Hi, I was born in Firenze and I lived my childhood in a medieval village called Castelfranco di Sopra. I have lived in Tuscany all my life, and it has become part of my soul. It’s a place I love and respect, and it never ceases to take my breath away. Although I attended art school in Florence, since my early 20s I have worked for a number of well-known travel agencies and tour operators. While working there, I had the opportunity to plan and lead many tours for English, American and Australian visitors. I love leading tour groups and find great pleasure in introducing visitors to the hidden gems of a land that is so rich in history, culture, traditions, food, wine and the warm hospitality of the authentic Tuscan people - learn more about us.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Tuscany

Amazing time, amazing people, amazing places. I would highly recommend this tour. The tour guide was exceptional and everything was so gorgeous. It's a great way to see such a grand area in a short time without missing anything.
Basically a tour that consisted of hotels, transport by train and a couple of short walking tours. We knew that before we went and so was fine. The addition of an extra night in Rome is needed with tickets for Colleseum and Palatine Hill on one day. We did this by ourselves although it was a lot of hassle trying to get tickets for the Colleseum and got ripped off.

Why should you book a vacation package to Tuscany?

If you're planning a trip to this beautiful European destination, package vacations make perfect sense. They allow you to bundle together flights, hotels and car hire, letting you explore the countryside of Tuscany and its tucked away sights. And you can save money for another glass of Chianti, or a succulent plate of bistecca Fiorentina.

When should you book a vacation package to Tuscany?

Tuscany attracts visitors throughout the year, but it has a couple of peak seasons (roughly April to June, and September/October). During those periods, prices will be slightly higher, though the weather is at its best. July and August can be extremely hot, but still manageable. Late fall, winter or spring breaks are great for sightseeing, but double check opening times before visiting any museums or galleries.

Getting to tuscany.

Florence Airport, Peretola (FLR): Known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport, it’s the closest airport to the heart of Florence and Tuscany. It’s relatively small and offers fewer international connections, but it’s a popular choice due to its proximity to Tuscany’s major cities. Browse current flight deals and book as the best rates arise using Kayak.

Pisa International Airport (PSA): Also known as Galileo Galilei Airport, this is the largest airport in Tuscany with more international flight connections. Pisa airport is well-connected to Florence and other Tuscan cities by both train and bus services.

Arriving from Other Parts of Italy

Tuscany is well-served by Italy’s extensive train network. The high-speed trains from cities like Rome, Milan , and Venice make getting to Tuscany both quick and convenient. Florence’s main station, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, is a major hub connecting Tuscany to the rest of Italy.

Getting Around Tuscany

Public transportation.

Trains: The train network in Tuscany is quite extensive, connecting not only the major cities but also smaller towns. They are generally punctual, affordable, and efficient.

Buses: For some of the smaller towns and villages, bus is the only public transport available. Although they can be less predictable than trains, buses can get you to places trains can’t reach.

Renting a car can be an excellent option if you wish to explore the countryside or visit vineyards at your own pace. Do remember that driving in Italy requires an International Driving Permit along with your regular driver’s license for non-EU citizens. Also, many city centers in Tuscany are limited traffic zones (ZTLs) and are camera-controlled. Driving into these zones without a permit will result in a fine.

Taxis are readily available in cities and larger towns. Uber operates in Florence and is another convenient option for getting around.

Best Time to Visit: Tuscany is a year-round destination, but the ideal times to visit are between April and June, and September and October when the weather is comfortable and the countryside is at its most vibrant.

Language: Italian is the official language. However, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.

Currency: Euro (€) is the official currency of Italy.

Safety: Tuscany is generally safe for tourists, but like any other tourist destination, be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places.

Electricity: Italy operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. The power plugs and sockets are of type F and L.

Cities, Towns and Villages within Tuscany

As the capital of Tuscany, Florence is an incredible mix of art, history, and culture. It’s the birthplace of the Renaissance, and home to world-class museums such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery, where you can admire Michelangelo’s David. Famous for its medieval cityscape and the historic Palio horse race, Siena is a must-visit. The city’s heart is the Piazza del Campo, a shell-shaped square that hosts the Palio twice every summer. The Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is another highlight, featuring intricate Gothic architecture. Siena’s historical center has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its preserved medieval city planning and architectural splendor.

