The 'Impractical Jokers' Live Shows Are Fun for Most — Even if You Don’t Watch the Show

Chrissy Bobic - Author

Jul. 22 2021, Published 3:40 p.m. ET

Fans of Impractical Jokers know all about the humor the guys present, which includes pranks on each other and the occasional dirty joke. But before the show came along, Sal Vulcano , Joe Gatto , James "Murr" Murray, and Brian "Q" Quinn were known as The Tenderloins, a comedy group that often performed together.

Impractical Jokers on TruTV helped skyrocket their improv troupe to stardom. And they still get to go on tour and perform live on-stage for their fans, though now it's under the same name as their TV show.

Some viewers are wondering what happens at a live Impractical Jokers show . The TV series has a specific formula involving filmed sketches, and a live version of that seems almost impossible.

What do the 'Impractical Jokers' do at their live shows?

According to a Reddit thread from 2016, the shows are worth attending. The four guys go on stage to tell jokes and tease each other. They also mix in videos of their pranks and memories from the TV show.

In that regard, the live shows have a strong similarity to the Impractical Jokers TV show, but you do get to see Sal, Joe, Murr, and Q play off each other in a live setting.

Someone else commented in the same thread to claim the jokes the guys tell during their live shows are written instead of improvised. If you go to a live I mpractical Jokers show expecting live improv, you might be a little disappointed. But they are live shows, so they're always evolving and changing in some capacity.

The 'Impractical Jokers' live shows aren't exactly kid-friendly.

Although you might watch Impractical Jokers with your kids, the live shows aren't super kid-friendly. People who have seen the show live have said the guys sometimes use crude language. The Impractical Jokers movie had some of that as well, so it makes sense that the live shows would be a little more PG-13 than the TV show.

How can you get tickets to see the 'Impractical Jokers' on tour?

The guys, who still call themselves The Tenderloins when they're on tour, announced a 2021 tour as the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions began to ease up around the United States. The tour appears to last from November 2021 until August 2022. You can find tickets on their website and you have to be 16 years old or older to attend.

You can purchase tickets for as little as $85. Once you add tickets to your virtual cart, you can also opt to pay $400 for a backstage tour with Murr. For $200, though, you can pay for a meet and greet package with him.

For the right Impractical Jokers fan (of the show and the improv troupe), both options are a small price to pay.

Now in its eighth season, Impractical Jokers follows The Tenderloins as they compete to embarrass each other while being filmed by hidden cameras. With each new season, the show continues to take dares to outrageous levels with new over-the-top hijinks. In addition to the top-rated television show, the group wrapped their first feature film in 2019 and are also debuting a new TV show – TBS’s “The Misery Index” hosted by Jameela Jamil in Fall 2019. The Troupe has toured steadily over the last four years with its highly-successful, “Where’s Larry?”, “Santiago Sent Us,” & “Cranjis McBasketball” tours playing to hundreds of thousands of fans in the US and UK, including three sold-out nights at Radio City Music Hall, a sold-out Madison Square Garden, and five sold-out shows at London’s O2 Arena. Natives of Staten Island, NY, Vulcano, Gatto, Murray and Quinn met while attending high school and later formed The Tenderloins Comedy Troupe in 1999. After years of performing live improv and sketch comedy shows, The Tenderloins crossed over to the web, garnering millions of views for their internet sketches, eventually creating the runaway success Impractical Jokers for truTV. Impractical Jokers is top 5 in its time slot on cable in the US and is the #1 show on Comedy Central in the United Kingdom and India.

The Tenderloins Reflect on Road to 200 Episodes of ‘Impractical Jokers’

the Tenderloins Comedy Troupe

Comedy troupe the Tenderloins are having a moment.

This month finds the “ Impractical Jokers ” in a wonderful place. They took to the sea Feb. 10, on their fourth cruise; three days later their truTV show celebrates its 200th episode; their movie opens Feb. 21. And they recently announced six weeks of arena dates for “The Scoopski Potatoes Tour.”

