The drive was good and safely, it had security belts as well as a comfy bed in the back. We we're heading to Torotoro for a tasty breakfast and lunch and had the opportunity to have a quick look at the town. We visited the caves and it was exciting (just be prepared to get a bit dirty while crawling :) ) We saw the footprints of the dinosaurs, the Canyon and we even hiked down there to see beautiful waterfalls (be prepared to walk a lot of stairs :D ) And of course the driver and guide were very friendly and helpful. Keep in mind, that like anywhere in the country is useful to have some basic knowledge in Spanish. :) Thank you for this wonderful day! Read more Written November 12, 2021

Where To Stay in Cochabamba, Bolivia

Nestled in the famous Andes, the Tunari peak is one of the highest summits in central Bolivia. The following Tunari Peak Tours and excursions of the surrounding areas offer friendly guides and a climactic experience worth a reasonable price tag.

The Tunari mountains running through Cochabamba, Bolivia allow climbers some of the most breathtaking aerial views of the natural landscape and cityscape below.

These are the 13 + 1 best ways to experience the beautiful and daring altitude hike up to the Tunari peak and explore the surrounding areas rich with culture, wildlife, and a diverse environment.

Tunari Peak tour

Here’s my post about the best places to stay in Cochabamba.

1. Keteka Tunari National Park Trekking Tour – 1 Day

Only 28 kilometers from the city of Cochabamba, the Tunari peak hike is one of the highest peaks in the center of Bolivia.

This one-day tour from the Morochata area of Cochabamba starts in the early morning and follows a local guide up a changing landscape with lakes, waterfalls, and indigenous natives.

Enjoy the views from the top after a few hours hike, and then return by evening time. This tour accepts groups of up to six people.

2. Hiking Cerro Tunari, 5050 meters – 1 Day

This tour begins in the early morning with private transportation pickup from your hotel in Cochabamba. It begins toward the suburb of Quillacollo, into the mountains of Cordillera Tunari, and past Andean villages. At Lake Macho, you will be provided a traditional Bolivian breakfast.

A three-hour ascent to the peak is next where you will enjoy a view of Cochabamba Valley. Enjoy a box lunch at the peak and take in the beautiful sights. Then, you will descend to a second mountain lake where the private transportation will await for your return to your hotel.

The duration of the entire tour is about 10 hours and requires a minimum of two participants. You will have a local tour guide with basic English speaking skills and may request a fluent English speaking tour guide.

3. Climbing Cerro Tunari, 5035 m – 1 Day

In the early morning, private transport will pick you up from you rhotel and take you through the suburb of Quillacollo, near to thermal springs of Liriuni, and through a forest of native Kewina trees. You will also see local llama herders and their village along the way.

The three hour ascent begins at Laguna Macho and through rugged terrain and mountain meadows. At the summit, you will enjoy a view of snow capped mountains and the Cochabamba Valley.

The private vehicle will be awaiting at Laguna Maqcho to return you to your hotel in Cochabamba. Breakfast and lunch are included.

4. Cerro Tunari 1 Day Trek Cochabamba Kanoo Tour – 1 Day

This tour is one of the best values and begins at 8 am with a scenic drive through rural Cochabamba in a private vehicle pickup from the hotel. The two hour drive takes you through llama herding villages and mountain scenery. At Lake Macho, enjoy a traditional Bolivian drink named “api” as an energy boost for the trek.

Along the trek, you will pass another lake, forests, and keep a keen eye out for wildlife and fossils. At the peak, you will eat a packed lunch and take in the view. On the return trek, you may dip your feet in the lake.

You will return via private vehicle between 5 – 7 pm. The maximum is a group of 6.

5. Tunari Mountain Tour – 1 Day

The tour includes hotel pick up and drop off, 2-3 hour hiking through the mountain terrain, and private transportation.

The tour picks up at the hotel early morning, and then it leaves for the Lake Macho at about 4600 m.

