Cyclist out of Tour of Britain after being 'hit by 4x4 and threatened by driver'

Kate richardson, 21, described the "incredibly scary" incident and said her injuries mean she will now miss the cycling race across britain..

Wednesday 5 June 2024 12:32, UK

A cyclist has been forced to pull out of the Tour of Britain after she said she was struck by a 4x4 and verbally abused by the driver.

Kate Richardson, a road and track cyclist from Glasgow , has enjoyed a decorated early career, including national and junior European championships.

After winning the recent Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix, the 21-year-old was looking ahead to this week's Tour of Britain.

However, she described how she was hit at "high speed" by a car while training, leading to her suffering a broken collarbone after it had just healed following an injury earlier this year.

Richardson said she also has severe bruising across her right hip and "road rash" - a term used for friction wounds caused when cyclists crash and skid on a road.

This is a limited version of the story so unfortunately this content is not available. Open the full version

In a social media post, Richardson said the crash was "incredibly hard to accept" and "just should have never happened".

She wrote on Instagram: "I was on a narrow single track road, no more than three metres wide, on a blind bend and clearly the driver couldn't wait ten more seconds to overtake me.

"He decided to try and squeeze his huge 4x4 past me at a high speed, hitting me hard and knocking me off my bike.

"Initially, he just drove on but turned around and came back later to verbally abuse and threaten me before getting back in his car and driving off again."

Richardson said another driver came across her and helped her up and gave her a lift home.

However, due to the crash, she will miss this year's Tour of Britain, which is taking place from 6 to 9 June.

"This is a lot more than just a physical injury, it was incredibly scary and I count myself lucky that I walked away relatively unscathed compared to what it could have been," Richardson wrote.

The incident was her fourth serious crash in the last year and she said it would take some time to overcome mentally, describing it as "hugely disappointing".

In response, Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey said: "Utterly dreadful news, hoping Kate makes a speedy recovery & after the physical injuries have healed she can manage the psychological impact."

Police were made aware of the incident, which is said to have happened in Yorkshire, and have been approached for comment.

Ethan Hayter sprints to stage five victory and the leader's jersey at the 2021 Tour of Britain

Ethan Hayter took victory on stage five of the Tour of Britain in a bunch sprint, beating Giacomo Nizzolo, as well as re-taking the overall race lead.

Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) pulled a sensational sprint out of the bag to beat Nizzolo (Qhubeka-NextHash) and Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) with Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) missing out on taking part in the sprint due to a late crash in the final corner.

Thanks to the bonus seconds, Hayter goes back into the dark blue leader's jersey after Van Aert took it from him on stage four.

The breakaway pushed the peloton all the way until just before the final kilometre of the stage into Warrington with the damp roads causing the late crash.

How it happened

The 2021 Tour of Britain moved back into England for the fifth day of competition with a stage taking place entirely in Cheshire with a 152.2km route from Alderley Park with a finish in Warrington.

Five riders got away after a decent length battle to get up the road with the likes of Owain Doull (Ineos Grenadiers) trying to make it into the break. But eventually the break got away before the first intermediate sprint.

The riders who went up the road were Jacob Scott (Canyon-dhb-SunGod), Chris Blevins (Trinity Racing), Leon Mazzone (Saint Pirin), Nickolas Zukowsky (Rally), and Dan Bigham (Ribble-Weldtite), with the gap getting out to four minutes at its peak.

Tour of Britain stage 5

Deceuninck - Quick-Step, Israel Start-Up Nation and Qhubeka-NextHash controlled the gap throughout the day, bringing the gap down to settle around the 2-30 mark.

Unsurprisingly, Scott took every intermediate sprint and mountain sprint throughout the stage as he extended his huge advantage in both competitions. Zukowsky tried to pip the British rider on the first two climbs but was beaten on both occasions meaning he didn’t even try in the third and final climb.

The rain began to fall hard as the race headed towards the final intermediate sprint of the day in Chelford as the dry and sunny Tour of Britain riders had got used to disappeared.

Back in the peloton, the tempo was building up slowly with the gap at 1-28 with 30km to go as the sun did return yet again.

Scott was the first rider dropped with 16km to go after Bigham upped the pace dramatically as the peloton were now just 37 seconds behind. Scott was caught by the peloton very quickly.

Bigham put in a very big acceleration with 12km to go and kicked on solo as he looked to try and hold off the peloton that was still being controlled by the same three teams, as well as SwiftCarbon.