Not bad for goofballs who delight in cracking up each other. The four have been doing that since meeting as freshmen at Staten Island’s Monsignor Farrell High School. Sure, the pranks are more elaborate now. And they haven’t done all on their wish list. (They still want to speak out when the wedding officiant asks if anyone has objections and have considered crashing the receiving line at a funeral, for example.)

But even when good sense prevails, their authenticity remains.

“The reason the show works is we get to be ourselves,” says Joe Gatto .

Popular on Variety

Fans and colleagues agree.

The premise is deceptively simple: Four guys — Sal Vulcano , Brian “Q” Quinn, James Murray and Gatto — pull hidden-camera pranks. The joke, however, is always on them. The unwitting public interacts with one prankster, while the others whisper increasingly nuttier instructions into an earpiece. Fail a challenge, and he must take the punishment doled out by the others at the episode’s end.

“We punch sideways,” Quinn says. “We are our own marks.”

The group has thrived for two simple reasons: They make people feel good, and they’re funny. In an increasingly nasty world, their humor is silly, not dirty or mean. Murray recalls receiving letters from fans who said three generations watch “Impractical Jokers” as a family. “That changed the show fundamentally,” he says.

It’s a raw day just before Christmas when the four gather in a Chelsea studio to shoot publicity photos for “Impractical Jokers: The Movie.” Their banter isn’t one of those rehearsed, “oh-we-all-became-a-family-on-set” gush-fests. No, this is the genuine deal, friendships forged over three decades.

“It was an all-boys school, and we had nothing to do but focus on each other and making each other laugh,” Quinn says of the early days.

No one was crazy enough to think this could turn into a career. Before the Tenderloins took off, Vulcano worked on Wall Street, then bought a bar; Murray was in television development; Quinn was a New York City firefighter for eight years — a job he kept through the show’s first two seasons — and Gatto worked in an upscale children’s furniture store, where he once assembled cribs for Elvis Costello’s babies.

“We punch sideways. We are our own marks.” Brian “Q” Quinn

For 11 years, they played tiny clubs. “We would sell 200 tickets,” Vulcano recalls.

“And 198 of them were to family members,” Gatto says.

During the first season of “Impractical Jokers,” they quickly learned what worked and adjusted. “We let the show breathe more,” Vulcano says. “We focused on the comedy from a broadcast point. It became more stylized and interactive. We got more people on board.”

Among them is Casey Jost. Another Monsignor Farrell alum, although nine years younger than the gang, Jost was taking classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade when he met Vulcano. “We would watch each other do standup and hang out,” Jost says. “I had known about the Tenderloins. Before they were famous, they were Staten Island famous.”

Jost began as a PA on “Impractical Jokers,” became a writer and is now a supervising comedy producer. Though the Tenderloins remain the core four, most people who work with them stay.

“Impractical Jokers” sold to truTV “even though it didn’t feel like a fit, it wound up guiding truTV toward comedy,” says Simmy Kustanowitz, vice president development and original programming at TBS, TNT and truTV. “It was our comedic pioneer.”

The series consistently delivers ratings. In the second half of Season 8, now airing, it reaches 731,000 viewers over a week. While much of the show appears improvised, the challenges are mapped out. “It is very similar to a live sporting event or a live taped show where there is an idea of what is going to happen, but there are lots of people who need to be told what to do while it is happening,” says Andrew Hood, director of most episodes.

Insurance is secured based on individual challenges, and anyone participating signs a release.

Every so often, though, someone does refuse. Gatto recalls a challenge at Ikea, where a man climbed into an armoire with him. The guy was furniture-shopping with a woman, except she was not his wife. That scenario happened again — at Ikea.

Gatto grasped the lesson: “All cheaters shop for Swedish discount furniture.”

