Mode of journey – By taxi -90 km – On foot – 4 km

Altitude – Khathiyan camp – 2325 Meter

Night stay – Our Campsite – on a twin share basis

The vehicles are arranged from Dehradun Railway Station and the journey starts from there.

Cover 90 kms by going through some fable tourist attractions like Mussoorie and Kempty Fall by following the route through Nainbagh towards Nag Tibba road. Three routes lead to Nag Tibba but the route via Pantwari village is the shortest one.

Reach mini-market, enter the welcome gate and start trekking on the cemented trail.

Little ahead is a small temple of Nag Devta. Now, after 5 minutes of the hike, the trail changes to a rocky one full of loose rocks. As you go higher the Pantwari village and the farmlands are visible below.

The connecting Nag Tibba ridge lies in front. Climb the hill and reach a water point, the water here is safe to drink. Continue trekking and great views which the trail offers are a feast for the eyes. Now, enter the “Pravesh Dwar”; “Welcome Gate” of Nag Tibba and start ascending through the forest section.

Rhododendrons (Burans) are found in abundance here and its squash is very famous because it is very helpful in treating blood pressure. The zig-zag trail is steep with many loose rocks.

There are many other short cuts that look alike and lead to the same place but do not go for these shortcuts and leave the group because there is a chance to get lost in the woods.

Today wake up early because the distance is long, have light breakfast and get ready for the adventure.

Go through the densely forested area, in winter trekking here gets tough because the heavy snow makes the trail hard to identify. Between your gradual walk cross some steep ascents and in 1 hour you can reach the Nag Tibba Base Camp.

It is a wide clearing and a temple is located there dedicated to Serpent God “Nag Devta”. It is worshipped by the local villagers for protection of their cattle and a “Bhagwat” is held here in which “Chief Minister is invited and almost 10,000 people attend it every year.

Now, the climb to Nag Tibba top is 1.5 km from Base Camp which is very steep through the thick forest cover. The snow makes the climb challenging in winters.

The trail is straight and you can reach the summit in 1 or 1 and a half hour depending upon the conditions. The highest point is called Nag Tibba, there is a flag “Jhandi” on the top.

Get tremendous views of high Himalayan ranges i.e. Swargarohini, Bandar pooch, Srikanta, Kala Naag, Gangotri and snow peaks of Changabang.

Himalayan Hikers are not only professional but care for their trekkers like family. Very safe and personal attention given to each one of us. Food and hygiene is very good. Had a wonderful trip to Phulara ridge last week. This is my 5th trek with them. I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants to trek in the Indian HIMALAYAS.

“I was a solo trekker so I joined fixed departure on 10 December 2018. The whole group was so friendly that I forgot I did not know them from before it was all because of the leader and team. When I checked in hotel Mr kuldeep Singh ji introduced the hotel staff, kitchen staff and the people who were going along with us on the trek. We all got familiar and we all were very comfortable with each other. The same schedule was being followed as we were told and everything went very smooth. Since then I have trekked with them many times and planning more” –

Team Himalayan Hikers is exceptional. The Nag Tibba trip was surreal for us as we were there during peak snowfall. Though the trek during this time was definitely not easy and was quite challenging, the guides provided us with support wherever needed. I am so happy I took this trek and experienced something life changing

Dehradun to Pantwari village and trek to Camp 1

We will pick you up from Dehradun railway station around 6 in the morning, starting on a 4 hour uphill drive to village Panthwari at 4,650 ft. The road passes through a Mussoorie-the queen of hills, to Kempty Falls, and with the Yumuna river trailing our side on to Nainbagh from where we turn on the Nag TIbba road, reaching Panthwari at around 12 pm. We will be stopping for a light breakfast on the way. Also, Mussoorie is the last stop where an ATM is available.

At Panthwari, we will have a filling lunch and after some rest, head off for the trek. The hike begins at the end of a motorable road till which we will be reached by car. Beginning on a well defined cemented path, we will find our way to a rocky trail. You will find 2-3 water points on this way, the first of which comes after 15 minutes in the trek- a reservoir of stream water. Fill your bottles from here and move ahead.

30 minutes into the trek, you will come across a cluster of thatched roofed huts- a small village on cliffs, lined with terrace farmlands. During the harvest seasons, you will find these stretches in a wave of different shades in green and yellow. The locality of Panthwari can be seen lying down far below. Before reaching the ridge connecting the Panthwari side of the hills with Nag Tibba, you will come across ‘Goat Village’—an interesting eco-tourism resort.

After a while, the rocky mountain trail enters a thicket of oak and rhododendron and the ascent curve almost levels out. The next landmark on the trek is an isolated hut by a stretch of farmland, from where our campsite will be another 5 minutes walk. The campsite is a small clearing with the forests for a background and the rolling abyss out front. To find clouds like smoke rising from beneath in the gulf just in front of the campsite ledge is a mesmeric experience.

How-Nag-Tibba-Look-On-Day-1

Camp 1 to Nag Tibba top and return to Pantwari Village and drive to Dehradun

Day 2 needs to start very early as it’s a long day ahead. After catching a quick breakfast, finishing by 5:00 am, we start on the hike to the top. A trail on the right of the campsite continues through a thick forest cover. With snow enveloping the path in the winters, it becomes a little challenging to locate the trail which is otherwise well defined. Within 20-30 minutes from the camp on the forest trail, you will reach two open patches of land, clearings by the forest fringes. From this point on, the trek is almost a level walk on very gentle undulations.