The bilingual tour guides will lead hikes through the forest and by the mountain lake. Species that you might see include llamas, condors, and viscachas (an Andean rodent).

After that, return to the pickup point at Lake Macho.

The group can range from 2-18 members.

6. Tunari “Condor” 2 Day Trek – 2 Days

The tour is provided by Berghotel Carolina and covers the area of Cochabamba Valley and Mount Tunari.

Day one, after a short bus ride from the Cochabamba city center, the tour will start at an altitude of 2900 meters and explore Cochabamba Valley and Cajon Lake. Upon arrival, search the forests for monkeys and sloths.

It is a loose gravel hike up the rest of the way to the peak where views of other mountain tops will greet you. The return trek will end at Lake Macho where you will enjoy a lovely mountain meal.

The community has a deal with the hotel to provide pack mules for the trek and to carry food and other equipment. This package is a perk for guests of the hotel!

8. Tunari Peak Tour – 1 Day

The day long tour provides a certified English speaking local guide, hotel or port pickup and dropoff, and an air conditioned vehicle transport. Usually, departure time will be 9 am and return time will be 6 pm with a tour duration of three hours.

12. 3-Day Toro Toro Dinosaur Footprints from Cochabamba City – 3 Days

The surrounding area of Tunari is known as Toro Toro, the nearby “Land of the Dinosaurs” because of the fossils found in the mountainous region here.

Here is the itinerary:

On day one, the tour picks up at the hotel at 7:30 am and departs from Cochabamba. It then travels to the park where you will stop at Bolivia’s deepest cave Umajalanta. Admire the stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

Dinner and rest at the hotel follows.

The tourists will get an early start after breakfast to see the rock formation of Ciudad Itas and some rock paintings believed to be over 2000 years old. After a visit to the Ciudad de Itas rock formations in an attempt to see the majestic condors, you will return to Cochabamba with a stop for lunch.

Once back in Cochbamba, you may add the Tunari Peak tour for the full Andes mountain experience.

Climbing Cerro Tunari Without a Guide

Finally, we come to those daredevils and seasoned mountaineers who brave Cerro Tunari without a guide. This is in fact not an uncommon occurrence, though these are experienced hikers who did their research. And this article has made that part easier for you!

The first step would be to hire a minivan or bus to take you part way up to the mountain trails. One Irish traveller took a 90 minute mini-van from Quillacolo to where she began her hike. The hike took her 2 hours mainly along a dirt road until the last kilometer where you take a more rugged trail around a second lake. She was able to catch another minivan headed back to Cochbamba by 6:30 pm.

Overall warning: The trails are rocky and injury or falls could occur. The trails are also rather empty and therefore help could be far away.

It is best to always travel with a partner!

The 7 Best Things to do in Cochabamba: Bolivia’s Underrated City

Things and attractions in Cochabamba blog post header

I think that Cochabamba is one of Bolivia’s most underrated cities. We found that there are actually a lot of great things to do in Cochabamba, yet we barely met any other travelers in the city.

And to be honest, Cochabamba wasn’t my first choice either.

If I hadn’t gotten altitude sickness in Uyuni, I’m pretty sure we would have made our way to high altitude places in Bolivia such as La Paz and Lake Titicaca. But the altitude had gotten me good, which limited me to visit cities with lower altitudes, and luckily for me, Cochabamba just made the cut!

So, we’ve dedicated a full blog post to all the attractions and things to do in Cochabamba in Bolivia. Our aim is to inspire more people to spend just a few days exploring this lovely place on earth – let’s see how we do.

Things to know before visiting Cochabamba

Before diving into our favorite things to do in Cochabamba, we’d like to share some information about the city. So here is some general information about Cochabamba, including how to get there and where to stay.

How to get to Cochabamba?

Cochabamba is the 4th largest city in Bolivia and it’s situated in the center of the country, which makes it a pretty easy travel destination to reach from most cities in the country.

We believe the easiest way to get to Cochabamba is by bus. You can either go to your local bus station and buy tickets or you can get them online on busbud.com . The cheapest option is to get the tickets directly at the bus station.

