Rambler Tumbler

Easiest to Clean

Yeti rambler tumbler.

But, what's the difference between a tumbler and a water bottle ? Tumblers usually have a larger mouth and a wider shape that resembles a cup, versus a narrow bottle. While water bottles are easiest to clean when used with water, tumblers are designed to hold a variety of different hot and cold beverages. Some have handles and small spouts for sipping, while others boast straws that stay in place or fold down for travel.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, our team of experts tests thousands of beverage-related products every year. Over the past couple of months, I personally tested over 40 tumblers. I also worked with our consumer testers to get their feedback on how much they liked using their tumblers in real-life scenarios. Here are the tumblers that excelled in temperature retention, ease of use, versatility and so much more.

The CamelBak Thrive Mug was out best tested tumbler for its great insulation and durability. After 24 hours, I found that the water still remained cold and when dropped from our drop tester it didn't dent or spill all over me or my colleague. It features a comfortable, easy-to-grip handle and a lid with a small spout and closure. The base has a non-slip material that consumer testers have told me is great when they're trying to be extra quiet around sleeping family members. The lid easily screws on and off the tumbler, which is much easier than other pull-off lids I've tested.

The lid leaked a tiny bit when the tumbler was pushed over in our leak test. It was easy to clean up, but something to keep in mind if having a leak-proof tumbler is important to you.

We also tested the Camelbak Thrive Tumbler , which is a smaller, more affordable option, without a handle. This model tested just as well as the the Thrive Mug.

Simple Modern's tumblers have tested well in our Lab tests and conveniently are also affordable. This model from Simple Modern comes with two different lids — a leak-proof lid (as confirmed in Lab testing) and another lid with a straw — so it's perfect for people like me who sometimes wants to use it for iced coffee and sometimes for hot coffee. I just suggest holding on to it well because the bottom did dent quite a bit, with some paint chipping when dropped in our Lab tests.

This tumbler is also compatible with a cocktail shaker lid that is sold separately, but adds even more versatility to this model. While we only tested the 20-ounce option for this story, it also comes in three other sizes: 16-, 24- and 28-ounces in a variety of fun colorways and patterns to choose from.

BrüMate's leak-proof tumbler ensures that you won't drop a single drop of your coffee even if you throw it into your backpack on a long commute. It features a lid with a lock that gives you (and especially people like me!) peace of mind on your commute. I thought it was comfortable to sip out of and the handle offers a comfortable grip. The bottom of the tumbler is tapered to ensure that it will fit inside your car's cupholder.

In our Lab tests, this tumbler got perfect scores in the drop and leak tests. The lid took me a bit of practice to remove from the tumbler since the pieces have to be properly aligned, but I figured it out after a couple of tries thanks to the packaging stickers BrüMate provides.

This insulated tumbler from Owala comes in a variety of fun colorways and offers two ways to drink from it: with the included straw or sip mode through the lid. Out of all the tumblers I've tried, I really like drinking water out of this at my desk because it holds a lot of water and is comfortable to use and hold. I also like using it for my iced coffee. It peformed relatively well in temperature retention over a 24-hour time period, but kept its ice over the course of an entire workday.

Owala's Insulated Travel Tumbler performed well in other Lab tests as well. The straw didn't leak when the tumbler was hit on its side, unlike other tumblers with straws that leaked all over the place. Keep in mind that if you do turn the tumbler upside down it will leak. And there was only a slight dent on the tumbler after drop testing.

I tested nine different wine tumblers to determine the best wine tumbler for this story and the Contigo River North Wine Tumbler tested best overall . It's lightweight (6.1-ounces) and easy to grasp in your hand. It received high scores in drop testing, it didn't dent nor did the lid come off after all three drops and leaked only a tiny bit during leak testing.

Instead of water, each wine tumbler was tested with chilled wine in our Lab. This tumbler has a small spout and is easy to sip from; if you prefer to sip from it without the lid, you can do that as well. Like other wine tumblers we tested, the insulation of this tumbler wasn't as good as larger tumblers, so sip your wine quickly (but that isn't the worse problem you could have).

The HydroJug Traveler is a large, 40-ounce tumbler that features a straw that folds down when you're not drinking from it, which proved to be leak-proof in our tests. (It's actually one of the only 40-ounce tumblers I tested that's leak-proof.) It didn't leak in our drop test, where we drop the tumbler from a height of three feet, but it did dent. I love that with such a large capacity, I don't need to refill this tumbler often to meet my daily hydration goals.