The Nag Tibba temple marking the base of the Nag Tibba hill is situated on the third clearing that we find on this trail. From here, on a clear sky day, the Garhwal Himalaya peaks meet the eye.

The trek continues from here into the forest on a steep incline, likely to be submerged in snow in the winter. This part of the trek really raises the bar for challenge and makes for a swashbuckling summit experience. Close to the top, the trail will turn through a ridge and finally take you to the flag marking Nag Tabbi jhandi, or summit. One possible route of descending from here is a trail passing through Devalsari village, visible on the reverse side of the mountain.

The view from the summit brings us face to face with the Garhwal Himalaya’s most amazing. The canvas of the sky lights up with ice capped ranges of Bandarpoonch, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Kala Nag, and more.

If the trek runs according to schedule, you can spend some time on the top, then make the way down by the same trail. Lunch will be at the camp. Panthwari will be reached by sundown and a 4-5 hour drive from there will take you to Dehradun from where you can arrange an overnight journey.

If this two-day weekend trek schedule is to your liking, check out our Binsar trek.

Once you have reached Dehradun, TTH will manage the rest of your travel arrangements, if you have opted for TTH's pick-up service, you can select this option during the booking process by adding it as an add-on.

Options to reach Dehradun - First, you can arrive at Delhi, Dehradun airport or Chandigarh. The journey from these locations to Dehradun is explained below.

Chandigarh to Dehradun - 220km | 5hr

The distance from the Dehradun Bus Stand (ISBT) to the Railway Station is 6 km, without traffic, it will take 15 minutes.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

How to prepare a child for a high altitude trek?

Physical Fitness: Ensure your child is physically fit. Engage them in regular exercise, outdoor activities, and hikes to build stamina and endurance. Hydration: Emphasize the importance of staying hydrated at high altitudes. Encourage your child to drink water regularly, even if they don't feel thirsty. Proper Nutrition: Provide a well-balanced diet with sufficient carbohydrates for energy and foods rich in iron to prevent altitude sickness. Adequate Sleep: Ensure your child gets enough sleep in the days leading up to the trek. Quality rest is crucial for altitude adaptation. Educate on Altitude Sickness: Teach your child about the symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, nausea, and dizziness. Encourage them to communicate any discomfort immediately. Appropriate Clothing and Gear: Dress your child in layers to adjust to changing temperatures. Ensure they have appropriate trekking gear, including sturdy footwear. Positive Mindset: Foster a positive mindset. Encourage your child, and let them know it's okay to take breaks when needed. Medical Check-Up: Schedule a medical check-up before the trek to ensure your child is fit for high-altitude activities. Consult with a healthcare professional about any potential health concerns.

How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail:  Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert:  If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

Can a beginner choose a tough trek?

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

How do I manage the negative temperatures on the trek at higher camps? Do I need special jackets?

Layer Up From Head To Toe Eat Full Meals, never sleep empty stomach You can keep warmee (if you’re more susceptible to cold). Use sleeping bag in right way and don’t leave free space in sleeping bag.

For upper body – Thermal layer – T-shirt (full-sleeves) – Fleece T-shirt (for extreme colds) – Fleece layer – Thick Jacket/Down Jacket – Waterproof or Windproof layer (outermost layer, when it is snowing or raining) - For Lower Body – Thermal layer – Hiking pants (normal) or Winter hiking pants

Based on how warm you feel you can skip any of the above layers. Your outer later should be windproof since it is windy at high altitude. The idea behind layering is that the more insulation you have the less cold you feel, and instead of wearing a very thick jacket if you wear multiple layers, your body will be better insulated against the cold.

What happens if some members of the team need to turn back before the summit?

No one is forced to go on. There is always enough staff to split the party according to need and regroup later at the camp. Most people have no trouble reaching the highest campsite. If some members decide not to climb the final distance they can wait for the climbers to come back down the same way or take a lateral path to the descent route.

Nag Tibba Camping

Since the days when religion and worship were a response to a way of life rather than a reason for existence; snakes have been given a cult status. There are many snake god myths and symbols associated with them, such as Sheshnag (Vishnu’s resting couch), Anantnag (the endless snake), Kaliya (Krishna’s dance), Vasuki (ocean churning), Padmanabha (guardian snake, particularly in southern India), Manasa Devi (snake goddess), and so on.

He is the defender of the livestock and sheep of the peasantry in this highland region. Farm animals are their most valuable possessions, and Nag Devta serves as their guardian.

Nag Tibba Trek - A Complete Travel Guide

It's certainly said that -

The best view comes after the most strenuous climb.

Mountains are the beginning and the end of the natural panorama.

One of the best destinations to escape from the reality of life is the mountains. To experience such a holiday, we are here to plan your next sought trip to the famous Nag Tibba trek in Uttarakhand. Considering an ideal destination for a mountain trek, Nag Tibba is the most famous and most visited trek.

About Nag Tibba

Nag Tibba is located in the state of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3022 meters, making it one of the highest peaks in the lower Himalayan range. Located very near to the Hill Station, Mussoorie, the Nag Tibba trek is very prominent and the most alluring trek among visitors and nature lovers especially those who love adventures.