We learned that you need to plan a little bit ahead when taking buses in Bolivia. The bus tickets do tend to sell out, so don’t get them at the last minute. Instead, go to the bus station one day before you intend to leave and buy them.

Where to stay in Cochabamba?

During our time in Cochabamba, we stayed in a hostel named Running Chaski , which we can only recommend. It was a super good place, it was clean, had common areas including a kitchen, located in the middle of the city center, and it had an amazing staff.

If the hostel scene isn’t for you, then check out Residencial Moroni , which is a guesthouse with super high ratings. We didn’t stay here, but after doing some research, it’s probably the place we would choose if we want to stay in a private room next time.

Want something else? Then check out all the accommodation options on Booking.com . We always use this accommodation platform, and it’s also where we found and booked the hostel we stayed in.

What is the altitude in Cochabamba?

Cochabamba has an altitude of 2570 meters or 8430 feet above sea level.

And for those of you who don’t know, Bolivia is one of the countries in the world with the highest altitude cities. In fact, the highest big city in the world is “El Alto”, which is the big city bordering La Paz in Bolivia.

Therefore, it’s always a good idea to check the altitude before going anywhere in Bolivia! That way you can prepare yourself for the possibility of getting altitude sickness.

  • Related blog post: Getting altitude sickness in Uyuni .

Luckily, Cochabamba is located at an altitude around 2500 meters, which is the limit for when altitude sickness becomes a possibility. Therefore, people visiting Cochabamba often don’t experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.

What is Cochabamba known for?

Cochabamba is also called, “The City of Eternal Spring” because of its good climate. Doesn’t that just sound appealing?

Apart from that, Cochabamba is mostly known for having one of the biggest Jesus Christ statues in the world. We’ll talk about how you can visit Cristo de la Concordia later in this blog post.

If you ask me what I personally think Cochabamba is known for, I would say that it’s an interesting city that combines the old with the new.

You can experience the old colonial buildings in the plazas, learn about Bolivia’s history, and read the newspaper while having your shoes polished. But you can also easily spot the modern world in Cochabamba. There are several international restaurants and cool graffiti-art all around the city.

We loved this mix between new and old! And we think that Cochabamba has the potential of becoming a popular backpacking destination in the future. Cochabamba is a cheap travel destination with many things to do, and it ought to get some more attention from travelers going to Bolivia.

The 7 best attractions & things to do in Cochabamba

Now we’ve finally reached the more exciting part about this blog post from Bolivia – all the attractions and great things to do in Cochabamba. So let’s start exploring!

1. See amazing views at Cristo de la Concordia

Cristo de la Concordia on San Pedro Hill is a must visit on your trip to Cochabamba.

Cristo de la Concordia means “Christ of Peace”, and it’s a massive statue of Jesus Christ that overlooks the entire city of Cochabamba. With its 34 meters height, it’s actually the second largest Jesus statue in the whole world!

Even if you’re not religious, you should still go visit Cristo de la Concordia because it’s one of the greatest attractions in Cochabamba. Plus, you get the most amazing views over the city from here. Also, there is no entrance fee or opening hours at Cristo de la Concordia.

Here are 3 easy ways to get there:

  • Walk: You can climb up the many steps to Cristo de la Concordia. However… Both locals, our hostel staff, and the cable car workers told us not to do this because there is sadly a high chance of getting mugged on the steps.
  • Cable car: You can take a cable car to Cristo de la Concordia for the price of 13 BOB for a round trip (2020 price, it should be a bit higher today). With this option you also get great views over the city.
  • Taxi: You can also take a taxi to the top of Cristo de la Concordia. A taxi will set you back between 10-12 BOB.

Since we carry a big camera around, we obviously didn’t want to walk up the steps with all the warnings we’d gotten. Even though Glenn and I always love a good hike, it just wasn’t worth the risk.

