How to Travel from Rome to the Cinque Terre by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

tour from rome to cinque terre

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

The Cinque Terre is one of Italy's most postcard-perfect destinations. Made up of five coast-hugging villages, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, the Cinque Terre is a UNESCO-protected national park and all the villages are connected by a railway and a hiking trail. The best way to access the park is through the nearby city of La Spezia , which lies to the east. From the Italian capital of Rome, Cinque Terre is about 281 miles (453 kilometers) away. La Spezia marks the beginning of the Italian Riviera , which spans all the way up the coast to the French border.

At a glance, flying may seem like the quickest way to travel from Rome to the Cinque Terre, but the closest airport is over 50 miles (80 kilometers) away. You could fly to one of the airports near the villages, but you will have to factor in the cost of a rental car or train ticket to get yourself the rest of the way.

By far, taking the train is the easiest way to travel in Italy. There are many direct services between Rome and La Spezia, plus you can transfer directly to the regional line that will bring you to the Cinque Terre. If you're on a tight budget, you could also take the bus to La Spezia, but you will still need to take the regional train to make it the rest of the way. Driving is also an option, but it can be slower than taking the train, and you will not be able to bring your rental car into any of the villages when you get there.

How to Get from Rome to the Cinque Terre

To get to the Cinque Terre from Rome by train, you will need to book your ticket with Trenitalia for La Spezia. Once you arrive at La Spezia Centrale Station, you'll have to transfer to a regional train heading to Monterosso. This train will stop at all five villages, so you can choose to get off at Riomaggiore and travel north through the park or ride all the way to the end to Monterosso and make your way south along the coast.

Trains from Rome to La Spezia leave from Roma Termini Station throughout the day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. You may also be able to catch an even faster train from another train station if you leave later in the evening. For example, the direct 8:35 p.m. train that leaves from Roma Tiburtina Station only takes about 3 hours.

If you wish to fly to the Cinque Terre from Rome, you'll have to fly to one of two closest cities, Genoa or Pisa , and travel the rest of the way by bus, train, or car. However, you should know that none of these cities are very close to the Cinque Terre, and you will still need to spend at least an hour or two in transit before you arrive. Many people who wish to fly like to combine their trip to the Cinque Terre with a few days in one of these cities, which are all well-worth visiting on their own.

Genoa is about 56 miles (90 kilometers) north of the Cinque Terre and direct flights offered by Alitalia can be found for as low as $80. Alternatively, Pisa is further away with 72 miles (115 kilometers) between the airport and Cinque Terre and flights tend to be a little more expensive, starting at $120. The flight to Pisa takes 55 minutes while the flight to Genoa takes 1 hour, 5 minutes, so there's not much of a difference in terms of how much time you'll spend in the air. Deciding which airport to fly to really comes down to which city you want to see more. Or, you could plan to fly to Pisa on your way there and fly back through Genoa on your way home, or vice versa.

Like taking the train, you will first have to take the bus to La Spezia and then transfer to the Cinque Terre by the regional rail line. You can either take the Marino Bus , which takes about 8 to 9 hours and tends to be slightly more expensive or Flixbus , which offers fares for as low as $17 and direct buses to La Spezia that take as little as 5 hours, 30 minutes. You'll find the cheapest fares on the night buses, which leave Rome just after midnight and arrive in La Spezia at 7 a.m. If you don't mind sleeping upright on a bus, this is a great way to save money on accommodation.

If you want to skip the hassle of trains and transfers, you can rent a car in Rome and drive straight to the Cinque Terre on your own. Note that cars are not recommended for visiting the Cinque Terre as the villages are car-free. You'll need to leave your car at one of the parking lots outside the villages. If it's your first time driving in Italy, make sure you familiarize yourself with the rules of the road before making your decision.

The drive will take you about 5 hours if you don't make any stops along the way. From Rome, take the A1/E35 north for 145 miles (234 kilometers) until you can take the Firenze Nord exit to merge onto A11/E76. After passing the city of Lucca , take the exit onto A12/E80 and drive north for 42 miles (67 kilometers) until you can take the exit toward Carrodano/Levanto. You'll follow this winding road all the way until you reach the entrance of the park near Monterosso al Mare. If you'd rather begin your trip from the south, you'll take the earlier exit toward La Spezia and drive through the city along the SP370 until you arrive at Riomaggiore.

What to See in the Cinque Terre

The most popular thing to do when visiting the Cinque Terre is to hike the route between all five villages. Keep in mind, however, that you will need to purchase a card to use the paths. Although you can see the whole park in a day, there are hotels in each village, where you can find excellent views. The villages get very busy with tourists coming in for the day, so it might be nice to wake up early and enjoy the town before the rush gets going.

Each village offers a lot to see, so you'll want to take your time getting to know each one. Wherever you go, you'll have no problem finding restaurants with fresh seafood and marvelous seaside views. If you don't have enough time to hike through the villages, it's possible to take a sailing tour from La Spezia and see them from the water.