The name Nag Tibba is assured by the local Garhwali articulation, Nagg means snake and Tibba means peak or hill.  According to an old mythological tale, Nag Tibba hill is actually the residence of ' Naag Devta '. The trek is also called by the name  Serpent's Trek . The villagers believe this a holy place and come to prey here.

The Nag Tibba trek is one of the most famous treks in Uttarakhand, not only for the scenic beauty but also for the famous Shiva Temple at the top of Nag Tibba hill. If you are visiting in the winter, you can clearly witness the incredible and unbelievably beautiful snow-covered hills of Kedarnath, Bandarpoonch, Kala Naag, and many more.

My journey to this trek was fascinating and definitely a rememberable one.

It was a sudden idea while deciding with friends what are we doing for the New Year celebration. It clicked out of nowhere to celebrate this new year not with loud music and partying but in peace and serenity with close friends. We planned to celebrate the New Year at the top of a mountain hill. Yes, we started our journey in the month of Dec on the 29th night and reached the top of Nag Tibba mountain hill exactly on new year's eve to celebrate New Year with a bonfire along with friends.

I must say this was one of the best New year celebrations we had!

What is the best time to visit Nag Tibba?

The best time to visit Nag Tibba and enjoy this trekking is the winter season i.e. from October to March as the routes are covered in snow, forming an incredible and beautiful panorama. Though the temperature goes very down and the night would be freezy. You have to be cautious about clothes and winter wear. Carry enough woolen clothes. But out of all, you will find peace and beauty of nature in the outstanding snow-covered captivating hills which are worth watching. If you are lucky enough, you may experience mesmerizing snowfall during winters.

The summer season i.e. from April to June  is also a very suitable time to plan a Nag Tibba trekking trip. You will experience breezy and a perfect pleasant climate for trekking. The dense forests will provide you enough shade while trekking. Woolen clothes will not be required if you are traveling in summer.

The monsoons from July to October are not a very good idea to plan a trekking trip. Although you will get to see heavenly greenery and amazing scenery to view, the monsoon means slippery and muddy track which is not a good idea for trekking.

How to reach Nag Tibba?

The main journey of Nag Tibba starts from Mussoorie . Being the queen of the hill stations, Mussoorie alone has a lot to explore. You can reach Mussoorie and spend a day here before starting your trek to Nag Tibba. You can reach here using the below options of transport:

Airway:  Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport from Mussoorie which is about 60 kilometers. You can easily find the cabs/taxi till Mussoorie as the airport is very well connected.

Railway: The nearest railway station to Mussoorie is the Dehradun railway station, around 36 kilometers. You can easily find the trains like Shatabdi Express or Mussoorie Express. This is the most convenient way to reach here.

Roadway: Another convenient option to reach Mussoorie is via Bus. Mussoorie is well connected with roadway routes. One can take a roadway route from Delhi to Mussoorie as luxury Volvo buses are easily available from Delhi which take around 5 to 6 hours. You can catch an overnight sleeper bus from Delhi and reach here by morning.

Since we were traveling via Delhi, we took an overnight luxury sleeper bus from Delhi and reached Mussoorie early in the morning around 6AM.

Where to stay in Mussoorie and Nag Tibba?

A day stay at mussoorie:.

Mussoorie, being a ravishing hill station and the center point of our trek to Nag Tibba, planning a day stay here is not at all a bad idea!

We reached Mussoorie in the morning via overnight bus from Delhi. We instantly scanned a few hotels near mall road and selected a fine one to freshen up and relax.

If you are planning for this trip, you can have a day's stay in Mussoorie or Dehradun for some relaxation before trekking. You can utilize a day to explore the place. There are plenty of options, good hotels, and resorts to stay in. You can do prior booking before reaching to reduce the last moment stress.

Stay at Nag Tibba Base Camp:

After checking out from Mussoorie hotel the next day morning, Booked a local cab from Mall Road and reached Pantwari Village.

After reaching the Pantwari village you will find a couple of trek operators who offer Trek camps, guides mules, and guide service. I would recommend booking it in advance or else you might face an availability issue.

What is the best trekking route to Nag Tibba?

The best trekking route for Nag Tibba is via Mussoorie.

Trek Route 1 :   The easiest and the most used way to reach Nag Tibba basecamp and Summit is from Pantwari Village.

Mussoorie or Dehradun -->Pantwari Village --> Nag Tibba Base Camp --> Summit
Distance: 8 kilometers

Trek Route 2 :   The second trekking route to reach Nag Tibba basecamp and Summit is from Develsari Village. This route is rarely used by travelers as it passes through thick deodar forest and is a bit far as compared to route 1.

Mussoorie --> Develsari Village --> Nag Tibba Base Camp --> Summit
Distance: 13 kilometers

Day-wise Itinerary to Nag Tibba

Day 1: Reach Mussoorie -> Breakfast in Kalsang -> Kempty Falls -> Visit Mall Road -> Dinner in Little LLama Cafe

Day 2: Reach Panthvari Village -> Breakfast -> Start Trek -> Reach Base Camp -> Enjoy Sunset and Photography

Day 3: Wake up early -> Trek to Summit -> Visit Nag Devta Temple -> Return to Pantwari -> Catch Bus/Train from Mussoorie.

Day 1 Itinerary:

Mussoorie tour.

Mussoorie is the most visited and the most romantic hill station due to its stunning weather and serene beauty. It is a small hill station to explore scenic beauty.

