Serendipity3 will open its first NYC outpost at OYO Times Square in early September 2024. Shown is ... [+] an illustration of part of the restaurant's interior.

Fans of Serendipity3 might first think of this popular New York City dessert spot for their signature treat — the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate.

Starting in early September 2024, they will have two places to head to, Serendipity3’s original Upper East Side location or their new outpost in Times Square.

In timing with the restaurant’s 70th anniversary this year, Serendipity3 is opening Serendipity3 Times Square. Its location is within OYO Times Square, a hotel along West 47th Street at 7th Avenue. This branch is scheduled to open publicly on September 5.

“What prompted our second location was our need for more space to be able to better serve our guests,” explained Chef Joe Calderone, Serendipity3's chief creative officer. “What better place than Times Square — the crossroads of the world.”

Serendipity3's signature item is their Frrrozen Hot Chocolate.

Founded in 1954 by three friends, Calvin Holt, Stephen Bruce, and Patch Carradine, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Serendipity3 is now marking its first expansion in NYC. In the past, the brand had outposts in Westport, Conn., Boston, Boca Raton, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. and even in Tokyo.

Yet visitors and patrons continue to flock to its flagship address on East 60th Street so much that it’s essential to book reservations beforehand.

In return, the dining experience can have its own rewards. In July 2024, Serendipity3 recognized a longtime customer named Barbara Silverstein with a special day-one sundae made in her honor.

Other regular customers or first-timers involve many celebrities. Marilyn Monroe often came to Serendipity3 to study her scripts. Apparently, you can book a reservation for the table that she sat at.

Since 1954, Serendipity3 has continued to welcome a good mix of customers. In July 2024, the ... [+] restaurant honored its longtime patron, Barbara Silverstein, with a special-custom made sundae.

Andy Warhol was a Serendipity 3 patron and paid for his meals with his illustrations. For 2024’s National Pop Art Day (January 28), Serendipity3 partnered with Madame Tussauds New York to honor this icon with a culinary masterpiece — the “Madame Tussauds x Serendipity3 POP! Art Sundae.”

Other celebrity sightings have included Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Joan Rivers, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé, Jay-Z and their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Selena Gomez also has eaten here and was once a part-owner and investor in Serendipity Brands , a Serendipity3-inspired line of various ice cream flavors and desserts.

Another story goes that First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy wanted to have the recipe for Frrrozen Hot Chocolate for serving it at the White House; she was turned down.

“Serendipity3 has been wildly popular for many, many years; really since its inception,” said Calderone. “After being featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show three times, and having the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate on Oprah's Bucket List, our popularity grew even further.”

What makes this bestselling beverage stand out is its smooth-frosty play on a hot drink. This icy solid chocolaty serving comes in a glass bowl with a pair of straws and is topped with a whip cream swirl and a sprinkling of chocolate shavings.

In late 2023, Cher (who also has frequented Serendipity3) and Jimmy Fallon shared the 30 millionth Frrrozen Hot Chocolate on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Serendipity 3 holds multiple Guinness World Records, including the world’s most expensive milkshake . It once offered $200 French fries embellished with imported goose fat and edible gold.

The restaurant’s diner-reflecting menu encompasses burgers, fries, mac and cheese servings, salads, hotdogs and sandwiches plus desserts like their popular Chocolate Blackout Cake. It’s also possible to order a regular sundae.

The restaurant also has had a good amount of screen time. It was a filming location for Serendipity , the 2001 romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. Other credits include One Fine Day, with George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer; Trust the Man, with Julianne Moore and David Duchovny; and Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, which is based on the children’s book.

The interior of the upcoming Serendipity3 Times Square has wall decor that gives a nod to Marilyn ... [+] Monroe. The actress often came to the original Serendipity3 location to read her scripts.

As for Serendipity3 Times Square, its design by Wid Chapman Architects is described as having a more modern approach. “The decor is a new 2024 take on the iconic, eclectic decor of our 1954 landmark location,” said Calderone.

Glass mosaic artwork will emulate vintage Tiffany lamp shades within the original location. Amid mirrored mosaic domed ceiling, other furnishings extend to Warhol-inspired wallpaper and a giant clock salvaged from a building in London.

As for the menu, Serendipity3 Times Square will be very similar to the UES location but also will possess a full liquor license. One addition is the Sunday Chicken Dinner Sundae, a giant goblet that literally seems to hold a whole meal.

While the original recipe remains intact, the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate now comes in 13 varieties. There are complimenting flavors like mint, peanut butter, salted caramel or s’mores along with a vegan version.

“The secret to Serendipity3's staying power is that it hasn't changed much over the past 70 years!” said Calderone. “Our key to our longevity and popularity is our ability to continue to create a fun, whimsical experience using our incredible food, desserts and over-the-top decor.”