A direct train leaving from the Roma Tiburtina Station takes about three hours.

Cinque Terre is about 280 miles from Rome, depending on your specific destination.

The flight time is only one hour, but you'll land about an hour away from Cinque Terre, so you'll need to factor in extra transit time as well as pre-flight airport time. It ends up being close to the train travel time of three hours.

How to get to Cinque Terre from Rome by train, car, plane

Our essential guide to help you get to Cinque Terre from Rome. Travel tips for going from Rome to Cinque Terre by train, car, or plane.

Rome is about 460 Km South of Cinque Terre.

Between the city and the pretty Ligurian coastal towns of Cinque Terre lies part of Lazio and the whole of Tuscany, two of the largest regions in Italy.

However, getting to Cinque Terre from Rome is easy and less tiring or daunting than this long distance may suggest!

Thanks to great train connections and a good system of motorways, it is possible to reach Cinque Terre from Rome in about 4 or 5 hours, depending on the means of transport chosen.

I have traveled from Rome to Cinque Terre several times, the last one just this June just passed, when I went to Cinque Terre with the kids .

We took the train and had a pleasant and stress-free trip.

I share the best way to get from Rome to Cinque Terre in this quick transport guide based on my travel experience along this stretch.

How to get to Cinque Terre from Rome: chart

As you can see, the fastest and most comfortable way to get to Cinque Terre from Rome is the train.

Let’s look at the different options in more detail.

Getting from Rome to Cinque Terre by train

The best way to get to Cinque Terre from Rome is the train.

Trenitalia has several high-speed trains connecting Rome to La Spezia in less than 4 hours and, from La Spezia, there are trains every few minutes bringing you to the Cinque Terre town of your choice.

Monteorsso Train Station, Cinque Terre, Italy

While the train trip from Rome to Cinque Terre is not direct, this change in La Spezia is quick and easy. I have just done with the kids this summer, so I can tell you exactly how to do it.

Start by booking your ticket Rome to La Spezia and La Spezia to your destination online (two separate tickets).

I like booking my Italian train tickets on Trenitalia , the website of the main railway provider in Italy.

By using this site, you deal directly with the train provider, skip intermediaries and potential extra charges and you can be sure you are always looking at the official schedule.

If you are unfamiliar with it, you can read here >>> our complete guide to train travel in Italy .

Top tip: I recommend you book your high-speed train ticket in advance. This usually means you get better prices and a wider selection of seats, important especially if traveling with family or with people you want to sit with.

On the day of departure, you only need to get to the station a few minutes before your departure time: large displays in the station departure hall, on the train platform and on the train carriage itself will help you find your train, carriage and seat.

Enjoy your journey until La Spezia.

Once in La Spezia, you leave the high-speed train and catch the regional train to Cinque Terre for the last leg of your journey.

This was the part of the trip that worried me the most, but it turned out to be very easy!

As we stepped off the train from Rome, we realized that the Cinque Terre train would arrive in less than 5 minutes at the platform right in front of us.

This was well indicated and meant we didn’t have to get into the station, negotiate stairs or wander aimlessly in an unfamiliar station: the trains are scheduled to provide a seamless journey and we are happy to report they do!

Since I was so worried about missing the train, I hadn’t bought my ticket in advance, so I solved the problem by quickly going online onto the Trenitalia website and buying it there and then.

However, I recommend you don’t do like me but, rather, get the regional train ticket as the same time as the high-speed one.

In the unlikely event of you missing your coincidence, you can usually use your local ticket for the train after, up to 4h after the time on the ticket.

Please always check the specific rules of your ticket before availing of this option!

The regional train from La Spezia to Cinque Terre is very different from the high-speed one.

This train is clean and well kept; however, it is more of a commuter train so there is no assigned seating.

We were happy to notice that despite visiting in the high season, we didn’t have any issues finding space on this train, we were always able to sit (there were 3 of us) and we highly enjoyed the air conditioning, which was a life saver in the scoring Italian summer heat!

Good to know! If you are traveling with young kids, you may be happy to hear that we found the local train to have sufficient space for strollers. We saw several families able to keep the stroller open with their child napping while getting on and off the Cinque Terre train!

Railway line in Cinque Terre from a high spot on the coast

The train from La Spezia to Cinque Terre stops in all the towns and only takes a handful of minutes to get from one to the next.

Most of the journey is in tunnels; however, occasionally the train follows the coast in the open air and, when it does, the views are lovely!

The Cinque Terre train stations are almost all in the town centers. An exception is that in Corniglia , which is at the basis of the town and requires a short bus journey (or negotiating about 400 steps) to get into the village proper.

Getting to Cinque Terre from Rome by car

Getting from Rome to Cinque Terre by car is pretty straightforward.

Most of the driving is along motorways which are wide and well kept. However, we do not recommend driving to this area for a couple of reasons.

