Have the Time of Your Life Reliving 'Dirty Dancing'

Escape to magical spots in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock to see where it all began for Johnny and Baby.

Who can forget the watermelon scene, the sultry dance moves, the coming-of-age love story, the lake lift and, of course, the pivotal final dance when no one put Baby in the corner? Though Dirty Dancing was set in a fictional Catskills resort in the summer of 1963, today, it’s easy to spend a few days exploring some of the original film sites of one of the most endearing love stories to film in North Carolina.

Day 1: 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa

Start your walk down Dirty Dancing memory lane in the town of Lake Lure , where a handful of scenes were filmed. Check in to the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa , where Patrick Swayze, portraying bad-boy dance instructor Johnny Castle, and Jennifer Grey, the beloved Frances “Baby” Houseman, stayed during filming. Settle into Johnny’s Cabin or Baby’s Bungalow, both spacious Dirty Dancing -themed cabins.

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

Although none of the film was shot at the Inn, the landscape at nearby Camp Chimney Rock – including its original cabins, dining hall and gymnasium – were used in the film. The cabins doubled for the film’s Kellerman’s staff housing, and the gym was converted into the banquet room where Baby and Johnny performed their epic “Time of My Life” dance routine. Today, the property is a private residential development called Firefly Cove at Lake Lure, where a few remaining ruins of the camp have been incorporated into the planned community.

Grab dinner at the Inn at Veranda Restaurant , where you can enjoy an elegant meal with mountain views.

Day 2: Chimney Rock State Park and Esmeralda Inn

Head a couple of miles west to Chimney Rock State Park and make your way to the top of the 535-million-year-old 315-foot rock outcropping. For the adventurous and bold types, take the nearly 500 steps on the Outcroppings Trail to the top. For those looking for a more leisurely ascent, check to see if the state-of-the-art elevator is running, and then climb the final steps to take in the spectacular views from the top of this peak. If you time it right, enjoy a magical sunset – and channel Johnny and Baby’s mountain romance – along the Blue Ridge Mountains.

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

Just a bit farther west is The Esmeralda Inn, Restaurant & Spa , where you can walk on the actual floor where Baby and Johnny showed off their legendary dance and lift at the end of the film. Although not originally at this location, the floor was salvaged after the gymnasium where the scene was shot was demolished in the late 1980s; it became part of the lobby floor in the Esmeralda Inn during a renovation in the late '90s. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner in the Esmeralda Restaurant , which takes pride in using local meats and vegetables as often as possible and features an exceptional wine list. (Please note: The Esmeralda is closed for renovations through 2023.)

Day 3: Lake Lure Tours and Bald Mountain Golf

Spend the morning enjoying the charm of the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa. Admire the antiques and artwork of the historic inn, stroll the property and lakeside, or treat yourself to a massage or facial in the Irongate Spa . Wander over to the marina and book a guided Dirty Dancing tour with Lake Lure Tours , where you'll board an open-air pontoon boat for a narrated tour of the lake. Sail past the stairs where Baby carried the watermelon up to the staff cabins and where she practiced her dance moves coming down. See the area of the original camp that served as the staff housing and banquet room in Firefly Cove at Lake Lure. Learn about the history of the area, along with the natural and cultural background of Hickory Nut Gorge.

Come afternoon, take the longer but more scenic route along the lake to Bald Mountain Golf Course , an 18-hole course at Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure . Designed by W.B. Lewis in 1968, the course was featured prominently when Baby interrupted her parents while they were practicing their swings to ask her father for money. The film was shot on the 16th hole, but it was made to look like a practice green.

Bonus Day: Lake Lure Dance Festival

If you plan your visit in mid-September, you can take advantage of a Dirty Dancing highlight: the  Lake Lure Dance Festival , which is celebrating its first iteration in 2023 . The Dirty Dancing Festival was originally founded in 2010, a year after Patrick Swayze’s premature death and 23 years after the film debut, but it's since evolved into a larger celebration of all things dance throughout the years.

If you still want more Dirty Dancing in your life, head southwest to Hendersonville and Cashiers  (both towns served as backdrops for the 2017 musical reimagination of the film)  and book a stay at the newly  remodeled High Hampton ; it stood in for this version's Kellerman's Resort.

(Extreme Bill Medley Voice) Now I've... had...

Lake lure is great unless you're trying to find the places where they shot dirty dancing..