So instead we took the cable car to Cristo de la Concordia, which leaves from the Autonomia Park. We don’t know the opening hours for the cable car, but we went on a Wednesday morning and there was no line.

2. Feed pigeons at Plaza de Armas 14 de Septiembre

I absolutely hate city pigeons…

However, I’d still recommend everyone who visits Cochabamba to go and do some people-pigeon-watching at Plaza 14 de Septiembre. It’s a historical plaza in the city center of Cochabamba and it’s surrounded by many beautiful buildings.

So just sit down on one of the many benches and enjoy the life of the city.

For a few Bolivianos, you can buy some bird seed and feed the pigeons. However, keep in mind that there are hundreds of pigeons, and they will all flock to you if you start to feed them.

I must admit that it was good fun to sit here and watch pigeons attack all the humans with bird seed.

Another great thing you can do on Plaza de Armas is to get your shoes polished in an old-fashioned style. Glenn had his muddy travel shoes polished, and they truly looked a year younger afterwards. You just sit down in a chair, they hand you a newspaper to read, and then someone just starts to polish your shoes.

It was like going back in time – so cool!

3. Visit the beautiful Saint Sebastian Cathedral

While you’re spending some time feeding pigeons and getting your shoes polished at Plaza 14 de Septiembre, you might as well visit the beautiful Saint Sebastian Cathedral. The cathedral is one of the beautiful buildings surrounding the plaza.

Since it’s a cathedral, there is no entrance fee.

We were actually lucky to visit Saint Sebastian Cathedral during a ceremony. Around 100 women had just finished their education within the health care sector (we think), and apparently it’s a tradition to have a graduation ceremony in the church.

It was so nice to experience this! However, it meant that we didn’t really get to see much of the church.

We think that the Saint Sebastian Cathedral is open from around 8 AM to 8 PM. However, we’re not completely sure, so you’ll have to go check it out for yourself.

4. Visit Convento Museo Santa Teresa

There is only a small handful of museums in Cochabamba. We unfortunately never visited any.

However, when we go back, we want to visit the Convento Museo Santa Teresa.

This museum is an old, historical convent. The convent was designed by architect Pedro Nogales and engineer Martinez Caceres in the baroque style in 1760. Today, you can tour the convent, and it’s said that you even get to walk up on the roof for a beautiful view.

You can read more about the convent here: Convento Museo Santa Teresa

5. Go hiking in Tunari National Park

One of the best things to do in Cochabamba, is to go hike in Tunari National Park!

However, due to my recent altitude sickness incident and general exhaust from being sick, we never did this… But we heard many great things about this national park. So, if you’re a keen hiker then you should definitely go to Tunari National Park!

The Tunari National Park lies on a much higher altitude than Cochabamba’s 2570 meters. In fact, the Tunari Peak has an altitude of 5023 meters. So be aware that you’ll experience less oxygen in the air, which can affect your hiking abilities.

Please take it slow unless you’re used to hiking in high altitudes.

Contact your hotel or hostel to get more information about how to go on a hike in Tunari National Park. It’s too far away from Cochabamba to just wander into Tunari on foot. You’ll need some kind of ride to take you there.

6. Visit La Cancha Market

Did you know that one of the biggest open-air markets in South America is actually located in Cochabamba?

Well we sadly didn’t learn about this until after we actually left Cochabamba. That’s why we’re including it in this blog post, so you don’t miss out like us.

At the La Cancha market, you’ll find fresh fruits and vegetables, colourful fabrics and clothing, tourist souvenirs, Bolivian handicrafts, the latest gadgets, and much more! Enjoy a walk in this bustling market, but get ready to bargain if you want to take something home. Also, expect it to be crowded, so watch out for pickpockets.

7. Drink a coffee at Westeros Café

This is one of the attractions in Cochabamba that’s only really interesting for those who’ve watched Game of Thrones.

If you want to dress up like Jon Snow and sit on the Iron Throne while drinking a delicious Café Latte, then you’ve made it to the right place on earth!