With Serendipity3 Times Square at OYO Times Square, the hotel’s address is 157 W 47th St. The original Serendipity3 is located at 225 E 60th St.

What to Know About Every Song and Artist Featured in the DNC’s Dance Party Roll Call

Rapper Lil Jon performs with the Georgia delegation during the Ceremonial Roll Call of States on the second day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, on August 20, 2024.

T he roll call vote at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday felt more like a huge dance party.

While Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz had already been confirmed as the party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees through an earlier virtual vote, the DNC decided to retain the tradition of a convention floor roll call that this year turned into more of a ceremonial celebration.

And they certainly had a lot of fun doing it. Curated by DJ Cassidy, who was dressed in a shiny blue suit, each delegation was backed by a specific soundtrack associated with their state or territory.

The moment proved a hit among viewers at home, with many social media users commenting on the energetic atmosphere and some contrasting it with the more staid Republican roll call last month.

I'm gonna just go ahead and call this moment with DJ Cassidy calling the roll call the greatest moment of the DNC. pic.twitter.com/VDxrtAcYIG — Amee Vanderpool (@girlsreallyrule) August 21, 2024
I never teared up during a Democratic Convention Roll Call before! That was FANTASTIC! The joy, the exuberance, the energy and excitement! I went back to see how the roll call at the RNC compared! Hahahaha! It was like a wake! SAD. — bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 21, 2024
I’m sorry but this #DNC2024 roll call with DJ Cassidy, themed state music and party/club atmosphere is blowing the RNC’s roll call out of the water. It looks like a giant party and celebration and everyone in that room looks like they’re having a blast. — Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) August 21, 2024

Here are all the songs that were played and why they may have been chosen to represent each delegation, in order of appearance:

“ Higher Love ,” as covered by Whitney Houston and Kygo.

Houston’s 1990 cover of the Steve Winwood song was remixed by Norwegian DJ Kygo in 2019. The electronic dance track was played in 2020 after President Joe Biden’s victory speech, and it was hailed at the time by music critics as a choice that spoke to diverse audiences with the unifying message of love. It was also played Monday night in Chicago after Biden’s speech at the DNC .

“ Sweet Home Alabama ” by rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, which has long been embraced as an unofficial state anthem and symbol of Southern pride.

“ Feel It Still ” by Portugal. The Man, an indie rock band from Wasilla—the Alaskan city where Republican Sarah Palin once served as mayor before becoming governor. The band is known for embracing its Alaskan roots, with songs and music videos paying tribute to growing up in Alaska and the Alaskan wilderness. Its founding members are also strong advocates of Native Alaskan communities.

American Samoa

“ The Edge of Glory ” by Lady Gaga, who had previously performed a private concert for DNC delegates in 2016 and sang the national anthem at Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

“ Edge of Seventeen ” from the debut album of rock and roll icon Stevie Nicks, whose hometown is Phoenix. Nicks dedicated a piano version of her song “Show Them the Way” to Biden and Harris in 2020, and in 2022 she urged people to head to the polls for the 2022 midterm elections with poem-turned-song “Get It Back.”

“ Don’t Stop ” by rock band Fleetwood Mac, of which Nicks was a member. The song has become closely associated with former President and Arkansas governor Bill Clinton, who used it as the theme song of his 1992 presidential campaign. The band, which broke up in 1987, even reunited for a performance of “Don’t Stop” at Clinton’s 1993 Inaugural Gala.

“ September ” by Earth, Wind & Fire. One of the band’s lead singers, Philip Bailey, was from Denver. In 2016, the band protested the use of “September” at the Republican National Convention without their consent.

Connecticut

“ Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours) ” by Stevie Wonder, who performed the song live at the 2008 DNC. Former President Barack Obama, who spoke at the DNC on Tuesday, once hailed Wonder as his “musical hero” and he and former First Lady Michelle have enjoyed a long friendship with the singer, who has appeared at Obama’s rallies and performed for them numerous times both in public and in private.

Democrats Abroad

“ Love Train ” by The O'Jays. The song’s opening line is perhaps the most fitting for Democrats abroad: “People all over the world, join hands.” The band also performed the song for the virtual 2020 DNC, modifying the lyrics of the song to: “Get on the Biden and the Harris Train.”

Washington, D.C.

“ Let Me Clear My Throat ” by D.C.-born rapper DJ Kool.

“ I Won’t Back Down ” by Florida-formed rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The song was notably used by former Republican President George W. Bush during his 2000 presidential campaign until Petty sent a cease and desist letter, arguing that the song implied an endorsement. Petty would go on to sing the song at Al Gore’s home after the Democratic candidate conceded the presidency to Bush.

In 2020, Petty’s family, after the singer died in 2017, similarly sent Donald Trump a cease and desist letter for playing “I Won’t Back Down” at his rally, while the family said they were “ touched ” that Biden used the song during his post-election celebrations in 2020 and offered their congratulations.

