Ancient temples, towering volcanoes, vibrant street life

Our fascinating, varied and original Java Overland tour takes you on a 12-day journey by road, rail and boat through Central and East Java to finish at a charming eco-lodge in a little-visited corner of the island of Bali.

Beginning in delightful Yogyakarta Town, we’ll travel through emerald paddy fields, lush forests and past towering volcanoes, traditional villages and ancient World Heritage temples. We’ll visit the fun and friendly towns of Yogyakarta, Solo and Malang with their ancient, Dutch colonial-period architecture, colourful markets and vibrant street life, and of course, delicious street food.

A few of the many varied highlights on our Java Overland tour include awe-inspiring Borobudur – a 9th-century Buddhist temple and a dusk visit to Prambanan Temple – both World Heritage sites, an early morning jeep ride through an active caldera to watch the sunrise over Mount Bromo; a walk through Malang’s amazing labyrinthine ‘ Rainbow Village ‘; meeting the extremely friendly locals on a walking tour of Solo’s colourful market and a day’s exploration on foot, by boat and by jeep of the remote and rarely visited Alas Purwo National Park.

As with our other tours, the emphasis is on combining both the famous and off-the-beaten-track sites, while staying in smaller. boutique and eco-style hotels, sampling the superb, authentic local cuisine and meeting plenty of the island’s fantastically friendly inhabitants.

We’ll finish the tour in Bali, which, along with its convenient flight connections, offers the opportunity for a variety of beach or island extensions including our fantastic 1-week mini-tour to Flores and Komodo .  For those with more time, a 7-day Sumatra tour – including Lake Toba and UNESCO-listed Gunung Leuser National Park – can be added before joining the tour in Yogyakarta making for an 18-day Sumatra, Java and Bali tour while, last but not least, an optional 4-day/3-night tour of the capital Jakarta is also available.

Here's an idea of what you can expect to do and see day-to-day.

Day 1 - Arrival in Yogyakarta

Arrival in Yogyakarta and transfer to our well-located eco-hotel, with time at leisure to explore the area before a local-style, welcome dinner.

Day 2 - Yogyakarta - village cycling tour and Borobudur

Head out of town to a nearby village for a leisurely cycle ride along country lanes past farms, orchards and scenic countryside. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to meet the locals and discover some of the villagers’ traditional cottage industries. Afternoon visit to the famous Borobudur Temple with a return to ‘Jogja’ city for an evening street food tour.

Day 3 - Kotagede and sunset at Prambanan

Morning visit to Kotagede – the fascinating site of the 16th-century capital city – displaying a fusion of earlier Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The ancient city is also the site of a colourful local market so, after a wander, we’ll return to our hotel for lunch and time to relax. Our afternoon programme takes us to another UNESCO site – the 10th-century Hindu temple Prambanan from where we walk through the historical park to catch sunset at the spectacular, but less-visited temple, Candi Sewu.

Day 4 - Solo - walking tour of the friendly town

Short drive to nearby Solo where we’ll head for the bustling and very friendly market, Pasar Legi, plus the town’s fascinating flea market and the famous old Sultan’s Palace. In the afternoon we’ll do a walking tour of Laweyan – a charming labyrinth of narrow lanes and old houses that form Solo’s traditional batik-making quarter.

Day 5 - Head east on a train ride to Malang

Departure across country, past scenic villages, plantations, paddy fields and, of course, volcanoes, on a train ride to the leafy and charming City of Malang in Eastern Java. (Note; post-COVID train schedules have been, to put it politely – erratic – so while it is our preferred means of travel, availability will vary from tour to tour according to dates.)

Day 6 - Malang - the 'Rainbow Village'

Explore the fantastic ‘Rainbow Village’. This crumbling, labyrinth-style quarter was formerly earmarked for demolition before local students teamed up with a paint company to create one of the best urban renewal schemes we’ve come across. We’ll also have time to take in some of the City’s celebrated Dutch-period architecture, before a drive to Bromo National Park.

Day 7 - Bromo - up a volcano before breakfast!

Early morning jeep drive into the national park for sunrise views of awe-inspiring Bromo Volcano , plus a hike through the caldera itself. Return to our charming, little family-run chalet-style resort for breakfast and relaxation time with an optional afternoon hike to one of the park’s nearby waterfalls.