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

My family and I just got back from a vacation at Lake Lure. Before, we were beach people. Now we’re lake people. Just to confirm, I fact-checked this with my 7-year-old son:

ME: What do you like better, our house or this lake house? HIM: Our house. ME: What if you could bring your Legos here? HIM: LAKE HOUSE.

To be fair, he’d prefer the basement of a Siberian prison if there were Legos in it.

Specifically, though, we’re Lake Lure people. For one thing, the back balcony of our rental house pointed toward Chimney Rock, so it looked like a less foreboding version of this at all times:

lake lure looking toward chimney rock

I would have taken a nice sunset picture, but I left my phone in my bedroom for long chunks of time because there was no cell service. Just like the old days! This wasn’t quite the bliss that it seems to be. Our house had decent WiFi, so we could plausibly claim how great it was to be out of reach of telemarketing calls while simultaneously doomscrolling for a good, senseless hour.

Let’s see, what else? We rented a pontoon boat for two days, which allowed us to reach a tree with a rope swing on it that my 70-year-old father-in-law used to launch himself into the water. I went golfing and lost a half-dozen balls. I jogged to the top of Buzzards Roost, which is a lung-shredding 300-foot climb from the water. On the last day, we had lunch in Chimney Rock Village and walked across the flowering bridge , which is exactly what it sounds like.

lake lure flowering bridge

But mostly we just hung around, floated in the water, played games, talked, and so on. There was barely an agenda. We ate. Futzed around. The kids splashed. It was great.

Except for the Dirty Dancing part.

Perhaps you have heard of the 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey! It was sort of a big deal. “Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” was a thing that people said. It spawned this song . Stuff like that. I, for one, did not sit through repeated viewings of it as a kid, but it’s been on TV enough during my 41 years of life that I know what it’s about and that the lift thing is important. Also, there’s this:

It is a very big deal here that parts of this movie, which, again, is 34 years old at this point, were filmed here. (Before you yell, yes, The Last of the Mohicans was shot nearby as well.) There are Dirty Dancing boat tours of Lake Lure, as well as an annual festival dedicated to the movie. People come here to recreate the lake lift. With varying degrees of success and accuracy.

There’s just one problem: The lake lift didn’t happen there!

Twitter avatar for @TennBoymom

Half of the movie was shot up in Virginia, and the other half was shot at Lake Lure. But, as you may have already noticed, the lake in Virginia just went and DRIED UP. If you’re wondering where the water went, don’t ask scientists, because they don’t really know either . The good news: It is starting to fill back up a little, but if you want to re-create the lake lift at the actual spot, it is probably going to go like this for you:

This sort of confusion about movie filming locations tends to happen quite a bit. The New York Times talked to Dirty Dancing ’s production designer a few years ago, who confirmed from notes that the lake lift happened in Virginia. But really, and I say this with love, who cares? Earlier this summer, I found myself at the hotel in Colorado where parts of Dumb & Dumber , the most formative movie of my youth, were filmed. I found the place where Jim Carrey looks at an old newspaper headline about the moon landing and excitedly shouts “ We landed on the moon! ” as he walks out of the bar. I took a beaming picture at what I assumed to be exact spot, only to notice later that the newspaper was not actually the same as the one in the movie. Maybe I was in the right place? Maybe not? I didn’t care. I had my moment of joy.

Share North Carolina Rabbit Hole

Either way, though, there’s not much left of the actual Dirty Dancing set on the banks of Lake Lure. The dining hall from the movie was from an abandoned boys’ camp, and it’s long since gone. Some ruins are there, but they’re back in a residential development called Firefly Cove, and it’s blocked by a big fence and a gate. We couldn’t get in. From a boat, you can see the steps where Jennifer Grey practiced her dancing. They’re in someone’s backyard now. If you want to get your Instagram shot, though, you’ll have to make do at the Lake Lure Welcome Center down the road.

dirty dancing steps facsimilie

You laugh, but I’ve seen some pictures taken here , and this works astonishingly well. Which is apt, because when it comes to making real-life pilgrimages to places depicted in cinematic fiction, accuracy is best graded on a curve.

Dirty Dancing on Lake Lure

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

Celebrate the now iconic 1987 film at a festival in the North Carolina mountains this weekend.

lakeatnight

In 2010, Lake Lure decided to celebrate the movie’s legacy with the first Dirty Dancing Festival . With the support of Lionsgate Films, blessing of Eleanor Bergstein, the film’s original writer who based the story on her own summer experiences as a child, and several members of the cast and crew, the inaugural festival drew over 1,000 fans to the lake. Tucked away in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Lake Lure is just 45 minutes from Asheville and an hour and a half from Charlotte.

Kicking off August 17 with a lakeside screening of “Dirty Dancing” this year, the festival continues on Saturday with live bands and dance performances, dance lessons, games, watermelon and the infamous “Lake Lift” competition. After channeling Johnny and Baby with a lift, fans can dance the night away at the official after party. A self-guided tour of locations from the movie, including the original boys camp and Johnny’s cabin, is also available either by foot or boat. A tour of the actual rooms Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze stayed in at Lake Lure Inn & Spa, Rumbling Bald Resort golf course, where Baby asks her dad for money, and Esmeralda Inn, where interior dance scenes were filmed, are also options over the weekend.

Many choices for lodging , either right near the festival grounds or a few minutes away, are available, and Rumbling Bald Resort and The Esmeralda Inn are both open for overnight guests. The opening night lakeside screening is free, but a $5 donation is suggested and will go to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Saturday festival activities are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Order tickets online here .

There’s a mistake in your story. Camp Chimney Rock at Lake Lure was not just a boy’s camp. It was for both boys and girls, ages 8 through 12. I should know as I was a counselor there. I still have the jacket! We had canoeing, gun instruction, archery, swimming lessons and lifeguard lessons, baseball, basketball, soccer, hiking and camping. We camped all over, including the top of Mt. Pisgah. We were a “camping” camp and we taught all the skills you needed to live outdoors. I was the one who always chopped down the dead trees for firewood and I always lit the fires and taught them all how to do it. I tried to get Ms. Rankin, the manager, to get me a hunting license so I could teach the kids to hunt and field dress but she wouldn’t let me. A big group of us hiked down Mt. Mitchel when we camped at the base. Across the lake from the camp was a bunch of night clubs, including some teen clubs. More than once some of us counselors rowed across the lake when the camp manager had gone to bed. We’d dance all night and come back exhausted but we had to make it to flag raising at dawn. That was the hardest thing I did there! It was a fantastic camp: right on the lake with great cabins, a wonderful dining hall with great food, a gym, a huge natural rock-lined pool with FREEZING water! Those were wonderful days for me. I taught canoeing, archery, shooting and gun safety, swimming, and I was a life guard. Plus having a cabin of girls. Busiest times of my life but I LOVED it!

I attended camp at Camp Chimney Rock too, as a camper and CIT! In 1979 and 1980. I always wondered after having seen the movie if Dirty Dancing was filmed there… but this post makes it clear. I remember Mrs Rankin like it was yesterday. I wish they hadn’t let it get passed on for other purposes. It was a great camp and a great experience. June

A Brief History of Lake Lure: The idea of this resort community in western North Carolina was the vision of Dr. Lucius B. Morse. Soliciting the financial backing of his brothers, Dr. Morse purchased 400 acres around Chimney Rock in 1902 to create Chimney Rock Park. Additional acreage was acquired over the next several years to bring the total to 8,000 acres. Dr. Morse conceived the idea of building a dam on the Rocky Broad River to create a lake and a year-round resort. The dam was completed in September 1926, forming the lake which was named Lake Lure by Dr. Morse’s wife, Elizabeth Parkenson. The Town of Lake Lure was incorporated in 1927.

Having the “time of your life” at the Dirty Dancing Festival in Lake Lure, N.C.

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

Shout out to all Dirty Dancing film fans: Mark Your Calendars now for the August 18-19th Dirty Dancing Festival held in Lake Lure, North Carolina. If you’re thinking, “But wait, aren’t we in September now?” you’d be right. However, I’m giving you advance notice for 2018 because you’re not the only one who’s down for “having the time of your life”. There are well over 1,000 other fans who want to relive Dirty Dancing alfresco on the big screen, humming, singing or dancing along to the timeless songs.

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

Plus, the best rooms fill fast so if you’re thinking of booking the exact rooms where Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey stayed (psst-they roomed at the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa) while shooting the film, a mind-blowing 30 years ago, you’d better act fast!

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

The crazy fun weekend also includes live bands, dance performances, sing-alongs, watermelon games, D.D. dance lessons where you can learn all the moves, from Lisa’s iconic hula dance to The Shag, taught by professional dancers imported from the Asheville Ballet.

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

If you try really hard you might even be picked for the Kellerman’s Talent Show! Don’t worry about people laughing at you (the crowd is super supportive) because most the laughter comes when watching the infamous (and hysterically funny) “Lake Lift” competition.