Compared to other cafés in Cochabamba, it’s pretty expensive. However the coffee is delicious, and I guess you also pay for the experience of sitting on the Iron Throne. Westeros Café is open every day from 8 AM – 9 PM (except for Sunday when it’s closed).

We really hope you enjoyed this guide to all the attractions and best things to do in Bolivia’s amazing Cochabamba. Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment with any questions about Cochabamba or Bolivia in general.

We actually visited Cochabamba back in March 2020 and witnessed how the world went into full lockdown. This meant that I suffered from a lot of anxiety during my time in Cochabamba… The fear of getting sick or getting stuck in South America made me very scared. Hopefully we can return to Bolivia and Cochabamba in the future, so that we can appreciate it properly next time.

If you’re preparing a trip to Bolivia or South America and you want to know more about the overall safety, you can read our blog post: Is it safe to travel in South America? We also wrote a blog post about another amazing city in Bolivia that you can check out: Things to do in Sucre .

Good job. Next time stay at a hotel/ hostel on Calle Mayo 25, near Prado ( plaza Colon). There are many restaurants in Prado , the food is good and cheap.

Thanks for your tip Glenn! We actually did stay quite close to Plaza Colon. If you have any great restaurants you want to share then please do so – we’re always looking for delicious places to eat : ) Glad you liked my post. Take care!

I lived in Cochabamba for 4 years from 1962-1966 when everything was so pristine. I went back in 2017 and was disappointed with so much traffic and the lake contaminated. I loved Cochabamba and all the beautiful things to see there at the time. Especially the Beer Factory with it’s restaurant and view from the higher elevations. The many tourist souvenirs at the market. When I lived there, almost everyone used bycycle for transportation, and the few taxis were like 10 cents to go anywhere. You could go see a movie in a very nice theater for only .25 cents, get a haircut and set for only .50 cents. The Quechua Indian women were expert at weaving ponchos, and shawls. Now so much is modernized to knit with machines. The Alpaca wool is one of the softest and warmest of all the wools and durable. But now they try blending Alpaca with Llama which is itchy. The restaurants we went to were still as good as before and inexpensive. Thank you for putting Cochabamba on your list of one of the best cities to visit. In spite of the many changes from earlier times it is still worth taking a vacation there.

Hi Anita, thank you so much for sharing your great insight! It must have been so interesting to experience Cochabamba back the 60’s. I will never have that chance, so I really appreciate you taking your time to share your experience. What I loved about Cochabamba is that you can still find a few places where you can “go back in time”. It was such a funny experience when my boyfriend and I went to the Plaza 14 de Septiembre. He got into this old chair, he was handed a newspaper, and then just sat there reading while getting his shoes polished – it was like out of an old black and white movie. Anyways, again thanks for sharing your memories! We definitely hope to make it back to Bolivia in our future travels.

It’s the best post I’ve read from my city! I’m glad you both enjoyed visiting Cochabamba – “la Llajta”. I hope you come back soon. Kind regards!

Thank you Manuel! That made me so happy. We really enjoyed your city, and we hope to come back someday in the future! Take care : )

My and I were planning to visit there sometime this year but pandemic got on hold, is it safe to visit Bolivia now, I heard that COVID-19 getting worse there!

Oh I’m sorry to hear that Jacob! I’m not in Bolivia right now, so I don’t know how the covid situation is going… From what I can read online, they’ve been hit pretty hard like the rest of the world, but they have started to vaccinate. I think we still have to wait a bit before we can begin traveling again, but we can always dream and start planning where we want to go. I really hope you will make it to Cochabamba some day! 🙂

Hello Cecilie, Thank you for you blog! I love the pictures, the information you provided and your perspective of Cochabamba. I have to go and visit that amazing place with such an extraordinary view and have coffee too. – Westeros. There are so many small “cafes” every where that I dont know to enjoy a cup of a latte. Also, for those looking some good and fUN work out is the stairs at the Cristo de La Concordia. I am from Cochabamba but live in the USA for about two decades already. So, when I have the chance for a vacation, I love to visit my native home!