Zukowsky and Blevins caught Bigham as Mazzone dropped back to the peloton with 9km to the finish and a 25-second gap to the rapidly travelling peloton. Ineos Grenadiers got involved with the chase with 8km to go as the gap was closed to just 11 seconds.

The break was finally caught with 1.6km to go thanks to a huge turn by Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck - Quick-Step). Ineos Grenadiers took over yet again as Deceuninck - Quick-Step got ready for their final lead-out.

But it was Ineos Grenadiers that had control of the race into the final corner that saw Doull hit the deck which blocked multiple riders, including Van Aert, from taking part in the sprint.

Michał Kwiatkowski led out his Ineos Grenadiers team-mate, Hayter with the team leader launching his sprint with about 200 metres to go, holding off the likes of Nizzolo and Cavendish who had to make up a lot of ground due to losing ground after the crash.

The 10 bonus seconds that Hayter took on the line meant that he took the leader's jersey back off Van Aert, with a gap of eight seconds between the two riders in the general classification.

Stage six of the Tour of Britain heads further north with a tricky 198km route that includes three category one climbs in the middle of the day, as the race rides from one side of the country in Carlisle to a hilly finish in Gateshead on the northeastern coast of England.

Hi, I'm one of Cycling Weekly's content writers for the web team responsible for writing stories on racing, tech, updating evergreen pages as well as the weekly email newsletter. Proud Yorkshireman from the UK's answer to Flanders, Calderdale, go check out the cobbled climbs!

I started watching cycling back in 2010, before all the hype around London 2012 and Bradley Wiggins at the Tour de France. In fact, it was Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck's battle in the fog up the Tourmalet on stage 17 of the Tour de France.

It took me a few more years to get into the journalism side of things, but I had a good idea I wanted to get into cycling journalism by the end of year nine at school and started doing voluntary work soon after. This got me a chance to go to the London Six Days, Tour de Yorkshire and the Tour of Britain to name a few before eventually joining Eurosport's online team while I was at uni, where I studied journalism. Eurosport gave me the opportunity to work at the world championships in Harrogate back in the awful weather.

After various bar jobs, I managed to get my way into Cycling Weekly in late February of 2020 where I mostly write about racing and everything around that as it's what I specialise in but don't be surprised to see my name on other news stories.

When not writing stories for the site, I don't really switch off my cycling side as I watch every race that is televised as well as being a rider myself and a regular user of the game Pro Cycling Manager. Maybe too regular.

My bike is a well used Specialized Tarmac SL4 when out on my local roads back in West Yorkshire as well as in northern Hampshire with the hills and mountains being my preferred terrain.

A cyclist has been taken to hospital after Tour of Britain racers piled into a parked car in Retford.

The riders came hurtling past the town's square to a rapturous reception from the hundreds of people lining the road, but as they turned the sharp bend into Grove Street, a rider smashed into the back of a parked car.

About ten riders were then caught up in the pile-up in Retford town centre.

An ambulance, police and other race officials all rushed to the scene of the crash.

Mike Barker was watching it all unfold.

He said: "About 50 bikes came round and then someone went through the window of the parked car.

"There was a huddle of bikes piled up afterwards with 3 or 4 on the floor and they were trying to get them up and then the ambulance came."

A car was parked in a disabled bay just around the corner where Market Square turns into Grove Street, and a rider who was taking the bend wide could not avoid it.

The car window was shattered with glass strewn across the road.

A post on the Tour of Britain official blog said: "A number of BMC riders seem to have come off worst there including Brent Bookwalter."

One witness of the accident said: “About four or five of them came round the corner onto Grove Street and all piled into the back of a parked car outside Topkapi – one went through the back windscreen of the car.

“It was shocking to see – he’s lucky to be alive.”

“I can’t believe someone was allowed to park there – it’s madness,” said Graham Moor, 53, from Retford.

“It’s in a disabled bay and there was a marshall in place but at the speed they were going they couldn’t have stopped it happening.

“It’s such a shame that this will be what people remember about the race coming through Retford – the crowd was amazing and seeing something like this was pretty shocking.”

Another eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: "He hit the car and bounced off it - those parked cars just should not have been there.

"It's just a shame because now that's all they will be talking about on the news - welcome to Retford.

"He would have trained so hard for it and now it's ruined."

An ambulance worker said the rider sustained a three inch deep gash to his right upper arm - but the other riders caught up in the smash escaped relatively unscathed.

