  • 12:01, 30 JAN 2023

Legendary rock band The Who has announced a UK tour with shows from 6-23 July, 2023.

The tour will see the band visit cities such as Hull, Edinburgh, London, Brighton and St Helens. Joining them will be UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, except for at The O2 London and Edinburgh Castle dates.

Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and the band will perform all the classics throughout the band’s almost 60-year careers. The gig will see certain sections devoted to albums such as Tommy & Quadrophenia and songs from their 2019 WHO album.

The 2023 UK shows will include a performance at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens, Edinburgh Castle, Derby, Hull and more. Following last year’s ‘The Who Hits Back’ tour of the US, the 2021 UK tour will feature The Who’s full live band along with an orchestra.

The Who wound up their Who Hits Back tour of the US in November last year having wowed audiences in over thirty cities. Media and fans agreed that the band were as good as, if not 'better than ever' with the orchestral arrangements - most of which were done by David Campbell.

Speaking about the UK tour, lead singer Roger Daltrey said: “Having not toured the UK for six years, it's great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me. This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.”

Guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend added “Roger initially christened this tour with an orchestra ‘Moving On!’ I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the UK."

The Who Tour 2023 dates include:

  • July 6 - Sewell Group Craven Park, Hull
  • July 8 - Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh
  • July 9 - Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh
  • July 12 - The O2, London
  • July 14 - The Incora County Ground, Derby
  • July 16 - Badminton Estate, Bristol
  • July 19 - Seat Unique Riverside, Durham
  • July 21 - Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens
  • July 23 - The 1st Central County Ground, Brighton

Tickets go on general sale on February 3 at 10am and can be purchased online through Ticketmaste r or SeeTickets. Prices start from £73.92 for standing and from £73 - £141 for seating.

The Who: Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens – Live Review

the who tour st helens

The Who l UB40 l Standin’Man Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens 21st July 2023

Braving the storm, Del Pike welcomes the rain and celebrates the reign of The Who as they stop off in St Helens with a full orchestra in tow.

The Who live experience is never cut and dried. From the early Detours shows and Who shows of the pubs and clubs of West London, through the stadium tours and the worldwide live Tommy phenomenon and numerous reunions to the unstoppable force that the band have now become, Townshend and Daltrey rarely disappoint. The Who Hits Back has been a well-received tour this year with almost unanimous praise from major press reviews, as the band have been backed by a full orchestra, some members full time on the tour and others hired locally. Tonight, The Who and the Heart of England Philharmonic stop off in the unlikely setting of St Helens and if there was a roof, it would have clearly been blown off, scattering its ashes along the East Lancs Road as we speak.

With the audience seated on the pitch only, the lack of seats in the stand make the crowd seem quite small in comparison to your usual stadium gig , and adds an unexpected intimacy. Due to hold ups with press allocation, Warrington’s Standin’ Man is nearing the end of their set as we arrive, caught mid-way between a psych-rock version of The Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby.

Vocalist Dean Fairhurst looks every bit the stereotypical “rock star”, the likes of which have clearly influenced his work. We spot him entering the arena earlier and he has the swagger of Jagger off to a tee, all silk scarves, and tight trousers. He has a tough job playing to a virtually empty arena, but he is giving it his all. The much-covered Beatles classic is getting a pretty good makeover once again.

Going Nowhere In A Hurry is a quieter original and is the closing track from their album, Life Intimidating Art, which is puzzlingly only available at gigs. Fairhurst and his band have already supported Liam Gallagher, Def Leppard, Roger Waters and The Scorpions, so the recognition is there and the future looks bright, particularly with tracks like new single Changin’ Wind that closes the set today. Recalling ’90s Britpop with that mix of ’60s psychedelia thrown in, there are echoes of Cast and Ocean Colour Scene, even smidgens of the best moments of Kula Shaker. Fairhurst wears his influences on his sleeve but that doesn’t appear to be causing him too much harm.

As more and more parka clad men of a certain age appear I am beginning to think that a coat would have been a good idea, the approaching clouds are suggesting this isn’t going to be a July scorcher after all, despite a glorious day so far.

UB40 should bring some sunshine surely?