The final shebang is the After Party, where, just like in the film, you can get-down with the actual dancers.

D.D. FILM SPOTS TO CHECK OUT

While Lake Lure provided the perfect romantic backdrop for many of Johnny and Baby’s dance scenes there are other Lake Lure film locations you might want to check out. There’s the former Boy’s Scout Camp which was used for the camp counselor’s cabins shots (although the footbridge and the foundations of camp buildings are about all that’s left), the white bridge and stone steps which are now on private property but you can see them while boating on the lake, and the golf course at Rumbling Bald Resort, where baby asked her father for money for Penny’s abortion. Head to the main lobby of the Esmeralda Inn and to see the original dance floor where Johnny and Baby had their final dance.

Pop in to the Rutherford County Welcome Center where you can view an original film cell, photos from the filming locations as well as a great mockup of the staircase Baby practices her dance moves on. Perf for selfies!

THINGS TO DO AFTER THE D.D. FESTIVAL

Lake Lure certainly lives up to its name, luring you in with its peaceful beauty, and relaxed pace. Whether you’re in the mood to just chill out and just contemplate your navel or perhaps you’d rather hike, bike, paddle, or row your way around Lake Lure here are a few activities to get you started.

1. Hike Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park

Choose an easy walk to the Hickory Nut 400 ft. waterfall or take the challenge and climb the 499 steps to the top of Chimney Rock, where you’ll be rewarded with a 75-mile panoramic view taking in the unbridled beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s easy to understand why Chimney Rock State Park was one of the filming locations for the movie “Last of the Mohicans”

Inside Tip: Adrenalin junkies can sign up with the certified instructors at Fox Mountain Guides for rock climbing adventures for beginners to advanced climbers.

Afterwards, celebrate your climb, head down to the village for a well-deserved drink on the deck of the Riverwatch Waterfront Bar & Grill that overlooks the Rocky Broad Riverwalk and Chimney Rock. It’s so close you can wave to the climbers.

There’s no shortage of souvenir shops in Chimney Rock Village main drag — but bar far the best one is Bubba O’Leary’s General Store.

2. If you’d rather stick to a slow stroll, head to the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge.

Once a bustling thoroughfare, this historic bridge was repurposed into a gorgeous pedestrian walkway, only the second of its kind in the U.S. The walkway is made up of a mind-boggling, 700 different plants and flowers, all arranged in a crazy quilt of twelve themed mini -gardens, including a sensory garden for the visually impaired. The most amazing part is that this dilapidated old bridge was due to be torn down until a dedicated bunch of volunteers spent over two years of their lives collecting donations to turn it into the flowering work of art it is today.

If you see a volunteer weeding, ask them to point out some of the unique growies such as the amazing Peanut Butter Tree (smells just like it), the hard-to-find, green roses (hint- look in the rose garden) or Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick, a cartoonish twisted shrub found in their charming, whimsical garden.

3. Head the call of Lake Lure and take one of the hourly pontoon boat tours where you’ll learn more about the cultural history of the area.

For something a bit more strenuous they also rent out canoes, paddleboards and kayaks, or you can charter a fishing boat.

4. Horse lovers will be in horsey heaven at the new Tryon International Equestrian Center located about 20 miles away in Mill Spring.

In 2014 this was just a pile of dirt and rocks, but a few short years later it is now one of the premier Equestrian Lifestyle facilities in the world, created by one man’s vision (Boston developer Mark Bellissimo) and approximately $175 million. It will be the home to the 2018 The FEI World Equestrian Games™ (FEI WEG), which is THE major international championship event (think Olympics for Horses) for the eight core equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage and para-equestrian dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting and reining.

Admission and parking at the center is complimentary which offers live music, free Venetian Carousel rides, and a wide selection of dining and shopping choices. Their calendar is filled with eclectic events ranging from equestrian competitions or non-four-legged events like outdoor movie night, trivia and themed evenings.

One of the most popular events is Gladiator Polo, a sport that was invented by Bellissimo. The inaugural Gladiator Polo game, presented by Coca-Cola on June 24, 2017, was filled to capacity with over 10,000 cheering spectators. He believes that this action-packed sport, which he describes as “hockey on horseback” will appeal to football, wrestling, and hockey fans worldwide so next year he will be bringing it to Rome, Paris and China.

At the moment you can stay on-site at the 150-room hotel or opt for one of the modern log cabins, although Bellissimo is busily working on a handful of new hotels due to open before the 2018 Games.

