Grand Teton Winter Wildlife Half Day Tour

Authorized permittee of the national park service, tour itinerary.

A four-hour wildlife safari spent in Grand Teton National Park on your own time with a private guide and private vehicle. For the discerning traveler who enjoys the level of service that a private tour provides, this is the tour for you! Let us customize our Private Grand Teton PM Wildlife Safari to your specific interests and needs. Private tours available every day! We are happy to pick you up from your place of lodging anywhere in Jackson or Teton Village. We will make arrangements to meet lodgers staying in outlying areas at a convenient location. The following is a good example of a 4-hour wildlife safari in Grand Teton National Park, keeping in mind the private safari can be customized to your specific needs.

We generally will start at the south end of Grand Teton and explore the areas more prone to wildlife activity. Our schedule sometimes can vary greatly depending on where wildlife has been congregating, the changing seasons, and various other factors. But a rough outline of our safari may go as follows.

We may find ourselves starting out on Moose-Wilson Rd. a great place for moose and elk sightings. From the north end of Moose-Wilson Road I like to give a look in the Blacktail Ponds, and then potentially make a detour east towards Antelope Flats and Mormon Row to view Bison and Pronghorn, eventually heading up to Oxbow Bend, Jackson Lake, and Willow Flats Overlook. Maybe further north as well depending on where Grizzly has been sighted, etc.

Upon reaching the north end of our safari we will usually head south along the Teton park road, swinging through Jenny Lake for the potential bear and elk sighting as well. As we head south we will be looking for Elk on the timberlines, as well as grizzly and black bears on the move. By the time the sun gets too high in the sky, we will have returned to Jackson, usually about 9:00pm.

Again this safari itinerary can alter dramatically, but you should get a great idea of what we have in store.

10 Things To Do In Grand Teton National Park: Complete Guide To Wyoming's Most Scenic Landscape

F eaturing hundreds of miles of hiking trails, shimmering lakes, and the rugged Teton Range (one of Wyoming's many mountain ranges and a subrange of the Rocky Mountains), Grand Teton National Park is brimming with outdoor adventures. Established in 1929 , the national park features more than 310,000 acres of terrain — from sweeping valleys and meadows to its mountainous peaks — making it the perfect destination for exploring the unrivaled wilds of Wyoming.

Top Things To Do In Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Wondering what to do in Grand Teton ? From spellbinding hikes to picturesque overlooks, here are some of the best excursions the Wyoming national park has to offer.

Tour The National Museum of Wildlife Art

Before heading into Grand Teton, visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art, which is located about two miles from the park's entrance in Jackson Hole.

See life-size sculptures of some of the area's most wondrous animals and take in all the wildlife art the museum offers before setting off to the park to see it all in person.

  • Address: 2820 Rungius Rd, Jackson, WY 83001
  • Hours: Open daily from May 1 to October 31 from 10 am to 5 pm and November 1 to April 30 from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm
  • Cost: $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, $8 for first child, $4 for additional children (children under the age of four are free)

Get Out On The Waters Of Jenny Lake

One of the most frequented parts of Grand Teton, Jenny Lake sits at the foot of the Teton Range in the heart of the park.

The second-largest lake in the park , spanning about 1,191 acres, visitors can explore the lake's great waters in a multitude of ways, from canoeing and kayaking to boat rides and simply relaxing on the shore.

  • Address: Jenny Lake Visitor Center, Moose, WY 83012

Get more information on the area at the Jenny Lake Visitor Center. Located in the historic Crandall Studio, it is situated near the parking area. Check the National Park Service website for seasonal hours.

Explore Hanging Canyon

While at Jenny Lake, hop aboard a boat for a trip to the other side to visit the incredibly remote area known as Hanging Canyon.

Although visitors can hike around the lake to reach the destination (or traverse it via a kayak or canoe), a shuttle boat ride will save about a two-mile hike roundtrip, plus it's a great way to enjoy the serene waters of the lake.