One fun fact is that the town’s intact city walls have been transformed into a pedestrian promenade, perfect for biking or a leisurely walk.

San Gimignano

Known as the “Town of Fine Towers”, San Gimignano is famed for its 14 medieval towers that dominate the skyline. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers fantastic art, great dining, and world-class gelato at the Gelateria Dondoli, a two-time champion of the Gelato World Cup. Its proximity to Chianti makes it an excellent stop on a Tuscan wine tour.

Montepulciano

This medieval and Renaissance hill town is known for its Vino Nobile wines. Stroll along the Corso, a grand avenue packed with Renaissance palazzi and churches, or visit the impressive Tempio di San Biagio. The town also offers panoramic views over the surrounding vineyards and Val d’Orcia.

When is the best time of year for a wine tour in Tuscany?

The best time to visit Tuscany for a wine tour largely depends on your personal preferences, but there are a few peak periods that are particularly popular. Spring (April to June) and Fall (September and October) are often considered the ideal times for a Tuscan wine tour. The weather during these seasons is typically mild and pleasant, and the landscape is at its most vibrant – with blooming flowers in spring, and changing leaves in the fall. Fall is also the time of the grape harvest (known as “vendemmia”), which can be a fascinating process to witness. Some wineries even allow visitors to participate in the harvest. Summer (July and August) in Tuscany can be quite hot, and many Italians go on vacation in August, which means some wineries might be closed. However, the region is still beautiful during this time and the wine tours are certainly still operational. Winter (November to March) is the low tourist season in Tuscany. While the weather can be cooler and wetter, there are fewer tourists, making it a good time to visit if you prefer to avoid crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, it’s always a good idea to check with individual wineries or tour companies in advance for their operating hours and to book your tour.

What is the main wine region in Tuscany?

The most renowned wine region in Tuscany is the Chianti region, famous for producing Chianti and Chianti Classico wines. It’s characterized by its idyllic rolling hills, historic vineyards, and scenic villages. The Chianti region is situated between Florence and Siena, making it conveniently accessible for tourists and wine lovers. However, Tuscany boasts several other notable wine-producing areas. For example, Montalcino, located south of the Chianti region, is renowned for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. Nearby, Montepulciano produces the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Further west towards the coast, you’ll find the Bolgheri region, known for its superb “Super Tuscan” wines, a term referring to high-quality wines that don’t adhere to traditional Italian wine regulations but have nonetheless achieved worldwide recognition. Each of these areas offers unique variations in climate, soil, and winemaking traditions, contributing to the diversity and richness of Tuscan wines.

The Best Day Trips in Tuscany for a Wine-filled Adventure With Stunning Scenery

No matter which route you choose, you can expect delicious food, wine, and superb views.

vacation tours of tuscany

Whether coastal or country, Tuscany is made for four wheels. The roads caress every dip and curve of the hilly, pastoral landscape and are banked like a racetrack at every turn. The smaller strade provinciali (country roads) rarely see traffic, and each one offers an enticing scene dreamier than the last: hilltop castles, ancient farmhouses, vineyards , fields of poppies and lavender, and more. It's worth investing in a great rental, like a vintage Fiat Spider convertible, though a Fiat 124 or souped-up SUV will do. And since this is Tuscany, you'll want to make time to take in the drive with picture-perfect pit stops. Without further ado, read on for some of the best day trips in Tuscany, and plan your route.

A Tuscan Fairy Tale

Val d'Orcia is arguably the most visually impressive and romantic area of Tuscany. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004, the lush landscape of hill towns and rolling greens is the setting for a fairy tale. Starting in Pienza, travel south and then east to Monticchiello, a perfectly preserved 15th-century village. Continue on the serpentine route south for 30 minutes to Radicofani, another medieval town with a gorgeous fortress tower. Enjoy lunch at La Grotta , then head northwest to Bagni San Filippo to soak in the natural thermal baths. You'll be relaxed on your half-hour drive to Castiglione d'Orcia, where you can take in the Val d'Orcia landscape from the town tower. Then, it's on to San Quirico d'Orcia for more medieval Tuscany and great views. From here, you'll fall in love with a trail of towns: Take the old SP137 road northwest for 10 minutes to Torrenieri, then go northeast on SP14, a gorgeous ridge road that leads to Montisi. (Make sure to stop at San Giovanni d'Asso along the way). Meander the SP71 road south to Petroio and walk its corkscrew streets. On your way south to Montepulciano, stop in Montefollonico. Tip: You might want to break up the drive into a few days. Every town mentioned is perfect for an overnighter.