The Who: Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens – Live Review

UB40 With Ali Campbell is a very different beast to the band who never seemed to be out of the charts in the ’80s, a collective of talents that seemed to be having a constant party onstage, laughing and interacting whilst scoring a massive hit with Chrissy Hynde on I Got You Babe. Now however, as their title suggests you have some members of UB40 playing the music perfectly well and Campbell standing alone and estranged, delivering by the number renditions of their classic songs without audience interaction or any real sense of fun.  Eyes closed, this is great, particularly on songs like Many Rivers to Cross, Kingston Town and the Elvis cover, Can’t Help Falling in Love, eyes open – it all becomes very flat and hard to enjoy.

Red Red Wine has become a staple of Smooth Radio now and that slick ’80s production has marred the memory of the band, making it hard to remember their much more credible roots in absolute gems like Food For Thought and One In Ten. The latter gets an airing tonight and this is the hands down highlight of the set. Campbell’s solitary delivery matches the fable of disenchanted early ’80s youth on the tough streets of Birmingham. Those first two albums still stand proudly next to The Specials’ debut album, both culturally diverse bands with uncompromising anti-Tory messages.

The clouds draw nearer as the orchestra take their seats and like every Who gig I have attended, and there have been many, the excitement is building fast and intensely. Who fans are devoted, no doubt. That much of Pete Townshend’s output deals with issues of identity, from I Can’t Explain, right through his two searing rock operas, it is no surprise that this devotion is so deep and the kinship so strong.

The band take the stage and Townshend, wrapped up in windcheater, scarf and hat, explains how the first section will showcase the orchestra, and indeed The mighty Who seem to be almost drowned out as the orchestra power through Overture, the opening track from Tommy. It is magnificent as expected, and gradually as they work their way into Sparks and Amazing Journey, The actual Who step from the shadows and deliver. In no time Daltrey, still defying his age, is swinging his microphone like no other and Townshend is windmilling his arm, just like that famous Maximum R&B poster of old. Zak Starkey, dressed in what appears to be a yellow onesie (a bit like Pudsey the bear) has been part of the band now for so long, his performance tonight is electric, still not quite Keith, but much more Moon-like than Kenney Jones.

The Who: Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens – Live Review

Good humour wins the race, and we are straight into Who Are You, a live favourite for many a year, once again sounding better than ever. Eminence Front from the much loathed It’s Hard album, makes an appearance, fronted by Pete. Setlist FM tells us that this has been performed live 369 times, which is staggering considering the best that can be said for it is that is the best track from their worst album. Arguably of course.

The orchestra take a break as the band perform, in the words of Townshend “like we used to”.

By now the rain has begun and will carry on for the remainder of the night, but The Kids Are Alright reminds us that it is a Friday night and The Who are your perfect Friday night band. You Better You Bet doesn’t quite fit right in the run of ’60s hits and is another song I struggle with in terms of its popularity. It still just sounds too clean. Then its straight back into the perfect jukebox selections with Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere, Substitute and My Generation. The latter turns into a bizarre rap, which then becomes Cry If You want, another track from 1982’s It’s Hard, and I’m feeling that a straight in and out version of My Generation would be better received.

It’s around now that a strange magic begins to permeate the arena. Roger, who Pete has named a Shaman, has failed to stop the rain, despite much taunting and it has now become heavy. It has also started to get dark and the beautiful stage lighting is twinkling through the raindrops on my glasses. The weather which had so far been a hindrance has now become another element to the drama unfolding onstage.

The Who: Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens – Live Review

Daltrey is flanked by violinist and orchestra leader Katie Jacoby and Cellist Audrey Snyder and, despite some quite fragile vocals, Behind Blue Eyes has never sounded more beautiful and heartbreaking.

This is my first Who gig without my brother-in-law Rob, who we lost a few years ago and Behind Blue Eyes meant everything to him. I look up to the skies knowing how much he would have loved this version and for a moment he is standing by my side. This is what The Who mean to so many people who have loved and lost throughout their career, The Who themselves no strangers to tragedy. They are no regular band.

Now fully drenched, wild horses could not drag us away as The Who embark on the third act tonight; excerpts from Quadrophenia with the orchestra reinstated.

The Real Me is incredible, always recalling the images of Jimmy on his scooter at the start of the Quadrophenia film being chased by rockers through the dark streets of London. Iconic doesn’t cover it. I’m One is equally as powerful as it moves between Pete’s tender vocals to the raging choruses.