Day 8 - Kalibaru - east by train

Transfer to Probolinggo Town to catch the train further east to the small country town of Kalibaru where we’ll stay in garden chalets at a beautifully situated, riverside eco-resort.

Day 9 - Alas Purwo National Park - boat and jeep tour

Day tour by jeep to the nearby Alas Purwo National Park, located on a remote peninsula in the far southeastern corner of Java.  On the itinerary are wildlife spotting, a picturesque beach, a boat trip through the mangrove swamps and a visit to a turtle sanctuary.

Day 10 - Pemuteran - catch the ferry to Bali

A drive to nearby Ketapang for a short ferry ride across the Straits to the island of Bali where we’ll transfer to our charming, low-key eco-resort in the small fishing port of Pemuteran.

Day 11 - Pemuteran - day at leisure

Day at leisure. Options include relaxing by the pool or at the spa, or for the more energetic, a snorkelling trip on some nearby islands, a hike through the lush surrounding countryside or even trying your hand at an Indonesian cookery class.

Day 12 - Pemuteran and on to Denpasar

Morning at leisure before a transfer across the island to Denpasar Airport for a return flight.

Visas: For most nationalities, a 30-day visa on arrival is issued on arrival at any international airport such as Medan, Yogyakarta or Jakarta. The cost is 500,000 rupiah, which looks like a lot of zeros but $35 (approx. depending on exchange rates) also does the trick. ( See list here .) As usual, 6 months validity from the date of arrival is essential as is at least 1 empty page in your passport and you may be asked to show proof of departure from Indonesia.

Your standard entry point for this tour is Yogyakarta International Airport and exit port is Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasara, Bali).

Tipping: we recommend a kitty system for the smaller, daily tips such as hotel/restaurant staff and local guides and drivers. Amounts inevitably vary with group size but would generally be in the region of around $2-3 per person, per day. With regards to guides accompanying you for longer periods we’d recommend a separate tip of approximately $2-3 per person, per day though of course, this is always discretionary and performance-related. (Local currency or USD are fine.)

Meals: as usual breakfasts are generally hotel buffets with lunch and dinners based on local food. Many Indonesian dishes are internationally famous such as sate, nasi goring, rendang, gado gado etc but there’s much much, more with the already varied cuisine supplemented by plenty of regional specialities as well. Dishes are generally mildly spiced with sambal, the ubiquitous chilli sauce, served separately and there’s a wealth of vegan and vegetarian choices.

For certain, included, meals your tour-leader will order a selection of dishes, local-style, while a number of meals are not included, which allows you to ‘do your own thing’ or take a break if you’re feeling ‘riced out’.  

Accommodation: our selection consists of comfortable 3-4* options with en-suite bathrooms, air-con and, in most cases, pools with the emphasis on smaller heritage and/or eco-style choices.  We have posted a selection of sample accommodation on the lefthand hotel tab but please note that as we try and avoid the larger hotels, availability, in high season particularly, means we use several options in each destination

Activities: note that no activities are compulsory and that any offered, including trekking, can be tailored for any fitness level or alternatives suggested. Be warned there are a couple of very early starts for sunrises on this one!

Hari Ke 03: Probolinggo-Sunrise Bromo-Bali

• Hari Ketiga: dari Probolinggo ke Bali sudah termasuk 3x makan (Makan Pagi, Siang dan Malam).
• Morning call pukul 02.00 WIB dini hari untuk bersiap-siap mengejar sunrise (matahari terbit) dan berangkat dari hotel menuju Desa Ngadisari dengan menggunakan Jeep 4WD menuju Gunung Bromo untuk menyaksikan ke Indahan panorama matahari terbit yang menawan dari Penanjakan atau Seruni Point.
• Mengunjungi Kawah Bromo yang menakjubkan. Karena suhu udara yang dingin, peserta diwajibkan membawa jaket tebal / sarung tangan / senter kecil untuk penerangan di jalan.
• Setelah dari Bromo kembali ke hotel untuk mandi, sarapan pagi dan persiapan check out.