Hi Karla, thank you so much for your lovely comment! That’s so excited that you’re from Cochabamba. I would love to go back as well for some more exploration. I feel like the city had so much more to offer than what we had time for… I hope you are well in the USA. Hugs from Cecilie!

Dulces Tentaciones: Postres Tradicionales

¡Buen provecho!

How To Visit Torotoro National Park From Cochabamba

How to visit torotoro national park.

Found in the Potosi region of Bolivia, Torotoro National Park is smack bang in the middle between Cochabamba and Sucre .

However, the small town is only accessible from Cochabamba , 140km away.

Famous for its incredibly well-preserved fossils and dinosaur footprints, towering canyons, surreal rock formations and sprawling network of underground caves, this national park has something for nature lovers and natural history nerds alike.

The only way of getting to Torotoro is by public transport from Cochabamba.

How To Get To Torotoro National Park From Cochabamba

Torotoro is a 4-5-hour mini-bus journey from Cochabamba.

The road is still being built (as of January 2020) and switches between stretches of fresh asphalt and dirt road. The journey is bumpy and cramped. If you have long legs like us, then try to get yourself into a seat where you can stretch out. Luckily half the passengers got out around 2 hours into the journey, but that first stretch wasn’t enjoyable.

On the morning you wish to travel, take a taxi (no more than 20Bs) to the mini-bus station which is on Republica Avenue.

We asked the staff at Running Chaski Hostel to organise one for us, and they kindly spoke to the driver as well to let him know where we wanted to go.

Mini-buses will depart from the station from 05:00-18:30 each day and will only leave once each mini-bus is full up. A ticket costs 35BOBs per person. You might be waiting a while for the bus to reach capacity.

When departing from Torotoro, the mini-bus leaves from the main square where you get dropped off. The town is four roads so you won’t have trouble finding it and will see the buses lined up. With 10 seats in a mini-bus, it shouldn’t take too long to fill up.

On the way there we waited around an hour to fill up, but on the way back we filled the last two seats and shot off instantly. We’d recommend getting there around before 9 AM to get your names down and leave on the first bus.

We visited in January 2020, and a new road was under construction connecting Cochabamba to Sucre. We imagine once the road is complete and larger buses can take people directly to Torotoro the tourism industry will explode.

How To Organise A Tour In Tortoro National Park

There are three main tours when entering the National Park from town.

You must have a guide when going into the national park. Sorry to those who love exploring on their own, but the guides are knowledgeable, and you learn a lot. It also supports the local people and economy.

Tours are arranged next to the National Park Office. You will first need to pay the 100Bs park entrance fee at the office to get your ticket, then head to the guides office next door to pick your tour and guide.

Tours start from 7AM – 2PM each day.

Each tour has a maximum of 6 people , and the cost is split between everyone, so the more people you have, the cheaper it is. We suggest arriving at the office early to join up with people and reduce the cost. That being said, the overall tour price isn’t extortionate so having a tour between two people is still affordable.

Tours cost around $50 split between 6 people.

As foreign tourism hasn’t exploded in Torotoro yet, guides only speak Spanish , so take this into account when visiting. At the time, our Spanish was good enough to understand most of what the guide was saying even if we missed out on some detail. Helpfully our guide carried toy dinosaurs with him, so we were visually clued up.

There are three tours on offer and take between 4-6 hours each:

Torotoro

1. El Vergel

You start by visiting dinosaur footprints just outside the city.

After this, you will visit the Torotoro Canyon viewpoint and then descend into the canyon to visit the El Vergel waterfall.

The trek is relatively easy as most of it is flat until you head down into the canyon. The only hard bit is coming back up.

You will spend 20 minutes at the viewpoint and will have about an hour down at the waterfall to eat and swim in the canyon waters. We did this tour and would recommend it as it had a nice mix of scenery and trekking. Check out our YouTube video to get an idea the day.