As the rider was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher, sat upright, the crowds burst into a spontaneous round of applause.

There were scenes of chaos in the Greater Manchester stage of the Tour of Britain after a dog suddenly ran out into the road and caused top cyclists to come crashing off their bikes.

Greater Manchester hosted the Tour of Britain Grand Départ on Sunday (September 3) with over 100 of the world's top riders setting off from Altrincham and riding a 163 km route around the region.

And excited crowds who were watching on as the cyclists made their way through the streets of Mossley at around 1.30pm suddenly gasped and screamed after a little dog was seen running out into the middle of the road.

J oin our WhatsAp p Top Stories and Breaking News group by clicking this link .

Video footage shared with the Manchester Evening News shows the tense moment a small dog, which was not on a lead, appears out of a side road just seconds after the police are seen passing as they lead the route along Huddersfield Road.

tour of britain crash

The dog is then briefly seen moving of the way of the oncoming group of professional cyclists, before suddenly running back out again and causing huge screams and gasps from horrified bystanders.

Scenes of chaos then quickly unfold as a number of cyclists appear to get caught up in the huge pile up and are stalled by shunting into one another, with at least two seen tumbling off their bikes and onto the ground.

One man who saw the incident unfold said: "The dog ran in to the middle of the main pack and took a few riders out. It caused quite a bit of commotion. No-one was seriously hurt and you see the dog run off.

"This could have been a very serious accident if the dog had not run out the first time, just before the front runners, as I believe they slowed the following riders slightly.

"When the dog ran out the second time it went straight in to the middle of the pack causing multiple riders to take evasive action, one of them went over the handlebars but managed to get back on his bike and continue."

This is the moment riders in the Tour of Britain crashed into a parked car - causing a huge pile-up and leaving one rider out of the race.

The incident happened as the peleton negotiated a bend leading into Grove Street in Retford.

Update: Rider who crashed out of Tour de Britain says pile-up 'could have been avoided'

A number of riders crashed into the back of a parked car, with one smashing the car's back window .

BMC cyclist Brent Bookwalter didn't hit the windscreen but was the most severely injured, and has been forced to abandon the OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

He was taken to hospital but has now been discharged.

For all the latest job vacancies in Nottingham and Notts click here .

Yesterday BMC Racing Team doctor, Dr Scott Major, said: "It looked like Brent hit the edge of the car coming out of the corner and then flew forward, and was lying near the passenger side door.

"He didn't go into the windshield, but he did hit his head and has a mild to moderate concussion, which is the biggest concern and we will continue to monitor him now he is out of the hospital.

"He also has some small lacerations, including one on his shoulder which required stitches, as well as some road rash and a deep thigh contusion. He underwent X-rays at the hospital, and everything came back negative so there are no fractures and all his injuries appear superficial at the moment.

"In terms of his recovery, I think it will be good for him to back on the bike in the next four to six days to spin the legs but he will definitely need a couple of days rest."

tour of britain crash

Bookwalter said he was disappointed to crash out of the race, but was thankful that his injuries will not require too much time off the bike.

He said: "I don't remember the crash entirely, which does make it a little scary. I remember, at the last moment, hitting the car and then I was on the ground.

"I instinctively tried to get back up but my head was pounding, and I was feeling a bit fuzzy.

"Since being taken to the hospital, I have slowly been getting back to myself, but I am definitely feeling sore. As disappointed as I am to crash out of the race, I can be thankful that I had a big round of X-rays and there are no fractures, and I won't have a prolonged period of recovery.

"I am definitely in some pain but thankful that it wasn't as bad as it maybe could have been."

Meanwhile people have been taking to social media to question why the car, which was parked in a disabled bay, was there in the first place.

A spokeswoman for the Tour of Britain said: “We are aware of the incident involving Brent Bookwalter of the BMC Racing Team in Retford during Stage Four and are investigating thoroughly as to the circumstances leading up to it.

“We operate a rolling road closure and cannot remove every parked vehicle on the race route, however we work with residents, communities and local authorities ahead of the event to ensure as safe and clear a passage for the race as possible.

“In this instance the car that was parked in a disabled parking bay wasn’t able to be moved before the arrival of the race, and as per our procedures was flagged by one of our motorcycle marshals to alert riders to an obstacle in the road.

“The rider was treated immediately at the scene and taken to hospital by race medical staff and is in a stable and non-critical condition with mild concussion, lacerations and bruising.