Even though there are flights available every day from Jakarta to Bali, Java Overland Tours is one of the things you can do while visiting Indonesia. Through this tour, you can explore the island of Java by crossing from Jakarta to Bali, or vice versa. On your journey, you can see lots of historical places, a diversity of cultures, beautiful landscapes, and many other things. If you have more time, we suggest you stay a little bit more in cities that we visit along the journey. As every place holds its own charm.

This Java Overland Tour duration is 7 days / 6 nights. Explore Java from West to East. You will be picked up from Jakarta, and dropoff at Surabaya airport. This tour is customized and could be combined with the Bali tour .

Tour Highlights: Tangkuban Perahu, Ciater Hotspring, Tea Plantation, Traditional ‘Angklung’ Bamboo Music, learn the Buddha philosophy by exploring the relief on Borobudur temple , Candirejo traditional Javanese Village, Explore Culture of Yogyakarta, Prambanan Temple, Mount Bromo, Madakaripura Waterfall.

Effective from Jul 1st, 2022, Borobudur temple is only allowed to be visited as close as the outer wall of the temple. We can not climb like in the past. Also, it is closed every Monday.

Avoid visiting Tangkuban Perahu or Mount Bromo on weekend, because it’s too crowded with local domestic.

Early in the morning, from Jakarta drive to Bandung for approximately 3 hours, then you will visit Tangkuban Perahu crater, an active 2000 m wide, the surrealistic volcano at 1800 meters above sea level, you can have a light trekking around the crater. Then continue to Ciater Hot Spring passing through the huge wonderful tea plantation. Here, you will have lunch and possibly take a bath in the hot natural water pool. In the Afternoon back to Bandung with a stop at Padasuka village to enjoy the Angklung (traditional bamboo instrument) performance at Saung Angklung Ujo.

Early breakfast at your hotel, then at the appropriate time transfer to Bandung train station. You will take Indonesia's most popular public transportation to travel to Yogyakarta. Upon your arrival in Yogyakarta, your guide will pick you up and then directly transfer you to your hotel in Yogyakarta.

In the morning you will visit the magical temple of Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia that was built in the 9th century. This huge Buddhist pyramid is the largest Buddhism shrine in Indonesia. From your guide, you can learn the Buddha philosophy by exploring the relief at Borobudur temple. Then Continue exploring Candirejo village, a traditional Javanese village that is rich in its natural surrounding and being promoted for village tourism, portraying traditional Javanese culture and day life through traditional houses, plantation resources, art performances, farming, and local food. You will participate in daily social activities to feel their real traditional village atmosphere, their culture, and lifestyle.  Finally, transfer to your hotel in Yogyakarta. At the appropriate time, we drive to East Java, and to Bromo Highland. We will need some 6.5 hrs to drive today. Stop by at Candi Tikus, Mojokerto.

*There's an alternative use train from Yogyakarta to Mojokerto, and you will be picked up at Mojokerto train station*

Mount Bromo is an active volcano that stands at 2,329 meters. Bromo is located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The slope of the mountain is cultivated by the local Tenggerese farmers with the market vegetables.

The Tenggerese history can be traced back to the peoples of the Majapahit Kingdom who fled their land following an eruption from Mount Merapi. They are the only group of Hindus left in Java today. We have an early night in preparation for the sunrise climb tomorrow.