“ Turn Down for What ” by DJ Snake and Lil Jon. In perhaps the most viral moment of the roll call, the song was performed live by Lil Jon, who rapped his way down the steps of the Chicago United Center while leading the crowd to chant: “We’re not going back”—one of the Harris campaign’s central messages.

The Atlanta-born and -based artist had previously participated in a “Turn Out for What” celebrity-studded music video for a Rock the Vote campaign in 2014.

“ Espresso ” by Sabrina Carpenter. (It’s unclear what the song’s connection to Guam is, though it’s a song of the summer .)

“ 24K Magic ” by Bruno Mars, who was born and raised in Honolulu.

“ Private Idaho ” by the B-52s, though the Georgia-based band has said the song isn’t really about the state of Idaho.

“ Sirius ” by British rock band the Alan Parsons Project. The instrumental song has become closely associated with the Chicago Bulls NBA team and its former star Michael Jordan.

“ Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough ” by Michael Jackson, the Indiana-born King of Pop.

“ Celebration ” by Kool & the Gang. (It’s unclear what the song’s connection to Iowa is, though it’s a timeless bop.)

“ Carry on Wayward Son ” by Kansas, the rock band founded in the state’s capital Topeka.

“ First Class ” by Jack Harlow, who was born in Louisville. Harlow performed last year at a rally by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who was among Harris’ shortlist of contenders for running mate.

“ All I Do Is Win ” by DJ Khaled, who was born in New Orleans and has fundraised for Democrats and supported Hillary Clinton in 2016, including by performing at a campaign rally, and he participated in a Grammys sketch in 2018 mocking Trump..

“ Shut Up and Dance ” by Walk the Moon, a pop band that doesn’t have any apparent connection to the state of Maine but whose members have said their fear and shock after Trump’s 2016 election victory inspired their music.

“ Respect ” by the late great Aretha Franklin, a staunch Democrat who performed at multiple conventions over the years, including the 1968 DNC that was also held in Chicago.

Massachusetts

“ I’m Shipping up to Boston ” by Dropkick Murphys, with lyrics by American folk singer Woody Guthrie. The Celtic punk band was formed in Quincy, Mass., and the song—which was made famous after its use in the 2006 Boston-based film The Departed —is widely used to represent Boston at sporting events. It also served as the entrance music for Biden during his visit to Ireland last year. Dropkick Murphys singer Ken Casey has spoken out in the past against Trump and in support of Democratic candidates.

“ Lose Yourself ” by Eminem, who famously grew up in Detroit. The rapper, who has made no secret of his opposition to Trump, endorsed the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020 and agreed to let “Lose Yourself” be used in a campaign ad; in 2023, he sent Vivek Ramaswamy a cease and desist letter to stop using his songs during the Republican’s short-lived presidential campaign. In 2016, Obama said he listened to “Lose Yourself” to pump himself up before his DNC speech.

Mississippi

“ Twistin’ the Night Away ” by soul singer Sam Cooke, who was born in Clarksdale, Miss. (Another song by Cooke, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” has a long history of use in Democratic politics.)

“ Good Luck, Babe! ” by Chappell Roan. The breakout pop singer from Willard, Mo., has already been referenced by the meme-embracing Harris campaign, which sold camo trucker hats similar to the singer’s “Midwest Princess” merch, prompting an “ is this real? ” reaction from Roan. Earlier this year, the singer turned down an invitation from the White House to perform for a Pride event, saying: “We want liberty, justice and freedom for all. When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.”

“ American Woman ” by Lenny Kravitz. The New York-born singer congratulated Biden and Harris when they won the presidential election in 2020, and he performed at the 2016 DNC as well as at a Biden fundraiser last December.

“ Firework ” by Katy Perry. The 2010 song was blasted at the 2016 DNC, after Hillary Clinton accepted her nomination. Perry, whose song “Roar” was used in a Clinton campaign ad, also performed at the DNC that year. After Harris kicked off her presidential campaign in July, Perry showed her support for the Vice President by sharing a video set to the tune of her new song “Woman’s World.”

“ Mr. Brightside ” by rock band The Killers, which was formed in Las Vegas. The band led by Mormon frontman Brandon Flowers said in 2012 during the presidential election contest between Mitt Romney and Obama that they were “neutral,” but the band became more politically outspoken over time, releasing an anti-Trump anthem in 2019 called “Land of the Free” and saying they felt “ less anxious ” after Biden was elected in 2020. This week, the Killers are playing a private concert for DNC guests in Chicago.

New Hampshire

“ Don’t Stop Believin’ ” by San Francisco-formed band Journey. Journey guitarist Neal Schon served bandmate Jonathan Cain with a cease and desist letter after Cain played the song for Trump at Mar-a-Lago. “Journey is not, and should not, be political,” the letter said at the time. It’s unclear if the DNC got approval to play the song on Tuesday.

“ Born in the USA ” by Bruce Springsteen, a proud native of New Jersey and outspoken Democrat .

“ Confident ” by Demi Lovato. The Albuquerque-born singer, a prominent critic of Trump, previously performed the song at the 2016 DNC and has endorsed Harris for the presidency.

“ Empire State of Mind ” by Jay Z and Alicia Keys. The song, written as an homage to New York City has been embraced as one of the city’s most popular anthems. Its singers, Jay Z and Keys, are also known for their support of Democratic campaigns and have performed at past DNCs. Jay Z has appeared at rallies for Obama and Clinton, while Keys joined Harris on the campaign trail in 2020.

North Carolina

“ Raise Up ” by North Carolina-born rapper Petey Pablo.

North Dakota

“ Girl on Fire ” by Alicia Keys. (The song’s connection to the state is unclear.)

Northern Mariana Islands

“ Ain’t No Mountain High Enough ” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. While the artists have no apparent connection to the territory, the Mariana Islands —of which the U.S. commonwealth is a part of—are the highest slopes of a massive undersea mountain range.

“ Green Light ” by Ohio-born singer John Legend, who has a history of supporting Democratic candidates and has said that his daughter looks up to Harris. Legend is also set to perform at a private event in Chicago during the DNC.

“ Ain’t Going Down (Till the Sun Comes Up) ” by Tulsa native Garth Brooks. Brooks, who has identified as Republican, has performed at the inaugurations of Presidents from both parties, including Biden’s in 2021—though he said at the time his appearance was “not a political statement” but “a statement of unity.”

“ Float On ” by Portland-based rock band Modest Mouse. The band members’ political leanings are unclear, though frontman Isaac Brock once said that “Float On” was written as a response to the “bad news” of that era, including George W. Bush’s presidency.

Pennsylvania

“ Motownphilly ” by Philadelphia’s Boyz II Men, who previously performed at the 2016 DNC, and “ Black and Yellow” by Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa, who has praised President Biden’s approach to marijuana criminalization reform.

Puerto Rico

“ Despacito ” by Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. The 2017 hit song was credited for boosting the U.S. territory’s tourism. In 2020, Fonsi rallied Latino voters to support Biden for the presidency, while Daddy Yankee controversially supported Republican presidential nominee John McCain in 2008 and performed at that year’s RNC.

Rhode Island

“ Shake It Off ” by Taylor Swift, who owns a multimillion-dollar mansion in Rhode Island. The TIME Person of the Year previously slammed Trump and backed the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020. Swift has not yet endorsed a candidate for the November election, but rumors are swirling that she may endorse Harris closer to the election date.

South Carolina

“ Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine ” by singer James Brown, who was born in Barnwell, S.C..

South Dakota

“ What I Like About You ” by the Romantics. (The reason for the song choice is unclear.)

“ 9 to 5 ” by Nashville-based country singer Dolly Parton, who has famously stayed away from revealing her personal politics.

“ Texas Hold ’Em ” by Beyoncé. Like her husband Jay Z, the Houston-born singer has been a prominent supporter of Democratic candidates. She sang the national anthem during Obama’s inauguration in 2013, performed at a concert for Clinton in 2016, and endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket in 2020.

While she has not officially endorsed Harris, Beyoncé has apparently allowed the Vice President to use her song “Freedom” throughout the presidential campaign.

“ Animal ” by Utah rock band Neon Trees. The band has not commented publicly on their political leanings, but they performed a Rock the Vote show ahead of a televised debate between Obama and Romney in 2012.

“ Stick Season ” by Vermont native Noah Kahan, who has said the song is “very clearly about Vermont.” Kahan has mostly refrained from commenting on politics but posted in 2020, after Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders suspended his presidential primary campaign, that he “would have loved to be a citizen in Bernie’s America.” ( Sanders spoke at the DNC on Tuesday in support of Harris.)

U.S. Virgin Islands

“ VI to the Bone ,” rapper Mic Love’s ode to his native Virgin Islands.

“ The Way I Are ” by Timbaland. In 2020, the producer and rapper born in Norfolk, Va., was among the public figures who called on then presidential candidate Biden to select a Black woman as his running mate.

“ Can’t Hold Us ” by Seattle hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Macklemore has long been a vocal critic of Trump, and in May he slammed Biden in a pro-Palestinian protest song condemning Israel’s war in Gaza.

West Virginia

“ Take Me Home, Country Roads ” by late country singer John Denver, who was a prominent Democrat. The song—which mentions the state, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Shenandoah River—has become synonymous with West Virginia, though its writers had never been to the state when they penned the lyrics.

“ Jump Around ” by hip-hop trio House of Pain. The 1992 hit song has been linked to the state’s college football fans, who have made jumping around to it a tradition. House of Pain’s frontman Everlast threatened to send Trump a cease-and-desist letter in 2016 for using “Jump Around” at his campaign events.