  • Address: Jenny Lake Boating, Visitor Center, Jenny Lake, Moose, WY 83012
  • Hours: Open daily from 7 am to 7 pm
  • Cost: $20 for adults roundtrip and $12 for adults one-way; $12 for children roundtrip and $10 for children one-way (shuttle boat service)

The Jenny Lake Boating service runs about every 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day. Visit the company's website to learn more.

Splash In The Hidden Falls

Another must-see natural wonder on the west side of Jenny Lake is Hidden Falls , a 100-foot cascading waterfall, which can be accessed via a short one-mile out-and-back hike that features about 300 feet of elevation gain.

Continue up the trail about a half mile past Hidden Falls to Inspiration Point , which offers panoramic views of Jenny Lake, the Jackson Hole Valley, and the tallest group of mountains in the Teton Range, the Cathedral Group: Mount Owen, Teewinot, and the Grand Teton.

See The Mormon Row Historic District

Aside from the mountain range itself, arguably one of the most recognizable features of the national park are the John Moulton barn and the T.A. Moulton barn, which were built by brothers on adjacent homesteads.

The two historic barns dot Mormon Row, an area that was settled by Mormon homesteaders looking to establish new communities outside Salt Lake City .

  • Address: T.A. Moulton Barn, 13040 Antelope Flats Rd, Moose, WY 83012

Embark On A Hike Through Grand Teton

Some of the best scenic hikes can be found in Grant Teton National Park. And, with more than 250 miles of hiking trails available in the area, including the Woodland Trail Loop, Swan Lake Trail Loop, Bradley Lake Loop, and Jenny Lake Loop, the options are seemingly endless.

Visit the National Park Service's website for a more detailed list of available hikes and to read hiking tips and other important information, such as how high elevation impacts breathing, precautions surrounding coming into contact with bears, and dealing with rapid weather changes.

Take A Scenic Drive Along The Teton Range

In addition to hiking the Teton Range, visitors can buckle up and embark on a scenic drive through the area. Picturesque routes include Jenny Lake Scenic Drive, Moose-Wilson Road, Signal Mountain Summit Road, and Teton Park Road.

Drive slowly in the evening and always be on the lookout for wildlife crossing the road, including elk, bison, and moose. Visit the National Park Service's website for alerts on any road closures in the area.

Catch The Sunrise At Oxbow Bend

Located about a mile east of the Jackson Lake Junction on Highway 89, the Oxbow Bend overlook is one of the best places in the park to catch the sunrise or sunset.

With views overlooking the Snake River and the stunning mountains, the area is also home to a plethora of wildlife, including otters, moose, and bears.

Go Whitewater Rafting Along Snake River

A great option for thrill-seekers, tackle the rushing waters of Snake River via whitewater rafting. Companies like Jackson Hole Whitewater Rafting offer a variety of rafting options, from a 7-Mile Teton Views Scenic Float, available from June 11 through September 30, to a Classic Raft Whitewater Adventure, which runs from May 5 through September 30.

  • Address: 945 West Broadway, Jackson, WY
  • Cost: Visit the company's website for pricing and to book reservations.

See The View From Signal Mountain

Another place to get captivating views of the entire area is from the stunning summit of Signal Mountain, a 7,727-foot mountain in Jackson Hole that can be accessed by car or via hiking.

If opting for the former, simply drive up Signal Mountain Summit Road to the summit. And for those wanting to make the trek on foot, simply take Signal Mountain Trail from the Signal Mountain Parking Lot all the way up.

The hike to Signal Mountain Summit is a moderately difficult 6.8-mile trail out and back.

Best Time To Visit

Due to harsh weather conditions, many of the park's roads and facilities, including visitor centers, are closed during the winter months (usually beginning in October). So, the best time to visit is from mid-May to late September.

And, the spring and fall months are perhaps more favorable due to the fact that they're less crowded as the summer months can be quite busy.

Best Ways To Get Around

Considering Grand Teton National Park spans more than 310,000 acres, it's far too large to explore all the great sights completely on foot, so the best way to explore Wyoming's natural treasure is definitely by car.

It's imperative that motorists obey all speed limit signs and other traffic signs due to wildlife crossing on the roads, from furry rodents like squirrels to the mammoth bison that freely roam the area.

Tips To Know When Visiting

A good time is all but guaranteed in Grand Teton National Park, but for first-timers visiting the area, there are several things to know to ensure the trip is seamless. First and foremost, plan ahead, especially if planning to visit during the peak season of summer.

Parking lots can also fill up quickly, so try to visit the park before 9 am and after 4 pm to avoid the crowds.

Also, be aware that many parts of the park may be closed during the winter due to harsh weather conditions, including certain roads and facilities. Visit the National Park Service website for information regarding seasonal road closures and other winter weather alerts.

And, last but certainly not least, when it comes to helping keep wildlife wild, respect the wildlife by leaving no trace, driving safely through the park, and not attempting to interact with the animals.

What animals can I expect to see?

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is home to an amazingly diverse list of wildlife species! Some of the most frequently observed animals on our safairs are elk, eagles, bison, moose, mule deer, and bears. Black bears are more common than grizzly bears, but both species are most often seen in spring and fall. Wolves are present, but these shy animals are a very uncommon sight in Grand Teton. Other critters such as badgers, coyotes, beavers, otters, and many many more live in this ecosystem, but are not an everyday occurrence! The thrill of wildlife is not knowing what’s around the corner. Every species has certain times of the year where they are more or less likely to be seen, so this will depend on the season in which you are visiting.

What highlights are there to see in Grand Teton?

Grand Teton National Park is rich in both geological wonders and human history. The spectacular Teton range is visible from most areas of the park, and they look different from every angle. Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake are stunning sights to see. Oxbow Bend is a popular spot for a picturesque view of Mount Moran and a great place to look for birds and aquatic species along the Snake River. Stand where Ansel Adams snapped his famous shot of the mountains from the Snake River Overlook. Mormon Row, where you can find the famous Moulton Barn, is a wonderful place to step into the past days of early settlers. There are many more beautiful and fascinating things to see, it would be impossible to list them all here!

What kind of vehicle will we be in?

We provide both private and public tours, but we keep our group sizes small, so you will not be on a big bus. We use spacious SUVs and passenger vans. This allows us to focus on individual guests more closely, have a more personable experience, and we can pull over easily for wildlife sightings!

Where are the Elk?

A herd of antlered elk in a snowy field

When leaves begin to topple from trees and the chatter of morning birds vanishes, the silent hum of Earth abruptly reminds us that winter is quickly approaching. Ranger Kari is out on the National Elk Refuge in Jackson, Wyoming, looking through a pair of binoculars at a cliffy butte, called Miller Butte.

It's a cold autumn morning on the Refuge. "Where are the elk?" shouts an excited visitor from a nearby parking spot. "They are way up there!" responds Ranger Kari, as she directs the visitors attention to the distant mountains across from the Refuge.

From late spring through early autumn, elk are not present on the Refuge. Rather, they spend this portion of the year in the Teton, Gros Ventre, and Absaroka Mountains. "Think of the National Elk Refuge as the 'National Winter Elk Refuge'" Ranger Kari tells the visitor.

In September and October, colder temperatures accompanied by snow will pressure elk to begin an arduous but necessary movement from the nearby mountains into the valley of Jackson Hole. Migration is an incredibly beautiful and exceedingly rare wildlife event. Visitors to the area during this time are delighted to see elk gathering in large numbers north of the Refuge in Grand Teton National Park. "Your best bet to observe elk in the autumn is to head to Grand Teton National Park. Elk are gathering for their annual mating, called a rut. At this time, bull elk are calling out to cow elk through high pitched calls, or bugles!" Ranger Kari exclaims. "The calls are haunting and boisterous. It makes me think of prehistoric creatures who roamed the Earth millions of years ago."

A herd of elk in a snowy field and craggy mountains in the backdrop.

From November through December, elk will continue their seasonal migration, eventually resting on the National Elk Refuge. Roughly 8,000 elk will spend winter on the Refuge, in search of food, water, shelter, and space. During this time, visitors are able to see large numbers of elk gathering in open fields on the Refuge. Many visitors to the Refuge will take a sleigh ride or travel along the Refuge Road to observe elk. "If you want to see elk on the Refuge, visit us between January and March. That is my favorite time of year on the Refuge," Ranger Kari tells the visitor.

Dozens of elk on a partially snowy hill

"Well what are you looking at if there are no elk here?" The visitor curiously asks. "Great question! I am looking at a herd of Bighorn sheep!" On the cliffs of Miller Butte, a herd of Bighorn sheep are grazing and resting on a steep slope.

Bighorn sheep on cliffs.

Bighorn sheep are migratory as well. "They don't spend the entirety of the year on the Refuge. In fact, they just showed up!" Ranger Kari continues. "They have traveled from the high rocky plateaus of the Gros Ventre Mountains, east of the Refuge."

There is always wildlife on the Refuge, however, many animals in this areas are migratory. The Refuge is the seasonal and permanent home to numerous species. "A great rule of thumb on the Refuge: if it is an animal with hooves or feathers, it's home probably changes with the weather!" Ranger Kari tells the visitor.

8 Scenic Views You'll Only Find In The Wyoming Countryside

Some of the most scenic views in Wyoming are in its countryside. From Grand Teton to hidden gem byways, these spots offer Wyoming's best scenery.

  • Wyoming's national parks offer breathtaking views, but the whole state is a treasure trove of picture-perfect scenery.
  • Cody serves as a beautiful base camp for Yellowstone exploration, offering an easy drive along Chief Joseph Scenic Byway.
  • Buffalo Bill Dam offers a free educational experience on water conservation, highlighting the importance of this precious resource.

Home to the stunning Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming offers breathtaking scenic views year-round. Each season offers unique views of wildlife, mountains, and landmarks that make this state’s natural beauty special. Wyoming’s many wide open spaces and rural settings offer so many opportunities to soak in the scenery, reflect, and get that perfect photo.

There are seven scenic national parks in Wyoming that offer amazing natural scenery, but the entire state is full of picture-perfect views just waiting to be discovered.

10 Unique Must-Try Wyoming Day Trips

8 chief joseph scenic byway, this stunning and educational 55-mile byway from cody is easily one of the best scenic drives in wyoming.

Many summer visitors to Yellowstone National Park use Cody as a base camp, which is easily one of the prettiest towns in Wyoming . Located 55 miles from Yellowstone’s East Entrance, the park is an easy drive away along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, with beautiful scenery all the way.

For an educational complement to the scenic views, listen to the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway segment on the TravelStory app. This free one-hour episode adds historical context and does not require cell service, which is nonexistent on the drive from Cody to Yellowstone.

Yellowstone’s East Entrance usually opens in mid-May and can fluctuate due to late snow, so make sure to check before setting out on this drive.

10 Things To Do In Wyoming This Winter

7 castle geyser, this thousands-of-years-old geyser inside yellowstone national park is a fun alternative to old faithful.

Although Old Faithful, whose eruptions require timing a visit to see , is probably what comes to mind when people think of geysers in Yellowstone National Park, Castle Geyser is also bucket list worthy when it comes to Wyoming's outdoor scenery.

Castle Geyser has a unique, large, tall geyserite cone structure that may be reminiscent of a castle. This large structure is possibly due to trees growing in the area years prior that became coated in sinter and allowed the height to build up.

Castle Geyser is located a short distance from Old Faithful, so it’s easy to see both. It erupts, on average, once every 14 hours, so some planning is necessary to witness the eruption.

There are many geysers and hydrothermal attractions worth seeing in Yellowstone , but use caution when exploring. Stay on the designated walkways, don’t engage in horseplay, and don’t attempt to touch the water or steam.

6 Buffalo Bill Dam

Six miles outside the town of cody, this is beautiful scenery meets water conservation.

Travelers looking for free and interesting things to do in Cody can make a trip to the Buffalo Bill Dam Visitor’s Center . On the National Register of Historic Places, the visitor’s center opens for the season in early May.