On this day we will get up very early we get up at 03.00 in the morning for a cup of coffee or tea before heading out for a short drive approximately 3 kilometers to Pananjakan. For the last 1.5 kilometers, we walk up to the highest viewpoint in the area to watch the sunrise. But of course, you can watch the sunrise depending on weather conditions. Then we descend to the sea of sand to see the crater of Mount Bromo. After this activity back to the hotel for breakfast in Madakaripura. After arriving in Madakaripura you will be greeted by the fresh air is still beautiful, about 30 minutes you walk to reach the waterfall you will see a very beautiful waterfall and a compliment to your holiday after a stopover in Bromo. Lunch will be en-route at a local restaurant and in the afternoon, check in to your hotel in Wonosobo, dinner at leisure. DAY 9: Borobudur Yogyakarta Tour (B.L.D) Early monring approximately around 3:30 AM, drive to Borobudur area for sunrise from top of Borobudur. DAY 12: Gunung Kelud Tour – Malang (B.L.D) In the morning Gunung Kelud Touris a volcano located in East Java on Java in Indonesia. Like many Indonesian volcanoes and others on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Kelud is known for large explosive eruptions throughout its history. More than 30 eruptions have occurred since 1000 A.D. Visit Candi Penataran Penataran is the largest and most important Hindu temple complex in East Java. It lies Just 10 kilometers north of Blitar on the lower slopes of Mt Kelud. Dedicated to the god Siva, the temple was in use for at least three hundred years, from the 14th to 16th centuries, and Transfer to Malang. Arrive in Malang, check in at Ijen Suites Resort. DAY 13: MALANG TOUR – BROMO (B,L) Breakfast at hotel. After breakfast, Malang city tour. The tour features Malang town and antiquities of Singosari dynasty dating back from 14th AD. Visiting to Singosari temple and a couple monumental guardian statues of 23 tons each, Jago Temple with delicate and indigenous relief carvings as the influence of 2 dogmatic religion at the period, Hindu and Buddha, Jago temple as the first restored temple in East Java, and Malang town itself known as the old colonial retirement town with its interesting places like Ijen boulevard and ceramic home industry. Afternoon, transfer to Bromo. Arrival in Bromo, check in at Bromo Cottages. Overnight at: Bromo Cottages

DAY 15: Sukamade Beach Tour (Turtle) (B.L) After breakfast at hotel, A full day free at leisure, visiting Sukamade Beach. Sukamade Tour is an adventurous four to six hours drive through peacefull villages, rubber, coffee and cocoa plantations, and a small jungle-tour. It is a scenic journey to Sukamade. On the way heading to Sukamade, you will pass the exotic and peaceful Green Bay. There you will spend the night in the plantations guesthouse. About 8 pm till 11.30 pm you’ll be picked up to watching turtles coming-up from the sea crawling to the beach seeking for a nice place to lay their eggs. The peak season for green turtle (mostly found laying their eggs on Sukamade Beach) is on wet season but usually can be found on entire year. In Sukamade, there’s also the location of the turtle egg hatchery, and all turtles that are successfully hatched are released back into the sea. Note: It is not guaranteed that we will find the sea turtle laying their eggs on this trip. Overnight at: Margo Utomo Kalibaru

DAY 16: Kalibaru – Bondowoso – Ijen (B,L,D) After breakfast at hotel, took a Horse Cart ride to explore the Kalibaru for Kalibaru City Tour. The tour will take approximately 2 hours. After kalibaru city tour, back to hotel and departed to Ijen via Bondowoso. Lunch at Bondowoso. Arrive in Ijen, check in at Arabica Homestay for overnight. Overnight at: Arabica Homestay

DAY 17: Kawah Ijen – Bali (B,L) About at 05:00 in the morning, our 4WD ijen_cratervehicle (jeep) will bring us to the village of Licin and then continue to the slope of Mount Ijen, passing through plantations and rainforest. This is one of the few remaining on the Island of Java with giant ferns, plants & big trees, this journey takes approximately 1 hour from the hotel by private car. Arrive at the parking area of Mount Ijen, approximately 1 until 1.5 hours will be required to ascend slope of mount Ijen to reach peak of Ijen Crater and along the path, you will enjoy the stunning natural scenery with fresh air & shady. Resting on the edge of the crater at an altitude of 2883 meters and enjoy best panorama of the lake of sulphate where reflects spectacular view in the surrounding walls to give the impression like doom. The sulfur mining workers go down into the crater and climb back up by passing dangerous path on the edge of Ijen Crater with the load as much as 80 kilograms on their shoulders. This is really a dangerous & hard job. Here also, you will enjoy the beautiful scenery in the crater of Ijen as one of God’s amazing creation. Do not forget to take pictures in this area as a proof that you have visited one of the most amazing places on earth. After enjoyed the natural scenery at Crater of Ijen and then descend the slope of Mount Ijen until vehicles parking area where our vehicle is waiting for escort you for visiting plantation. Afterward, we will be back to the City of Banyuwangi for having lunch at a local restaurant, then we will continue to the Bali island. We will arrive in Bali island or your Bali hotel in the evening.