The Wine Route

Wine lovers who love a great drive, welcome to Brunello country. From Montalcino, it's a short 10-minute drive south to Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where you can visit the radiant travertine and alabaster church of Sant'Antimo and be enchanted by the haunting Gregorian chants at daily mass. About five minutes down the hill is Poggio di Sotto for an excellent Brunello experience. Or, check out Podere le Ripi , whose bonsai wines and farm-to-table Tuscan Garden Experience are a must. Get back in the car for a half-hour drive south to explore three equally delicious medieval hill towns: Seggiano, Castel del Piano, and Arcidosso, where you can have lunch at La Tagliola , a tiny restaurant with a menu dedicated to porcini mushrooms. Then, snake your way northeast on a lazy 30-minute drive, hopscotching from Monticello Amiata to Cinigiano to Porrona. For another taste of Brunello, break at Fonterenza , and then it's back to Montalcino just in time to catch the sunset.

Art With a Side of Vino in Chianti

What's better than a trip filled with art? A trip filled with art, great food, and delicious wine. Luckily, the Chianti countryside offers it all. From Florence, take the winding road to Antinori nel Chianti Classico in Bargino. With six centuries of wine production under its belt, Antinori is one of the most historic aziende (companies). It put Chianti Classico on the map and then redefined itself with an entirely new design — an architectural undulation that blends with the hills. Speaking of blends, the wines here are excellent (a tasting is a must), and the architecture is worthy of your Instagram feed. But you're here for Antinori Art Project , an ongoing and ever-growing collection of contemporary art installations, including pieces by Tomas Saraceno, Rosa Barba, and Jorge Peris. Hungry? Antinori has a rooftop restaurant — Rinuccio 1180 — overlooking the vineyards. If not, get back in the car and buckle up for a 50-minute ride south on some of Tuscany's prettiest strade provinciali to Castello di Ama . Installations by artists like Daniel Buren, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Anish Kapoor can be seen throughout the winery and vineyards. You're also as likely to unknowingly walk across a Pascale Marthine Tayou as you are to stumble across a Louise Bourgeois.

Going Coastal

If you prefer the beach to hill towns, head to Bassa Maremma, about 25,000 acres of coastal paradise from Castiglione della Pescaia to Capalbio. Beyond the beautiful views, there's plenty to do here, too. Parco della Maremma is a 25-kilometer nature reserve with marshlands, pinewood forests, and pastures. Walk, run, hike, bird-watch, or simply enjoy the dunes. Further south lies Talamone, a picture-perfect medieval town on a wild promontory with a castle. Just south of the town, the natural landscape forms a baia (bay) perfect for wind sports, making Talmone Italy's top destination for kite and windsurfing. Or, drive 15 minutes south to Laguna di Orbetello , the most important lagoon in the Tyrrhenian Sea — it's a major migration stopover for thousands of birds and a World Wildlife Fund site. You can explore the oasis via trail and guided tours. For something a little offbeat, another 20-minute drive south and just five minutes inland will bring you to Il Giardino dei Tarocchi , a colorful, larger-than-life art installation from artist Niki de Saint Phalle in the middle of the Capalbio countryside. Not quite your speed? Slow down and drive back north (about 45 minutes) to Alberese, where you'll meet butteri (true Tuscan cowboys) at Il Bivacco , Italy's original Wild West show.