Do You Want Cheap Flights To South America With Cashback?

I’ve been using WayAway Plus to book almost everything whilst travelling around South America.

You get cashback on:

  • Flights – finds the cheapeast flights and gives you 5% cashback on all flights booked
  • Accommodation  – up to 20% cashback on selected deals with Booking.com and 6% with HostelWorld
  • Tours – up to 8% cashback with GetYourGuide and 6% with Viator

2. Cuidad De Itas

The tour starts with an hour drive into the park up to an altitude of 3,800m.

Then you trek for 2-3 hours until you reach the ‘City of Rocks’ , a collection of weird and wonderful rock formations and caves that resemble animals.

Along the way, you will also come across cave paintings and dinosaur footprints. Once you reach the end of the trek, you’ll have incredible views of the mountains and unique geology of the region.

Torotoro

3. Umajalanta Caves

Torotoro has an underground river ( Rio Umajalanta ) that created a vast network of passages and caverns after millions of years of erosion.

This tour will take you on a route through the parts of the caves that have been explored and will include some climbing, scaling and descending with safety ropes.

Some sections will require you to squeeze through small gaps, so this isn’t one for claustrophobics.

While exploring the caves, you’ll come across impressive stalagmite/stalactite formations, underground waterfalls, and the local population of vampire bats.

You also have the option of combining these tours into one day and paying extra. It would make for an exhausting day, but you’d see most of the park.

Torotoro national park

4. Private Tours

Private tours are available online but we wouldn’t recommend them.

They’re expensive, and we think it’s better to go to the park yourself and stay a few nights.

A 3-day tour from Kanoo costs $180 . If you organise your transport, accommodation, and tours, it will cost less than half of that.

If you prefer to have everything organised for you then here are two companies to check out:

  • Kanoo Tours
  • El Munda Verde

Is Torotoro National Park Worth Visiting?

Bolivia is one of the least well-travelled countries in South America . Most people spend under two weeks and hit the highlights of La Paz and Uyuni.

When you step off the gringo trail and visit places like Torotoro, you’ll find it hard to find other travellers.

For some, this may not be appealing, but visiting this National Park is perfect for those who want to explore a hidden gem.

The park itself is stunning, with perfectly preserved dinosaur footprints and fossils from millions of years ago. The nature is untouched , and there are several tours you can take to some beautiful and unique sights such as the Umajalanta Caves and Torotoro Canyon.

So yes, it is worth it if you want to get off the gringo trail, get out into nature and see some extraordinary natural history in the form of dinosaur footprints and fossils.

Check out the video below to see more from our day exploring Torotoro:

What To Pack For Visiting Torotoro National Park

We only stayed for two nights and knew our big bags wouldn’t fit on the mini-bus, so we left them at the hostel in Cochabamba.

Running Chaski has a luggage storage room and will look after your luggage for free. Depending on how long you want to stay and what you are planning to do there, here’s a list of essential things:

  • Suncream – trekking in the park all day you will need to protect your skin
  • Hiking boots – depending on what treks you choose, boots are essential. The rainy season will mean muddy roads and paths. Although the weather was perfect for our ‘El Vergel’ trek, we still walked along rocky paths, through rivers and muddy clay patches. If you do any of the other hikes, notably caving, you will want a safe, reliable pair of shoes.
  • Waterproofs – we went in the middle of January, which is the rainy season but got lucky with the weather. The day we were leaving there was torrential rain so come prepared.

The Best Places To Stay In Torotoro

Torotoro still isn’t a popular destination among backpackers although it is growing in popularity.

You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a hostel, however, check the season as we imagine it’s popular among Bolivian tourists during high season.

As the town is tiny and welcomes a small number of tourists, there’s no need to book ahead. Once you arrive, you can walk the main street and find a hostel.

We stayed at Torotoro Hostal which has double rooms with private bathroom for £14/$18.60 a night.