To start with, we first had a fantastic  breakfast in Mall Road in a very famous cafe called Kalsang . This is a very colorful restaurant serving varieties of cuisines like Chinese, Thai, and many more. After spending enough time here, we decided to visit Kempty waterfall.

Kempty Waterfall

Kempty waterfall is the perfect picnic spot to enjoy with friends and family. The water stream falls from the height of around 40 ft. You will find stairs to reach up to the exact waterfall. The water is very cold and the surrounding is extremely beautiful. You will definitely spend a splendid and lavish time here.

Kempty waterfall is around 15 kilometers from the main Mussoorie. You can easily get a cab or taxi or car. It will take a maximum of 1 hour to reach including traffic. Plenty of shops are available to provide swimming clothes, towels, floaters, and locker services to keep your belongings safe.

We arrived here in the afternoon and spent around 3-4 hours. We came back by evening around 4-5 PM to our hotel.

Rating: The rating from us would be 8 out of 10.

Dinner at Mall Road Mussoorie

After coming back from the Kempty waterfall, we took some rest at our hotel, freshen up, and decided to have a view of nightlife on the Mall Road of Mussoorie.

Mall road is extremely famous and situated at the center of the city. It has a series of shops of varieties of items like scarfs, hats, video games, bracelets, and many food shops. You will definitely get attracted by the mouth-watering street food stalls there. We tried some as starters and they were delicious.

For dinner, we reached Little LLama Cafe , a very cozy place with a mind-blowing view and fantastic music. The food was marvelous and the ambiance was just perfect. The overall experience of Mall road was perfect and happening.

Rating:  The rating of this from us - is  7 out of 10.

We finally reached back to our hotel at night and had a great sleep.

Day 2 Itinerary:

The next morning was even more thrilling and exciting for us. We were ready for our rousing trek to Nag Tibba and checked out from the hotel early in the morning around 6-7 AM.

Road trip from Mussoorie to Pantwari Village

The journey of the Nag Nibba trek begins with the mesmerizing road trip to Pantwari village as we went through the beautiful sceneries and some of the most delightful countryside views.

The mountain roads are long with survey outlines and are just amazing to watch. The views are definitely worth watching for the photographers. It took around 3-4 hours to reach Pantwari village, from where the actual trek begins.

After reaching Pantwari village we had breakfast to get ourselves ready for the trek to Nag Tibba Base Camp. We contacted a local trek operator in Pantwari village and they assisted in providing a tent and guide for our trek to Nag Tibba.

Trek begins from Pantwari to Nag Tibba Base camp

As we were all set with our tent and guide. We began our journey around 11AM and were so excited to begin the trekking. Typically, this trek is considered the easiest one, even for beginners.

A tip for you is that you should definitely hire a trekking guide as he is the one who will take care of trekking, food, and settling up the tent/camp. He will guide you on the complete trek and would tell the stories related to the place.

From Pantwari to Basecamp is just 5.5 to 6 kilometers and the landscape of the trail is just marvelous. The trek begins from the cemented path from Pantwari, which moving forward turns into the rocky and uneven ground.

As we moved forward in the uphills, the unseen view was opening up giving a beautiful view of the mountains. As we finished 1-1.5 kilometers, we passed through breathtaking views of mountains with dense forests

After covering 1.5 hours of our hike, We passed through the  Goat Village Resort  which is located in a very beautiful location. If someone wants to experience the luxury resort, you can plan your stay here.  After covering half of the trek the difficulty level increases as the trail become more steep and rocky. Also, there is no place to have water so I would recommend you carry water bottles with you to keep yourself hydrated on the trek.

After completing more than half of the trek we got so tired and planned to rest for a few minutes and then continued towards Base camp, As we move forward we came across a dense forest of Oak trees and the trail also got very steep. It is one of the most challenging parts of the trek.

Reached Base Camp

We finally reached the Base camp at around 5PM in the evening and to be honest the view from the top is beyond words. We were surprised to see such a crowd in their colorful tents, settling and getting ready for the bonfire.

We somehow found the perfect place for our camp set up at the top from where we could see the amazing scenic view. Our tour guide helped in setting up the camp and tents.

As it was about to get sunset, we did some photography and watched the sunset peacefully. It was new year's eve and we were over-excited about the fact that we are going to begin the new year in the most stunning way. As time passed, we were around our bonfire, talking, drinking, singing, and truly enjoying the moment.

We finally slept inside our camp to wake up early as we wanted to reach the Summit to view the sunrise.

Day 3 Itinerary:

Trek to summit:.

The next day morning we started our journey with our tour guide very early to reach the summit. It was around  4-5 KM from the base camp. We passed the trail of snow-covered forest which finally took us to the structure of the temple, a renowned Nag Mandir of Nag Devta (the serpent god).

It was just a mesmerizing view to watch in the early morning. We kept trekking and finally reached the Summit point to witness the most beautiful sunrise ever.

I was feeling at the top of the World at that moment. We could easily witness the mighty Mount Everest and the sun emerging from behind the mountain forming a breathtaking view. We felt lucky that we could watch this Sunrise.

Return to Pantwari Village:

After spending enough time here, we came back to our base camp. The trek while coming done was easier for us as it was daytime and we could actually watch the trails and the fabulous views as well.