Island Adventure

Island lovers, take note: Tuscany has some of the most beautiful, wild, and elegant islands in Italy. Driving north or south on the E80, take the Orbetello Scalo exit. Not quite an island, and more like a land strip, Orbetello is a historic town oozing with charm from the moment you pass through the imposing Porta Nuova. Ancient walls, medieval ramparts, Renaissance-era fortifications, tiny streets, and charming boutiques make Orbetello the perfect spot for a stroll. From there, hop in the car and cross an artificial causeway to Monte Argentario, heading straight to the top for the lookout at Punta Telegraph. On a clear day, you can see Giglio, Montecristo, Elba, and Corsica, if you're lucky. On a rainy day, you'll be caught up in Monte Argentario's incredible nature. Take a hike around Capo d'Uomo or grab a bite to eat at Ristoro La Sorgente , a rustic eatery serving local delights underneath flourishing pines. Then, head down the mountain for a spectacular 30-minute coastal drive southeast to Porto Ercole, a tiny fishing village that's best known as an escape for the rich and famous, thanks to Hotel Il Pellicano . Fun fact: Porto Ercole is often considered to be Caravaggio's final resting place, though art historians still have this up for debate. Get back in the car, and drive north to the seaport town of Porto Santo Stefano, where the world's most beautiful yachts and sailboats are moored. You'll want to walk around the town and enjoy the pebbly beaches. Antsy? Park your car at the port (10 to 15 euro daily) and hop the traghetto (ferry) from Porto Santo Stefano to Giglio, 21 square kilometers of dunes, cliffs, and bays You can return to Porto Santo Stefano for a sundowner.

Wild Tuscany

Southern Tuscany is wild. Divided from the north by Monte Amiata, the rugged countryside has been almost untouched for centuries. Expect original country charm, amazing food, solitude, and vast vistas. From Montalcino, head toward Sant'Angelo in Colle and pass through Sant'Angelo Scalo for a side trip to Castello Banfi and its museum. Then, make your way to the medieval fortress town of Roccalbegna, which boasts a dramatic location at the foothills of a granite monolith. Have lunch at La Pietra , a family-run locanda that has wowed guests with homemade pasta and locally sourced produce and vegetables for six generations. Continue on to Cana, a medieval town that spans the lengthy crest of a hill, and take in its ancient military fortifications. Next, it's time for Stribugliano and the great views from Castiglioncello Bandini. For a wine break, visit the vineyards of Fonterenza (more Brunello), then end the day on the hill at Sant'Angelo in Colle for a stunning sunset.

Le Crete Senesi

Stark and haunting, Le Crete Senesi is a vast area in southeast Siena spanning to Arezzo. The landscape of lush rolling hills is at once dramatic and breathtaking. Take an adventurous 45-minute drive southeast from Siena via Taverne d'Arbia to Asciano and explore the town and 11th-century Basilica di Sant'Agata, which was constructed in beautiful travertine. From here, head south on SP451 to Chiusure for a glass of wine at Locanda Paradiso, a local hangout, and gaze at the endless hills. A short drive south on SP9 and you'll arrive in San Giovanni d'Asso, complete with a magical Romanesque church. Then, it's a 30-minute roundabout drive to Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a 14th-century Benedictine abbey with gorgeous library frescoes and glazed terra-cotta. Finally, head back to Asciano on the SP60 road. Stop when you're ready to take in the Val d'Asso and watch the sunset.

vacation tours of tuscany

TripSavvy / Jamie Ditaranto

Tuscany , with its spectacular cities, towns, and scenery, is one of Italy's top vacation destinations. Tuscany's many attractions include historic cities , art-filled museums and churches, great wine and food, medieval hill towns, beaches, and beautiful countryside.

Each part of the Tuscany region has its own unique personality. And while it's hard to narrow down a best-of list in an area of travel superlatives, the following are TripSavvy's top 10 places to visit for medieval and Renaissance architecture, gorgeous scenery, and of course, the food and wine.

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Florence, in the heart of Tuscany, is one of Italy's top cities to visit . Florence is an important Renaissance architecture and art center with several excellent  museums . Florence's cathedral, or Duomo , with its famous dome and its Baptistery, are architectural wonders that are not to be missed.

Many visitors use Florence as their base for winery tours or day trips to other towns in the region. Visit the Museo Galileo or the Palazzo Strozzi to get a feel for the history and culture of the area.

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Siena is a classic medieval hill town in Tuscany famous for its sizeable fan-shaped piazza, the Piazza del Campo, dominated by its bell tower, the Torre del Mangia.

Siena's annual summer horse race, Il Palio, is about as different from the Kentucky Derby as one can imagine: Bareback riders race the horses along the city's cobblestone streets, keeping with medieval tradition.

Siena's medieval streets are lined with shops and rustic trattoria serving traditional Tuscan cuisine off the main piazza. Find a cozy spot, preferably one filled with Italians, and sample local fare paired with a nice bottle of regional wine.

