Bike Trip to Europe? Trek Travel - Anyone Use?

Looking into doing a trip next year. Havent decided exactly where? I would prefer not to have to take my bike with me. Trek Travel has some nice options…Something like this one appeals to me.

Anyone have any feedback on Trek Travel or any other options out there?

I’ve been on three trips with Trek Travel and would 100% recommend them. One of the riders I met on a previous trip actually did the Italy Coast to Coast recently and it looked amazing.

No experience but very interested too. Also if anybody can provide insight in the different options (more or less guided; get bike there; length, etc.) and cost. What is worth it and what is not? Last, has anybody gone “alone” and met new people on the trip? Is it better to go with a group/partner?

We’ve done a ride camp (AZ - no longer available), and two of the more involved trips (Pyrenees Sea to Sea and Classic Climbs of the Tour). On our what shall we do next list is Mallorca ride camp, and Pyrenees again. A guy I know through social media just did Portland to Portland (the XC USA trip).

The point to point trips are expensive but when you look at the sheer amount of logistics involved, the cost begins to make more sense. The bikes are always in pristine condition and the guides are excellent, regardless of which kind of trip you go on.

We have gone on all our trips as a couple and there have been a mix of other couples/friends on the trip together/single people.

We haven’t been on their luxury/easier trips so can’t speak to those.

I expect those I ride with won’t go but I don’t intend to not let that stop me. I have done solo trips before but they were not to cycle.

Yes the ride across Italy looks interesting. More climbing then I normally do but just gives me something to prep for. Good to hear your trips with trek went well

I seem to recall Chad mentioning on one of the podcasts that he had done a Trek travel trip (could have been a similar company) and highly recommended it as an experience. I’ve been in the market for doing one of their trips for a while

I did the 7 day Trek Travel Bike Camp in Mallorca in April 2022 and had an outstanding experience. It was exactly what I was looking for as a solo traveler who wanted to ride somewhere awesome. There were 12 guests (of all skill and fitness levels) and 3 guides. Each morning they had a route planned out on the head units (I brought my own to use instead) and gave a quick overview for everyone outlining where the van would be parked along the route (with food, gels, lunches, water, electrolytes, etc). Everyone headed out at their own speeds, either with others or alone, for the days ride. I prefer to ride alone, so it was great to test myself at my own speed/effort, knowing that the support van would be waiting at the top of the hardest climb/etc to refill and encourage me. And yes, Sa Calobra is as every bit amazing as you’ve heard! At the end of the each day, they took care of the bikes for you, while you chatted everything cycling with other like minded people. Overall, it was fantastic experience, and in fact, I’m doing it again this Spring (they have a camp in Girona as well, but I chose Mallorca again because I loved the rural hotel estate).

You can order it online but you can just as well get it at any gas station near both sides of the border. It’s super easy, they sell them everywhere - car registration is not required, you just stick it onto the windshield.

Just thought I would update my own post on a cycling trip. I ended up doing a cycling Trip in Spain with Trek Travel. It was a ride in the Andalucia region in mid September.

The trip, accommodations, food etc were better than I ever expected. An absolute amazing trip. Everything was taken care of for you from the little things of water bottles filled for you every morning to the I need help and can you take me back to the hotel. The riding was great and the group that were on the trip were all great to be with.

I have travelled a lot but never to cycle. This definitely was one of my best trips. Now planning for a trip next year.

Your biking adventures sound incredible! It’s awesome to hear about all the places you’ve pedaled through. I’ve always wanted to explore Europe on two wheels, and your experiences with Trek Travel definitely make it tempting. The idea of having everything sorted out for you, from bike maintenance to guiding, sounds like a dream, especially when tackling those long point-to-point routes.

Italy

Enlighten the senses

Italy bike tours.

Of all European countries, none draws visitors over and over again like Italy. A peninsula extending into the Mediterranean Sea, Italy consists of 21 diverse regions of villages and picturesque towns set amidst rolling hills, vineyards, mountains, lakes, cliffs and islands.

Each region has its unique charm, but all share the “Italian” view that life should be taken at a slow pace with time to enjoy conversation, food and drink.

Together, Italy’s regions boast the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. Packed with historical treasures, Italy’s cycling tours allow visitors to indulge in the spectacular natural landscape.

“The area was absolutely wonderful... just one adventure after another going through the small villages and beautiful towns.”

This amazing trip follows a gorgeous itinerary through unforgettable mountains with stunning views, cozy 3-star accommodations and regional cuisine. We focus exclusively on the Italian Dolomites, one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the world! The Dolomites are a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site, universally valued for their unique and exceptional natural beauty. Geologically distinct (consisting mostly of high-quality limestone) and with fantastically unusual shapes and features, they have inspired artists, scientists and outdoors enthusiasts for centuries.

Alternating between towering, alpine passes and lush, diverse valleys, we explore a wonderland of scenery and adventure. The magic of these Italian landscapes emerge in detail as our week progresses and we discover alpine plateaus, dramatic massifs, pristine rivers and lakes, fields of wildflowers, fairy-tale villages, awe-inspiring mountain vistas and a lot more.

We will visit several fascinating World War II relics including mountain bunkers and defensive outposts, which for many guests is an unexpected highlight. After soaking in the views and learning some of the region’s fascinating history, we’ll descend gradually back towards civilization and catch a short transfer back to our accommodations. Meals: What to Expect

This Alps hiking tour features a combination of in-town meals and meals prepared by your guide. Most lunches are prepared on the trail by your guides. Italian meals with Austrian and German influences will be had in our hotels and nearby towns! Bread, grains, pastas, rice, polenta, local cheese, and pork products are all staples in this region.

We can often accommodate vegan, vegetarian, kosher and non-gluten diets and make adjustments for food allergies. These and other special dietary requests may require an additional fee, and in some destinations may be more difficult to accommodate than others. Safety Precautions

Your safety is our top priority. Our hiking tours are led by professional hiking guides, all of whom are wilderness-certified first responders or EMT’s, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience. Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.

In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the  Center for Disease Control website  for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

Essential Eligibility Criteria (“EEC”)  have been specifically identified to help you understand the skills and abilities necessary to participate on each Wildland trip, and they apply uniformly to all potential trip participants, irrespective of the presence or absence of any disability.

Once you identify a trip in which you may be interested, please carefully review the  EEC  and itinerary details. If after reviewing the EEC that apply to your desired trip, you determine you need an accommodation in order to meet the EEC, please  contact us  prior to registering to discuss your requested accommodation.

The EEC exist for your own safety and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are unable to meet the EEC for the trip, with or without an accommodation, you are not eligible for that trip. If you register and arrive for a trip for which you do not meet the EEC, you will be disqualified from participation on the trip and will be dismissed or evacuated from the trip without a refund.

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Check out our  Meet Our Team  page for staff bios.

Guide Working Parameters

Guides are required to take 8 hours off each 24-hour period to sleep, recuperate, take personal/down time…etc. In addition, as part of the 8 hours off they must sleep/rest or be in their tents/rooms  uninterrupted  for a minimum of 5 hours each night. We ask guests to respect these requirements and to not interrupt guides’ off time and sleep time unless there is a true emergency.

Age Restrictions

Age restrictions on this trip are as follows:

  • 12 and older to join scheduled tours (mixed groups)
  • 5 and older to join private tours, with final approval and specific logistical requirements (such as porter or stock assist) determined on a case by case basis

Trip Insurance Requirements

Field evacuation, repatriation, and medical insurance is required on all Alps trips as a condition of partnership terms with our European vendors (field evacuation and repatriation minimum coverage is a combined $200,000 USD).

If you need to purchase field evacuation, repatriation, or medical insurance we recommend IMG/iTravelinsured. They are one of the world’s leading providers of travel insurance and policies meet all Alps requirements.

For information on the recommended IMG/iTravelinsured policies please  click here .

If you already have the required insurance or wish to purchase from anyone other than IMG/iTravelinsured, we recommend careful consultation with the provider to ensure appropriate coverage. This is because many providers have a number of policy exclusions.

Weather in the Alps

The location of the Alps and their tremendous elevation variations lead to significant and sometimes unpredictable temperatures and weather patterns, both in different ranges and in a particular range itself. Due to the Alps’ location in central Europe, they are influenced by moist air off the Atlantic, cold polar air from northern Europe, fluctuating air masses; and warm Mediterranean air flows northward.

Due to these extraordinary forces acting on the Alps’ weather, we recommend following our clothing list closely (in your trip packet when you register), as guests are best served by being prepared for a broad range of possible temperatures and weather conditions.

The average temperatures and precipitation in Alps are:

Katherine G

I had the best time on this trip.

This was an incredible trip! Everything was so well-planned and organized. I love Wildland trips because I’m able to relax and enjoy the best hikes, delicious food & great company knowing our guides will keep us all safe & having fun. Matthieu & Willy were excellent guides & are really fun to travel with. They accommodated everyone in our group on the hikes by occasionally splitting us into two groups and giving us the option to choose the level of difficulty we felt like taking on that day. The more challenging routes were so much fun and when we got to places on the trail that were narrow and steep with loose rocks that I would have been nervous to take on my own, Matthieu & Willy’s instruction along with their calm confidence took away my fear. Our meals together both in the restaurants & our mountain picnics were all so fun and delicious! Some other highlights were our clean, comfortable hotels and transportation, the dinner in Cortina d’Ampezzo with time to walk around & explore the town, the paddle boats on Lake Misurina, the beautiful sound of cowbells we sometimes encountered on the hikes, and of course our wonderful group! I made great new friends & had so many interesting, fun conversations with the amazing people in our group. I highly recommend traveling with Wildland, this trip in particular & definitely these guides. They make sure you see all of the best views, accomplish the most challenging, fun hikes, experience the food & culture and stay safe, comfortable, smiling & laughing the whole time!

Still savoring the trip

This was my 6th trip with Wildland. It again exceeded my expectations. The itenerary was well thought out. The food was beyond delicious. I cannot say enough wonderful things about my guides. Not only were they very nice people, I felt their attention to safety and group cohesiveness was excellent. I never worried about any details, they had it all under control. There were some very challenging hikes and they were always encouraging and helped us when needed. I cannot find anything that needed to be improved. I am still savoring the trip and almost ready to start planning the next one.

I can't wait to do my next adventure with Wildland!

I did this as a gift for my mom's 70th birthday...I couldn't think of a better way to spend time with her. The guides made this trip. Having two guides allowed for more aggressive and more leisurely, but challenging, route options to accommodate all parties. Matthew and Wilfred our guides could not be better ambassadors for Wildland - both technically and as awesome human beings. They made sure my mom was safe but challenged her to do things she didn't think she could do #gratitude. Because the trip was so well organized it felt like 2 weeks but was only 5 days - I never once had to think about anything logistically - they took care of everything. I can't wait to do my next adventure with Wildland!

Italy – Italian Dolomites

Alta Via 1, Dolomites, Italy © C Masters

Trekking in the Italian Dolomites – “the most beautiful mountains in the world”

“The most beautiful mountains in the world” is how Reinhold Messner described the Dolomites when he supported their successful UNESCO World Heritage bid. Here at trekMountains we agree with him because of:

  • the variety – every turn you take in the Dolomites offers a new view
  • the adaptability – the Dolomite mountains offer walking for everyone – whether you are looking for a gentle stroll, a family walk, a mountain experience or a challenging via ferrata
  • the hospitality in the excellent network of mountain rifugi and hotels in the area is exceptional – you can always be assured of a warm welcome in the Dolomites
  • the incredible diversity of flora and fauna.
  • the Dolomites are simply stunning in every season

We think that all these factors combine to make the mountain trekking in the Dolomites the very best hiking anywhere in the world, and that is why we have become Dolomites specialists since trekMountains first began in 2010.

We’ll use our extensive experiences of the Dolomites to ensure that we pick the best accommodation and the best route to suit you. Let us know what you’d like and then simply leave the hassle of booking accommodation to us.

As the paths are well-marked and we give you great walk instructions, maps with the route highlighted and GPX files if you want them, most clients choose to do these trips on a self-guided basis.

Watch our video about Trekking in the Italian Dolomites:

We tailor the route and accommodation to suit your needs for all our Italian walking holidays. Our Italian Dolomites treks are shown below:

If you’re not sure where to start looking for your next walking holiday, we would recommend that you look at the Alta Via 1 – the Dolomite’s flagship high level route. Our flexible itinerary makes it easy for us to fit some of Italy’s best hiking into whatever length of holiday you have.

Picture yourself walking in Italy’s warm summer mountain temperatures, blue skies, sunshine, looking for edelweiss, watching ibex, chamois and marmot and enjoying a well-earned drink of Italian wine on the balcony of a quality mountain rifugio high in the mountains away from every day life while watching the sun turn the Dolomite mountains their famous pink colour. Those are the reasons why we love hiking the mountains of Italy – why would you choose anywhere else for your next walking holiday?

The Dolomites are most easily accessed via the culturally-unique city of Venice, and a stay there makes a great addition to the start or end of your trek.

Trip of a lifetime. Could not have been any better. Would recommend to others.
The bike tour was fabulous - the itinery covered many interesting towns, great scenery from contry to ocean, much variation and it was never too hard.
This tour exceeded my expectations, on so many levels. The riding was wonderful, the countryside was glorious, the food was outstanding....but the attention to detail, from guides Luca and Rikki, was just phenomenal. If you want to tour Tuscany by bike, in a way that make you feel totally connected to the area, book this trip! It will not disappoint!

"Enjoyed each of the destinations. The organised activities were excellent, in particular the wine tasting and olive oil tasting. The local guides were very good. The standard of accommodation was reasonable. The 3 hour wait for transfer at Naples could have been better organised either as a shorter wait or have baggage storage included to allow for a short visit to the city centre.

Hike the Mont Blanc Circuit Trek thru France, Italy and Switzerland

trek travel ride across italy

Hike the Tour du Mont Blanc

Considered by many to be the most beautiful hike in western Europe (and some would argue the WORLD!) , this epic hike takes you through three countries:   France, Italy and Switzerland on a magnificent 110 miles (170km) .  You’ll walk through alpine meadows, historic villages and forests all while gazing at the stunning granite peaks of the European Alps of the Mont Blanc Massif (mountain range)!

One night you can splurge on a gourmet French meal and the next day, after a day’s hike, be relishing a fabulous pasta dish in Italy!  You’ll cross borders, encounter multiple languages (mostly French and Italian, and some German), and experience multiple cultures, food and customs.

Our guest today is  Linda Cohen Dickens , who with her husband, Harry, hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc with   Active Adventures   (this is one of their signature tours).  In the podcast (there’s a link to listen at the top of the page), she describes the scenery, the challenges and the wonderful food she ate and the interesting people she met.

Straddle Two Countries at once!  France and Switzerland + Italy and France

trek travel ride across italy

How Hard is Mont Blanc?

This is a difficult hike (ATA rating of 4-5) but  IT IS DOABLE  if you are in shape and you train (see my training schedule below)!  This is not a hike to ‘learn on the job’.  No technical skills are required, but there are some steep ascents and descents  (bring your poles!!!) .  Also, like most mountains, even in the summer, you need to always be prepared for extreme weather conditions and sudden changes.

Is Hiking Mont Blanc Expensive?

One great thing about this trip is that you can tailor it to both your time AND budget!   You can do it on the cheap by backpacking or camping (forwarding your pack), you can stay in the mountain huts, or upgrade to pensions and hotels (some legs you will need to use the hut or skip ahead).  If you go with a guided tour like Linda and her husband did with my affiliate  Active Adventures –they make all the arrangements for you – see links on the  free Travel Planner  for guidance.

trek travel ride across italy

Our guest today, Linda, used my affiliate  Active Adventures  for her trip. In fact, she’s the one who introduced me to this amazing company. Unlike traditional hiking tour companies,  Active Adventures   always adds a little twist to make it multi-sport. You’ll often have the opportunity to kayak or cycle, or do other cool things as well as predominantly hiking. They make all the arrangements for you, so  all you have to do is show up!

Be sure to let Active Adventures know that Active Travel Adventures sent you (I know the company names sound similar, but we are two different companies).  Please use my links!  At no additional cost to you , you’ll be helping to support the program and to help keep it ad free – thanks!  Kit

Typical Mont Blanc Circuit Itinerary

You can use this table to get an idea of how much daily ascent and descent you can expect, how hard each day will be and about how long you will be hiking each day.  This is a very challenging adventure and you must train for it, both for your own safety and enjoyment, and so you can keep up with your chosen tour group.  Here’s a link to my Training For Adventure Travel that can help.

Remember that you have ALL DAY to do it!   You can do this!!!  I’ve rounded up the daily time averages .  To use this chart, for example, Leg 1:  Les Houches, you would have all day to hike ten miles (16 km) , and during the course of the day, you will be climbing a total of  2120′ up (646 meters), and descending over the day 2075′ (633 meters ).  So of the 16 km (= 16000 meters) you are hiking that day, 646m + 633m = 1279m (1.3 km) of ascent or descent, which means about 8% of the hike you will be going up or down, and the rest of the time won’t be killer.  This does not tell you if you have sharp ascents or descents.   That’s where your guide book comes in handy .  The hours listed above can give you an idea, too.

Accommodations on the Mont Blanc Circuit

The beauty of hiking the Mont Blanc Circuit is that you have many options to fit your budget when you plan your lodging accommodations, from remote and rustic mountain refuges along the route to five star hotels.

If you work with a fully guided tour company, like Active Adventures , they have preset arrangements for you so all you have to do is train and show up to hike.  Active tries to give you a nice mix to get a real feel for the different areas.

If you work with a self-guided tour company like One Foot Abroad , where you will be hiking on your own without a guide, they can make lodging arrangements tailored to your budget.

Working with a tour company that knows the trail in and out can save you a ton of time and hassle  versus trying to make arrangements on your own.  They know the cool places and which ones to avoid.

Food along the Mont Blanc Circuit

‘When in Rome’…scratch that!  I mean France!  Linda explains about the tradition of  drinking a special coffee   with sugar, orange and lemon (often with Grand Marnier liquor) out of this   unusual container  called a  Friendship Cup.     Coupe de l’amitié   is the name of this unusual handcrafted cup used in the Aosta valley on the Italian/French border .   Your group MUST finish the cup, while toasting good health and happiness (or it’s bad luck!).  No complaints there!

The first person says this while passing the cup :  “Le café valdotain dans la coupe de l’amitié “  [According to Google Translate: The Valdotain coffee in the cup of friendship.”]

The person receiving the cup responds,  “Santé bonheur!  “Que grand bien te fasse”  [Great health and happiness to you!].  And the cup continues to be passed around to ALL guests at the table counterclockwise until emptied.  The cup cannot rest on the table until it is finished to avoid “bad luck”.

This  handcrafted cup  is usually made from walnut or maple (I know:  I thought it was clay!) and the round top is often embellished with common  alpine symbols  such as ibex heads, snakes or edelweiss flowers.

trek travel ride across italy

“Santé bonheur!  “Que grand bien te fasse”

[Great health and happiness to you!]

Here’s how I would train to hike the Mont Blanc circuit:

Ideally  at least three months in advance  (but really make sure that it’s at least two months), start taking walks or hikes  with your pack   two times per week for 30-60 minutes,   and then on one day each week, hike 2-3 hours  with your pack.  If you live where it’s flat like I do, you may need to do the short hikes on a treadmill on the incline and then find some hills for your longer hikes (or do more boring treadmills).

Get more details on TRAINING for Adventure Travel HERE .

In addition, your body,  especially your shoulders and feet , need to get used to carrying weight.  BUT DON’T ADD A LOT OF WEIGHT AT ONE TIME!!!   Ease into it.    Collect water bottles (I prefer the thicker walled juice containers with heavy caps because they are less likely to leak).  Fill the bottles with water.

I use a heavy duty trash compacter bag as a liner in my pack.  Put several of the filled water bottles to add some weight to your pack.  You may need to cushion them with a towel so they don’t poke you in the back.

Put the pack on and load with enough water bottles so that you FEEL the weight,  but it doesn’t feel very heavy .  This is your start weight.  Then each week add no more than 10% more weight.  The goal is to build up and get used to carrying more weight than you’ll be carrying on the actual adventure so that when you are actually hiking the trail, your pack feels light.  This helps to compensate for not practicing with much elevation.