The first one is parking: parking in Cinque Terre is hard to find and very expensive. We only recommend you come here by car if you have no alternative or you have accommodation that can offer free parking.

The second reason is the type of local roads in this area.

In many cases, coming into the towns requires driving onto roads that are bendy and narrow.

This can be difficult if you are driving with people who suffer from motion sickness and can prove stressful if you are used to motorway driving or are maneuvering a large vehicle.

Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre

That said, if you have a car, do not despair!

If you arrive equipped with patience and a bit of cash, you can find parking in the towns or in La Spezia.

Parking spaces in Cinque Terre are in:

  • Monterosso, Parking Fegina : 300 spaces. 2.5€ per hour | 25€ per day.
  • Monterosso Parking Loreto : 100 spaces. 2.5€ per hour | 25€ per day
  • Parking Vernassoa (Vernazza) : outside of the town but served by a handy shuttle, this parking offers the advantage of an online booking system. Quote on request but filling out the form on their website
  • Vernazza Parking : 90 spaces, along the state road Prezzo: 2.3€ per hour | 15 € per day
  • Corniglia parking : 60 spaces. 2.5 € per hour
  • Manarola Parking : 80 spaces. 2.5€ per hour | 20€ per day
  • Parcheggio Riomaggiore : 170 spaces. 4€ per hour | 35 € per day

Getting to Cinque Terre from Rome by plane

Getting from Rome to Cinque Terre by plane is possible but time-consuming and uncomfortable due to the many changes of transport required.

The closest airport to Cinque Terre you can reach from Rome is Genoa.

From here, you need to reach Genoa train station (usually Genoa Nervi or genoa Piazza Principe) and then catch the train to Cinque Terre for about 1h.

If you factor in the time it takes to get to Fiumicino airport from Rome, check-in and reach the train station, it is easy to see how much more convenient the train is. So we only recommend flying from Rome to Cinque Terre if there is no other option.

I hope you found this quick guide to getting to Cinque Terre from Rome useful. Safe travels!

I found this fun video someone took while driving in the Cinque Terre… And while it doesn’t really make my point about how bad of an idea it is to bring a car into this part of the world, I’m sharing it with you anyway. Because even if this guy got lucky and was on the roads when no one else was, it doesn’t change the fact that the roads are tiny and twisting. Just trust me, don’t drive there. 20. ARBITRATION CLAUSE & CLASS ACTION WAIVER – IMPORTANT – PLEASE REVIEW AS THIS AFFECTS YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS

Arbitration. You agree that all disputes between you and us (whether or not such dispute involves a third party) with regard to your relationship with us, including without limitation disputes related to these terms of service, your use of the services, and/or rights of privacy and/or publicity, will be resolved by binding, individual arbitration under the American arbitration association's rules for arbitration of consumer-related disputes and you and we hereby expressly waive trial by jury; provided, however, that to the extent that you have in any manner violated or threatened to violate our intellectual property rights, we may seek injunctive or other appropriate relief in any state or federal court in the state of new york. Discovery and rights to appeal in arbitration are generally more limited than in a lawsuit, and other rights that you and we would have in court may not be available in arbitration. A party who intends to seek arbitration must first send to the other, by certified mail, a written Notice of Intent to Arbitrate ("Notice"). The Notice to InterRail should be addressed to: 15 Hancock Avenue, Newton, MA 02459 ("Arbitration Notice Address"). The Notice must (a) describe the nature and basis of the claim or dispute; and (b) set forth the specific relief sought ("Demand"). If we do not reach an agreement to resolve the claim within 30 days after the Notice is received, you may commence an arbitration proceeding. You may bring claims only on your own behalf.  Neither you nor we will participate in a class action or class-wide arbitration for any claims covered by this agreement to arbitrate. YOU ARE GIVING UP YOUR RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE AS A CLASS REPRESENTATIVE OR CLASS MEMBER ON ANY CLASS CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE AGAINST US INCLUDING ANY RIGHT TO CLASS ARBITRATION OR ANY CONSOLIDATION OF INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATIONS. You also agree not to participate in claims brought in a private attorney general or representative capacity, or consolidated claims involving another person's account, if we are a party to the proceeding. This dispute resolution provision will be governed by the Federal Arbitration Act and not by any state law concerning arbitration. In the event the American Arbitration Association is unwilling or unable to set a hearing date within one hundred and sixty (160) days of filing the case, then either we or you can elect to have the arbitration administered instead by the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services. Judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court having competent jurisdiction. Any provision of applicable law notwithstanding, the arbitrator will not have authority to award damages, remedies or awards that conflict with these Terms of Service. You agree that regardless of any statute or law to the contrary, any claim or cause of action arising out of, related to or connected with the use of the Services or these Terms of Services must be filed within one (1) year after such claim of action arose or be forever banned.

Severability. If the prohibition against class actions and other claims brought on behalf of third parties contained above is found to be unenforceable, then all of the preceding language in this Arbitration section will be null and void. This arbitration agreement will survive the termination of your relationship with us.