"I prefer that the lid is see-through, so you can easily see what's inside the cup without unscrewing the top," said one tester who also appreciated the HydroJug's rubber base, which makes it less prone to falling over on certain surfaces.

The Stanley IceFlow Stainless Steel Tumbler comes in four different sizes from 20-ounces to a whopping 96-ounces and over 30 different colorways. In our Lab tests it didn't leak at all, receiving a high score, but it did dent a bit from drop testing. While my colleagues and I really like the Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler , a.k.a. the Stanley cup, which has tested well in our Labs, we think this is a great option for those who love to travel thanks to its leak-proof straw, tapered bottom and comfortable handle.

"I love that it has a higher capacity than most water bottles, but still fits in the same cup holders thanks to its shape, perfect for road trips, air travel and hiking ," said one tester. They went on to say that the handle is useful and easy to hold and how convenient it is that the straw easily flips up and down; "it’s all the appeal of the iconic Stanley cup made easy for travelers."

RELATED: Stanley vs. Yeti: Which Tumbler Is Better?

The Yeti Rambler Tumbler is an easy-to-hold and durable tumbler (no dents in drop testing) that comes in various sizes and colorways to match your style and beverage preference.

On the brand's website you can even customize your tumbler by engraving your own uploaded design, monogram or more onto the back or front of your tumbler. (I engraved one for my mom for Mother's Day!) We've tested various capacities of this tumbler, but we're especially fond of the 20-ounce version which is great for transporting your morning coffee, a smoothie or even just for keeping water at your desk.

The Yeti MagSlider lid makes it easy to open and close the drinking spout and to remove the closure for easy cleaning. Better yet? All pieces are dishwasher-safe. Keep in mind that if you accidentally drop this tumbler, the MagSlider may fall off (it did in a drop test) and spill your beverage, so be careful when transporting.

The Competition: Other tumblers we tested

line break

While these tumblers might not be for everyone, we think they're also solid options for certain needs and preferences:

•Looking for a ceramic-lined option? W&P Porter Insulated Tumbler features a comfortable non-slip silicone sleeve that prevented the tumbler from denting during drop testing, but it didn't have the best temperature retention.

•A compact ceramic-lined option? Fellow Carter Cold Travel Mug comes in a variety of neutral colorways and has rather good insulation, but it's a little small compared to most of the ones I tested.

•A small tumbler with a fold down straw? Pelican Hydration Pelican Traveler is a small 22-ounce option with a fold down straw and a leak-proof seal that was a little hard to clean.

•An option with a stainless steel straw? Corkcicle Cold Cup Insulated Tumbler was rather durable in testing and comes in a variety of fun colorways. A couple of consumer testers thought the straw was hard to drink out of.

•Interested in a hot and cold option? Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler can hold either hot or cold beverages and is compatible with a straw lid or a closeable lid, which is nice, but I found during testing that it came off a little too easily.

How we test tumblers

line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we evaluate each piece of drinkware for leakage, temperature retention, durability and more.

We've tested thousands of pieces of drinkware over the last couple of decades. In our latest round, I tested over 40 tumblers, including 17 Stanley cup dupes side-by-side to evaluate performance and ease of use.

an owala tumbler on a drop tester about to be dropped

To determine each model's durability, we use our drop-tester machine ( pictured ) to drop each cup at a height of three feet — twice with the cup standing upright and once with it on its side.

To assess temperature retention, every tumbler is filled to maximum capacity with water. We then remove a specific amount of water from each tumbler, replacing it with a calculated amount of ice.

The internal water temperature of each tumbler is documented eight times over 30 hours to determine which dupes retain temperature best.

a tumbler leaking on a paper towel

To test leakage, we fill each tumbler with the same amount of water and food dye. We knock over each tumbler and let it sit on its side for 30 seconds, then we check to see if any water seeps through its straw or lid.

To evaluate ease of use, we consider how each tumbler opens and closes. Using either a dishwasher or dish soap and a brush, we test how easy it is to clean each model.

In addition to Lab tests, we send tumblers to consumer testers to get their opinions on how they fare in real life. When it came to tumblers, we had over 60 consumer testers provide valuable testing insight.