Also unseen? Security. There was a huge, furious man on whom Murray attempted to try a bra in Season 7. He was not amused. “Within seconds, our security and producers were there to intervene,” says Marina Catala, an executive producer on the show for seven years. “He was such a big guy, and clearly, violence was there behind his eyes. That was the only time that ever happened.”

The rest of the time, especially in New York, where most scenes are shot, people take the Tenderloins in stride. Luckily, there are plenty of folks who still don’t recognize them. “While we love our fans, it is not beneficial to have fans watch because that blows our cover,” says showrunner Pete McPartland.

“The reason the show works is we get to be ourselves.” Joe Gatto

That fandom reaches beyond New York. The show has traveled a handful of times, and in the U.K., some 2,500 fans showed up at a soccer stadium just a couple of days after their appearance was announced. The guys are genuinely surprised by their popularity. Jeff Daniels, Steve Carell, Chrissy Teigen and Paul McCartney count themselves fans. Paul Rudd emailed Quinn to ask his opinion on the “Ghostbusters” trailer. It still all seems a bit surreal to guys who practiced in Gatto’s mom’s basement.

As successful as “Impractical Jokers” is as a cottage industry, each has outside interests. Gatto is producing, Quinn bought a brewery, Murray writes books, Vulcano does standup. As for personal lives, Gatto is the only one who’s married, with kids. Murray is engaged, Vulcano is in a relationship and Quinn says, “I live alone with three cats.”

But even juggling all this, they’re looking to expand. “We have had a number of spinoffs, and an afterparty hosted by beloved Joey Fatone,” says Charlie DeBevoise, CEO and founder NorthSouth Prods., the group’s production company from the start. “We are looking to work on that format a bit more, bring in a little more firepower on the creative side to build that out. We have had a skit show that was not as well received.” “Impractical Jokers,” however, could go on indefinitely, all say. The Feb. 13 two-hour 200th episode special features clips from their greatest hits during the first hour and in the second, they head to Los Angeles for new challenges and surprise guests.

Their Caribbean cruise — with 3,000 fans — is also a unique venture. Rather than just standing on a stage and delivering a comedy show, their fans become a part of the action and experience. While they show videos aboard the ship, for example, the audience “is chanting the lines from the show and dressed like us,” Vulcano says.

“It’s like we are throwing a party,” Gatto adds.

One that started back when they wore school uniforms and couldn’t drink legally.

“I didn’t think we would make it past the first season,” Murray admits.

So, after eight seasons and more than 1,500 ideas, what’s next?

“People’s Sexiest Men Alive,” Gatto deadpans.

Bridget Smith | Storyteller, Memory Maker

Writer, memory maker, storyteller, impractical jokers’ cranjis mcbasketball world comedy tour: a review.

tenderloins on tour

Comedian troupe The Tenderloins , who famously star in the popular hidden camera series  Impractical Jokers , brought their Cranjis McBasketball World Comedy Tour to Webster Bank Arena in Connecticut on January 18. My friend Julia and I had the pleasure of attending (…I say as if we happened upon it and hadn’t purchased tickets months in advance…); I now relish in the opportunity to tell you about my time spent laughing.

The audience was welcomed into the evening by way of the comedic stylings of   Chris Johnston , whose tales of using the family’s Elf of the Shelf to teach his children that “snitches get stitches” and managing his road rage with the help of a raunchy talisman delighted the crowd.  His anecdotes were relatable and targeted to different age groups; Johnston was able to strike a chord with everyone in the audience, leaving no person without laughter.

Following, he introduces to the stage his friends Joe Gatto, James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn and Sal Vulcano. With energy that matches the crowds’ enthusiasm, the improvisational quartet saunters on stage and welcomes us to their world comedy tour.  The 90-minute show is an expanded take on the  Jokers format that fans have come to know and love.  Sure, there is no impending punishment at the end of the set, but the group tells stories that are peppered with well-timed jabs plus never-before-seen clips in the same jovial fashion.  On stage, bits are not spliced to fit a 23-minute television slot, and as a result the audience is able to see a more fully fleshed out presentation of the group.  That is, their personalities, which are reflected in diluted archetypes on the TV show, are more authentically presented.