Moreover, some jurisdictions do not permit mandatory arbitration of consumer disputes or choice of governing law, so this clause may not apply to you if your case falls within one of these jurisdictions.

21. Governing Law

These Terms of Service shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, including its conflicts of law rules, and the United States of America.

22. Modification

We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to modify or replace any of these Terms of Service, or change, suspend, or discontinue the Services (including without limitation, the availability of any feature, database, or content) at any time. We may also impose limits on certain features and services or restrict your access to parts or all of the Services without notice or liability. While we will timely provide notice of modifications, it is also your responsibility to check these Terms of Service periodically for changes. Your continued use of the Services following notification of any changes to these Terms of Service constitutes acceptance of those changes, which will apply to your continued use of the Services going forward. Your use of the Services is subject to the Terms of Service in effect at the time of such use.

23. Miscellaneous

Entire Agreement and Severability. These Terms of Service are the entire agreement between you and us with respect to the Services, including use of the Site, and supersede all prior or contemporaneous communications and proposals (whether oral, written or electronic) between you and us with respect to the Services. If any provision of these Terms of Service is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that these Terms of Service will otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable. The failure of either party to exercise in any respect any right provided for herein shall not be deemed a waiver of any further rights hereunder

Force Majeure. We shall not be liable for any failure to perform our obligations hereunder where such failure results from any cause beyond our reasonable control, including, without limitation, mechanical, electronic or communications failure or degradation.

Assignment. These Terms of Service are personal to you, and are not assignable, transferable, or sublicensable by you except with our prior written consent. We may assign, transfer, or delegate any of our rights and obligations hereunder without consent.

Agency. No agency, partnership, joint venture, or employment relationship is created as a result of these Terms of Service and neither party has any authority of any kind to bind the other in any respect.

Notices. You agree that, unless otherwise specified in these Term of Service, all communications under these Terms of Service will be made through email. Electronic notices should be sent to [email protected].

No Waiver. Our failure to enforce any part of these Terms of Service shall not constitute a waiver of our right to later enforce that or any other part of these Terms of Service. Waiver of compliance in any particular instance does not mean that we will waive compliance in the future. In order for any waiver of compliance with these Terms of Service to be binding, we must provide you with written notice of such waiver through one of our authorized representatives.

Headings. The section and paragraph headings in these Terms of Service are for convenience only and shall not affect their interpretation.

Imagine houses clinging to steep cliffs, overlooking an emerald sea; streets filled with the aroma of freshly cooked seafood and local pastries; vineyards perched on terraces sculpted into the hillsides.

Humans and Nature: A Beautiful Symphony

The awe doesn’t stop at the scenic views. The Cinque Terre region is a magnificent testament to humanity’s ability to live in symbiosis with nature. Locals have not only adapted to their rugged environment, but they’ve enriched it with olive groves, vineyards, and citrus orchards. This coexistence between man and nature, tradition and landscape, creates a tangible, almost magical bond that you will feel as you walk along the trails or sample the local produce.

Overnight in La Spezia: Reflect and Rejuvenate

Cinque Terre Day Trip: How to Plan the BEST Day Trip to Cinque Terre!

Planning a day trip to Cinque Terre? You’ve come to the right place!

In this article I have outlined everything you need to know to enjoy an awesome Cinque Terre day trip, regardless of where you’re travelling from.

You will find out how to get to Cinque Terre from all the major cities in the area like Florence and Milan, the best things to do in one day in Cinque Terre, how to get around, where to eat and much more!

The five towns that compose Cinque Terre; Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, are amongst the most famous and most beautiful places in Italy, and it’s easy to see why.

With their colourful pastel houses, narrow streets, charming harbours and delicious focaccia, these small fishing villages are like nowhere else in the world.

My father was born and raised in La Spezia, a city just 20 minutes away from Cinque Terre, so I’ve been lucky enough to visit these charming towns plenty of times over the years.

This Cinque Terre day trip guide includes all the key information, as well as my local tips and insights. So what are you waiting for? Let’s dive in and start planning the perfect Cinque Terre day trip!

How to get to Cinque Terre

Getting to Cinque Terre for a day trip is fairly straightforward and can be done from a range of cities and popular hotspots in the area.

La Spezia to Cinque Terre

If you plan to do a Cinque Terre day trip, I highly recommend you do so starting from La Spezia (and I don’t say this just because my father is from this Ligurian city).

La Spezia can easily be reached by train from all the major Italian cities ( Florence , Rome , Milan , you name it), and from here, the beautiful towns of Cinque Terre are just a stone’s throw away.

From La Spezia Centrale you can take the local train to Cinque Terre. It runs regularly throughout the day, takes less than 20 minutes and costs less than 5 EUR.

If you prefer to have a local guide showing you around, telling you about the history of Cinque Terre, you can join a guided tour from La Spezia to Cinque Terre .