TripSavvy / Jamie Ditaranto

Pisa, in northern Tuscany, is famous for its leaning tower, which all visitors must climb and take an excellent touristy photo with. You'll be in the Piazza Dei Miracoli, where you can admire the cathedral and the baptistery, which date back to the Italian Renaissance.

Besides its tower, Pisa has much more to do and see. To visit its historic Piazza Dei Cavalieri, take a stroll along the Arno River. And before you leave Pisa, try the local delicacy, a chickpea flour bread called cecina.

If you visit Pisa in June, you're in for a treat. That's when the city holds a festival to honor its patron saint San Ranieri during its annual Giugno Pisano.

Lucca is famous for its Renaissance-era wall, which encircles the city, and its cobblestone streets. Walking and bicycling paths and gardens sit atop the wall, allowing visitors to walk entirely around Lucca's historic center.

In addition to being home to several historic cathedrals, Lucca has several well-preserved towers that provide fabulous views of the city and beyond.

Be sure to check out the home of the famous opera composer Giacomo Puccini, which is a popular museum in Lucca. And for authentic regional dishes like tortelli lucchese or zuppa di farro all lucchese, visit one of Lucca's excellent restaurants, such as Buralli or La Buca di Sant'Antonio.

Cortona is the Tuscan hill town made famous by Francis Mayes in her book "Under the Tuscan Sun." Surrounded by 3,000-year-old Etruscan walls, Cortona retains much of its history through its layers of architecture.

Cortona's stately buildings include the Abbazia Farneta and the Chiesa San Francesco. This area has a large American expatriate community, so tourists from the States will find plenty of English speakers.

San Gimignano

San Gimignano, known as the City of Beautiful Towers, is a classic medieval walled hill town famous for its 14 surviving medieval towers. These create a distinctive skyline visible from the surrounding countryside.

Be sure to visit the Museo Estrusco and the historic Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta. For local flavor, try one of the many cinghiale (wild boar) dishes at Cum Quibus or Ristorante San Martino.

Chianti Classico Wine Region

The Chianti Classico wine region lies between the larger cities of Florence and Siena and is a fascinating area to visit. The Chianti region has picturesque villages like Greve and, of course, many fine wineries. Start your wine tasting at Barone Ricasoli Winery and Brolio Castle .

Montepulciano

Montepulciano is yet another walled city in Tuscany, built on a sloping and narrow limestone ridge. Montepulciano has one of the most impressive main squares in Tuscany and has many beautiful Renaissance buildings, including the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino. Visit the Avignonesi or Gattavecchi vineyards or any of Montepulciano's many wineries for a taste of the famed Vino Nobile di Montipulciano. There are also several cantinas in town offering wine tastings and sales and local culinary products.

Pienza and Val D'Orcia

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Pienza, designed to be the ideal city, is a pretty Renaissance town in the Val D'Orcia of Tuscany. Pienza is famous for its pecorino cheese, Piccolomini Palace, and balcony overlooking the beautiful Val D'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Montecatini Terme

Montecatini Terme, known for its thermal waters, is one of Italy's top spa towns. It has several historic spas and spas with modern equipment for beauty and wellness treatments. Terme Tettuccio is a lavish classic spa with music performances daily during the season, worth a visit to see the Liberty-style architecture.

The town itself is pleasant and relaxed and makes a good base for visiting central and northern Tuscany. A historic funicular railway takes visitors up the hill to the old town of Montecatini Alto .

Green countryside near the medieval town of Volterra (province of Pisa) Tuscany

Pisa attracts more than five million tourists yearly to see its world-famous Leaning Tower. But few realize this proverbial “half-day city” is the gateway to Terre di Pisa, one of Italy's newest and most exciting DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wine appellations.

This up-and-coming wine region offers an unforgettable experience for wine lovers who want to travel slowly and escape the crowds pervasive in many Italian cities.

Imagine rolling Tuscan hills, vineyards stretching toward the horizon, and passionate winemakers eager to share their craft and explain how their wines are shaped by the contours of the land and centuries of history.

Throughout the province, wine lovers can sip regional wines and savor local food products and dishes, creating a truly Tuscan culinary adventure.

The Wines Of Terre di Pisa: A World of Varietals Awaits

Logo of Terre di Pisa

The Terre di Pisa DOC appellation was established in 2011, attesting to the unique character of the wines.