After reaching the base camp, we took a break for some time to return to the Pantwari village. We had a return bus on the same day from Mussoorie. We came back to Mussoorie on time and finally took our bus back to Delhi.

Important Points for Nag Tibba Trekking:

1. Carry a water bottle as you will feel thirsty while trekking, also there are not enough options on the trail.

2. Wear trekking shoes. You definitely don't want to take risks in the mountain. Though this is an easy trek still there are heaps and climbing trails.

3. If you are traveling in the Winter season, take enough woolen clothes like gloves to cover yourself as the temperature might fall very very low. You will definitely gonna witness snow.

4. Carry snacks as you will feel hungry and there isn't much option to eat that too after reaching the Nag Tibba Base Camp.

Nag Tibba Trek Cover Image

Short, beautiful, and rewarding — that’s how we’ll describe the Nag Tibba trek to you. If you’re looking for a snow trek or want to trek in the Himalayas when you have got a day or two, Nag Tibba is for you.

Nag Tibba trek is an easy to moderate level trek (could be hard for the unfit) in Uttarakhand, India. The one-way distance to the Nag Tibba’s summit is 10 km, and the trek starts from a village named Pantwari, 100 km away from the state capital Dehradun.

This travel guide will tell you all the necessary things about the Nag Tibba trek: how to plan your visit, where to stay, the distance, and more.

7 Things to Keep in Mind Before Going To Nag Tibba Trek

Beauty of Nag Tibba Trek

Here are a few essential things you should note down if you’re planning to do the Nag Tibba trek:

  • Depending upon the time of the year, pack necessary clothes. Don’t underestimate the cold because you’re coming from a hotter region.
  • Buy some energy boosters for the way — chocolates, glucose powder, or energy drinks.
  • Keep more than one bottle of water. There’s only one source of freshwater between the starting point and the base camp. However, you’ll encounter one or two shops selling lemon water if it’s the summer.
  • If you’re not an experienced trekker or coming for the first time, it’s good to go via a trek facilitator or travel agent. We have a trusted connection. If you want it, please contact Misfit Wanderers.
  • Ensure you have support for climbing. Either buy a trekking pole or take a temporary wooden stick from Pantwari village. Your trek guide will help you with the latter.
  • Also, if there’s snow, please buy snow trekking shoes or snow boots to avoid serious accidents. Alternatively, you can get them on rent from Dehradun and Mussoorie.
  • You will need at least two days to easily cover and enjoy the Nag Tibba trek.

Nag Tibba Trek Route

From the starting point, Pantwari Village, to the base camp of the Nag Tibba trek measures 5 km. This distance is comparatively more challenging than the rest of the trek. You pass through rough trails, not so steep but with small rocks, pebbles, and other wild objects.

However, the landscape you see along this trail is simply unexplainable. You might meet villagers selling lemon water or carrying heavy loads to the top. It is worth noting that most of the path of this 5 km doesn’t have a shed, so be prepared to grapple with sweat if it’s hotter when you’re doing this trek.

After you reach the base camp, which is actually 5 km before the summit, you usually rest for the night. And then the next day, early in the morning, approximately around 3:30 am, you wake up and start the trek to the summit. If you don’t want to see the sunrise, you can adjust the time accordingly.

Just before 1 km from the summit, you will see the Nag Devta Temple. He is the god of snakes and locals offer their prayers to Him for the protection of their cattle. Don’t forget to visit this landmark!

Standing in front of the Nag Devta Temple

Furthermore, there’s an on-demand taxi service; ask your travel guide. You can get a taxi, 2 km away from the base camp, to go to Pantwari and vice-versa.

Nag Tibba trek starts at the Pantwari village. So, the distance of Nag Tibba from Dehradun is 100 km, from Mussoorie is 55 km and from Delhi is 380 km.

To do the Nag Tibba trek:

  • First, reach Dehradun,
  • Then take the government to operate bus or taxi to Pantwari village (your travel facilitator might arrange this as well),
  • Start the trek on or before 1 pm to reach base camp by the evening.

Nag Tibba Trek Base Camp

The best time to visit the Nag Tibba trek is October to March. However, if you want to see the snow and Nag Tibba hike in a whitish embrace, go in any month between January to March.

We went in March, and it was too hot during the day, but as we ascended from the base camp towards the summit, the temperature began to drop, and the chilly breeze was now hitting our cheeks.

If the sky is clear and there’s no moonlight, there’s a strong possibility you can see the band of the Milky Way galaxy from the naked eye. We saw it during our trek to the summit, and man, it was awesome!

If you are a space lover or fancy celestial objects, plan your trip to Nag Tibba trek.

1 km before Summit - Nag Tibba Trek

To reach Nag Tibba, you have to arrive at the Uttarakhandi village, Pantwari. And to get to this village, you have to take a private or public vehicle from Dehradun. Furthermore, you can reach Dehradun using the following methods:

Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) connects to significant stations in India, including Delhi and Lucknow.

The Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun connects to many airports in India. You can easily find several cheap flights to Dehradun from different parts of the country and the world.

Uttarakhand Transport Department runs regular buses from and to the surrounding states. For example, you can get frequent buses from Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. Don’t forget to call the customer care of the relevant transport department to know specific timings.

Rocks on the trek route of Nag Tibba

If you have booked your trek via a travel agency, they will already have accommodation sorted. If you are going without any travel agency, you will find accommodation in Pantwari village and at the base camp.