“The Nottinghamshire stage was a huge success and while we do not wish for this incident to take the shine off a great day, we take it very seriously indeed and will investigate thoroughly ensuring any lessons learnt are implemented immediately. We invest in and take very seriously the safety of competitors and spectators so are naturally disappointed by any negative incidents such as today’s.

“At this stage we will be making no further comment about the incident.”

Ethan Hayter wins stage five of the Tour of Britain in Warrington

Ethan Hayter regains Tour of Britain lead with dramatic sprint victory

  • British rider wins in Warrington after teammate Doull’s crash
  • Hayter holds 8sec lead over Van Aert after stage five

A sprint stage win in Warrington enabled Ethan Hayter to regain the race lead in the Tour of Britain with two of the strongest finishers in the sport – Mark Cavendish and Giacomo Nizzolo – floundering in his wake. It sets up the 22-year-old for a wholehearted tilt at the overall title assuming he can hang on to the blue leader’s jersey on Friday’s run through the Cumbrian hills.

On treacherous roads dampened by afternoon showers after the 152km through Cheshire, Hayter rode his luck, as sprinters always do. On the final acute left-hand turn from Froghall Lane into Liverpool Road with 700 metres remaining, the Londoner’s Ineos teammate Owain Doull lost control and fell, taking down Will Tidball of Great Britain and the Bodmin runner-up Nils Eekhoff, as well as Cavendish’s lead-out man Davide Ballerini.

“It got messy, it was like slow motion,” said Hayter. “I knew it was slippy, that last corner I was a bit backed off [behind Doull] which probably saved me. He started to drift, and I was like: ‘Ooh, not good’. He did crash and his bike was moving right, right, right and I squeezed between it and the barrier. I was so lucky.”

The confusion caused a split at the front of the string, with Hayter among five riders who opened a small gap in the wake of Ineos’s lead-out man Michal Kwiatkowski. Cavendish also avoided the crash, but stalled to avoid Doull and his wayward bike, and had to make two flat-out efforts in less than a minute, the first to bridge the gap to the group including Hayter – a sprint that took him on to the Londoner’s wheel – and the second his usual sprint for the line.

Nizzolo opened up his sprint on the left just as Hayter launched his final effort on the right; briefly there was obvious daylight between the two for Cavendish – who was also baulked slightly by Colin Joyce of Rally Cycling – to drive for the line. But either the Manxman’s legs gave out, or he sensed that both Hayter and Nizzolo were drifting towards each other and closing the gap; he curbed his effort to take fifth.

The Great Orme stage winner and overnight leader Wout van Aert finished 22nd, after also having to brake to avoid the crash, meaning that with the 10sec time bonus for the stage win deducted, Hayter moved 8sec clear of the Belgian national champion in the overall standings. The 2018 winner Julian Alaphilippe of France retained third, 19sec back. Although Mikkel Honoré of Denmark, Michael Woods of Canada and the Australian Rohan Dennis are also within a minute, the race now looks increasingly like a fight between the two in-form sprinters, Hayter and Van Aert.

Friday’s run from Carlisle to Gateshead includes three first-category Cumbrian climbs, Hartside, Killhope and – right on the border with Northumberland – Burtree Fell, but the run-in to the finish is long enough to suggest that the finish at Gateshead will prove decisive. It is slightly uphill, which might favour Van Aert on paper given the form he showed in taking stage one at Bodmin.

“It will be hard to control,” said Hayter, although he does at least have a full team behind him, whereas Van Aert has only three support riders at Jumbo-Visma having lost the German Tony Martin on Thursday and the Australian Chris Harper on Monday. He expects Alaphilippe’s Deceuninck-Quickstep to see opportunities “to blow the race apart”, and added: “Van Aert can take bonus seconds if he sprints for them, so I will have to do the same.” He has, however, put himself in with a chance of becoming the youngest winner of the British Tour since Dylan van Baarle in 2014, and he seems to have the maturity as well as the speed to do it.

Tour of Britain Women 2024 - Analysing the Contenders

B ritish Cycling and Lloyds Bank have taken over the Tour of Britain Women , formerly called the Women's Tour, for its ninth edition, which will start on June 6 in Welshpool and finish on June 9 in Manchester.

There was some concern that the race might not happen again this year after SweetSpot, the former organisers, entered liquidation after financial difficulties. The event, which held its inaugural edition in 2014, was already cancelled twice in 2020 and last year, and another cancellation would have marked a serious loss for women's racing in Great Britain.