What to look for when buying a tumbler

line break

✔️ Hot versus cold: While some tumblers can hold hot and cold beverages, some are specifically designed for one temperature of beverage over the other. Models with straws tend to only be for cold beverages, while tumblers with small spouts are ideal for slowly sipping hot coffee or tea.

✔️ Size: Tumblers range in capacity from a small 8-ounce for drinking a double shot of espresso to a large 42-ounce for staying hydrated. After you've determined what you would like to hold in your tumbler, think about how much of that liquid you'll want to drink and use that as a guide for selecting the right size for you. ✔️ Materials: If you want your cold beverage to stay chilled and your hot beverage to remain hot, select a tumbler with an insulated material. Insulated tumblers are usually made from double or triple walled stainless steel. All picks on this list are made out of this and some have a plastic lid. ✔️ Ease of drinking: Tumblers usually offer one of two drinking methods. Those designed for cold drinks boast straws, while those for hot beverages have small spouts for sipping. Some tumblers also have two types of lids so you can switch it up based on your beverage. ✔️ Handle: About half of the tumblers we've tested have a handle. Handles make for easier carrying by hand, but might not allow you to carry your tumbler in a backpack pocket or car cupholder, depending on the tumbler. Think about how you will be transporting or not transporting your tumbler before determining which model is right for you. ✔️ Leak-resistance: Do you want to throw your tumbler into your backpack or simply put it into your car cup holder? This determines how important leak resistance if for your lifestyle. There are some leak resistant picks on this list that ensure peace of mind, but if that's not as important to you there are other good picks as well that may leak if dropped accidentally. ✔️ Cleanability: All tumblers should be cleaned regularly to eliminate bacteria and prevent mold growth. If a tumbler must be hand-washed, use a bottle brush to thoroughly clean the interior with soap and warm water. If a tumbler has a straw, we recommend that you hand-wash it for a thorough clean, even if the tumbler states that it is dishwasher-safe. If you're not a fan of using a bottle brush to clean a tumbler, ensure that it’s dishwasher-safe before purchasing. The dishwasher's tough environment can deform the seal on tumblers that aren't dishwasher-safe and ruin the exterior over time, so always check if a tumbler is dishwasher-safe.

Which tumbler keeps ice longest?

line break

In general, we found insulated water bottles to keep ice longer than some insulated tumblers that don't have airtight lids . We determined through testing that the larger the water capacity of the tumbler, like a Stanley cup dupe, the better the ice retention. Our best overall pick from Camelbak had excellent temperature retention, holding ice longer than other picks on this list.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Breaking down Messi's travel miles for Inter Miami and Argentina

  • Roberto Rojas

When you think must-see events in 2024, what comes to mind? There's high demand for NFL tickets and the seismic draw of international pop singer Taylor Swift, to name just two, but equally hyped this year has been the chance to see a 5-foot-7 Argentine soccer player called Lionel Messi play soccer around the USA. And he's covering a lot of ground to make sure of it.

Swift's Eras Tour last year smashed several records -- including being the highest-grossing tour of all time -- and logs 23 different countries on five continents (total: 65,069 miles) over nearly 20 months. The Chiefs played 23 games (including preseason and postseason), including a date with the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany, on their way to another Super Bowl title, racking up over 28,000 miles along the way. However, when it comes to travel, Messi is simply built different.

In his first full year of a 2½-year contract with David Beckham's Inter Miami of Major League Soccer , the 36-year-old Argentine is in a unique economic and logistical predicament. Soccer players in Europe face a lot of travel -- especially if they play for teams that are competing in UEFA club competitions -- but Messi's schedule is next-level ridiculous. Not only is he playing across North America for his club -- MLS runs on a March to November schedule unlike in Europe, where Messi used to play, which would run from August to May and allow a little rest in the summer -- but he will also play in the Copa América for his national team, which is also being hosted in the United States.

- Stream on ESPN+: NWSL, LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

The layering of major domestic travel -- Miami is in the extreme southeastern U.S., making it a long trip to most of its road games -- with his Argentina duties makes for a dizzying schedule as Messi looks to defend the Albicelestes' continental crown that they won in 2021.

Tickets to see Messi in the hot pink of Inter Miami on the road (up to $1,000 a ticket) or the sky blue and white of Argentina (Copa América group stage tickets average in the $300 range) have reached exorbitant prices. It's not without controversy, either: Messi has already missed a few games for club and country in 2024 due to injuries or rest -- the latter saw the Vancouver Whitecaps issue a statement before the game, causing disappointment for fans who spent more than 250 Canadian dollars ($180) to watch his magic up close.