5.15 cannot be beaten tonight, with blaring horns and Daltrey’s throat rattling vocals, it is pure genius. Whilst Tommy still gets all the glory, and is almost justifiably recognised as the first rock opera, for many Quadrophenia is the real deal. The protagonist of Tommy may be recognisable to some, but the story of the troubled Jimmy Cooper and his gang of mods speaks directly to The Who’s fan base and to many the album packs some of their very best music.

The instrumental The Rock, which comes towards the end, gives the listener time to reflect on not just Jimmy’s story, but their own experiences, and the performance of this track by the orchestra tonight is accompanied by devastating visuals of worldwide events since The Who’s inception. We see student riots, Vietnam, Presidents, Prime Ministers and Royalty as they come and go, 9/11, the strange affair of Thatcher and Reagan (to much booing) and finally Covid, the death of the Queen, the rise of the King and the chilling cold face of Putin. It is a powerful moment, made more potent by the driving rain and the chill wind that has grown in the final moments. What could be more appropriate than Love Reign O’er Me as Daltrey rages to the Sky “Reign on me!”.

Naturally Baba O’Riley closes the set and allows all on stage one final explosive flourish.

The Who seem genuinely grateful to everyone who has endured the weather and skipping their usual comedown encore of Theatre and Tea, they allow us to escape to shelter and in the warmth of our cars to relish a very special night under the stars.

I can’t recall a better Who gig than this which, given the age of the two surviving members, is no mean feat. If there are any tickets remaining for their final shows, I can only say this tour is a must and to miss out would be just foolish.

The gigs follow last year’s highly acclaimed ‘The Who Hits Back’ tour of the US, where the band shared the with some of the finest orchestras in America.

The Who wound up their Who Hits Back tour of the US in November last year having wowed audiences in over thirty cities, with media and fans agreeing that the band were as good as, if not better than ever and that the orchestral arrangements, most of which were done by the legendary David Campbell, brought a new depth and excitement to Pete Townshend’s music.

Performing with The Who and an orchestra had been a long-held ambition for singer Roger Daltrey  “Having not toured the UK for six years, it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me. ABOUT THE WHO

The Who are one of the top three greatest rock legacies in music history with nine US & ten UK top ten albums and 14 UK top ten singles.

They have played over well over 2,000 gigs in a career spanning over 50 years including venues such as Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Glastonbury (twice), Hyde Park (four times), The Isle Of Wight (three times), the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, Desert Trip, Shea Stadium, The Superbowl half time show and Live Aid to name but a very few.

Emerging in the mid-1960s as a new and incendiary force in rock n’ roll, their brash style and poignant storytelling garnered them one of music’s most passionate followings, with the legendary foursome blazing a searing new template for rock, punk, and everything after.

Inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, the band has placed 27 top-forty singles in the United States and United Kingdom and earning 17 Top Ten albums, including the 1969 groundbreaking rock opera Tommy, 1971’s pummeling Live At Leeds, 1973’s Quadrophenia and 1978’s Who Are You.  The Who debuted in 1964 with a trio of anthems “I Can’t Explain,” “The Kids Are Alright” and “My Generation.” Since then, they have delivered to the world hits such as Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Pinball Wizard,” Who Are You,” and,” You Better You Bet.” 2008, they became the first rock band ever to be awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. The Who has performed all over the world including global music events for the Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show in 2010 and closing the Summer Olympics in 2012. The Who continued their charity work by playing a concert in January 2011 to raise money for trials of a new cancer treatment called PDT. In December 2012 they performed at the Hurricane Sandy Benefit in New York.

Alongside his ground-breaking work with the Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK, in November 2012 Daltrey, with Townshend at his side, launched Teen Cancer America, $1 from each ticket sold on the 2019 MOVING ON! Tour, which each night featured a full orchestra, benefited Teen Cancer America (www.teencanceramerica.org)

With both Roger and Pete delivering their own memoirs (Pete’s Who I Am was released to much acclaim in 2012, and Roger’s autobiography, Thanks A Lot Mr. Kibblewhite; My Story, was embraced by critics in 2018) it’s fitting that the two remaining WHO members have shared their incredible legacy in literary fashion, for few bands have had a more lasting impact on the rock era and the reverberating pop culture than The Who.

The band released their first new album in thirteen years, the critically acclaimed WHO in 2019 and are currently about to go back on the road in Europe with their THE WHO HITS BACK tour.