“ I Gotta Feeling ” by the Black Eyed Peas, whose connection to the state of Wyoming is unclear, though the group and its members—including will.i.am and Fergie —have been critical of Trump and supportive of Democrats.

“ Kiss ” and “ 1999 ” by Prince, who was born in Minneapolis. The late singer performed alongside Stevie Wonder at the White House for the Obamas and their friends in 2015.

A mash-up of tracks from some of the most prominent West Coast rappers: “ The Next Episode ” by Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg, the latter of whom performed at a party for Democratic donors in 2017 and authorized his song “Drop It Like It’s Hot” to be used in a 2020 Democratic ad encouraging voting;  two tracks by Compton native Kendrick Lamar, “ Alright ” and “ Not Like Us ”; and “ California Love ” by 2Pac and Dr. Dre, which closed out the roll call, in keeping with tradition for the presidential nominee’s home state to go last.

The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

Kit Dillon

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

A person stands by a wooden fence outdoors while wearing the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, our larger pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

travel choice opening times

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

10 Tips For For Booking The Cheapest Flight Any Time You Travel

  • Booking flights as early as possible ensures the lowest price and better seat options, and allows for early booking of other aspects of the trip.
  • Take advantage of the 24-hour cancelation rule to make impulsive decisions and explore different travel parameters.
  • Avoid weekends and peak season to find cheaper tickets and to enjoy cheaper hotels and activities, plus less crowded attractions.

Planning a trip? Airfare is usually the largest expense of any trip, and this would mean spending some time towards making the most affordable and valuable choice on the destination and/or airline ticket. Everybody wants handy tips to find cheap flights to help cut down on travel costs, and today, multiple tools and platforms provide adequate opportunities to do just that.

Access to correct information is key to finding cheap airline tickets, and there's plenty of incorrect information out there on tricks and sites to find cheap airfare and discount flights. It's hard to tell the right from the wrong. So, then, what is the secret to finding cheap flights? Here are some simple tips for booking the cheapest flights possible at any given moment. The best way to use this information is a mix-n-match of these tips.

Related: 10 Tips For Booking Flights Before Holiday Travel Season Starts

Book Flights As Early As Possible

Typically, airline ticket prices tend to jump in the last 2–3 weeks before the date of departure, which is not usually one of the best times to book cheap flights . Booking as soon as possible is one of the simplest ways of ensuring the lowest price for that flight. An ideal period to book a flight is anytime between 90 and 30 days before the date of departure.

Many search engines have a price predictor algorithm that analyzes historical price trends to help predict if ticket prices will increase, decrease, or remain the same. These predictions cannot be relied on for 100% accuracy, but they are usually spot on as they crunch the numbers on thousands of different routes and flights over months and years of data.

Booking Early Advantages

  • Booking early also ensures finding a better seat for the same price. For example, a seat near the restroom versus a seat in the middle of the aisle.
  • Booking flights early allows booking of hotels, tours, and other aspects of the trip early as well

Use The 24-Hour Airline Rule To An Advantage

The 24-hour cancelation rule must be taken advantage of. It is the best reason to make impulsive decisions. The U.S. government has a federal law that requires any airline in the world to provide a full, 100% refund for any flight that touches US soil if canceled within 24 hours of booking. As a result of this, bookings done on most online platforms can be canceled within 24 hours of booking.

This 24-hour rule can sometimes be used to book ridiculously cheap flights to unplanned destinations. After that, all other travel parameters can be explored in terms of leave application, travel partners, budget-friendliness of the location, etc. If it's not working out, the ticket can always be canceled within the first 24 hours of booking.

24-Hour Cancelation Advantages

  • No wasting of time to see whether the dates or destination align with the holiday or not. If not, the ticket can always be canceled.
  • Sometimes, a great deal can be a great motivator to plan a vacation

Airlines are only required to offer a free cancelation window for flights booked at least seven days before departure.

Avoid Weekends And Peak Season

Simple economics dictates that higher demand fuels higher prices. Weekends and peak seasons will always drive higher airline ticket prices. At these times, it is smart to choose any other dates than those that fall within peak season or weekends.

Sometimes, airlines run high discounts just after the holiday. For example, many people want to go on long weekend vacations . Therefore, air travel over long weekends usually increases substantially, and airlines make a great profit from these flights despite the exorbitant prices, but the same destinations tend to offer great discounts the very next day as most people have finished traveling and flights are more likely to go undersold.

Also, mid-week flights tend to be cheaper rather than weekends for the same reason.

Advantages Of Avoiding Peak Season Tickets

  • Hotels, Tours, and other expenses that get affected by demand are also cheaper during off-season travel
  • Peak season on weekends also means more crowds for all activities like beaches, shows, rides, and even simple things like an evening walk on the promenade.