Though dubbed a suggested 16+ event, the content of the evening was particularly raunchy, save for some language that usually is present but bleeped out during TruTV airings.  The show was weaved together with a repeated punchline: “You’re the bad person in this story.” And the mantra is cast upon each of the Jokers throughout the night as they tell a tale indignantly, initially believing they are innocent in the matter, only to have their school of thought “reconstructed” when another on stage offers a fresh perspective: Joe, when he thrusts his celebrity status on some unwitting teens galavanting in the mall; Murr, when he arranges his family a stay in a home that could have resulted in their demise; Q, when he sends a brutally honest email to his family (and accountant) regarding his true feelings about them, and Sal, when he gets high in Amsterdam and throws a condom at a fellow opera-goer. The last of which was particularly enjoyable as this extended anecdote highlighted in broader strokes the comedic timing and physical humor of Sal , who was recently on a solo tour performing his stand-up routine.

The live show is successful because like the television program, it is rooted in authenticity.  The audience can identify themselves and their friends in the Jokers’ actions, not only in the way the group is quick to chastise one another for mispronouncing celebrity names and telling stories poorly, but through the usage of footage shot on their personal cell phones displayed on screen.  People are responsive to their work because The Tenderloins are first and foremost a group of friends who want to make one another laugh.

0-1

As playful and quick as the content is, the performers swiftly (and often) change the tone of the show to earnestly thank the audience for their unwavering support, that of which is represented not only by attendance, but by the presence of  Jokers’ extraneous endeavors, be it guests doting shirts for Q’s podcast or clutching bags with copies of Murr’s book inside.

The evening’s conversations culminate in a confetti-falling sing-along, at which time those sitting in the “pit” area are able to have a chance at exchanging pleasantries and snapping photos with the comedians on stage.

The Tenderloins are on tour through the summer and it is something I earnestly recommend fans of the show (or fans of laughter in general) attend.

Did you take them? I’m considering bringing my 15 yo

The live performances are unbearable! The ‘off the cuff’ humor preceded by silly setups is like attending a jr high talent show! I can’t believe that these guys make a living with such garbage!

' src=

It’s raunchy. Lots of F bombs and sexual innuendos. Very funny but not particularly appropriate for a younger audience.

' src=

In the fourth paragraph you say “the content of the evening was particularly raunchy”. Is that a typo? I’m hoping you meant to say wasn’t as I really want to bro g my kids and I’m trying to figure out if I should. They are super fans and I wouldn’t mind if there were a few swear words but if the actual content is raunchy then I wouldn’t!

Currently in its 4th season, Impractical Jokers follows the guys as they coerce one another into doing public pranks while being filmed by hidden cameras. The 4th season premiere drew more than two million viewers and the program consistently earns Top Five rankings in its timeslot for key demos. This season continues to take dares to outrageous levels with a whole new arsenal of over-the-top hijinks, bringing the show and the guys to new locations and setting each other up for some of the most uncomfortable antics yet.   Their highly successful tour, “The truTV Impractical Jokers ‘Where’s Larry?’ Tour Starring The Tenderloins,” is a mix of stand-up, never-before-seen hidden camera videos, stories and insight. The tour has crisscrossed the country playing to 2000-8000 people per market.   The Tenderloins official site The Tenderloins on facebook

Cutting Ball Theater

2019 \ Jan 9-26

The Tenderloin Tour

Prime Cuts from the 2012 Hit

Cutting Ball Theater - Tenderloin Tour

By Annie Elias

with Tristan Cunningham , Siobhan Doherty , Rebecca Frank , Michael Kelly , Leigh Shaw , David Sinaiko , and David Westley Skillman

Directed By Annie Elias

The Tenderloin Tour  revives the “prime cuts” of  Tenderloin , Cutting Ball’s original documentary-style play from 2012 about its neighborhood, in a one-hour touring production.  The Tenderloin Tour  will run for a limited engagement at the theater and tour to community sites throughout the Tenderloin for free performances.

About the play:

Join the community. Get to know the neighborhood that Cutting Ball calls home.  Tenderloin , Cutting Ball’s original documentary-style play from 2012, was a collage of interviews with its denizens, a vibrant homage to the unheard voices of a complex and spirited neighborhood. In 2019, Cutting Ball is thinking locally:  The Tenderloin   Tour  brings the "prime cuts" of that original production back to the theater and out into the community that inspired the play.

Run time: 1 hour 5 minutes followed by a 30-minute discussion

"Everything’s fine. Really. It’s fine. Right? Please come see me and tell me it’s fine. Or I’ll tell you? We’ll figure it out," he ended.

'WHY DO YOU HATE US?'

Although Sal announced nearly 30 dates, fans in the comments asked why he hated them because he wasn't coming to their city.

Some states were left out completely.

"No California?" one fan asked.

"Not sure why you hate VA, but ok!" said another.

"Why are you barred form the state of California, Sal," a third wondered.

Sal Vulcano's Everything's Fine Tour Dates

The Impractical Jokers star has announced the dates for the first leg of his brand new tour. Tickets can be purchased through his website of through Ticketmaster.

"Bro, why do you hate Philly so much?" an Instagram user asked.

"No love for the Boston Babes," a fan commented with a sad face emoji.

Other fans put their dismay in the comments that he wasn't coming to their city.

'MULTIPLE LEGS'

However, Sal put a lot of fans' tension at ease as he added to his caption.

"PAY ATTENSH: If you don’t see your city you don’t need to ask why I’m not coming there. I am. Many, if not every single city on Earth, will be added as we go," he wrote.

In the comments, Sal even told fans that he would be adding more dates as this was just the first leg.

"Will be added. Multiple legs, babe!" he told a fan who asked about the Bay Area.

'PURE JOY'

However, Sal might not have as much time as he used to.

In May 28, he let it slip on a podcast that he secretly got married and had a baby .

Sal appeared on  Theo Von 's podcast,  This Past Weekend to discuss his upcoming comedy special, Terrified.

Theo brought up the topic of building a family, which led Sal to drop some unexpected news.

"I've never really said it," Sal stuttered.

Theo then said that he didn't need to discuss his personal life if he didn't want to.

However, the podcast host asked him if being a dad was scary.

"In my regular life, no," Sal responded.

"You know I have my wife, my kid, that's real life. But why do people who see me for 22 minutes on TV every week need to know that?"

Sal sighed before tears welled up in his eyes.

"It's the best thing that ever happened to me. If I start talking about her, I'll get tears in my eyes," he said.

Jennifer Lopez cancels summer tour, including Little Caesars Arena date

Singer-actress is "heartsick" over the decision, she said in a statement..

tenderloins on tour

Jennifer Lopez has canceled her summer tour, including a July 31 concert at Little Caesars Arena, promoter Live Nation announced Friday.

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down," Lopez said in a message posted to her website .

"Please know that I wouldn't do this if I didn't feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…"

Ticketholders will be refunded within 14-21 days, according to a message on the event's Ticketmaster page .

The tour cancelation follows reports of disappointing ticket sales in the wake of the underperformance of Lopez' latest album, "This Is Me... Now." The album debuted at No. 38 on Billboard's Top 200 tally and quickly dropped off the chart.

The tour was announced in February and was rebranded as a greatest hits tour in early April in the wake of the album's commercial failure.

The cancellation also comes amid reports of Lopez' martial woes with husband Ben Affleck.

In its announcement of the tour cancellation, Live Nation said Lopez is "taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends."

Recent weeks have also seen the cancelations of upcoming outings by the Black Keys and the "Barbie The Movie: In Concert" tour.

J. Lo's last Detroit performance was at Little Caesars Arena in July 2019 .