Chris M – St Helens — 03/04/24

Better late than never.

When Chris and Stephanie were married two years ago, they probably thought they’d be spending their second anniversary doing something low-key, like going out to dinner. They had no idea that Chris would turn a $20 bill into a $22,500 prize – and a honeymoon they won’t forget!

Chris was sitting down to play some casual slots in St. Helens when, before he knew it, his screen was filling up with diamonds. He had won Big City 5’s Diamond Jackpot. Of course, Stephanie was his first call.

Now, these two need to decide not just where to grab dinner, but where in the world to go to grab it? Currently, they’re weighing their options – Vegas is high on the list – but we’re sure wherever they go, they’ll have a blast. Cotton may be the traditional gift for a second anniversary, but this year, they’ll be celebrating with paper – in the form of a big check, plane tickets, and of course, cash.

Absolutely amazing last night at Hull didn’t want it to end!

' src=

Is there to be a video or blu Ray commercial film of this current tour for public release in the future?

' src=

No plans as yet, but . . . you never know

' src=

When is Roger going release a CD/Album of some of Pete’s solo songs that coulda, woulda, shoulda been Who songs???? What better project during Who down times to keep Roger’s voice fresh? He’s already done a version of “Let My Love Open The Door,” and live versions of “Sea Refuses No River,” and “Eminence Front.” The song list could span their whole career. Here are my suggestions for a Roger solo album I would LOVE to own… A Legal Matter, My Baby Gives It Away, Keep Me Turning, Rough Boys, Jools & Jim, A Little is Enough, Empty Glass, Gonna Get Ya, Sea Refuses No River, Face Dances Part Two, Stardom In Action, Eminence Front, Give Blood, A Friend Is A Friend, and lastly, English Boy. This would make a great 80th Birthday release for Roger and Who fans!!!!!

I am in a wheelchair and had tickets for the O2.we expected UB40 to be the support, with The Who hitting the stage at 9pm. I had a hospital appointment today, but pushed myself to get to the O2. We arrived at 8:30pm, which gave us time to see The Who. When we arrived inside we discovered UB40 did not appear and The Who started at 8:15pm. Then due to a mess up by the O2 with our ticket, we were not able to sit and watch the band until 9pm. We missed 45 minutes and I am very upset. I am nearly 72 and now don’t expect to see The Who again.

Sorry you had so much trouble at the 02 on Wednesday. UB40 featuring Ali Campbell were not billed to appear at the 02 and it said so on our web site and social media posts. The start time for The Who was also not stated as 9.00pm.

' src=

Great show at the 02, thank you for the amazing music

' src=

Hi. What time at Derby tomorrow please? It says 1700 but that seems really early.

' src=

Going to the Derby show tonight with my eldest son, looking forward to it. What time will the show likely finish, as checking trains back to Nottingham afterwards?

About 10.30pm

A much weaker sound at Derby than at the 02 and a very poor response from the audience, I’m afraid many of them where I was didn’t seem to know who it was they were listening to?! (Why did they come?). Also, and no disrespect to those who behaved properly, loud talking ,and very heavy drinking all night! Seemed to adversely affect the performance as the band must have been aware of the response?!

' src=

Absolutely fantastic in Derby last night. Pete ‘windmilling’ and Roger hitting that high at end of ‘Who are you’…. and the incredible violin playing in Baba O’Riley. Wow!

' src=

What a great idea, Michael! I often thought the same hearing ROGER sing certain songs on Pete’s Solo projects. Here’s one I would add to your list: “somebody save me.” Roger to me is the best rock ‘n’ roll singer of all time, an inspiring man and artist; I saw him opening his North American solo tour in Vancouver, BC, Canada around 2006, I think; to me that particular touring band sounded like The Who on Leeds and Quadrophenia, and I think those guys would generate a WHO-like experience for this recording project. To me, that was “Young Man Blues” from Leeds, and “The Real Me” from Quadrophenia; would be a an amazing gift to get another record that blows you away. Roger still has the power and skill and spirit. Cheers, with Gratitude!

' src=

I’ve got tickets for the concert at Hove on Sun 23rd July. I know the gates open at 4pm, but I can’t get there then…. Can you tell me, please, what time UB40 are due on. And then what time The Who are due to take to the stage. I’ve searched everywhere for this info but can’t find it. Thanks

UB40 probably around 6.30pm and The Who around 8.15pm

' src=

Incredible so far seen the Paris both Edinburgh shows and Derby utterly brilliant. Incredible. Make no mistake The Who continue to amaze.