Other cheap options include:

  • Hostel Eden
  • El Dinosaurio Hostal

For an option just outside of the town with some incredible views of the valley, try Rumi Kipu Ecohotel.

Best Backpack For South America (Osprey Farpoint)

Is This The Best Backpack For South America?

I love the Osprey Farpoint 50-70L.

It’s reasonably priced and perfect for first timers visiting South America.

Read more here about why it’s so great or head to the official site below:

Other Activities In Torotoro

If you aren’t looking to fill another half or full day with an excursion into the park there are a couple of other options:

  • Cementerio de Tortugas – a small museum outside the city with fossils from the region
  • Pachamama Wasi Museum – another small museum set inside a local’s house. It’s like a botanical garden but made of stones, fossils, and other unusual rock formations.
  • Siete Vueltas – a 7km circuit trek in which you don’t need a guide as it isn’t inside the park. Along the way, you will see lots of marine fossils in the walls of the cliffs and get a great view of the town and valley once you reach the top.

Preparing for your first trip to South America?

How To Prepare For South America

How To Prepare For A Trip To South America: 31 FAQs Answered

How do you prepare for a trip to South America? Here are 31 commonly asked questions, answered an expert (me) so you can have the trip of a lifetime!

How To Get To Cochabamba

Whilst Torotoro is located in the state of Potosi, the only way to get there is from the city of Cochabamba currently.

One of the largest cities in Bolivia, it has enough there to keep you occupied for a day or two or to use it as a base for visiting the park.

We’ve covered the town briefly in this guide if you decide to stay longer there.

How To Get To Cochabamba From La Paz

Cochabamba is an 8-hour bus from La Paz.

You can book bus tickets online at Bolivia Tickets .

There’s one-morning bus-only that leaves at 7:30 and arrives at 15:30 . Or three-night buses are departing at 22:00, 22:30, and 23:00 . These all cost $15.47 and run by Trans Copacabana.

We always tried to book our buses online and go with this company as they have the best reviews. An alternative is to find smaller companies that cater to locals and book directly on the day at the bus station.

If you are heading back to La Paz, be sure to check out both of our guides to see all the amazing activities you can do:

Where To Stay In Cochabamba

Hostal Running Chaski is the most popular in town, with bunkbeds dorms, private rooms, free breakfast and helpful staff.

We stayed here and this would be our recommendation. The breakfast included eggs, bread and jam with coffee and juice.

They also let us leave our big bags in their locker as you only need to take a small bag to Torotoro.

Do You want Cheap Data Anywhere In South America?

Airalo is my favourite eSIM for travelling around South America. Here’s why:

  • Save Money – No more high roaming bills with access to the best eSIMs (digital SIM cards) for every country in South America!
  • Easy – No more stress trying to buy a physical SIM. You can download and install a data pack and get connected as soon as you land.

Cochabamba and Torotoro Itinerary

You should need 4 days/3 nights minimum to get to Cochabamba and then visit the park. Here’s how we did it:

  • Day 1 – Morning bus from La Paz to Cochabamba
  • Day 2 – Travel from Cochabamba to Torotoro
  • Day 3 – Full day tour in the park
  • Day 4 – return to Cochabamba/ Night bus to Sucre or La Paz

We suggest you spend at least two nights in Torotoro.

Your first day will be spent travelling via mini-bus to the town. You could book on to a tour that day if you arrive early enough or do one of the other activities we mentioned above. Then on the second day, wake up early for a full day tour and stay that night.

We travelled back to Cochabamba on the morning of the third day. You will arrive back to Cochabamba in the afternoon, and you have the option to stay another night or hop onto a bus (night bus most likely) to La Paz or Sucre.

You could technically get the earliest mini-bus, do the tour that day, stay the night and leave the next day but its always better not to rush in our opinion.

Or you could easily do the first tour and then catch one of the last buses if you don’t want to stay two nights. You have lots of options.

Be sure to check out our month-long Bolivia itinerary to see how Torotoro fits in with travelling through the rest of this amazing country:
