a Spanish region which borders France. With access to crusty baguettes, people began to use them as a base, and top with various ingredients. Each pintxo comes with a stick running through it, sometimes of different lengths. Each stick relates to a price, so at the end your waiter can simply count the sticks and let you know what to pay.

Pintxos on our tapas tour of Valencia

At this bar we had the opportunity to choose our own pintxos from the plates on the bar. So much choice – from padron peppers and tortillas, to sausages and prawns. I picked one with ham, goats cheese and a sweet marmalade, and another with a chorizo-like spread called Sobrasada, caramelised onions and ham. They were full of strong flavours, and devoured in just a few bites.

I chose these two tasty pintxos on our food tour of Valencia

This style of cuisine is relatively modern, and Gabriel encouraged us to visit more pintxos bars across the city, as every place has their own unique concoctions! Pintxos in Valencia cost between 1 EUR and 3 EUR, so they’re great as a snack with a drink, or a light lunch.

Pintxos on our tapas tour of Valencia

Valencia Food Tour  – Stop 2

After wandering through the busy streets of the old town, we found ourselves in the El Carmen neighbourhood. We ventured inside the teeny tiny Tasca el Botijo . With pintxos done, it was now time for montaditos. Gabriel explained these are similar to pintxos, as they’re also usually on bread, but usually with a drink.

We started with little slices of baguette topped with sobrasada – that delicious chorizo-like spreadable sausage I’d had earlier. Mmm!

Sobrasada on bread

Then the table was filled with tasty plates of local specialities. I really enjoyed the esgarraet Valenciano – salty cod with garlic and grilled red peppers in oil. Alongside it was a plate of flavoursome sausage with sweet, caramelised onions. There was also a plate of sautéed mushrooms with garlic, parsley and chilli. It was all wonderfully moreish.

Esgarraet Valenciano (cod and peppers)

We heard how usually locals would hold their drink in one hand and a fork in the other, eating straight from the sharing plates in the middle of the table.

Once our glasses and plates were empty, it was time for a little surprise. Gabriel grabbed a glass flask from the bar containing a local liquor known as mistela (made from moscatel grapes). There was a technique involved in drinking from a unique bottle like this, which would be a big challenge for first-timers. Could we do it?

We all gave it a go, much to the amusement of everyone around the table. One guy spilled it everywhere, another almost bit a chunk out of the glass! I fared ok, but didn’t get the flair form the distance or height that Gabriel displayed!

Gabriel showing us how to drink mistella in the traditional way

Valencia Food Tour – Stop 3

Feeling merry after a few glasses of wine and a big gulp of mistela, it was onto the final stop of our Valencia tapas tour. One of my favourite parts of the tour were the relaxed ramblings from place to place, seeing different neighbourhoods and landmarks along the way. We quizzed our guide on a few details, but it was nice just to amble with our new tour mates, and swap stories and recommendations from our time in the city so far.

The family of four had met Gabriel the day before for a different Valencia food tour, taking a trip around the city’s Central Market (Mercado Central) and learning about a different side to the cuisine. Meanwhile, the others had enjoyed mooching around the old city and hopping on bikes to explore a bit further afield.

Exploring the city on a Valencia food tour

Our third and final stop was at a restaurant called Las Cuevas . We ventured to the backroom, and heard how this was a place that specialised in proper tapas. Gabriel ordered a load of dishes for the table and we enjoyed a tasty variety of flavours over the next hour.

We tried a few staples of the tapas scene – padron peppers and patatas bravas. I really enjoyed the deep-fried brie which oozed in the middle and was topped with a sweet strawberry jam.

Padron peppers

Then excitement levels were raised as a sizzling dish of chorizo in boiling hot oil was delivered from the kitchen. The waiter tipped some rum on top and set fire to the dish! What a sight – eyebrows slightly singed, we tucked in and enjoyed the final part of a tasty evening in Valencia.

As the tour came to a close, Gabriel treated us all to one more shot of mistela to toast our evening, snapped some photos of the group, then suggested a few other spots to check out.

Flambeed chorizo with rum

Valencia Food Tour – An Impromptu Stop 4

I was leaving the city the next morning and was keen to try out the city’s famous cocktail – Agua de Valencia. Our guide knew just the place, and after such an enjoyable evening together, the entire tour group (minus Gabriel) piled into Café de las Horas and continued the fun for another hour.

A few people on Instagram had recommended this bar to me, and as I entered I could see why. It’s a stunning bar, with plush velvet interiors, painted starry ceiling, and an old-fashioned vibe. We ordered a jug of Agua de Valencia and continued getting to know each other. It was a lovely, and unexpected way to end my time in Valencia.

Cafe De Las Horas, Valencia

I really enjoyed my food tour of Valencia and would recommend it as a good way to understand more about the city’s cuisine and influences, and learn from a local. Also, if you’re a solo traveller in Valencia, it’s a great chance to meet a few new people.

As mentioned, I booked this tapas tour of Valencia via Get Your Guide, a tour booking website that I’ve always had excellent experiences with. If you’re thinking of booking, you can check availability and latest prices here .

Britt (Norway)

What an amazing online experience! My girlfriend and I are big foodies and with us being unable to go to restaurants at the moment, this was a fantastic alternative. Really felt comfortable on a video call with the hosts, Lara and Eduardo. They did a great job at guiding us through everything. Definitely recommend!

Joseph (United Kingdom)

I cannot recommend this tour highly enough! Sofia was a spectacular tour guide and her love for Valencia is contagious. The stories and details of the tour were shared with such passion. The tapas and wine in the 11th century venue was amazing! Thank you SO much for sharing your city in such a special way. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

Valencia Food Tour – Tapas, Treats and Tiger Nuts

Posted on Last updated: 11/02/2024

Categories SPAIN

If you are visiting Valencia and you are a foodie, doing a food tour is a must! Follow my experience of a Valencia food tour for some inspiration and tips for where to try the best local treats, and to learn about peculiar local eating habits.

Woman shopping for fruit and vegetables at an indoor market stall in Valencia

I love food! And really… who doesn’t? And, of course, I love discovering local food through food tours whenever I can, like this food tour in Granada .

Of course, Valencia, the capital of paella , wasn’t going to be an exception, even though I’ve been here many times before. In fact, all the more reason to do one!

Table of Contents

  • 1 A very traditional Valencian start
  • 2 When in Valencia, eat five times a day
  • 3 A visit to the Mercado Central
  • 4 Jamón Serrano vs. Jamón Ibérico
  • 5 Russafa Neighbourhood
  • 6 Some of my favourite books about Spanish food

A very traditional Valencian start

Meeting at Mercado Colón, I was joined by a Colombian family of four, and after some brief introductions we headed for the ultimate Valencian mid-morning snack, an horchata de chufa .

The horchata is a refreshing creamy white drink made from chufas (tiger nuts). It is a little bit similar to almond milk but slightly sweeter. It is usually accompanied by a fartón , a light sweet pastry stick that is dipped into the horchata . Delicious!

Chufas tubers on one hand in a cafe in Valencia

After we all savoured our first treat, we had a walk around the Mercado Colón, one of the most emblematic Modernist buildings in Valencia, while Lenny explained that it used to be the 2 nd public food market in the city.

It is located in a now very affluent area of the city, and over time, the need for a fresh food market in the neighbourhood changed and the building fell into disrepair.

After a long renovation project, in 2003 it was given a new lease of life as a gastro market with lots of upmarket international bars and restaurants.

When in Valencia, eat five times a day

As we walked to our next stop, Lenny, our host, explained that Valencians can have five meals a day… Five!

  • First is desayuno (breakfast), which tends to be toast with tomato and olive oil, or a sweet pastry like a fartón or similar.
  • Then comes the almuerzo , what we know in the UK as ‘elevenses’, around 10.30-11am which consists of a bocadillo (similar to a baguette sandwich) of tortilla (Spanish omelette), calamares (calamari), jamón (cured ham) or something along those lines. This is sometimes accompanied by a beer.
  • Comida (lunch) is the main meal of the day around 2pm, and it’s normally paella or another rice dish.
  • Meal number 4 is the merienda (afternoon tea), usually a horchata de chufa with a fartón or a pastry with a smoothie.
  • And the final meal of the day is cena (dinner), which tends to consist of tapas .

Sadly, this tour is no longer being offered, but here are similar food tours you can take in Valencia:

  • Valencia Old Town Wine and Tapas in an 11th C Monument
  • Valencia Wine Tasting and Tapas Tour

A visit to the Mercado Central

Our next stop was the famous Mercado Central (Central Market), said to be one of the most beautiful market halls in Europe and one of the great reasons to visit Valencia .

It is housed within a modernist building from the 1920s and is a must-see attraction for anyone, foodie or non-foodie, visiting Valencia.

Modernist steel building with market stalls and people in Valencia

Despite being really popular with visitors to the city, it is still a neighbourhood market, where you can observe every day local life, and sample the best produce that the Valencian region can offer. It is certainly one of my favourite spots in the city!

RELATED POST 19 Exciting Things to Do in Valencia

At the market, Lenny took us to a traditional stall that specialises in the best quality Spanish azafrán (saffron), where we learnt how to differentiate between 1 st and 2 nd quality saffron.

Did you know that you need around 150 flowers to get 1g of saffron? Harvest and selection is a very manual process, which is why it is the most expensive spice in the world!

Shop with paprika boxes, dry tomatoes in a basket and price tags in Valencia

We then walked to the next stall, which specialised in cured meats.

Here we learnt about the differences between jamón serrano and jamón ibérico , while we enjoyed some samples, which also included fuet (a thin, dry cured sausage) and two types of manchego cheese (one young and one mature).

All this was washed down with a nice glass of red wine.

Woman wearing a red t-shirt and holding platter cheese, ham and cured sausage

Jamón Serrano vs. Jamón Ibérico

So for those of you who are wondering what the differences between these two types of jamón are…

  • Jamón serrano comes from ordinary white pigs. The leg is covered with salt and cured for a period of between 6 months and 1 year.
  • Jamón ibérico has a similar curing process but it is done over 3 years. It comes from pata negra (black Iberian) pigs, which roam free on oak groves where they feed naturally on grass and acorns.

