South Africa Safari - Compare 925 Tours

South Africa is one of the world’s most varied holiday destinations. From the classic safari country of Kruger National Park to the stately ‘mother city’ of Cape Town; from the snow-sprinkled heights of the Drakensberg to the parched red dunescapes of the Kalahari; from the gorgeous Winelands around Stellenbosch to the idyllic beaches of the Garden Route – South Africa is a true all-rounder that attracts more than its fair share of repeat visitors. It is also the most affordable and well equipped of African safari destinations, particularly well suited to family holidays, to those seeking a malaria-free holiday, to dedicated foodies and wine-lovers, and for combining a foray into Big Five country with a beach holiday and/or city break.

8 Questions About South Africa Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

south africa tour from malaysia

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

“There is no bad time to take a South African holiday. But certain parts of the country are far better at specific times of the year. If a safari will be the main event of your South African tour, most of the country’s key parks and reserves are at their best in the southern hemisphere winter months of May to September, when daytime temperatures are cooler, the bush is less dense allowing for better visibility, and wildlife tends to gather around limited water sources. For beach-lovers, by contrast, the main coastal resorts are at their best in the southern hemisphere summer (November to March). Special interest groups such as bird-watchers and photographers may also prefer to undertake a safari in summer, when resident bird populations are boosted by large numbers of migrant birds, and the clear sky and greener countryside make for a more photogenic backdrop.”

Why visit South Africa, what are the major attractions?

“Variety is the keynote of South African holidays. The country boasts one of the continent’s finest safari destinations in the form of Kruger National Park and nearby private reserves, while other key Big Five safari reserves include Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and malaria-free Madikwe and Pilanesberg. Safaris aside, South Africa is renowned for its fantastic beaches, limitless hiking opportunities, wonderful outdoor climate and good-value dining and wining scene. The main focus of non-safari sightseeing is Cape Town, which is gracefully perched below Table Mountain on a scenic stretch of Atlantic coastline, close to the whale-watching hub of Hermanus and the historical Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.”

How much does a South African safari cost?

“South African safari prices will depend greatly on the level of comfort you expect. At one extreme, self-drive camping safaris in somewhere like Kruger might work out at under US$100 for a couple per day. At the other extreme, all-inclusive safari packages at one of the country’s more exclusive private safari lodges might be 10 or 20 times more expensive. A good compromise between comfort and cost is a safari using the well-run rest camps that can be found throughout Kruger and in many other key national parks and provincial reserves. Accommodation aside, extras such as food, wine and other drinks are very cheap by international standards.”

How is the wildlife viewing?

“Excellent. Kruger National Park and neighboring private reserves host large populations of all the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), and rank among the top African safari destinations when it comes to spotting white rhino, as well as the rarer black rhino, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog. All these safari favorites are also likely to be encountered in Madikwe and Pilanesberg Game Reserves, as well as in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and the various small private reserves of the Eastern Cape. Outside of the major Big Five reserves, many parts of the country are still home to a variety of antelope, monkeys and small predators, all of which might be encountered by hikers and ramblers. Bird watching is consistently excellent throughout the country, while locally conspicuous marine wildlife includes penguins, whales and giant turtles.”

How safe is South Africa for tourists?

“Crime is a genuine issue in the larger cities, especially Johannesburg, but not so much in the game reserves, smaller towns and beach resorts that form the focal points of most South African safari trips. Follow local advice about safety, avoid walking around cities at night, and you should be fine. Malaria is absent from most parts of the country, the one major exception being Kruger National Park and its immediate environs, but even here the risk is far lower than in most other African safari destinations. Madikwe and Pilanesberg are Africa’s premier malaria-free safari destinations. Many reserves in South Africa offer guided walking safaris in areas inhabited by potentially dangerous animals such as elephant, black rhino and lion, but the risk of an incident is minimal provided that you listen to your guide at all times, and treat wildlife with respect. Possibly the biggest risk to life and limb in South Africa is a car accident, so self-drivers should adopt a more defensive and cautious approach than they might at home.”

How do I select a reliable tour operator for a South Africa trip?