For example, if I find that my pack is going to weight about 20 pounds  (see my  day pack packing guide ), and I start feeling the weight at 15 pounds, here’s what my training weight might look like:

DO NOT increase your weight more than 10% per week so your body can adapt easier.

Things To Do in Chamonix

Chamonix-Mont Blanc , located near the junction of France, Italy and Switzerland, usually shortened to Chamonix , offers spectacular views of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain.  On the Active Adventure Mont Blanc Tour, you get a ‘free’ day to play in this adventure.

There are tons of things to do in Chamonix, including taking the cable car on  world’s highest vertical ascent to the peak of the Aiguille du Midi at 12,605 feet (3,842 m).  You can also take advantage of the adrenaline activities, like hang gliding or going on a via ferrata .  If you plan to do more than a few things, you can buy a discount pass when you get there. This ski capital turns into adventure town during the summer!

Table of Contents

10 Best Walks in Italy

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Italy’s hiking trails have it all: the Amalfi Coast’s cliff-hanging routes, Dolomite’s enormous granite rocks, and even volcanoes in Sicily.

Listed below are 10 of the best walks of Italy, as well as tips on how to tackle each route.

1. Alta Via Dei Monzoni

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Dolomites of Trentino Distance : 13 km. / 8 miles Duration : 5 hours Difficulty : Moderate

There’s no better way to begin a Dolomite trek than by taking a chairlift to the starting point — Seggiovia Costabella, located in Pass San Pellegrino.

Hiking along World War I’s former Italian and Austrian trenches is a pleasant, albeit challenging experience from there. The Cimon del Bocche massif, Lagorai, Latemar, Catinaccio, and Pale di San Martino peaks can all be seen from Alta Via, said to be one of the best trails for hiking in Italy.

Only accessible in the late spring and summer, you’ll need to be prepared for this challenging walk. Don’t forget to bundle up and bring your hiking boots if you plan on going on this adventure.

Along the way, you can stop for a meal at one of the rifugi , or shelters in the Dolomite Mountains that offer food and accommodation.

2. Cinque Terre

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : 112 miles northwest of Florence Distance : 32.5 km. / 20.2 miles of trails between the villages Duration : 5 to 6 hours Difficulty : Intermediate to difficult

Known as one of Europe’s best hikes, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cinque Terre is also considered one of Italy’s best.

Located on the Italian Riviera’s rough Ligurian shore, the route covers five villages that make up the Cinque Terre National Park: Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Monterosso, Vernazza, and Manarola.

A series of trekking trails that are inaccessible by car connect the communities, which are perched on cliffs. This area hasn’t been overdeveloped and boasts beautiful hiking paths.

You’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the coast and the city’s vibrant architecture if you take this scenic stroll. You’ll go past vineyards, olive trees, and hillsides.

During your Cinque Terre walk, make sure to stop in the villages to sample local delicacies like fresh fish and pesto.

The majority of the trails in Cinque Terre are paved, but there are also a lot of stairs involved in several of them. Be prepared for a long day of climbing and descending steep slopes.

You can also hire a local guide for a full day of hiking.

3. Corno Grande

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Main car park at Campo Imperatore Distance : 9 km. / 5.6 miles Duration : 5 to 7 hours Difficulty : Moderate (normal route) to demanding (direct route)

Italy’s tallest peak, Corno Grande (Big Horn), is located in the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga in the Abruzzo region, one of Italy’s largest national parks.

Consider using the “regular route” since it is a relatively easy ascent up moraine-strewn slopes to the summit and involves only a few short sections of easy scrambling at the end.

The summit offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea, Europe’s southernmost glacier, the Calderone, as well as the undulating mountains and the Adriatic.

Experienced hikers have the option of taking the zigzag route directly to the summit, which is a far more difficult climb. It’s possible to see a chamois or a royal eagle flying overhead in the early morning or late afternoon silence.

Early spring or early fall is the best time to tackle this trek.

4. Gorropu Gorge

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Dorgali, about 15 km. from the starting point — Rifugio Gorropu parking lot Distance : 14 km. / 8.7 miles Duration : An average of 6 hours Difficulty : Moderate

Su Gorropu is a 450-m. canyon and one of Europe’s deepest gorges. Add the breathtaking views and it’s a must-see on any Italy itinerary.

Gorropu Gorge begins in Sardinia’s wooded mountains. You can hike or take a jeep from Gorropu Gorge base camp to reach there. Bar Silana is the ideal trailhead. You’ll see the mountains and rocks of Sardinia and wander among trees that transport you to a forest.

You can pick how far into Gorropu Gorge to hike when you arrive. Deeper into the trail, you’ll have to climb over rocks. A 1,640-foot trek into the gorge is enough to see the canyon walls.

After Gorropu Gorge, return to Bar Silana. The challenging track is well-maintained and well-marked, making it easy to hike.

Gorropu Gorge is best hiked early in the spring.

5. Mount Vesuvius

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Vesuvio National Park Distance : 1.6 km. / 1 mile with 850 ft. elevation Duration : Average of 35 mins. Difficulty : Easy

Mount Vesuvius, a somma-stratovolcano east of Naples in Campania, was responsible for the destruction of Pompeii and adjacent settlements in AD 79.

Since 3 million people live inside its eruptive zone, it has maintained a reputation as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Despite this, many tourists visiting Italy choose to climb Mount Vesuvius.

Pay a fee to enter Vesuvio National Park’s parking area before ascending. There are stunning views of the Gulf of Naples, as well as the national park and the adjacent cities of Pompei and Naples, during this 35-minute climb.

In addition to the breathtaking views, Monte Vesuvius is a must-do hike in Italy because of its rich history.

6. Path of the Gods

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Located close to Positano Distance : 7.8 km. / 4.8 miles Duration : 3 to 5 hours Difficulty : Easy

The Path of the Gods is one of Italy’s top walks. This is a walk that will take your breath away!

The starting point is at Bomerano, where the buses from Amalfi stop. You can then follow the white/red “02” signs. There are wonderful vistas of the Amalfi Coast to be seen along this journey until you get to Nocelle, your last stop.

Positano, a stunning seaside village, is just a short stroll down some steps from this vantage point. When you visit Positano, don’t miss out on all the fantastic photo ops and the best restaurants for their fantastic food!

You can stay in Positano, but you can also catch a bus back to Amalfi from there.

7. Portofino to San Fruttuoso

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Portofino can be reached only by one road from Rapallo, which is about 5 miles (8.4 km.) away Distance : 5km. / 3 miles Duration : About 2 hours Difficulty : Easy with some altitude changes

The Rapallo to Portofino walk is ideal because it’s one-way and is accessible via Santa Margherita Ligure.

Taking a boat from San Fruttuoso to Rapallo or Portofino, meanwhile, is the way to go for the return trip as it offers different yet equally stunning views from the water.

From Portofino’s boat port, climb steep stairs for one of Italy’s best treks. The road climbs past wildflower meadows, lemon gardens, and olive groves. The trail flattens out, and most of it is a delightful stroll along the Mediterranean Sea cliffs.

After leaving the final Mediterranean vista, the trail descends steep switchbacks to San Fruttuoso Bay. lt is accessible only on foot or by boat. You may see the 10th-century abbey before reaching San Fruttuoso’s beach. You can sunbathe on the beach and eat at local restaurants before returning by boat.

8. Sassolungo / Langkofel

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Start the hike from the cable car in the center of Selva Val Gardena town Distance : 17.6 km. / 11 miles Duration : 3 hours Difficulty : Intermediate

The lush green meadows of the Sassolungo / Langkofel path are punctuated by three towering summits of grey rock.

Climbing one of Italy’s most appealing summits begins on these peaks. They are Sasso Piatto, Punta Grohman, and the Sassolungo itself, and they serve as cinematic companions during the voyage around Sassolungo / Langkofel massif.

Throughout the trip, the ever-changing scenery is awe-inspiring. You’ll be surrounded by European Alpine meadow Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s highest major alpine meadow, and aromatic pine trees drenched in light, as well as the rocky and barren peaks of the Dolomite ranges.

You may refuel, rest, and take in the stunning mountain views at numerous strategically situated rifugi along the way. Sassolungo to Langkofel is a challenging journey because of its length. But hikers of all fitness levels of fitness can complete it because there are no tough sections.

9. Stromboli, Aeolian Islands, Sicily

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : Stromboli town length (7.8 km. / 4.8 miles) Duration : 5 to 6 hours to complete Difficulty : Moderate to demanding

One of the most remarkable islands in the Aeolian archipelago, Stromboli, was formed about 40,000 years ago.

With a view of the cobalt sea, the trek to Stromboli’s stunning pyramid of a volcano is a must-experience. Besides, it’s not every day that you get to climb up to a smoldering volcano.

You will find wild capers and Sicily broom-bordered paths on your way to Stromboli. Plus, the views of the town and the sea are as spectacular as the countryside at higher altitudes. It’s a beautiful sight at sunset, but you’ll need a flashlight to get back down the mountain to the village below.

As a general rule, visitors are only allowed to walk up to 400 meters before needing a guide to ascend farther. It’s also worth noting that this is an active volcano, with a recent eruption in July 2019, thus this hike, while beautiful, comes with an additional level of danger.

10. Tre Cime di Lavaredo Loop

10 Best Walks in Italy To Trek and Hike

Location : 32 km. (20 miles) from Cortina Distance : 10 km. / 6 miles Duration : An average of 3 hrs. and 11 mins. to complete Difficulty : Easy

If you’re going to hike Tre Cime di Lavaredo, get there as early as possible to avoid the crowds. You’ll start at Cortina d’Ampezzo or Misurina, which are both accessible by vehicle or public transportation in high season. It costs 30 euros to arrive by car, but there are no additional fees for parking or anything else.

It doesn’t matter where you start or where you end up on the Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike; the views are breathtaking. In addition to the rocky barren landscapes and mountain lakes surrounded by wildflowers, this is one of the best treks in Italy you can experience.

Along the trip, you’ll pass a few mountain cabins where you can stop for refreshments and eat local fare.