However, it is good to book ahead and visit in the off-season to avoid any tussle. Again, we have trusted contacts, so please reach out to the Misfit Wanderers if you want to do the Nag Tibba trek.

So, this travel guide will help you plan your Nag Tibba trek efficiently. You now know how you will reach Nag Tibba and the practical things you need to keep in mind. Moreover, you know which gadgets and accessories will help you.

Nag Tibba is the highest peak in the lower Himalayan region and one of the best snow treks in India. It not only offers natural vistas that will hook you forever, but it is one of the most easily accessible treks in India.

We wish you a fantastic Nag Tibba expedition.

The best time to plan your nag tibba trek.

While the Nag Tibba Trek is open throughout the year, there are certain things you should keep in mind when you plan your trip. Each season offers its perks for the trek and it depends on you to pick the best season for you based on the perks that you get.

  • Summer Season Climb (March-June)

You will witness the pleasant temperatures of the trek (15-25° C). The clear skies add to the beauty of this Himalayan trek and the Mountain ranges are in a clear view. You will also see the meadows in full bloom with picturesque scenery all around. Feel as though you are in a vibrant painting. However, during this season, there are also high chances for afternoon showers, and the crowds this season are high. If you are looking to have a calm and serene climb with few people around, it is not the season for that as travelers from the plains try to escape harsh weather in this season by flocking to the mountains. The proximity to Mussoorie also makes this place bustled in the summer months.

  • Monsoon (July-September)

This is the least favorable season for a climb for obvious reasons. However, some climbers take this trip to find waterfalls at their peak. This is the main attraction of this season for the Nag Tibba Trek apart from the fewer crowds, and lush greenery.

The crowds dwindle at this time because of the increased slipperiness of the trek route causing it to be difficult for a climb. It can be an unpleasant experience for many.

  • Autumn (October-November)

There is a pleasant weather this time around at the Nag Tibba summit, you will see stunning imagery of fall foliage around and the trekking conditions are much more comfortable when you compare it to the monsoon season. The nights can however be very chilly at the summit and even on the trek route. Make sure that you have all the supplies to keep you warm.

  • Winter (December- February)

This is the season to witness the Nag Tibba Peak a breathtaking landscape with snow-capped mountains. Since this requires proper winter gear and climbing essentials, this season is only recommended for experienced trekkers. At this time, you will see fewer takers for the climb and therefore, the crowds are minimal. The temperatures at this time can range from -5°C to 5°C

The Recommended Season: When is the best time to visit Nag Tibba?

It depends on your personal preference and tolerance levels. If you are looking for

  • Breathtaking views with a comfortable trekking experience: March-June
  • Budget-friendly travel with fewer people around: Autumn (October-November)
  • For an unparalleled adventure with a complete thrill: December-February

For reaching Nag Tibba, first, you have to arrive at Dehradun which is the capital of Uttarakhand. Dehradun is connected by roadways, railways, and airways. The roadways are well connected and the landscapes are alluring throughout. The nearest railway station is the Dehradun railway station which directly connects major cities of India like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and many more. Most of the cities have premium train services like Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Duronto which makes the journey faster and comfortable. The air network is also very good. You can get daily flights from most of the cities in India. From Dehradun, we have to en route to a village named Pantwari. A drive of 85 kilometers followed by 5 kilometers of the trek will advance you to the base camp where the trek actually starts. You will have to rest there for some time to get well acclimatized of the conditions at such high altitudes. The topmost point of the Nag Tibba trek is just over 7 kilometers from the Nag Tibba base camp. The total Nag Tibba Trek distance is around 16 kilometers. You can find the Nag Tibba Trek Map and Nag Tibba Trek Images on our site.

Brief Itinerary

Detailed itinerary, day 1 : dehradun - nag tibba temple campsite.

Pick up will be arranged from Dehradun Railway Station at around 6 AM in the morning. Then we will have a 4-hour uphill drive from Dehradun to Pantwari village located at a height of 4,642 feet. We have to cover a total distance of 85 km by road. The boulevard passes through Mussoorie which is also known as the queen of the hills followed by Kempty Falls. The last stop where you can find an ATM machine is Mussoorie. After this, you won’t find any source of cash outlet. The Yamuna river keeps trailing on the other side of the road till Nainbagh after which we turn on to the road that leads to Nag Tibba. We are supposed to reach Pantwari by 11 in the morning. After reaching Pantwari, a light breakfast is served and a little rest is taken until we start our journey to the main base camp. The hiking part starts after the end of the motorable road until which we will be taken by a vehicle. The trek begins on a well-cemented path until we cross the rocky trail. A stream water reservoir can be found just after 15 minutes of the inception of the trek. We need to fill our bottles here.

You will witness a small village on cliffs that consists of a bunch of thatched-roofed small huts with terrace farmlands in the vicinity. If you are lucky enough to be there during the harvesting season, you will come across a palette of green and yellow shades all around you. The farmlands are very pleasant to the eyes. From here, you can see the Pantwari village lying below. You will have to cross the Goat village which is famous for an eco-tourism resort before making your way to the ridge that connects the Pantwari part of the hills with the Nag Tibba.