“It’s worth doing a bit of research into operators before you book a South Africa tour. Look for reviews of any given operator on SafariBookings.com and possibly other online portals; the more reviews an operator has received, the more confident you can be of its reliability. If you have friends who have visited the country, or who live there, ask for word-of-mouth recommendations before booking any South African safari packages. Check out the company’s website too – as a rule its level of professionalism will reflect that of the company it represents. Once in South Africa, hotels and guesthouses can usually point you to tried-and-tested operators for day outings and other short local tours.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“South African safari accommodation ranges from no-frills campsites to exclusive upmarket lodges offering the last word in safari chic. In between these extremes, most national parks and provincial reserves have at least one well-run rest camp offering camping facilities and self-catering chalets (usually en suite but occasionally using shared bathrooms). For those who don’t want to immerse themselves in the bush, a selection of mid-range hotels can be found within easy driving distance of many national park and reserve entrance gates. Exclusive lodges are generally associated with private reserves and concessions that offer all-inclusive safari packages incorporating guided game drives and walks.”

What can I expect from South African safaris?

“Generally South Africa has a more developed feel than other African safari destinations. Most national parks and other reserves can be reached via good, surfaced roads, which certainly isn’t the case in many other parts of Africa. Some, such as Kruger, actually have an internal network of surfaced roads, and it is the only major African safari destination where a 4WD would be a luxury rather than a necessity, and the most suitable one for self-drive safaris. Likewise, most national park rest camps are well equipped for self-caterers, and many have well-stocked grocery shops. Further, the wildlife in South Africa is as wild as it is in most parts of Africa, the standard of guiding is unusually high, and people on organized safaris can expect excellent close-up sightings of everything from the Big Five to smaller animals such as birds and lizards.”

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliche

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn, but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavors and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident, and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travelers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavored with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

south africa tour from malaysia

Malaysia is foreigner-friendly, culturally interesting and blessed with Southeast Asia’s exotic beauty. Visitors can expect white-sand beaches, fine snorkeling and diving opportunities, top-class shopping and dining, and unmissable attractions.

Malaysia Travel Guide

The west coast is home to Kuala Lumpur, which is Malaysia’s glittering, cosmopolitan capital. The city abounds with excellent sights and activities, from the lofty Petronas Towers, to the nearby Batu Caves. Kuala Lumpur is also a world-famous shopping destination and a gastronomic delight for the adventurous palate. East-coast visitors will find several easy-to-reach tropical islands. For it’s part, northern Peninsula Malaysia has many hill resorts, which provide a welcome respite from the heat and humidity of the coasts. Nature-lovers will not want to miss east Malaysia. The tropical island is rich by way of outdoor and water-sport opportunities, all found in the twin states of Sabah and Sarawak. Tourists should certainly visit Kinabalu National Park. It’s renowned biodiversity has led to it being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sipadan Island has what are widely considered the best diving and snorkeling sites in the world.

Best time to visit Malaysia

Malaysia has a humid tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures all year round. The monsoon season (November to February) brings heavy rain to the peninsular region. The best time to visit is between April and October. Travelers should bear in mind that if they’re suffering in the heat at the coast, the highland region in northern Malaysia is significantly cooler.

What to pack

Tourists should pack lightweight clothing, insect repellent and sunscreen. They should also have a small backpack to carry on day excursions, containing a rain-slicker and plenty of water.

What to buy

Traditional fabric known as batik and carved wooden figurines.

Sate (slivers of chicken or beef dipped in a spicy peanut sauce), nasi goreng (fried rice), and nasi lemak (coconut rice served with fried anchovies, peanuts and a curry dish).

A final word

From ancient rainforests in well-managed nature reserves to pristine beaches, and from the glamour of Kuala Lumpur to the gastronomic delights of Pengang, a holiday in Malaysia is sure to be spectacular.

DISTANCE FROM AIRPORT TO CITY CENTRE:  58 kilometres TIME ZONE:  GMT +8 hours CURRENCY:  Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). ATMs are plentiful, with credit cards widely accepted in major establishments LANGUAGES:  Bahasa Malaysia is the official language but English is widely spoken.

Do I need visas for Malaysia?

No visas are required for South African passport holders for a stay of up to 30 days.

Climate & Best time to visit Malaysia

The country has an equatorial climate and 75% of its land is a tropical rainforest making it delightfully warm throughout the year. The monsoon winds do much to disperse the heat. In the hills, the weather is cooler.

Did you know?

Nasi Goreng, the delightfully simple dish served across the country, is the best enjoyed on the island of Penang, where diverse cooking styles give the dish some special flavours.

Kuala Lumpur is reffered locally as KL and Kota Kinabalu as KK.