OPTIONAL PROGRAM: If the weather is good enough, you will have a chance to see blue fire & sunrise at Ijen Crater but you are required to leave from the hotel around at 12:00pm (midnight) and there will be extra cost for mining worker who will lead us to see blue fire at Ijen Crater.

Discover Bali & Lombok get ready for a magical getaway on the picturesque Islands of Indonesia on this tropical adventure. Both Bali and Lombok are famous for their beauty and welcoming spirit, which you will experience at every turn of this trip.

Om Swastiastu! Welcome to Ubud, Bali’s largest Hindu town, and artistic and cultural heart. Your adventure officially kicks off with a welcome meeting where you’ll meet your Tour leader. If you arrive early, you might like to wander the traditional market stalls near the centre of town, pop into a local café or stretch out your muscles after your flight with a spot of yoga at one of the zen studios in town. After your Welcome Meeting this evening, perhaps head out to for meal at one of the delicious local restaurants.

Start the day with a guided walking tour around Ubud with your local leader (about 2.5 hours). Gain an insight into daily village life as you pass lush rice fields, an alang alang valley (type of wild grass used to make the roof of traditional buildings) and stop by a Balinese home for coffee and experience the traditional Balinese offering. The tour ends in central Ubud, where you’ll have time to explore the many cafes, galleries and shops on your own. In the evening, sit down and enjoy a traditional Kecak dance performance. Driven not by musical instruments, but by human chanting, this fascinating theatrical performance is considered a highlight by many.

Today you’ll explore the area from a different angle – from the saddle of a bike. Enjoy a 2.5-hour tour through backstreets, villages and rice fields. It’s a relatively easy ride – much of the route is downhill – and there will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or a brief rest. You’ll also stop to check out some small, intricately carved temples, before concluding your bike tour back in Ubud. After refuelling with lunch, head for the hills to the village of Undisan, via private minivan. Set against a backdrop of Bali’s highest peak, Mt Agung, the peaceful village of Sidemen is proof that Bali still has some pockets that are untouched by tourism.

Today’s driving time is approximately 2 hours.

Bicycle helmets are included on your ride, and there is a support vehicle if the going gets too tough.

Keep in mind, it’s a little cooler up here, thanks to the elevation. You may need to pack some warmer clothes.

Take a morning walk (approximately 2 hours) around Undisan’s rice terrraces, visiting the craftspeople of the traditional trade, village temples and enjoy a traditional ‘bungkus’ lunch with refreshing coconut. The walk is a great chance to take in the beautiful scenery before we bid a farewell to Undisan and make tracks to Sibetan Village . You’ll be given a special welcome by the chief of the village, then check into your homestay accommodation before enjoying some free time in the afternoon. You might like to explore the traditional village a little or simply just relax and take in the atmosphere here. Alternatively, you could take on an optional cooking class and learn the secret ingredients and spices of the traditional cuisine here. This evening, you’ll enjoy some time spent with the locals and be treated to a typical dinner of salak (snake fruit), prepared for you by the villagers .

This morning, you’ll enjoy a guided walk through an ancient Salak Plantation with the opportunity to interact with the local community. Here, you’ll see cultural heritage plants – the remains of a white mango tree which was first planted in Sibetan in the 16th century as well as a Jaka Moding Plant (a type of palm tree) which is a relic plant. You’ll tuck into Tipat Blayag (Rhombus) for lunch; rice wrapped in young coconut leaves, combined with side dishes of chicken and vegetables. After some time exploring the village and surrounds on foot, you’ll take to four wheels for a journey higher into the mountains, driving along the crater rim road to a fishing village on the edge of Lake Batur. Volcanic Mt Batur (1717 metres/5633 feet) sits inside a stark and spectacular caldera and with Lake Batur below, it’s a stunning sight. The lake supports the local fishing industry, while many of the villagers work as guides for the volcano climb. Your accommodation for the evening is in a great location to start tomorrow’s early morning trek without extra travelling time.