Messi's not alone in having a grueling calendar: The likes of Jude Bellingham ( England ) and Vinícius Júnior ( Brazil ) will play on Saturday for Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund before jetting off to join their national teams and prepare for more high-level competitive soccer this summer ( Euros in Germany and Copa América in the United States). The Euro and Copa finals are both July 14; should either of their teams make it that far, they will receive only a brief respite before their club, Real Madrid, begins its preseason tour of the U.S. on July 31.

With changes coming to both the UEFA Champions League -- which begins its expanded Swiss model format, with 36 teams instead of 32, in 2024-25 -- and the 2026 World Cup growing from 32 teams to 48, we might well see wilder schedules for elite players in the future, too.

With Argentina the favorite to retain their Copa América trophy in the United States ( +175 odds at ESPN BET ) as well as Inter Miami becoming the favorite to win MLS Cup with their star-studded team ( +180 odds at ESPN BET ), Messi will rack up a lot of frequent flier miles. Let's look at just how exhausting this year could be for the GOAT.

Before the start of the MLS season, Inter Miami embarked on a preseason tour that nearly matched the circumference of the earth. They began their seven-game, 23,698-mile odyssey in El Salvador to play its national team before traveling back to the United States and then to Asia, making stops in Saudi Arabia -- though no reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo -- Hong Kong and Japan. Then they returned to Florida for their final warm-up game against Messi's boyhood club, Newell's Old Boys .

Not only was this tour controversial for its scale -- with Miami looking to cash in on the global marketability of its superstar, who has been joined by former Barca teammates Sergio Busquets , Jordi Alba and Luis Suárez -- but also for the first instance of Messi failing to appear. Fans in Hong Kong called for a refund after Messi sat out Feb. 4 because of an injury. It caused outrage -- average ticket prices were 4,880 Hong Kong dollars ($624) for a game in which he didn't feature -- and prompted even the Government of Hong Kong to express disappointment toward Messi's absence.

The situation further escalated when Messi was seen training in Japan before playing against Vissel Kobe three days later, which then led to Argentina's friendlies that were supposed to be scheduled the following month in China being canceled by the organizers . Messi would later speak out , blaming an adductor injury for sitting out the match in Hong Kong.

Nevertheless, in a span of 26 days, Inter Miami traveled through five different countries on two continents, clocking nearly 24,000 miles. And their season wouldn't begin for another week after their return to Fort Lauderdale from Tokyo.

Regular season

Traveling across the United States and Canada is never easy for a lot of MLS teams: Trips can be as short as 45 minutes (between the stadiums of New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls ) or as long as a six-hour flight (from Massachusetts, where the New England Revolution play, to the Vancouver Whitecaps). Messi completed a full round-the-world journey when Inter Miami went to face the LA Galaxy in February for just their second game of the MLS season, and despite missing six games since then -- including trips to Nashville (797 miles), New York City (1,067 miles) and Washington, D.C. (900 miles) -- he has still added over 14,000 miles to his 2024 tally in just three months.

The shortest trip Messi could potentially make would be 317 miles after their match away to the Columbus Crew (Oct. 2) to Canada for their match against Toronto FC . His longest Inter Miami trip of this year was that date with LA Galaxy, when he left Fort Lauderdale for Carson, California, on a 2,329-mile odyssey.

Then there are the games in which he didn't feature. The 2,786-mile trip to Vancouver ( and 2-1 win ) would have been his longest trip of the year had the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner made it on the plane; he also didn't feature in the 183-mile trip north to Orlando. If you want to see him in person, your best bet will be either a game in the eastern United States (away to NYCFC on Sep. 21) or at home at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale -- where Inter Miami have nine more regular-season games -- because of his international duties with Argentina.

If Messi suited up for every Miami game on the schedule, it would be an itinerary stretching to nearly 35,000 miles!

Playing for Argentina

While it will be an important year for Inter Miami as they look to win their first-ever MLS Cup -- they're leading the league after 16 matches and are odds-on favorites to win it all -- Messi will also look to play in what could be one of his last tournaments for Argentina.

After nearly two decades of service for his country, Messi delivered Argentina's first Copa América title since 1993 (beating Brazil 1-0 in 2021 ) and lifted his first FIFA World Cup (and his country's first since 1986) in an 18-month span. This summer, he'll try to make it back-to-back Copa América titles for Argentina, something they've done four times before.