A few meters later, as you advance on the trail of the rocky mountain, you make an entry into a thick blanket of oak rhododendron and mark your way out of the ascent curve. The surrounding provides a picturesque beauty which you will certainly want to embrace. After this, we come across an isolated small hut stretched on the farmland which is supposed to act as our next landmark. From here, the main campsite is very close and it takes approximately 5 minutes of walk to reach there. The campsite is actually very beautiful with a forest in the background. You will find smoke-like clouds making its way from below just in front of the main campsite. This will certainly take you to a wonderland just like what you would have imagined in your dreams. Finally, you will reach the main Nag Tibba campsite. This will officially conclude the target of Day 1 but you will have loads of fun at our campsite. Delicious food will be awaiting you after you are done with proper rest and refreshment. We will make sure that you enjoy every second of this trip alongside the company of other members of the trip. It is advised to take a nice sleep because the next day we have to march on the top of the Nag Tibba peak which will demand activeness from your side.

Day 2 : Trek from Temple Camp to Nag Tibba Summit and drive back to Dehradun

The main objective of day 2 is to trek from the campsite to Nag Tibba Summit and then return back to Dehradun. The whole trek objective has a distance of about 11 km and it takes roughly 5 hours to complete the trek. We then drive you back to Dehradun by 6-7 PM. You can arrange your onward plans accordingly. The beginning of Day 2 should be as early as possible as we have a long day ahead of ourselves. It is very important to have a fresh start on the big day. We need to complete the breakfast and proceed to the trek by 5 am in the morning. The trail starts with a thick covering of the forest. You are introduced to the blanket of snow beneath yourself if you trek the Nag Tibba submit during the winter season. The blanket of snow makes it difficult to find the way to the summit because of the snow covering the whole surface. Making an advancement to the summit, you will come across two open patches of land in 20 to 30 minutes. You will find clearings by the fringes of the forest. After this, the trail becomes quite simple tending to a level walk with a very gentle wavelike motion. The third clearing introduces us to the famous Nag Tibba temple which marks the beginning of the Nag Tibba hill. You can witness the breathtaking peaks of Garhwal Himalayas on a clear sky day.

The trek advances into a forest having a steep inclination which is most probably hidden in snow during the winter season. This snow covering makes the trek challenging but at the same time assures you an amazing experience. Near the summit, there will be a turning which will lead to the ridge and then finally advances you to the dense flag covering marking the Nag Tibba summit. The spectacular view will make you feel like this was the staircase to heaven. Standing at an elevation of 10,000 feet and being surrounded by the elegant ranges of Gangotri, Kedarnath, and many other peaks will surely fill your heart will joy and delight. It will surely be worth the trouble you took to reach here. If the trek continues according to the planned schedule, you can sit back and spend some extra time at the summit amidst the beautiful ambiance. But if you are late, you need to make sure that you make the descent as early as possible because the weather at the summit gets worse by the evening. You can make the descent by the same trail you followed to ascend the top of the Nag Tibba summit.

Lunch will be served at the Temple campsite. You will reach back to Pantwari by sunset. A further 4-5 hours drive will take you back to Dehradun. This will mark the end of the whole Nag Tibba trek. From Dehradun, you can plan your further journey. If you have time, we would suggest having a tour of the beautiful city of Dehradun.

We can arrange a cab for you from the pickup point in Dehradun. For communications purposes, we will create a Whatsapp Group before the departure date of the trek and will share the details regarding the transportation. The drop at Dehradun after the trek will be arranged in a similar way.

Our 7 days trip to Meghalaya was a truly memorable experience. Thank you Trekmunk for arranging such an adventurous backpacking trip and a special thanks to Mohit Goswami our trip leader for giving us an experience of what true travelling is. From hitchhiking to traversing the unknown places to eating delicious Momo's to climbing 3000 steps, we did it all in those 7 days which came to end so quickly and none of us wanted to go back home. Such an experience where you just pick up your rucksacks and walk down the roads of a traveller could have been only possible because of Trekmunk!

Chadar trek is considered to be one of the most difficult and dangerous treks, which requires a lot of skilled trek leaders, a perfect guide and a strong team of porters. I choose Trekmunk for Chadar and they proved they are a perfect team. Highly skilled trek leaders, professional skiers, gave us details on how to walk on slippery ice. Professionally trained and certified with wilderness medication programs always ready to take your care in any condition and travelers themselves. One will enjoy their company, their travel stories and their way of leading a trek. Cheers to team Trekmunk.

I chose (after a lot of research) Trekmunk for my first trek - The Hampta Pass and Chandratal Trek. And I am so really glad I did so. The trekker needs to only focus on the trek and the beautiful landscape around him/her. The rest of everything is taken care of by Trekmunk from day 1 till the end of the trek. Scrupulously managed logistics; no compromise on safety and security; experienced, intelligent and knowledgeable trek leaders; scrumptious meals; contingency and backup plans; etc. make Trekmunk an ideal choice to go trekking with. My trek was lead by Ashish Pathania, Prashant Reddy and Sanjay Thakur. The three are were thorough professionals. They were jolly, very helpful, experienced, knowledgeable, organized, and needless to say polite yet strict when needed. They played the most important roles in making sure our overall trekking experience was a wonderful one. Thank you Trekmunk for one of the most beautiful experiences I have had till date. Will see you guys soon.

I was bored with my regular 9 to 5 schedule and then I decided to seclude myself from the chaotic city life. So, I went to Brahmatal trek last month along with a couple of my friends. We went with Trekmunk and it was a lovely experience. The trek guide, Ramesh was very polite and helpful. The food and snacks were amazing. The activities in the campsite during our overnight stay is something that I am gonna cherish my entire life. I am waiting for my next trek with Trekmunk.