HIKING TOURS IN ITALY

Italy represents the magnum opus of trekking destinations. whether you are traveling through the alpine summits of northern italy, or enjoying coastal walking in the tyrrhenian sea, you will notice the consistent italian commitment to quality..

Commitment to a delicious variety of food, to excellent accommodation – even in the most remote huts in the Alps, and finally a commitment to maintaining one of the world’s largest and most scenic trail systems .

Ryder-Walker offers tours in three major regions of Italy. The Italian Dolomites, our island tours on the Tyrrhenian Island of Capri and the Aeolian islands surrounding Sicily, and finally in the heart of the Italian Alps along the border with Switzerland – where the Mont Blanc and Matterhorn sit proudly.

Italy offers the absolute best in terms of mountain accommodation, set in a breathtaking landscape.Nowhere on earth has a more committed hospitality industry with the Italian Alpine hotels representing some of the absolute best in the world, regardless of whether they are trailside inns or world-class hotels.

Culturally the Italian Dolomites are a unique setting, home to the Ladin culture – a language and lifestyle that harkens back to the Roman empire. The Dolomites also drip with history, with the rugged ridgelines along the Austrian border still bristling with ruined encampments and vertigo-inducing military trails called Via Ferrata, or iron pathways. Ryder-Walker offers three distinct guided tours through the Dolomites. The Via Ladinia takes you through the Ladin heart of the Dolomites, visiting some of the region’s most remote and serene villages. The Dolomiti di Brenta trek explores the unique Brenta Dolomites, an isolated limestone group, home to the famous Via delle Bochette – one of the world’s most impressive Via Ferrata. Finally, our Italian Dolomites Trek is perhaps Ryder-Walker’s most classic offering, visiting only the most tried and true locations in Italy. For our self-guided clients we offer the Italian Dolomites Trek , the Dolomiti di Brenta , the Via Ladinia: Heart of the Italian Dolomites , as well as the Ambiance Italian Dolomites and Via Ladinia Pastorale which are our gentler variations on the the self-guided Italian Dolomites Trek. Finally, the Italian Dolomites Rifugio Trek is a fresh take on the region that spends extra nights high in the mountains in Italy’s magnificent Rifugio system.

The islands of Italy have no shortage of fame, and all of it deserved. While the Italian coast may be known for its elegant reputation and stylish living, it also offers some of the most relaxed and scenic hiking in the world . In Capri, Ryder-Walker’s self guided Isola di Capri trek explores the island known as the Jewel of the Tyrrhenian. Home to the Azure Grotto, the Villa Jovis which belonged to Emperor Tiberius, and the village of Anacapri situated atop the island’s precipitous summit. Back on the Napol coast self guided clients can explore the colorful Cinque Terre .   The Sicily Aeolian Islands trek, which we offer self guided as well, is a true island-hopping experience, which explores the volcanic archipelago that runs towards the sea from Sicily. If you’re looking for warm water and fresh fish cooked in a traditional Italian style, these trips should be at the top of your list.

The Alps along Italy’s Northwestern border are the most impressive mountains in Western Europe. Giants like the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) rise up with awe-inspiring relief, and from a much quieter and more forgotten angle than the villages below the same mountains in Switzerland and France . Ryder-Walker’s Tour du Mont Blanc and shorter self guided TMB Vitesse visits all three countries, circumnavigating the truly gigantic Mont Blanc massif. On this world-famous adventure, you will explore legendary mountain towns such as Courmayeur and Chamonix, as well as tackle some of the highest passes in the Alps. The Matterhorn Trek explores both the Italian and Swiss sides of the Matterhorn, visiting Zermatt while contrasting it with the truly sleepy and mysterious mountain towns on the Italian side of the mountain. While you may be visiting to see the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa might steal the show with its gargantuan glaciated face towering over the Italian valleys below.

Finally, we offer a couple of new self guided outings: our Italian Lakes District: Como & Bellagio trek explores the hills above the lively and lavish Italian Lakes District. Our Tuscany: A Path Through History hike explores the pastoral landscape and medieval villages surrounding the historic city of Florence.

Trek Travel, a leader in cycling tours for more than two decades, has announced that it will offer new Hiking and Walking Tours as of the fall of 2024. Long established as one of the best biking tour companies in the world and lauded for creating memorable cycling vacations, Trek Travel is a subsidiary of Trek Bicycle Corporation, which has been around since the mid-1970s.

This style of travel seems like a logical extension of Trek Travel's expertise in cycling tours, which include everything from self-guided tours to Tour de France tours. The company plans to move seriously into hiking and walking, offering customers a new way to see the world with Trek Travel.

“For the past 20 years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to perfecting your cycling vacations of a lifetime,” Tania Burke, president of Trek Travel, stated in a press release. “We’re bringing that same magic, expertise, hospitality, and commitment to our new adventure hiking and walking tours. As we step into this new journey, you can have confidence in our continued focus on providing a vacation of a lifetime, no matter how you travel with us.”

Trek Travel’s inaugural launch with hiking and walking trips features four classic and in-demand destinations. There are already plans to unveil and roll out additional itineraries later in 2024. Trek promises that each of these trips will have the same level of exceptional guides, luxury accommodations, expertly curated itineraries, unmatched flexibility, and deep-rooted local connections that their bike trips currently offer. All the new trips are planned for five nights and six days.