Lucky for him, the Copa is being hosted in the U.S., and as defending champs with a base in south Florida, Argentina won't have to trek too much during the group stage as they go to Atlanta (vs. Canada ), East Rutherford, New Jersey (vs. Chile ), and Miami (vs. Peru ) -- that's 2,383 miles up and down the East Coast in three matches. Assuming they also win their group and make it all the way to the final, they would have a quarterfinal in Houston, a semifinal back in East Rutherford and then a final at the home of the Miami Dolphins -- another 4,000-plus miles added to the tally.

Don't expect things to cool off beyond that, either. Argentina go right into World Cup mode in September, with six qualifiers over three months during the business end of the MLS season. On the calendar: trips to Colombia , Venezuela and Paraguay . If Inter Miami qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs, Messi will travel at least 24,449 miles between the two continents, but that could be extended if Tata Martino's side makes a deep postseason run. The second leg of a potential MLS quarterfinal (Nov. 12) comes right before Argentina play a pair of games Nov. 14 and Nov. 19 in the World Cup cycle, with the MLS Eastern Conference semifinals beginning Nov. 25.

Bear in mind: This is one fairly typical season for Messi, though coming at the end of a distinguished 20-year career, it's clear that there is more strategy and planning used when it comes to when, and how, he gets some much-needed rest. While he's still performing at a high level -- 833 goals and counting, with 10 goals and 10 assists in just 855 minutes for Miami so far in 2024 -- you also look at the scale of how much bigger the travel times would've been.

Had Messi been able to travel to play in every single match this year for Inter Miami and Argentina, he would've clocked in 87,513 miles in total, or roughly 1,823 miles per trip -- nearly three times around the world in 2024. With the soccer calendar expanding, new tournaments popping up for clubs and national teams and a global fan base desperate to see the world's best, it's entirely possible someone surpasses Messi for mileage in the not-too-distant future.

Cricket T20 World Cup: Long Island businesses expect tournament to boost economy

travel cup contigo

Alishbah Mirza is a die-hard cricket fan — so much that when India hosted an international tourney in the fall, she set her alarm for 4 a.m. so she wouldn’t miss the action.

“Literally, every single match … I used to get up just to start watching the matches because the hype was so much,” said Mirza, 20, a dentistry student at Farmingdale State College.

But when  Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup matches kick off at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, not far from her Hicksville home and at the more reasonable hour of 10:30 a.m., Mirza will be lucky if she can watch any match — especially when her home country, Pakistan, faces off against longtime cricket rival India. She'll be busy tending the counter at the popular Bengali Sweet Shop in Hicksville, which expects to draw cricket fans to nibble on snacks and sweets like samosa chaat and gulab jamun and drink chai while watching the tournament on the store's TV screens.

“We will have to ramp up, [and add] more employees and staff,” owner Rajesh Kumar said. On a normal weekday, he'd have two people working in the shop, but on match days he'll be bringing in all his part-time employees for a total staff of seven, he said.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • The T20 World Cup tournament on Long Island is  expected to generate $150 million to $160 million in economic activity in Nassau County, officials said.

Hotels around Eisenhower Park are filling up for the June dates, and some places are charging premium rates — more than twice their usual nightly charge.

  • Some restaurants that cater to customers from countries with large cricket fan based are installing televisions or holding watch parties for those who can’t get tickets.

With Nassau playing host to the World Cup, workers at the sweet shop on South Broadway and a few other area businesses told Newsday they are ready to deal with the scores of fans expected to eat, shop, play and hunker down at hotels during the 12-day event at the park.   Most of the world’s top teams, including India, Pakistan and South Africa, will play at the county park's temporary  34,000-seat stadium . The tournament's nine  matches on Long Island , including the warmup on Saturday, are expected to generate $150 million to $160 million in revenue for local businesses and the county, a sports economist and a county official projected.

The International Cricket Council, the governing body for the sport also known as ICC, did not provide estimates of the number of tourists expected to come to the county for the tournament.

World Cup's economic impact on LI

Darcy Belyea, Nassau County commissioner of parks, recreation and museums, put the economic boost to the county at between $150 million and $160 million based on the financial impact of the T20 Cricket World Cup in Australia two years ago. That estimate includes revenue from hotel stays, dining, services at salons, as well as money spent on recreation, including playing golf or chartering a boat, Belyea said.