Book Flights First And The Rest Of The Trip Later

One of the most common reasons why people find airfare to be expensive is that they tend to plan and finalize all other expenses before buying the airline ticket. Once the holiday dates, hotel bookings, amusement park tickets, etc., have been finalized, then it is very difficult to avoid spending whatever the price of the air ticket is.

Instead, reverse the entire sequence of the process! Since airfare is usually the largest expense of any trip, it should be done first after careful analysis and choosing the best option in terms of price, destination, date, etc.

Advantages Of Booking Flights First

  • If no other reservations are already made, then finding a cheap airline ticket is very easy since price will be the only search criteria.
  • There's a good chance that a cheap ticket is to someplace where it is off-season, and hence, all other expenses, such as hotels, rides, parks, etc., will also be cheaper.

Book Two One-way Tickets

Many times, the airline looks at a return ticket as a captive customer who has to return to the original destination. This is based on strong historical data of this being quite factual. In this case, return tickets turn out to be more expensive per leg compared to separate one-way tickets.

Travelers should always search both options without assuming either one is necessarily true every time. Booking two separate one-way tickets also allows much more flexibility and flight choices for the same trip while also making it easier to modify either one ticket at any given time.

Advantages Of Booking Two One-Way Flight Tickets

  • They can be a cheaper option at times, but travelers must search for both options for each flight.
  • In the case of calculating frequent flyer miles, booking two one-way trips is also likely to add more points to the member rather than a round-trip booking.

Set An Airfare Alert

Fare alerts can be a great tool in a traveler's toolkit. Few airlines like Qantas and Virgin Australia allow setting up alerts for when airfares drop for a selected route or a specific flight. If the choice of airline is not specific, aggregators like Skyscanner and Kayak also offer this functionality.

It makes planning a trip for any particular time of the year that much easier by choosing a desired route and/or flight and waiting for the notification alert for cheap tickets. However, it must be noted that the price at which the decision to buy is made doesn't guarantee that the price will not fall further. In the end, it is the traveler's choice, at which point the transaction will happen.

Advantages Of Setting Airfare Alerts

  • Airfare alerts can be set up for specific ticket prices. For example, a fare alert for any Los Angeles - New York flight with a price below $50.
  • Multiple alerts for a range of flights can be set up, which keeps travel options open for choosing whichever flight/route/destination gives the best price.

Check Out Budget Airlines

Many of the small, budget airlines don't figure in many of the online travel portals. These airlines depend on the spill-over lot of passengers that are typically flying shorter distances. Their planes, routes, and luxury facilities are limited, so these airlines will usually offer good deals (sometimes even last-minute deals) for their routes.

Check out their websites directly to see any deals or offers they might be running. There are many budget airlines around the world , and at least one budget airline services just about every airport on the planet these days. Using them might mean having to forgo some of those in-flight luxuries like meals and entertainment, but if saving money is a priority, then these are worth looking at.

Advantages Of Budget Airlines

  • Their prices are inherently lower since they offer fewer entertainment options, less luxury, and even fewer food choices.

Don't Search For Flights By Destination

For those wondering how to find the cheapest flights, ditching the usual methods of flight searching is required in some instances. The typical process of booking an airline ticket is searching for the cheapest ticket for the intended destination. The results would be the cheapest tickets for that destination. What if this process is reversed?

Switch the way flights are searched and make the destination "Everywhere" while searching for cheap tickets. Enter dates and departure airport and leave the destination open. Instantly, the result is a list of places that are cheaper to reach. For example, someone in the US looking to fly abroad can use this method to see the cheapest destinations to fly from in the US .

Advantages Of Searching With No Destination

  • Insight into the cheapest places to fly from the given departure point on a given date
  • Combining this with the advantage of the 24-hour airline rule gives a great set of ticket options to buy in advance without the pressure of losing money.

Search With Flexible Dates And Routes

Although this might not be a possibility every time, it is an option that can be explored when looking for ways to get the cheapest flights. Being flexible with the route can help with even more savings, as well as open destinations.

Everyone wants to fly nonstop as much as possible. It's obvious. It is the fastest way to get anywhere. And while it may seem counter-intuitive, sometimes taking an extra stop on the way to the final destination can pay off with savings so big that it's worth it – especially while crossing an ocean.

For example, let's say a nonstop flight from New York-John F. Kennedy (JFK) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) will cost $1000 or more. But by opening the search up to one-stop flights, suddenly, there is a flight for $430 that makes a stop in Reykjavik-Iceland (KEF) on the way to Paris. Now that's a saving worth spending an extra few hours in the air.

Advantages Of Flexible Flight Dates And Routes

  • It might not happen every time, but at times, there is a chance of great deals and/or discounted fares.
  • It is possible to find an alternate route that just might inspire an interesting destination stop, which was not part of the initial plan.