The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur at 450 metres high are taller than the Kuala Lumpur Tower at 421 metres. The Kuala Lumpur Tower seems higher because it is standing on a hill.

An Emerging Ireland squad will travel to South Africa this Autumn to play three matches against Currie Cup and Super Rugby opposition, providing high potential players with an opportunity to connect with the National Coaching Team and perform under the intensity of the National Team environment.

Following the success of the 2022 Emerging Ireland Tour, Ireland Defence Coach Simon Easterby will once again lead the squad to South Africa, assisted by Ireland Forwards Coach Paul O’Connell , Ireland Scrum Coach John Fogarty and incoming Ireland Backs Coach Andrew Goodman .

The squad will assemble at the IRFU High Performance Centre on 25 September, before departing for Bloemfontein three days later.

Emerging Ireland will face the Pumas in the campaign opener on Wednesday, 2 October, before going head-to-head with Super Rugby outfit Western Force on Sunday, 6 October.

Easterby’s side will then conclude the Tour against defending Currie Cup champions the Cheetahs on Wednesday, 9 October, with all matches being played at Toyota Stadium.

The Tour schedule is designed to challenge the players in a National Team environment, providing them with a window to impress the coaches and train and play to the National Team’s tactical and technical approach.

Two years ago, Jack Crowley , Calvin Nash and Joe McCarthy were among those who made a significant impression for Emerging Ireland as they claimed the Toyota Challenge title courtesy of wins over the Windhoek Draught Griquas, the Pumas and the Cheetahs, with all three part of Andy Farrell ‘s Men’s Guinness Six Nations -winning squad earlier this season.

On today’s announcement, the Ireland Head Coach said: “We are delighted to confirm details of a second Emerging Ireland Tour to South Africa later this year, the value of which cannot be understated. This short three-match window will once again provide an opportunity for players within the system to come into a National Team environment, work with the National Team coaches and access meaningful game time in a green jersey.

“Ahead of a busy four-match Autumn Nations Series in November, it is important we continue to broaden our selection pool and ensure young players are given every opportunity to further develop and gain an understanding of what is required to perform for Ireland at the highest level.”

Emerging Ireland Head Coach, Simon Easterby, added: “The 2022 Tour was of huge value, as evidenced by the cohort of players who have come through and been capped at Test level for Ireland since. It will be a short preparation window leading into three tough matches but that is part of the challenge for the whole group, building connections and getting up to speed to meet the demands of playing in a green jersey.”

Kick off times and broadcast details will be confirmed in due course, while the Emerging Ireland squad for South Africa will be announced in September.

Emerging Ireland Tour, South Africa 2024:

  • Wednesday, 2 October: Emerging Ireland v The Pumas
  • Sunday, 6 October: Emerging Ireland v Western Force
  • Wednesday, 9 October: Emerging Ireland v The Cheetahs.

World Tour: Opposition parties win in South Africa

WORLD Radio - World Tour: Opposition parties win in South Africa

Plus, a deadly heat wave in India, prison gang activity in Guatemala, and recognition of the Tiananmen Square massacre around the world

MYRNA BROWN, HOST: Coming up next on The World and Everything in It : World Tour with our reporter in Africa Onize Ohikere.

AUDIO: [Celebrations]

South African election — We start today in a South African province as opposition parties celebrate their local victory in a historic election, where no party won a clear parliamentary majority.

For the first time in three decades, the ruling African National Congress party lost its majority—emerging with only 40 percent of the votes.

Here’s President Cyril Ramaphosa.

RAMAPHOSA: Our people have spoken, whether we like it or not, they have spoken.

The ANC said it has started negotiations with other major parties.

The Democratic Alliance opposition party came in second while former President Jacob Zuma’s MK party came in third.

Parliament must elect the country’s president in the next two weeks.

AUDIO: [Sound from hospital]

Indian heat wave — Over in India, a scorching heat wave has killed more than 50 people.

Authorities said some 33 people died in the northern Uttar Pradesh state over the weekend. Meanwhile, heat stroke killed another 20 people in Odisha state.

People rushed family members to nearby hospitals for care.

AUDIO: [Man speaking Hindi]

This man in the eastern Bihar state says his family member was struggling to breathe, then died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The heatwave coincided with India’s extensive six-week general election, which wrapped up this week.

Guatemala prison grab — In Guatemala, authorities transferred more than 200 gang members from a prison some 43 miles south of the capital.