However, the event remains part of the Women's WorldTour , and despite the initial uncertainty and being reduced to four days, still promises to offer the peloton and fans alike action-packed racing across four hilly, puncheur-style stages before the overall winner is crowned in Manchester.

There are currently 88 riders set to start the Tour of Britain Women, and although the field size is smaller than some of the other events that are part of the top-tier racing series, a number of riders stand out as potential contenders for the overall classification.

Cyclingnews highlights the riders to watch for the 2024 Tour of Britain Women.

Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx-Protime)

There is no shortage of potential stage winners and overall contenders that will line up as part of the SD Worx-Protime squad. World Champion Lotte Kopecky will be the out-right favourite for both endeavours.

After taking a break to recover following the Spring Classics, Kopecky recently returned to competition in support of her teammate Lorena Wiebes at the RideLondon Classique.

The unbeatable duo did not disappoint, with Koepcky offering her services as a lead-out extraordinaire for Wiebes, who won all three stages and the overall classification.

The pair could swap roles for the Tour of Britain Women's punchier four-day parcour, where the hilly terrain and two categorised mountains on each stage could favour Kopecky's skillset.

Of course, the team also includes Chantal van den Broek-Blaak , Elena Cecchini and Christine Majerus, who are likely to be in support roles, along with sprint lead-out Barbara Guarischi, for a well-rounded team.

Lizzie Deignan (Team Great Britain)

Lidl-Trek is not registered to participate in the Tour of Britain Women, but the event has always been an important one for home-favourite Lizzie Deignan.

The former World Champion has won the overall classification on two occasions, in 2026 and 2019, while her trade teammate Elisa Longo Borghini won the last edition, held in 2022, by just one second ahead of rival Grace Brown.

Deignan started this season determined to turn the tide after a winless 2023, and while she had a strong start to her spring campaign, it came to an abrupt halt after a crash in the first ten kilometres of the Tour of Flanders. X-rays showed Deignan suffered a fracture to the radial head of her right arm and she was forced to take a month away from racing.

She has slowly re-built her form having raced in support roles at La Vuelta Femenina and RideLondon Classique, and looks to be ready to lead Team Great Britain for their next home event.

It is a strong squad, too, with Olympic gold medallist and seven-time track world champion Elinor Barker, Elynor Bäckstedt, Anna Henderson, Millie Couzens, and Flora Perkins.

Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL)

Team dsm-firmenich PostNL also arrives with a powerful line-up that includes climber Abi Smith, time trialist Daniek Hengeveld, and sprint specialist Charlotte Kool, with her trusted lead-out team of Franziska Koch and Rachele Barbieri.

For the overall classification, however, we've chosen British national champion Pfeiffer Georgi because of her all-around ability across puncheur-style terrain and in both breakaways and reduced-group sprints.

She has had a strong spring campaign, and while lacking a victory, finished third at Omloop van het Hageland, fifth at Trofeo Alfredo Binda, third at Paris-Roubaix and fourth at Amstel Gold Race.

Her highest place in this event was eighth overall in the 2021 edition, but this year's route could present a perfect opportunity for Georgi to secure a podium spot in the GC.

Henrietta Christie (Human Powered Health)

A smaller field could offer more opportunities for those riders who are just on the cusp of a big victory, and with a hilly route on offer, Henrietta Christie certainly fits this bill.

The New Zealander frequently ranks inside the top 10 at major events and often works in a support role, too.

However, at the Tour of Britain Women, Christie will be in a leadership role at Human Powered Health with a team ready to support her to what could become a debut win on the Women's WorldTour and a top place in the overall standings.

The 22-year-old captured her first podium in European racing at Gran Premio Ciudad de Eibar and then recently competed at the Vuelta an Andalucia Women, where she was inside the top 10 in three of the four stages and sixth place overall.

These are results that bode well for her goals as she leads the team at the Tour of Britain Women, which also includes home rider Alice Wood, Barbara Malcotti, Linda Zanetti, Silvia Zanardi, and Marit Raaijmakers.

Letizia Paternoster (Liv Alula Jayco)

Letizia Paternoster might be more recognized as a sprinter, but the Italian multi-discipline racer has shown her pedigree in hilly races as well.