“We're hoping that the spending is widespread” and that “people with some extra money to spend, they're going to be drawn to” malls like Roosevelt Field in Garden City and Americana in Manhasset, Belyea said.

Under a use and occupancy permit, T20 World Cup USA Inc., the nonprofit hosting the U.S. games for the ICC, is paying the county a $100,000 fee per match to reimburse the county for police, fire and medical expenses, Belyea said. The public works and parks departments will receive $25,000 per match for maintenance and repairs, including for the warmup match Saturday and the eight matches following that, she said.

The county also will receive a portion of revenue from parking at the Nassau Coliseum and Nassau Community College, Belyea said.

Off-site parking on county property for the matches is capped at $40, according to the permit issued to T20 World Cup USA.

Travel packages inquiries

Daniel Kelly II, a sports economist at New York University’s Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport, also estimated the economic boost to Nassau will hit at least $150 million, but said, “It’s not because of new visitors to the area coming in” but because of the spending from the “immigrant populations, the West Indian, Caribbean population, plus the Indian American population” in the New York metro area.

Cricket is the second-most-popular sport in the world, and has a huge following in India, Pakistan, Australia, Jamaica and elsewhere.

Of the 5.8 million foreign-born people residing in the New York metro area, 1.3 million, or 23%, were from the Caribbean, including Jamaica and the West Indies, and 656,293, or 11%, were from South Central Asia, including India and Pakistan, according to the 2022 U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

The eight matches that will be played in Nassau are not the highest-stakes competitions, Kelly said.

Aside from India and Pakistan competing here, “The true high-stakes [semifinals and finals] matches for the tournament are going to be in the Caribbean. … I think those are going to be the locations that the majority of [international] travelers are going to come in for,” he said.

Iqbaljit Batra, co-owner of Travel Time & Tours, a travel agency in Hicksville, concurred, saying he’s getting inquiries about packages for the final match in Barbados but said people will wait to see how their teams perform before buying tickets.

Batra, who played cricket in college in India, said if India or Pakistan get into the finals, Long Island fans will be willing to pay a lot to see that match.

Hotels in Barbados are already fully booked, he said, and the cost of a hospitality package for one person to travel from Long Island to Barbados, including airfare, accommodations and game ticket, could cost as much as $7,000.

Mark Jones, an ICC spokesman in the United States, said in an email 75% of the tickets sold for the matches in Nassau County were to U.S. residents. The largest contingents of foreign ticket buyers are coming from Canada, the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Australia, he said.

Demand for hotels

An informal survey of 12 hotels near the park found their bookings for the first two weeks of June were 8% higher than the same period last year, said Dorothy Roberts, president of the Northport-based Long Island Hospitality Association.

But June typically has been busy for Nassau County hotels because of wedding season and sporting events, such as the Belmont Stakes, an annual horse race that's been held at Belmont Park in Elmont for more than 100 years until this year, said Roberts, who is also vice president of hotel operations and development at Oxford Hospitality USA. The Jericho-based company owns the Hilton Garden Inns in Roslyn and Melville, and Homewood Suites by Hilton Long Island-Melville.

The horse race will be held in Saratoga Springs this year and next because of renovations at Belmont Park.

The Garden City Hotel, a luxury facility that is the highest-priced hotel in Nassau County, had been the host hotel for the Belmont Stakes every June for decades until this year, said Carole Frohne, director of sales and marketing at the hotel, which is about 4½ miles from Eisenhower Park.

“This year was nice, having another event come to Long Island to help fill the gap … It helped compress the market, though, so we’re pretty much booked. We have a few rooms here and there, but, overall, we’re going to have a good June,” she said.

The hotel has 269 rooms, with rates ranging from $399 to $1,269 a night, for the first two weeks of June.

The Long Island Marriott in Uniondale has started to sell out of rooms recently, said Matt Fisher, director of sales and marketing at the 615-room hotel.

“Everything is happening last minute,” he said.

The hotel is 1.6 miles from Eisenhower Park.

Rooms are sold out on the nights before the popular matches, such as the match between Pakistan and India scheduled for June 9, he said.

The Marriott’s rates for the first two weeks of June have doubled due to high demand, and now range from $309 to $599 per night, he said.

Some teams and other large groups booked hotel rooms in Brooklyn to save money and because they wanted newer rooms, Fisher said.