Police said members of the Barrio 18 gang had operated a call center for criminal activities out of the prison nicknamed “Little Hell.”

Here’s Deputy Interior Minister Claudia Palencia.

PALENCIA: [Speaking Spanish]

She says here that police also found air conditioners, music equipment, refrigerators, and other comforts.

The Barrio 18 and MS-13 gangs are fighting over territory in Guatemala.

Authorities blamed previous governments for handing over control of prisons to criminals. Interior Minister Francisco Jimenez said authorities will tear down the prison and replace it with a maximum-security prison.

AUDIO: [Protest]

Tiananmen Square anniversary — We wrap up today with activities around the world marking the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Hong Kong residents previously commemorated June 4 when Chinese authorities used tanks and troops to crush peaceful protests on the mainland in 1989.

But Hong Kong’s national security law has outlawed all memorials since 2020, including an annual candlelight vigil in Victoria Park.

AUDIO: [Singing]

In London, people from Hong Kong, Tibet, and Taiwan shouted chants and sang together to commemorate the day.

AUDIO: [Sound of arrest]

And in Hong Kong, police detained performance artist Sanmu Chen after he appeared to write the date of the massacre in the air. He’s one of at least eight people authorities arrested ahead of the anniversary.

Here’s Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee.

LEE: The government position on public events is very clear. All activities by any person must be conducted according to the law.

That’s it for today’s WORLD Tour. Reporting for WORLD, I’m Onize Ohikere in Abuja, Nigeria.

Fireworks over The Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur

If you believe the advertising slogans, then Malaysia is "Truly Asia". With a multicultural melange that draws influences from across the continent, particularly India and China, it's hard to disagree with the tagline.

Reconnect with nature by…

  • Climbing Mount Kinabalu
  • Trekking through the Borneo jungle
  • Meeting monkeys at Kuala Selangor

From the soaring Petronas Towers to its laidback island beaches, the dense rainforests of Sarawak and the ethereal Batu Caves, it’s little wonder millions of visitors flock to Malaysia annually.

Most people like to start their Malaysia tour in Kuala Lumpur , the country's glittering capital. This fast-developing city is home to many of the country’s most popular attractions, including the omnipresent "Twin Towers", which are a mainstay in many Malaysia travel guides.

Make sure to stop for some shopping and entertainment at the impressive Bukit Bintang  – an enormous shopping centre where something exciting happens around the clock.

Take in the capital’s sights at…

  • Petronas Towers: a Kuala Lumpur must-see
  • Bukit Bintang: premier shopping precinct
  • Lake Gardens: a popular recreational park

International flights to Malaysia often land at  Kuala Lumpur International Airport , which is worth checking out even if you've arrived by an alternate route. Its incredible architecture has ranked it one of the most beautiful airports in the world.

Step outside the vibrant capital to see another side of Malaysia, including some of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular beaches on the island of Redang or the iconic longhouses of regional Sarawak .

Get off the beaten path in Sabah , where you can enjoy world-class scuba diving and gorgeous nature reserves. Sabah is located in northeastern Malaysia on the breathtaking island of Borneo . Here, you can climb Mount Kinabalu or dive into the relaxing ocean waters surrounding Sipadan Island .

Go beyond the capital and visit…

  • Penang’s majestic capital, George Town
  • The Batu Caves, a short drive from KL
  • Kuching, just across the South China Sea

Thrill-seekers can continue their adventure with excellent zip-lining courses, white water rafting and cliff diving, while those searching for a bit of rest and relaxation can try golfing or a day at the spa.

Often called the 'Pearl of the Orient', Penang is another must-visit destination. Its capital George Town is a World Heritage site known for its beautiful colonial mansions and stunning mosques. Penang is also a food lover's paradise, home to what many consider the best street food in the world .

After indulging in hot curries and delicious desserts, take a cooking class at the famous Nazlina Spice Station and learn how to recreate unique Malaysian flavours in the confines of your own kitchen.

Kick back on the beach at…

  • Langkawi’s Tanjung Rhu
  • Perhentian in Terengganu
  • Juara Beach on Tioman Island

If you came for the beaches, you simply must visit Langkawi – an island paradise with white-sand beaches and sparkling blue water. Enjoy the island's adventure activities by day on a jet-ski tour or sailing excursion. At night, check out the market for a cheap and delicious Malaysian meal .

An undoubted jewel of the region, Malaysia is one of the best and most diverse holiday destinations you'll find in Southeast Asia.