While she has a major focus on the track events at this summer's Paris Olympic Games , she also enjoys the hilly Spring Classics and stage races. This spring she finished fourth at Ronde van Drenthe, third at Dwars door Vlaanderen and ninth at Tour of Flanders, which shows her power on some of the sport's most challenging short and steep ascents.

She recently returned to competition at RideLondon Classique, and she hasn't seemed to skip a beat, finishing second into Colchester, fourth into Maldon and eighth into London, wrapping up the three-day event in fourth in the final standings behind overall winner Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime), runner-up Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich Post NL) and third-placed Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime).

The hillier route offered at Tour of Britain Women could give Paternoster the edge over her sprinter rivals, so watch for her to be among those in contention for the overall victory.

ROME (AP) — Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia on Sunday with the race’s biggest margin of victory in nearly six decades — earning a third Grand Tour trophy to go with his two Tour de France titles.

Pogacar, riding a pink bike to go with his pink jersey, shorts and helmet, crossed safely in the main pack to conclude the mostly ceremonial final stage of the three-week race in Rome, ending with an advantage of 9 minutes, 56 seconds over runner-up Daniel Martinez.

Geraint Thomas finished third overall, 10:24 behind.

The last time there was a bigger margin of victory in the Giro came in 1965, when Vittorio Adorni won by 11:26.

Pogacar, a Slovenian with UAE Team Emirates, also won six stages in the race, the most since Eddy Merckx also won six in 1973.

“Winning any bike race is important but winning the Giro, especially like this, is really incredible,” Pogacar said.

Now Pogacar will attempt to rest and recover in time to make an attempt at winning his third Tour title, with cycling’s biggest race starting on June 29 with four stages in Italy.

Pogacar will be attempting to become the first rider to win the Giro and the Tour in the same year since Marco Pantani in 1998.

“This was the big goal for the first part of the season. Now finally I’ll have a bit of rest before the second part, which could be the more important part,” Pogacar said. “We’ll see.”

Belgian rider Tim Merlier won the final stage in a sprint ahead of Jonathan Milan by the Colosseum. It was Merlier’s fourth career win at the Giro and third this year.

Milan, the Italian sprinter who also won three stages in the race, had a mechanical issue and needed to change his bike at the start of the last lap. He then managed to catch up with the main pack and almost grabbed another victory.

The 125-kilometer (78-mile) mostly flat final stage finished with a circuit through the center of the capital that was completed eight times, taking riders past the Baths of Caracalla, the Roman Forum, the Tiber River and the Circus Maximus before the finish on cobblestones near the Arch of Constantine.

Pogacar entered the Giro for the first time this year and made an immediate impact. He finished second in the opening stage in Turin and gained time on almost all of his direct rivals. Then he won the second stage, grabbed the leader’s pink jersey and kept on increasing his advantage day after day.

Pogacar won the Tour in 2020 and 2021 and then finished second behind Jonas Vingegaard in 2022 and 2023.

Vingegaard is hoping to defend his Tour title despite a crash in April that left him with several broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Who is Jack Rhodes? The Ulster magician tipped favourite to win Britain’s Got Talent

Jack Rhodes on Britain's Got Talent

Jack Rhodes has cemented himself as a firm favourite among Britain’s Got Talent fans, and he’s now in with a shot of taking the crown.

The magician will perform for one last time in the final, hoping to impress judges Simon Cowell , Amanda Holden , Alesha Dixon , and Bruno Tonioli , as well as the voting public.

This weekend will see one act walk away with a £250,000 prize, plus a spot on the bill at the Royal Variety Performance 2024.

Competing alongside Jack to be crowned BGT winner are: Alex Mitchell, Trixy, Abigail & Afronita, Northants Sings Out, Haribow, Innocent Masuku, Ssaulabi Performance Troupe, Mike Woodhams, and Sydnie Christmas .

Who is Jack Rhodes?

Jack Rhodes on Britain's Got Talent

Jack is one of many magicians to have graced the stage this year, but one of the lucky few to sail through to live shows.

Aged 27, Jack hails from Ulverston in Cumbria.

In stark contrast to his magician antics, however, Jack worked as a nuclear engineer until January 2024.

When his performing took off, though, he quit his day job to be a full-time magician.

Speaking during his BGT audition, Jack joked that his parents ‘weren’t impressed’ at the time, saying: ‘My dad used to call me a part-time wizard… sorry, full-time moron. He’s not my biggest fan.’

In 2023, he started sharing his journey on his blog, writing in July that year: ‘It’s a big day today. I’ve officially started a “career break” from my day job as a nuclear engineer.