Jamón ibérico is fattier and more flavoursome than serrano, and the fat just melts in your mouth. Being a meat eater, this was without a doubt my favourite stop of the day.

Woman carving serrano ham with legs of ham in the background

On our way to the next stop, Lenny encouraged us to pop inside the Central Post Office and wow! What a treat for the eyes that was with its incredibly beautiful domed glass ceiling!

valencia food tour

We continued on to a sweet (literally) little chocolate shop, that has been making chocolates in Valencia since the 1930s and it’s famous for its chocolate truffles and its cubanitos . And now I understand why it’s so famous!

The chocolate is just divine! It has nothing to envy Belgian or Swiss chocolate, or even the Mexican cacao that I tried on one the amazing Oaxaca tours I did!

RELATED POST Paella Cooking Class in Valencia

Russafa Neighbourhood

From here, we went to Russafa Market, in the neighbourhood of the same name. Russafa has become the hipster area of Valencia, but the market has remained a great place to observe local every day life.

Here, Lenny took us to a little shop that specialises in olive oil, where we learnt about the different grades of oil, extra virgin and virgin olive oil through a tasting session.

We were also given some samples of black (ripe) olive and green (unripe) olive tapenade and piquillo peppers jam, which were really tasty!

Bottles of olive oil with price tags

Our last stop was a historic restaurant located within a Valencian traditional house built at the beginning of the 19 th century, still with a lot of gorgeous original features.

As it was a lovely day, we sat outside and we were treated to two tapas here: ensaladilla rusa , literally translated as Russian salad, it is a Spanish-style potato salad, and a cod croquette. The perfect ending to the tour!

I loved this tour not only because Lenny is an excellent host, but because of all the information I learnt from her – all the different grades of the products we tried and the process they go through before they end as the final product.

And let’s not forget about the treats themselves! Absolutely delicious!

So tell me: Which of these foods would you like to try the most? Let me know in the comments!

Oh gosh, it all looks so good! I've never actually been on an organized food tour and I feel like I've been really missing out! Were there any places you visited that you would have visited again?

Hey Brianna. Food tours are such a great way to explore the city and getting to know its culture through food! I'd highly recommend that you try it. And yes, I went back to the horchata place a couple of times and I'm going back to Valencia soon and want to go back to the traditional restaurant. And I always visit the markets when I go too! :)

A very interesting read, the tiger nut drink and farton sound nice for breakfast but then all of it sounds scrummy!

The horchata and the farton are sooo good at any time of the day ?

What wonderful photos, they're certainly making my mouth water! I could definitely get used to having 5 meals a day. Like you, I have recently discovered food tours as well - I'm planning to do one in Belfast when I go in November - they're such a good way to gain an alternative understanding of the culture.

Thank you Louise. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Food tours are such a great way to getting to know a city, aren't they? The one in Belfast should be amazing! :)

I'm passionate about connecting people through local gastronomy

Hola! My name is Koen Mateboer and I emigrated to beautiful Valencia about 12 years ago for love. Over the years I have only grown to love this city more and developed a strong passion for Valencian life! My mission is to connect people with local life and gastronomy in its most authentic form while enjoying and exploring the beautiful city and its surroundings. I do this by connecting with people through personal attention, a healthy dose of humor and lots of enthusiasm. Let’s create a memorable experience together!

What gives me energy?

Tasty & healthy food and drinks in good company! Gastronomy fascinates me and I like to brew and cook myself, including of course the Valencian paella! I also like to combine dishes with local craft beers and wines.

Discover new places, get to know new people, enjoy nature, gastronomy, culture and history! Distant cultures and other ways of living always inspire me.

Sport has always been an important part of my life. I am very energetic and have practiced many sports. I’ve been doing Taekwon-Do since I was a kid. I also enjoy running and cycling/walking in nature!

I am a huge music lover and can totally lose myself in it! I play a little guitar, have been taking drum lessons and DJ regularly as a hobby. I also have quite a vinyl record collection, just love it!

Experience 'La vida Valenciana'!

Valencia, the radiant third city of Spain with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, is a lovely, friendly town on the Mediterranean coast. In combination with the rich culture, history, architecture, gastronomy and beautiful nature, it is the ideal city to enjoy the outdoors! Its location next to the Turia river and relatively short distances also make it the ideal cycling and walking city. There is so much to discover, especially if you also include the beautiful surroundings with the beaches, vineyards, mountains and Lake Albufera!

I believe that enjoying the local gastronomy is a great way to get to know a city, the local culture, nature and the people. While dining, people enjoy being together, all important celebrations include large meals and people usually meet on the terraces. Mostly outside and around the eating moments, that’s ‘La vida Valenciana’. This way of living is key to my experiences and I would like to take you along the ride!

Personal & flexible

Focus on one group of like-minded people that easily connect. I love to create personalized experiences for groups, businesses and families & friends. I avoid mixing large groups that move unwieldy and slowly and have diverse needs and interests. Personal attention comes first!

valencia food tour