Not only is the sight of the rushing water a beautiful view, but the experience is educational and fun for anyone interested in how stuff works. Buffalo Bill Cody, an iconic figure of the Old West and founder of the town of Cody, recognized the importance of water and convinced the U.S. government to build a dam to conserve this precious resource.

The exhibits in the visitor’s center go into detail about the construction and benefits of the dam.

7 Mountain Towns In Wyoming To Retire

5 grand teton national park scenic drives, witness breathtaking mountain majesty in all directions.

Travelers seeking scenic beauty can’t go wrong with scenic drives in Grand Teton National Park . Pristine lakes and the majestic mountain terrain are always stunning, and if views of wildlife arise, even better. The park roads offer numerous turnouts where visitors can stop and gaze out upon magnificent vistas.

These three scenic drives within Grand Teton rise to the top of the list, although the entire park is a treat for the eyes:

Grand Teton 42 Mile Scenic Drive

This loop has views of all the park's beauty from the Tetons to rivers, creeks, lakes, and plains. This is an easy drive that allows visitors to see the park without getting out to hike. Allow about two hours, depending on how often you want to stop.

Signal Mountain Summit Road

Climb to the top of Signal Mountain and be treated to sweeping vista views. This five-mile road takes about 20 minutes to climb. RVs and trailers are not permitted. When driving Signal Mountain Summit Road, bring binoculars to see the wildlife below.

Moose-Wilson Road

This road is a popular spot to see wildlife in the early mornings or evenings. The entire route is 14.6 miles, but the scenic portion most people are interested in is the eight-mile stretch between Teton Village and Moose , as that is where the most wildlife sightings are.

RVs and trailers are prohibited on the eight miles of Moose-Wilson Road between Teton Village and Moose, as the roads are quite rough. Be prepared for a slow journey.

Entry to Grand Teton National Park is $35 per car .

4 Jenny Lake

Located inside grand teton national park, this glacial lake offers epic scenery.

Visitors can enjoy the view of Jenny Lake via boat or from one of the park’s hiking trails. Jenny Lake Boating operates both a shuttle service to take people across the lake and also more in-depth tours.

The middle of Jenny Lake is a favorite place to capture photographs that balance lake and mountain views.

This Least Populated Wyoming Town Is Home To Beautiful Attractions

3 mormon row, this scenic area inside grand teton national park combines scenic views with history.

Mormon Row is very popular with photographers, and some of the most recognizable images of Grand Teton National Park come from this location. Settled by Mormons coming from Idaho – hence the name – Mormon Row once consisted of 27 farms, six of which are still standing.

The John Moulton Barn and the T.A. Moulton Barn are two of the most photographed places in the park and add an element of depth to the stunning scenery of the Tetons. Mormon Row is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Want memorable pictures? Wake up before dawn to get the best photographs of the Mormon Row barns and the glow of the Grand Tetons .

2 Devil’s Tower National Monument

This imposing prairie structure is believed to be sacred by northern plains indians and other indigenous people..

Although Devil’s Tower was made famous by the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind , approximately 500,000 people visit annually to marvel at this geological wonder’s natural beauty.

Located in Northeast Wyoming, in Crook County, this dramatic structure rises towards the sky with the Black Hills as a backdrop. The hundreds of cracks can be used for climbing.

Devil’s Tower is operated by the National Parks Service. Entry is $25 per car . Climbers must register and ensure they have the appropriate equipment to climb.

One of the many fun facts about Devil's Tower is that it is the United States' first National Monument.

1 Big Horn Scenic Byway

Inspiring scenery from the powder river basin to the big horn basin.

This 58-mile stretch of paved highway traverses the crest of the Big Horn Mountains, treating drivers to views of thick forests, lush meadows, waterfalls, and deep canyons.

There are lots of places to stop and take in the views or plan a longer stop/mini-adventure along the byway. There are opportunities to camp, fish, hike, and explore local sites.

Check out Shell Falls at the western end of the Big Horn Scenic Byway. This impressive 120-foot plunge is accompanied by nature trails and interpretive signs. It's open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily from mid-May through mid-September.