Jack Rhodes on Britain's Got Talent

‘I’ve just spent the past 5 months working 12-hour shifts every single day to save enough to afford “giving it a shot financially”.’

‘But what does “giving it a shot” mean?’, he asked.

‘Well, for me, at least, it means pursuing a career as a content creator.’

Jack started to share his tricks on social media, later telling OK! Magazine that he had become a ‘social hermit crab’ as he stayed at home, performing to his camera in the garage.

‘Britain’s Got Talent is a good way of doing a bit more live stuff which is super exciting as I have got a tour I am doing at the end of October,’ he teased.

‘I’m hoping BGT is a good way of getting eyes on that and maybe selling some more tickets.

‘This whole thing is about trying to move from the content world and to get to live audiences and have that amazing reaction from them.’

Throughout Britain’s Got Talent, Jack has amazed viewers and the panel with his skills and comedy.

Jack Rhodes on Britain's Got Talent with Ant and Dec

Taking to the stage for the first time and admitting that his dream was to perform in Las Vegas, Jack revealed that he had actually been a contestant before.

In a previous series, he performed as ‘the invisible magician’, aka The Phantom, blowing minds with his tricks despite not being seen by anyone.

Playing on this, Jack remarked that he is like a ‘ninja’ and brought back elements of Phantom’s act for his own.

After wowing the judges and receiving four yesses, Jack was through to the semi-finals, where he had us all scratching our heads once more with a card trick.

The impressive performance promoted intense online speculation and even YouTube videos analysing how it was done.

But, what has Jack got up his sleeve for the final?

Well, whatever happens, he’s garnered some famous fans already, including 2016 Britain’s Got Talent winner, Richard Jones.

The fellow magic star said on Instagram: ‘I’ve realised he has a massive following on YouTube and social media because he does really funny edits.

‘When people go on the show who already have hundreds and thousands of followers and fans, that’s great for someone in BGT.’

ZLM Tour: Rune Herregodts carves fastest time on time trial and wins stage 1

Tim Van Dijke second, Gleb Syritsa third in Westkapelle to open five-day race

LIDO DI CAMAIORE ITALY MARCH 04 Rune Herregodts of Belgium and Team Intermarche Wanty sprints during the 59th TirrenoAdriatico 2024 Stage 1 a 10km individual trial time from Lido di Camaiore to Lido di Camaiore UCIWT on March 04 2024 in Lido di Camaiore Italy Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Wanty) won the stage 1 time trial and took the first leader’s jersey of the ZLM Tour . He posted the time to beat from among the early starters, posting 17:16 on the 14.7km ITT, and never relinquished the hot seat.

Tim Van Dijke (Visma-Lease a Bike) was the final rider on the course and was the only rider to come close, finishing 12 seconds back as runner-up. Astana Qazaqstan teammates Gleb Syritsa and Max Walker were 17 and 19 seconds back, respectively, with Syritsa securing the final podium spot.

The five-day stage race commenced from Westkapelle for the 14.7km individual time trial, set on the edge of the North Sea under blue skies in the late afternoon sunshine. The narrow roads twisted and turned on a flat but technical course in a counter-clockwise direction through the Dutch city.

From among the early starters of the 130 riders, Fabio van den Bossche (Alpecin-Deceuninck) set the early benchmark under 18 minutes at 17:59. It was not until another 17 rides crossed the line that Eddy Patrick (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), the Australian junior time trial champion in 2019, took the hot seat with 17:54.

Herregodts then blasted across the line to drop the fastest time by 38 seconds. Walker also went under Patrick’s time by 20 seconds to put him in provisional second place, but then he was bumped down to third by Astana teammate Gleb Syritsa by two seconds, but neither but threatened Herregodts.

During the 60-plus minutes Herregodts rested in the hot seat, race organisers converted his stint in the chair into a pop-up barber shop and had someone give him a quick hair trim.

Mike Teunissen (Intermarché-Wanty) was the only previous winner of the ZLM Tour on the start Wednesday, the Dutch rider taking the GC title in 2019, but he finished 45 seconds off the best time, with 42 riders to go.

As the setting sun cast shadows across the small descent to the finish, Tim Van Dijke (Visma-Lease a Bike) took the course as the final rider in the field. He was seventh in the prologue last year, but that was just 6.6km and this year’s time trial was more than double the distance, and he finished second overall, 12 seconds down on Herrogodts.
