Extending Your Stay with the Short Term Visit Pass

Singapore’s mix of culture, business, and beautiful green areas often makes visitors wish to stay longer. If you’re not ready to leave this vibrant city-state, consider extending your Short Term Visit Pass. This guide will help you understand how to extend your STVP, including the rules and limits, and guide you through the extension application process.

Understanding the Conditions and Limitations

Extending an STVP is possible, but it comes with its set of conditions and limitations. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Eligibility: Extensions are not guaranteed and are subject to approval by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore. Your eligibility for an extension may depend on the reason for your stay and your compliance with your original visit pass terms.
  • Duration: The ICA determines the extension period. Generally, you may apply to extend your stay for up to 30 days from your date of entry into Singapore. However, if you are an immediate family member (i.e., spouse, parents, children, and siblings) of a Singapore citizen or Singapore permanent resident, you may apply to extend your stay for up to 89 days from your date of entry into Singapore.
  • Limitations: There are strict limits on the number of extensions you can apply for, and each application is evaluated on its own merits. Factors such as your travel history, extended stay’s purpose, and ties to your home country will be considered.

Applying for an Extension: The Process

If you decide to extend your stay, the process is relatively straightforward but requires attention to detail:

  • Timing: To account for potential processing delays, submit your extension application at least seven days before the expiration of your current STVP. Extensions can be requested up to 14 days before the expiry.
  • Online Application: The most convenient way to apply for an extension is through the ICA’s e-Service. You must log in, complete the application form, and submit the required documents.
  • Required Documents : To apply for an extension of your STVP, you’ll typically need the following:
  • Valid Travel Document : A copy of your passport, specifically the page displaying your personal particulars.
  • Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E) Number : This can be found on your SG Arrival Card.
  • Current STVP : A copy of your existing Short-Term Visit Pass.
  • Detailed Reason for Extension : A clear explanation outlining the necessity for your extended stay.

Additional documents or clarifications may be required based on individual circumstances. During the online submission process, or at an interview at the Visitor Services Centre located on Level 4 of the ICA Building, you and your local sponsor (if applicable) may be asked to provide scanned copies or original documents. Examples of additional requirements include:

  • For visitors with immediate family members who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents : Original supporting documents may be necessary to verify the relationship.
  • For visitors seeking an extension for medical treatment : A completed Form V75 , endorsed by a registered doctor in Singapore, detailing the illness and the required period of stay.
  • Application Fee: A non-refundable fee may be associated with your application for an extension.

Potential Outcomes

  • Approval: If your application is successful, you will receive an extension of your STVP for a specified period. It’s important to adhere strictly to the new terms of your stay.
  • Rejection: Applications can be rejected for various reasons, including insufficient justification for the extended stay or failure to meet eligibility criteria. If your application is denied, you are expected to leave Singapore by the expiry date of your current STVP.

Tips for a Successful Application

  • Provide Detailed Justification: Clearly explain why you need an extension, whether for personal reasons, unforeseen circumstances, or other valid grounds.
  • Plan Ahead: Don’t wait until the last minute. The early application increases your chances of a smooth extension process.

Extending your STVP offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in Singapore’s wonders further, be it for personal exploration, family reasons, or unexpected circumstances. how to extend short term visit pass

Start the journey

Speak with one of our experts to explore a tailored solution for your business

Singapore has lenient visit pass and   visa requirements  for citizens of most countries. If you are a citizen under the following countries  mentioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , it means that you wouldn’t have to apply for a visa before departure.

The period of the short-term visit pass varies for each country or region. Visitors from ASEAN countries, for instance, are entitled to 30 days of stay , whereas those from countries in the European Union are entitled to  90 days of stay . The length of stay may seem long enough for leisure purposes, hopefully, to entice tourists and travellers to Singapore, especially now that the country has begun to establish travel bubbles with several countries such as Germany and Brunei. These travel bubbles allow tourists to visit Singapore without serving a stay-at-home notice (SHN). You may roam around Singapore as long as you have your vaccination documents with you.

Visit Pass in Singapore

However, for those who visit for reasons other than leisure, like medical purposes, the given length of stay may not be adequate; they may wish to extend their stay in Singapore. This is where a Singapore visa pass extension comes into the picture. As the name implies, it means that you request your visit to be extended past your original date. This process must be done online via  Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA).  It is advisable to apply for a visa extension seven days before the expiry date of your visa pass to avoid overstaying, which is a punishable offence.