Subscribe To A Mailing List

Another one of the best ways to find cheap flight tickets is by becoming a mailing list member. Just like setting airfare alerts, airlines and travel portals send out regular emails to subscribers about discounts and deals offered.

Regular travelers are usually already part of these mailing lists, and anyone who is looking to travel is encouraged to sign up for these subscription emails. Unlike airfare alerts, the subscription mails are more generic and broad-based, but through the year, they'll always have some offers for everyone

Advantages Of Flight Mailing List Subscriptions

  • Subscription mailers will have regular updates about flight deals and offers that are running at any given time.
  • Mails can be forwarded so deals can be shared, and the airline is only too happy. It's a win-win for everyone.

History of Voronezh

Foundation of voronezh.

The first mention of Voronezh dates back to 1177 in connection with the battle of the Vladimir and Ryazan princes and the escape of Yaropolk of Ryazan to “Voronozh”. Some historians suggest, based on fragments of these chronicles, that Voronezh (Voronozh) existed as a settlement back in the 12th century. Other historians believe that the chronicle meant only the Voronezh River.

The second, very significant, mention of Voronezh in the chronicles refers to 1237, when the conquest of the Russian principalities by Khan Batu began during the Western campaign of the Mongols. The Russian princes decided to give the first battle to the enemies “and came out against them in Voronozh”, but were defeated. Again, the word “Voronozh” probably means the Voronezh River, not a settlement.

The Tsar’s decree on the foundation of Voronezh has not yet been found. The archive has an order of the boyar Nikita Yuriev from 1586 on the reorganization of the guard service on the southern outskirts of the Moscow state and on the construction of two fortified settlements: Livny and Voronezh. Thus, the official year of the foundation of Voronezh is 1586.

Located on the trade route at the confluence of the Voronezh River with the Don, Voronezh could not remain an exclusively military town for a long time. In 1615, its population was about 7 thousand people. From the middle of the 17th century, Russian and foreign ambassadors to the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the Caucasus travelled through Voronezh. It became part of the Belgorod line - fortifications that protected the Russian state from the raids of the Crimean Tatars until the end of the 17th century.

More Historical Facts…

Voronezh - the cradle of the Russian navy

In 1695, during the first Azov campaign, Russian troops were unable to capture the fortress of Azov standing on the bank of the Don River, several kilometers from its confluence with the Sea of Azov. The siege was unsuccessful, as the Ottoman garrison in the fortress received support from the sea.

Therefore, Peter I decided to start building a fleet. Voronezh was chosen for this because of its strategic position on the Voronezh River flowing into the Don. Secondly, there were forests near the town that could be used as building materials. Thirdly, the residents of Voronezh had experience in the construction and use of river vessels.

In 1696, as a result of the second campaign, the Azov fortress was taken by Russian troops. The Russian fleet prevented the supply of people, ammunition and food to the fortress. From 1696 to 1711, about 215 ships were built in Voronezh, including the ship “Goto Predestinatsia” (The Providence of God) - the first Russian ship of the line.

In Voronezh, the organizational foundations for the subsequent construction of the Russian fleets in the Baltic and Black Seas were laid. The first Admiralty in Russia was also created here. However, the military shipyard in Voronezh did not exist for long due to the gradual shallowing of the rivers.

Voronezh in the 18th-19th centuries

In 1709, Voronezh became part of the Azov Governorate. In 1711, its center moved from Azov to Tambov, and in 1715 - to Voronezh. In 1725, after the death of the first Russian emperor, the region was renamed into the Voronezh Governorate. In 1745, the first educational institution was opened - the theological seminary (closed in 1918, reopened in 1993).

In 1748, Voronezh was badly damaged by fire. Almost the entire center, which was located on the bank of the river, burned down. After that, the center of Voronezh again began to be located in the place of today’s Universitetskaya Square.

In 1774, after another big fire, Catherine II approved the general plan for the regular development of Voronezh. In the second half of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries, Voronezh was one of the centers of the Russian cloth industry.

In 1781, the coat of arms of Voronezh was approved: “The shield is divided in two, in the upper part in a golden field - a two-headed black eagle, and in the lower part in a red field - an overturned jar, from which the Voronezh River flows”.

In 1863, according to the census of residents, Voronezh numbered 38,672 people (the 12th largest city in the Russian Empire). The first public library was opened in 1864. In 1868, Voronezh was connected by railway with Moscow, in 1871 - with Rostov-on-Don, in 1894 - with Kursk.

Voronezh in the first half of the 20th century

In 1913, the first secular higher educational institution in Voronezh was opened - the Agricultural Institute named after Peter the Great (Voronezh State Agrarian University named after Emperor Peter I). In 1914, the population of the city was 93,700 people. During the First World War, reserve military units were formed in Voronezh, defense enterprises from the western regions of the Russian Empire were evacuated here.