' src=

Really looking forward to seeing the tour in St. Helens on Friday. I’m taking my Dad as a birthday treat, he’ll be 75,hes always been a Who fan but never seen you live. I see gates open at 4:30pm, but what time should we expect UB40 to come on stage?

About 6.30pm, Mike.

Paris was immense; both Edinburgh shows were ‘Remarkable’ according to the Edinburgh Herald. Derby was fantastic described by a critic as ‘Heartstopping’. I’m off to Durham and St.Helens this week; can’t wait!!!!!!!

' src=

So looking forward to St Helens on Friday. It’ll be 50 years in November since I saw the band live for the first time of many since – and what better way to celebrate my ‘Who-iversary’than seeing them again? Bring it on!

' src=

Travelled in from Detroit specifically to see them at Edinburgh and Badminton shows – both shows were absolutely incredible. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Pete rip out a Rickenbacker guitar for a few songs, what a pleasure to see and hear. Roger’s voice and swinging mike were a flashback to earlier times. People were so great to us, we felt so welcomed here, thank you for that. The Who is a National Treasure, we will never forget this entire trip. Met so many new friends, and our old ones were on the stage. Well done!!!

As the UK’s number one fan, I’d love to meet up with likeminded people; I’m staying at the Campanile in Washington tomorrow, prior to the Durham show. Hopefully see fellow fans there.

' src=

Are all the stands for St helens closed? Just had am e.ail from see tickets moving me from a good veiw to one o the oor were I would t see when everyone stands up all within one day of show?

' src=

I remember as a 9 year old Boy listening to My Generation back in 1965. I have seen them on numerous occasions.Went to Edinburgh first Night and off to Hove on Sunday.Pete , Roger, thank you for all your Music and the happy times I have had watching you and listening. You have been a big part of my life, absolutely brilliant

' src=

Just been to the St Helens gig…1st time was Charlton in 76…this was just as great…ya can’t kill rock n roll…love these guys and the fans are just as crazy as ever…where would we be without The Who…!

' src=

It’s been some time doin’ Europe (Holland)………

' src=

I took my mum, dad and uncle last night to st helens and it was one of the best live performances I’ve ever been to! Vocals, music, lights, everything was amazing. The orchestra were fantastic too, especially the violinist towards the end!

Went to the St Helens gig…as good as Charlton in 76 – my first of many. Great time down at front…Thanks Pete and Roger and band…ya can’t kill rock n roll…!

' src=

We saw you at Bristol Badminton Estate. The show was amazing with orchestra, we had a fantastic time. Epic!!!!!! Thank you

' src=

Going to the show today but the weather isn’t looking great. Is there a risk of not going on due to weather?

' src=

Dear musicians, once I stand for closed doors in Dublin. I bought tickets long time before. Arrived after 1500 miles with parts of my family in our old car, started in Hannover Germany. And than this fucking lock down. A big dream damaged to see, hear, feel… the band in between this crazy Irish people. Now a few weeks ago I saw you in Berlin. Thanks not God, thanks the universe. Thanks you, I had got wet eyes. I’m coming to Sandringham, sure.To see, hear, feel… you in between British crowds

After the volcanic hell of trying to park a car in Brighton and Hove thankfully the gig was very good, some great moments and crucially an audience of actual Who fans! Great stuff.

' src=

After seeing the bands 1st gig with the orchestra back at Wembley a few years back I was a bit unsure what to expect at Brighton, however no worries awesome sound much better than what I remembered at Wembley. Pete seemed really up for this & was fabulous to watch throughout handling all the anouncements & chat throughout, wonderful evening, wonderful gig really kicking myself for not doing the O2 night in London, please God don’t let this be the last Who concert I’ll witness.

Yes the highlight for me at Wembley was the great version of imagine a man, I think one of the things I’ve enjoyed so much this time around is the sheer joy of seeing them again and the sonic richness of the sound , when it works, it really works. Yesterday though I was amazed to see and hear the superb Rick 12 string!

' src=

Best ever show ( and I have been to some gigs ) Wife said she doesn’t need to see any more bands now as the show at Eden last night won’t be beaten by any band.