Traveling with these people is surely an insanely enthralling experience. This is my second backpacking trip with these people and the way I had imagined backpacking to be has been fulfilled by them and they have given me surely more. The best thing about travelling with these people is that you understand the true meaning of travelling and experience it very closely. You are given great freedom but at the same time taking care of. You participate in the process of backpacking. You have a trip leader with you but he acts more like a friend as the days pass by! We attended the hornbill festival and did a wonderful trek to Dzukuo valley in Nagaland with the leadership of this group. You break the boundaries of yourself when you travel like a true traveller and that is possible with these people.

How to reach Pantwari basecamp?

Sakshi sehajpal.

Pantwari is a village at 4,640 feet in  Dhanaulti  tehsil in the Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand. It is accessible from most major cities and towns in the state and is located 90kms from  Dehradun , the closest city.

A small and scenic village with sprawling farms, Pantwari is the starting point of the  Nag Tibba Trek . One can enjoy stretches of green pastures and the surrounding mountains amidst this sparsely populated village.

This article aims at guiding our trekkers about various options to reach Pantwari.

The closest city to Pantwari is Dehradun which is well-connected by all means of transport. Although most trekkers going for the Nag Tibba trek prefer spending some time in Mussoorie (often dubbed the Queen of the Hills), before heading to Pantwari.

The transportation arranged by Bikat Adventures to the base camp starts from Dehradun. However, if you plan to stay in Mussoorie, arrangements can be made to board the vehicle here as well since it is on the way to Pantwari.

Reaching Dehradun

If you are coming from far off places, you can easily book a flight to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun which is approximately 30 kms from the centre of the city and 28 kms from the Dehradun Railway Station.

As you come out of the airport you will find many cab drivers offering to drop you to the city. You can also pre-book a taxi so as not to waste time in finding the ride.

Buses and shared cabs are also available to the city from across the airport road.

Alternatively, you can also book a flight to Delhi and reach Dehradun by bus or train (overnight journey).

2. By Train from Delhi

Dehradun, being the winter capital of Uttarakhand, is well connected to most cities by railways. Being a famous tourist destination and a common starting point for most treks, the frequency of trains in Dehradun is appreciable.

From Delhi, the most convenient trains to Dehradun would be

  • Jan Shatabdi Express (12055)

Time of Departure from NDLS Railway Station: 03:20 PM

Time of Arrival at Dehradun Railway Station: 09:10 PM

Fare per person (CC): Rs 535 (subject to dynamic pricing)

  • Nanda Devi Express (12205)

Time of Departure from NDLS Railway Station: 11:50 PM

Time of Arrival at Dehradun Railway Station: 05:40 AM

Fare per person (3 rd AC): Rs 590 (subject to dynamic pricing)

3. By Bus from Delhi

From Delhi, an overnight bus or a Volvo can be pre-booked as per your time and convenience.

From Delhi airport, you can take the metro/cab/bus to Kashmere Gate, ISBT, Delhi.

Both AC and non-AC buses are available there till Dehradun. It would take around 11-12 hours from Delhi to Dehradun (256 kms) through the bus facility.

4. By car/personal vehicle

Dehradun being a famous destination for tourists all over the country is well connected through roads. The journey from Delhi to Dehradun is almost 250kms and would take you through Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur. However, driving on your own can be tiresome and is not preferred usually by trekkers.

Reaching Pantwari from Dehradun

There are no direct buses to Pantwari from Dehradun. A convenient option would be to take a bus till Nainbagh. These buses can be boarded from the stoppage opposite to Dehradun Railway Station and would cost around Rs. 150 for the 3-4 hour journey. Pantwari is only about 12 kms from Nainbagh, so you can easily catch a shared taxi for Rs 50-100 and reach Pantwari in no time.

You can also get a shared taxi to Nainbagh that would cost you around Rs. 200-350. These taxis are available outside the Dehradun Railway Station and the ISBT as well. However, taxi drivers wait till their taxis are in full capacity to begin the journey. So, boarding a bus is preferable.

2. By Bikat Adventures Transport

If you have signed up for the  Nag Tibba Trek   with Bikat Adventures , we’ll arrange transport from ISBT Dehradun to Nag Tibba base camp, Pantwari. The pickup time is 7AM and the trekkers should plan on reaching Dehradun well in time. The vehicle can also pick you from any point that falls on the route to Pantwari for the convenience of the trekkers. For more details you can head over to the Itinerary page   for Nag Tibba Trek on our website.

Dehradun to Mussoorie to Pantwari

Mussoorie is yet another tourist attraction in the laps of Uttarakhand at a distance of 33 kms from Dehradun. One can reach Mussoorie by boarding a bus from the stoppage opposite Dehradun Railway Station. One can also take a shared taxi that charge around Rs. 300 from Dehradun Railway Station.

The distance from Mussoorie to Pantwari is approximately 60 kms. There are no direct buses plying between Mussoorie and Pantwari, so one can board a bus till Nainbagh and then take a shared cab from Nainbagh to Pantwari. The latter is a short journey and would hardly take 30-40 minutes to cover.

We hope this information is helpful in planning your travel to Pantwari. In case you have any questions, do leave them in the comments section below.