In 1928, Voronezh became the center of the Central Black Earth Oblast. And after its liquidation in 1934, it remained the center of Voronezh Oblast. On August 2, 1930, the first Soviet airborne assault was parachuted two kilometers from Voronezh. Today, August 2 is celebrated as the birthday of the Russian airborne forces.

In 1932, two large factories were built on the left bank - aviation and rubber. One of the most important industrial and scientific complexes in the USSR was formed in the city. Many types of aircraft produced in Voronezh began to enter the Red Air Force several years before the outbreak of World War II. In 1939, the population of Voronezh was 326,932 people.

In October-November 1941, during the Second World War, most of the large enterprises were evacuated to the east. From July 7, 1942 to January 25, 1943, the right-bank part of Voronezh, being under German occupation, suffered significant damage, about 18 thousand houses were destroyed (92% of all residential buildings). The active defense of Voronezh helped the Red Army to withstand and win in Stalingrad.

In November 1945, it was decided to prioritize the restoration of 15 oldest Russian cities, including Voronezh. In the late 1940s, the restoration of industrial enterprises was completed, by the mid-1950s - residential and public buildings. In 1956, the population of the city exceeded 400 thousand people.

Voronezh in the second half of the 20th century

In 1968, the first serial Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 was produced at the Voronezh Aviation Plant; in October 1977 - the first Soviet airbus (wide-body aircraft) Il-86. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was built, which became the largest in the region.

In 1983, about 6 km from the city limits, the construction of the Voronezh nuclear power plant for heat supply began. In 1990, under the influence of the Chernobyl disaster, it was suspended on the basis of a referendum held among Voronezh residents. The station, which was approximately 65% completed, was mothballed. In 2020, work began on its dismantling. In 1989, the population of Voronezh was about 887,000.

In the 1990s, in connection with the collapse of the USSR, the largest industrial enterprises of Voronezh were on the verge of bankruptcy due to a sharp decline in defense orders and the breakdown of existing economic ties. A lot of churches were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church; their restoration was carried out.

In the early and mid-1990s, agreements on twinning relations were concluded between Voronezh and the cities of Charlotte (USA), Chongqing (China) and Sliven (Bulgaria).

In 2008, Voronezh was awarded the title “City of Military Glory”. In 2009, a new Cathedral of the Annunciation, the third largest Orthodox church in Russia, was built to replace the destroyed one. On December 17, 2012, a millionth resident was born in the city, which made Voronezh the 15th city in Russia with a population of over 1 million.

Voronezh - Features

Initially, the city stood on the banks of the Voronezh River. In the 1970s, it was turned into a reservoir - one of the largest reservoirs in the world located entirely within the city. The Voronezh reservoir divides the city into two parts. Its center, cultural institutions, embankments, the best establishments, and the most prestigious districts are located on the right bank. On the left bank there are industrial enterprises, residential areas, and one beautiful park. The two banks are connected by three bridges: the longest of them is Severnyy Bridge (2 km long).

There are several versions of the origin of the name of the Voronezh River after which the city of Voronezh was named. Most likely it comes from the word “voron” (“raven”) or “voronoy” (black) reflecting the dark color of the water in the Voronezh River. The City Day of Voronezh is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September.

Voronezh is located in a temperate zone. Winter is moderately frosty with a permanent snow cover that forms in December. Quite often there are thaws accompanied by rains (especially in December). Also there are often drops in temperature below minus 20 degrees Celsius, which can last up to a week or more.

Summer is warm, even hot (especially July and the first half of August), in some years - rainy, in some years - dry. Autumn is mild and rainy. The Voronezh reservoir is covered with ice in late November - early December. Spring ice drift lasts from March to April. The average temperature in January is minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22.7 degrees Celsius.

Voronezh is the economic center of the Voronezh region and one of the largest economic centers in Russia. The leading sectors of the economy are food, chemical, radio-electronic industries, mechanical engineering and retail trade. The largest enterprises of Voronezh are Voronezh Joint-Stock Aircraft Building Company, Voronezh Mechanical Plant, Voronezh Ceramic Plant, Carriage Repair Plant named after V.I. Thalmann.

This city is a major transport hub, the transport system of which consists of air, rail and road transport systems. The Peter the Great Voronezh International Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Samara, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don. Public transport is represented by mini-buses, buses and trolleybuses.

Voronezh is worth visiting not only for its interesting museums, beautiful parks and picturesque squares. Here you can also see funny monuments to animals - heroes of famous literary works, replicas of the first ships of the Russian navy, unusual buildings in the Art Nouveau and Gothic style of the late 19th-20th centuries.

There are a lot of traditional Russian churches, theaters, and former merchant mansions in Voronezh that catch the eye with their noble and elegant appearance. Also, tourists should pay attention to the monuments perpetuating the image of the heroes of the Second World War. The Voronezh Sea, a huge reservoir stretching for tens of kilometers, is of no less interest.