Where to Stay:

The 125 year old, Esmeralda Inn, once served as a stop on the Stage Coach route. The newish innkeepers, a lovely couple who have years of experience in the hospitality industry, feel in love with the area and decided that running the rustic, cozy 14-room Esmeralda Inn and Restaurant was exactly what they wanted to do.   They spruced up the property and now the rooms offer sumptuous Anichini linens and bathrobes; quality spa toiletries, extraordinarily comfortable beds, 32″ high definition flat panel televisions, Bose Wave music systems, wireless internet access, fireplaces, hot tubs, an outdoor pool, a full breakfast to start you day off right. They even offer hot cookies!

Nab a rocking chair and Order a glass of wine from their well-curated list as you take in the views of Chimney Rock from a rocking chair on the porch or while soaking in the outdoor Jacuzzi.

Feast on the scrumptious Southern-with-a-twist fare served in the wood timbered dining room or out on the patio. I opted to “go native” by starting with artisan local cheeses and creative shrimp & grits spring rolls followed by a panko-crusted, fresh Lake trout.

For a fun experience, reserve The Chef’s Table in the kitchen, where you’ll be able to watch Chef Keith Chinn whip up your meal!

Another oldie but ever so goodie choice is The 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa – where “Modern Comfort Meets Historic Charm”.

This landmark, lakefront property has a gorgeous lobby filled with antiques including a stunning Baccarat Crystal chandelier from the 1870’s and 25 restored music boxes. Join the ranks of past guests such as F. Scoot Fitzgerald and Franklin Roosevelt and of course, rooms where Swayze and Grey.

Indulge in deep-tissue massages, body wraps, or a variety of other services before dining in the Veranda Restaurant or the Moose & Goose Lounge. If you’re there on a Sunday don’t miss their festive Sunday Brunch Buffet served in the Grande Lobby.

Italian Eats:

dirty dancing boat tour lake lure

The restaurants at both hotels come highly recommended for a relaxing dinner but if you’re looking for a tasty casual bite, the friendly, family-owned, La Strada at Lake Lure Italian Grill ticks all the right boxes. Patio dining comes with a backdrop of lake and mountain views, perfect for enjoying their surprisingly authentic NY-style brick oven pizza and traditional Italian cuisine. If you’re not on a date go for their famous garlic rolls…if you are, then make sure you both partake. Less smelly but equally yummy is their unique Sweet Potato Fries served with a Pina Colada Caramel dipping sauce.

This was such a relaxing boat tour of Lake Lure. Our guide told us so many interesting facts about the lake, the homes and the people who live there. A part of the movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed on the lake! Make this tour one of your "things to do" while in this area!

very informative and enjoyable tour about the lake. only down for me is I wish it was longer. Our tour guide was funny and knowledgeable.

We had a beautiful tour of the lake, with a very engaging tour guide. It is a very relaxing and easy way to see the lake and to enjoy the history. It is a one hour tour, but could be a lot longer and still a lot of fun. I understand they do a 3 hour diner time cruise. We may do this the next time we go.

This is regarding the boat tours near the beach and playground, they say the Captains are friendly how come this old Captain with mustache and beard all over his face is isn't? After the tour we asked him if he can take a picture of us"? and he has no reaction I thought he did not hear us, I repeated my friend little favor to him and his just keeps ignoring us and told the tourist all stand up and out of the boat. Introduction

The classic movie ‘Dirty Dancing’ has become a beloved staple of American pop culture since its release in 1987. The story of a young girl’s summer romance, set against the backdrop of a Catskills resort, is one that resonates with audiences all over the world. But what many fans may not know is that the movie was filmed at three different locations—all of which are open to visitors today.

In this article, we’ll explore the iconic locations where the movie was filmed and discover the history behind the filming of ‘Dirty Dancing.’ We’ll also look at what it would be like to visit the real-life Mountain Lake Lodge from the movie, including the amenities and activities available, as well as how to recreate some of the most iconic moments from the movie.

Exploring the Iconic Locations Where ‘Dirty Dancing’ Was Filmed

The three main locations used for the filming of ‘Dirty Dancing’ were Lake Lure, North Carolina; Maggie Valley, North Carolina; and the village of Tannersville, New York. All three locations provided the perfect backdrop for the movie, creating an atmosphere of nostalgia and romance.