In 2018, 10 producers formed the Terre di Pisa Wine Consortium to raise awareness and promote the quality of these regional wines; the number has now grown to 19 in 2024.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Terre di Pisa wines offer a symphony of flavors. The carefully controlled Terre di Pisa DOC appellation includes Terre di Pisa Bianco, Terre di Pisa Vermentino, Terre di Pisa Rosato, Terre di Pisa Rosso, and Terre di Pisa Sangiovese.

Visitors can explore reds like Sangiovese, the king grape of the region, or whites like Vermentino. They can also indulge in rosės and sparkling wines.

Most high-quality wines with the Terre di Pisa DOC label are reds with at least 95% Sangiovese grapes. Winemakers rely on these and other indigenous grapes to produce interesting blends with international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.

This unique hyper-local terroir is blessed with sandy soil rich in limestone and clay. Millions of years ago, the land was part of the ocean, so seeing whole seashells as you walk among the vineyards is common. Some winemakers even find marine fossils under the soil dating back to this heritage.

The hills and valleys of Terre di Pisa are conducive to viniculture because of the area’s temperate climate, which has warm days, cool nights, moderate rainfall, and ocean breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea year-round. The wines offer minerality and salinity.

Beyond the Leaning Tower: Getting There and Where To Stay

Map of the provinces of Tuscany

Pisa is both the name of this province and its better-known capital city. While wine (along with the tilted tower) takes center stage, Terre di Pisa offers many diverse experiences.

Tourists can meander the two-lane roads traversing the countryside by car and discover this less-traveled province’s cultural, historical, and epicurean riches.

Terre di Pisa wineries are committed to sustainable practices, ensuring the land thrives for future generations. So, it’s not surprising that their farm stays offer a chance to unplug, reconnect with nature, and experience the simple pleasures of rural life.

Instead of large cookie-cutter hotels, many wineries offer rustic Tuscan farm-like accommodations. These small agriturismos can serve as a base for visiting some of the more than 40 wineries in the region or excursions to interesting towns and small villages nearby.

San Miniato, perched on three small hills, is best known for its white truffles, celebrated at a National White Truffle Festival held each November. Pontedera is the birthplace of the iconic Vespa motor scooter and the locale of its historic Piaggio factory and museum. The colorful art city of Peccioli was named the most beautiful village ( borgo) in Italy in 2024.

A few more of the many places worthy of visits include the architecturally stunning landscape of Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, the hometown of tenor Andrea Bocelli; the Roman Theater and Baths in Volterra; and the sandy beaches of Marina di Pisa.

10 Terre di Pisa Wineries That Host Guests

Vineyards of Merlot, Cabernet, and Sangiovese on the Pisan hills of Peccioli produce red, white, and ... [+] rosé wines.

Rural accommodations like those in the province of Pisa are generally restored rather than remodeled to preserve their Tuscan history and ambiance.

Coupled with direct sales from their wine shops, farm stays help provide a reliable income stream when nature compromises crops and creates unique opportunities for guests.

Here is a sampling of some Terre di Pisa wineries that host guests. In addition to finding a sense of place on-site, wine tourists typically visit other wineries and interesting towns nearby.

Badia di Morrona

The 600-acre Badia di Morrona estate, located amidst sloping hills between Terricciola and Casciana Terme, is one of the oldest wineries in Tuscany. It offers tours, tastings of its wines and EVO olive oil (with light lunch), and visits to its historic Benedictine abbey, the summer residence of the Bishops of Volterra in the late 15th century.

Each of six fully-equipped restored farmhouses, divided into villas and apartments, has swimming pools and is surrounded by greenery.

Castelvecchio Socita’Agricola

Located in the town of Terricciola in the Pisan hills, the family-run Castelvecchio Societa’Agricola has 10 hectares of vineyards managed by women. The winery offers cellar visits and tastings paired with local cold cuts, cheeses, bruschetta, and other seasonal products, as well as lunch or dinner of local Tuscan cuisine.

Visitors can arrange stays in either a restored barn or a portion of the original farmhouse restored by the family that offers views of the hills.

Fattoria Varramista

The heart of the 400-acre Fattoria di Varramista in Montopoli is an ancient villa (purchased by the Piaggio-Agnelli family in 1953) once the residence of Enrico Piaggio, famous for the Vespa brand. Varramista offers tours of the villa, the Italian garden, the cellars and vineyards, and tastings of the estate’s wine and EVO olive oil accompanied by Tuscan products.