Local community Salak plantation walk

It’s a very early start today – you’ll wake bright and early at around 3 am to begin the 1.5 to 2-hour walk to the summit of Mt Batur in order to reach the top before sunrise. Trust us, it’s worth the effort. On a clear morning, it’s possible to see all the way across the Lombok Strait to the peaks of Lombok’s Mt Rinjani. The view of the gorgeous sunrise over the valleys of Bali may well be the most memorable part of your trip. Do keep in mind, however, that the weather can be unpredictable and sometimes the view is obscured by clouds. After descending the volcano, there’s an option to soak in hot springs with fantastic views over the lake and caldera. Then make the journey from the mountains to the small coastal town of Lovina, made famous by its dolphins that patrol the coast. It’s also a great spot for fine food, traditional massages and yoga.

• Mt Batur – Sunrise volcano climb

Today’s driving time is approximately 3 hours.

The summit trail starts more easily, while heading to the crater it climbs steeply with switchbacks over volcanic rocks and gravel. A good level of fitness is required. The path can be slippery, particularly after rain so good shoes are essential. Please bring your headtorch and a warm layer to wear at the summit. The climb may be cancelled during heavy rain and unsafe conditions.

Explore a traditional market in the morning first and then enjoy a day of snorkelling amongst Menjangan Island’s coral reef, part of the Bali Barat National Park. On the way back from your undersea adventures, you’ll stop for a soak at Banjar Hot Springs, a small spring popular with locals. In the afternoon, stop in to enjoy a tasty cup of coffee with a difference at Global Kafe.

This morning we’ll wave goodbye to Lovina and make our way to Sanur. Along the way, we’ll visit Gitgit waterfall and Lake Bratan before continuing to Sanur to enjoy some free time in the afternoon. Perhaps, enjoy a stroll along Bali’s first beachfront walk, watch the fishermen in the shallows or kick back and relax at one of the beachside restaurants. Get a feel for the traditions and local customs which are well maintained here. Ancient temples are also easily accessible – just a short distance away from the beach.

Travel by minivan from Sanur to the port of Padang Bai (approximately 1.5 hours). Then you’ll take a fast boat that takes you from Bali to Lombok (approximately 1.5-2 hours). Stop for lunch in a basic warung – a traditional Indonesian-style cafe, before taking a minibus to Tetebatu (approximately 2 hours). On the way, stop at Masbagik Village which is well known for its pottery products and where you will get to see it being made on a short walk around the village. The hill retreat of Tetebatu is situated in the centre of Lombok, at the southern base of Mt Rinjani, and boasts spectacular views. Tonight, you will enjoy an included dinner at a family-run restaurant that provides traditional Lombok-style cuisine.

Enjoy a guided walk through lush rice fields and see how the region’s farmers have tended the land for centuries, still using traditional water buffalo ploughs. Climb a little higher and pass through clove and coffee plantations and stop at a local warung to try some local coffee (approximately 2.5 hours total). Visit the local village of Pringgasela to learn traditional weaving and enjoy a delicious Sasak feast. In the afternoon, return to the hotel then travel to Labuhan Pandan on the east coast of Lombok. This remote beachside location is lesser visited by tourists but is a beautiful stretch of coastline. Tonight you’ll stay in bungalow accommodation amid the peace and quiet of the secluded east coast.

Pringasella – Village walk

Take a trip out to the nearby coral reef and enjoy some fantastic snorkelling off the boat. Stop in at a secluded island for lunch with Mt Rinjani towering over Lombok. Tonight, eat a fresh seafood barbecue on the beach. This is island living and relaxation at its best, so soak it all up!

Travel by minibus around the spiritual centre and sleeping giant of the island – Mt Rinjani (approximately 2 hours). Arrive around midday (12 pm) at Senaru – a small, rustic village nestled between the base of Mt Rinjani and the edge of the jungle. Take a guided tour of the local Sasak village to learn about the history and culture of these people who have long lived on the slopes of the mountain. You will also take a walk to the spectacular Sendang Gile waterfall, and perhaps take a refreshing shower underneath it!

Continue to the west coast today by minibus (approximately 2.5 hours). The Gili Islands (Tiga Gili) are a cluster of three small islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. Transfer by small boat to Gili Air (approximately 30 minutes), where you can take in the breezy atmosphere and stroll down stunning white beaches that rival those of the neighbouring islands. Your hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the port. Your bags can be transported by cidemo (horse cart) from the port to the hotel.