The four new hikes and walks include the Cinque Terre Hiking and Walking Tour . This is a chance to explore Italy’s remarkable Ligurian Coast, from Portovenere through the five villages known as Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Santa Margherita. Exceptional gourmet meals and luxurious boutique hotel stays are promised. Accommodations are at a luxury level, including Hotel Portonovere, Hotel Metropole, and Hotel Continental. Rated level 3 (out of 5), in terms of difficulty, it’s priced from $5399 (per person, based on double occupancy, land-only, as are all prices mentioned here).

About Italy

Italy is a land rich in various natural landscapes, from glimmering lakes and seas to rugged mountains and wide expanses of farmland. Horseback riding in Italy is the perfect way to discover the country. Basked in wine and romance and sun, it is easy to be seduced by Italy’s ancient and medieval history, cuisine, culture, and atmosphere. Horseback riding allows visitors the opportunity to soak up the unspoiled countryside and enjoy the relaxed, sophisticated Italian lifestyle.

Italian Horses, and History

Italians have paved the way for equestrian evolution since ancient times. In the Roman era, horses were used to transport goods and people, and were used for chariot racing. People even used them in Rome before the city was founded over 2770 years ago.

In the ruins of Pompeii, the grooves of wagon wheels in the cobble-stone roads are visible today, evidence of the daily use of these mighty animals. It is no wonder the deeply rooted relationship with horses still stands today.

Horse Tours Club

Horse Tours Club offers multi-day horseback riding tours in Italy from verified organizers. Visitors can choose from the regions of Tuscany, Sicily, and other regions.

Quiet and still, the Tuscan countryside is famed for its extensive farmland, abandoned medieval castles, wine, and culinary delights. Our horse riding tours take riders through the Tuscan region of Maremma. This is one of the least populated areas of Italy, but the most famous for horses, making it ideal for riding trails.

The Maremma region is 700 meters above sea level, allowing the right temperate and slight breeze, which is perfect for riding. It’s an ideal location even in summer when other parts of the country are far hotter. With options for the length of tours, our trails will take guests through meadows and woodland, and you will experience Romanesque ruins, medieval castles and villages, and farms.

We also offer tours out of the Castle of Santa Cristina, which is nestled between Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany, north of Lake Bolsena. Other tours we offer take riders through the Chianti hills, and the Arno valley.

Our Tuscan riding tours cater to all skill levels, and our flexible trail options are the perfect way to get a taste of Tuscany during your travels in Europe.

The island of Sicily, known as the eternal crossroads of the Mediterranean, has drawn passers-by and explorers for thousands of years. Known for its picturesque beaches, charming villages, and diverse landscapes of mountains and forests, it is a stunning location for horseback riding.

Our range of Sicily horse riding tours offer choice to riders of various levels and interests.

One tour option is a trek across the Northeast of Sicily, through four parks of Madonie, Nebrodi, Etna and Alcantara. Ride through forests, ancient paths, high mountain pastures, olive groves, and vineyards. We stay in an 18th century farmhouse.

Another tour option takes us from the north to south coast of Sicily, with rolling hills, endless wheat fields, and villages teeming with history and legend, and abandoned farms brimming with stories from not long ago.

Another trail takes riders up into the High Madonie mountains. An enchanting trip of varied landscapes, rugged mountains, unique flora and fauna and a variety of altitudes.

We also offer a tour that takes riders through the bridle tracks of the Tardara wood, across the town of Tusa, and up to the Pizza San Pietro. The trail ends by crossing the river of Pollina and the Celsito wood full of archaic olive trees.

With so many options to choose from, you will delight in this once in a lifetime experience to discover and indulge in the island of Sicily full of cultural and natural treasures.

Our horse-riding tours in the destinations throughout Italy offer an authentic experience into the true essence of Italian culture and style. They offer splendid views, sights, and locations in a relaxed, secluded way that only horseback can achieve.

Our verified organizers provide a range of tours to suit beginners and more advanced riders. We also have flexible dates and trail lengths to suit your vacation itinerary or weekend away. With local guides, stellar safety, service, and accommodation, our horse trips are more than comfortable for such a thrilling adventure.

Ride the path of history through olive groves, savor the flavor and freshness of locally grown produce, and meet locals with centuries of stories and traditions. Aren’t these fundamental aspects of travel and holidays?

The climate of Italy is varied and depends on the region. In general, three main climatic zones can be distinguished in the country: Mediterranean, continental and mountainous.

The Mediterranean climate extends to coastal regions such as Sardinia, Sicily, Lazio, and Tuscany.  It brings mild winters with an approximate temperature of 10 to 15 degrees Celsius and hot summers with temperatures above 30 degrees. In the south of Italy, summer can also be quite hot and dry. In spring and autumn the weather is changeable, rains are frequent.

A continental climate is present in the northern regions of Italy, including Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Piedmont. Winters are cold, with temperatures often below freezing, and summers can be quite hot. Spring and autumn are cool, with occasional showers.

The mountain climate is typical for regions in the Alps and the Apennines, where winters are cold and snowy, and summers are cool and rainy.

In Italy, you can expect changeable weather depending on the time of year and the specific region.