As of May 27, the average daily rate at Airbnb and Vrbo short-term vacation rentals in Nassau County for June 3-12 was $239.64, which is similar to the average rate of $240.41 for the corresponding 10-day period last year, according to AirDNA, a Denver-based provider of analytics on the short-term rental industry.

The lack of a large price increase this year likely is due to more properties being available for short-term rentals, said Bram Gallagher, an economist at AirDNA.

Of the daily average of 937 short-term rental properties available June 3-12 in Nassau as of May 27, 453, or 48%, had been rented, according to AirDNA. At the same point last year, a daily average of 243, or 48%, of 504 available short-term rental properties in the county had been rented for the 10-day period.

“We’ve had a big increase in supply in Nassau County. Some of this could have come on board … for this tournament,” Gallagher said.

Hotel tax revenue is reported quarterly, so the revenue going to the county for hotel stays won't be known immediately, Nassau's Belyea said, adding money goes into tourism, parks and museums.

“A bump in [hotel taxes] certainly helps us benefit our budget and allows us to do more programming,” she said.

'Good time for everybody'

East Meadow Chamber of Commerce president Anthony Bott hopes the tournament “brings a lot of business” to the hamlet.

“I believe the restaurants are going to be packed. It should be a good time for everybody,” he said.

Eateries like the Shah’s Halal franchise in the East Meadow Plaza shopping center stand ready for cricketmania.

Rahmat Tokhi, manager and part-owner of the East Meadow franchise, said he is adding seating and temporarily boosting staff to accommodate customers.

“It’s going to be crazy,” Tokhi said.

His home country, Afghanistan, wasn’t part of the Commonwealth, where the sport took root and spread to Asian and African countries under the British Empire. But the game has caught on in Afghanistan, he said.

Ali Zar, owner of East Meadow-based Zar Sports USA, is selling jerseys through his online cricket gear store. He said he ordered about 700 jerseys for the Indian and Pakistani teams ahead of the World Cup. About 100 of those bear the names of star players, including Pakistan's Babar Azam and India's Virat Kohli. He's also selling cricket merchandise at his Bethpage gift shop Cardsmart.

“The Babar Azam, Virat Kohli, they’re going to fly out first,” said Zar, a Pakistani American who's played cricket all his life.

As the World Cup gets ready to kick off, some businesses and entities across Long Island are hosting viewing parties where fans can watch the matches with fellow sport enthusiasts.

The father and son team of Gary and Rubal Sikka, who owns Mint, an Indian and Asian-fusion restaurant in Garden City, and Pearl banquet hall in Hicksville, are hosting viewing parties at their venues on 115-inch screens on June 9.

“Right now, we are focusing on India and Pakistan because that is more in demand,” Gary Sikka said. “Nobody is getting the tickets. So many people were approaching us … so we opened this up to the public.”

He said they've taken reservations for about 60% of the spots at both the 190-seat restaurant where they are charging $60 and at the 314-seat banquet hall for $100.

That cost covers breakfast, lunch, wine and beer.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Travis Head to miss Australia's warm-up matches of T20 World Cup 2024

S ydney [Australia], May 27 (ANI): Australia's T20 World Cup 2024 squad's core members such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Travis Head will miss their national side warm-up matches as they will travel back to Australia to take a short break ahead of the mega event.

After participating in Sunday's IPL final, Cummins, Head, and Starc will travel back to Australia before re-joining the World Cup team. Among those spending time at home are Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, who were a part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's playoff run. When the Australian team travels to Barbados in preparation for their opening group game against Oman on June 5, those five are expected to arrive.

"It's important to be flexible. Guys have been at the IPL. They've been playing a lot of cricket so we've prioritized giving them a couple of days at home, see their family, refresh and play the long game for this tournament. We'll get to our 15 eventually but it's really important that we give them a break, even if it's [just] a couple of days at home," Marsh told cricket.com.au.

Marsh, who will captain Australia in a global event for the first time, expressed confidence that he would be able to play both warm-up matches as a batter.

"I'm just ticking off the last few things I need to tick off to be fit and available. All went well today. It's been progressively slow but finally getting there now and looking forward to getting stuck into the tournament," the star all-rounder added.

The tournament will begin on June 1, with the United States and Canada playing the opener.

Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5, before Group B fixtures against England, Namibia and Scotland.

Earlier in May, Australia named their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