Florence to Cinque Terre day trip

While I personally think La Spezia is the best city to set off on your Cinque Terre day trip from, I’m conscious your starting city will ultimately depend on your Italy itinerary .

As such, I have outlined below how you can travel to Cinque Terre from other famous Italian cities. For example, Cinque Terre is one of the best day trips from Florence .

Getting from Florence to Cinque Terre by train is relatively easy. There’s an regional   train that takes two hours to travel the 170km between the two.

By car, it’s an hour and a half. This makes a Florence to Cinque Terre day trip something that’s definitely doable (although admittedly with a little too much time spent travelling).

Alternatively, you can also join a guided Florence to Cinque Terre day tour . That way, you won’t have to worry about driving, parking, or having to figure out train times.

Pisa to Cinque Terre day trip

If you want to do a Pisa to Cinque Terre day trip, you can easily drive there, as it’s only an hour and 45 minute drive along the coast.

Or you can take the train – the fastest takes just over an hour to reach Monterosso, with a change involved at La Spezia. This is probably the best option for a day trip if you’re not staying in La Spezia itself.

If you don’t want to deal with train changes, you can join an organised tour, like this small group Pisa to Cinque Terre tour , which includes also a boat tour of the coast.

Milan to Cinque Terre day trip

Personally, a Milan to Cinque Terre day trip by train isn’t something that I’d recommend. It’s doable, but the trip takes around three hours each way.

You almost spend more time travelling from Milan and back than you do in Cinque Terre.

Milanese people sometimes do it, as Cinque Terre is one of the best beaches near Milan , but that’s because they only head to the beach. If you actually want to see the towns, you’ll need longer.

That said, if you do want to do a Milan to Cinque Terre day trip, you might want to consider an organised tour to maximise your time.

Rome to Cinque Terre day trip

Surprisingly, even though it’s 327 km away, a Rome to Cinque Terre day trip can be done fairly easily (although I wouldn’t really recommend it).

You take the high-speed Trenitalia train to La Spezia, then change for the 5 Terre Express. Just make sure you get up super early!

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of changing trains, you could also book yourself a private tour from Rome to Cinque Terre .

It’s pricey, but if your Italy trip budget allows it, it will be the easiest and smoothest way to do a Rome to Cinque Terre day trip.

How to get around Cinque Terre

Regardless of how you arrive in Cinque Terre, whether you drive or take a train, once you arrive in Cinque Terre, the best way to get around is by train.

It may seem like a romantic idea to drive along the winding coastal roads of the Italian Riviera and lap up the scenery, but the reality is that it’s just not practical.

There is simply no parking in any of the main Cinque Terre towns, and the roads are very narrow and winding. Unless you’re a pro driver, it can be a bit daunting.

You can get express trains between the Cinque Terre towns. These are very cheap and super fast, running regularly throughout the day and only taking max five minutes from town to town.

To make train travel even more affordable, they created a Cinque Terre train card, which gives you access to unlimited train travel within the Cinque Terre National Park.

Depending on the Cinque Terre card you get, this also gives you access to the Sentiero Azzurro hiking trail .

If you join an organised tour , you won’t have to worry about how to get around Cinque Terre, as all transfers will be included in the tour price.

Best things to do on a Cinque Terre day trip

Whether you’ve booked a tour and you’d like some background information on the places you’ll be visiting, or if you’ll be doing your own independent Cinque Terre day trip and want an itinerary to follow, here’s a quick guide for your adventure.

Start your day in Monterosso al Mare

This is the biggest town in Cinque Terre, and therefore makes for the most sensible place to start your day trip; for one thing it’s easily accessed both by car and train.

Monterosso itself is pretty lively – it’s the only town of the Cinque Terre to have its own stretch of sandy beach (rather than a rocky one).

This charming town is divided into two parts – the newer and the older – both of which are connected by a cool underground tunnel.

The northernmost town of the Cinque Terre, Monterosso is one of the most popular destinations in the area. With its turquoise waters, drinking and dining options, picturesque streets and that beach, you can see why.

Hike part of the Sentiero Azzurro

The Sentiero Azzurro (literally “Blue Trail”) is the hiking path that connects the five towns of Cinque Terre. Personally, it reminded me of the Path of the Gods hike in Amalfi Coast .

Running for 12 km, this popular route is one of the main attractions in the area, as it offers up magnificent views of this Mediterranean coastline.

But don’t worry: you don’t have to tackle the entire cliffside path in one go. Realistically, if you’re visiting Cinque Terre on a day trip, it would be hard to fit the entire trail.

Instead, you can tackle it in sections. The most famous part of the Sentiero Azzurro is the one that connects Riomaggiore and Manarola, and is known as “La Via dell’Amore”, or “The Way of Love” in English.

It’s supposed to be the most beautiful, and it’s very popular also because it’s fairly short and easy. Unfortunately this section of the hike has been closed for years due to a landslide.

Instead, you can hike Monterroso to Vernazza. This section has a few challenging climbs, but it features incredibly scenic views over terraced vineyards, the sparkling blue and dramatic coastline. It takes an hour and a half to two hours.

Go for a dip in Vernazza

You will get your first glimpses of Vernazza from the Sentiero Azzurro hiking trail. Once you reach this beautiful town, be ready to be awed by its colourful houses, picturesque harbour and crystal clear waters.

Dating to the early 11th century, Vernazza is known not just for its picturesque location, but also its warren of medieval streets.

Here you’ll find charming piazzas, and the main attraction in town, the 12th-century Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia.

After your hike, you can spend some time going for a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, before getting ready to explore the other Cinque Terre towns.

Explore Corniglia

Sitting up on a cliff overlooking the sea 100 metres below, Corniglia is set in the middle of the five towns that make up Cinque Terre.

Vineyards surround the town, which is a nice bonus, but it’s the incredibly panoramic views of the sea that take centre stage here.

Quieter than some of the other Cinque Terre towns, possibly due to its lack of swimmable coastline (and its tiny population), Corniglia has a tranquil calm all of its own.

You probably won’t have time to hike from Vernazza to Corniglia, so I suggest taking one of the express trains. That way you’ll have longer to explore these picturesque towns.

Don’t miss out, book your La Spezia to Cinque Terre day tour here!

Take in the sights of Manarola

Manarola is often cited as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and a must-see on any Italy bucket list – it is the poster town for the Cinque Terre, after all.

Views of Manarola from afar, clinging to cliffs, are used on the front of guidebooks and various forms of tourist pamphlets. As a result, it’s the most popular and most visited of the Cinque Terre towns.

With its historic sights, colourful houses and rocky harbour, picturesque Manarola is the second smallest of the Cinque Terre villages.

Home to around 300 people, visiting this town on your day trip offers the chance to get lost among its storied streets and see some history: there’s Manarola Castle, a now-ruined 13th-century fortification, as well as the Church of San Lorenzo, dating to 1338.

Manarola is a good place to stop for a bite to eat. That would be because of La Scogliera. Made famous by Instagram, this seafood specialty restaurant serves up not only delicious dishes, but also stunning views.

But the best views arguably are of the town, from out at sea…

Do a boat tour along the coast

To really soak up the charm of the Cinque Terre, there’s no better way than to take a boat ride. This way you can see the colourful towns in all their glory, like sailors used to do back in the day.

This is actually part of the history of Cinque Terre. The houses are so colourful so that, back in the day, sailors could recognise their homes from afar.

If you’re on an organised tour to Cinque Terre from La Spezia, then you may already have a boat tour included in the itinerary, like this one .

But if you’re doing your Cinque Terre day trip independently, you can book yourself a tour that does only the boat cruise along the coast.

See the sunset in Riomaggiore

The southernmost of all the Cinque Terre towns, Riomaggiore dates back to the 13th century.

Compared to the other towns, it’s a little more down-to-earth, with actual life taking place in its streets, as opposed to just crowds of tourists. That’s not to say it’s not picturesque or popular – it’s both!

A real fishing village, Riomaggiore is made up of multi-storied pastel-colored houses that cling to the side of a steeply sloping valley. Take some time to wander and soak up views from higher up.

After exploring the charming streets of Riomaggiore, head down to the harbour to enjoy the sunset. Watching the sun go down in the sea, as it turns the sky and houses of Riomaggiore is simply magical.

Grab yourself some drinks, a few slices of pizza and fried fish nibbles, and get ready for the perfect end of the day to your Cinque Terre day trip.

Best Cinque Terre day tours

If the thought of hiring a car and navigating the narrow alleys of Cinque Terre fills you with fear, or if you really cannot be bothered to work out train timetables, then why not let someone else do it for you?

There are plenty of Cinque Terre day tours out there, all taking the stress out of your trip. Here are a few good ones to get you inspired…

Florence: Cinque Terre Day Trip with Optional Hike and Lunch

This full-day tour sees you travel from Florence to Cinque Terre on a fully packed day trip . Starting out with a bus journey from the Tuscan capital, you’ll head to Manarola first, where you get a walking tour of the town.

Then it’s on to Corniglia, enjoying lunch at one of its local restaurants (homemade pasta, anyone?); there’s also an optional hike to Vernazza (or you could hop on the train).

It’s then off to Monterosso before finally winding up for sunset at Riomaggiore. It’s the most comprehensive Florence to Cinque Terre day trip out there. Plus, it has very high reviews!

From La Spezia: Cinque Terre Tour by Train with Limoncino

If you don’t want such a long day trip, then this one might be better for you, as it starts from La Spezia (one of the most popular Mediterranean cruise ports).

From La Spezia, the Cinque Terre towns are a stone’s throw.  You’ll meet your local guide, who’ll take you via train first to Vernazza, then Monterroso where you’ll sample limoncino (a type of limoncello).