Lake Lure and Mountain Lake Lodge

The majority of the film was shot at the Mountain Lake Lodge in Lake Lure, North Carolina. This rustic mountain resort provided the perfect setting for the outdoor scenes, from the lake to the mountains. It was also home to the infamous “Kellerman’s”, the fictitious resort where Baby and her family stayed during the movie.

Maggie Valley, North Carolina

The nearby town of Maggie Valley, North Carolina was used for the scenes set in the fictional town of Kellerman. The area provided a unique mix of small-town charm and stunning scenery, creating the perfect setting for the romantic drama of the movie.

The Village of Tannersville, New York

The third location used in the filming of ‘Dirty Dancing’ was the village of Tannersville, New York. This quaint town provided the perfect backdrop for the scenes set in the city, providing a contrast to the rural setting of the rest of the movie.

Visiting the Real-Life Mountain Lake Lodge from ‘Dirty Dancing’

Today, the Mountain Lake Lodge is still open to visitors, offering a chance to experience the same atmosphere that made the movie so beloved. The lodge has been around since 1895, giving it a rich history and making it the perfect place to relive the magic of ‘Dirty Dancing.’

The lodge offers a range of amenities and activities, including a golf course, spa, and fitness center. There are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as swimming, boating, and fishing. Plus, the resort also hosts special events throughout the year, such as weddings and corporate retreats.

Recreating the Magic of ‘Dirty Dancing’ at the Original Film Locations

Visitors to the original filming locations can also have the chance to recreate some of the most iconic moments from the movie. From the famous lift scene to Baby and Johnny’s romantic dance on the dock, there are plenty of opportunities to recreate the magic of ‘Dirty Dancing.’

For those who want to take their experience to the next level, there are guided tours available that will take you to all of the filming locations from the movie. These tours provide an in-depth look at the places where the movie was filmed, as well as stories and anecdotes from the cast and crew.

The History Behind the Filming of ‘Dirty Dancing’

The idea for ‘Dirty Dancing’ came from screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein, who wanted to tell a story based on her own experiences as a young girl spending summers at resorts in the Catskills. She wrote the screenplay and began looking for potential filming locations, eventually settling on Lake Lure, Maggie Valley, and Tannersville.

Bergstein chose these locations for specific reasons. She felt that the beauty of the area and the sense of nostalgia she felt when visiting would help to create the perfect atmosphere for the movie. And she was right—the locations ended up being integral to the overall feel of the film.

A Look Back at the Picturesque Settings Used in ‘Dirty Dancing’

The locations chosen for ‘Dirty Dancing’ were absolutely breathtaking. From the majestic mountains of North Carolina to the quaint streets of Tannersville, each location added to the romance and nostalgia of the movie. The beautiful scenery was an essential part of the movie’s success and helped to create an atmosphere that audiences could relate to.

The settings of the movie also had an impact on the characters. For example, the secluded location of the Mountain Lake Lodge gave Baby and Johnny a sense of freedom and isolation, which allowed them to connect with each other and fall in love.

Revisiting the Real-Life Locations Where ‘Dirty Dancing’ Was Filmed

Today, the locations used in the filming of ‘Dirty Dancing’ are still just as beautiful as ever. Visitors can explore the area and relive the classic moments from the movie. From the lake to the mountains, the area provides the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway.

The Mountain Lake Lodge is still open to visitors, offering a chance to experience the same atmosphere that made the movie so beloved. Guests can stay in the same rooms used by the cast and crew, or enjoy a variety of activities, from golfing to boating. Plus, there are also guided tours available to help visitors get the most out of their visit.

Taking a Tour of the ‘Dirty Dancing’ Film Sites

For those looking to get the most out of their visit to the ‘Dirty Dancing’ filming locations, there are several tour options available. From guided bus tours to self-guided walking tours, there is something for everyone. These tours provide an in-depth look at the places where the movie was filmed, as well as stories and anecdotes from the cast and crew.

Visitors can also choose to take a guided boat tour of the lake, which offers a unique view of the area and provides a chance to see some of the filming locations from the movie. For those looking for a more immersive experience, there are even themed dinner cruises with live music and dancing.

The movie ‘Dirty Dancing’ is a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences all over the world. Its iconic locations have become almost as well-known as the movie itself, and now visitors can experience the magic of the movie firsthand. From exploring the picturesque settings used in the movie to recreating some of the most iconic moments, there are plenty of ways to experience the real-life locations used in ‘Dirty Dancing.’

Whether you’re looking to relive the classic moments or just take in the breathtaking scenery, visiting the filming locations of ‘Dirty Dancing’ is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