The island is your oyster, so today you are completely free to relax or explore. Perhaps take in another snorkelling trip or catch a ferry across to the other islands of Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno and work out for yourself which one has the better beaches. This evening, enjoy an optional dinner on the beach front as you reminisce on memories of your Lombok adventure.

With no activities planned for today, you are free to leave at any time, provided you comply with the hotel’s internal check-out times, usually at 11.30 am. This doesn’t mean your adventure has to come to an end! If you would like to extend your stay on the blissful Gili Air, we’ll be able to organise additional accommodation (subject to availability).

If you are flying out of Bali Denpasar Airport, or Lombok International Airport, please allow enough time for boat and land transfers before your flight. We suggest you don’t book flights before 7pm from Bali or 1pm from Lombok.

Collaboration between Summer Course and Java Bali Overland Tour 2024

One of efforts to improve student performance, Tourism Business Management Study Program, Vocational Education Program, Universitas Indonesia (UI), in collaboration with MARA University of Technology (UITM) Shah Alam, Malaysia, participated in summer course and Java Bali Overland Tour (JBO) 2024. The annual activity organized by the Tourism Business Management study program was attended by all 2022 students and 15 UITM students from May 26 – June 2, 2024. This year, JBO 2024 visited a number of favorite tourist attractions in Semarang, Yogyakarta, Malang, Surabaya, and Bali.

Different from previous years, JBO 2024 this time was also followed by community service activities and international mobility. “We hope that this international collaboration program can continue to grow, both through student mobility activities and other tridarma activities,” said Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D., Director of the UI Vocational Education Program. He added that the collaboration with UITM Shah Alam is an interesting and creative international collaboration. Padang hopes that students can improve their skills in tourism, gain new experiences, and implement the material they have received during lectures.

As a form of community empowerment, students and lecturers conducted community service activities in the form of socialization and counseling at Pentingsari Tourism Village, Yogyakarta; Fave Hotel, Malang; and Penglipuran Village, Bali. The community service topics delivered were tourism sustainability, marketing, and tourism, namely “Socialization of Waste Recycling Period”; “Eco-Enzyme Making”; “Caring for the Environment: Trash Cleanup Demo and Trash Can Procurement”; and ‘Training on Cem-cem Drink Packaging in Penglipuran Village, Bali’.

Meanwhile, the marketing field includes Search Engine Optimization (SEO) optimization in Pentingsari Tourism Village; social media & website content creation and the tourism field in the form of K3 socialization in the hotel accommodation industry at Fave Hotel Malang, as well as disaster risk K3 socialization, sapta pesona socialization in Penglipuran Tourism Village, Bali. A number of lecturers involved in the activity were Anisatul Auliya, S.ST., Par., M.Par.; Dr. Poeti Nazura Gulfira Akbar, S.T., M.Sc.; Dr. dr. Ayleen Alicia Kosasih, M.Biomed.; Mahadewi, S.Sos., M.M., Diani Mustika Prianti, M.M.; Mochamad Fajar Akbar, S.ST.Par., M.Si.Par.; Sri Suryani, M.M.; Febrian, M.Si.; and Muhammad Hidayat Sahid, A.Md.OT., S.K.M., M.Epid.

Anisatul Auliya, the Head of the Tourism Business Management Study Program, said that the JBO activity was a collaboration of seven courses as an implementation of classroom learning, namely Tourist Guiding, Travel Operations Practice, Event Management, Promotion and Marketing Management, Tourism Digitalization and Creative Economy, Risk Management, and Human Resource Management. “During the activity, students learn to act as tour guides, tour leaders, travel writers, as well as resource persons during community service activities and pack a gala dinner event as a closing in a series of JBO 2024 activities,” said Auliya.

One of the UITM Shah Alam students, Muhammad Haziq Bin Muhammad Razelan, said that he had a new experience participating in JBO 2024. According to him, the summer course program he participated in provided insight into the rich nuances of tourism in Indonesia. “Learning activities at UI Vocational School turned out to be very impressive. The implementation of learning through direct practice trains us to continue to dare to express ourselves and be ready to enter the industry later,” said Haziq.