Three farmhouses on the estate have private pools surrounded by olive groves; another is in the park near the manor. Guests at these residences can also hire mountain bikes, participate in cooking classes, and hire private chefs and/or drivers.

Villa Cosmiana

Sited on a gentle hill in Peccioli, this 17th-century, neoclassical Villa Cosmiana became part of the Antinori family estate in 1783. Abandoned in 1933, its new owners recently meticulously restored it to preserve its rich historical and artistic legacy. An English park with Italianate gardens surrounds the villa, along with 15 vineyards on 11 hectares. Wine tastings begin with a tour of the villa and its winemaking facilities before a light lunch.

The estate has three suites in the villa and four in the Fattoria (farm) that can be booked with a tasting dinner or discovery day.

Villa Saletta

Although wine production on this 1,760-acre working estate can be traced back to 980 AD, Villa Saletta is a modern, boutique winery. Located in a medieval village with ancient farmhouses in Palaia, the family owners lovingly restored a property that had fallen into ruin. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, visits to the winery and cantina, or a guided tour of the magnificent borgo.

Three villas have been renovated using traditional techniques, materials from the region, and modern luxury. The largest can accommodate up to 14 guests.

Pieve de’ Pitti

Located in the hills of Terricola, Pieve de’ Pitti is named after the Florentine Pitti family, which owned the estate until the end of the 17th century. The winery offers tours of the cellar and vineyards, wine tasting, and creative cooking courses.

Guests can stay in one of the five rooms of the Villa (a single large farmhouse surrounded by vineyards) or in one of three self-catering apartments in the Il Poggetto country house. The property also hosts weddings and special occasion parties.

Tenuta di Ghizzano

Tenuta di Ghizzano is an organic and biodynamic farm of 280 hectares, 18 of which are vineyards. The winery is located in the town of Ghizzano, a small frazione of Peccioli with a population of just over 300 people. The estate has vineyards, olive trees, cereal crops, woods, and poplar groves and hosts a range of “experiences,” from tastings to tours to personalized visits.

The two-story Villa Ginevra, a contemporary farmhouse immersed in the countryside, is a beautifully appointed four-bedroom residence filled with art and antiques. It offers a balcony overlooking the scenic hills.

Le Palaie Farm is located on a 150-hectare estate in Peccioli surrounding a 17th-century manor house. In addition to olive groves, arable land has been set aside to preserve the fauna and insects that help repopulate the environment. The winery also hosts special events, including weddings, tastings, and cellar visits.

The recently renovated manor house has seven apartments of different sizes and accommodations in another four independent houses.

Fattoria di Fibbiano

Fattoria Fibbiano is located in Terricola between the hills of Pisa and Volterra. The Cantoni family purchased the farm in 1997. The house's foundation was built in 1707 and is surrounded by vineyards, some over 100 years old. The property is home to three generations of this family. In addition to tastings, tours of the vineyards, picnics, Vespa adventures, and cooking lessons, guests learn about the architectural features of the historic farm. During the harvest, guests can experience olive and grape picking.

Apartments are located in the same building where the family lives. A communal vaulted living room and beautiful pool with panoramic views bring people together for conversation.

Podere la Chiesa

Podere La Chiesa is an ultra-contemporary winery that might be mistaken for an art museum. Located in Terricciola, the winery is an architectural masterpiece surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. The one million-year-old soil is rich in limestone, sand, and clay. The winery offers guided tours and tastings. In September, guests can participate in the 50-year-old Grape and Wine Festival held in Terricciola.

The winery is close to the little town of Casanova, which has a small BnB and Michelin-starred restaurant.

Don’t Forget the Leaning Tower

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is located in Piazza dei Miracoli, along with the Cathedral and ... [+] Baptistery.

Visitors to Terre di Pisa will be treated to an unforgettable experience that blends rolling hills with exceptional wines and warm hospitality.

But a half-day dedicated to the iconic Leaning Tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli is a must for any visitor.

Getting There

Getting to Terre di Pisa is convenient. International and domestic travelers can arrive through Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei Airport, named after the famous scientist born in Pisa).

Visitors also can arrive at the Pisa Centrale station from Florence via high-speed train in about 45 minutes. Auto rentals are available both at the airport and train station.