You will then take the train to Riomaggiore, to soak up some beautiful views of the coast.

From Milan: Cinque Terre Full-Day Guided Trip With Cruise

Wondering if there are tours available for a Milan to Cinque Terre day trip ? Look no further than this jam-packed option.

It sees you leaving Milan by coach and heading to Monterroso al Mare.

Here you can spend some time exploring the fishing village before jumping aboard a boat to cruise along the coast, lapping up views of the Cinque Terre villages from the sea – endlessly picturesque.

Is a Cinque Terre day trip worth it?

While you can embark on a day trip to the Cinque Terre, I would say that it’s not worth it.

Yes, you get to see the beautiful villages, and if you get up (very) early you can spend a good portion of time here, but this part of Italy really deserves more time.

Adding to your Italy itinerary at least one night here, and extending your Cinque Terre itinerary , means you can enjoy the towns, views, beaches and overall vibe much more fully.

La Spezia is a good place to stay, as it’s very close to the towns and much cheaper, or Portovenere (often called the “sixth town” of the Cinque Terre), a very picturesque town you wouldn’t be able to see on a day trip.

It will be much more rewarding! If you’re doing the day trip from Florence or Pisa that’s a bit more realistic, as they’re not as far from Cinque Terre.

Conversely, if you’re visiting from other major Italian cities, especially Rome or Milan (both of which require around six hours of travel time in total), I’d say it’s definitely less rewarding.

Travelling from these further off destinations means you’d be spending way too much time travelling, and not enough time actually in Cinque Terre!

Best time to visit Cinque Terre

Obviously, summer in Italy is the most popular time to visit the Bel Paese, and Cinque Terre too. However, I personally think the summer months are way too busy.

In high season you will find crowds absolutely everywhere, and even long queues of people hiking the Sentiero Azzurro. Needless to say, this will definitely dampen the whole experience.

Instead, I suggest planning your Cinque Terre day trip for the shoulder season. This falls from spring to early summer, and then again in early autumn.

The weather is still nice, the boats are still running, and the Sentiero Azzurro is still open for business.

If you’re travelling to Italy in winter  or at Christmas , I don’t recommend visiting Cinque Terre. This because late autumn and winter brings cold, rainy weather to the Cinque Terre region.

Tourist numbers drop considerably, and as such, most restaurants, bars and hotels are closed. Plus, the Sentiero Azzurro and other hiking trails are often closed (for safety reasons due to heavy rain).

Where to stay for the best Cinque Terre day trip

As I have already mentioned in this article, I suggest staying in La Spezia for the perfect Cinque Terre day trip (I actually always say this is also the best place to stay in Cinque Terre ).

Here are some accommodation options for every budget.

Budget:  Grand Hostel Manin   – This hostel has spacious dorms, a friendly atmosphere and is located in the heart of La Spezia. It’s the perfect place to use as base to explore Cinque Terre on a budget!

Click here to see prices and availability at Grand Hostel Manin!

Mid-range: Hotel Nella   – You will need a car to stay here, but the views and experience are worth it. Located in La Foce, the hills above La Spezia, this hotel has cosy rooms in a peaceful countryside setting.

Book your stay at Hotel Nella here!

Luxury: La Spezia by The First – Luxury Rooms & Suites   – If you want to treat yourself, this is the place to do so. Located in the heart of La Spezia, these modern rooms have a gorgeous view.

What to pack for your day tour to Cinque Terre

Besides the usual travel essentials , your travel insurance for Italy , and whatever is already on your  Italy packing list , you don’t really need anything specific to do a day trip to Cinque Terre.

That said, here are a couple absolute must-haves you don’t want to forget.

International adaptor  – It’s a bit more expensive than the country specific adaptors, but I like using an international adapter so that I only need that I can take everywhere

Power bank  – Whether it’s for Google Maps or taking photos of the charming streets of Vernazza, you don’t want your phone dying on you!

Steel water bottle  – If you want to cut down on your plastic consumption and save some cash in the process, don’t forget a water bottle that you can refill.

Fast drying towel  – If you plan on swimming in Cinque Terre, you’ll need one of these. I like these because they dry quickly and don’t take up a lot of space in your bag.

Comfortable shoes – Especially if you plan on hiking part of the Sentiero Azzurro, you will need shoes that you’re comfortable walking in!

Final thoughts on spending one day in Cinque Terre

There you have it, the ultimate guide to planning the perfect Cinque Terre day trip! Have you visited the villages of Cinque Terre before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Cinque Terre is a magical destination, which attracts millions of visitors every year. With its colourful houses and charming streets, there is simply nowhere else quite like it (although Positano is a close call).

As I have already mentioned in this article, I highly recommend spending more than one day in Cinque Terre, so that you can properly enjoy the vibe of these beautiful towns.

If your Italy itinerary doesn’t allow it, and you’re still set on doing a day trip, then please visit from La Spezia.

Travelling over from Rome, Florence or Milan means too much time spent travelling, and not enough in Cinque Terre. I want you to make the most of these beautiful towns!

I hope you found my Cinque Terre day trip guide useful. If you have any questions about spending one day in Cinque Terre, just let me know in the comments below!

Cinque Terre Travel Guide

The Cinque Terre , nestled along the northern coast of Italy, boasts a stunning landscape that has captured the hearts of millions of visitors. From its humble origins as fishing villages, it has evolved into a National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each of the five villages—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—offers its own unique charm, beckoning travelers to explore its colorful streets and breathtaking views.

tour from rome to cinque terre

Whether you're planning a day trip or a longer stay, this guide provides essential information to make the most of your visit to this picturesque region.

Location and Accessibility

Situated south of Genoa in northwest Italy, the Cinque Terre is easily accessible by train from major cities like Genoa, Pisa, Rome, Florence, and Nice. The local train line connecting La Spezia and Levanto conveniently stops at each village, allowing seamless travel between them. Visitors arriving by car are encouraged to park in La Spezia or Levanto due to restricted vehicle access within the villages.

Duration of Stay

While it's possible to experience the essence of the Cinque Terre in a day, dedicating three to four nights allows for a deeper exploration of each village, leisurely walks along coastal paths, and serene boat trips along the coastline.

tour from rome to cinque terre

Evening hours offer a more relaxed ambiance, perfect for savoring sunsets and authentic dining experiences. For those with more time, neighboring towns like Portovenere, Levanto, and La Spezia offer additional opportunities for exploration.

Best Time to Visit

To avoid crowds and scorching temperatures, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May and September. These months offer pleasant weather and fewer tourists compared to the peak season from Easter to October.

Spring presents ideal conditions for outdoor activities, while October and November may experience occasional rain showers. Adventurous travelers can enjoy quieter surroundings and discounted rates during the off-season months of December and January, albeit with limited amenities.

Accommodation Options

Accommodations within the Cinque Terre villages range from cozy guesthouses to charming apartment rentals. Booking accommodations well in advance is recommended, especially during peak season, to secure preferred options.

While Monterosso and Riomaggiore offer a wider selection of hotels, each village possesses its own distinct character, ensuring a memorable stay regardless of location. Contact us to give you personalized information!

Hiking Trails and Activities

Exploring the Cinque Terre on foot remains the quintessential experience, with a network of coastal and hillside paths offering stunning vistas at every turn. While some trails may pose moderate challenges, suitable footwear and a moderate level of fitness are sufficient for most routes.

The Sentiero Azzurro, or Blue Trail, offers scenic walks between villages, while additional paths provide opportunities for quieter hillside hikes. Visitors can also enjoy water-based activities such as sailing, kayaking, swimming, and diving along the rugged coastline. Don’t hesitate to ask us about our Cinque Terre tours to receive more information!

Transportation and Travel Cards

Trains serve as the primary mode of transportation within the Cinque Terre, offering frequent connections between villages and nearby cities. Travelers can purchase single-journey tickets or opt for the Cinque Terre Train Card, providing unlimited train travel along the coastal line.

Ferry services offer an alternative mode of transportation, providing panoramic views of the coastline and convenient access to neighboring towns. Cinque Terre Cards are required for hiking certain trails and can be obtained locally or online, granting access to designated paths and additional amenities.

Local Cuisine and Festivals

Indulge in the local culinary delights of the Cinque Terre, featuring fresh seafood, regional wines, and seasonal specialties. Explore quaint cafes and trattorias tucked away in the village streets, offering a taste of authentic Italian cuisine.

Throughout the year, various festivals celebrate local traditions and flavors, including Easter processions, the lemon festival in May, and the grape harvest festival in autumn. Embrace the exciting culture of the Cinque Terre through its culinary delights and lively festivities.

Essential Packing Tips

When packing for your Cinque Terre adventure, prioritize comfort and practicality. Opt for lightweight clothing, sturdy footwear, and sun protection to ensure a comfortable experience under the Mediterranean sun.

Carry a reusable water bottle for hydration, as water taps are available in each village for refills. Don't forget your swimsuit, as swimming opportunities abound along the coastline. Lastly, embrace the ease of communication, as English is widely spoken throughout the region.

Embark on a Journey of Discovery!

With its captivating scenery, rich history, and culture, the Cinque Terre beckons travelers to embark on a journey of discovery.

Whether you're drawn to its rugged hiking trails, tranquil beaches, or savory cuisine, this enchanting region promises an unforgettable experience for all who venture along its picturesque coastline.

Trying to figure out if those 2 nights are better spent in Cinque Terre (Monterosso) or Amalfi Coast .

If Amalfi Coast, then which area should we choose and what would be the best train route to the Amalfi Coast from Florence.

#5 of course the boats run in October. But often not in bad weather, as I said.

7 of the best places to cruise in Italy

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.