Visit Pass Singapore– Documents to Apply for Extension

According to the ICA, in applying for your visa extension, several documents must be submitted via the e-Services. They are as follows:

  • Passport with at least six months validity and submit a copy of the page that contains your personal particulars.
  • Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E) number that can be found in your SG Arrival Card.
  • If you have immediate family members who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents, a document proving the relationship is required.
  • Those seeking an extension for medical purposes must fill out a Form V75, stating the details of the illness and the length of stay needed for treatment. It must be endorsed by a registered doctor in Singapore.

The Need for Local Sponsor

Generally, you don’t need a local sponsor if your extension request is only for 30 days unless you are originating from these countries . If you seek an extension of 89 days from the date of entry, you will also need a sponsor.

Explainer: What is a short-term visit pass?

SINGAPORE — The growing cluster of Covid-19 cases linked to KTV nightclubs involving non-Singaporeans has cast a spotlight on short-term visit pass holders.

how to extend short term visit pass

Natasha Meah

These pass holders are not supposed to work as part of immigration rules, but it emerged on Friday (July 16) that at least eight short-term visit pass holders have been linked to the KTV cluster.

The eight include the Vietnamese hostess first linked to the cluster .

She had entered Singapore in February this year on a short-term visit pass via the Familial Ties Lane sponsored by her Singaporean boyfriend, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said.

ICA clarified later on Friday that this allowance was made in October last year so that Singaporeans who were in relationships with foreign partners could be reunited after being separated for long periods due to the pandemic. This allowance was, however, removed in March this year.

The authority was making a clarification on the matter because now, those who are applying for entry through the Familial Ties Lane need to be an immediate family member, relative or a spouse-to-be of a Singapore citizen or a Singapore permanent resident.

Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam said in February that between January 2020 and January 2021, 4.9 million short-term visit pass holders entered Singapore, of whom 4.1 million entered before April 2020.

TODAY looks at what short-term visit passes are and finds out who can apply for one and under what conditions.

What is a short-term visit pass?

A short-term visit pass is issued to eligible foreigners entering Singapore for short visits.

Short-term visits by foreigners via travel lanes are now allowed only for countries or regions with low risk of Covid-19 importation, the SafeTravel website states.

It adds that these lanes have been made available to facilitate controlled entry to Singapore, “based on the traveller’s profile and purpose of travel”.

Who can apply for a short-term visit pass?

All short-term visitors, including those with a previously issued short-term visa or multiple-visit visa, are not allowed to enter Singapore, ICA’s website states.

Visitors are only allowed to enter the country if they have a valid SafeTravel Pass and Air Travel Pass or if they have an approval letter of entry from the relevant agency in Singapore.

Those who need to visit Singapore due to “extenuating reasons” may submit an application for a short-term visit pass through the Familial Ties Lane for Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

This lane was implemented on March 30 last year.

The visitor needs to be an immediate family member, relative or a spouse-to-be of a Singapore citizen or a Singapore permanent resident.

For reasons such as the death of a family member or critical illness of a family member in Singapore, non-residents may also apply for the pass. However, only a maximum of two visitors for each case is allowed.

How can one enter Singapore?

Business and official travellers may commute between Singapore and mainland China — Chongqing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Tianjin and Zhejiang — and Singapore and Brunei Darussalam under the Reciprocal Green Lane arrangement.

These travellers will need to apply for the SafeTravel Pass with ICA for entry into Singapore.

Alternatively, foreigners who are short-term visitors, including business and official travellers, travelling from Brunei and mainland China may seek entry into Singapore by applying for an Air Travel Pass. Those travelling from New Zealand may also apply for this pass.

Changi Airport’s website states that the main difference between the SafeTravel Pass and the Air Travel Pass lies in the nature of the intended travel.

While the SafeTravel Pass facilitates only essential business and official travel, the Air Travel Pass enables all forms of short-term travel from approved countries or regions, including leisure travel to Singapore.

Applications must be made between seven and 30 calendar days before the visitor’s intended date of entry into Singapore.

The pass is valid for single entry anytime from the visitor’s intended date of entry and up to seven calendar days after that.

Visitors must also remain in their declared point of departure in the last 21 consecutive days before departing for Singapore.

For those hoping to obtain a pass via the Familial Ties Lane, applications are allowed for all travellers except those who have travel or transit history to Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the past 21 days before arriving in Singapore.

The purpose of the visit includes to reunite with their Singaporean or permanent resident family here or to complete long-term immigration facilities.

How long can a short-term visitor stay in Singapore?

Foreigners with family ties here such as spouses, siblings, parents, children, parents-in-laws of a Singapore citizen or permanent resident, or are seeking medical treatment here are eligible to apply for an extension of stay of up to 90 days.

Applicants have to include original supporting documentary evidence in support of the application.

ICA’S joint statement with MOM on Friday stated: “During this pandemic, ICA has been assessing applications to extend short-term visit passes on a case-by-case basis taking into consideration extenuating reasons, such as international travel restrictions and flight availability, and whether the applicants have family ties in Singapore.”

Are short-term visit pass holders allowed to work?

The authorities said that short-term visitors cannot engage in any form of employment (paid or unpaid), or in any business, profession or occupation in Singapore. Offenders caught breaking this law could have their visit pass cancelled, be deported and be barred from re-entering Singapore.

What is the penalty for overstayers?

The Immigration Act states that any person who remains in Singapore unlawfully for a period not exceeding 90 days can be jailed for up to six months or fined up to S$4,000, or both.

Those who overstayed for longer than 90 days will also be caned.

Singapore Visa Extension 2024: A Complete Guide

Singapore remains a beloved destination among travellers, offering a plethora of delightful attractions despite its compact size. From tantalising culinary adventures to exhilarating shopping excursions and visits to iconic landmarks, there's something for everyone in this vibrant city-state.

When planning your visit, it's important to note that visa requirements vary depending on your citizenship. Depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for a short-term tourist visa either upon arrival or in advance of your travel. However, if you find yourself wanting to extend your stay beyond the initial visa duration, you may wonder about obtaining a renewable tourist visa for Singapore.

For those seeking to prolong their time in this remarkable country, our guide on Singapore visa extension provides valuable insights into the process, including information on what a Singapore visa entails and how to successfully renew it.

What is a Short-term Visit Pass (STVP)?

how to extend short term visit pass

A Short-Term Visit Pass (STVP), typically issued as an electronic visit pass or e-Pass upon entry, grants eligible visitors temporary stay in Singapore for tourism, social visits, or medical purposes. To verify STVP validity, visitors can use the visit pass validity tool or the e-Pass enquiry portal. Visitors under STVP are prohibited from engaging in any employment, business, or profession. However, that does not apply if visitors possess a valid work pass or participate in Work Pass Exempt Activities. Upon entry, passports are stamped with a Visit Pass indicating the permitted stay's end date, usually 30 days. An extension of up to 30 days is available through the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority for a one-time extension of a short-term Visit Pass.

All You Need to Know about Extension of Stay

how to extend short term visit pass

Understanding the Singapore visit visa entails clarifying several essential points. It serves as a prerequisite travel document for citizens of non-visa-exempt countries visiting Singapore, granting permission to enter the country. Upon arrival, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority verifies the visa, issuing a Singapore Arrival Card, also known as a Singapore Visit Pass, specifying the permitted stay duration. Obtaining this pass is crucial for entry.

Notably, the visit visa's validity may exceed the permitted stay duration. Visitors must heed the Visit Pass expiration date stamped by Immigration; overstaying incurs heavy penalties. Renewal of the Singapore visit pass is possible before expiration. STVP extension applications, submitted online up to 14 days before expiry, are processed by ICA (Immigration & Checkpoints Authority). Approval notifications are sent via email, obviating the need for physical endorsements. For STVPs issued by MOM (Ministry of Manpower) to foreigners, inquiries can be directed to [email protected] or through MOM's website.

Nationals from a wide range of countries can conveniently apply for an online extension of stay. However, for nationals of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen, the process differs slightly. In these cases, applications must be submitted in person at the ICA Building. This ensures a smooth and efficient process tailored to your needs.

Singapore Visa Extension Fee and Payment

how to extend short term visit pass

Upon receiving approval for your stay extension, you'll be required to settle certain non-refundable fees. The extension fee amounts to S$40, applicable if your extended stay in Singapore exceeds 90 days from the date of entry or pass issuance. This fee applies to each subsequent 90-day period thereafter. Additionally, visa-required visitors who overstay their visa-free period will incur a S$30 visa fee.

It's important to note that the extension will only be finalised upon payment. Failure to make payment promptly will result in the withdrawal of your application. Hence, it's advised to settle the fees before the expiry date of your existing STVP.

Payment can be conveniently made through various channels, including online via Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Internet Direct Debit, as well as in-person at ICA counters using Visa, MasterCard, NETS, NETS QR, or mobile payment methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.

In conclusion, the extension of your Visit Pass offers flexibility and convenience for your stay in Singapore. With a processing time of just three working days, the process is efficient and streamlined. However, it's essential to understand that approval isn't guaranteed, and refusals can occur.

If your application is denied, you have the option to appeal to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, provided you can present new supporting information or demonstrate exceptional circumstances. Remember, appeals must be made in person at the Visitor Services Centre, ICA Building, accompanied by your local sponsor.
